The subjects you choose to do now will shape what career options will be open to you and the skills and experiences you gain will play an enormous role in helping you take full advantage of opportunities in the future.

The quality of teaching and learning measurement used for sixth form colleges has put the performance of all of our students in the top 10% nationally for two of the last three years and is a testament to all of the hard work put in by staff and students alike.

We have again been blown away by the achievement of our Sixth Form Students who have performed so well and made great progress from their GCSE results. This year group was the first to sit all exams at the end of their second year of A levels and we couldn’t be more proud of the dedication they have shown to their studies across both years.

Students performed brilliantly across the board with 13% of students attaining all A* - A grades, on par with last years results and 33% gaining at least 1 A* - A grade. 41% of grades were at A* - B and 73% of students achieved A* - C grades. We also saw some exceptional performances in subject areas including Cambridge Technical Art (100% A* - A), French (50% A* A) English Language (35% A* - A) and German (100% A* - A).

We are always delighted to see students achieve such brilliant results in subjects they are really passionate about, whether it be Economics or Languages. As in the past, the principal destination of our Year 13 students was Higher Education with a high percentage of students applying through UCAS to continue their education to degree level and beyond.

This brilliant set of results meant that 74% were able to secure their first choice placement and a further 11% gaining a place at their second choice of university. We have also seen a number of students secure an apprenticeship placement both locally and nationally covering a variety of careers, including one student who has secured a degree level apprenticeship with BAE (British Aerospace) to study Aeronautical Engineering.

NUS Extra Card Don’t forget as a South Hunsley Sixth Form student you can also apply for an NUS Extra Card. You’ll be sure to get money off at your favourite stores with participating companies including Amazon, New Look, Pizza Express and Odeon plus many other online and high street stores.

Student Union South Hunsley’s Student Union is run by students, for students. The Student Union sets the student calendar for the sixth form and organises all the main student events including the Year 13 Prom and fun charity activities such as the Christmas Fayre.

On a more serious note, the Student Union also elects representatives to communicate the students’ view to the senior leaders so students’ opinions are heard and considered when we are looking at ways to improve your sixth form experience.

Facilities Our Sixth Form Centre is open throughout the school day and offers our sixth formers their own café, Learning Resource Centre and social spaces for Year 12 and 13. There is also free Wi-Fi access so you can bring your laptop or device in and connect to the internet anywhere. Our sixth form students have access to dedicated subject facilities such as our Media Music Suite and post 16 Art Studio as well as use of the Sports Centre facilities. One thing’s for certain, you can be sure that you’ll have all the resources you need to help you excel in your studies.

Clubs and Societies We have a number of clubs and societies for you to join which will help you gain new skills, meet different people and simply have fun.

Whatever your interests there is something for you and if you can’t find what you are looking for, why not set up your own club? That’s exactly how the debating society was formed and is a perfect example of what can be achieved when a group of students share an interest and want to pursue it further.

Educational Visits Trips and visits will also play a big part in your sixth form learning and no matter what courses you study, you are sure to find yourself somewhere exciting to help you gain as much as you can from your chosen subjects. Trips to New York, Germany and Poland are all included in our sixth form calendar plus there are also plenty of theatre trips, art exhibitions and university visits for you to take part in. These often link to your studies, but also allow you to broaden your horizons and share new experiences with your friends.

m r o F h t x i S t r o Sp At South Hunsley Sixth Form, you can exercise your body as well as your brain. South Hunsley Sports is perfectly located if you fancy a work out in the gym.

South Hunsley has a strong sporting tradition which continues into the sixth form. You can join one of our teams and represent South Hunsley on a local, regional and national level. We currently have football, rugby and girls’ football teams and, as always, the option to set up your own is there.

Our Sport Leadership Academy is designed to offer you a pathway into sport. You can develop your leadership skills and achieve a nationally recognised qualification by taking either our Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) or the Higher Sports Leaders Award (HSLA).

The PE Department will work with you to give you access to the sport volunteering hours you need either at South Hunsley School or through the links they’ve established with our local primary schools.

You could also find yourself as a Sports Captain for the college and in your final year of sixth form become a member of the PE Department as a Young Ambassador for PE. This will see you attend conferences and give you the opportunity to champion and promote school sport to other students.

