Spring is here and we’re excited to bring you our second full issue of Southern Sweets. To be honest with you, this came out later than we had hoped. Between our busy work schedules, traveling, unanticipated home repairs, and unexpected family tragedies, life has hit us both hard in the last couple of months. Yet, we’ve been determined to pull ourselves back up and give 100% into Southern Sweets. This is truly a labor of love and passion for us to do and although life continues to happen and throw curve balls from time to time, it’s not about what happens to you, it’s how you respond to it that makes all the difference.

This issue is dedicated to all you creative spirits, entrepreneurs, go-getters, and anyone reading this, to never let anyone or anything deter you from your dreams. Continue to persevere, focus, put in the work and enjoy the fruits of your labor. So we truly hope you enjoy the latest issue of our fruit of labor.

BEFORE

A Staircase Renovation When Traditional Goes Contemporary

When we moved in, our house was already approximately nine years old. Which meant a house full of that dated yellow-gold tone wood for everything: kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and stairwell railing. Yep, that all had to go. To me, despite all my efforts painting, styling each room with new furnishes, the house still felt dated. I wanted my house to have that new, fresh, modern look and feel and I knew I had a long way to go before I got there.

If it was 100% up to me, I’m pretty sure not only would I have stained the stair rails and painted the treads and risers, I also would have changed out all the spindles and ultimately, hired a contractor to install an entirely different style staircase all together, one with glass and metal or wire paneling. Sounds extreme, but I promise, the vision in my head, it would have been an one-of-akind industrial style staircase.

However, since the staircase is such a huge focal point in the entry way, this project had to be a joint decision between my husband and I and we had to have a budget for it. He actually liked the staircase “as-is” and I hated the whole thing, but we had to come to a compromise. If I change the stairwell railing color for my sanity, then I’ll keep those white spindles “as-is” for him. We’ll both have something we like.

I’m typically drawn to darker wood colors anyway, so I first researched various wood stain brands and colors and the processes for each. I also tested out my wood to know which process would work best on my stairs and to know whether to paint or stain. To bring in the light and make it pop, I decided to paint the risers white.

The entire project took me about a week to do. I worked at night, waiting till everyone was sleep to eliminate any foot traffic going up or coming down.

I'm super happy with the final outcome, but this focal area is still not quite complete. My next DIY phase is to add white board and batton aloing the bench and stair walls and possibly add a stair runner, so stay tuned!

...THE DIY PROCESS 1. PREP THE AREA Before I started, I made sure to sweep, wipe down and clean my stairs really good. I mean really, really good. Any leftover debris, even as small as lint, will be trapped in the finish and very visible. I also taped off each tread to help give me a clean even paint look.

Since I couldn't do all the stairs at one time, I placed yellow sticky notes on the stairs that were NOT to be painted or stained. That's how I would make my way back up and down as needed.

Most jobs like this also require light sanding before painting, so be sure you cover and prep your space for that.

2. APPLY STAIN I used Minwax PolyShades in Espresso Satin and bought just one quart size from Lowe's. That size was more than enough.

I applied the stain in even strokes, going in the same direction and starting light. No need to go heavy when applying, but please follow your manufacturer's instructions carefully. Give the proper amount of time for drying as indicated. I gave 24hrs before applying a second coat.

Be sure to wear gloves too. It was a pain trying to remove paint stains from my hands.

3. ADD A FINISH Once you're done staining your stairs and the final coat has dried, apply two coats of polyurethane varnish to protect the finish.

Again, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully regarding number of coats and dry time.

4. PAINT RISERS AND REFRESH SPINDLES Once my stairs were completely dry, I painted the risers white. I chose a paint and primer-in-one using Sherwin Williams Ovation Extra White Semigloss. Since the spindles were already white, using the same Sherwin Williams paint, I retouched every spindle, one by one. I didn't want a new, fresh and revitalized staircase with dingy, banged up spindles to look at. If I do one, I had to do them all. This was tedious, but well worth it.

5. CLEAN UP All done! Pat on the back. When everything is completely dry and you're happy with the final look, carefully remove all painter's tape and plastic sheeting.

Your Personal SMART House Cleaner Roomba Robot Vacuum – I’ve seen it in action and it’s quite amazing. I don’t have one yet, but now I definitely want one. Something so small, yet so powerful. The Wi-Fi enabled Roomba 890 is compatible for all floor types, controllable by your smart phone, and has five times the suction power to pick up dirt and debris. We have a lot of foot traffic in our home, so to be able to schedule regular clean up time by my fingertips using the HOME app, will save me a lot of time that I can spend more with my kids, do other household chores, or work on continued Southern Sweets’ tasks.

