Merchant assaultedat TomatoBoy

Threemaleyoutharefacingcriminalchargesafter assaultingtheowner/managerofTomatoBoyin broaddaylightinsidehisstoreSept.19.

TheincidentoccurredinHighPrairieat1:18p.m. whentwoboysenteredthestore.Thevictim,Greg Radstaak,saystheyweretryingtostealbooze.Ascuffleensuedbeforepolicearrived.Uponarrival,they arrestedtwooftheboysRadstaakwasfightingwith, thethirdwasquicklyarrested.Hehadalreadyleftthe sceneafterbecominginvolvedintheattack.Twoothersservingaslookoutsescaped.

HighPrairieRCMPS/Sgt.BruceTarzwelldescribedtheincidentasa“shopliftinggonebad”.

“Inanattempttogetstuffanaltercationensued,” hesays.

AnyinjuriesRadstaaksufferedwereminor.Hedid notseektreatmentathospitalandquicklyreturnedto work.

Oneoftheboysisfacingchargesofuttering threats,possessionofpropertyobtainedbycrime,assault,andassaultwithaweapon.Theothertwoboys faceasinglecountofassault.Ageswerenotdisclosed butallareintheirupperteens.

Allthreeboysappearedbeforeajusticeofthe peacenextdayandwerereleasedunderconditions.

Radstaakdeclinedcommentbecausetheincident isbeforethecourts,buthedidlet SouthPeaceNews watchthevideo.AclearscuffleensueswithRadstaak beingpunchedandkickedandanattempttotearhis clothesoff.Oneboybrandisheswhatappearstobea collapsiblemetalbaton.

Tarzwellsayscrime–especiallytheft–isontheincreaseintheHighPrairieareabutthereisaplanin place.

“Wehavesomestuffintheworks,”hesays.“I’llcall itstayingsafe.”

Onceagain,Tarzwellispleadingwiththepublicto organizeCitizensonPatrol,whichactsindependently fromtheRCMP,althoughpolicewillassignaliaisonto workwiththem.

Countylawmakersgrant reprievetocatsanddogs

Concernedaboutstray anddangerouscatsin dogsinthepastfew months,BigLakes Countycouncilisnot readytobolsteritsanimal-controlbylaw.

Atitsregularmeeting Sept.17,councilpasseda motiontoremoveproposedchangestoaddcat regulationstothebylaw. Asaresult,councilwill notmakeanychangesto theanimalcontrolbylaw.

Administrationproposedtoaddaprogram tospayandneutercats andintroduceanannual doglicensefeeof$25for eachcanine.

Revenuefromdog licenceswouldhavebeen usedtocreateaprogram tospayandneutercats, saidBrettHawken,directorofcommunityand protectiveservices.

Currently,thecounty requiresdogshavelicencesthatarefreeandfor thelifetimeoftheanimal.

ReeveRobertNygaard favouredstrongerregulations.

“Thisbylawgivesus morecontrol,”Nygaard said.“Let’sgiveouranimal-controlofficermore control.”

Butsomecouncillors saysitisn’trealistic.

“It’sadreamworldto spayandneutercats,” SouthSunsetHouse–GilwoodCouncillorAnn Stewartsaid.

Shewondershowthe countywouldcatchthe catsinthefirstplace.

“Byputtinginacatbylaw,it’sgoingtocostusa lotofmoneywhenit’snot goingtodoanything,” Stewartsaid.

Agravedigger’sworstnightmare

Asoneofseveral gravediggersatGrouard, hehashadtoendureeverygravedigger’sworst nightmare:digginginto anothergravesite.Ithas occurredafewtimesat theGrouardCemetery, wheremanygravesare unmarked.

“Weusedtohitsome (gravesites)there,”says Cardinal.“Buthowdid weknow?Therewereno markers,nomounds. Therewasnowayyou couldtell.”

Itisindescribablethe feelingonewouldendure.

“I’dsayaprayerand keepgoing,”saysCardinal.“Therewasnothing elseyoucoulddo.Wedidn’tknow.Wedidn’tblame ourselves.”

untilafewyearsago whenagroupofconcernedcitizensdecided toputastoptoitand formtheGrouardCemeteryCommitteeMapping Project.Thegoalwas simpleyetdifficultand expensive:locateas manygravesaspossible andmarkthem.

Thecommitteeheldan updateatthegraveyard Sept.14.Afewdozenpeopleattended.Some wantedtoheartheupdatewhileotherscame topayrespectstofriends andmembers.