Personal Tutor

As a sixth form student you will have access to a range of financial support depending on your circumstances.

At the beginning of Year 12 you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who will offer one-to-one academic mentoring and pastoral support to ensure your time at South Hunsley Sixth Form is happy and successful.

All students can receive subsidised bus travel, ensuring a single journey to our sixth form will cost you no more than 75p. To take advantage of these rates you need to buy either a bus pass or bus vouchers from our finance office. You might also qualify for a bursary, which helps those most in need with travel and equipment costs, or you could also apply for one-off support payments.

Academic Mentoring As a further level of support, some students will be assigned an academic mentor. The academic mentor will work with students, alongside teachers and tutors, to help them make the best transition into sixth form and make good progress.

Everything we do in our sixth form is to help you stand out from the crowd and shine in your chosen field. We are here to listen, advise and support you in your choices and there’s always someone available to discuss the options available to you.

Your tutor will be available to discuss your progress and assessments in order to set you challenging but achievable targets, and will help ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your future.

Higher Education Skills Development Our sixth form students receive help and guidance right from the start of Year 12 to help them achieve their university ambitions.

We work in partnership with a number of universities, such as Hull, Oxford and Cambridge, in order to provide a range of university experiences and support programmes.

Advice and Guidance You will have access to professional advice and guidance throughout your time in the sixth form.

UCAS Support Your UCAS application is our priority.

We have highly experienced members of staff who successfully guide students through the UCAS process every year.

Your Personal Tutor will work with you throughout your time at sixth form to make sure you’re taking advantage of all that is on offer to support your application and help ensure you gain a place at your chosen university at the end of your course. All our staff will work hard and support you to make sure you have the best chance of getting where you want to be in life.

Oxbridge

HE+ Programme

If you are aiming for a place at Oxford or Cambridge you will be invited to join our Early Applicant Scheme as you’ll need to make an application to UCAS earlier than most other students. Also, as places at Oxford and Cambridge are highly competitive, you’ll need to start evidencing your skills and wider passion for your subject area from the moment you start in sixth form.

If your goal after sixth form is to secure a place on a Russell Group University or join a highly competitive degree course, you’ll be interested in the HE+ Programme.

We offer you additional support and give you the chance to visit Oxford and Cambridge universities to make sure you can fully prepare your application and perfect your interview technique well before the deadline for submissions in the October of Year 13.

Thanks to the success of this scheme, we see students head off every year to these very competitive courses and institutions.

HE+ is run in conjunction with Cambridge University and supports students in preparing strong applications to competitive universities.

You’ll attend HE+ events where you have guidance in how to develop your subject knowledge and interests beyond the A Level syllabus, and some students also have the opportunity to attend a residential visit to Kings College Cambridge.

Sarah Conkerton Russell Group Many of our students have ambitions to access a HE course at one of the 24 leading UK universities that make up the Russell Group.

In 2019, over 21% of our students progressed onto Russell Group universities.

If you are aiming to access a place at a Russell Group university you will be invited to join our HE+ initiative in Year 12. This is run throughout Year 12 by the University of Cambridge and its colleges with South Hunsley Sixth Form to help you feel more confident and well prepared when applying to higher education in Year 13.

In the past we have seen our students head off to work in fields such as accountancy, marketing, engineering, youth support, the armed forces, health care and hair and beauty to name just a few.

Become a Leader

Earn while you learn

Developing leadership and having the ability to work in a team are essential for your future employability and our Student Union offers you the opportunity to build up these skills in a number of ways.

Whilst studying with us you can also find part time work that fits nicely around your studies.

Every year, sixth form students are elected to roles in the Student Union and you could choose to run as Head Boy or Head Girl, become a Sixth Form House Leader or join a Student Union committee.

Becoming a leader in your Student Union or participating in one of the many committees is a great way to contribute to sixth form life plus it will look good on your CV or UCAS application and your employability passport. There are also plenty of other ways for you to get involved with student life and play an important role in your House by supporting charity fundraising events. You might find yourself organising a bake sale for your house charity or collecting donations for Children in Need.