Organizational Journals Journals by Recollections – I love writing and organizational tools. I bought several of these new journal planners from Michael’s Craft store to help me focus and better plan, budget and accomplish even more. They have a boat load of categories to choose from, but I selected a gratitude journal, things to do journal, goals, and menu planner journal. In the words of Koya, my other creative half, “Write it. See it. Believe it. Live it.” By writing things down and seeing it, gives me more accountability to actually get things down and feeling more productive. Prices are $4.99 each.

Airwick Essential Mist Airwick Essential Mist Diffuser – I live for smell good scents for the home, car, and body. Nothing is better than to open your doors and be knocked with scents of lavender, almond, vanilla, or cinnamon in the air. My intent is for my home to smell just as good, if not better, as it does when you walk in Kirkland’s or Pier1. OMG. The Airwick diffuser is battery operated and you can control the mist release levels, from high to low, which in turn affects how frequently you’ll need to refill. Keeping it on low works great for me, because I use it in small spaces like our bathrooms. Prices are $9.99 for diffuser starter kit.

A Few of Our Favorite Things The Ultimate DIY Tool Cricut Explore/Maker – When it comes to crafting, a Cricut is like the ultimate tool. It can be used to cut a variety of materials. You create your design online and then the machine cuts the design onto your material. You can make anything from custom t-shirt designs, scrapbook designs, vinyl decals, greeting cards, earrings, fabric cuts…. the possibilities truly are endless. I plan to use mine to make new pillow cover and accent pieces to revamp the rooms in my house. Prices range from $140-$400.

KIMistry Skin After you’ve deep cleaned your house, your hands are likely to be a little dry. I love using KIMistry Skin’s Body Butter to moisturize. It’s all natural and comes in a variety of fragrances. I also love their body scrubs. Prices range from $5-$36.

LA’s Totally Awesome AllPurpose Concentrated Cleaner I love this cleaner for so many reasons. For starters, it’s only $1 at The Dollar Tree. It perfect for cleaning so many things. I use it to clean my stove and cabinets. After a while, you start to get grease buildup on your cabinets and range hood. This is strong enough to get the greasy buildup off but also gentle enough to not damage any surfaces. I also like to keep it around to clean up any small stains on the carpet or fabric furniture. There’s no acid, ammonia, nor bleach in it so it’s safe to use around kids and pets. It is concentrated so be sure to dilute it with water. And did I mention it’s only $1?!?!?!?!

Travel With Intention Travel Tips from @TheBougieBlackHyppie

I love to travel. I know, I know, you hear people say that all the time, but I assure you they don’t mean it like I mean it.

Nearly every day I dream of my ideal life. That ideal life allows me to be location independent. I desire to build a life where I can work from anywhere: writing from the beautiful beaches of Bali; responding to an email while watching the sunrise in Santorini; onboarding a new client after practicing morning yoga in the mountains of the Amalfi Coast. These are my dreams. They are not yet reality, but I am determined to make them so!

I travel fairly regularly, probably more than the average person. We tend to take at least 3-4 trips a year. Sometimes internationally, other times within the states. For me, it’s not so much about where I go, but more about going somewhere, and experiencing something different.

For me, travel is not a means of escape. It’s so much more than that. If you are travelling to escape your day to day life, you have bigger problems that need to be addressed. I can recommend a licensed therapist. However, if you are travelling to create unforgettable memories and unparalleled experiences, I have a few tips below.

TRAVEL WITH INTENTION | 8

1. GO SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT The list of places I’d like to visit is probably a mile long, so my personal preference is to choose a different place each time I travel. I know a lot of people who travel to the same places all the time. You know the popular locales: Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica, or a cruise. These places are so popular because they are relatively affordable and comfortable. Generally you can go to an allinclusive resort and never have to leave. Yes, you get to drink all day for one set price but what else? And if you’ve been to one allinclusive resort, or on one cruise, you’ve been on them all. So choose a different place. Go somewhere random. Pull out a map (or google), close your eyes and land on a random city or country. Then pack up and go! Why? See Tip #2.

2. STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE Travelling is not just about going somewhere to say you’ve been. Travelling is about stepping out of your comfort zone. When you are able to step out of your comfort zone, you are able to grow and change. You are able to create unimaginable experiences when you do something that you’ve not done before. This may sound silly but doing something that makes you feel completely uncomfortable could change your life!

3. LEARN SOMETHING NEW I consider myself an eternal student. I don’t study scholastically because that costs money and I have enough student loan debt already. I learn daily because I am an avid reader, I have recently become addicted to podcasts and talk radio, and I travel with intention. By travelling with intention, you are guaranteed to learn something new. You become intimately familiar with a new country, culture, custom, or tradition. Don’t be afraid to talk to the locals. In fact, I highly encourage interactions with the citizens of the area you are visiting.

