Brides reflect: the most important takeaways for wedding planning

ONCE THE ADRENALINE AND EXCITEMENT OF THE BIG DAY ABATES, BRIDES TEND TO RUN A NEAR POST-GAME-ANALYSIS ON THE PLANNING STAGES BEFORE THE WEDDING, AS WELL AS ON THE DAY ITSELF. HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS FROM FOUR BRIDES WHO’D LIKE TO SAVE YOU THEIR TROUBLE. By Alina Dain Sharon JointMedia News Service

n my wedding day last fall, I was very nervous. My husband and I planned our celebration, to be held in Chicago, entirely on our own and all the way from Boston. We were also combining a Russian-Jewish family with a Sabra-Israeli family, and members of each took long flights to the U.S. for the wedding. Needless to say, there were cultural and logistical difficulties from the start. Add to that the typical “Murphy’s Law” of weddings (our rabbi’s computer broke on the day, deleting all the notes he made for our ceremony)—and it was a stressful prologue to the big day. While the actual wedding was ultimately a happy occasion, looking back, there were things I wish I had known or done differently to ease my stress during the planning stages. JointMedia News Service decided to collect advice from a few brides to save future ones unnecessary angst. Follow their advice, and aside from potential technological glitches, your wedding day should be stress-free and extra special.

Hire a wedding planner: it will save you money

... but be prepared for the ensuing difficulties

“We used a wedding planner, which I would highly recommend to other brides if you find the right one for you,” said Amy Beth Green Sayegh, an actuary from Chicago, Ill., who got married in August of 2010. Using the planner turned out to be cheaper, Sayegh said, because she was well acquainted with the vendor packages in the area and knew how to get the biggest bang for the buck. Sayegh saw the value of a planner’s experience first hand when she decided to select a photographer on her own. At their reception, the photographer wasn’t cooperative. He later refused to deliver on a promised photo book and lost some of their pictures.

Sayegh’s mother always told her throughout the wedding planning process that weddings can make people very nervous. Sometimes incorporating different families into one celebration, and ultimately one life, can be challenging. Sayegh’s husband is Sephardic and the son of parents from Syria and Egypt. Due to some cultural differences and wedding nerves, it took time for everyone to establish the good relationship they have now.

Nurit Friedberg, a social worker from Cincinnati, Ohio, got married in June of last year. She said it’s important to involve both families in the celebration. “We accomplished this by inviting both of our rabbis to co-officiate...They were able to give us great advice on how to incorporate special details in the ceremony, such as my husband’s Zaidy’s tallit or my greatgrandmother’s candlesticks.” For Friedberg’s ceremony, her grandmother wove the chuppah, her aunt created the ketubah, and family friends were involved in other aspects, such as playing the music. “Everything was more meaningful because it was created by someone we love,” she said. Yael Mazor-Garfinkle married her husband in July 2011 in Lawrence, Mass., and asked a close friend from cantorial school to officiate their wedding. “She took our vision for our ceremony and transformed it into a communal celebration.” The wedding processional was sung by the bride’s sister, the groom’s aunt, and the officiator, and was accompanied by the groom’s uncle on guitar. The couple also asked seven sets of loved ones to read personally written blessings.

ried in May of 2010 in an Orthodox ceremony, despite the fact that their families were mostly secular. “It was so hard to plan an Orthodox ceremony with parents who were so not into it. They knew nothing about it, they’ve never even seen one,” Yalovetskaya said. The bride’s mother found the experience especially stressful and weird, and had a minor emotional breakdown before the ceremony. “We had a difficult time picking a rabbi who would want to do an Orthodox ceremony but would understand that the people would not be Orthodox and that the entire party hereafter would be held at La Mirage, which is a non-Kosher restaurant,” Polatsky also said. They also struggled to find an affordable kosher caterer to supply food just for those guests who require it. At the end of the ceremony, the bride’s mother relaxed and decided she actually liked the wedding. “Make the wedding that you want to have for yourself and the one you want to remember. It’s ok if it’s the wedding that everyone else wants as long as it’s the wedding that you want.” At the same time “try to be nice and accommodating as possible because it supposed to be for the whole family,” Yalovetskaya said. At my own wedding, everything ultimately came together into the most beautiful day of our lives. The rabbi somehow ad-libbed a wonderful chuppah ceremony, my parents got over “losing” their only daughter and I married my best friend.

