Canada Invests in fishing and recreational harbours ERIEAU, WHEATLEY, LAKESHORE – Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, announced last week that the Government of Canada is investing over $2.76 million for infrastructure improvements at three Ontario small craft harbours in the communities of Rondeau (Erieau), Wheatley, and the Town of Lakeshore.

Communities across Canada are supported by small craft harbours that provide the commercial fishing industry with safe and accessible facilities. With approximately 44,000 Canadians employed in this sector, the Government of Canada is making investments to renew its network of small craft harbours and work with municipalities and other stakeholders to enhance local communities.

$1.6 million to Erieau The federal government is investing $1.66 million in the Rondeau (Erieau) Harbour, a large commercial fishing harbour on Lake Erie that is the homeport to dozens of local and transient commercial fishing vessels. The project will replace the existing timber piles with steel pipe piles of four jetties and replace the concrete decking on six jetties.

The project was awarded to East Elgin Concrete Forming. Work started in the fall of 2018 and will be completed

by March 2019.

Wheatley Harbour, the largest freshwater fishing harbour in the world and largest commercial fishing harbour in the Central and Arctic Region, will receive $244,000 in funding. This investment will rehabilitate a timber pile wall and a new asphalt deck, further preventing erosion damage to the newly rehabilitated east wall. The project was awarded to Goodreau Excavating and construction is expected to start in February 2019.

Another significant investment under Budget 2018 valued at $860,000 is directed towards the reconstruction project at the Small Craft Harbour Thames River facility. East Elgin Concrete Forming Limited will use the funding to rehabilitate sections of timber crib wall structures with new steel sheet piles walls, concrete capping, boat launch ramp repairs and a new asphalt parking lot. Construction is underway and will be completed by the end of May 2019. Once the repair work has been completed Small Craft Harbours will transfer ownership of the Thames River facility to the Town of Lakeshore.

Icy beauty Eleanor Armstrong Eleanor Armstrong, 82 years, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2019 at Royal Oak Long Term Care, Kingsville, ON. Dear daughter of the late Harold and Eva Armstrong.

Loving sister of late Jack Armstrong (Eileen) and late Muriel Trefry (late Harold). Much loved aunt of Judy Demers (Gerald), Terry Trefry (Ecaterina), Jack Trefry (Sherry), Erin Bruneau (late Paul), Mary Doherty (Mike), Larry Armstrong (Maureen) and Les Armstrong (Elaine).

Eleanor will be missed by many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Eleanor spent most of her adult life in Orlando until returning to Canada in 2009. Thank you to the staff at Royal Oak for the care and compassion given to Eleanor.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Eleanor’s life will be held at a later date.

If desired, memorial donations made to the Windsor, Essex Humane Society would be appreciated.

Council backs Bank Theatre on line of credit for reno

LEAMINGTON – The Municipality of Leamington has expressed the utmost confidence in a local group’s efforts to fund the final phase of a major entertainment hub’s revitalization.

Leamington chief administrative officer Peter Neufeld presented a report to council requesting that the municipality act as a sort of safety net for a $600,000 line of credit Sun Parlour Community Theatre is utilizing to put the finishing touches on The Bank Theatre and Meeting Place project. The funds are expected to finance the last stage of renovations for the former Bank of Montreal location at 10 Erie St. South, which has been temporarily closed from further performances to make way for construction and installation of final amenities.

Members of council voted unanimously in support of the motion to act as a security on the line of credit.

In 2006, the Municipality of Leamington took ownership of the building that once served as a Bank of Montreal branch at 10 Erie St. South at a purchase price of $2. After the building sat vacant for four years, negotiations led to the transfer of the property to Sun Sarlour Players Community Theatre, which launched the multi-year Bank Theatre and Meeting Place renovation project.

“A lot of work has been done and there has been a lot of fundraising by this group,” Neufeld explained. “Given that this is a pillar of our uptown reinvention and part of our tourism strategy, this is a great time to show that we support this program.”

Neufeld went on to note that if Sun Parlour Players were to set out on their own to acquire the line of credit, it would cost them an additional $15,000 for a required appraisal, assessment report, collateral to secure the credit and other charges. The report to council also explained that in the event of discontinued use for in excess of six months, ownership of the premises would return to the municipality. All money generated through the Sun Player group’s future fundraising efforts will be used to pay off the line of credit.

