Cycling on IT is just over a year since Joel Hawkins, left, died doing what he loved best - riding a bike. The 17-yearold from Mt Martha was killed when hit by vehicle in Nepean Highway, Dromana. While the circumstances of Joel’s death are about to be aired in court, his cycling colleagues have awarded a scholarship in his name to another youngster dedicated to racing on two wheels. “Scholarship honours cyclist’s memory”, Page 5
Groups unite against Sorrento ‘steps’ Liz Bell liz@mpnews.com.au THREE leading Peninsula conservation groups are calling for an immediate halt to construction of a “dangerous” and unsightly concrete-stepped seawall at Sorrento. Nepean Conservation Group president Ursula de Jong is furious work has begun on the “steps to nowhere”
structure and says there has been inadequate community consultation. She says the NCG, the Nepean Historical Society and the Port Phillip Conservation Council are opposed to the development “from environmental, historic, place sensitive and safety perspectives”. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) began work this week on the seawall structure, which will include a “meet-

DELWP acting regional director Chris Padovani says the steps will provide “a meeting point for people to comfortably sit at the water’s edge and enjoy themselves.” “The stepped seawall design will provide seating areas with views and create an ambient interface between the foreshore reserve and the water’s edge,” Mr Padovani said. She said the seawall may be the shire's “preferred option” but there was little evidence of any other support for it. “Nepean Conservation Group believes this stepped seawall is a poor solution for such an iconic historic coastal town as Sorrento, and requests a re-consideration.” Continued Page 9

Best Bites awards
On the job: Beach cleaners Karen Post and Brett Lamont with their dog Jack.
NOMINATIONS are open for food businesses to enter Mornington Peninsula Shire's Best Bites awards. The awards look at measures businesses have in place to provide safe and healthy food, use environmentally sustainable business practices and provide safe and accessible food premises. The mayor Cr Graham Pittock said the awards recognised the importance of the peninsula’s food industry. “There are more than 1200 registered food businesses on the peninsula that cater for thousands of customers each day and we encourage them to take part in our Best Bites awards," he said. Businesses can be nominated in the categories of aged care; bed and breakfast/ home-based retailer; cafe; restaurant; school canteen/child care; supermarket; take away; and innovation. Finalists are announced in September followed by the winners in April next year after judges' assessments from October - March. Nomination forms at food@ mornpen.vic.gov.au or call 1300 850 600.
THE beach patrol group 3941Rye aims to help save marine life by removing litter from the beaches and foreshore, as well as promoting litter awareness among members of the community and visitors to Rye. The group had a successful beach clean Saturday 2 July, with 23 volunteers and 11 children – as well as mascots Dixie and Jack. “We collected 286 drink containers and a total of 144kg of rubbish, organiser Julie Jame said. “3941RYE is the first beach patrol group on the Mornington Peninsula and we were pleased to be joined by a member of the second group: 3941Tootgarook Beach Patrol. “We know many residents collect rubbish on their walks and we would like them to join our volunteer groups or create their own beach patrol group. “That way, the totals of rubbish collected can be sent to Beach Patrol Australia enabling it to lobby governments on our behalf to have deposits on drink containers and fewer damaging products. The group’s next beach clean is 2pm, Saturday 6 August. Those attending should meet in the car park at Rye pier.

‘Car park an improvement’ - developer Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au ASPIRING Continental hotel developer Julian Gerner is “working very closely with Heritage Victoria and the council over the hotel’s preservation and restoration as an attraction for Sorrento. Mr Gerner was speaking at a hearing on 23 June to discuss his group’s proposed purchase of the hotel’s off-street car park at 23 Constitution Hill Rd. Acquisition of the $1.8 million block – bought by the council in 1968 and currently providing 18 car spaces – is a crucial factor in the Continental Development Group’s multi-million redevelopment of the 120-year-old property. The 900 square metre block was an informal gravel car park until 2003 when a special charge scheme was approved by Mornington Peninsula Shire for resurfacing as a car park. The scheme also included construction of the council car park off Morce Av, Sorrento. All commercial properties in the Sorrento business area contributed to the cost of construction of both car parks. The block’s sale – as well as a planning application to redevelop the hotel and relevant approvals from Heritage Victoria – are contentious matters raising hackles all over Sorrento. Mr Gerner told the meeting the car park would create access points off Constitution Hill Rd, improve traffic flows and create an extra seven car parking spaces, for a total of 25. He said buildings on the car park would be “kept very low level so as to not overdevelop the area and to protect aspects from Constitution Hill Rd
back to the hotel, including the aspect line from the residential development looking towards the ocean. Mr Gerner said the block would provide access to underground parking with 58 spaces for hotel guests and residents. The hotel is licensed for 920 patrons. It no longer offers short-term accommodation, with patrons parking in the public car parking area and street. The car park sale is being opposed by Nepean Historical Society and Nepean Conservation Group, whose Wayne Chamley said the shire had made “a terrible error in its handling of negotiations. “I would like to know the sale process, he said. “If the current value is $1.8 million, can he [Mr Gerner] put in a bid for $2 million? Mr Chamley said the application “needed to be contested [by the two groups] for the benefit of council officers into the future so they understand what the leniency is in these decisions about developments over council land. “It needs to be contested to clarify for stakeholders. Nepean Historical Society says selling public land to a private owner is “undesirable and unnecessary. President Joy Kitch said members were concerned about providing public parking on private land over the long term and that the sale of the land “without a long-term plan for parking is short sighted. “Even if covenants and restrictions as to the use of the land can be written into the terms of sale, we can take no comfort from past experience that these would continue to be enforced in the years to
come,â€? she said. The society is also against the sale of a public asset without public tendering. Council officers say selling the car park “would facilitate a better development outcome of the Continental Hotel and that the funds realised could be reinvested in other capital works projectsâ€?. Chamber of commerce vice-president Marc Clavin said an anonymous letter dropped under Sorrento traders’ doors overnight Wednesday was “given about two seconds’ consideration ‌ because it was unsigned and unnamedâ€?. The two-page letter, seemingly from a disgruntled trader, warns of “significant, detrimental impacts upon business activityâ€? caused by a loss of car parking after the hotel’s 920 guests take up all available spots in commercial areas. The writer warns that underground car parking spaces in the redeveloped hotel “will be grossly insufficientâ€? and that holiday renters, wedding guests staying overnight and business guests staying three or four days mid-week, will fill all vacant spaces in the town’s commercial area. Anticipating lost car parking spaces in the long term, Mr Chamley said: “It does not matter what is designated [in planning conditions] in the future: the fact is possession is 9/10ths of the law. “If the public do not know there are car parking spaces under the new building, then they will not use them and, eventually, it will be seen to be the possession of the hotel residents or day trippers.â€? Council officers will report to the next council meeting on issues raised at the hearing. The council expects to make a decision on the sale of the bock on 25 July.
MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire and Family Life have released an online directory of child and youth agencies and support organisations within the shire. The directory will be updated every six months, and includes links to wellbeing agencies and the National Health Service Directory. The directory includes information about resource providers and how to contact them, and is compatible with mobile phones. The funding for the project was $22,945, with the shire providing $14,211, and Family Life providing the remainder, plus a project officer to develop the site. www.mpchildandyouthdirectory.com.au

Scholarship honours cyclist’s memory Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Cycling Club has named a scholarship after popular member Joel Hawkins who was tragically killed while riding along Nepean Highway, Dromana, in June last year. Club president Bruce Trew said the under-19 scholarship would this year go to Sam Turner, 16, a young cyclist who embodied the same outstanding qualities and values as Joel Hawkins, and who is seen as a rising star in the 80-member club. The awarding of the scholarship followed a gathering of family and friends at the site of Joel’s “Ghost bike” memorial near Ponderosa Place on 18 June – one year after the fatality. They met to remember Hawkins and “share some stories about his journey”. A Rosebud man, 47, is scheduled to appear at a committal hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 18 July, on charges of culpable driving and driving in a manner dangerous causing death. Mr Trew said Joel, then aged 17, of Mt Martha, was “popular, a fantastic cyclist and really going places”. “He dreamed of being a professional cyclist and had made cycling his life.” Members of the club hope the bike left beside the road as a memorial would remain “for a long time” as a tribute to their former colleague. Joel’s father Les and mother Lisa regularly maintain the area. The scholarship will provide coaching, race entry fees, and upkeep for Turner, as well as providing personal development opportunities. The McCrae cyclist, in year 11 at Dromana Secondary College, said Joel was a friend who had inspired him as a rider. “I’ve been in the club since Christmas and it’s been really good,” he said. “The scholarship will open up doors for me and I very much appreciate it.” His brother Jet, 18, is also a keen cyclist and member of the Mornington club.
Mayor’s benefit ball THREE charities have been chosen to benefit from this year’s Mornington Peninsula Shire’s mayoral ball. The mayor Cr Graham Pittock has chosen to direct profits from the ball to Dromana Second Bite, The Van and Friends of Los Palos. Cr Pittock said the three organisations “do amazing work within our local community and abroad”. “These worthy organisations are run by volunteers to ease the pain and consequences of poverty.” The the black and white-themed ball will be held in the hall at the National Golf Club, Cape Schanck, with pre-dinner drinks and canapes followed by a three course meal and drinks, produced by executive chef Craig Gorton. Sarah Busuttill and the Phil Ceberano Band will entertain. The mayoral charity ball is on Friday 26 August at the National Golf Club, The Cups Drive, Cape Schanck. Tickets are $185 each at www.trybooking.com/MASA or call 5950 1428 by 12 August.