As Sayegh beautifully said, “it’s your life together that’s important, and the marriage, not the wedding day.”

» Leave enough time for pictures and have a photo list so you don’t forget important family pictures.

» Money saver: Include do-it-yourself projects, with the clothes, bouquets or

other decorations. These can be a great bonding experience with your bridal party or family, add a personal touch to the day and are a good way to keep within the budget if you’re having difficulty.

» Pictures are all you have to remember your wedding day by, so pick a good

photographer, and be willing to invest more money in a great one. A bad photographer, even if cheap, is not worth the headache you’ll experience after the wedding.

» Money saver: Hire a videographer to shoot only raw footage, and then edit the

video yourself. This can also make for a fun activity, as well as a way to relive the wedding with your new spouse.

» READ all of your vendor contracts. Negotiate the details, and don’t pay the

whole sum to vendors until the work is completed in a satisfactory manner. It seems like a hassle, but arguing with bad vendors over bad contracts is a lot worse.

» If you’re inviting many out-of-town guests, consider hosting the wedding at a hotel near the airport.

A wedding menu that transcends borders WHEN MARRYING SOMEONE FROM A DIFFERENT BACKGROUND, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PROVIDE A MENU EVERYONE WILL LOVE? JointMedia News Service — As borders become more faint and online dating services more prevalent, many of us are pushed out of our respective ethnic bubbles and into the arms of a special someone from a different background. While Jews share many customs and traditions, we also have our share of diversity— including the kosher and not, and Ashkenazim and Sephardim, to name a few. Attempt to fuse these different customs into one wedding, and you’ll undoubtedly run into conflict. Particularly in an area that all Jews, regardless of background, feel quite passionate about: food. Andrew Wiener, founder and owner of Catering by Andrew, a 2010 and 2011 TheKnot.com Best of Weddings pick, discusses what families and caterers can do to create a menu that will leave all guests satisfied. Wiener confirms that the food preferences across cultures differ greatly. However, this can stem from something as minor as the bride and groom being from different cities. Sephardic and Ashkenazi differences are also challenging. “First of all, Persians (and other Sephardim) can’t even tell you how many people are coming. In Sephardic culture, especially Persian culture, they don’t RSVP, and if a party starts at 6, they won’t come until 8, but they stall all night long,” Wiener describes. “Then they dance like crazy and eat like crazy.” This eradicates the possibility of a sit-down dinner, and many Sephardim adapt by serving buffet-style meals. No doubt, this is in contrast with the Ashkenazi trend of arriving on time and eating a meal in separate courses. The differences extend beyond food; style is also important, Wiener says. “For Russians,” he describes, “the less you can see the table the more respectful it is.” Wiener shares the story of a Russian client of his, aptly named Boris, who requested that more food be put on the table. To Wiener’s objection of physically, there being no space left for the food, Boris responded, “just pile it on top of each other.” One of Wiener’s greater challenges is creating a menu for two families—one kosher and one not. “Some families have no concept, it’s not within their reality of what kosher food is [or isn’t].” This is difficult, Wiener says, because creativity won’t suffice—some food options are limited. So, marrying the person you love, but concerned that half your guests will leave with a frustrated palette? Wiener suggests the following approach. First, keep an eye on the big picture. Wedding planning can be hard

