Live CATS ONE of the longest-running shows in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway - CATS - is coming to Rosebud. Three shows will be staged over the weekend 25-26 October at the Southern Peninsula Arts Centre. Audiences at the Red Hill-based Billy Lids Theatre Company production will be transported to a purr-fect evening at "The Jellicle Ball", with the junkyard set transformed into a night-time playground for cats of all shapes and sizes. There’ll be Rum Tum Tugger and Old Deuteronomy, Macavity - who is never at the scene of the crime - and magical Mr Mistoffelees. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer will cat around on stage, Growltiger will make his last stand, and the show-stopping Memory will be sung by Grizabella, the one-time glamour cat. “The fact that it is a youth production really makes it so much more impressive - many of these children will be the stars of tomorrow. I have been really blessed to have worked with such a great musical director, John Carlo Belotti, and such an amazing group of young people,” director/choreographer Billy-Jo Royle said. Plea for police to stay Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au THE anticipated deployment of muchneeded police from Rosebud to the new station at Somerville has “outraged” local residents, the organiser of a public meeting to protest the moves says. Resident Barry Irving will be joined by Police Association secretary Ron Iddles and his deputy, Bruce McKenzie, speaking at the meeting at 7pm, Wednesday 29 October, at the Rosebud Memorial Hall. He expects a big crowd to attend. “Residents and business owners in the Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento and Dromana areas are outraged that 30 specialist police officers may be re-

moved from stations in their towns to work out of the new Somerville station more than 40 kilometres away,” he said. He worries that the police will be from front-line units including highway patrol, criminal investigation and crime scene. “Locals are concerned that there are barely enough police officers to patrol and respond to calls for police service as it is, a problem which always gets worse during the summer months when holidaymakers swell the population here to more than 200,000. “These police officers provide a very important investigative and road trauma prevention role which will be lost to us if the proposed move goes ahead.

General duties police will also lose their important back-up response from these specialist units at busy times.” Mr Irving said he was concerned that there would be “just 11 additional police officers allocated to the southern peninsula during this busy time”. “We hope that as many business owners, community members and offduty police officers as possible will attend this important event so that we can collectively express our fears about a reduction in community safety on the southern peninsula and the loss of police expertise the community can ill-afford to lose, particularly during the summer months.” He said concerned locals could sign a petition to keep the “experienced, spe-

cialised police officers on the southern peninsula” by visiting facebook.com/ pages/Keep-Our-Police-on-the-Southern-Peninsula/1486196704974457 Peninsula Police Command last week would not specify which, or how many, police would be moved to Somerville. “Victoria Police is currently undertaking an organisational review involving several work units in Southern Metro Region Division 4 (Frankston and Mornington Peninsula PSAs),” superintendent Neil Paterson said. “I am unable to pre-empt the outcome of the review as it is not finalised and necessarily involves consultation with staff and unions as required by the current enterprise agreement.”

Police Association secretary Ron Iddles described the positioning of the new Somerville police station as a “political decision not based on demographics or population growth”. He said the site was chosen after lobbying by Hastings MP Neale Burgess. “As the sitting member he was entitled to ask for it to be built there,” Mr Iddles said. However, he said the station’s siting – away from population areas and summer hotspots of Rye and Rosebud – meant police were too far away from the action. “We are concerned about where police are going to come from to fill the station,” he said.
