A NOTE FROM FACULTY SENATE Welcome, SPCC Faculty, to the 2017 Faculty of the Year Award Season.

On behalf of the Faculty Senate, I would like to express my excitement and commitment to our new award process. As you know, this past fall a committee of our peers, under the direction of Faculty Senate, came together for the heroic challenge of redesigning the way we select Faculty of the Year. This student-initiated, peer-selected process is a melding of the best practices of many well-respected institutions and how they honor and recognize their most distinguished faculty.

All SPCC Faculty carry a level of integrity and respect deserving of their craft. It is my sincere desire that this new process will equitably and consistently celebrate the meaningful accomplishments of our esteemed faculty. Faculty Senate is dedicated to the service of faculty in their pursuit of teaching excellence and institutional advancement. I believe our motto of Action, Visibility, and Involvement represents this commitment. I look forward to the great things we can accomplish together in the future.

As last year's Faculty of the Year recipient, I'm honored to chair the committee charged with identifying this year's winner. As SPCC faculty, each of us strive to instill mastery of knowledge and skill, value for self and others, a broadened perspective of the world, and a connected and authentic way of living in each of our students. This is no easy task!

Like many of you, as a new faculty member, my view of an instructor’s role was fairly limited. I have learned over the years that our job is much more diverse and all-encompassing. We are not just teachers. Many days we are mentors, cheerleaders, scholars, counselors, recruiters and a jack-of-all-trades. Each of us bring rich, varied experiences that influence and enhance our teaching, while inspiring our students to broaden their perspective and to find their unique role in an ever-changing community and world.

We know that our faculty represent some of the finest at any institution. And, it won't be an easy task to select one to join the ranks of the Faculty of the Year recipients. We hope that this guide is helpful in defining the process and expectations as we move forward to celebrate and recognize the wonderful faculty at SPCC by selecting this year's finalists and winner. Thank you for being a part of the continual transformation and growth of our SPCC students, college, community and world.

FACULTY OF THE YEAR The Faculty of the Year Award is given annually to a deserving full-time, curriculum faculty member who provides exceptional educational experiences for their students by demonstrating excellence in engagement and involvement.

Overview of Process Each year, a marketing campaign will kick-off the nomination process. Faculty are nominated by their students, and asked to confirm acceptance of that nomination by completing an application. Those who are eligible and submit all required application materials will be considered, with finalists and the winner selected by the seven-member Faculty of the Year Award Committee, who will oversee the process.

Faculty of the Year Award Committee The Faculty of the Year Award Committee will be comprised of the following members: Prior year’s Faculty of the Year Award recipient SGA President Two Faculty Senate Members-at-Large Three faculty members Student Nomination Period Students are invited to recognize their outstanding faculty by nominating them for Faculty of the Year. To do so, students are required to submit a separate Student Nomination Form for each faculty member they wish to recognize. Students must be currently enrolled at South Piedmont Community College to submit the nomination form.

Nomination Period The nomination period, which may vary from year to year based on the academic calendar, will begin after fall break and end before spring break. The 2017 nomination period will run from March 6-15th, 2017.

Faculty Application All eligible faculty who have received at least one student nomination will be notified via email no later than one week following the end of the nomination period. The email will share news of their nomination and invite them to continue in the process by completing the Faculty Application. Faculty will have at least ten days to complete the application.

Faculty Eligibility All full-time, curriculum faculty are eligible for nomination. Faculty of the Year Award receipients from the prior three academic years are not eligible to win, and therefore not permitted to submit the Faculty Application.

Committee Responsibilities The Faculty of the Year Award Committee will meet to narrow the list of nominees to three finalists, using the Faculty of the Year Nominee Ranking Rubric. This should occur no later than two weeks after the due date for the Faculty Application.

The Committee will notify all nominees of their status following the ranking process, with the finalists given further instructions on how to proceed in the process.

The Committee will meet before spring break to begin the process of selecting the winner, which includes the following: Unannounced, Classroom Teaching Observation Video Interviews with finalists The Committee will select the winner before May.

Finalists Expectations The three finalists are required to participate in a classroom observation and videotaped interview with the Committee to continue in the process. Additionally, they are required to attend all College graduation activities.

Recognition of Finalists Finalists for Faculty of the Year will be recognized internally in SPCC’s iCONNECT newsletter. They will receive an invitation to the Board of Trustees Graduation Banquet (if applicable), reserved floor seating at graduation, and tickets to distribute to family and friends.

Finalists will be announced and receive a photo and/or award to recognize their achievement at graduation.

Announcement of Faculty of the Year Recipient The Faculty of Year award recipient will be announced at graduation and invited on stage to receive a plaque by the College’s President or the President’s designee. Additionally, the achievement will be announced at Fall Focus, or other institutional meetings of faculty and staff.

Rewards for Faculty of the Year Award Recipient The Faculty of the Year winner will receive: Individual plaque announcing award Nameplate on institutional plaque to be displayed on campus Visa gift card Parking space at preferred campus News feature on College’s website Press release and active attempts to be featured in local newspapers Internal feature in August issue of iCONNECT Awardee Expectations Faculty of the Year Awardees are required to submit a biography and professional photo to be used by the College. Additionally, the recipient is required to serve on the Faculty of the Year Award Committee in the academic year immediately following their award.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Are previous recipients eligible to be nominated for Faculty of the Year?

Yes. Students may nominate any faculty, but Faculty of the Year recipients from the prior three academic years are not eligible to win, and therefore not allowed to submit the Faculty Application. For 2017, this would apply to Maile Nelson (2016), Alycia Parsons (2015), and Amber McGraw (2014).

How long does it take to complete the Faculty Application? Is is required?

In most cases, the Faculty Application should take no more than an hour or so to complete— much like a job application. Of course this is an optional process. If you're nominated, but don't want to be considered for Faculty of the Year, simply don't complete the Faculty Application.

Why are the finalists' interviews recorded?

The interviews are recorded for marketing purposes only. The footage may be used to create a short video about the finalists and recipient.

How will the Committee observe faculty teaching online courses?

The Committee is prepared to observe virtual classrooms and will meet with a member of distance learning to view faculty's Moodle courses.

Some faculty have over a hundred students, while others have a few. How will this affect my chances of being nominated?

Remember, all it takes is one nomination to be considered. The Committee and SGA will work hard to make sure students know they need to nominate their excellent faculty during the nomination period.

Is this selection process perfect?

This selection process is not perfect, and there are sure to be some kinks the Committee will have to work out. But, we're excited about the new process and hope you are, too!