Dependingonwhoyou talkto,thereareatleast 1,362peopleburiedatthe site,perhapsmore.CommitteememberVicky Barsalousaysthereare 1,233knownpeopleburiedthereand169“not knowntodate.”Anyway yousliceit,itisalot.

“Canyouimaginehow (gravediggers)felt?” asksBarsalou,when findingoldgravesites.

However,sincethe mappingprojectbegan, peoplearephoningbeforedigging.Itisvery satisfyingandfulfillingto Barsalouandother membersofthecommittee.NoonewantsarepeatofwhatCardinal andothergravediggers endured.

GrouardresidentBerthaAugerremembers howthegravesbecame unmarkedbecauseshe wasthere.

“Wedidit,”shesays, guessingitwasinthe 1960s.“Wehadacleanup crewandtherewereall woodencrosses.Thewillowsovergrewthewhole graveyard.Wedecidedto getridofthewillows.We (cutthemand)piled themup.”

Itwasthensomeone decidedtoburnthem.

“Isaid,‘Don’tsetthe fireyet,’”Augerrecalls. “(Someone)setitonfire anditburnedeverything andalltherestofthe woodencrosses.”

Thefirespreadfrom thewillowpiletonearby driedgrass.Helpedbya stiffbreeze,itwasn’tlong beforetheentiregraveyardwasablaze.The crewgotsomewetsacks andwaterandeventually gotthefireundercontrol butitwastoolate.Althat wasleftweresmoulderingcrosses. Withnothingleftto markthegraves,people starteddiggingrandomly andcameacrosssitesalreadyused.Thiswenton

Augerledthegroupin prayerattheupdate.She askedtheCreatortohelp eachpersonattending andthoseburiedtofind freedom,especiallythe children,somesuspectedtoberesidential schoolvictims.

“Theywerestillchildren,theysuffered.We sufferedwiththem.

“Theyneverwent home,”Augeradded. “Weneverknewwhere theywent.

“Ifwelookatit,the wholeworldsuffered,” sheconcluded.

Augeraskedeveryone toprayforthechildren andtheCreatortostand withthemandhelphealing.

“Allwecandonowis recollect.”

ThereseMorriswas hiredtoleadtheproject. Thecemeterywasfirst usedin1873andisstill active.Familymembers continuetheIndigenous traditionofdigging gravesbyhand.

However,withtherecentuseofgroundpenetratingradar,acommitteewasformedtoright thepastandproperly map the cemetery.The GrouardSeniorsCommunityClubinitiatedef-

tothephotographsand informationgathered fromthegravemarkers toprovideanoutletfor peopletofindtheirloved ones;

torGoudreau,inkeeping thecemeterytidyand maintained.

“Tolkoisveryproud andhonouredandprivilegedtobepartnerwith thelocalcommunity,”he said.

“Wejustwanttosay thanksonbehalfof Tolko,”headded.

Inthespiritofreconciliation,Tolkoindeed doesitspart.

Thecommittee’swork alsorunsparallelineffortstofindunmarked gravestoresidential schoolssinceGrouard wasthelocationof nearbySt.Bernard’s Mission.

Thisarticlebeginsonasadnote,asHerMajestyQueenElizabethIIpassedawayonSept.8 leavingbehindanenormousvoidthatforalong timewilllikelygounfilled.ThereignofHerMajestywasonelongerthanthelivingmemoryof manyCanadians.Indeed,herlifelongcommitmenttoquietserviceassovereignoftenwent unnoticedandmerelywasabackdroptomanyof ourlives.ButtheworldthatQueenElizabethII ascendedtothethroneunderandtheoneshe leftbehindcouldnotbemorenightandday.

Theworldof1952wasonereelingfromthe endoftheSecondWorldWarandoneofBritain andCanadarapidlymovingawayfromtheidea ofanEmpire.Althoughtherewasmuchresistancetoitattimes,QueenElizabethfulfilledher constitutionaldutiesattheendoftheBritish Empire,andherlegacyofcommitmenttoparliamentaryconventionandresponsibilitycontinues acrosstheCommonwealthinmanyofthese countriestothisverydaywhatevertheirexisting relationshiptotheCrown.