High Sreet shops urged to ‘go green for Dermot’ SHOPS in High St, Hastings, are being urged to use a green theme in their windows to mark the murder three years ago of Dermot O’Toole. A candle vigil will also be held on 12 July. Mr O’Toole was stabbed during a robbery of his High St jewellery shop by Gavin Perry, who was convicted and sentenced to 27 years’ jail. An appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions over the leniency of the sentence were dismissed by the Court of Appeal last week. The family wanted his sentence lengthened while Perry was seeking a reduction. Perry, who was on parole for previous armed robberies at the time of the 5 July 2013 attempted robbery of the Jewel Shed, also stabbed Mr O’Toole’s wife, Bridget. Mornington Peninsula Shire last week asked shops to decorate their windows in a green or Irish theme from Sunday 10 July to Sunday 17 July. Members of Mr O'Toole’s family will attend a candle vigil starting at 5pm Tuesday 12 July to quietly remember the events that ended with his death. The vigil will be held at O'Toole Walk, named in his memory, at 52 High St. Attendees are also being

The bright yellow excavator cannot be started without a key code but aluminium window protectors – said to cost $4000 – were ripped off and several windows smashed. The fire extinguisher was stolen.
The following day a hand-painted sign on the excavator warned: “When I find you, run”. A graffiti “tag” on a nearby container is believed to have been done at the time of the attack. Rosebud police are investigating. Acting Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO Alison Leighton said the contractor was building footpaths.
Tobacconists take a hit

THIEVES raided two Mornington Peninsula tobacconists last week, stealing about $40,000 in cigarettes and tobacco products. Detective Leading Senior Constable Nick Sweetman, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said about $20,000 in cigarettes, tobacco and cash were stolen from the Bentons Square, Mt Martha, tobacco outlet early Sunday morning 3 July. Two men are seen on CCTV wearing gloves, caps and hoodies and driving a red Commodore around 3am. A newsagent, cafe and fashion store were also targeted in the latenight-early-morning raid in which the thieves spent more than six hours inside the centre. In a separate raid, thieves stole $20,000 in cigarettes from a Rosebud
Plaza tobacconist in the early hours of Wednesday 6 July. Five men in a stolen BMW X5 station wagon used a grinder to cut their way through a locked door, smashing glass panels and lifting up the roller door to gain entry to the plaza at 3.26am. They then filled three large bags with cigarettes. The men also attempted to raid the Telstra and Optus stores but managed to steal only imitation phones. Detective Sergeant John Coburn, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said the getaway car was later seen driving at 200kph north along Peninsula Link but, because of the speeds involved, police did not engage in a pursuit. Anyone with information about the raids should call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
A MCCRAE panel beater’s workshop was broken into early Tuesday morning and a customer’s car stolen. The 2012 Kia Cerato was lowered from a hoist by the thief and reversed through the roller door at about 4am, causing extensive damage to the workshop. The car was then used in a ram-raid at the Chemist Warehouse, Mornington-Tyabb Rd, Mornington. Detective Sergeant John Coburn, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said a man was seen stealing four shopping baskets containing fragrances and perfumes ranging upwards in price from $60. He said the man was only in the store three or four minutes but managed to steal up to $2000 in stock. The damaged car was later found hidden behind trees on the beach car park at Cannons Creek.
Fire destroys house A BURNING log rolling out of a fireplace is the likely cause of a house fire in Tootgarook, early Wednesday morning. The weatherboard house in Main St was “fully involved” when 25 career and volunteer fire fighters on eight appliances from Rye, Rosebud, Boneo, and breathing apparatus from Bayswater, arrived at 2.47am. Operations officer Andrew Turner, of Mornington CFA, said a lounge room fire box door may have been left open when the four adults living at the house went to bed. The four managed to evacuate the recently renovated house suffering only minor smoke inhalation. Damage to the house was described as severe. The fire was brought under control at 3.25am.

Killers return to seals’ island home A POD of killer whales has caused excitement among wildlife watchers off Flinders and Phillip, although its arrival is probably not so welcome by the inhabitants of Seal Rocks. Known as the ocean’s apex predator, the killer whales, or orcas, were first seen by tour operator Wildlife Coast Cruises about 11am on 4 July. The Dolphin Research Institute’s David Donnelly said the news quickly spread with “eager whale watchers converging on the location, but you had to be quick as the pod was clearly on a mission”. “Shortly after arriving the killer whales quickly went about investigating the local Australian fur seal colony. It wasn’t long before onlookers were treated to the sight of the apex predators throwing prey - likely to be a seal - into the air, tail slapping and breaching.” Mr Donnelly said a photo taken by Robyn Raven of Phillip Island confirmed that one of the killer whales was “a very well-known individual affectionately known as Split Fin”. “Split Fin has been known to the east Australian photo identification catalogue since 2003,” he said. “Her very distinctive dorsal fin makes Split Fin easily recognisable at sea. The fin has a large vertical split through the centre, causing it to flop to the left. The cause of the disfiguration is believed to be from an interaction with a boat propeller.” Mr Donnelly said the killer whales moved off to the west about an hour later, “passing two humpback whales on the way”. Photographer Matt Burgess reported seeing the same killer whales

near West Head, Flinders. “You never know what the ocean will serve up. One minute I was shooting waves, the next 10-15 killer whales swam past,” he said. “I’ve never seen one before, it was amazing.” The pod was last seen swimming through the Mushroom Reef marine sanctuary toward Cape Schanck.
Mr Donnelly said the same pod of killer whales was identified near Phillip Island on 27 December 2015. “Killer whales are technically not whales, they are in fact the largest species of dolphin. They can be found in all of the world’s oceans from the equator to the polar ice caps.” Details: Facebook Killer Whales Australia

Geo-bands tracking visitors THEY might be small and light, but red-necked stints are no slouches when it comes to overseas travel, flying each year between Western Port and as far north as Siberia. The stints spend the summer months in Australia before leaving to breed in the northern hemisphere. This year Parks Victoria rangers and volunteers banded more than 250 rednecked stints at Yallock Creek with the Victorian Wader Study Group as a part of a long term program to track the birds. Banding involves attaching a unique number metal band and a lightweight geo-locator to the leg of a bird which helps researches track their journey once they are retrieved. “The Victorian Wader Study Group has been studying waders for over 20 years and their research is increasing our understanding of the birds and their needs linking Victoria to the rest of the flyway,” Parks Victoria ranger Thierry Rolland said. “The banding program seeks to locate the habitats of migratory birds and is a part of a wider conservation effort to protect their habitats which is of significance to Parks Victoria and other agencies around the world.” Mr Rolland said Western Port is recognised as a wetland of international significance under the international Ramsar Convention. There are agreements between Australia and other countries to protect migratory birds including the Japan-Australia, and China- Australia Migratory Bird Agreement. He said many parks in Western Port

