Fishing derby champion

The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department held its 2020 Free Fall Fishing Derby on Saturday at North Terrace Park. Children brought their own bait and tackle and tried to catch as many fish as possible from the park’s pond between 9 a.m. and noon. The event normally takes place in June but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prizes were awarded in three age groups—7 and under, 8-11 and 12-15. Prizes included tackle and gift certificates good toward purchases from the parks and recreation department. Reyn Nevarez, who caught 21 fish, won first-place honors in the 7-and-under level. Alex Perez, who caught 17 fish, claimed first in the 12-15 age group. Bryce Raffen (pictured) caught the most fish of any of the participants in the event. The 11-year-old from Villa Park caught 38 fish to claim first place in the 8-11 division. Bryce is a sixth-grader at St. Pius X School in Lombard.

Long-time Villa Park resident turns 100

It was a bright sunny day on Friday, Sept. 18, when Margaret Wichser got a big surprise upon her return from the beauty shop.

Awaiting her was State Rep. Deb Conroy with a big bouquet of flowers and a certificate signed by House Speaker Mike Madigan and Clerk of the House John W. Hollman.

The certificate offered recognition of her 100th birthday milestone and a celebration of “a century of living life right and a happy addition to fond memories of birthdays past.”

Her children Tom Wichser and Janie Eliasek were on-hand for the celebration as well. Margaret also has a granddaughter who was unable to attend.

Margaret’s husband worked for Pillsbury in Minneapolis but was then transferred to the Chicago area in 1962. He and Margaret found a vacant lot in Villa Park right on a corner that they just loved so they built their home there. Many homes were going up in the neighborhood that surrounded Lufkin Park at that time.

“There were always children on our block and there still are,” Margaret said. “The corner by our house was a bus stop and I’d watch 15 or 20 children board the bus every morning and really enjoyed that. I love being around young children and I still do.”

After teaching in Minneapolis, Margaret brought her transcript to Proviso West High School. She walked in and set it down in front of an office person and asked if they needed a home economics teacher.

She was then sent to speak with the principal and after that, the superintendent and Margaret was hired on the spot.

For 28 years, she taught Advanced Clothing at Proviso West. She would bring in big pattern books from the stores so the students could choose what they’d like to make. Then the students went shopping for fabric with their parents.

“There were so many fabrics available in the 1960s and 1970s,” Margaret said. “If you went into a store, there were rows and rows of beautiful bolts of fabric. It’s just not like

“I wanted to give him one of mine and the doctors said I could, but he wouldn’t hear of it,” Margaret said.

ways mown her own lawn until just a few years ago but she still clears her own driveway with her snowblower – she likes it!

“As long as I can hang on to the handles, it’s really a lot of fun.”

Under Margaret’s direction, the students made winter coats, their own prom dresses and two of them even made wedding dresses.

“One girl spent $75 on fabric to make her winter coat,” Margaret recalled. “That seemed like a lot of money to her. Then I went to Lord & Taylor [department store] and found a coat of the exact same fabric – but not as well lined, just not made nearly as well, or nearly as detailed – and that coat was for sale for $875. That made the young girl feel a lot better!”

Teaching for those 28 years at Proviso, Margaret said she was always on her feet.

“I never sat down, I was always up and helping the students,” she said.

“Nowadays, they say keep track of how many steps you take each day. I often wonder how many steps I took in a day back then.”

Being on her feet so much and staying active is what Margaret attributes to her long life. She retired

Villa Park’s Community Pride Commission presented its 2020 Community Spirit Award to 10-yearold Blake Kooima on Friday afternoon. The commission presented the award to the young Villa Park resident outside of Hano Henry Gentlemen’s Barber Shop, located at 1 E. Park Blvd., at the southeast corner of Park Boulevard and Ardmore Avenue.

