Damage to Belle Isle Circus
n Saturday 24 March 2018 a number of motorbikes and quad bikes caused mayhem on the streets and green spaces of Middleton and Belle Isle. Reports on social media described 8 or 9 bikes on the Sissons, the Bodmins, South Leeds Golf Course, Middleton Circus as well as on Belle Isle Road where they tore up the Circus (see photo). A lot of work has gone on in the local community over many months with the public providing information to Councillors and the Police. This information has been acted on and a number of Motorbikes and Quad Bikes have been seized, however they often get replaced
quickly. One problem is that the Police have a no-pursue policy. Whilst this stops highspeed chases through built up areas with the associated risk of accidents, it gives irresponsible riders a green light to continue their antisocial activities. Cllr Kim Groves told to South Leeds Life that she was seeking meetings with Councillor Deborah Coupar, Executive Member for Communities; Chief Superintendent Paul Money; and Mark Burns-Williamson (the West Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner) to find out what other resources and measures can be put in place to combat this unacceptable behaviour.
“We need firmer measures and maybe South Leeds residents can lead this movement of change as it’s not just our community that is experiencing this problem” she said. “I want to publicly thank the community for names and locations provided and encourage them to continue. Intelligence is currently being worked on by the Leeds South Policing Team with hopefully planned action will follow” added Cllr Groves. If you witness people riding motorbikes or quad bikes acting in an anti-social manner, or you have information about who is riding them or where they are being stored please

contact the Leeds South Policing Team. You can report online, or call 101. Alternatively you can report anonymously by ringing Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Whilst most quad bikes are not designed to be driven on the road, some are. However like any other road vehicle they must be registered, taxed and insured and display number plates to the front and rear. It is not a legal requirement to wear a crash helmet whilst riding a quad bike, but it is highly recommended. Bikes can only be ridden on private or council owned land with the landowners permission.