like Yaringa Marine National Park have protected areas for birds to provide a safe space free of predators and people who may disturb them. In Western Port red-necked stints feed on small invertebrates found in mudflats. “Their conservation status is currently secured, making them luckier than most other migratory birds such as the orange bellied parrot which is currently endangered,” Mr Rolland said. “It is important to conserve the habitat of these birds. During their time in Australia they spend their
time finding all the food they need in the mudflats and seagrass beds in our parks. We understand that water quality, pollution, and introduced plant and animal species can deteriorate a healthy ecosystem. “Improving water quality in the creeks that flow into Yaringa Marine National Park is a critical part of our conservation efforts. The Watson’s Creek project is working with landowners and industries along the catchment to minimise their impact on the creek and water quality. This in turn will decrease sediment loads and
turbidity, providing favourable conditions for seagrass, a critical habitat in which the birds find their food. “Birds are a vital part of our ecosystem and their conservation is important to ensure we have healthy parks and healthy people, we need to have healthy, sustainable ecosystems.” For details on Yaringa Marine National Park or how to get involved with the Victoria Wader Study Group call Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or visit www.parks.vic.gov.au orwww.vwsg. org.au
Continued from Page 1 A submission to DELWP by the Port Phillip Conservation Council highlights the lack of disabled access, environmental insensitivity of the concrete design, and safety concerns. PPCC president Jenny Warfe says the plan “looks like something out of a Roman amphitheatre”. “It actually looks like the steps would lead into the water at high tide, and that's dangerous.” She is calling on works to stop and the plans revised. “It's certainly not too late to stop this so that we get something less dangerous and more in keeping with the beach environment,” she said. Frank Hindley, chair of the Nepean Historical Society's heritage and planning group, said the engineers had “gone mad with concrete”, and had put little thought into the end result. “We are not opposed to a seawall, but surely timber walling would be more in keeping with the area,” he said. Mr Hindley said a recent community meeting to unveil the plan was “not consultation”. Ms de Jong said NCG was not convinced of the necessity of the Sorrento West Beach Renourishment project, which included $200,000 for extra sand that “may not stay” on the beach. Ms De Jong says the concrete seawall is likely to attract graffiti, litter from visitors, bird droppings and skateboarders. “These are steps to nowhere”. The seawall construction is expected to be completed by October. Mornington Peninsula Shire did not respond to questions from The News before deadline.

Anger over O’Toole appeal rejection Cameron McCullough cameron@mpnews.com.au NEARLY three years after the brutal murder of Hastings jeweller, Dermot O’Toole, three justices of the Court of Appeal have dismissed an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions against the leniency of the jail sentence handed down to his murderer, Gavin Perry. Also dismissed was Perry’s application for leave to appeal the severity of his 27-year sentence. This leaves the sentences in place after the appeal hearing of 20 July last year, and an 11-month deliberation by the three justices. “We were very disappointed with the outcome”, Trent O’Toole, one of Dermot’s sons said. “The justices acknowledged it was a lenient sentence, but were unable to change it”. The issue that limted the justices had nothing to do with the severity of the crime, but rather the fact that the Department of Public Prosecution had decided to prosecute a “lesser” charge of statutory murder (also known as Murder 3A), as opposed to common law murder, which can carry a more severe sentence. During the initial appeal hearing, the justices asked counsel for the DPP why it had appealed the leniency of the sentence, after downgrading the charge in the initial trial from common law murder to the less serious statutory murder. “Pragmatism. To avoid a trial and to end up with a charge that carried the same maximum penalty,” replied the counsel.
Loving, and much loved: Dermot O’Toole’s murder has devastated his family and friends and left a lasting scar on the community.
The maximum penalty for both statutory and common law murder is life, and it appeared that the DPP had hoped the downgrade would not affect the sentence. It is an unwritten assumption in the legal fraternity that statutory murder is considered a lesser charge than common law murder as intent to kill does not have to be proven. In an apparent attempt to expedite justice for the O’Tooles and avoid the stress and turmoil of a trial on the family, the DPP has deprived them of the justice they deserve. At the appeal, the Director of Public Prosecutions asserted that the sentence imposed on Perry, who stabbed and killed Dermot O’Toole during an
armed robbery of his jewellery shop in Hastings, was manifestly inadequate. Perry had pleaded guilty to statutory murder and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on that charge. Perry also pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally causing injury and to armed robbery. He was sentenced to a total effective sentence of 27 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 23 years’ imprisonment. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed against the 20 year sentence for the offence of statutory murder, and against the total effective sentence of 27 years’ imprisonment. But the Court of Appeal dismissed the director’s appeal, noting that the
in this state have proceeded on the erroneous basis that the offence of statutory murder is a less serious form of murder than common law murder and should therefore attract sentences of a lesser order. The accepted (but erroneous) view has been that, under s 3A, the killing must be treated as unintentional and that, as a result, markedly lower sentences should be imposed than for common law murder,” said the judgement. This is little comfort to the O’Toole’s who have now endured three years of anguish trying to get justice for their father and husband. The only positive outcome is that, through their tenacity, the O’Tooles have affected a change to the law that will see future cases dealt with in a fairer manner. “There are three statutory murder cases with the DPP which were on hold awaiting the outcome of our appeal. It is pleasing to know that those murderers will now be sentenced more harshly,” Trent O’Toole said. “The main reason Perry received a lenient sentence was due to the inadequate handling of the case by the DPP and prosecution team. The DPP accepted Perry’s plea for statutory murder even though they acknowledged they could prove intent.” As for O’Toole family members, their crusade for justice is not at its end. Media appearances in the last few days on Channel Nine, Channel Seven, and 3AW have shown they are determined to continue to campaign for justice for Dermot.

sentence of 20 years’ jail for statutory murder was three years higher than any sentence previously imposed for that offence: “Although we consider that the sentence imposed on the charge of statutory murder failed to reflect adequately the degree of criminality of Perry’s conduct, the judge sentenced Perry by reference to current sentencing practices for this offence, as she was required to do,” said the Court of Appeal’s judgement. With the findings now handed down, the CoA has stated that sentencing practice for the offence of “statutory murder” needed to change to reflect the fact that it is not inherently less serious than the common law form of murder. “The fact that s 3A relieves the prosecution of the obligation to prove intent does not, however, render the offender’s intent irrelevant or evidence of intent inadmissible. The sentencing court must therefore consider what the material before the court reveals about the offender’s state of mind with respect to the act causing death,” said the CoA’s judgement. In Victoria, the offence of murder can be charged either under the common law or under s 3A. The two offences carry the same maximum penalty of life imprisonment. In contrast to statutory murder, common law murder requires proof of intention to kill or cause really serious injury. Until now, the CoA said, statutory murder has been viewed as less serious than common law murder. “A number of sentencing decisions

Bay ‘rescue’ is fuel for rivalry
Album launch before travel
Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au
MUSICIAN Steve Romig will launch his latest album Sticky Fingers Played Here. The album is a change of pace for Romig, who is well known for blues and roots music. It delivers soul riffs, with a splash of funk and blues “to add grit. Romig is embarking on an international publicity tour for the album in two weeks, and the launch in Mornington on Thursday will be his final appearance in Australia for a few months. “We are really happy to be launching the album on the peninsula among friends before I leave. Being able to support an amazing emerging female talent as well, is the cherry on top, Romig said referring to Felix Thorne, who is making her first live performance since signing with Michael Snelson of Peninsula-based Soul Management.
Heading off: Steve Romig will launch his new album at Mornington this week before heading overseas. He’ll be joined on stage by fellow singer songwriter, Felix Thorne. Picture: Supplied
Felix was the first artist Soul invited to its “all female label, Soul Sisters Artist Management. Romig describes Felix as a singer songwriter with a voice carrying “the power of a choir, and a brilliant pianist. Manager Snelson says she is “simply delightful and one of those rare young artists who make music magic. Felix will be recording her debut EP over the next few weeks. Romig will perform from 7pm on Thursday 14 July at Double G bar in Mornington. Entry is free and the album Sticky Fingers Played Here will be available at the launch or from 19 July at Steveromig.com Romig, of Tootgarook, turned up the
heat last week on Flinders MP Greg Hunt last week when he sang a protest song outside the MPs Hastings' office windows (“Note of ‘dischord’ outside MP’s office, The News 5/7/16). The Environment Minister’s staff quickly left and locked the office before he played a note, but not before putting in a call to the Australian Federal Police. Despite the apparent lack of audience, Romig continued his protest, singing his song Come My Children, before noticing a black car of undercover officers watching from close by. “They explained their presence was precautionary only and agreed their presence was probably overkill given the circumstances, he said.
VICTORIAN Marine Rescue Mornington president Tim Warner returned from a six-week holiday last weekend just in time for an emergency callout in the bay off Safety Beach. His crew quickly set out for an area 100 metres off the marina – only to find they were “rescuing the Safety Beach Coast Guard boat, which had run out of fuel. Now, anyone with an insight into the rivalry between two of the state’s peak marine rescue bodies will understand the sensitivity of that situation. “Yes it was a rather unusual call, Mr Warner said, stifling a grin. “We have a rather interesting relationship but it was all handled with good grace. “When we realised who they were we just treated it as a training run. Coast Guard commodore Mark Brookes said the incident was “not a rescue. “We’d had a motor change-over and the fuel gauges had not been calibrated correctly, so they showed we were full when we weren’t, he said. “These things happen from time to time. The two groups had scheduled a get together on Sunday afternoon to socialise and discuss the coming season’s activities.
Mr Warner said the VMR was the busiest rescue service in the state, with two boats on Port Phillip and one on Western Port all year. “We perform 235 police-activated rescues a year, he said. “And if you take out the quiet times – such as midwinter – we can be out on the bays six or seven times a weekend. Often VMR crews are called to rescue sick seals or penguins. “People look up marine rescue and our number comes up, Mr Warner said. “One weekend over summer we had two calls for sick seals at Mt Eliza and Sorrento. Mr Warner said boat users, or their worried families, should call 0419 233 999 as soon as they fear for their own or someone else’s safety. “If dad says he’s going fishing and will be back at 4pm, people should call us straight away if they don’t hear from him so we can start the search immediately, he said. “We would prefer to start an emergency search at 4pm rather than the family waiting until 9pm to call us and then having to start searching in the wet and cold. “We don’t mind if we find dad happily fishing. We treat false alarms as good training. Mr Warner has served the VMR for 37 years, including three terms as president.