Atthetimeofherpassing,shewasthesecond longestreigningsovereigninhumanhistory. Manyjokedthatshemayliveforever.Andwith herabsence,itwasfinallynoticeditcanonlybe saidthatherlegacyisonethatwillcontinueto beapositiveinfluenceforgenerationswellinto thefuture.

WithherpassingbeginsthereignofKing CharlesIIIasKingofCanada,whosereignwill hopefullyalwayskeepinmindhismother’sexampleofservice.

AlthoughunemploymentroseinAlbertalast month,oureconomycontinuestogiverobustindicatorsofdynamicgrowthfortheforeseeable future.TheworlddemandforAlbertaresources inthesetimesremainsstrong,andourgovernmentwillcontinuetofiercelyadvocateforpursuingmoreeconomicopportunitiesinvolvingthese world-classresourcesforthebettermentofour province.

OurAlbertagovernmentendeditsannouncementspauseearlierthismonth,sokeepyour earstothegroundforanymoreupdatesfrom yourAlbertagovernmentaboutanynewprogramsorinitiativestheprovinceispursuingfor thebettermentofourcommunity,beitinvestmentsinourcommunityorevenourregional economy,ourgovernmentwillremainhardat worktoensureAlbertafinishestheyearstrong.

ThefallseasonhastrulybeguninLesser SlaveLakeandIwouldliketousethisasa chancetoremindeveryonetokeepinmindto dresssuitablyfortheoccasion.Itwillnotbelong untilwinterarrivessoonsoIamhopefulthefall weatherismoderateandeveryoneinLesser SlaveLakegetstoenjoythechangingcolours. PeaceRiver–Westlock MPArnoldViersenhas onlyhighhopesforPierrePoilievreasthenew leaderofthefederalConservativeParty.

“Iamthrilledthatwe arestartingthisnew chapteroftheConservativePartyofCanada,” Viersensaysinanews releaseSept.12.

“PierrePoilievrehas demonstratedthatheisa strongandcapable leaderreadytofightfor Canadianswhoarehurtingfromhighinflation andthecostofliving.”

PoilievrewasannouncedthewinnerSept. 10aftercollecting68.15 percentofthevoteonthe firstballot.

“Today,theConservativePartystandsunited andreadytoreplacethe corrupt(Justin)Trudeau (Liberal)government,” Viersensays.

Thebottomline,Shunteradds,isawareness.

“Wedoneedassistancefromthecommunityasa whole,addingitcanbeassimpleasaskingsuspicious peoplewhytheyareonsomeone’spropertywithout permission.

“TheothernightGreg(Radstaak)hadsomechainsawsstolen.Hedidn’tknowhowbad(theft)was.The issueistherearen’tenoughpeoplewhoknowhow baditis.”

Shunterisalsoconcernedaboutthelackofcoverageintown.Tarzwellsaysthethievesarenotstupid, theysometimesdivertpoliceawaytoruralareason falsecalls,thencommitcrimesintown.Policehave nochoicebuttorespondtothecalls.Itonlyperpetuatestheproblem.

“Thebanditsarestealingnightafternightafter night,”saysShunter.

Thereisagrowingconcerninthisnationregardingvolunteering.Statisticsclearlyshowthevolunteerbaseisagingandtherearefewerandfewer peoplesteppingforward.Thequestionis:whyisthis volunteerbasedwindling?

Ifthisnewspaperhadtheanswer,wewouldbe tabbedmiracleworkers.Instead,wecancontinually pleadwiththepublictogetinvolvedandmakeadifference.Wewilldosoagain.

Whathasoccurredovertimeissocietyhas changedandpeoples’attitudes.Wehaveraiseda generationofpeoplewherefartoomanyexpectthe “otherguy”willdoit.

Weallleadbusylives,somemorethanothers.In thelastfewweeks,POPSHomeHardwareowner RonShunterhaspatrolledtowninanefforttocurb crime.HeisHighPrairie’sone-manCitizensonPatrolgroup.Hedeservesmuchpraiseforhisefforts.

Butwhereiseveryoneelse?HighPrairiesocial mediapagesareripewithconcernovercrime,yet noonehassteppedforwardtoorganizealocalchapter,likeBrianHolmbergdidyearsago.Northern SunriseCountyhasaveryactiveRuralCrimeWatch organization.TheHighPrairieRCMPhavepleaded forCitizensonPatroltore-organizebutnothing!

Wecouldgivecountlessotherexamplesofcitizens steppingforward.Manyneveraskandreceivea dimefortheeffortsandgoodforthem!