Blake, a fourth-grader at Timothy Christian School in Elmhurst, received the honor for his generosity to the barber shop while it was closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alex Hano, whose middle name is Henry, opened Hano Henry Gentlemen’s Barber Shop in 2017. For the last couple of years, Blake has been

Blake, who didn’t charge a set price for the grabbers, made a little over $1,000 from the initial round of sales. He donated all of that money to Hano. Blake then made some more grabbers, which generated some more sales. He donated the ad-

The commission presented its 2020 Community Spirit Award to Blake for his fundraising efforts to help his local barber shop while it was closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Blake is a regular customer of Hano Henry’s Gentlemen’s Barber Shop, located at 1 E. Park Blvd. Alex Hano, the owner of the business, has been cutting Blake’s hair for the last couple of years. When the barber shop closed earlier this year, Blake raised funds for the business by making and selling wooden oven grabbers. Blake’s grandfather, George Kooima, helped him make the oven grabbers. Blake’s mother, Katie Kooima, helped to spread the word to the community about the sale. She also helped Blake deliver the grabbers to their buyers. Blake made and sold about 70 oven grabbers this year. He took in about $1,360, all of which he donated to Hano. “He wanted to donate the money to make sure we didn’t close down,” said Hano, who opened the barber shop in 2017. The business, which was closed for about three months because of the pandemic, reopened in June. “As long as I cut his hair, I’m doing it for free,” said Hano in discussing his appreciation of Blake’s kind gesture. Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 300 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, invites veterans and their families, along with firstresponders, to its prayer group, called Growing in Prayer.

Each Wednesday, the prayer group will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the church will offer meetings of a support group called Operation Barnabas.

The meetings will feature Dr. Stephen Boudro, a veteran from the Vietnam War. Coffee will be provided. In addition to meeting Dr. Boudro, participants will meet Danya Vanzura-Rogers, the wife of Trinity Lutheran Pastor Rob Rogers. Mrs. Rogers is a Navy mom who understands the stresses of having a child serve in the military.

“While I was shut down, his mom messaged me and asked if it would be okay if he donated the earnings to me,” said Hano after Friday’s presentation. “He wanted to donate the money to make sure we didn’t close down. In my mind, even if he sold one of them, he would get free haircuts for the rest of his life. He sold more than a few of them.”

Hano stated he was moved by the kind and unexpected gesture from a child, who turned 10 in July.

“That thought, coming from such a young kid, I don’t know what to say,” said Hano. “As long as I cut his hair, I’m doing it for free.”

Hano added that business at his shop has been solid since the June reopening.

“It’s been great,” he said. “We make sure all the seats are spaced far apart. We disinfect after every client, and we always wear masks. As long as we’re open, we’ll do whatever we have to do.”

Hano, who is from Elk Grove, explained what attracted him to open his business in Villa Park.

“I have family and friends who live around here,” said Hano, who joined Blake to appear on FOX 32 Chicago last week to discuss Blake’s generous act. “I fell in love with this corner [at Park and Ardmore]. This little shop supports my whole family. The support from the village has been huge. They support local businesses, and that’s awesome.”

I shudder to think where this country is going to be within the next 10 or 20 years. Hopefully there will be a viable third political party by then because I believe fringe elements have taken over both the Republican and Democratic parties. Donald Trump is self-absorbed, rude and condescending, but I can name a few Democrats who are just self-absorbed, rude and condescending as he is. I’m not optimistic this country will ever come together and solve the problems facing us with the current two-party system.

People are too polarized. I often see just how polarized on Facebook and Twitter. It’s sad. *** Get ready for massive cheating from Democrats in the 2020 election.

They won’t say it publicly, but the cheaters believe they are justified.

After all, they view Trump as the second coming of the devil. *** I recently read about Ken Griffin.

He’s the richest person in Illinois, and he gave $20 million of his own money to a group dedicated to defeating the graduated tax amendment this November. Then there’s our governor, JB Pritzker. He donated $51.5 million of his own money to a committee that supports the graduated tax amendment. That’s a little over $70 million between them. Look at all the businesses that have closed, or are about to close, in Illinois because

of this pandemic. Why not make this $70 million or so available as grants to businesses that could really use it?