We were in London last year when a couple from the area asked if they could sit with us, we of course said yes.

We started conversing and realized how much we had in common. We ended up hanging out with them for the rest of the evening and are still in contact with them through social media.

4. BE ADVENTUROUS The definition of adventure when used as a verb is to engage in hazardous and exciting activity, especially the exploration of unknown territory. With that being said, see the tourist spots because you kind of have to, but do not plan your entire vacation around popular attractions. Explore. Be adventurous. Find some hidden local bars and restaurants, venture into the unknown parts of the city.

Find some locals to be your guide. They know more about their home than you could ever google. While in Cuba, my fiancée and I ventured into a small city called Vinales. It was a beautiful place with amazing history. We ate great local food and even visited a family farm and had a cigar rolling tutorial. It was an adventure that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

5. CREATE MEMORIES

Some of my best life lessons have been learned while travelling. If you step out of your comfort zone, and travel with meaning, you will learn so much about yourself. Try it. I can’t guarantee you that you will have a great time, or that you will ever return. Things will go wrong. You will be uncomfortable at times. You will possibly have bad food or arrive to lodging that wasn’t as advertised. But if you push through, remain positive, and leave your American privilege at the door, I can guarantee you that you will be changed. And change is good.

Some of my most amazing memories are from a trip that I have taken. I have met some great people and lifelong friends by simply going somewhere different, being temporarily uncomfortable, learning new things, and being adventurous. The pictures may fade, and the souvenirs will eventually break; but you will forever carry those memories and experiences with you. They are permanently in your mind, and in your heart. They are a part of what makes you special. They are stories that you can tell your children and grandchildren. Those memories are irreplaceable.

Quick and Easy Sunday Brunch Recipes

Brunch is my favorite meal of all time. You get the best breakfast sweets and put them on the same plate as your favorite savory lunch items and then top it all off with a mimosa!!!!!! It’s like heaven in food form. Unfortunately, most restaurants have gauged the prices for such deliciousness.

Here are a few easy and affordable brunch recipes that are great for after church or even a small gathering with your old college friends.

Chicken and Waffles Ingredients • 1.5-2 lbs boneless chicken cut into strip or chunks (breast or thighs) • 2 eggs • 2 tbsp water • Salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste • 1 cup frying oil (vegetable or canola) • 2 cups flour seasoned with 1 tsp of each garlic powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, salt, dried parsley • Waffle mix

Directions

Heat oil. Beat eggs with water. Dip chicken into egg mixture and then flour mixture. Set aside until oil is hot and ready. Once the oil is ready for frying, fry chicken until done. Make waffles according to the package. Serve with warm syrup.

ROASTED POTATOES

BREAKFAST CASSEROLE

HASH BROWN CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS: • 6-10 slices of bread • 6 eggs • ½ cup milk • Onions, bell peppers, chopped • Jalapenos, chopped (optional) • ½ lb sausage, bacon, and/or ham, cooked (optional) • 2 cups cheese • ½ cup cheese for topping • Salt and pepper to taste

INGREDIENTS: • 1 package frozen shredded hash browns, cooked • 6 eggs • ½ cup milk • Onions, bell peppers, chopped • Jalapenos, chopped (optional) • ½ lb sausage, bacon, and/or ham, cooked (optional) • 2 cups cheese • ½ cup cheese for topping • Salt and pepper to taste

INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb baby red potatoes, chopped into bite size pieces • 1 medium size onion, diced • 1 medium size green bell pepper, diced • 1 medium size red bell pepper, diced • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp paprika

DIRECTIONS: Saute onions and peppers. In a large bowl, mix eggs and milk.

Add all the other ingredients (except ½ cup cheese for topping and bread) to mixture. Place bread into sprayed casserole dish. Pour mixture over bread.

Top with cheese. Cover dish and sit in fridge overnight. The next morning, bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.

DIRECTIONS: Saute onions and peppers. In a large bowl, mix eggs and milk.

Add all the other ingredients (except ½ cup cheese for topping) to mixture. Pour mixture into lightly sprayed casserole dish.

Top with cheese. Cover dish and sit in fridge overnight or cook immediately. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.

DIRECTIONS: Mix all ingredients into a bowl.