Somelocalgovernmentsofferpayforcitizensto serveoncommittees.Thiswasnotthecaseyears ago.Whathaschanged?Throughnotfaultoftheir own,theselocalgovernmentsdecidedtothrowloot atthepublicinhopesofattractingafewpeopleto help.Itexactlyhasnotsolvedtheproblem.Ithas worsenedit.Now,toomanypeopleexpecttobepaid. Theslipperyslopewascreatedanditisnowcovered withice.

Besides,offeringabitofpayoftenneverattracts thebestpeople.Rather,itencouragessomewhojust wanttocollectacheque.

Thereisnomagicwandtofixtheproblemofvolunteering.Itisespeciallydifficultnowwiththeexplosionofsocialmedia.Criticismofeveryorganizationisrampantnomatterhowmanygoodthings theydo.JustlookatthecriticismoftheHighPrairie ElksregardingtherodeoandtheHighPrairieCommunityBeautificationAssociationregarding Light-Up.Nocommunityeventgoesunscathed.

Itmakesitdifficultforthevolunteerstoturnthe othercheekwhenmanypeoplecomplainingdonothingbutsitbehindakeyboardandbitch.Theirnames arenotexactlylitteredallovertheexecutivelistsof volunteercommunitygroups.

Ifmorepeoplesteppedforwardtotrulymakea difference,wewouldallbebetteroff.Itstartswith makingtime,andaconcertedeffortimproveyour community.Somemaynothavealotoftimetocontribute,butaconcertedeffort,suchastheone Shunterismaking,canmakeadifference.

ThesecondweekendinSeptember,Ihadaboothattwo eventsinSlaveLake.Thefirst wasasavolunteerwiththeSlave LakeandAreaMentalHealth Networkandthesecondasthe leaderoftheSlaveLakeWriters’ Group.Inbothcases,Ispoketo somestrangersaboutourmutual interests.Itstruckmehowimportantitistofindpeoplewithsimilarinterests.

Iabsolutelyhatesmalltalk,but donotgetmestartedonwriting, communityinvolvementormentalhealth.I’lltalkyourearoff!

Thisisexactlywhathappened atthesecondevent,Artinthe Park.ApersonIhadnevermet beforesatdown.Wehadalong, animatedconversationabout writingandmentalhealth. Whetherornotweseeeachother again,wewereabletobrighten eachother’sday.

IhavebeeninSlaveLakefor overthreeyearsnow.Manyofthe peopleIseeonaregularbasisare thosepeopleinthefirstfew monthsIconnectedwithonsome level.

Ireallyenjoyhavingabroad networkofpeopleIcanaskquestionsofandhavemeaningfulconversationswith.Forme,alotof theseconnectionshavecome

throughvolunteeringforgroups thatinterestme.Whatbetterway tofindpeoplewithsimilarinterests!

Volunteersarethebackboneof anysmallcommunity,butvolunteerburnoutisveryreal.Ialways encouragepeopletovolunteerin placesorforthingswhichinterest them.

'Manyofthepeople Iseeonaregularbasis arethosepeopleinthe firstfewmonthsI connectedwithonsomelevel.'

Thereareanumberofvery worthwhilecauseswhichIdon’t volunteerwith,becausemypassionisn’tthere.However,itmatterstosomeone,andsoIamvery gladthattherearepeoplewho arewillingtostepupandtakethe efforttomakeitwork.

Januaryof2020,ItooktheRuralMentalHealthNetwork‘animator’training.Thisisaprogram whichtrainspeoplelivinginaruralcommunitytoanimate-bring tolife-agrassrootsmovementto improvementalhealth.Since then,Ihavebeenworkingwith twootherSlaveLakeanimators andtheSlaveLakeandArea MentalHealthNetworktomake thisareality.

Oneofthethingsthathasstuck

withmesincetrainingistheidea ofstrengths-basedcommunitydevelopment.Inanutshellthis means,“Everyonehasthings theyarepassionateabout.That passionistheirmotivationtoact. Aleader’sroleistohelpthem identifythisandencourage them.”

ThisisoneofthereasonsIam soenthusiasticaboutencouragingpeopletofind‘theirpeople.’ Peoplearoundthemwithsimilar hobbies,causes,orwhathave you.

WhileItalkwithanyone,Ihave alotmoreincommonwithsome people.Thesearenotnecessarily thepeopleIwouldguessfromthe outside,butsomethinginternalis similar.