Improve your employability You will already know that in the sixth form you are not in lessons all day every day. We offer a huge range of activities that you can get involved in outside of lessons that are aimed at developing your employability skills.

Being linked so closely to South Hunsley Secondary School presents lots of opportunities for you to help out teachers and younger students. In any course you study you can help Year 7 students in that subject, acting as a Teaching Assistant or general classroom support.

Alternatively, you could choose to be a Student Ambassador and play an active role in promoting our sixth form, sharing your knowledge and experiences with school students at our Open Events as well as being an advocate for the sixth form at other important events. Either way, you are building up a great set of skills to add to your CV or UCAS application.

We employ over 70 sixth form students in various roles throughout the school and sports centre.

You could become a Lunchtime Supervisor in the library and dining halls. If sports and fitness is more your thing then head over to South Hunsley Sports where you could gain extra qualifications and then find employment at the centre.

Whichever job you choose it will provide you with work skills and experience which will stay with you beyond college and help boost any university or job application.

p u y k r t n Li indus s l h t a i w ession f o r p Industry Mentoring Schemes Teaching Employer-Led Programme A very exciting opportunity is launching in November 2019 for those who are thinking about a career in teaching or working with young people in the future.

The Teaching Employer-Led Programme will be the first to launch in this region and will allow students in our sixth form to find out about the profession and create one of the most stand-out teaching CVs and job applications in the country.

Those who join the programme will be given the opportunity to complete in-school placements, attend masterclasses on outstanding teaching skills development, create resources for our charity school in Kenya to support and enhance teaching there and be mentored by a range of qualified and experienced teachers and leaders.

This combination of experience, skills development and project work with our charity school will certainly create a CV and job application like no other whilst also supporting our drive to help other schools overseas to improve their own teaching standards and the limitless potential of their students.

One of the main ways you can connect with businesses is through our Industry Mentoring Scheme. We will help you gain invaluable skills, knowledge and experience by assigning you an Industry Mentor who will support you with your academic studies and plans for the future.

Your mentor will offer first hand advice and guidance on interview technique, university and job applications, and can help you develop more day to day skills such as time management and organisation.

This scheme has opened up many doors for our ambitious and driven students and helped give them the best possible preparation for the world of work. Thanks to this scheme, some businesses actively recruit our sixth formers to work for them after A Levels. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself on a work experience placement or even secure your first job!

Career Workshops Industry professionals regularly visit our sixth form to deliver workshops about careers in their sector. This allows you to gain first hand knowledge, advice and guidance from a practitioner working in your chosen industry and, of course, could help you build links that will be invaluable in the future!

This is a demanding programme of study that has been developed in consultation with employers and offers student’s work-related opportunities that are not available in many other Sixth Form Colleges.

The programme will equip you with key employability skills and give you access to an industry placement.

If you are aiming for a high profile career, whether via a graduate or an apprenticeship route, this programme would be ideal to help you develop business contacts in your chosen career sector. You will finish your two years of study with a stronger application and a better understanding of industry.

Top tip: Entry to our Employer Led Programme will be via application form and interview with local employers. Employers will be looking for those students who are hardworking, reliable and committed.

Impact There are currently 65 local partners involved in our Employer Led Programme and more will be joining us throughout the next academic year.

The programme has featured in The Parliamentary Review, won The National Apprenticeship Award and was showcased in front of Her Majesty The Queen. However, the greatest achievements are from those students who have already completed the programme; the college has seen record numbers of successful applications for Higher Level Apprenticeships and some of our strongest personal statements for university courses.

The fare for a single journey to our sixth form is only 75p whether you are travelling from one of the nearby villages or the surrounding areas.

We run a number of bus routes across East Riding and we heavily subsidise sixth form transport to make your journey affordable.

m r o F h s t e x i m S m a r g Pro In line with other colleges and sixth forms nationally most students choosing to study at South Hunsley Sixth Form will choose three A Level / Level 3 equivalents.

If students wish to be considered for four A Levels, they will need to have achieved at least grade 5 in English and Maths, at least 7 GCSE results at a grade 7 or higher and have an average GCSE point score of at least 7.

They will not sit external AS Level examinations as these will not count towards the final A Level grade under the new A Level framework.