Cobbers-in-arms make their way ‘home’ Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au PETER Munro feels he’s near the end of a campaign to have the names of two Sorrento boys killed in WWI placed on the Fromelles Commemorative Wall along with their 1300 comrades-in-arms. For the past two years the lives of 13 Sorrento men killed in action in that war has become “something of an obsession for the amateur historian. That search has now gone even deeper. “In my research I discovered a story concerning two of the soldiers killed at Fromelles with no known graves and I wanted to correct that long-standing oversight, Mr Munro, of Blairgowrie said last week. His concern is timely, as this month Australians commemorate the 100th anniversaries of the battles of Fromelles and Pozieres. Fromelles was Australia’s first major offensive on the Western Front. The catastrophic 24-hour debacle of 19, 20 July saw more than 5500 Australian soldiers killed, wounded or missing. Albert George Hibbert and William Christopher Brumby of Sorrento were among those killed. Lance Corporal Hibbert was one of four brothers who enlisted for active service. Private Brumby was born in England and, in order to find work, had come to Sorrento where he enlisted.
Although from different backgrounds, the pair had much in common. Both enlisted at Sorrento on 12 July 1915. Both inducted into the military at Broadmeadows training camp and attached to the 31st Battalion, C Company. They then embarked from Melbourne on the troop ship, HMAT Wandilla, bound for Suez. After further training, the men, who were tent mates, left Alexandria on the HMT Manitou arriving at Marseilles, France, on 25 June 1916. In early July, the 31st Battalion was deployed to northern France and stationed at the alliedheld village of Fleurbaix, not far from Fromelles, which was held by the Germans. In June 2014, Mr Munro visited the Western Front with details of burial and commemorative locations of the 13 Sorrento lads who had been killed in action. However, he and his French battlefield guide could not find the names of Hibbert and Brumby on the commemorative wall at Villers-Bretonneux, as stated in documents from the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. Mr Munro and his guide initially thought the names must have been removed from the Villers-Bretonneux memorial wall and inscribed on the Australian Memorial wall at VC Corner, Fromelles, more than 100 kilometres away. But, arriving there two hours later, they looked for the Brumby and Hibbert names in vain. The Australian War Memorial and Commonwealth War Graves Commission in the UK was notified and, after an email trail over four months – including letters to MPs and govern-

ment ministers – the names of Hibbert and Brumby were belatedly included on the commemorative wall at Fromelles where both had died in battle. Only those soldiers whose date of death was listed as 19 or 20 July were initially placed of the wall at VC Corner. Brumby and Hibbert were listed as “missing presumed dead on 21 July and so were overlooked. In mid-August 2014, Mr Munro received an email from the Office of Australian War Graves stating that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission would add the boys’ names, along with three others who perished at Fromelles, to an extra wall panel and that war records would be updated. In April last year, Mr Munro was told work had begun on inscriptions; in September he revisited the cemetery at VC Corner to place a wreath of red poppies and an Australian flag from the Sorrento and Portsea RSL near the names. The Sorrento ‘Cobbers in Arms’ had come “home to Fromelles. POSTSCRIPT: In November, a Hibbert family descendant submitted a DNA sample to compare its compatibility with that of a soldier at Pheasant Wood Cemetery. Could Lance Corporal Albert George Hibbert, perhaps buried in an unmarked grave, be given an identity in his final resting place? “It is a long shot. We await the outcome, Mr Munro said.

Key decision-maker’s lime burning heritage OBITUARY Kenneth Jack Spunner, 24 August 1927–18 June 2016, rabbit trapper, registered hairdresser, wool valuer, dairyman, wool grower, market gardener, shire councillor, real estate agent, land developer By Mike Hast KEN Spunner, the descendant of a 19th century Sorrento lime burner, rose to become head of the Mornington Peninsula’s peak planning body, was a two-time mayor of the Shire of Flinders, and played a significant role in the life of the southern peninsula and Rosebud in particular. Mr Spunner, who died of pneumonia at 88 last month, was a greatgrandson of Irish emigrants, John and Susan Spunner who arrived in the Port Phillip District in 1862. They settled at Rye, where John Spunner worked as a lime burner. By the early 1840s, lime burning had become the principle industry of the peninsula (ahead of grazing, cropping and fishing) as demand for mortar for brickwork soared in a rapidly growing Melbourne, given further impetus after gold was discovered in Victoria in 1851. In 1867 the Spunners took up land on the northwest corner of Limestone and Truemans roads. They sold it during a land boom and in 1870 moved to Sorrento where John Spunner burned lime for the Duffy family. He then became a land agent for Sir Charles Gavan Duffy and accepted an offer of land on his Monte Vista estate near the corner of Melbourne Rd and Back Beach Rd (now Ocean Beach Rd), which they named Hillholme. As Ken Spunner told Nepean Historical Society members during a talk in 1998: “They built a wattle and daub cottage, and it was here that the first Anglican church services were held. The freehold title was registered to Susan Spunner in May 1874. She was a prominent figure in the community and the local midwife.” They had seven children whose later marriages joined them with the founding families of Sorrento such as the Stringers, Croads, Erlandsens, and Eldreds. Susan died in 1899 and John died at Sorrento in 1922 at 87. Hillholme was inherited by Ken’s grandfather, John William Spunner, who was born at Sorrento in 1867 and died there in 1948 at 81. Ken’s grandmother, Fanny Elenor Eldred, was from a well-to-do English family. The Eldreds ran the Back Beach Coffee Palace, and Mrs Eldred was licensee of Sorrento Hotel. The couple