Bake at 375 degrees in a casserole dish for 30-45 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

One's Transition to a Healthier Lifestyle

Last summer, I came across the Netflix documentary, "What the Health?" I've see numerous documentaries about why you should eat this and why you shouldn't eat that. I figured it would be just another movie telling me to not eat meat. However, I found it rather informative, because it shined a light on how the organizations we trust to tell us what is healthy and what is not, are being bought by the industries selling unhealthy food. In that moment, I vowed to never eat pork again and to try to stop eating as much meat. One failed grocery shopping attempt later (I forgot to buy meat for that week) and I embarked on my journey to stop eating meat.

My goal was never to become a vegetarian. I prefer the term Koyatarian. It's very similar to being a flexitarian. I decided to reprogram my mindset to eat what I thought was healthy for me. I started a Pinterest board to research recipes. I love side dishes so I figured this would be easy. I spoke to my cousin, who has been a vegan for 15 years, to get some advice. He told me to do whatever I wanted. If I wanted to be a vegetarian, but eat a burger one day, that's fine., He told me not to be so hard on myself and to eat what I wanted, but to also remember my purpose behind it all.

Meatless Diet Facts Grocery stores are gradually increasing their meatless product inventory. Although it can be challenging to serve healthy meals on a budget, consider these 10 meatless diet benefits the next time you're at the supermarket.

During the first month, I allowed myself to have one meal per week with meat.

Every week for that month, that meal was hot wings. I'm born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and hot wings are life. The first few weeks I was okay, but that third week, I got sick while enjoying an order of boneless wings. This was extremely odd, but in that moment I knew what was happening. My body had started to reject chicken. I was heat broken, but this was the motivation I needed to continue with this journey.

By the second month, I was completely meat free. My energy levels were off the charts. I felt better. I was sleeping better. I was no longer randomly congested at night. I actually started entertaining the idea of veganism...but cheese is bae. I'm not about to ruin my relationship with cheese like I did with chicken. It's not worth the risk...not yet at least. However, I stopped buying cow's milk and limited the amount of eggs I eat.

I was doing great, but then, it was time for our family cruise.

I never wanted to restrict myself on this journey. I try to live a life with no regrets so I told myself that while traveling, I'm allowed to eat everything. I never want to say, "I regret not eating that." So....I ate it all on the trip. The first thing was a bacon cheese burger. I picked the bacon off. The burger wasn't great. It was just alright. I knew that I would eat a steak, but by day 4, I never ordered the steak. Our last day on the trip was fried chicken day. I ate a plate of chicken. It was delicious. I didn't even get sick....until I did. By dinner time, I was so sick, I had to go back to my cabin and try to sleep it off. That was the moment I realized my culinary life had changed forever. Chicken was the enemy. Meat was no longer a requirement for me.

Upon my return, I decided to stop with chicken. I added seafood to my diet, but poultry, beef, and pork were out. Some people say I'm a pescatarian, but I still prefer Koyatarian. I don't want to commit to any of these dietary titles because what I'm willing to eat can change entirely overnight or just for one particular meal. All I know, is that I can't eat chicken and I no longer like the way other meats make me feel.

Here we are, almost a year later and I'm still on the meatless bandwagon. I've replaced a lot of my favorite dishes with a meatless alternative. My new favorite hot wing restaurant, The Wing Bar, now offers vegan wings and they are delicious!!!! At family dinners, everyone knows that whatever we eat, we must have meatless options for Koya. My friends are still trying to grasp the idea that I'm no longer providing meat at my dinner parties, but they'll get use to it eventually. It has been pretty easy giving up meat. The hardest part is reprogramming your mind but once you do that, you can do anything.

Meatless Recipes

I no longer eat meat but I still crave my favorite dishes. Here are a few meatless recipes.

BBQ Jackfruit Ingredients: • 1 16 oz can of jackfruit • ½ red onion, chopped • 1 cup bbq sauce • 1 tsp oil • 1 tsp each, garlic powder, paprika, parsley, salt Directions: 1. Saute onions in the oil 2. Add jackfruit and seasonings to oil 3. Sautee jackfruit until it starts to resemble pulled pork 4. Add bbq sauce and simmer for 15 minutes 5. Serve and enjoy

Vegetable Lo Mein Ingredients: • Lo mein noodles or spaghetti noodles, cooked • ½ chopped onion • ½ bell pepper • 1 tsp minced garlic • 1 tsp ginger • 1 package fresh or frozen stir fry vegetables • 2 Tbsp oil • 1 tsp each, garlic powder, white pepper, and salt • Sauce • 1 tsp sesame oil • 2 Tbsp soy sauce • 1 Tbsp sriracha Directions: 1. Saute onions and peppers in oil.

2. Add garlic and ginger to oil. Saute until fragrant.

3. Add vegetables and cook until tender.

4. Add noodles, seasonings, and sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes.