By the way, even if this amendment passes, billionaires have legal loopholes to avoid paying more taxes. *** I laughed out loud at the article by Sen. Tom Cullerton urging people to apply to be snow plow drivers. Really. He is under indictment. Shouldn’t he be writing his Senate resignation letter? *** Why does the Villa Park Village Board continue to extend its state of emergency because of the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s almost a joke at this point. Why don’t they just declare a permanent state of emergency until the end of time? *** What a contrast. Sean Casten supports BLM and Jeannie Ives calls for law and order. The choice is clear, people. What environment do you want your kids to grow up in? *** About the flashing yellow lights at the Prairie and Great Western crossings. Leave them alone! Trail users have stop signs requiring them to stop. As in wait until it’s safe to cross without interrupting or impeding oncoming traffic, same as if you were in a car. As such, the flashing yellow lights are not needed because the courteous trail user will cross and not interfere with the vehicular traffic, as is legally required. Doing so will keep said trail user from becoming an Involuntary Speed Bump.

(InvoSpeB in military jargon.) If anything, the flashing yellow lights should face the trail users. Whose parents taught them that it’s okay to cross a street anytime because the cars will stop? An InvoSpeb, that’s who! What bicyclist thinks a driver can even get on the brake in the time it takes them to come out from behind a bunch of trees and cross 15 feet of open space before entering the driver’s lane of traffic? An InvoSpeb, that’s who. And when a driver stops to let people cross, even though the driver has the right of way, what is the confusion creating? InvoSpebs, that’s who. Still, watch out for InvoSpeb wannabes. They’re idiots! *** I’m not a fan of Trump but cannot stomach voting for Biden and the Democrats who stand by and watch cities be looted and burned down by their supporters. We need law and order. I don’t want my family at home living in fear, afraid to go out and have a confrontation with these groups. They are attacking people in restaurants and malls. This has got to

4 Fox News confirmed the story that Trump called veterans “suckers and losers”. Any and every veteran, and their families, reading this or hearing this story should be appalled and certainly want this man removed as our “president.” I don’t care what political party you may side with, our veterans signed up to give their lives that we might live free. Does this “president” know that he would have nothing without our vets? This needs to stop on Nov. 3. Please think about it. *** Joe Biden is now on record promoting the destruction of the suburbs in America. He will implement a plan to encourage housing developments and Section 8 housing in the suburbs. *** A reader mentioned in Speak Out that many teachers say they want to be in the classroom. Please know they don’t make those decisions. For some, it may be lip service, but there are many who would be back in that classroom today, if allowed. Please, don’t just make speculations. Go to the board meetings and see who is making the decisions. If administrators are in their schools as they should be, they would be making sure their teachers are accountable for continuing with equitable curriculum even during e-learning. Get involved. Go to the board meetings.

Speak up when it could count, not after the fact. *** In the Sept. 3 issue, someone wants us “to get back to the Bible” and thought the 10 Commandments should be taught in school; shaming people who are out of work through no fault of their own; and then following with many clueless questions.

I suggest since you don’t read current news reports perhaps you can start

reading “the good book” again. You missed the messages it advocates. *** So Nancy Pelosi can go get her hair done, Gretchen Whitmer doesn’t want a border wall but builds an electric fence around the Michigan governor’s residence for $1 million.

I guess we peasants have to follow rules while the elite Democrats do as they please. *** This “Mad-Again” (Madigan) thing is moving too slow. A review of ethics isn’t needed. What worked for Blago will work for Mr. Conflict-Of-Interest. It’s clear everybody is dragging their feet so “Mad-Again” can gerrymander the districts after the census results are out—again.