married in 1900 and had six children, including Ken’s father Lance in 1906. John Spunner was a “cab proprietor” operating horse-drawn vehicles that carried holidaymakers who had arrived aboard paddlesteamers running between Melbourne and Sorrento. He also leased Hillholme to tourists over summer, operated a dairy, and sold eggs and poultry produced on the property. Ken Spunner was born in 1927 and, as he told the historical society, his childhood was coloured by the 1930s Great Depression. “We ate a lot of rabbits and rabbit broth.” As a boy, he helped his father Lance (universally known as Lal) cut firewood using a cross-cut saw, and move soil for an orchard to part of the Hillholme property where Lal and his mother Doll built a house in the late 1930s. He picked beans for his uncle Frank, who had a vegetable run over summer. From a young age, Ken was a keen rabbit trapper and by the time he left Sorrento State School and went to Frankston High School, had amassed 100 pounds (equivalent to $8500 today) in his school State Savings Bank account from selling 4000 rabbits at sixpence each. Between leaving high school and starting work in Melbourne, he trapped foxes for a living. “Fox skins sold well in those days as they were
used by the RAAF to line flyers’ helmets. You would get up to 20 shillings [worth $85 today] for a skin, with an outstanding specimen like a beautiful big gold fox I once caught fetching 35 shillings.” During the World War II he worked in his father’s Sorrento barber shop, becoming a qualified hairdresser. Soldiers from Point Nepean would arrive en masse for a regulation short back and sides, and Ken, aged 15 or 16, would “cut hair on the clock like shearers do, one every three minutes”. After Frankston High, the only secondary school in the region, he was a wool valuer at Commonwealth Wool in North Melbourne and lived in Collins St. He met the love of his life, Gloria Parkinson, a legal secretary from Sydney who was visiting her parents, at a New Year’s Eve dance in Sorrento in 1948 and they married a year later in St John’s Anglican Church, Sorrento. They moved from Caulfield a year later when Ken took over Hillholme Dairy from his uncle, Norman Spunner, who had moved it from Sorrento to Boneo Rd. “Norman said we could pay for the cows out of the milk, which we did. We certainly had no money. This is how I started farming in Boneo,” Ken told the historical society. Ken and Gloria milked 50 cows twice a day at Nepean Park, part of
which is now Rosebud industrial estate and the second 18-hole golf course of Rosebud Country Club. On Saturday nights they rode to the Rosebud picture theatre on their bicycles, lighting the way with hurricane lamps hung on their handlebars. As well as producing milk, they grazed cattle; grew fine grade wool; grew peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, tomatoes and potatoes; and raised three daughters, Suzanne, Kay and Gill. In 1968 Ken was elected to Shire of Flinders council, and represented Bowen Riding (Whitecliffs to Boneo Rd) for eight years including two as shire president (mayor). For six of those years he was one of two Flinders councillors on the Western Port Regional Planning Authority, and was elected chairman in 1975 during a tumultuous time as state and local governments and conservationists argued over a proposed conservation plan for the shire. By this time Ken had become an estate agent. With his daughter Kay, they studied to become estate agents and founded K Spunner & Associates, a business they operated for 40 years. Kay now runs Kay Bishop Real Estate, Rosebud. In his 1998 talk, Ken said “I resigned rather reluctantly from council due to pressure from some sections of the Western Port community, which believed that I had a conflict of interest in that I had moved many amendments to the conservation plan ... and had chaired the appeals to that plan. This was prior to the due date of promulgation of the conservation plan. I need not have bothered as the Premier [Dick Hamer] postponed the date and the plan was exhibited for a further 12 months after which only minor amendments were made before it was adopted”. In 1998, Ken said some of his achievements on the council included opposing a plan to dam Main Creek for a water sports and fishing lake, instead instigating the sealing of the Cape Schanck–Flinders road on its present winding alignment – the S Bend as it was called – to create one of the best scenic drives on the peninsula. As shire president, he won state government funds for construction of Red Hill Recreation Reserve’s basketball courts and clubrooms, led the move to rezone land in Boneo Rd for Rosebud’s light industrial area, led rezoning of land for Rosebud Country Club’s second 18 golf course, convinced the council to support the Rye reclamation area and boat launch-
ing ramp project, supported rate relief for golf clubs, supported lifesaving clubs, and backed shire engineer Peter Parkinson’s push for Sorrento’s main street development. He persuaded the council to offload Back Beach Reserve (now part of Mornington Peninsula National Park) to the state Department of Conservation Forests and Lands. Along with Bill Green, he was a key figure in the preservation of Greens Bush, now part of the national park. Mr Spunner was a vigorous opponent of council amalgamations in 1994. He publicly declared: “The amalgamation ... with our neighbours Hastings and Mornington has been an unmitigated disaster. Local knowledge is no longer appropriate for councillors or staff, nor is there any desire to use it.” After leaving the council, he unsuccessfully stood as the National Party candidate in the state seat of Dromana (now Nepean) at the 1979 elections against sitting Liberal MP Roberts Dunstan, and Labor’s David Hassett. He was an honorary Justice of the Peace for nearly 40 years. In retirement, Ken Spunner enjoyed more time for reading – including the Financial Review every day – travel and spending time with his grandchildren. At his funeral in St John’s Church on 23 June, eldest daughter Suzanne Spunner said he was at his “happiest and most relaxed when children were around”. “He was a phenomenal grandfather. He set up informal scholarships for each grandchild because he believed so much in the value of higher education, an opportunity denied to him.” In April 2014, Ken and Gloria moved to Ti Tree Lodge, Rosebud West and soon after celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Gloria died in April 2015. Ken Spunner was a link between the early days of European settlement on the peninsula and the modern era. He grew up when people still foraged for tucker and later produced food as one of the region’s best farmers. He went from riding in horse-drawn carts to being known as “the Stirling Moss of Boneo Rd” as he drove at speed between his farms at Cape Schanck and Boneo several times each day. He trapped rabbits and foxes as a boy, and state politicians and bureaucrats as a man. He is survived by his sister Gloria Susie Wishart, daughters Suzanne, Kay and Gill and their partners, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Container port threat lost votes for Hunt Analysis of the results in the Flinders electorate has produced startling evidence that voters around Western Port are sick and tired MP Greg Hunt’s ongoing failure to reflect their views on the necessity to protect our beautiful bay from industrialisation by building a giant container Port at Hastings. While major issues such as health and education would have been on electors minds, an analysis of 15 booths bordering Western Port reveals that on first preferences, Mr Hunt’s primary vote dropped by a staggering average of 5.5 per cent, with San Remo at eight per cent and Bass and Rhyll the standouts at an amazing 11 per cent fall. His first preference primary vote is now a little over 51 per cent. The swing to Labor in Victoria was only about two per cent. It would therefore seem that without the Portsea silvertails, Flinders would indeed be a most marginal seat. Anti-port candidates such as the Greens Willissa Hogarth and ALP’s Carolyn Gleisner secured 37 per cent of first preferences, further reinforcing the 2014 Bass State election results where one in five primary votes were cast for opponents of the Hastings port development. As all leaders have stated since last Saturday’s election, “the people have spoken”. So when is Mr Hunt going to stop coming out with motherhood statements about protecting Western Port and actually take some concrete and visible action to do so? Doing his ministerial job and pledging to assess any Western Port port proposal under federal law would do for starters, but I fear there’s as much chance of that as me catching a trophy size snapper every time I go fishing this coming season. Kevin Chambers, The Gurdies
Budget beyond repair Well, well, well, here we are without a government. The one thing we can depend on is that whoever rules they will not fix the budget problem, it would be impossible with all the bribes issued during the campaign to get our votes. They will chip away at social services and education and health care and ignore the biggest opportunities to bring the budget into surplus: $12 billion in subsidies to the mining industry; $10 billion in tax revenues due to money laundering in tax havens by the corporations, the 60 richest Australians who pay little or no tax, the other top five per cent of income earners who pay little tax; and the excess perks and double dipping by our elected federal officials. And these do not even address the waste in ineffective spending programs. Tax cuts are not the answer: we need more revenue not less. Tax cuts only trickle down to rich lawyers, bankers and tax haven offshore accounts. Tax cuts do not trickle down to new jobs and revenue streams, they only trickle down to increase wealth to the wealthy. It all boils down to [governments being]
unwilling to tap into the greed and corruption of the corporate mafia and the top five per cent richest who actually control this country. My guess is that we can actually look to a downgrade of our S&P rating, which will cost us more to borrow money, and therefore increasing the debt even more. We are currently paying interest of $1 billion a month on our debt. Wow, $12 billion a year. And then, how about investing in industries that provide jobs of the future (renewable energy) rather than industries that are in their final death throngs (coal and mining)? Joe Lenzo, Safety Beach
Nothing changes Here we are again with the same people, the same goals, the same the same the same. We have no choice. We can’t vote for new parties [because] there are none, our system sees to that. The same people are too frightened to change their representatives or the media howls it down. Politicians stop being representatives of the people to become representatives of the rich and famous. One side spends all the taxes on any popular thing that’s in; the other side takes all the money off the poor workers and underprivileged and gives it to the well off. There’s nothing said by either side about housing, the homeless, the sick and those unable to cope with the never ending rises of taxes, goods and services – all we hear are rises in our utilities, rents, food, and anything else they can draw money out of. We are so used to this never ending take that we switch off. E M Taylor, McCrae
Down to earth result Amazing how the results of an election can bring you down to earth. I’ve always thought most Australians (in fact the world over) were not the brightest in matters political, but with the likes of Pauline Hanson I was certain only those permanent residents of Lah Lah Land would give her a tick, particularly with her policies of “corrupt” climate science, Islam, and wanting to ban the burqa. Wrong. I’ve yet to come across a Pauline aficionado, but if you happen to visit the Rye RSL ask for me at reception. I thought this fear, this secret city stuff, was all down to Tony Abbott. As for Princess Pauline (“I’d have rocks in my head to actually go back and do it again”) we can assume the rocks have long gone. The question is, what has replaced them? One wonders about our former prime minister John Howard and his belief in “the intelligence of the Australian people”? Then again Greg [Hunt] got back in; no surprises there. So much for my Arts Party. Cliff Ellen, Rye
Fracture unfixed I’m sure Monty Python must have written the script for Malcolm Turnbull’s reasoning to call
a double dissolution of our parliament. After a toxic election campaign by both old parties Australia has ended up with an even more fractured government than before the election. And still, both sides of the out of touch old parties are trying to convince us that all is well as long as they keep doing the same as they did for the last decades. Somebody once said that to keep doing the same thing over and over without getting a different outcome borders on insanity. So isn’t it time our old parties started listening to the ordinary folk and new ideas of alternative parties to start changing the fate of the planet to a more sustainable direction? Humanity’s future prospects are surely more important than the greed of a few corporations and super rich individuals. Rupert Steiner, Balnarring Beach
Tragic time for reef It is tragic that at a time when the Great Barrier Reef is at such a delicate stage, that the Australian government is unwilling to take notice of one of our most experienced and knowledgeable scientists. Professor Charlie Vern, formally chief scientist for the Institute of Marine Science, has worked on our and the world’s reefs for 40 years. He is a world expert on coral and marine life. During a recent radio interview he said that so long as the world continues to burn coal the barrier reef will continue to degrade. Changes in the El Nino around February this year saved the reef from serious destruction. Bleaching will depend on water temperature and clarity. Prof Vern said that giving [coalminer] Adani permission to pollute, millions of tonnes of CO2 will place Australia as one of the worst polluting countries of the world. He continued that [Flinders MP and Environment Minister] Greg Hunt had so much to answer for. The solution must be renewable energy immediately or the children of the future will have a disastrous time. Peter Strickland, Balnarring
Lockers make logic Having grown up in the United States I am familiar, as only a student can be, with the endless rows of boring grey lockers that line every American school hallway. I am thrilled therefore, that Rosebud Secondary College has transformed those practical but uninspiring lockers into visual invitations to reading. (“Novel approach encourages student reading”, The News 21/6/16). Absolutely brilliant. Keep it up RSC. Deborah Wildsmith, Dromana
Facts about Penbus It has been disappointing to see Penbus misinformation spun by the Andrews government. Doris Campbell from the Mornington Peninsula Residents and Ratepayers Association has jumped on the bandwagon while taking a political swipe against my federal colleague Greg Hunt MP, but without having any understanding about what was actually “saved (“Missed the bus”, Letters 28/6/16). Ministerial briefing notes I have received under FoI clearly show in that the Penbus “was provided on a no cost basis by the Commonwealth government in 2013 as a two-year pilot program”. The service was established utilising a $1.26 million federal grant and has been funded
by Mornington Peninsula Shire since the funds ran out in July 2015. There were never federal cuts to the Penbus service, its pilot funding simply ran out. PTV and the state government were supposed to have evaluated the pilot and, if successful, incorporated it into the PTV service structure. The service was successful and credit goes to the shire for saving the service while the state government dithered for nine months. While Labor and its cheer leaders claim to have saved the Penbus, they have actually underfunded it to the point where the new 887 service is neglecting both early and late services. This directly affects students from Rosebud and the southern peninsula so I am surprised that Ms Campbell was not aware of this fact before launching her political attack, neatly but futilely timed for the federal election. While funding for the 887 service is, again from the ministers own briefing papers, coming from “Labor’s $100 million plan for Victoria’s bus network”, it is a shame that the peninsula is again neglected by Labor, while the ministers own region of Bendigo is enjoying upgrade after upgrade to bus and train services. Martin Dixon, MP for Nepean
Model alternative If an established medical organisation could save human lives, animal lives and a considerable amount of money with one easy move, why wouldn’t it? That’s what PETA Australia has been asking for a while now as we’ve been urging the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to use sophisticated human-patient simulators in place of live pigs and sheep in surgical trauma training exercises. Surgeons attending RACS’ early management of severe trauma training courses are required to cut holes in the throats, chests and limbs of live pigs. Surgeons who have gone through the course (which previously also used dogs) have lamented that they were horrified that they were “killing a dog bit by bit” and that they felt “upset and angry that I had no other alternative than to participate in something that I felt was wrong”. There is a better way: PETA Australia has offered to supply free of charge popular TraumaMan simulators for surgeons to use. TraumaMan, already in use in most other countries and several sites in Australia, is designed specifically for such training and replicates a breathing, bleeding human torso, complete with realistic layers of skin and tissue, ribs and internal organs. The system is portable, affordable and reusable - unlike live animals. Studies show that because of the vast biological differences between species, doctors who learn life-saving surgical skills on TraumaMan are more proficient than those who cut up animals. Please visit PETA.org.au to sign a petition urging RACS to replace live animals with modern medical trauma training. Claire Fryer, campaigns coordinator, PETA Australia Letters to the editor can be sent to The News, PO Box 588, Hastings 3915 or emailed to: team@mpnews.com.au Letters should be kept to a maximum 300 words and include name, address and contact phone number for verification purposes.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Eclipse of the sun forecast in July Compiled by Melissa Walsh PHENOMENA of the Sky. What is called an annular or ring, like an eclipse of the sun, will occur on the morning of the 30th of July. It will commence at two minutes past eleven. Nearly 94 per cent of the sun’s disc will be covered by the dark body of the moon. To persons living on a slightly curved line extending down from the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia down through the neighborhood of Hopetoun and Colac in Victoria, crossing Bass Strait, near the Eastern end of King Island to Davenport and Hobart in Tasmania, it should be a splendid sight if the day is clear. To persons living a little east and west of this line it will appear as a partial eclipse. Had the moon been a little closer the earth, we would have had a total solar eclipse, one of the grandest and most impressive sights to be seen in nature. At the time of the eclipse the moon will be about 251,300 miles from the earth, which is very nearly her maximum distance. Owing to this the moon’s shadow will not reach the earth, but will fall short of its centre by approximately 16,300 miles. Accurate measurements have shown that the diameter of the moon is 2,170 miles, the diameter of the earth being 7,912 miles, and it follows that the earth is as large as 49 moons. It has been determined by careful watching that the moon travels at about three-fifths of a mile each sec-
ond and is kept in her orbit by the attraction of the earth, just as the earth is held in its orbit by the attraction of the sun. The earth travels round the sun at a velocity of 181 miles a second. Were this centrifugal force to be destroyed, she would begin to fall towards the earth and in four days twenty-one hours she would crash into the earth when travelling at about seven miles a second. It is thought by some that the moon originally became detached from the earth from where the Pacific Ocean now is. No traces of air or water have been discovered on her surface, which has a very rugged and broken appearance. Huge craters can be distinctly seen through a telescope, also mountains and plains. No traces of animal or vegetable life have been detected, and it is believed that not withstanding her beauty, she travels through space a dead world. *** THE many friends of Mr John E. Jones, Shire Secretary, will regret to hear that he is still confined to his room with a severe attack of influenza. *** A MEETING of committee and stall holders of the Mechanics Institute Allies’ Fair will be held on Tuesday next, 18th inst, at 3 p,m., at the Institute. Stall holders and assistants are specially requested to be present. *** THE annual meeting of the Frankston Branch of the Red Cross will be held in the Mechanics Institute on Wednes-
day evening next, July 19th, at 8 p.m., when the election of officers for the ensuing year will take place. A good attendance is requested. *** THE monthly meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrowers’ Horticultural and Agricultural Association will be held on Monday next, July 17th, at the Mechanics’ Institute, at 8 p.m., when the report of the Port Fairy conference ; cooperative movement by Mr Gregory and other business will be dealt with. *** A GRAND football match will be played on the local ground, on Saturday, 22nd July, between teams selected from the Brunswick A.N.A., and Naval Base and Langwarrin Camp combined. To make the day a success, a dance will probably be held in the evening, of which particulars will be given next issue. *** THE following is the balance sheet of the “ Wattles “ Club dance held on June 17, 1916, in aid of the Langwarrin Recreation Hall :—Receipts, Sale of tickets, £3, cash taken at door, £3 0s 6d; total. £6 0s 6d. Expenditure, rent of hall, £1 ; printing, 9s ; donation to Langwarrin Recreation Hall, £4 11s; postage, 6d ; total, £6 Os 6d. *** WELCOME to Soldiers. Frankston still retains its reputation for entertaining soldiers. On Saturday last about 200 sick and convalescent soldiers were entertained at the Mechanics’ Hall. This being the hundredth
trip of the kind it was made a special occasion. Lady Stanley, accompanied by Capt. Connant, A. D. C. Dr Edith Barratt, Dr Bird and Miss Robinson were among the party. The hall was crowded to its utmost capacity and the reading room, which had been arranged as a lounge had to he brought into requisition. Everything was a huge success from beginning to end and the soldiers and those who accompanied them did not stint their compliments and the remark was passed in more places than one, that it was the best time they had had since leaving England. The Wattles Club certainly know how to entertain soldiers and as plenty of time had been at their disposal to make arrangements, nothing was left undone that should have been done to make the afternoon the profound success it was. The day was not all that could be desired as far as weather was concerned, but was not wet enough to damp the ardour of the Wattles Club, who spent Friday evening and Saturday morning in preparing the hall etc. *** UNVEILING of the portrait of the late Mrs Hall - Dr Plowman in performing this ceremony at the State School on Arbor Day, said that it was peculiarly appropriate that the portrait was unveiled and presented to the Hastings State School on that day. A few friends of the late Mrs Hall thought that the best way of keeping the memory of Mrs Hall green
amongst them was by the presentation of her portrait to the school, and by hanging it upon the school wall. The late Mrs Hall had in the past been most active in promoting any movement having for its object the promotion of the good and welfare of Hastings. It might be remembered by only a few present but it was a fact, that many years ago Mrs Hall took a leading part in securing the establishment of a State School at Hastings, and in 1872 laid the foundation stone of a building which still constitutes a part of the existing school. Furthermore, Mrs. Watt, her daughter, had taught for years in the school, and was the present correspondent. Speaking of the personal qualities of the deceased, Dr Plowman said that he had had the privilege of having known her intimately for 20 years and the more he had seen of her the more he had admired her character, which was, in the fullest acceptation of the term, of a good and God fearing woman. She always possessed and preserved to the end the inestimable gift of charity. She never used an ungracious expression concerning anyone, and always strove to find extenuating circumstances for the most grievous offences. Her advanced years precluded of late any active part in local affairs, but the older members of those present would remember her good works. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 15 July, 1916

