As part of our bold vision for care close to home, we are in the process of fundraising for vital room refurbishments throughout the hospital this year and we hope to launch another life-changing expansion in the near future.

Sun protection is a must. My favourite SPF for the face (that also doubles as a makeup primer) is the Lancôme UV Expert. I have restocked this so many times and will continue to do so. It is the perfect balance of a lightweight moisturizer, makeup prep, and sun protection. For my body, I always pack the Vichy Capital Soleil UV Sport SPF 60. I love this option for the body as this formula can be applied on wet or dry skin.
Multi-use sticks are great for travelling or downsizing your makeup bag. PÜR cosmetics has a great selection of easy-to-blend cream sticks that are infused with peptides. The shade “Bronze Babe” is perfect to add dimension to your cheeks and eyes. I always make sure to bring eye patches with me on any trip. Sometimes you just need a refresh in the morning or mid-day before going out again. One of my greatest joys as a designer is hearing directly from you — whether it’s a quick question about layout, a dilemma over paint swatches, or how to make your space feel more like you. Lately, my inbox has been brimming with thoughtful design inquiries that reflect what so many of us are craving right now: comfort, clarity, and a deeper sense of home.
In this edition, I’m sharing the top three questions I’ve received recently — each one representing a common thread I see among homeowners and design lovers alike. Whether you’re navigating an open-concept living space, wondering how to layer texture without chaos, or finally tackling that awkward corner you’ve been ignoring, chances are, these answers will spark a fresh perspective in your own space.

How do I make my open-concept living and dining area feel cozy without breaking it up too much?
What a beautiful challenge! Open-concept layouts offer wonderful flow and spaciousness, but they can sometimes lack the intimacy of defined rooms. To strike that perfect balance, start by layering warmth through texture and visual rhythm. Use rugs to anchor each space — think of them as gentle boundaries that cue the purpose of a zone without blocking sight lines. Then introduce soft lighting at varied heights: a floor lamp near the sofa, pendants over the dining table, and maybe even a dimmable sconce or two to add ambiance. Lastly, incorporate tactile materials — linen, leather, woven wood, maybe a touch of velvet — to invite the senses into each area. Remember, cozy is not about clutter; it’s about creating spaces that whisper, “You belong here.”
We’re renovating our bathroom and I want it to feel spa-like but still functional for our busy family. What’s your secret?
You’re speaking my language — beauty and function in harmony. A spa-inspired bathroom starts with restraint: a limited palette (soft neutrals, nature-inspired hues), clean lines and calming details. But it also means creating rituals through design. Invest in good lighting, ideally layered lighting with a dimmable option for evening wind-downs. Use natural stone or wood tones for warmth, and add a small stool or shelf where you can place a candle, plant or your favourite bath salts. Storage is also essential: beautiful cabinetry, hidden compartments and inset niches can keep things looking serene while handling the bustle of daily life. Your bathroom should be both a sanctuary and a system, and yes, with the right layout and materials, it absolutely can be both.
How do I refresh my home without doing a major renovation? I want it to feel more ‘me’ again.
What a powerful question. Our homes are reflections of who we are and sometimes they evolve out of sync with us. The good news? You don’t need a sledgehammer to spark transformation. Start with intention: What do you want your space to feel like? Energized? Grounded? Romantic? Then build around that mood. Rearrange your layout to create better flow, swap out tired textiles (pillows, throws, drapes), and update art with pieces that reflect your current taste and values. Even changing a paint colour, perhaps something lighter and brighter, can reset the emotional tone of your space.
In a world consumed by the pursuit of perfection, there is a quiet movement that celebrates the beauty of imperfection. The Japanese aesthetic philosophy known as wabi-sabi encourages us to find joy and meaning in the imperfect, the weathered and the incomplete.
At its core, wabi-sabi is a mindset that recognizes the inherent beauty in the natural cycle of growth, decay, and renewal. It’s about embracing the flaws, the asymmetry, and the temporary nature of all things, and finding solace in the imperfect.
In an age where social media feeds often depict perfectly curated homes, wabi-sabi offers a refreshing antidote. It’s about letting go of the pursuit of perfection, and instead, cultivating a deep appreciation for the unique character that imperfections bring to our living spaces.
Incorporating the principles of wabi-sabi into your home can be a transformative experience. Here are some tips to help you get started:

• Prepare the soil: Clear the area of weeds and debris. Loosen the soil with a rake or tiller to promote good seed-to-soil contact.