Idonotmeanthatweagreeon everything.IdonotthinkI100per centagreewithanyoneofmy friends,butIdorespectthem, valuetheiropinion,andenjoy talkingwiththem.

IamverygladIhavestarted throwingawidenetforacquaintancesandlettingtimeandconnectedinterestswinnowthese downtofriends.

Also,Ihavenothingagainst havingagoodconversationwitha strangerandlettingthatbethe oneandonlytimethatwelightup eachother’slives.Noteveryconversationisagoodone,butwhen onestarts.Enjoyit!

talsthatperformed hearttransplantsgotthe samemoneyashospitals.BS!Theygetpaid bytheprocedureand theneedsofthepatient!

Itdeclaresthat privatizationistheonly waytogo.Notreally.It mighthavebeenabit morebelievableifIhad notjustwatchedavideo byanAmericanthatis borneoutbyeveryother reportIhaveseen.No matterhowexpensive theFraserInstitute makesourhealthcare sounditisstillcheaper thantheAmerican privatizedsystem.The privatizationresultsina profitdrivendelivery(I kidyounot!)whereyou havetouseadoctor,a hospitalandwhatever elseyoucanthinkofthat isinthatinsurance

Canadaranksthird amongsttheG7 countries,afterJapanat 4.7percentandFrance at7.7percent.Canada’s rateremainsbelowthat ofItaly(10.6percent), theUnitedStates(11.8 percent),theUnited Kingdom(13.1percent) andGermany(16.6per cent).Still,foodinflation ishurtingCanadianconsumers,andthenightmarewillnotendany timesoon.

Canadianshavebeen tryingtocopewith higherfoodandmenu pricesinmanyways. TheAgri-FoodAnalytics Lab,inpartnershipwith Caddle,investigated whatCanadianconsumershavebeendoingto dealwithhigherfood pricesinthelastyear andarereleasingtheresultsofthestudy.

Somehaveoptedto

Anditchangesus.It defiles,degradesanddesensitizesus.Ourconsciencesbecome scarredtothepointwe longerevennotice,let alonecare.Itisjustnormal.

EvenChristianshave becomesaturatedand desensitizedthroughthe entertainmentweconsume,andtheconversationsweareexposedto atwork,atplay,and eveninourownhomes. ThisisparticularlyegregiousforChristianswho claimtoloveandhonour theLord,butwhoseuse

ofthelanguagehasdeterioratedtothepoint theyarenotevenaware ofwhattheyaredoing.

Hereisjustoneillustration.Thethirdofthe TenCommandments says,inExodus20:7, “Thoushaltnottakethe nameoftheLordthy Godinvain;fortheLord willnotholdhimguiltlessthattakethHis nameinvain.”

Youwillhearpeople saythatcommonexpressionssuchas,“Oh myGod!”or“OMG”and “GoodLord!”arenot ‘swears’,‘cusswords’,or takingtheLord’sname invainbecauseitisjust theequivalentofsaying “Wow.”

Thisisnotcorrect!

Clearlysuch‘cuss words’as,“Goddamn it!,”“GoodGodAlmighty!”and“Jesus Christ!”andalltheir variations,bytoneand usage,aretakingthe

Lord’snameinvain.

However,anyflippant, disrespectful,thoughtless,carelessormundanereferencetoGod alsoqualifiesasviolation oftheThirdCommandment.Godisholy.Heis pure and righteous.He isofsuchhigh,exalted statuswecannoteven begintocomprehend Hismajesticgloryand highestate.Tospeakof Him,orHisname,inany whatthatisnotreverent,honourable,orrespectfulisafailureto recognizeHisrightful exaltednessasGod. Thus,itbecomesamisuseorabuseofHis Name.

TheScripturesare clear.WearetotakeHis nameseriouslyanduse Hisnamereverentlyand honourably.Inthatlight wecannowunderstand thatanythoughtless, careless,common,or flippantuseofHisname wouldmaketheuser guiltyofusingGod’s nameinvain.

Takeconscientious caretoneveruseGod’s namewithanythingless thanthoughtfulreverenceandrespect.While wemayhavebecomedesensitizedtousingHis nameimproperly,re-

memberthatGodhas notbeendesensitizedto peoplemisusingand abusingHisname.