CHOCOLATE STARFISH with SWANEE & PALACE OF THE KING HIT THE HEIGHTS Chocolate Starfish, one of Australia’s most successful bands of the 1990s is back and sharing the stage with iconic rock singer Swanee & the hottest young rock band in the country Place of the King. Chocolate Starfish released two albums in the 90’s both smashing into the ARIA Top 10 and received gold and platinum sales awards. The band was also responsible for six Top 50 singles including the smash hits “You’re so vain” and “Mountain” (both ARIA Gold singles). Starfish was Australia’s hardest working band in the ‘90s playing more than 700 gigs between 1993 and 1997, once doing 22 nights in a row. In 1979 Swanee released the album “Into The Night”. His first commercial hit was in 1981 with his version of “If I Were A Carpenter” from the album “This Time Is Different” which featured two other hits, “Temporary Heartache” and “Lady What’s Your Name”. In 1987 he joined the “Party Boys” as lead singer where he had more hits with “He’s Gonna Step on You
Again” and then “Hold Your Head Up”. Swanee is a true Australian rock icon who continues to tour national to this day. Many doomsayers are writing rock’s obituary but if you think rock is dead, just check out Palace Of The King. The ‘freight train’ metaphor may be overused and stale. But you’d be hard-pressed to find one that is better suited to a band that has played more than 300 shows all around Australia, Europe and America and released a mountain of music at such a prolific rate, all within three years of striking their first chord together. The Sydney morning herald named them one of the top ten Australian bands you should be listening to in 2015. As a special bonus Palace of the King will also be backing Swanee at these shows. This young band is the real deal! This unmissable event will be heading to Chelsea Heights Hotel on 29th July. Get tickets at www.moshtix.com. au or call the venue on (03) 9773 4453.