Of course, I have no confidence that anything will happen. He’ll get a slap on the wrist, then he’ll sue for pain and suffering. You’ll know him when you see him. He’ll be the one laughing on the way to the bank. *** Ever since Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, I’ve heard and seen all the accolades about her being a champion of women’s rights, being a liberal icon, etc. And she is both. What I’ve never understood about the Supreme Court is why any justice is labeled a liberal or a conservative at all, or why there is a liberal wing of the court and a conservative wing of the court. Isn’t each justice supposed to judge every case that comes before them based on the law and the Constitution, not a political ideology? *** OK, so Trump is crude and rude, which make anything he does seem bad. Perhaps his best selling points to consider for the coming election should be what he will not likely do, as compared to Biden. Trump will not raise taxes to fund a radical socialist agenda. He will not take away our guns and police, and leave us unprotected from the violent criminal conduct currently spreading from our cities. He will not allow illegals to

invade our borders and infiltrate our welfare system. He will not allow our traditional American culture, history and monuments to be destroyed.

He will not allow communist China to economically take over and own our country. He will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, which they would surely use. The choice in November will be between a bold blowhard and a sympathetic sissy. *** If this was a true pandemic, wouldn’t there be death all around us? Wouldn’t there be ambulances all over the place? Wouldn’t hospitals be filled? Instead, it’s just a bunch of tyrants closing businesses and schools, and ordering people to wear masks. *** If all lives matter, please wear a mask. *** In this country, do we have social chaos? Do we have political chaos?

Do we have economic chaos? The culture has changed. Christian values, traditions and terminologies that were once common knowledge have become a thing of the past. The typical Sunday call to salvation is sadly like listening to another language, for many people. From the Bible, 2 Chronicles, Chapter 7, Verse 14, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land. Also John 3:16, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to die for us that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” *** Villa Park calling. This is regarding to wearing face masks and distancing. One laundry does not have a sign requesting masks or distancing and an employee stated there is no sign; people know they should wear them. That is not true. Half of the people are not wearing them. Thank you.

The Village of Villa Park announced last week that Union Pacific was scheduled to begin temporary emergency repairs to the railroad crossing at Addison Road on Friday, Sept. 18. The photo shows a southbound view of the closed crossing on Sept. 19. The village stated last week that the crossing would be closed for approximately three days. According to the village, further construction at the site is expected to take place in November. Ardmore Avenue was the designated detour route for all traffic while the crossing at Addison Road was closed. Union Pacific is funding and completing the entire repair project. Over the past few days, many DuPage County voters have received a letter from Secretary of State Jesse White’s office, alerting them that they have not applied for a Vote by Mail ballot and they should contact the DuPage County Clerk’s office to complete their application. These letters have been sent to voters throughout Illinois.

The letters were part of the mandate of SB 1863, the election bill passed by the state legislature in May as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It requires election authorities, such as the DuPage County Clerk, to send a mail ballot application to every voter who has voted in any of the past three elections.

The law also stipulates that the Secretary of State shall send, by Sept. 15, 2020, a notice to any voter in Illinois who received an application for a mail ballot but, according to State Board of Elections records, has not yet applied.

However, the notices do not ac-

curately reflect the current status of Vote by Mail applications my office has received from DuPage County voters. Many voters who have applied for mail ballots, as well as voters who have no interest in voting by mail, have received these letters.

To those who have applied for mail ballots, I assure you that my office has been processing your applications and Vote by Mail ballots will be sent to DuPage County voters who have requested them beginning the week of Sept. 24 and should start arriving in homes the following week.

Voters can track their mail ballots at dupage.ballottrax.net/voter/.

And to those voters who do not wish to vote by mail, I assure you that this is not part of any effort to pressure anyone into voting by mail.

In-person early voting and Election Day polling places will be available as always to any voters who prefer to use those options.

The Villa Park Community Pride Commission joined the Villa Park Environmental Concerns Commission to hold the second Villa Park Spring Sweep event on Saturday morning. This year’s event was originally scheduled to take place in the spring, but it was postponed until Saturday because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Vehicles filled Home Avenue as people drove by to drop off a variety of items near Villa Park Village Hall. Higher education board looks at gender equity ‘We have a lot of work to do,’ board chair says

By Raymon Troncoso The Illinois Board of Higher Education is preparing a strategic plan to make higher education more equitable in the state, and they focused on gender disparities in higher learning at their regular meeting this week.