NorthernSunriseCounty(NSC)hasreviewedand approvedtheNSCAgriculturalServiceBoard(ASB) resolutionforSyntheticFertilizerEmissionsanddirectedadministrationtosubmitittotheASBregional conferenceOct.28inGrandePrairie.

Thefederalgovernmentrecentlyannouncedit wouldattempttoreducegreenhousegas(GHG) emissionsassociatedwithsyntheticfertilizerby30 percentbelow2020levelsby2030.Theyhavealsoset atargetfor2025ofachieving$75billioninagricultural exportsbutcuttingtheuseofsyntheticfertilizerwill inevitablyreducethecropproductionforCanadian farmers.

“Thecountywantstoensurethatourproducers cancontinuetogrowsustainablehigh-yieldingagriculturalproductsforthemandCanadatoremaineconomicallycompetitiveintheworldmarket,especially withincreasingdemandsforfood,feed,andbiofuel products,bothdomesticandabroad,”saysReeve CarolynKolebaba.

“Toachieveproductiondemands,theuseoffertilizerisessentialtoproduceincreasinglyhighcrop yields.”

NSC’sASBresolutionrequeststhegovernment utilizethe4RClimate-SmartProtocoluseinstead, whichwasdesignedtopromotesustainableuseof fertilizerincropproduction.The4RsoffertilizerapplicationareRightSource,RightRate,RightTime, andRightPlace.Theresolutionindicatedthatthe4R Climate-SmartProtocolwouldoptimizeplantnutrientuptake,increaseyield,maximizeprofitsand minimizenitrousoxideemissions.

“Canadianagriculturalproducerscurrentlyutilize fertilizerefficientlyandevenmarginalreductionsin fertilizerusewillhindercropproduction,threatening thewell-beingofCanadians,aswellastheglobalfood supply,”saysKolebaba.

“Thisrestrictiononfertilizermayresultinsoilnutrientsbeingunderapplied,whichwouldthreatenagriculturalsustainabilitybyreducingsoilfertilityand soilnutrientreserves.Aswell,ourproducersareusingthe4Rinproductionandareveryconscientiousof thehealthofthelandstheyproducefoodon,”she adds.

TheASBalsoasksthatmorefundingbeprovided forregionalresearchanddevelopmentregardingfertilizeruseefficiencyandthatthefederalgovernment suspendtargetsuntilthepropertoolstomeasure emissionsforproducersareavailable.

“Accordingtothe RCMP,mostvehicle theftsarecrimesofopportunityandvehicle ownerscanfollowsome straightforwardadviceto reducethesecrimes,” Tarzwellsays.

“Ifcriminalscansee something,theywillsteal it.”

Hesaystheftsofvehiclesgivethievesauseful toolintheiractivity.

“Vehicletheftsare morecommonforcriminalswhoneedavehicle tocarryouttheir crimes,”Tarzwellsays.

“Withresidential break-and-enters, thievesarelookingfor easilysellableitems.”

RCMPsaytheftsfrom vehiclesaremorelikely tohappeninareasthat containmanyvehicles andhaveminimalpedestriantraffic.

“Investigatorssaythe theftofvehiclesincreasesinareaswithless visibility,suchasrural properties,”Tarzwell says.

“Butregardlessofthe location,ifyouleaveavehiclerunningandunattended,unlockedorwith valuablesinplainsight, theriskisincreased.”

Peoplewhoparkoutsideareadvisedtoalwaysparkinawell-lit areaandtouseasteeringwheellock.

Driverswithgarage dooropenersinsidetheir vehiclesarealsoadvised toremovethembefore leavingthevehicleandto locktheirgarage.

“Ifthevehiclewillbe parkedforanextended periodoftimeinagarage,policealsosuggestsyoudisablepower tothegaragedoor,” Tarzwellsays.

“Peopleshouldalso notleavetheirkeysin their vehicle wheninside thegarage.

TheCommunityPantryProgramisakinto othercommunity’sfood bankservices,butthree localofficessimplyprovidebinsandshelvesto assistwithcollectingand dispersingnon-perishablegoodsandgarden vegetables,whenavailable,topeopleinneed.

“TheCommunityPantryisopentoallresidentsofNorthernSunriseCountyandtheVillageofNampa,”says directorofcommunity servicesAmberHoule.

“Thereisnoreferralor applicationprocess.If someoneneedsfood itemstogetby,theycan

calltheirlocal Nampa/NorthernSunriseCountyFCSSoffice toaccesstheprogram, judgmentfree.”

fortheCommunityProgram,makingiteasier forindividualsorfamilies toaccessatanytime,not justiftheirincomedictatestheireligible.

