Mission
SouthLake Christian Academy exists for the sake of God’s glory and mission; proclaiming the gospel, educating and discipling the whole person in all aspects of God’s reality.
Vision
That Christ may be preeminent in all things (Colossians 1:18).
Purpose
Our purpose as a JK-12 private Christian school is to provide a Christ-centered, college-preparatory education that nurtures students academically, spiritually, and personally. We are dedicated to helping each child discover their God-given gifts, develop strong character, and grow in faith, preparing them to serve and lead with integrity in their communities and beyond.
To take into consideration the knowledge, opinions, and skills of others as people created in the image of God.
INTEGRITY
To be honest and take responsibility for our decisions every day.
To receive and respond to others with cheerful goodness.
To have an internal gladness dependent on who Jesus is rather than what is happening around us.
SouthLake Christian Academy was born from a desire to place Christ at the center of education. After attending a public school Christmas event where Jesus was noticeably absent, Debbie Hix felt called to establish a faith-based school that honored Christ in every aspect of learning. With determination and prayer, Debbie and her late husband Stephen launched the vision for a Christian school that would serve families in the Lake Norman area.
Founded in 1994 with 23 students, 3 teachers, and Debbie as a volunteer principal, SouthLake Christian began in borrowed space at First Baptist Church in Huntersville. The early years were marked by humble resources, strong faith, and a growing commitment from local families. As enrollment expanded rapidly, temporary classrooms were brought in, and parents camped out to secure kindergarten spots - demonstrating the deep demand for Christ-centered education.
The school’s development accelerated through the late 1990’s and early 2000’s with the addition of new grade levels, programs, and facilities. Highlights included the construction of the Wilcox Center, expansion of athletics (including the launch of football, volleyball, and cheerleading), and the formation of a strong Parent-Teacher Fellowship that supported growth through fundraising and community events.
By 2003, SouthLake Christian graduated its first senior class and continued to add facilities, transportation, and academic programs. The school’s commitment to missions extended from local community outreach projects to international work in Peru. Athletics also flourished, culminating in SouthLake Christian’s first state title in volleyball in 2010 and an 85% student participation rate in sports.
Today, SouthLake Christian Academy stands as a thriving JK–12 institution, deeply rooted in its founding mission to educate students in mind, body, and spirit. While teaching methods have evolved with the times, the school remains steadfast in its commitment to biblical truth, academic excellence, and Christ-centered leadership.

SouthLake Christian’s population draws from seven (7) counties, and our main concern is student safety. School administrators monitor weather and road conditions as well as the closure decisions of local schools. SouthLake Christian, however, will make its own decisions regarding schedule adjustments for inclement weather. If inclement weather, local flooding, or a weather-related power outage forces a closing or delay of school, this decision will be announced via the SouthLake Christian text alert system, email, social media, and the school’s website.
The primary criteria considered when making a decision include:
1. The safety and well-being of students and staff
2. The severity of the weather
3. Timing of the weather
4. The road conditions being suitable for buses and cars to travel safely
Since road conditions vary by location, parents are encouraged and empowered to make the safety decisions they believe are best for their family.

Campus visitors should park in a designated visitor’s parking space. Numbered parking spaces are for staff and students only. All visitors, including parents, must check in to the building they are visiting before they proceed to a classroom, common area, or volunteer assignment and wear a visitor’s badge during their time on campus. Due to safety issues, parents are not allowed to park in the car line to pick up their children. If parents must come inside a school building, they must park in a visitor’s parking space, not in the driveways.
SouthLake Christian’s annual fund is a vital initiative designed to support and enhance every aspect of the school’s mission and vision. The fund’s primary purpose is to provide flexible, unrestricted resources that allow the school to address immediate needs and seize new opportunities—whether that means improving classroom technology, expanding student programs, or investing in professional development for teachers. The annual fund aligns with SouthLake Christian vision to create an environment that engages and nurtures learners and its mission to ensure all students reach their full potential through diverse learning opportunities.