and stressful, or it can be a lot of fun, and there’s really no reason why it has to be the former, he says. “My advice to people is to bring the families together at the table, to come up with a common ground. Find the items that families feel is necessary to serve. It’s a matter of making sure it’s a fun relationship, not an adversarial relationship. Keep the focus on the bride and groom, and what they want.” Second, if one of the families is kosher, and the other is not, you’re going to have to find a great caterer. “We do well with this because we make good food, but when you have a family that doesn’t keep kosher, they are usually foodies, and certain things are just limited,” Wiener said. “We get very good [product], but a lot of people are used to eating at boutiquey restaurants. So what we had to do was upgrade our culinary team to keep up. You have to be really up to speed.” Third, if either the bride or groom comes from a family with specific culinary tastes, consider bringing in a specialized chef. “We have actually brought in chefs at times, we’ll bring in a Persian chef at times to give that flavor.” Finally, the golden rule, Wiener says, is to keep the main course constant, but throw in a buffet style, or incorporate the different backgrounds into the cocktail hour. For example, if it is a partially Russian wedding, Wiener will include some trays of “zakuski,” or appetizers. Instead of serving a plated dessert, he’ll create a generous dessert buffet. “For Persians it’s the same thing, we take what they normally serve at the buffets for dinner, and serve it as an hor d’oeuvre. We’ll make sure there’s a lot of extra food, a lot of choices, and then serve a sit down dinner.” So rejoice in having found the person you love, agree with your family on the big-ticket food items, and relax and enjoy your day. Who knows— watching your relatives light up at the foreign-yet-delicious tastes might provide some added amusement.

Many a bride and groom have felt the crunch of compiling responses and then coming up with an acceptable seating arrangement for the reception. Seating guests is not a task exclusive to brides- and groomsto-be. Anyone holding a special party, whether it’s at a reception hall or a restaurant, must determine seating arrangements. Before you begin to make seating arrangements, you will need the entire list of people attending the event. Having a final headcount is essential. While you may want to do a seating chart early into the reception planning, it’s best left until a few weeks before your wedding day, when you know who will and will not be in attendance. Next, know the number of tables you will be allotted in the party space. A catering hall may have a set number of seats that can fit at each table and can usually provide you with a map of the room or a blank

seating chart. Many standard reception tables can comfortably seat between eight to 10 people. Squeezing in more people can make for an uncomfortable dining experience. If you are a visual person, you may benefit from writing guests’ names on small pieces of paper and physically moving them around your seating chart, much as you would do if you were trying to arrange furniture on a room layout. Otherwise, write things down as you plan. When arranging the seating, figure out the head or bridal table. This is one of the easier tables to seat because it is traditionally filled with members of your bridal party and their respective spouses or dates. If your bridal party is especially large, consider flanking your own sweetheart table with two tables for the bridal party on either side. After arranging the bridal table, focus on seating parents and close relatives of the bride and groom next. Many couples prefer to separate their families at the wedding, so the groom’s family may sit on one side of the room and the bride’s family will sit on

the other. This means there will be two parental tables. Consider seating grandparents or other close family members at these tables to ensure they have a place of prominence in the room. This usually means being close to the dance floor to have a good view of all of the festivities. If your parents are divorced or there are any other strained feelings among parents, you can further separate into another table for stepparents, to avoid any unpleasantness or confrontation. Many wedding receptions are full of friends and even coworkers of parents whom the couple tying the knot does not even know. You may need further clarification of their relationships and who gets along before seating them. In fact, ask a parent to take care of arranging their own friends so you will be certain the arrangements will be comfortable for everyone. A friends’ table is usually a mingling of friends or your own coworkers who are of similar ages. A friends’ table can make guests who arrived solo feel more comfortable because they can converse

with others who are like-minded. Seating children can be tricky. You may be inclined to seat youngsters at their own table, which is fine if the children are mature enough to handle sitting by themselves. But young children sitting apart from their parents may be nervous. Furthermore, the parents will continually have to get up and check on the kids. Very young children are best seated alongside their folks. When arranging seating, you also must consider special needs’ individuals who may have mobility issues. Such individuals should be seated near doors and restrooms so it’s easier for them to get around once the reception hits full swing. Try to accommodate special requests, like not seating the elderly too close to music speakers. Keep in mind that there is software and even some smartphone apps that make it even easier to make seating arrangements. Tech-savvy couples may prefer this method to the old-fashioned pencil and paper technique.