“Regardlessofifanindividualorfamilyhas madeasuitableincome basedontheirpast year’staxes,theymay nowbegoingthroughdivorce,lossofajob,death inthefamily,etc.thatis impactingtheirabilityto meetbasicneeds,”says Houle,addingtheyhave anopen-doorprogramto anyoneneedingthefood withnoreasonrequired.

“Whenindividualsand familiescomeintoaccesstheCommunity Pantry,wecanchatwith themandprovideadditionallevelsofsupportby linkingthemtootherservicesandprogramsofferedbyouragency.”

ItnowsaysAnton KirtioRink.Kirtiowasa long-timecurlerin Kinusoandinstrumental inbuildingthecurrent rinkinthelate1970s.

Anton’sfather,Anton Sr.,wasborninPolandin 1899,says Sodbusters:A HistoryofKinusoand SwanRiverSettlement HeimmigratedtoCanadain1928.AfterworkinginKinusoforawhile, hehomesteadedinthe area.Hiswifeandolder childrenarrivedin1929.

AntonJr.(elsewhere referredtoasAnton)was borninJuly1936in Kinuso.Hetookoverthe familyfarm.

Thecurrentcurling rinkisthesecondone builtinKinuso.After WorldWarII,Kinuso builtitsfirstcurlingrink, says Sodbusters.

“Thistwo-sheet,regulationicerinkwasbuilt entirelybyvolunteerlabour.”

Constructionstarted inMarch1954,with14 mengoingintothebush tofellenoughtreesto makethelumberforthe rink,adds Sodbusters ThiswasmadeintolumberatEdgarHill’smill. ThebuildingwasaQuonset-styleandwasfinishedJanuary1,1955.

Accordingto Sodbusters, “Whenthe

seasonopenedonlyfive personsinKinusohad curledbefore,nowthere are21rinks(teams)or84 peoplewhoaremembers andregularcurlers.”

Includedwerefour rinksinthejuniorhigh schoolcategory,adds Sodbusters.

Twentyyearslater, Kinusowaslookingatreplacingtheoldrink.

Anton’swidow,Judy, sharesherlatehusband’sconnectionwith theKinusocurlingrink.

“Anton,fromhisearly years,hadalwaysbeen anavidcurler,soafterattendingbonspielselsewhereatrinkswithartificialice,itbecamehis dreamtohavethiskind oficeinKinuso.”

Thespringof1976, Antonandothercommunitymemberssawed 70,000boardfeetoflumber.

However,in1977the planchanged.

Thearticleaddsthe originalideawastobuild somethingbigenoughto houserec-rooms,alibrary,andcraftrooms,as wellasthecurlingrink.

Thecurlingrinkwas builtbytheCentralSlave LakeAgriculturalSociety.TheAgSociety startedin1973,says Sodbusters.Antonwas oneoftheorganizers.He becamepresidentin 1976.Whenthebookwas publishedin1979,hestill heldtheposition.

AccordingtoJudy,to fundthenewcurlingrink andhall,itusedgrants fromtheDepartmentof Agriculture,theImprovementDistrict#17, thelocalRecBoard,and SwanRiverFirstNation. Italsosoldthelumber themembershadcutand heldfundraisingactivities.

Thebuilding,which stillstandsinKinusotoday,wasboughtfrom Behlen-Whickes,says Judy.

“InthelateSummerof 1977,communitymembersoftheSwanRiver First Nation bandstarted layingthefoundation,” saysJudy.“Theshellof thebuildingwasstarted lateinthefallof1977and completedinthespring of1978.Aftermanyhours ofdonatedlabourfromso manyinthecommunity, theinsideofthebuilding wasthencompleted.It housedthreesheetsof ice,asmallkitchen,viewingareadownstairsand upalongwithabarand office.”

Thefirstseasonof curlingstartedinJanuaryof1979.

Attheunveilingofthe

newsign,afewother itemsofcurlingrinkand hallhistory cameup.ThefirstweddingwasTonyandGail Karpa.In1987,the KinusoSchoolgradwas toobigfortheschool gym,sowasheldinthe AgHall.

TheKinusoCurling Rinkhasamixedleague andbonspielseachyear includingamen’s, women’s,andmixed league,loggers,and ‘skeeters’forchildren14 andunder.
