Leeds City Council have offered to take 200 Syrian refugees through the official government programme. With some scepticism being expressed in the community, Beeston & Holbeck Councillor Adam Ogilvie took to Facebook to explain the plans. “We are still awaiting details from the government however the additional costs associated in welcoming additional refugees to Leeds will be met through a specific grant by the government. We would estimate the 200 people would equate to approximately 40 households (or

families) who will be from the camps in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. The visa’s received by the refugees allows them to work, and there will be support to support their assimilation into the Leeds Community. “The families will not be concentrated in any one community, and they will be housed in a mixture of suitable private and public sector housing. This will not impact significantly on the number of council properties available to let. We have also received a wide range of residents, groups, businesses and organisations various offers of support to any refugees

arriving from Syria arriving in Leeds, and all these will also be factored into the support that can be provided. “As we have said this is the right thing to do and we do hope that residents in Beeston and Holbeck will support this approach.” Opinion was divided on the South Leeds Life Facebook page. Daniel Stone said “It’s hard enough getting a doctors appointment as it is.” But Tasneem Miraf said: “We need to get out of our own selfish worlds and look at the bigger picture. People are dying in the world.” Turn to page 2 for Hilary Benn MP’s comments.