“We’re really in no worse a position by providing this security,” Neufeld said while assuring council that doing so will come at no cost to the municipality.

Based on the Sun Parlour organization’s history of fundraising for Bank Theatre renovations — a combined sum of about $2.1 million — members of council expressed unwavering faith in its ability to pay off the line of credit.

“They’ve got a great committee there,” said councilor John Hammond. “It’s important for them to move forward and get this project done.”

“This is a great asset for Leamington and they’ve got a great board handling it,” added councilor Paul Thiessen.

Neufeld went on to explain that the interest rate on the line of credit would be “quite manageable” for the Sun Parlour committee handling fundraising efforts and that a group of potential donors are already in place waiting to see the final phase completed.

OPP warn of counterfeit money in circulation LEAMINGTON – Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued a warning to the public of the presence of counterfeit currency being passed in the Leamington area.

Several counterfeit Canadian $20 bills surfaced last week creating the need for public awareness and education of this crime.

These particular bank notes are more noticeably counterfeit, having additional written language predominantly displayed on either side of the bills.

His first car was a 1933 Ford coupe Don Clarke of London, Ontario, grew up in Leamington with his first job at Ray Young’s Pontiac-Buick dealership on Mill Street East in 1951 for 28 cents an hour.

He washed cars, did lube and oil changes, fixed flats, and other odd jobs that needed doing. By 1953, he was earning 33 cents an hour, then left for higher pay elsewhere.

Revitalizing that new team smell While I seriously doubt that I’ve come across a do-ityourself breakthrough (apparently, they’re called “hacks” now), I recently made a rather pleasant discovery of sorts.

Since I probably won’t be in the market for a new (or even newer) daily commuter any time soon, I’ve been fairly committed to dusting the dash, steering wheel/column, front door panels and centre console of the ol’ crimson warhorse — my ’07 Chevy Impala — over the past few months. In fact, I’ve kept those surfaces virtually dust free for more than the past year. I might be my imagination, but since getting into that routine, it seems that the beloved new car smell has been reinvigorated.

Well, at least to a certain extent. The car’s 12 years old now, so there’ll likely never be anything ‘new’ about it aside from worn out parts that get replaced. Still, it’s nice to sit behind the wheel and see some part of the aging family sedan maintain a certain degree of lustre — I just have to remind myself not to look at the floor below the back passenger side seat where my seven-year-old son sits. Keeping THAT surface clean would be a lost cause.

Making something new (or new-ish) out of something old isn’t exactly out of the ordinary. In organized sports, it often happens with a team branding, personnel reshuffling or a host community relocation (yeah, that’s right, I’m

writing about sports again — old habits die hard). Close to home, plans are in the works to pick up some change of address forms for the Stobbs Division (formerly the Great Lakes Junior C loop) Wallaceburg Lakers. With league and OHA approval, the team could end up in Tilbury as soon as 2019-’20.

If the plan comes to fruition, the ‘good news or bad news?’ factor will depend on who — or rather WHERE — you are. Personally, I’d have mixed feelings about the move. I’d feel bad for the diehard fans in Wallaceburg, the town I called home for a little over eight years. The Lakers have been in Chatham-Kent’s upper left corner since it was formed in 1972 — two years before I was born.

The situation in Wallaceburg is a case of nobody (that I’m aware of) being at fault. Junior hockey teams live and die by sponsorship and with the steady stream of factories and businesses closing in Wallyworld since the late ‘90s, that sponsorship isn’t easy to find. The same problem impacts the spectator situation. While the 2018’19 home crowd average of 159 fans is better than a number of PJHL franchises that were far more successful on the ice, it doesn’t help the stability of a team that’s already dealing with the aforementioned sponsorship/advertising challenges.

once again have a team to call their own. Like many other small Southwestern Ontario towns, its minor hockey system had to amalgamate with another centre (Chatham) a few years ago to stay afloat. Thusly, the Tilbury Thunder became part of the Kent Cobras.