UNLEASH YOUR ARTISTIC POTENTIAL AND DEEPEN YOUR FAITH WITH SOUTHLAKE CHRISTIAN’S FINE ARTS PROGRAM!
SouthLake Christian’s Fine Arts Program is a beacon of light for young artists. It offers a rare blend of artistic excellence and spiritual depth, making it an ideal place for students who want to pursue their passion for the arts while growing in their faith. This program is not just about creating great artists; it’s about shaping the hearts and minds of young people to make a meaningful impact in the world through their creativity.
We motivate our students to actively participate in the arts, fostering their creative talents and enhancing their appreciation for drama, music, graphic design, and visual arts. Whether they are mastering the intricate art of photography or embodying a character on stage, our students discover various avenues to express their artistic abilities.
Art and music are integral parts of our curriculum starting from junior kindergarten and continuing through eighth grade. Students attend both art and music classes weekly and showcase their talents in Christmas and year-end performances.
In upper school, students have the option to select from an array of Fine Arts electives to fulfill their graduation requirements. They also have opportunities to participate in the annual drama production, choir, orchestra, concert band, and competitions. Our annual high school drama production features a well-known musical theater show performed by an all-student cast and crew of 7th through 12th graders.

SouthLake Christian Academy offers middle and high school students the opportunity to compete in 14 different sports on 40 competitive teams. Student-athletes can participate in a diverse lineup of sports at the middle and high school level. Our teams have enjoyed success by winning 5 team state championships (NCISAA) and 20 individual state championships in baseball, cross country, football, swimming, volleyball and wrestling.
SouthLake Christian students are known as strong competitors; whether they are first-time participants who are learning new skills in one of our 14 different programs on the middle/upper school level or seasoned players who are aiming to win a state championship for one of our ten varsity teams.
At SouthLake Christian, we view athletics as a unique opportunity to teach selfdiscipline, teamwork, obedience, compassion and Christ-like character on the field of competition. The athletic program seeks to develop these spiritual characteristics while also training the physical body in a competitive environment. Our foremost desire is to glorify God and share Christ in the way we compete on the field.
We provide opportunities for all students to participate, and this openness is one reason athletics is a core component of SouthLake Christian culture. In a typical academic year, 80% of middle school students and 75% of upper school students participate in at least one sport. This allows the students to obtain the Physical Education credit required for graduation.

At SouthLake Christian Academy, experiential learning trips are a vibrant extension of our academic mission, offering students the invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultures and histories of countries around the world. These thoughtfully designed journeys take learning beyond the classroom, allowing students to explore new places, engage with local communities, and gain firsthand insights into global customs, beliefs, art, and social issues.
Recent trips have included destinations such as Scotland and Ireland, where students walk the storied streets of Edinburgh and Dublin, discovering ancient Celtic and Gaelic heritage. In Costa Rica and Panama, students practiced Spanish while experiencing the “Pura Vida” lifestyle and connecting with local residents. Other adventures have taken our students to Puerto Rico for service and outreach, Washington, D.C. for a deep dive into American history, and even to the Mediterranean coast, Iceland, Israel, and Peru for a broad exploration of world cultures and histories.
Each trip is intentionally crafted to foster curiosity, cultural appreciation, and personal growth, ensuring that SouthLake students return home with a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it.
Missions Week is a cornerstone of SouthLake Christian Academy’s commitment to shaping compassionate servant leaders. Each spring, our entire school community unites for a week dedicated to exploring, celebrating, and participating in mission work both locally and around the globe. Through inspiring chapel services, hands-on service projects, and engaging classroom activities, students of all ages learn about the impact of Christian outreach and discover how they can make a difference in the world.
