BREAKTHROUGH

TUNNELS Southland Holdings team built the first segment tunnel in North America in 1976 known

as Thunder Bay located in Ontario, Canada. We also completed the first TBM tunnel excavation in the Hawaiian Islands History with the Kaneohe | Kailua Tunnel in Honolulu, Hawaii. TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) excavation has gained increasing importance.

Our daily lives would be impossible without the many benefits of tunneling.

Modern tunneling technology is used as an alternative to “drilling and blasting” through rock or “conventional mechanical excavation” in soft ground. With the rapid growth of underground construction, Southland Holdings is a National Leader in Rapid Tunnel Technology. We have completed more than 1 million linear feet in tunnel projects in the last 40 years.

Factors such as soil conditions, groundwater conditions, length, diameter and depth of the tunnel are assessed by our tunneling team of experts. We skillfully perform cut-andcover, bored tunnel, drilling and blasting techniques for both transit and utility tunnels.

NEW IRVINGTON TUNNEL San Francisco, California “It was a real team effort as well as having multiple tools in the tool box to use to excavate and deal with the highly variable ground and groundwater that was encountered,” said Daniel McMaster.

The new tunnel was excavated using roadheader and drill-and-blast methods.

From drinking water to wastewater, Southland Holdings has the expertise in high-risk construction of Heavy Civil and Industrial wastewater treatment plants, water treatment plants, intake structures, pump stations, site development, municipal water, sewer, storage utilities, parks and recreation and transmission systems.

Water is a renewable resource as it gets purified through evaporation and rain; however, only about 3% of the earth’s water is potable. Although nature slowly cleans wastewater over time, the main benefit of wastewater treatment is maintaining clean water for reuse. We at Southland Holdings continue to be environmentally conscious and our focus is building the best method to deliver clean water with each of our projects.

With our experience, extensive workforce and performance capability, we assure projects are on time and on budget.
