Small steps for a greener home (NC) Practicing green habits goes beyond sorting through your trash.

There are many things we can do in and around our homes to play a small but significant part in waste reduction. Follow these three easy tips to keep your landfill contribution to a minimum.

Reuse and recycle.

Purging old things that have been stashed away for seasons doesn’t need to be daunting. Try tackling one area of your house at a time and work through the rest in stages. Start in the garage where clutter tends to pile up. Instead of holding on to old items you no longer use, recycle them. Drop off your used tires through Rethink Tires’ Used Tires Program. You can drop off up to four tires for free at a registered collector.

Once recycled, your old tires are transformed into sustainable products, like rubber landscape tiles, playground surfacing, roofing shakes and athletic flooring.

Repair and refurbish.

Channel your inner creativity by completing fixer-uppers around the home. With DIY tips and tricks at your fingertips, projects can be done on a budget. Start small by working through jobs like repairing light fixtures or refurbishing furniture. No home workshop? Check out your local community for maker spaces or repair cafés that offer access to equipment to

help you with your project. Not only will refurbishing save you money, it will also lessen your impact by diverting waste from landfills.

Extend the life of materials.

Shopping at second-hand shops or consignment stores offers one-ofa-kind pieces that are trendy and discounted. You can also extend the life of your own items by repurposing different garments and materials.

Try repurposing old clothing into vintage styles or using the rubber from old tires for shoe soles or belts. If you’ve run out of uses for your old items, visit your local community centre donation drop box.

Your furnace isn’t working — what do you do?

(NC) It’s always important to make sure that your furnace is in good working order, but as we prepare for the cold weather, the need becomes that much greater. After all, your furnace is what will help keep your home warm and toasty.

A working furnace is also a matter of safety — any issues could expose you and your loved ones to dangerous and deadly carbon monoxide.

If you experience a problem, you will need to contact a licensed gas technician. Depending on what issues they find with it or any other natural gas piping, vents or appliances connected to it, you may get a warning tag.

There are two types of warning tags – A and B. An A tag means there’s an imminent danger of carbon monoxide, and for safety your natural gas service will be shut off. If you get a B tag, which means your furnace doesn’t pose an immediate threat, you’ll be given a few weeks to have it repaired by a licensed gas technician.

Finding a technician Websites like the Technical Safety Standards and Safety Authority and the Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada can help you find a licensed gas technician in your area.

In most cases, the technician you hire will make the necessary repairs, turn your gas back on and clear the tag by notifying your natural gas utility — either Enbridge Gas or Union Gas.

Keep your gas equipment safe this winter (NC) Preparing and protecting your household for the frigid months ahead could be one of the best ways to keep your family safe. Although your outdoor natural gas meter is designed to withstand the harsh weather, heavy or hard-packed snow and ice on it can be a safety hazard. Here are a few tips to keep things running smoothly this winter: • Have your furnace and other natural gas equipment inspected by a licensed technician before the cold weather arrives.

• Never let snow or ice completely cover your meter. Use a broom to sweep snow away from your meter, and always maintain a clear path.

• Never kick or hit your gas meter or piping in order to free up snow and ice.

• You should also clear any snow or ice from the external vent for your furnace, fireplace, water heater and clothes dryer.

• Never shovel, blow or plow snow up against your gas meter equipment.

• If there’s a fire hydrant near your home, make sure it is clear and accessible in case there is an emergency.