As a photographer, Wheatley Harbour is my absolute favorite place to shoot. In the early years, fishermen had their own wharves, but as the industry grew, so did the need for better facilities. In 1912, the federal government built a new pier, allowing more and bigger vessels to use the harbour. Wheatley Harbour is located on the north shore of Lake Erie. The harbour is home to the largest freshwater commercial fishing fleets in the world, with approximately 45 fishing tugs. Wheatley offers a vibrant community and a relaxed lakeside lifestyle. Many people spend their summers vacationing here. Wheatley is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. If you ever get the chance to visit, Wheatley Harbour is worth the scenery. There’s so many different kinds of scenery to work with, between boats, wildlife, lighthouse and the dock. The sunrises are beautiful!
Being a wedding and lifestyle photographer in Essex County, I’m always looking to explore new places with clients and find inspiration within various locations; however, there are a few staple spots that never get old and Lakeside Park in Kingsville is one of them. With two beaches, lush gardens, the popular bridge over the creek and open grass areas, this public park provides a variety of photo opportunities for my clients all year round with a stunning sunset to boot! Whether it’s for a photoshoot or just a leisurely stroll, Lakeside never disappoints!
Living in Essex County has us truly blessed when it comes to beautiful backgrounds for photoshoots. With all the parks and waterfronts, it’s hard to pick just one location — what a great problem to have! I have found myself at the water’s edge more often than not. Seacliff Park and Beach, in particular, have served me and my clients well when in need of an aesthetic backdrop that is not only photogenic, but also sentimental for locals. There is something soothing and calming about the water that puts nervous models at ease, which makes the session more enjoyable for everyone.
Getting creative shots in a small town is usually a very hard task, but NOT in Kingsville. Downtown Kingsville gives such an inviting warm vibe and is incredibly fun to shoot in. Not only is the lighting always spectacular, but the colours and creativity on all the exterior finishes of the businesses are beyond beautiful. There’s literally a photo opportunity at every corner if you truly look at the beauty and local artwork that is painted throughout the downtown core area. From neon signs and murals to unique, artistic, colourful exteriors, downtown Kingsville truly is a photographer’s playground!

Travelling has always been one of my greatest loves, whether I’m going somewhere new or familiar. I love experiencing new places, learning about the history and culture within a community, appreciating the architecture, and exploring the local cafés, shops, and food scenes. My last trip was a special favourite for me its final two stops were Lisbon (my favourite city in the world!) to see Taylor Swift in concert and take a pasteis de nata baking course, before flying to São Miguel, Açores, to visit family I hadn’t seen in five years!
Living on the lake is such a gift, and we are so lucky to have so many beautiful spots close to home to get grounded in nature. I am so grateful to have Belamund located just up the street from Leamington’s waterfront and just a short drive from Point Pelee. For me, nothing beats a walk along the waterfront with my dogs or a friend.