Students will sit formal mock examinations at the end of Year 12 to allow progress to be measured prior to application being made to university courses.

Alongside their A Level choices they will be expected to participate fully in an enrichment curriculum that offers them a chance to build a competitive portfolio for employment, apprenticeships and university applications.

Apprenticeship and Employment We realise that employers are now seeking technical experience and employability skills for their future job roles so it is crucial that we are able to deliver a programme that meets these changing labour market requirements.

This programme is designed to help those students who do not want to go to university develop the key employability skills needed to succeed by increasing their engagement with local employers. Students on this pathway will benefit from industry mentoring, specialist apprenticeship careers guidance, employer networking opportunities , master classes and workshops and trips in order to help reach their career goals, boost their CV’s and create a stand out application.

Enrichment / Additional Studies There are a number of additional qualifications which students can choose to study alongside their 3 main subjects. The Extended Project Qualification gives students the opportunity to research and complete a university style dissertation on a topic of their own choosing.

This challenging qualification is highly rated by universities, who appreciate the independent study skills developed by those who complete it.

Core Maths is an AS equivalent qualification completed over 2 years, which gives students the opportunity to continue to develop their GCSE Maths skills. A new addition for this academic year is the Level 3 ECDL. This IT qualification builds on the Level 2 qualification completed by many students and further develops key IT skills for the future. There are also opportunities for students to complete Sports Leaders qualifications.

In addition to these qualifications, all students will be benefit from our Community Contribution scheme. This gives all students the opportunity to contribute to our wider school community, whilst also developing key skills. The scheme is very much driven by student choice, but some typical examples might be supporting in a lower school class, helping with reading registrations or assisting with the coaching of sports teams.

Employer Led Programme The Employer Led Programme is a great pathway for those students who want to strengthen their employability skills whilst also studying on their courses.

HE+ / Early Applicants Each year around 80% of our Year 13 students apply to progress onto Higher Education through UCAS. A number of trips and visits, as well as talks and seminars from our partner institutions throughout Year 12 and Year 13 ensures that students are given the support and information necessary to make a competitive application to a wide range of courses at universities up and down the country.

We are part of HE+, a programme designed for students who are prospective applicants for Oxford or Cambridge universities or for medicine, dentistry or veterinary science courses, or who intend to apply for Russell Group universities.

The programme is designed to enable students to receive specific one-to-one support with their university applications and personal statement and to have access to a range of university and course related activities.

Students will be enrolled on the HE+ programme, which is run by Cambridge University in order to support students applying to any of the Russell Group universities, which are the top research focused universities in the UK and therefore have the most competitive application processes. As part of the HE+ and Early Applicants pathway, students will have the opportunity to attend subject seminars, applications workshops university summer schools and residential visits, including the chance to visit both Oxford and Cambridge universities.

This course will suit you if you would like to develop your own ideas alongside learning lots of skills and techniques. The first year covers a wide range of techniques and themes, the second year gives you the opportunity to specialise in areas that you like the best such as graphics, sculpture and photography.

The course is very suitable for students who want to study a broad based course and who enjoy working independently. This qualification is the equivalent of one A Level and is accepted by universities just like A Levels.

What will I learn?

This course will build the essential skills, techniques, attitudes and understanding needed to work in the world of art and design or to move onto higher education.

You will gain a strong understanding of the fundamentals of art and design techniques, as well as learning about materials, concepts and influences, visual recording and communication.

If you have enjoyed Biology at GCSE and want to study the subject in more depth, then this is the subject for you. You must be willing to work hard and read around the subject from the start of this course and you will need to spend quality time on understanding and learning.

Overall, at least 10% of the marks in assessments will require the use of mathematical skills. These will be the standard of higher tier GCSE mathematics.

There are many reasons why people want to set up businesses – perhaps they want to make money for themselves or their family or they want to contribute something special to the life of their community. Whatever their motivation, common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs are enthusiasm and commitment. If you have these skills, then Business Studies may be the course for you.

What will I learn?

Marketing and people Understand how businesses identify opportunities and develop a competitive advantage through marketing and through the people they employ.

Managing business activities Consider external influences that impact on business, learn about raising and managing finance and measuring business performance as well as the importance of using resources efficiently.