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
A Force awakens within me By Stuart McCullough I WOULDN’T describe myself as a fanatic. At least, not compared to the guy a few doors down who drives the 1993 Subaru Legacy and has personalised ‘Star Wars’ number plates. (To be precise, I think it’s some voweldeprived variant. Good thing he’s not a fan of ‘The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants’ though.) It’s not as if I refer to ‘the Force’ in everyday conversation and I’ve never nominated ‘Jedi’ as my chosen religion on a Census form. Nor have I campaigned to have May the fourth recognised as an official public holiday. But, one way or another, Star Wars has been part of my life for almost forty years. I was awestruck. From the day I saw the first instalment at the Burwood Drive In through the windscreen of a Nissan E-20 (eat your heart out, Imax), I was smitten with the whole intergalactic fairytale. Never again would I be able to see a piece of cardboard tubing and not view it in terms of a potential lightsaber. Dressing gowns would forever be Jedi robes and not merely the highly flammable overlay you wore between bath time and crawling into bed. It changed the way in which my generation viewed the world. We enjoyed them for much longer than the two hours we spent in a darkened room at the local cinema, popcorn cooling at our fingertips and stray shards of choc-top spoiling our t-shirts. Those films were fodder for countless schoolyard discussions. We recited the dialogue, imitated the voices and delighted each other by
PAGE 32
recounting huge sections of the movies. Long before video, laser disc and DVD, we kept those films alive through living room re-enactments using figurines and whatever pots, pans or shoeboxes we deemed necessary to recreate the moment. These were both acts of artful invention and slavish mimicry. That was how we kept the stories close to us. Just glancing at my Primary School photos is enough to tell you everything you need to know about my devotion to Star Wars – throughout my formative educative years, I stuck with the classic ‘Skywalker’ haircut. Those who were first to see ‘Empire’ carried with them the weight of a cinematic secret that would remain unrivalled until ‘The Crying Game’. By the time
Southern Peninsula News 12 July 2016
‘Jedi’ rolled around, it was much more than just another film but a broader cultural event. Things were in such a state of turmoil after the second movie. We, as a planet, needed closure. But the final instalment came and went and then…nothing. The franchise whose slogan was ‘the saga continues’ had come to a semi-satisfying conclusion complete with a glow-inthe-dark Alec Guinness and a song performed by Ewoks that sounded like something one of the smaller countries might perform at Eurovision. Primary school had come to an end and so too had Star Wars. George Lucas, the visionary who had succeeded in taking the world’s imagination hostage next gave us ‘Howard the Duck’ which, in reality, was a colossal intergalactic
turkey. The next disturbance in the Force occurred sometime after I finished University, when the original films were remastered, returning to multiplexes everywhere. To watch them again was like travelling back in time. But then, in the late nineties, came news of three ‘prequels’. Better still, these new instalments were going to be filmed in Australia, leaving open the possibility that the Big Pineapple or Wobbies World might feature heavily in the battle scenes. But I didn’t go. I’d grown up and left Star Wars behind. As it happens, the reviews were less than kind. Jar Jar Binks did not so much polarise people as repel them outright; so much so that he might well have been a distant cousin of Howard the Duck.
It’s safe to say that when the guy a few doors down stuck his ‘Star Wars’ plates on his 1993 Subaru Legacy, he wasn’t thinking of Jar Jar Binks. But a funny thing happened. I watched as my nephews grew to love those early films just as I had. And whilst they too were immune to the charms of Jar Jar Binks, they were desperate to see each instalment. Eventually I succumbed, agreeing to take them to the third and final prequel as a result of a compelling review that claimed it wasn’t as bad as the other two. My eldest nephew dressed as Darth Vader for the occasion, which is a great way to ensure prompt service at kiosk. No one wants to keep the Lord of Darkness waiting for popcorn. No one. Despite this, I was nonplussed when I heard about the most recent instalments. I attended a screening both with misgivings and my nephews, but as the lights went down, something happened. From the first strain of the main theme, I was dragged back to a world I thought I’d long left behind. Despite myself, I enjoyed it immensely. Childhood, I think, is not just something you live but something you carry. And it can be a sweet, sweet thing to be transported back if only for a few hours. It’s not too late. Maybe there’s still time to get out the dressing gown and some cardboard tubing. Perhaps even convert an empty tissue box into the Millennium Falcon. The Force Awakens in me, at least for a little while. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