From supporting local projects like Caterpillar Ministries and food drives, to raising awareness for international causes and participating in the Parade of Nations, Missions Week offers students meaningful opportunities to serve others in the name of Christ. Our older students even connect directly with mission partners and hear firsthand stories from those who have served, deepening their understanding of global needs and the joy of selfless service. Missions Week is more than an event—it’s a living expression of SouthLake’s mission to educate students in faith, character, and service, preparing them to be agents of change in their communities and beyond.
Learn and Serve Week is a signature experience at SouthLake Christian Academy, reflecting our dedication to hands-on learning and meaningful service opportunities locally and globally. During this special week, upper school students leave the traditional classroom behind to participate in carefully chosen learning and service projects that address real-world concerns. These immersive activities are designed to deepen students’ understanding of societal challenges, foster empathy, and inspire a lifelong commitment to service.
Our freshmen begin their journey joining a small group of their peers with faculty leaders that take them off campus to various missional partners for service opportunities over the course of three (3) days.
Our sophomores work alongside local organizations, aiding in relief efforts for Hurricane Helene victims, making a tangible impact. Students not only enrich their academic journey but also develop a strong sense of civic responsibility and compassion for others.
A highlight of Learn and Serve Week is the junior class trip to Washington, D.C., where students spend four days exploring our nation’s capital. They tour museums, monuments, and government buildings, deepening their appreciation for American history and civic responsibility while bonding with classmates and teachers. This immersive experience brings history to life and inspires students to become informed, engaged citizens.
For our seniors, Learn and Serve Week culminates in a mission trip to Puerto Rico. Here, students serve local children and families through hands-on ministry, community outreach, and school projects. They distribute food, lead activities at local schools, and participate in construction and painting projects, all while practicing their Spanish and learning about Puerto Rican culture. These experiences not only foster spiritual growth and compassion but also provide seniors with a meaningful opportunity to live out their faith and make a lasting impact in another part of the world.
Student Mission Fellowship (SMF) is one of SouthLake Christian Academy’s most dynamic student organizations, dedicated to teaching students the joy of selflessly serving others in the name of Jesus Christ. Open to upper school students, SMF meets weekly for fellowship, Bible study, and planning impactful service projects that benefit both local and global communities.
Through partnerships with organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Caterpillar Ministries, and Access 2 Success (A2S), SMF members participate in initiatives like Operation Christmas Child, Hoops for Hope, Happy Birthday Jesus Gift Bags, Giving Tree Fundraisers, and food drives. The group also raises awareness and support for international causes, including relief for persecuted Christians in Northern Iraq and Haitian families affected by natural disasters.
Beyond service, SMF fosters spiritual growth and leadership, requiring members to volunteer a minimum of five hours per semester and encouraging them to live out the Great Commandments and Great Commission in daily life. Through these experiences, students develop compassion, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of their faith, making a meaningful difference in the world around them.
Lower School Staff

Please refer to the parent-student handbook for division-specific dress code information.
A student who has been absent from any class more than the allotted number of absences may not receive credit for taking the class and be placed on probation to address the excessive absenteeism. If excessive absenteeism continues, the student’s enrollment may be terminated by the administration.
Students will be assigned cubbies or lockers for personal storage, which must be kept clean and may be decorated inside following school guidelines (no stickers or obstructions). Book bags must fit inside and are not permitted in classrooms. Lockers may be searched by the school at any time.
The lower school partners with Bright School Kits to make purchasing summer supplies easy. If you miss the deadline for purchasing through Bright Kids, you may access a list of school supplies via our website or online portal (Renweb).
Our lower school students benefit from the Deep Roots curriculum, complementing our weekly chapel services. This program enhances their understanding of spiritual lessons, laying a strong foundation in Biblical knowledge and Christian character for a lifetime of faith and service. In addition to Deep Roots, we also use The Gospel Project chapel curriculum, further enriching students spiritual education and fostering a deeper connection with Biblical teachings.