There is no shortage of animals to love in our house! I have two dogs and one cat at home: Snoop is a 7-year-old Dalmatian/Border Collie, Augi is a 4-year-old Foxhound/ Border Collie/Lab/German Shepherd, and Calvin is our 1-year-old tabby cat. They remind me to stay playful, present, and always ready for snuggles.
I love a little arts and crafts. Creative outlets are where I do some of my best thinking. They give me space to be intentional and in the moment while creating something with my hands. My latest favourite ways to get creative have been painting, jewelry-making, and floral preservation (I even preserved my best friend’s wedding flowers!). And in my books, there are bonus points for creative projects that involve repurposed materials!
I loooove playing in the kitchen. Whether it’s experimenting with new methods or ingredients, learning my vavó’s (grandma) recipes with her, or just getting into the meditative zone that comes when I’m in my own groove, the kitchen is definitely where I feel connected to myself and my roots.
Whether it’s through my relationships with friends and family, my customers, or the broader circle around me, community is one of the most powerful forces in my life. I’m grateful to have so many friendships that fill me with joy and love — and one of my best friends I even met through my business! With a background in nonprofit work, I’ve always been passionate about community service. Having a café that doubles as a gathering space means I get to pour that same love into something tangible and be an active part of the fabric of our town. Community can look a lot of different ways, but it is always something special when we gather and support one another.
I’m one of those people who can drink coffee all hours of the day, and there are few things like that first sip of a quality coffee. A couple of local favourites are Chance Coffee and Red Lantern, and one of the best cups I’ve had while travelling was at The Folks in Lisbon, Portugal.

When did you start creating content on social media and what inspired you to start?
I started when my firstborn was six months old in the summer of 2022. I found myself needing a creative outlet – something just for me. It also helped me find community as a first-time mom feeling isolated and lonely most days.
What has been your biggest “moment” as an influencer? I’ve had many “pinch me” moments since growing an online platform (including being the cover feature of this magazine – so cool!). One of them was being asked to join an international Zoom call for a well-known beauty brand to be interviewed on my thoughts and opinions on unreleased products. How insane that a globally recognized brand wanted my opinion!
What advice would you give to someone just starting out creating content on social media?
Post like you’ve already “made it”. Small-minded people will judge you no matter what you do in life, so caring what they think is a waste of your time. The ones judging you at the start will likely be the ones asking you how you did it, so you might as well give them something to watch!

I recently discovered a free wellness app called Smiling Mind that uses the term “mental fitness”, a phrase I love. We often only associate fitness with physical health, but what about the strength and resilience of our minds? Like our bodies, our minds need care too. Thankfully, mental health is finally gaining the recognition it deserves in media, schools, workplaces, and everyday conversation.
Still, people often confuse mental health with mental illness. While illness is one aspect, mental health exists on a spectrum and affects everyone, not just those with a diagnosis. Just like you don’t need to be sick to benefit from exercise, you don’t need a diagnosis to work on your mental fitness. Mental health is just as essential as physical health!
Your mental health shapes your daily experience, such as through your mood. The National Library of Medicine describes mood as a “pervasive and sustained feeling tone that is endured internally.” Think back to the last time you were in a bad mood— maybe you were short with someone, struggled to focus, or lost motivation. If you live with a mental health challenge, you likely know how deeply it can impact your life. While a positive attitude can help, mental health issues are often more enduring—so a “just think positive” attitude doesn’t always work.
The truth is everyone will face a mental health challenge at some point. It’s a natural part of life and being human. So, what can you do when your mental health feels off or you simply want to work on your ‘mental fitness?’ As a Registered Social Worker in private practice, here are three evidence-based suggestions:
1. Be kind to your mind.
In other words, be compassionate towards yourself. Offer patience and understanding when met with frustration and self-criticism. Talk to yourself like you would a friend. Psychologist Kristin Neff, a leader in self-compassion research, has shown that we respond far better to kindness and warmth over self-judgment. Contrary to popular belief, criticism doesn’t motivate us. It activates our fight-or-flight stress response, making it harder to cope. Instead, our bodies thrive under the mammalian care-giving system—a biological response triggered by warmth, touch and soothing tones. This response releases oxytocin, a hormone
linked to calmness, connection and trust. A simple way to practice this is through Neff’s “common humanity” practice. When you’re struggling, pause and say to yourself “This is a hard moment” or “I’m feeling overwhelmed right now.” Then remind yourself “I’m not alone—everyone goes through tough times.” This helps break the isolation of pain and reconnects you with the broader human experience.
2. Move your body!