While the plan will be released for public scrutiny between December and March of next year, since August, the board has shared presentations on different forms of equity at its monthly meetings.

In a news release the day of their meeting Sept. 15, IBHE noted that

African American men are far less likely to be enrolled in an undergraduate education compared to women of the same race. The same holds true for Latino men, although undergraduate enrollment for Latino men and women has increased since 2013. Enrollment trends for Latinos, while not at the same level as white Illinoisans, have generally increased over the past decade and continue to improve.

In 2018—the most recent data available—27,262 black men were enrolled in community colleges or public or private universities compared to 48,397 black women that

same year. This is despite black men outnumbering black women in the state, 309,204 to 297,676.

Undergraduate enrollment among black Illinoisans of either gender has fallen sharply in the last decade.

For both groups, the change in enrollment from 2013 to 2018 was a decrease of around 30 percent. It was slightly higher for men (30.6 percent) than women (28.4 percent).

“This data is hard to look at, but we need to see it to know where higher education in Illinois needs to improve,” IBHE Executive Director Ginger Ostro said at the Sept. 15 meeting. “This new data, disaggre-

gated by gender, surprised us and gives us more information as we focus on how to pursue equity.”

Even though black women were more likely to earn a degree than Black men, they typically earn less money than a black man with the same level of education.

The board also shared data from 2013 to 2015 which showed that an African American female could expect to earn $36,332 one year after completing her degree, compared to $39,970 for an African American male. Three years after receiving a degree, the gap was even larger, with African American females

earning $42,793 on average compared to $49,119 for African American males with the same level of education.

Per the same data, a larger gap existed between white males and white females with the same level of education, although both groups made significantly more than their black counterparts. White women could expect to earn $39,541 one year out of college and $46,859 after three years, while a white man with the same level of education averaged $43,821 after one year and $55,623 after three years.

“When Gov. JB Pritzker appointed this board with a clear focus on closing equity gaps in Illinois higher education, we knew that we needed to start with an honest and sober look at all the data so that we could begin our strategic planning process with a clear understanding of where the system is falling short,” John Atkinson, IBHE chair, said.

“These data, along with our report last month, tell that difficult story. It remains clear that we have a lot of work to do.”

The strategic plan for increased equity will be released for public comment sometime next year before it is formally submitted to Pritzker’s office for approval.

After discussing racial disparities last month and gender-related disparities this month, IBHE will also discuss income and geographic disparities in future board meetings.

Warriors’ cross country teams battle Hinsdale South in conference dual meets Willowbrook’s girls and boys cross country teams ran against Hinsdale South in last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference dual meets at Katherine Legge Memorial Park in Hinsdale.

The Hornets defeated the Warriors 1941 in the girls race. Hinsdale South edged Willowbrook 24-31 in the boys contest.

Hinsdale South runners posted the top three finishes in the girls race.

Junior Lily Weder turned in the best finish for Willowbrook with a fourthplace showing. She completed the 2.8-mile race in 19 minutes, 54.2 seconds. Senior Melissa Martinez of the Warriors delivered a fifth-place time of 20:15.20. Freshman Sophia Gogol (20:58.20) added an eighth-place finish for Willowbrook. Senior Daylee Braden (21:26.20) and junior Madeline Barrington (21:34.40) rounded out the Warriors’ top five runners.

Senior Tyler King led the Willowbrook boys team in the meet against the Hornets. King finished the race in a second-place time of 15 minutes, 41 seconds. Senior Nick Leo (17:43) added a fifth-place time for the Warriors, while senior Thomas Florey (17:44)

finished sixth. Junior Damian Rocha (18:27) placed eighth for Willowbrook.

Senior Jake Murray (18:36) turned in a 10th-place finish for the Warriors.

In its previous meet, Willowbrook’s girls team edged Morton 27-29 in a conference dual meet at Morton on Sept. 11. Martinez led the Warriors with a second-place finish. She completed the 3.0-mile race in 19:18.23.