In addition to core academic subjects, our lower school students enjoy a vibrant selection of weekly specials that nurture creativity, physical fitness, and a love of learning. From junior kindergarten through 4th grade, children participate in engaging programs such as music, art, STEM, physical education, and library. These enriching experiences inspire curiosity and help every child discover new interests and talents.
Lower School students utilize tablets and laptops for practical education, learning exercises, and web-based discovery. Early digital exposure cultivates essential computer abilities, such as keyboarding, web browsing, and online safety knowledge. Our media specialist delivers weekly technology lessons in 1st-4th grade classes, instructing students on effective and responsible use of digital resources.
Students have many opportunities throughout the school year to break from standard dress code attire and show their school spirit and creativity! Homecoming, Spirit Week, various pajama days, 100th day, stars and stripes, community helper, biography wax museum, and other celebrations allow students to be festive and have fun with their wardrobe.
The after-school program runs Monday–Thursday from first dismissal until 6:00 p.m and Friday until 5:30 p.m. Students receive a snack, homework time on select days, and a safe, fun environment with games, activities, and free play supervised by caring staff. Choose between an hourly rate of $10 per student or a daily rate of $20, with a 10% discount for siblings. Our goal is to provide a warm, home-like atmosphere for every child.
The After the Academics enrichment program is designed to enhance the student experience with a wide range of after-school activities—including arts, academics, sports, and STEM. Sessions run Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m.–5:00 p.m. and are led by faculty and staff passionate about their specialties.
Lower school students in grades JK–4 embark on a variety of exciting day trips throughout the year. Destinations include the Catawba Science Center, where hands-on exhibits bring science to life; local pumpkin patches for seasonal fun and farm experiences; professional performances at the Children’s Theatre; and educational adventures in Raleigh. These trips are thoughtfully chosen to enrich classroom learning, spark curiosity, and create lasting memories for our students.
Middle School Staff
Middle School Interim Principal: Nathan Simpson (nsimpson@southlakechristian.org)
Middle School Dean: Kristin Vance (kvance@southlakechristian.org)
Administrative Assistant: Darian Houser (dhouser@southlakechristian.org)
Please refer to the parent-student handbook for division-specific dress code information.
A student who has been absent from any class more than the allotted number of absences may not receive credit for taking the class and be placed on probation to address the excessive absenteeism. If excessive absenteeism continues, the student’s enrollment may be terminated by the administration.
Parents should notify the MS Administrative assistant as soon as possible when they know that their child will be absent, tardy, or need to be dismissed early. Please make every effort to avoid early dismissals after 2:25 p.m. as they interfere with
carline and present safety issues. Students are tardy to school if they are not in their first scheduled class when the bell rings. If students are tardy to school, they must first come to the office, sign in and receive a tardy slip before going to class. Tardies will be excused only when the cause for the tardy was illness, doctor’s appointment, or at the discretion of school administrators. Consequences for excessive tardies vary by division. Students with excessive tardies will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, and additional consequences may be assigned at the discretion of the administration. A student’s tardy count resets each quarter for middle school students. Students arriving for a class period more than halfway through that period will be considered absent. Students arriving at school past the halfway point of the day will be considered absent for the day.
Students are issued lockers (and may request locks) for personal use; only schoolissued locks are allowed. If a lock is lost, a replacement fee will be charged. Students may only use their assigned lockers and are responsible for all contents. Lockers may be decorated inside according to school policy—no stickers or decorations that block access. The school reserves the right to search any locker at any time.
Please check the parent resource hub on our website and Renweb for information on school supplies.
Cell phones should be silenced or powered off during school hours. Students may use their cell phones before school, after school, or at times as specified by a teacher. Videos, photographs, and audio recordings are not permitted during the school day. Students are not permitted to post to social media during school hours. Students are not allowed to use smart watches on campus during school hours.
As part of our educational program, students participate in weekly chapel services, scripture readings, prayer sessions, and Bible classes. These practices provide students with regular opportunities for reflection, prayer, and connection with their faith, encouraging them to explore and understand their spiritual beliefs as they grow.