There are many skills that are needed to be successful: calculations, interpreting data, making and presenting arguments, justifying business decisions, identifying problems and proposing solutions. The element of maths is nothing to be afraid of; you will be required to calculate and interpret percentage changes, or calculate how responsive a change in price will be on the level of demand.

The Cambridge Technical Level 3 Introductory Diploma is a two year course. This course is ideal if you have a particular interest in business. Students who wish to pursue Higher Education or careers in business related subjects or vocations are also well suited to the course. There are five units across two years and two exams.

Chemistry helps you to develop your research, problem solving and analytical skills.

It helps you challenge ideas and shows you how to work things out through logic and step-by-step reasoning. If these are skills you want to develop further, if you are competent in maths and know how to work hard, then Chemistry is the right subject for you.

What will I learn?

Chemistry is split into three sections.

Physical, Organic and Inorganic. The topics you will learn within these sections include; Physical: Atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, acids and bases, kinetics, rates, equilibria.

Organic: Alkanes, alkenes, halogenalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, amines, amides, acyl chlorides, spectroscopy amongst others.

Inorganic: Periodicity, group 2, group 7, period 3 and transition metals.

Chemistry is a fascinating science with lots of fun practials. You get to learn the reasons behind chemical reactions which I find so interesting. The teachers do a really good job of making it a fun lesson to come to” Sue

What will I learn?

Computer Systems - Exam You will learn about how a computer uses data. This will involve study into software development, data exchange and representation, algorithms, and the laws of ethics around the use of computers.

Algorithms and Programming - Exam In this unit you will learn what is meant by computational thinking; how computers can be used to solve problems, how programs can be written to solve problems, the use of standard algorithms and their use in describing problems.

Programming Project - Non-exam Assessment In this unit you will learn how to produce a coded computing solution to a real-world problem, including analysis of the problem, design of the solution, development of the solution and evaluation of the finished project.

You will need to be able to research, revise and express your ideas in exam conditions and be dedicated to independent reading and learning. You will need to be flexible in your approach to the course, and committed to meeting rehearsal schedules.

What will I learn?

Theatre Workshop: You will explore a play, and work within a group to reinterpret an extract of the play in a different style for a contemporary audience. This will be performed in front of a live audience.

Text in Action: You will explore one play, and perform it in a chosen style. You will also devise your own piece of theatre from a stimulus, linking to the style of a theatre practitioner. This will be performed in front of a live audience.

Text in Performance: You will study the social, historical, cultural and political background of three different plays, and create your own ideas of how they could be brought to life. You will write about these ideas in the final exam.

I’m really enoying studying drama at South Hunsley as we get to explore a lot of the theory in a practical way through workshop activites, which makes it far more engaging.

If you choose to study A Level Economics you will look at the production, consumption and sale of goods and services. You will also compare alternative ways of using the limited resources that countries and individuals possess and consider how efficient and/ or fair such alternatives are. Behind these alternatives lies the fundamental economic problem - scarce resources and infinite wants.

What will I learn?

Introduction to Markets and Market Failure Consider questions such as: who sets prices for cars? Why are footballers paid more than nurses? Are some supermarkets too powerful?

What happens when markets go wrong?

The National and Global Economy Investigate national and international issues such as who caused the global recession, how countries like the UK get into debt and why investing in young people’s education is key.

Business Behaviour and the Labour Market Looks at the activities of firms and their actions when part of different market structures with specific focus on how their economic output affects their efficiency.

A Global Perspective Focuses on globalisation, international trade, development and sustainability. Why are some countries less developed than others?

Economics is a great ‘real world’ subject and the teachers in the Business department are really supportive. We learn about market failure, the government, intervention in the market and attend workshops from Industry Professionals. I recently attended an interesting talk from the Group Aftersales Director at Ford and depending on your interests, this is a great course to take alongside Business or Financial Studies.“ Millie

Is this course for me?

The course will introduce you to methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. You will learn about structures and its functions, developments and variations. You will be inspired to develop your abilities to express yourself in speech and writing, producing texts for different audiences and purposes and in different genres. Independent study is an essential part of the course and you will need to read around the subject and understand new vocabulary and language theories in order to apply them to exam questions.