My only hope is that if the whole plan transpires as intendBryan Jessop ed, the Lakers (the team would probably be rebranded, as “Lakers” isn’t a great name for a team based in a landlocked town) don’t tread too heavily on the Sharks’ recruitment territory. I’d love nothing more than seeing the teams on and east of the Wheatley Townline give the likes of Essex and Lakeshore a very serious run for their money from season to season. I’d also love to see the barns in Tilbury and Wheatley packed to the rafters when their teams go head to head. It has the makings of the league’s best rivalry, bar none.

We need to strengthen the Endangered Species Act

Dear Editor, Doug Ford’s government is reviewing the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This is alarming news, based on his government’s past record.

This is a critical moment for endangered species. Some of Ontario’s most beloved animals are at risk of disappearing forever. Caribou, polar bears, songbird and turtle species are in decline in this province. The list of endangered species is growing.

The biggest problem with the Endangered Species Act is that it has never been properly enforced. Successive governments ignored deadlines, made minimal efforts, and watered down the rules.

Industry enjoys massive exemptions from the ESA’s strict measures. This has to stop. The government must get rid of the sweeping exemptions to the ESA, then enforce the rules.

Based on the content of the review, the Ford government seems focused on making it even easier for logging, mining and other industry to destroy the ecosystems that endangered species — and we — need for survival.

It is urgent that we take action. Ontarians must push Ford to address the real problem — the decline in our endangered plants and animals.

Instead, Tony and Mary Taylor have been forced to close their windows in an attempt to shut out the noise from the car wash that opened across the street from them.

wash owners, council said they took action immediately once a complaint was voiced, installing different blowers.

“Ten months of abusive noise should be enough,” said Mr. Taylor. “Maybe an incentive would be to close the car wash until they comply,” he added.

Councillors agreed the area is a high traffic area with the traffic noise alone often exceeding the 60-decibel level.

But some also agreed that 10 months is long enough and that residents shouldn’t have to wait so long to have such problems rectified.

“Does it typically take nine months?” asked Councillor Thomas Neufeld.

CAO Peggy Van MierloWest said the town, as well as the owners, have been working on a solution.

“It does take time,” she added.

Deputy Mayor Gord Queen requested a report from administration within 30 days to show the action that is being taken to help silence the noise.

Golden Years golf report Fifty-one Golden Years golfers delivered a strong 93 aces on February 14 at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens. The day was highlighted by Laurie Hylton shooting a record 32 over 18 holes.

She also led the ace parade with six.

Low score over nine holes with 16 went to Mavis Rutter, John Murphy and Laurie Hylton with two. Steve Vigh has low score over 18 holes with 34. Laurie Hylton had a low score of 67 over 36 holes.

First place bragging rights with 230 went to Team 10 (Al Rutter, Bill Ward, Pete Daudlin).

Second place was captured by Team 4 (Laurie Hylton, Rose Taylor, Dorothy Cascadden) with 235. Third and final spot went to Team 8 with 237 (Walter Balsam, John Murphy, Barb Murphy).

Soup Cook-Off a hit at Wheatley Legion Canada investing in harbours A full house was on hand at Wheatley Legion last Saturday afternoon for the Meat Draws

amid the aroma of 15 pots of soup simmering on the counter. The judges – Jane Pursel, Wayne Derksen, Steve Tofflemire and Sheri Godfrey – had their work cut out for them. After lots of deliberation, they decided that Mary Jo Wright’s cheeseburger soup earned first place. Sue Watson’s shrimp and bacon soup took second place and Jan Miller’s beef noodle soup took third place. In my book, all the entrants were winners and all received free fish fry tickets for any fish fry we hold this year. News of the Pews February 14 was St. Valentine’s Day and in leading up to that day, on February 10 Pastor John’s message addressed the scripture reading of The Song of Solomon, often referred to as a collection of love songs written by Solomon.

This celebration of love is sometimes seen as an allegory of the love of Christ for his church; Christ, the groom, and the church, his bride. John’s message gave thought to how loved and precious in His sight we are.

Symbols of love can be found all throughout the church building this month as our decorating team have sprinkled red hearts and ribbons throughout the church building, and on Thursday several came together to enjoy our Valentine’s Suppertime community meal.