Weder (19:47.23) landed in third place, while Braden (20:30) and Gogol (20:31.08) earned fifth and sixth, respectively. Amelia Barrington, a sophomore, contributed an 11th-place time of 21:25 for the Warriors.

Several days before facing Hinsdale South, Willowbrook’s boys team dropped a 21-37 decision at Morton.

King led the Warriors in the conference dual meet. He finished the 3.0mile race in a second-place time of 15:41.64. Leo (17:06.08) provided a fifth-place effort for Willowbrook.

Sophomore Kevin Diedrich (17:45), Rocha (17:54) and sophomore Garrett Williams (18:00.27) finished ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively. Murray (18:04.6) placed 12th, while sophomore Sean Kling (18:11) wound up 13th.

Warriors post three victories in four days to move to 4-0 in conference play The Willowbrook girls tennis team improved its West Suburban Gold Conference dual-meet record to 4-0 with last week’s 6-1 home victory over Addison Trail. The Sept.

17 meet in Villa Park featured three singles matches and four doubles contests.

The Warriors opened their season with a 6-1 conference win over Proviso East on Sept. 3. The team’s meets during the week of Sept. 7 were washed out by rain. Willowbrook opened last week’s busy schedule with a 6-1 conference victory over Morton in Villa Park. Two days later, the Warriors earned a 6-1 conference win at Leyden. Willowbrook finished its successful week with the next day’s home win over the Blazers.

Junior Penelope DelValle earned a 6-0, 6-3 win for the Warriors in the No. 1 singles match against Addison Trail. DelValle also posted wins in the No. 1 singles match of the meets against Morton and Leyden.

She scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory against her Morton opponent and delivered a 6-3, 6-2 win in the contest against Leyden.

Willowbrook’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Elizabeth Martynenko and Victoria Zlatkova captured a 6-1, 6-2 win against Addison Trail.

senior twins Jamie and Jenna Schrader improved their season record to 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Addison Trail.

Senior Grace Tumilty teamed with junior Mackenzie Parente to give the Warriors a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 3 doubles match against the Blazers.

Juniors Izzy Manning and Brooke Vandergrift helped Willowbrook complete its sweep of the doubles matches against Addison Trail. Manning and Vandergrift earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 doubles match.

Willowbrook senior Grace Jones suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Addison Trail sophomore Mia Dravilas in the No. 2 singles match of the Sept. 17 dual meet.

Jones earned straight-set victories earlier in the week in her matches against Morton and Leyden.

Willowbrook sophomore Molly Brennan outlasted her Addison Trail opponent—senior Justine Bugante— in a third-set tiebreaker in the No. 3 singles match. Brennan earned a 6-3 win in the first set. Bugante prevailed 6-4 in the second set. Brennan edged Bugante 15-13 in the third-set tiebreaker.

The Warriors will play two dual meets against each of their six conference opponents this season. This week’s schedule includes a conference meet at Hinsdale South.

The Willowbrook boys golf team lost a West Suburban Gold Conference dual meet to Downers Grove South at Sugar Creek Golf Course on Sept. 15.

The visiting Mustangs beat the Warriors 147-160 in Villa Park. Willowbrook dropped to 2-1 in conference play and 2-3 overall with the loss.

Junior Dominic Faillo shot the low round of the meet for the Warriors by firing a six-over-par round of 38 on the nine-hole course. Senior Andrew Rugg shot a 40 for Willowbrook.

Senior John Donovan and junior Tommy Doyle both contributed rounds of 41 for the Warriors.

Willowbrook played a conference dual meet against Addison Trail on Saturday at Schaumburg Golf Club. The Blazers earned a 162-167 win over the Warriors in the battle between District 88 rivals. Rugg fired a nine-hole round of 40 to post Willowbrook’s best score of the day. Doyle shot a 41, while junior Max Hirsch posted a 42. Donovan carded a 44 to round out the Warriors’ team score.