Studying English Language encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning and gives them a strong grounding in the academic principles relating to working with data. This workshop style of teaching and learning gives students academic confidence, as well as knowledge about the English language.

Language, the Individual and Society will introduce you to textual variations and representations, children’s language development (0-11 years) and methods of language analysis. (40% of A Level. Written exam: 2.5 hours).

Language Diversity and Change will allow you to explore language diversity and change over time. You will study the key concepts of audience, genre, purpose and mode as well as language in its wider social, geographical and temporal contexts. (40% of A Level. Written exam: 2.5 hours).

Language in Action will allow you to explore and analyse language data independently and develop and reflect upon your writing expertise. This is a non-exam assessment where you will be expected to produce a language investigation (2000 words excluding data) and a piece of original writing with commentary (750 words each).

Is this course for me?

English Literature is perfect for those students who love reading and interpreting texts in their own way. The course is centred on the deconstruction, analysis and exploration of a variety of texts from a range of periods including contemporary writers from the last 20 years.

There are opportunities to specialise in areas of interest for the coursework and students will be thoroughly prepared for the academic demands of higher education. Independent study is an essential part of English Literature therefore students are encouraged to read around the subject to achieve the top grades.

What will I learn?

Literary Genres: you will study four texts, all representing different aspects of the comedy genre: The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare; Emma by Jane Austen, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, and an anthology of poetry covering a range of influential poets. (Written exam; 2.5 hours; closed book; 40% of A Level).

Anything else?

The course encourages students to read texts independently and to bring their own prepared arguments to discussions.

This approach encourages academic exploration, yielding different and challenging interpretations of texts.

Future opportunities This course is particularly suitable for those students who want to study English Literature, Drama or English studies in Higher Education.

Many other courses such as Law also value an A Level qualification in English Literature due to the academic nature of the subject and the various skills you will acquire.

Texts and Genres: you will study three texts which represent the genres of crime or social protest writing: one post-2000 prose text; one poetry text and one further text, of which one must be written pre 1900. (Written exam; 3 hours; open book; 40% of A Level).

Theory and Independence: this is a non-exam assessment and is the study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by study of a Critical Anthology. (20% of A Level).

Apart from being interesting, studying History is also very useful. What will I learn?

You will learn both British and modern European history covering the Tudor period 1485-1603, Germany 1918-1945 and Russia 1856-1964. You will discover how turbulent these time periods were as all of these countries experimented with new religious and political ideas and were affected by radical change.

You will study two examined options: the Tudors 1485-1603 and Germany 1920-1945 (each worth 40% of the overall A Level grade). There is also a 20% non-examination component (Russia) to assess how well you can work independently to research a historical enquiry.

Are you organised? Can you juggle several tasks at once? Do you have a genuine interest in how computers work? This course is perfect for individuals who want to create real-life applications and can study for technical exams.

What will I learn?

This course has two exam units and three pieces of coursework – 50% of your marks are for coursework and 50% is based on exam performance.

Year 12 will focus on IT fundamentals to gain a solid background of IT knowledge. This will include the fundamentals of hardware, software, networks, and the ethical and business implications of using IT. These fundamentals will be assessed by exam.

Year 12 Pure maths includes calculus, geometry and trigonometry all of which will be developed further at A Level.  Mechanics is the study of the basics of Newton’s Laws of Motion and applies some of the fundamentals taught in the Pure Maths section of the course.  Statistics involves learning various methods for data presentation, probability, understanding statistical distributions and also hypothesis testing.

Year 13 Continuing your studies in Year 13 involves building up the skills learned in the three key areas of Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics in Year 12.  Pure Maths extends knowledge and understanding of calculus and trigonometry and introduces the use of numerical methods.

Mechanics extends kinematics and Newton’s Laws of Motion into two dimensions.  Statistics begin to interpret correlation and estimation of correlation coefficient.

Discrete maths is the study of graphs, network flows and game theory amongst other things.

Statistics involves learning about discrete and continuous random variables.

A Level Further Maths Much like A Level Maths the full Further Maths A Level also develops further the skills learned at AS level in each of the areas of Pure, Discrete and Statistics.  Pure extends knowledge of matrices and vectors and also begins to apply calculus to the hyperbolic trigonometric functions.