All who love to sing are welcome to be part of the music ministry. Choir practice is held Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Please join us in the choir loft! The Wheatley United Church choir is a small group, but a very dedicated group who love to sing. The music ministry is led by sisters, Sarri McMahon-Stonefish and Sonia McMahon-Comartin. The sisters are in high demand, as they split their time between Wheatley United and St. Andrews United in Comber. On Sundays and other occasions when neither is available, we are blessed to have Eileen Hooker or Karen Renwick fill in.

High school curling arrives at Sun Parlour club

Rough weather has wreaked havoc on high school sports lately, but a new curling venue for the 2019 season has made travel a little easier on teams in the southeast corner of the county.

The Sun Parlour Curling Club in Leamington opened its doors to WECSSAA curling this season, much to the convenience of teams representing Leamington District Secondary School and Kingsville District High School. Although icy roads kept city teams at bay, the KDHS and LDSS boys teams met at the Leamington facility to carry on with the current season for a Wednesday, Feb. 13 draw.

The Cavaliers improved their record with a 7-4 win against the Lions, delivering Leamington its second loss of the season. Kingsville improved to a record of two wins, four losses and two ties for six points with the Wednesday victory while the Lions fell to 4-2-1.

One day later, LDSS suffered its third loss in a 5-4 loss to second-place Massey.

The Cavaliers have iced a three-player team with Jocelyn Wright as lead and ‘half second’, Jake Tessier as ‘half second’ and vice and Matthew Pouget as skip. The team is being led by coach Tony Braithwaite. The Cavaliers have also formed one of one three WECSSAA girls teams this season, along with the Belle River Nobles and Holy Names Knights.

Kingsville started with 7-3 and 11-7 losses to Holy Names and Belle River respectively, but then bounced back with a 7-6 win against the Knights. The KDHS group was to face Holy Names at the Sun Parlour Club February 13, but the city opponents declined because of inclement weather conditions.

The LDSS boys team features both new and familiar faces in comparison to previous seasons. The group is made up of nine players, which would have been enough for two ‘B’ division teams that start the season prior to Christmas. With ‘A’ division competition permitting only one boys and one girls team per school, the Leamington group rotates its players from one draw to the next.

Connor Smith, who served as vice last year, is skip for the 2019 LDSS squad. Ethan Pearce, Stephen Hotz, Colby Clark, Eric Wright and Luke Rahn are also back from the 2018 campaign. New players include Aden Letkeman, Dylan Paine and Emma Hamilton. The team is again CASH ROOGER led by coach Matt Dick.

KDHS Jr. Girls win WECSSAA The Kingsville Cavaliers Junior Girls’ Volleyball team refused to let a depleted bench stand in its way of a WECSSAA championship. With four starters enjoying their Grade 10 Quebec trip, the girls stepped up and didn’t miss a beat. On Wednesday, Feb. 13 they swept their Riverside opponents 3-0 on some fine serving by Charlene Smith and Sascha Batke. The following day, they took on Brennan and managed to squeak by them 3-2 to earn the title. Members of the Junior Girls Tier 2 WECSSAA volleyball championship team are, back row, coach Darren O’Neil, Jordyn Beneteau, Charlene Smith, Annika Mastronardi, Savannah Cipkar, Sascha Batke and assistant coach Michael Majcen.

Southpoint Red and Kingsville Green skate to a draw The Kingsville Novice Green and Southpoint Red squads met in their second round robin playoff game Saturday, Feb. 16 in front of a capacity crowd. Red was looking to make amends for its first round loss, while Kingsville looked to keep their playoff win streak alive.

The Green Machine came out quick but channeled Quasimodo as they listened to the ringing of posts having hit iron seven times during the game. The Southpoint goaltender stood tall, stopping pretty well everything else in between.

Kingsville managed to get on the board first as Keaton Morphet lit the lamp, finishing a feed by Jasper Dunford.

A chess match ensued until Southpoint tied and then pulled ahead by one in the third as the visiting squad poured on the pressure.

