If you are an adult under 65 years of age, you will get a quadrivalent vaccine for $28.

If you’re 65 or over, you will receive a high-dose version of the vaccine ($62). There will be no out-of-pocket expense if you are covered by Medicare Part B (please present Medicare card) or a Medicare HMO accepted by FHN (there’s a list available at each location; covered persons MUST present the Medicare HMO card instead of the Medicare card for the billing process).

All immunizations not covered by Medicare or a Medicare HMO must be paid for by cash or check payable to FHN. The prices shown here are only available at these flu shot clinics; other rates may apply in FHN offices. No other insurance coverage can be accepted at these flu shot clinics, and per government regulations, no Medicaid cards can be accepted at these locations.

Because of federal guidelines to prevent identity theft, everyone must present a photo ID to receive an immunization. Children can only be immunized if a written prescription from a physician indicating dosage is presented.

Eight years ago, I met Sundus Rasheed, a young girl from Pakistan. I was her host for a weekend, thanks to the FAIVC, the Freeport Area International Visitors Council. I wrote about it back then and I just now came across the blog post that Sundus wrote when she returned home in October 2010.

It’s worth reading now. She titled it “Small Towns and Big Hearts in the Midwest.”

She wrote: “It has been less than a week since I came back from the U.S. It was three weeks long: coast-tocoast. The trip was an initiative of the U.S. State Department fort a group of young leaders from South Asia including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan as part of the International Visitors Leadership Program for Civic and Political Engagement.

On the itinerary were major cities like Washington D.C, San Francisco, Chicago and New Orleans. The schedule also said that we would visit a small city outside of Chicago - Freeport where we would learn more the election process in the US. Being a complete city slicker, I thought thank God it’s just two days in a sleepy, small town – one of which would be spent at home with a local family. But it turned out this small town offered me more than I had ever hoped for – friendship, joy and just some good old-fashioned fun.

I have to admit, I had the prettiest host (as the men in the group told me later) – the lovely Miss Kelly Epperson, a writer. We seemed to click instantly as I told her that one of my favorite American holidays were Halloween. And she knew just where to take me – but not before some shoe shopping! Oh yea! I knew Kelly was the one for me as we browsed through shelves, picked up bargains and then headed for The Pumpkin Patch.

As we drove around in Kelly’s super-cute, smart car we talked about our work, loves and lives.

And realized that there was not much of a difference between a big-city Pakistan and small-city America dweller. We were two girls on a mission – to have fun.

I loved The Pumpkin Patch! It had big pumpkins, small pumpkins, corn on the cob, candy, a petting zoo, llamas, a porcupine, kids, adults…and….wait for it…..a corn shooter and pumpkin launcher!

Kelly and I had a blast – literally, as we shot cob after cob, further and higher from what seemed to be a simple push and blast machine and launched small pumpkins from a slingshot. I should add that we missed the target every single time but what the hell, right? It was so much fun!

Exhausted by our corn and pumpkin blasting ways, we headed for dinner at The Irish Rose – a quaint little bar and restaurant in Rockford. The music, the food and the ambience were just perfect.

Seriously. Just perfect. Just the right number of people too. And a really cute Indian doctor, who just happened to be dining alone.

Kelly blew me away with her hospitality, kindness and general awesome-ness. She is beautiful and quite simply a joy to be around. We talked about boys, shoes, and food, Halloween, Paris, Facebook and much more. It seems that the only difference between people is quite simply that of ‘good’ and ‘notso-good’ perhaps. The good ones seem to cherish the same values no matter what part of the world and what time of life they are in – love and happiness.

Here’s hoping for more love, happiness, common ground and most importantly joy between countries and people.”

Recycling birthday cards: Can’t beat the perfect one

I forgot to give my husband his birthday card this year. I didn’t forget his birthday. That would be unforgivable. I just forgot the card.

Actually, I didn’t forget, I had it in the drawer at home, but we weren’t at home on his birthday.

So to my credit, I got him a card; I just didn’t give it to him on the right day.

A couple weeks later, I stumbled upon it in the drawer. It was a nice card, and I’d chosen it carefully. I’d read through at least half a dozen before finding the perfect one. Some cards can be so schmaltzy and sticky sweet. This one was genuine. I could have written the words myself. I wish I had, but that would have taken quite a bit more effort than finding one on the rack.

Savory Zucchini and Fontina Muffins

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Total time: 30 minutes Serves: 12 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup Filippo Berio Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, divided 1/3 cup Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 egg 1 cup shredded zucchini 2 green onions, finely chopped

12 cubes (1/2 inch each) fontina cheese Heat oven to 400 F. Line 12-cup muffin pan with large paper liners.

In large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. In separate bowl, whisk 1/4 cup pesto, olive oil, milk, sugar and egg; stir into flour mixture until moistened. Fold in zucchini and green onions.

Divide half the batter evenly among muffin cups; place cube of fontina on top of batter. Top each with 1 teaspoon remaining pesto; top with remaining batter.

Bake 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and top of muffin springs back when pressed lightly. Let cool slightly; serve warm.

Tip: To make extra savory, add 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon.

Heat oven to 400 F. Halve spaghetti squash lengthwise and scrape out seeds; drizzle cut sides with 1 tablespoon olive oil and season with 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Bake, cut sides down, on parchment paper-lined baking sheet 45-50 minutes, or until tender. Let cool slightly.

Using fork, scrape strands of squash into bowl; reserve squash shells.

In skillet, heat remaining oil over mediumhigh heat; cook chicken, onion and remaining salt and pepper about 5 minutes, or until chicken is browned. Stir in pesto; bring to simmer. Cook about 5 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through. Stir in cherry tomatoes; cook about 1 minute, or until slightly softened.

Toss spaghetti squash with chicken mixture; divide among reserved squash shells. Top with mozzarella cheese; broil 1-2 minutes, or until cheese melts. Sprinkle with chopped basil.

Tip: For a more savory dish, add chopped black olives or jarred artichokes, if desired.

Tomato and Tortellini Soup

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes Total time: 45 minutes Serves: 4-6 2 tablespoons Filippo Berio Olive Oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 carrot, diced 1 stalk celery, diced 1/2 cup Filippo Berio Tomato & Ricotta Pesto 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon oregano pinch of chili pepper flakes 1 can (28 ounces) whole Italian-style tomatoes 4 cups reduced sodium chicken broth

3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 package (12 ounces) fresh cheese tortellini 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley grated Parmesan cheese, for serving In large saucepan over medium heat, heat oil; cook onion, garlic, carrot and celery about 5 minutes, or until softened. Add pesto, basil, oregano and chili flakes; cook 1 minute. Add tomatoes, chicken broth, salt and pepper; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer about 20 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

In blender or using immersion blender, puree tomato mixture; return to pan and bring to simmer.

Add tortellini; cook 8-10 minutes, or until tender.

Sprinkle with parsley and Parmesan.

Tip: Dried basil can be substituted for 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil, if desired.