Discrete introduces group theory and also other new algorithms such as the simplex algorithm.  Statistics introduces other distributions such as t-distribution and exponential distribution.

The Further Maths course is challenging and complex but also enjoyable and rewarding. We learn about three topics; Pure, Statistics and Discreet. Discreet is interesting as it focuses on how people think and how they come to decisions.

Statistics is based on probability and pure is based on normal maths but more creative. The course ties in nicely with A Level Maths as lots of things cross over.”

This is a two year course which is designed to extend your knowledge and appreciation of music. You will be expected to create and develop your own musical ideas and demonstrate technical, interpretative and communication skills through performing.

What will I learn?

Appraising Music Three strands of music are represented covering the three key genres of Baroque: the solo concerto, Classical: the operas of Mozart and Romantic: the piano music of Chopin, Brahms and Grieg. You will also study two other components selected from the following areas of study: pop music, music for media, music for theatre, jazz, contemporary traditional music, art music since 1910.

Performance A solo and ensemble performance as an instrumentalist, vocalist or music production (via technology).

Composition Study compositional techniques using and developing your own musical ideas. A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required.

A Level Music has allowed me to explore new styles of music and greatly expand my musical knowledge. It has also provided a platform to take my passion to the next level and I’m so grateful of how supportive my teachers have been.”

Photography has changed our world dramatically and has developed from its beginnings in the early 1800s into the complex, fast moving and exciting world of visual media that pervades the modern world. The technology changes and advances at an astonishing pace but creativity is only limited by your imagination.

What will I learn?

Year 12 - Coursework Portfolio You will create a portfolio which will include technical instructions and projects exploring themes such as lighting and distortion. You will learn how to use a digital camera, editing skills such as Photoshop, lighting and studio photography and develop skills in visual language. You will learn how to evaluate the work of professional photographers and will have the opportunity to develop personal ideas and themes within the criteria set.

Year 13 - Coursework Project You will carry out a personal investigation into the work of a photographer/artist or a theme in photography/art such as portraiture, or movement.

Component 1: 30% Physiological factors affecting performance, focuses on developing knowledge of the science behind physical activity. This includes the structure and function of key systems in the human body, the forces that act upon us and the adaptations made to the body through diet and training.

Component 2: 20% Psychological factors affecting performance focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of the psychological factors that can affect performers in physical activity and sport.

All the lessons are theory based. The practical assessment is ongoing throughout the 2 years and performers should be participating in at least local club level or higher on a regular basis, recording their competition in a log book and gaining filmed evidence.

Component 3: 20% Sociocultural issues in physical activity and sport focuses on the sociological and contemporary issues that influence and affect physical activity and sport for both the audience and the performer and how sport affects society.

Component 4: 30% Performance in physical education you will be internally assessed in one practical activity from the approved activity list and an oral response to a live performance called the EAPI Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement.

This course applies mathematics and provides numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality.

It is a challenging course but, through hard work from the start by reading around the subject and practising questions, you will be successful.

What will I learn?

Year 12 You will study the structure of the atom and other areas of particle physics, along with more classical topics such as the properties of waves, electricity and Newton’s laws of motion.

Year 13 You will study the more complex and mathematically challenging topics of Simple Harmonic Motion and the Kinetic Model, as well as looking at magnetism, radioactivity and how gravity influences the orbits of the planets.

The option module looks at the turning points in Physics.

These do not contribute to your final grade but you may be awarded a certificate from the exam board for showing competence in Experimental Physics. Many questions in the exams will relate to these practical activities.

There are three exams for A Level Physics.

These exams contain a mixture of short answer, long answer and multiple choice questions. All exams are taken at the end of the course. It is advisable that the Physics students also take A Level Maths. Students without A Level Maths will be expected to attend additional Maths for Physicists sessions.

Central to the content of this qualification is the requirement for learners to understand and apply processes of iterative design in their designing and manufacturing process.

Product Design requires learners to apply mathematical skills and understand related science.

What will I learn?