Middle school advisories offer students a weekly space for personal growth and community connection. During these meetings, students reflect on their faith, discuss academic and personal/social concerns, set goals, and build relationships with peers and advisors. These gatherings are designed to help students successfully navigate the middle school experience academically, spiritually, and socially.
Technology classes focus on teaching students essential digital skills and responsible online behavior. Students learn about internet safety, digital footprints, cyberbullying, and ethical use of technology.
Our middle school is thoughtfully divided into two distinct groups: Intermediate School (5th & 6th) and Junior High School (7th & 8th) to better address the developmental and educational needs of our students. Subjects include English, social studies, mathematics, science, Spanish, computer science, the arts, and physical education.
Biblical principles are integrated into our curriculum in each subject area. Additionally, we utilize the Deep Roots curriculum in Bible classes. Students explore the Old and New Testaments, learning about the historical context, key figures, and

Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for division-specific dress code information.
A student who has been absent from any class more than the allotted number of absences may not receive credit for taking the class and be placed on probation to address the excessive absenteeism. SouthLake Christian Academy upper school students are allowed six (6) absences in classes meeting daily and three (3) absences in classes meeting rotationally per semester. Other divisions’ attendance policies may vary. If excessive absenteeism is unresolved, the student’s enrollment may be terminated by the administration.
Students are tardy to school if they are not in their first scheduled class when the bell rings. A student’s tardy count resets each semester for upper school students. Students arriving for a class period more than halfway through that period will be considered absent. Students arriving at school past the halfway point of the day will be considered absent for the day. If students are tardy to school, they must first come to the office, sign in with their student ID and receive a tardy slip before going to class.
Students who drive to school must have a valid driver’s license, a signed parking permit application on file, and be in good disciplinary standing. Students in grade 11-12 will have been assigned parking spots prior to the upcoming school year.
Students who can drive are expected to do so carefully, respectfully, and legally and obey the guidelines set forth by the school. Speeding or hazardous driving, inappropriate parking, use of cellphones, or playing music too loudly while driving on campus will result in a warning and possible loss of driving privileges, depending on level of violation. Campus security and upper school administration will attend to driving and parking violations, which may result in students losing their parking privileges on campus.
Students must always carry their ID’s with them. Student ID’s are used for accessing doors and for signing in/out process. In the event that the student loses their ID, they can contact the Technology team. There is a replacement cost for a lost school ID . If they are a NEW student, one will be issued at no charge.
Seniors are allowed to leave campus for lunch on Wednesdays; however, they are required to scan in and out at the front office each time they leave and return to campus. They must return for their advisory block or they will lose senior privileges. Only seniors have off campus privileges for A and D block study halls as schedules permit.
Please check the parent resource hub on our website and Renweb for information on summer assignments. Students are required to complete summer assignments for their English classes. In addition, most Advanced Placement (AP) courses include summer work that must be completed before the start of the school year. School supplies for each course will be outlined in the class syllabus provided by the teacher.
As part of our educational program, students participate in weekly chapel services, scripture readings, prayer sessions, and religious studies classes. These practices provide students with regular opportunities for reflection, prayer, and connection with their faith, encouraging them to explore and understand their spiritual beliefs as they grow.
The Senior-Kindergarten Buddy program includes meetups for various events throughout the year. In between these scheduled visits, buddies will give high fives, hugs, and shout outs as they pass each other on SouthLake Christian’s campus, providing a positive boost to their day. One of the many perks of attending a JK-12 school is the community-like atmosphere that provides student interactions at all levels. Younger kids get to witness the older kids in sports, arts, and academics— aspiring to be like them someday—while the older students engage with their lower school counterparts and serve as role models.
SouthLake Christian’s Wednesday advisories offer students a weekly space for personal growth and community connection. During these sessions, students reflect on their faith, discuss academic progress, set goals, and build relationships with peers and advisors. These gatherings are designed to nurture mind, spirit, and social wellbeing throughout the school year.