With the final seconds of the game ticking down, Sam Ward made his way to the bench in favour of an extra attacker. An undefeated season held in the balance as the Machine saw a Red shot graze the gaping net. Quinn Monminie picked up the lose puck and the race to beat the buzzer was on as he dashed down the boards and ultimately bulged the twine and the final horn sounded in a 2-2 tie.

Novice Reds kept busy Community Trophies Novice Red had a busy weekend and played some of their best hockey all season.

The first game was against a strong Kingsville Green team. Kingsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the first minute had been played. The score remained 1-0 until early in the third when Sean Amaral from Southpoint scored to tie things up. Red’s Connor Rumble/Anastacio scored a second goal at the 10 minute mark. In the closing minutes of the game, Kingsville pulled the goalie and with 10 seconds left in the game they scored off a Quinn Monminie shot. Southpoint’s goalie Ty Gould was outstanding in net.

The Community Trophy team then played four games at the Dodge Caravan Family Day Tournament. To begin with, they played a great game against Windsor Black, but still lost 2-1. Sean scored their lone goal. In the second game Southpoint met up with Kingsville Green, who definitely had the advantage in odd man rushes. The end result was a 3-0 game for Green.

The third game pitted Southpoint against Harrow.

In the first period, Connor, from Community Trophy, skated the length of the ice and back handed the puck over the Harrow goalie. The second goal for Community Trophy came when Darius Quiring took the puck behind the Harrow net, passed it out in front to Gavin Butineillo who put it away. The game ended at 2-0 and Ty Gould earned then shutout.

The final game had Southpoint playing South-Kent.

From a scoring standpoint it was all Sean Amaral with three goals. In the first, he came in from centre to score.

The second was off a face-off in the South Kent end.

The third was on an end-to-end rush. Reid Charles assisted on the second goal. In general, the Southpoint team has become more aggressive in going after the puck. They still need to incorporate teamwork into the offense. Next week, they will be in the Norwich Tournament.

Sun Parlour youths curling in Detroit Over the Saturday, Feb. 9, Sunday, Feb. 10 weekend, a group of Leamington-area youths — most of them members of the Sun Parlour Curling Club, ventured across the border to take part in a bonspiel hosted by the Detroit Curling Club. Divided into four teams, the up and coming curlers all experienced a successful weekend. One of the local groups captured the A Flight championship, another lost in the B Flight final and the other two won the C Flight and D Flight finals. The participating youths range from Grades 7 to 11 at local schools.

It may have been Valentine’s Day, but the Leamington Flyers showed no love for their Strathroy guests.

The Flyers won a tough, physical game 5-0 Thursday, Feb. 14 for goalie Ryan Polidori’s third shutout win at Highbury Canco Arena. The victory also put three points between Leamington and London in the conference’s sprint for first place.

Despite their steady parade of players into the penalty box, the Flyers did all the damage in the first period. Ninety-three seconds after the opening faceoff, Dylan Weston one-timed a Brett Postula pass high into the mesh from the slot for an early 1-0 Leamington lead.

Thomas Michaud earned the other assist. Just over 10 minutes later, Adam Jeffery beat Vince Michelizzi with a quick wrist shot just after the goaltender fell to his knees.

Ryan Gagnier and Michael Andrews set up the goal.

The Rockets kept it close on the shot clock — on which they trailed 9-8 after the first buzzer — thanks largely to three power play opportunities. Leamington’s penalty killing unit however was effective through the first period.

Over two dozen chilies at annual chilifest Community is invited to come together to support SECC services LEAMINGTON: South Essex Community Council (SECC) is inviting the community to attend Chilifest 2019 on February 27 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Leamington Portuguese Club.

“The community support for this event every year is amazing and is a critical piece in our efforts to provide valuable transportation services in South Essex,” said Carolyn Warkentin, Executive Director.

This year’s event will feature over two dozen chilis, baked potatoes, nachos, vegetables, cake, raffles and will be hosted by Kendal from Mix 96.7. All of the food and raffle prizes are donated by local businesses and community groups. The event raises money for SECC’s transit service, which provides accessible and affordable transportation for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Tickets for the event are available at SECC’s office at 215 Talbot St. E in Leamington for $8. Tickets are also available at the door the day of the event or online at www.secc. on.ca/chilifest for $10. For those who can’t stay for lunch, take out is also available.
