he controversial High Speed Rail line (HS2) from London to Leeds was given the go ahead on 11 February by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. As we have previously reported, Leeds will see a new station built in the South Bank area of Hunslet and the line will approach the station through Stourton and Hunslet. Earlier plans saw the new railway line using the existing rail corridor through Hunslet, which is largely in cuttings and goes under Pepper Road and Balm Road. However last year it was proposed that the entire section from Woodlesford into Leeds should be on an elevated viaduct. A final decision on the viaduct is still awaited. In responding to the

consultation on the viaduct, Leeds City Council was critical of the lack of detailed design information. It stressed the need for effective noise mitigation measures for residents close to the line; high design standards to minimise the visual impact; proper development of the land under the viaduct; and ensuring the viaduct didn’t form a barrier to movement at ground level. Cllr Paul Wray (Hunslet & Riverside) told South Leeds Life: “The government has given the go-a-head for HS2, but no decision has yet been made on the final route and therefore if there will be a viaduct through parts of Stourton and Hunslet. The Council has asked for details on their proposed route to allow it to scrutinise it in detail. “As local Councillors, we

share the concerns of many residents on the impact of a viaduct though their community and are not in favour of it. The government has committed to the Council to consult with residents and this is vital to make sure their concerns are heard. We will hold them to this commitment. “The Council has also demanding urgent clarity on the compensation measures to be put in place for those who will be impacted by the final route, when this is set by government. “More generally, the construction phase will provide a wealth of job opportunities and we need to focus on creating the skills needed, in our communities, to take advantage of these and of those generated by the new station once completed.” Supporters of the HS2

project argue that as well as cutting journey times the new line will free up capacity on the existing network to allow more local services to run. Opponents point to the increasing cost of the project and the loss of natural habitat along the route. However, this announcement appears to be the definitive decision. The development of the new station is seen as a key part of the ‘South Bank’ regeneration plans. Developers are keen build offices and shops close to the station. The station itself will require roads to be rerouted providing an opportunity to promote walking, cycling and public transport over private cars. The Leeds section of the line isn’t expected to open until 2035-40. Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council

and West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Lead and Middleton Park ward member, said: “HS2 is a critical component of our established plans to transform the region, so we very much welcome the government’s go-ahead to deliver the project in full today. “In looking again at the project which the Prime Minister referenced, we have our own plans and ideas to improve the eastern leg and allow it to be delivered faster which we would be keen to discuss with him and the new HS2 Minister. “We remain unequivocal in our clear commitment that HS2 needs to be delivered in full as part of an integrated network with Northern Powerhouse Rail from Liverpool to Hull with improved connectivity to south continued on page 3
