COVID-19 cases, related hospitalizations decrease in DuPage County Last week, COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations were headed in the right direction as decreases are reported across DuPage County.

Still, community transmission remains at a “High” level with a 7-day average of 145 new cases per 100,000 reported, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) encourages residents to continue following the mask guidance, maintain physical distancing, and get vaccinated at the earliest opportunity to prevent further community transmission.

“The decrease in COVID-19 case activity is encouraging and an early sign that the prevention actions we are taking are working,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “I want to thank the municipalities, businesses, schools, community organizations, and residents who have done their part, including the more than 500,000 residents who have been fully vaccinated and all those who continue wearing a mask in indoor public settings. Our message now is for everyone to keep working together to help our community emerge from this pandemic.”

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, DuPage County ranks 218th out of 3,283 counties, which is in the top 10 percent among U.S. counties with residents fully vaccinated. Currently, 88 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully

vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 85 percent are fully vaccinated. However, among 12 to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 77 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 58 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Currently, people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended to receive a third dose of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Those who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider.

Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be given 28 days after receiving the second dose.

DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

Although booster shots are expected to begin this fall, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must first authorize a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) must issue booster dose recommendations based on the evidence presented.

The FDA scheduled a meeting with its vaccine advisers Sept.

17 to discuss booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. As more information becomes available, DCHD will share additional updates.

U.S. News ranks Elmhurst University’s nursing program among best in nation this year, to No. 146, on U.S. News’ rankings of the country’s Best Graduate Schools. The graduate nursing program ranks sixth in Illinois, again behind much larger institutions such as the University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University.

Elmhurst University’s undergraduate nursing program ranks among the best in the nation, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

Published on Sept. 13, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges for 2022 announced its first-ever rankings of bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs. Of 694 top nursing programs across the country, Elmhurst’s ranks 288th, with the very top spots occupied by far larger, research-based institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Among Illinois schools, Elmhurst ranks sixth. The rankings are based on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members of nursing schools and departments, and institutions around the country.

What’s the story with recycling in Villa Park?

In a quest to answer the trash collection concerns of residents, the Villa Park Environmental Concerns Commission (ECC) invited George Strom, Vice President of Municipal Services for Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), to a meeting on July 23. Lakeshore Recycling Systems is now Villa Park’s contracted company for collection of household waste after Roy Strom Refuse Removal Service, Inc. was acquired by LRS early in 2021.

The ECC was encouraged to hear of the strong commitment Mr. Strom and LRS have for looking at the future as trash collection happens today. Several key issues were discussed and the ECC members hope this information will reassure residents that LRS is working to correctly handle recycling, landfill materials, and composting programs as it utilizes its sorting facility in Maywood and Forest View and has purchased its own landfill. This purchase allows the company to manage waste according to its goals instead of those of a larger entity. Members of the ECC have toured the sorting facilities to learn more about the recycling process and LRS plans for the future.

LRS drivers are trained to presort materials at the curb and are reminded daily that the orange Simple Recycling bags used in Villa Park are not trash. Three cameras on the trucks assist in the monitoring of the process at the curb to ensure that materials are separated correctly. Commingled recyclables will be sorted at either Maywood or the Heartland facility located in Forest View.

this situation has caused numerous fires in collection stations. Residents are reminded that alkaline batteries can be taken for recycling to the Villa Park Public Works building on Home Avenue, near Villa Park Village Hall.

• Plastic bags should only be recycled at appropriate receptacles such as those found at grocery stores.

Plastic bags that are placed in your recycling bin cause those items to be landfilled.

• If residents do not have a compost bin, food waste can be put in the yard waste bags and it will be composted with that material.

• Donating household items instead of trashing them is encouraged.

There are many organizations eager for the items often found along the curb on trash day.

• The orange Simple Recycling Bags (put out on the normal trash day) are another option for recycling clothing, linens, etc.

• LRS will recycle waxed milk cartons and other aseptic containers.

Aseptic containers are made of layered paper, aluminum foil and plastic.

• Residents are asked to avoid putting small pieces of paper in their household recycling bins because they also cause issues in the separation process. Receptacles in Villa Park in the St. Alexander Parish parking lot (300 S. Cornell Ave.)

Glowiak-Hilton supports bill to offer relief to businesses As businesses get creative to find fy, businesses must demonstrate finanways to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, a law sponsored by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) will offer a solution to help ease financial burdens.

“Local governments are capable of deciding what is best for the local business community’s financial future,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“To provide support where it’s needed most, this law allows units of local government to determine where waiving fees would be beneficial to a struggling business.”