Redlegs provide a spark PENINSULA LEAGUE
By Toe Punt MT ELIZA has breathed some life into the MPNFL Peninsula Division competition with a comprehensive victory against Frankston YCW. The Redlegs put a stop to the 25game winning streak of the Stonecats, whose last loss coming into the clash was against Mornington in round seven last season. After defeating Mt Eliza by almost 100 points at Wooralla Drive just six weeks ago, it appeared that the Stonecats would go through the season undefeated. Just nine points separated the sides at the major interval before the visitors booted eight goals to two in the second hour to win 14.13 (97) to 7.8 (50). Frankston YCW went into the match without prime movers including Ryan Santon, Kyle Hutchison, Byron and Anthony Barry and Brenton Credlin, many of whom were representing the VCFL in the Australian championships. Lachy Wallace and David Bodley returned. Mt Eliza went into the match without star goal kicker Justin Van Unen, who has been asked by Essendon to play out the rest of the season in their reserves with a view of picking him up in the draft. Mt Eliza coach Troy Shannon said while he supported ‘JV’ trying to better himself by playing a higher grade of football, he conceded he “wasn’t happy with Essendon. “I’ve spoken with Essendon a couple of times and they said they would only require Justin to play a few games to get a look at him, Shannon said. “Then they pick him this week in a really important game for us, which went against the conversations we’d had. It just annoys me that they would say one thing and do another. “But don’t get me wrong, if the opportunity allows Justin to achieve his goals of playing at the top level, then I’m all for that, Shannon said. James Freeman, who is on Casey’s list, was outstanding once again for the Redlegs with six goals, while Tom Freeman was also dominant in his fifth club game for the year and first in the seniors. Matt Lillie was superb in the ruck against Ash Eames and Jay Neratzoglou was solid down back. In more good news for the Redlegs, Matt Neratzoglou booted a bag in the reserves as he makes his way back from injury. Craig Nankervis, Tony Lester and Sam Widdowson were the best of the Stonecats. The win for Mt Eliza elevated them to second place on the ladder after Pines went down to EdithvaleAspendale. Mark Meehan was again a star for the Eagles with six goals while Will Flavelle and Timmy Mannix were superb across four quarters with a couple of goals each. Craig Wray and Jack Doman were two of the better players on the ground and Brendan Neville continues his superb 2016 form. Beau Hendry was Pines’ best player and combined well in the middle with Chris Guganovic while Aaron Edwards and Guy Hendry booted three goals each. There’s no doubt that the
Shark attack: Mornington could not hold back Bonbeach who ran out 14 point winners. Picture: Scott Memery
Pythons missed Tim Bongetti. Bonbeach made it seven wins from its past eight games with a solid 11.10 (76) to 9.8 (62) victory against Mornington. While coach Steve Hughes believes his side is “still a way off the top three, he conceded that his team was building week after week. “We are a hard working team that just grinds out wins at the moment. I think there is still some daylight between the top teams and us, Hughes said.
“I still don’t think we are playing our best footy but individuals and the team are starting to play some more consistent footy. “Josh Bull is doing a great job with the reserves also and they are playing really well, so there’s competition. Shane McDonald was again superb for the Sharks with five goals while Matt Douglas, Jackson Sole and Chris Bryan were outstanding also. Joel and Warwick Miller were Mornington’s best. Karingal recorded a superb 18.11
(119) to 10.12 (72) victory over Chelsea on Saturday on a day that the 1996 premiership team celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Bulls opened the game with five goals to one with Harry Czarnecki on fire with three goals to set up the victory. Aaron Paxton, Leigh Poholke and Chris Hay all booted four goals each for the Bulls while Michael Burke was the best player on the ground. Zac Graham and Todd Gardiner were the best of the Gulls.
Seaford booted 11 goals to two in the opening term against Langwarrin and went on to win 17.12 (114) to 9.4 (58). It was one of Langwarrin’s worst defeats of the year, struggling with the confines of the Seaford Rd oval. Aaron Walton starred for the Tigers with six goals while Curtis Murfett and Nick Brand with four goals dominated. Nick Tuddenham and Zac Andrewartha were the best of the Kangas. Club legend Daniel Wehner played in the reserves.

SOUTHERN PENINSULA scoreboard
Eagles back in the hunt NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt SOMERVILLE is back in the MPNFL Nepean Division premiership race after a superb four quarter performance against Sorrento. Backs against the wall and staring down the barrel of missing out on finals had they lost, it was all on the line for the Eagles. Coach David ‘Budda’ Hirst put it on his players before the match that they needed to lift, especially some of the ‘big name’ players who had been horribly out of form. Those players responded. Ben Crowe was a match winner with five goals, Tim McGennis had more than 20 touches, Scott Simpson beat Nick Corp down back and Billy Rolfe was superb with three goals. Somerville’s favourite son Ben Sedgewick was moved forward and responded with three goals and Jedd Sutton, who has had a sensational season, was best afield with five goals. The Eagles dominated the opening quarter with 16 inside 50 metre entries to Sorrento’s seven, however they couldn’t convert their opportunities, leading by just six points at the first break despite having six more scoring shots. Somerville always had the answers though, thanks to the likes of Josh Westerman, Steve Crowe and Rowan Hogenbirk, who provided the grunt in the team. Youngsters Luke Burton, Josh McMahon and the best of all the kids, Luke Collie, were also cool under pressure. Sorrento continued to come at the Eagles until midway through the third quarter, when Somerville took full control. Sorrento’s lack of accountability when they didn’t have the ball was a concern, especially from the likes of Tyrren Head and skipper James Hallahan in defence. Both players are superb when the team is in possession of the footy but unaccountable and disrespectful of the opposition when they don’t have it. There are also some players who are arguably at the back end of their careers, especially on Saturday’s performance. The likes of Trevor Mattison, Brent Kenyon (who equalled the club record of 262 senior games), Benny McCormack and Guy Stringer have been ornaments to the club and the MPNFL but it’s a young man’s game and
It’s mine!: Despite the home ground advantage, Hastings went down by 26 points against Red Hill. Picture: Andrew Hurst
they are only just holding on. Leigh Treeby could be in the same boat. He was bullied and beaten on Saturday and didn’t respond, even against some of Somerville’s youngsters who got in his face. Luke Tapscott doesn’t do enough for long enough. His spurts of brilliance are breathtaking but they are few and far between. Nick Corp is electric but another who can’t seem to find another gear when he is being beaten. Nick
Marsten was another who disappointed. Ryan Potter, Danny Stephenson and Jarryd Ferguson were Sorrento’s best – they played like their life depended on winning. Generally, Sorrento has had it too good for too long, however with the likes of Jon Croad, Troy Schwarze, Leigh Poholke, Myles Pitt and Daniel Grant no longer around, it means some deficiencies that were once “bandaided” are now being exposed.

Sorrento’s best is still good and for three and a half quarters on Saturday they were in with a sniff, however when things got tough, generally they went missing. Red Hill continues to amaze, smashing Hastings by 26 points, 16.9 (105) to 12.7 (79). The Hillmen were blown away in the first quarter, conceding six of the first seven goals before booting 15 to six after the first break.
Sudoku and crossword solutions
As a club, Red Hill should be very proud – they have a wonderful netball program, their Under 19s are on top of the ladder, their reserves are second after losing 20 players in the off season and their seniors continue to defy the odds and are sitting in third place. The Hillmen have no superstars in their side, when you consider some of the other teams in the competition and the money being spent to secure them. I would bet that Red Hill would be paying half as much money as the top spending teams in the competition. However, despite these facts, they continue to win games of football with a very even, balanced, hard working group. They play for one another and as coach Tony Blackford continues to say, they “play to their strengths”. “We understand that we don’t have big targets in attack and superstars of the competition,” Blackford said. “But what I’m really proud of is that we have a group that is prepared to listen, work hard, carry out instruction and play our brand of football. “That’s all I ask. We prepare well, we respect our opposition, and we do our best to play the way we want to play. We continue to prove that our best is good enough to beat anyone. “In saying that, it’s a tough competition and there are dangerous sides throughout it. If you’re not at your best, you’ll get beaten,” Blackford said. On Saturday, Harry Larwill and the slight Jono Ross booted four each while Benny Poole and Sean ‘Steve’ Marchetti were superb through the middle of the ground. Jonah Siversen was the best player on the ground. Seamus Thompson played his 100th senior game after starting his career at the age of 29. What a great competitor. Nick Gray was named Hastings’ best, while Luke Hewitt and Matt Clifford were outstanding early. Rye kept its finals aspirations alive with a 15.18 (108) to 10.13 (73) victory over Pearcedale. The Demons booted 12 goals to eight after half time with Nathan Henley at his brilliant best with six goals and Jack Nisbet and Ryan Mullett working well together at the centre bounces and around the ground. Troy Jacobson is a star and he finished with four goals for the Dales while Kallum Searle’s good form continued.