Each student receives a Macbook for their entire high school journey and must bring a computer to campus daily for academic use. Laptops are used throughout the curriculum for research projects, writing, working on complex math problems, design, media arts, modern language acquisition, and collaboration in a wide variety of ways. Students are expected to check their school-provided email account (firstname.lastname@southlakechristian. net) regularly throughout the day for the most up-to-date information.

Students can take advantage of summer online courses to earn additional academic credits. Upper school electives include classes such Cybersecurity, Forensics, Intro to Engineering, Intro to World Religions, and Money Management. Biblical principles are integrated into our Bible curriculum. Students explore the Old and New Testaments, learning about the historical context, key figures, and moral lessons. Through discussions, projects, and memorization of verses, students develop a strong spiritual foundation and a personal connection to their faith.
Upper school students may have a study hall built into their daily schedule, depending on their course load.
A minimum of six (6) tests/major assessments are given per semester in all course levels. Exceptions may apply to AP level courses.
Students will take semester exams at the end of the first and second semesters. The comprehensive exams will be ninety minutes in length. These exams are given during the last week of the semester and are completed within the exam schedule. They are calculated as 20% of the semester grade. Seniors will be exempt from semester exams if they have an average of 90% or higher for the semester and have fewer than six (6) absences in the class. This exemption policy does not apply to seniors enrolled in AP courses; they will be required to take a Fall semester exam and the national AP Exams scheduled in May.
Junior Marshal is a SouthLake Christian academic and service honor; those ten (10) individuals selected are the guides for senior graduation activities and the graduation ceremony. Any junior who has attended the Academy for five high school semesters, has earned a weighted GPA of at least 3.75, and is available to participate in all graduation activities is encouraged to apply.
SouthLake Christian does not rank its students for the purpose of college admissions but does recognize a Valedictorian and a Salutatorian as part of graduation ceremonies. Any senior earning an Honors Diploma who has attended the Academy for six (6) consecutive semesters through senior year is eligible to earn these honors.
Students meeting requirements will follow an appropriate academic flow and are able to move from College Prep courses to Honors courses or from Honors courses to AP courses. Students are unable to move from College Prep courses to AP courses without permission from administration. Course pre-requisites, teacher recommendations, and PSAT, SAT scores will be used to determine students’ class placement as outlined in course descriptions. School administration is the final authority in student class placement.
Upper School students have a limited time determined by the administration to drop or add a course following the beginning of the semester. Any withdrawals from a course must be completed before the class is 50% complete. They will be recorded as “Withdrawn Passing (WP)” or “Withdrawn Failing (WF).”
For SouthLake Christian Academy’s high school students, the annual Windy Gap Retreat is a cherished tradition and a highlight of the school year. Each fall, students in grades 9–12 travel to Windy Gap, a Young Life-owned retreat center nestled in the North Carolina mountains, for three days and two nights of spiritual renewal, fellowship, and adventure. The retreat features dynamic chapel sessions each morning and evening, where students are encouraged to deepen their faith and reflect on their personal walk with Christ.
Afternoons at Windy Gap are filled with friendly class competitions, team-building activities, and ample free time to enjoy the stunning mountain scenery and recreational amenities. Whether students are participating in tug-of-war, hiking, or simply relaxing with friends, the retreat offers countless opportunities to build meaningful relationships and lasting memories.
Upper school students consistently describe Windy Gap as a transformative experience that strengthens class unity and fosters unexpected, lifelong bonds. Many alumni recall the retreat as a pivotal moment in their high school journey, where they grew closer to their peers, connected with teachers outside the classroom, and experienced a supportive, Christ-centered community.
The Windy Gap Retreat is more than just a getaway—it’s a foundational experience that shapes students’ spiritual lives, encourages authentic friendships, and sets a positive tone for the rest of the school year.