Physical movement is one of the most effective tools for improving mental health as exercise alters the chemistry in your brain! It boosts feel-good brain chemicals including dopamine, serotonin and endorphins while simultaneously reducing stress hormones like cortisol. It also sharpens cognitive function and supports emotional regulation.
The good news? Movement doesn’t need to mean hours at the gym. Start small and meet yourself where you’re at. A 20-minute yoga session (I love Yoga with Adriene on YouTube), a walk around your block, or even household chores all count! Bonus points if you get outdoors—especially in green spaces. Time in nature has the magical impact of reducing stress, anxiety and depression while boosting mood, focus and creativity. Even a short walk in the park can feel like a mental reset.
3. Seek support from a therapist.
I might be biased but talk therapy can make a big difference in your mental health. I’ve sat in both chairs, as client and therapist, and I know how healing it can be. Thankfully, therapy has become less stigmatized and is more common than ever before. Therapy offers a safe, confidential space for reflection, emotional support and growth. Every therapist brings a unique style and approach, so don’t hesitate to shop around. In my training, we were taught that the therapeutic relationship, the connection between client and therapist, is often the strongest predictor of success. I recommend browsing profiles on Psychology Today and booking a free consultation to see who a good fit might be. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a courageous step towards self-growth and healing.

It’s not surprising that, after having spent 25 years as a travel agent, one of my favourite topics of conversation is travel.
In this year of 2025, with talk specifically suggesting that we seek out travel adventures on our home soil, it seems that many travellers have taken that to heart — myself included. Friends and I have recently returned from a visit to Quebec City, a destination that has been on my travel bucket list for many years, and it was great!
Here are a few of my tips whether planning a road trip or a flight to a far-flung destination.
There are so many resources at your fingertips these days; guide books, tourism websites, travel agents, and friends and family. A trip with the kids will look much different than a girlfriends get-away or a couple’s retreat. Knowing in advance which hotels and destinations are appropriate for “your” trip is key to an enjoyable stay.
Check out weather conditions. Know what to expect at your destination so you can pack accordingly. At the same time, keep in mind that there is a 50/50 chance the forecast will be wrong.
After doing your research, plan your itinerary. Book your accommodation, book sightseeing attractions, book special events that might sell out such as concerts, plays, etc. If there is a specific restaurant you’d like to visit that might be heavily booked, make a reservation ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
Another key to success is don’t try to cram a lot into each day. Have two or three major attractions in mind, and then let the rest of the day fill in naturally.
Although I like to plan ahead, I also realize that many unforeseen circumstances can arise to put a dent in the best laid plans. Be prepared to pivot if you are forced to alter on-the-go, and make the best of the situation.
Visit a bookstore, wander around, sit in a park, linger over lunch, spend a little longer at the wine bar. It’s much less stressful when you realize that some things are beyond your control.
This is the first item you should pack for every trip. Be it airport security lines, construction slow-downs, tardy hospitality service or unwelcome weather conditions — keep calm and carry on. Sometimes the things that try your patience the most will turn out to be a great story to recall once you’re home again.