The Iterative Design Project (50%) The ‘Iterative Design Project’ requires learners to undertake a substantial design, make and evaluate project centred on the iterative processes of explore, create and evaluate.

Principles of Product Design Exam (26.7%) Learners are required to analyse existing products, demonstrate applied mathematical skills and technical knowledge of materials, product functionality, manufacturing processes and techniques as well as showing their understanding of wider social, moral and environmental issues that impact on the design and manufacturing industries.

Problem Solving in Product Design Exam (23.3%) Learners are required to demonstrate their problem solving and evaluation skills, including; applying their knowledge and understanding of designing and manufacturing products and demonstrate their higher thinking skills to solve problems and evaluate the suitability of design solutions.

At the centre of any iterative process is the need to develop creative thinking skills.

Is this course for me?

Psychology is suitable for anyone who has an interest in understanding the complexities of group dynamics to the drives and motivation that cause unique individual behaviour. If you are thinking of entering a people orientated career and have a willingness to explore and research challenging scientific theories and perspectives, Psychology could be for you.

What will I learn?

Psychological approaches: Psychology explains the uniqueness of human behaviour however not all psychologists agree on the causes or reasoning behind this behaviour. This module will explore different approaches and how each one will explain human behaviour from a different perspective.

Research Methods: Psychology is a science and this unit helps you develop a strong understanding of the scientific processes required in order to develop a clear understanding of the different psychological theories.

Psychopathology: A collection of modules that focus on the study of mental disorders, these include: Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia and Phobias. Here you will gain a clear understanding of how mental disorders are classified, explained and treated.

I chose to study Pyschology as it complements my ambition of studying sport at university. The course teaches you about how different mindsets can affect your physical performance and there are lots of case studies to learn from. The course is challenging but interesting and the teachers are passionate about the subject, which comes across in lessons.

This course is suitable for those who want to follow a programme of study related to laboratory science. Students who will follow a syllabus in which there will be a mixture of ongoing assessment and external examinations as part of the course.

What will I learn?

The BTEC National Certificate offers flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the specialist units. You will gain experience of a range of instruments and their use as well as analytical methods. You will study several key practical techniques used in the scientific laboratory and their application in the workplace.

All BTEC students are assessed by means of assignments and external examinations. The course is 60% exam 40% coursework (1 exam in Year 12, 1 exam in Year 13). Assignments allow you to demonstrate that you have skills and knowledge to achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

The course will be delivered in South Hunsley’s bespoke science laboratories.

These laboratories house specialist science equipment and you will be encouraged to take part in practical investigative science to help you develop the strong practical science skills required for moving into scientific employment.

Sociology is the study of the development, structure and functioning of human society; exploring how and why society and the human experience are interlinked with one another.

What will I learn?

In A Level Sociology you will cover a variety of modules, these include: Families and Households: Focuses on the roles and functions of the family and how this institution impacts on society as a whole.

Education: Explores how key factors, such as: gender, social class and ethnicity, impact on children’s experience, performance and achievement within education.

Crime and Deviance: Examines criminal and deviant behaviour from a variety of sociological perspectives and questions the different roles/ purposes it performs within society.

Sociology Perspectives and Theories: In sociology there are a variety of approaches and theories to explain the interaction between the individual and society. You will develop a clear understanding of the different perspectives and how they support or challenge each other’s views.

This course is aimed at students aspiring for a professional career in the sports industry.

The content provides the knowledge understanding and skills that underpin job roles within the sports industry.

The ation c u d E e c n a i l l A Who we are: The Education Alliance Multi-Academy Trust was established in 2015 so that South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College could support the setting up of Hunsley Primary School, the East Riding’s first and only Free School.

In February 2016, Malet Lambert School, an 11-16 school in Hull, joined the trust and the following year, Driffield School and Sixth Form joined as a sponsored academy. The most recent secondary school to join is The Snaith School, an 11-16 school, and North Cave CE Primary School joined at the start of the academic year 2019-20. In addition to the six schools, South Hunsley School is also a Teaching School (The lead in Wolds Teaching School Alliance) and a National Support School.

The trust also operates Yorkshire Wolds Teacher Training, the only SCITT based in East Yorkshire, which is training a new generation of primary and secondary teachers in East Riding and Hull.
