Southern Regional Technical College

Wednesday, December 4, 2024 • SRTC - Bainbridge

Keynote Speaker: BENJIE NOBLES

Benjie Nobles, Southern Regional Technical College’s 2025 Rick Perkins Award winner and Teacher of the Year, serves as Criminal Justice instructor at the Moultrie Veterans Parkway Campus. Selected by his colleagues in November 2024 for the competition, Nobles emerged as SRTC’s institutional winner and will advance to regional competition in February 2025, followed by state finals in Atlanta in April.

Nobles brings eighteen years of realworld expertise to the classroom from his career with the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he rose through the ranks as Chief Counselor, Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment, and Superintendent. The Technical College System of Georgia has recognized him as a Georgia Master Teacher, and he holds both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice from Albany State University.

Beyond the classroom, he leads the Greater Believers Community Education, Training, and Outreach Center and directs Colquitt-Moultrie Fishers of Men, addressing critical men’s health initiatives. His community engagement includes service on the United Way of Colquitt County board and active participation in local development initiatives.

As founding Pastor of Greater Believers Worship Center, Nobles ministers to a diverse congregation in Southwest Moultrie-Colquitt County. He lives locally with his wife Cathy of 28 years, their children Genesis and Ariel, and grandchild Braillyne Noel Keith.

The Ceremonial Mace

The ceremonial mace of Southern Regional Technical College is a symbolic representation of the College’s authority. The Mace was constructed in 2015 by Southern Regional Technical College students in the Carpentry program under the direction of Mr. Ken Robison, Carpentry Program Chair. The Mace is constructed of black walnut with a natural high gloss finish and the custom glass globe adorning the top of the Mace was created by the Florida State University (FSU) Master Craftsman. Ms. LaDonna Delk senior faculty member, carries the Mace in honor of her being our longest serving instructor.

Academic Regalia

Identification of the hood and robe as academic apparel is believed to have originated at the English universities of Oxford and Cambridge during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Use of the academic robe came to the United States in 1754. In 1895, a commission of university officials adopted a universal code of design and color for the academic garb. Members of the academic procession wear a variety of gowns, each relating to their level of educational achievement. The hood is the principal emblem of the nature and source of the degree held by each faculty or staff member. The colors in the hood lining are the colors of the school conferring their degree, while the color of the border indicates the scholarly field of the wearer. This evening, our students, faculty, and staff are wearing traditional academic regalia. Gowns and hoods are symbolic of the hours of study and efforts all have completed to achieve their degrees. Academic regalia link us to the traditions of our past and the hopes for our future.