Christine Lehn grew up in a large rural family and she exudes that family vibe as she goes about her business as Executive Director of the Leamington Half Century Centre.
In June of 2015, Lehn took the job as Executive Director and hasn’t looked back — navigating and pivoting through a pandemic — and watching the membership rebound at the club.
During her tenure at the Half Century Centre, she’s introduced programs such as line dancing, drum fit, darts and other fun activities for members to enjoy.
They’ve got an annual chili cook-off to look forward to, as well as regular excursions to the Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia, murder mysteries, comedy shows and a twice-ayear fashion show. All of this is in addition to ongoing card games, billiards, crafts and puzzles and many other activities provided at the centre.
MONDAY, WEDNESDAY
While memberships to such clubs tends to fluctuate, Lehn says the membership at the club is on the rise — up 34 per cent over the numbers when she took over 10 years ago.
Membership numbers were stagnant when she took the job and she’s happy to say that 282 members now use the club and they are all active members.
“I’m proud of the fact that we’ve got the numbers on the rise,” she said at the club last month. “I enjoy seeing the smiling faces and listening to all the laughter.”
She’s also proud that in 10 years they’ve been able to keep the annual cost of membership at $45, in spite of the inflation that abounds in the world. She says that the joy brought to the people who use the centre is the big payoff for her.
Hired originally due to her ability to write grants, Lehn has fit right into the fabric of the membership, with hands-on participation in many of the activities and events.
She is also the current chair of the Leamington Seniors Advisory Committee — a group that advocates for seniors at the municipal level. She and Martin Girash are the only two founding members still on the committee.
Lehn and her husband Chris also keep busy with their own large family — they each brought three now-grown children into their marriage — spending as much time as possible with their nine grandchildren.
With a degree in social work, Christine is very aware of the challenges facing seniors and their social interaction. In fact, she is involved in a program through the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), where doctors can now prescribe memberships to senior centres to help patients with loneliness and isolation.
She’s been known around the club to pull people into her office who are struggling or down and take measures to cheer them up and help them. It’s all part of keeping the club running smoothly and being welcoming.
But, like any well-oiled machine, the Leamington Half Century Centre doesn’t run without the dedication of dozens of volunteers.
“My volunteers make everything possible,” says Lehn. “Without them, we wouldn’t have what we have.”

Sharon Thorpe , RN, MScN , is happy to be sharing her knowledge of nursing with the next generation of nurses.
Kingsville native Sharon Thorpe, a University of Windsor alumna and sessional instructor, is known for her professionalism, mentorship and collaborative spirit.
She was recently highlighted by the University of Windsor during National Nursing Week, with glowing testimonials from colleagues and students alike.
“Growing up in Kingsville, I personally knew only one person who was a nurse. On my graduation from Kingsville District High School, I followed this nurse to Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in London, Ontario,” says Sharon. “This opened a whole new world for me.”
Sharon came from a large extended family who have been in the Kingsville area since the early 1800s. Her mother, Edna Cascadden Thorpe, a long-time Kingsville school teacher, also influenced her career, and her choice to go to London for nursing.
Sharon says her mother loved teaching but she saw firsthand how hard her mother had to work every evening preparing lessons. “As it turned out for me, nursing was every bit as much a challenge,” she adds.
When Sharon graduated from Victoria Hospital and Western University in Public Health Nursing, she committed to coming to the Windsor Victorian Order of Nurses for one year in return for a
bursary she received to pay her tuition at Western University for a diploma in Public Health Nursing.
“I eventually got a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science at the University of Windsor,” she said.
After practicing home visiting nursing for five years, Sharon took on the task of teaching nursing at St. Clair College for 20 years before joining the faculty at the University of Windsor.
“As a nurse educator, I worked with the university faculty to develop the first Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum in 2000,” she said. “This established nursing as a fouryear degree program for both college and university students.”
The program has been well recognized and has recently received a seven-year accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.
“Working collaboratively with other health care professionals to give quality care to patients and families is a satisfying part of the profession.”
As a Sessional Instructor in Community Health Nursing at the University of Windsor, Sharon acts as a Faculty Advisor to students and as a liaison between community health agencies who appoint preceptors for each student assigned to their agency.
This arrangement gives fourth year students the opportunity to have hands-on experience. Students follow a registered nurse and work together with patients and families managing chronic illnesses at home or in a community facility.
She has plenty of advice for those wanting to enter the profession. “For those students who want to pursue nursing, it is important for them to realize that it is a very rewarding but challenging field,” says Sharon.
According to Sharon, nursing has changed dramatically over the course of her career. The responsibilities are far greater as nurses are taught to give more skilled nursing care.
The roles of registered nurses and nurse practitioners have expanded and will continue to become more demanding over the next decade.
As for her own future, she still enjoys teaching the profession.
“I take assignments on a year-to-year basis because I still enjoy working with students and I continue to stress the need for lifelong learning in this profession,” she says. “It is also the support of the Faculty of Nursing that keeps me returning to this profession that I love.”