The law creates an option for counties and municipalities to waive licensing, permitting or registration fees for local businesses and services. To quali-

Mr. Strom reassures residents that LRS has various programs to address a greener world. The company is currently the largest construction and demolition recycler in Illinois, with 75 percent of the material being recycled. LRS is looking at purchasing

the first electric powered truck in Illinois. Additionally, LRS is considering a purchase of recycling bins that are made from a percentage of curbside recycled products. Approximately 2.5 million pounds of curbside plastics have been turned into carts. All plastics collected by LRS for recycling are sold to domestic companies.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team continued its undefeated season by reeling off three victories last week to improve its overall record to 16-0.

The Warriors began their week with a 25-8, 25-9 West Suburban Gold Conference win over Morton in Villa Park on Sept. 14. One day later, Willowbrook pounded Proviso West 25-6, 25-10 in a non-conference contest. The Warriors completed their week with a 25-18, 25-7 win at Riverside Brookfield in a non-conference battle on Sept. 16.

Willowbrook freshman Hannah Kenny contributed 10 assists, seven kills, four digs and two aces in last week’s win over Morton. Senior Elizabeth Bruschuk provided nine digs, three aces and two assists against the Mustangs. Sophomore Calli Kenny provided five digs, four aces and three kills, while senior Katie Linnig supplied eight assists, three kills, three digs and two aces. Junior Hope Reckamp had four kills and an ace.

Reflections on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 updates from my COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus. I was pleased to see last week that President Biden is making plans for a global summit on COVID-19 vaccine supplies, manufacturing, and distribution.

Given that the COVID-19 virus has wreaked havoc across the globe, it is only logical that we would form international coalitions to defeat it.

My COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus was also encouraged to see last week that the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included $2 billion to expand global and domestic vaccine manufacturing.

While we need more support to vaccinate the nearly 60 percent of the world yet to receive a single dose of any COVID-19 vaccine, this is still an

important step in our goal of ending this pandemic. The COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus is committed to efforts that aggressively attack the virus, such as my NOVID Act which would create a U.S.-led program to vaccinate populations in the 92 poorest countries. This will save lives in those impoverished countries, as well as protect our country from further deadly COVID-19 variants arriving at our shores.

Provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act included in Build Back Better Act Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act. I introduced the Tobacco Tax

Equity Act alongside Senator Durbin to close loopholes in the tax code, raise cigarette taxes for the first time in over a decade, and apply federal taxes on e-cigarettes—such as JUUL products—for the first time.

As the co-founder of the Congressional Caucus to End the Youth Vaping Epidemic and Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I was a strong advocate for updating our tobacco tax code in this package.

E-cigarettes have grown in popularity among our youth population, with 20 percent of high school students reportedly using them in 2020, and it is time they are taxed like cigarettes to discourage their use among kids and teens.

Judiciary Committee heeds my calls for reforming employmentbased green card system After much advocacy efforts, I’m pleased to report that the

House Judiciary Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act this week, which included relief to individuals in the employment-based green card backlog.

As an original cosponsor of the Equal Access to Green Cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE) Act (H.R. 3648), I led 40 Members of Congress in sending a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on the importance of including this reform in this package.

The provisions included in the Judiciary Committee’s bill include measures to make the system faster, simpler and aid the over 1.2 million individuals stuck in the backlog. I hope that the Senate follows through on the next step and passes this portion of the Build Back Better Act. Raja Krishnamoorthi represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, which includes portions of Addison, Wood Dale, Bensenville, Elmhurst, Villa Park and Lombard.

Crime prevention tips you can use

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) offers the following crime prevention tips that can help prevent crime at home: • Consider installing motion-sensored lighting that will come on if someone is walking around your yard. Outside doors should have a motion-sensored, bright, working light to illuminate visitors.

• All entryways should have a working, keyed entry lock and sturdy deadbolt lock installed into the frame of the door.

• Keep bushes and trees trimmed so that you can see into your yard and neighbors can see your house.

• Look into an alarm system. A basic system can be purchased for less than $100, plus a monthly monitoring fee.

• Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor, not under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox.

• House numbers should be clearly displayed so police and other emergency vehicles can find the house quickly.

• Set at least two light timers to turn lights on and off in a logical sequence when away from home for an extended time period.

• Make sure sliding glass doors have strong, working key locks. A dowel or a pin can be installed to prevent the door from being shoved aside or lifted off the track. Lock the sliding door at night and when leaving the house.

• Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or make arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up when going away from home for a period of time.

So, people are up in arms that our president is ordering vaccinations. It’s not the first time our government has had to step in and do what’s right for the people. Nixon ordered that all federal employees must be vaccinated in the 1970s. All children were ordered to receive vaccinations in the 1950s and 1960s. LBJ, who signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, ordered all schools and federal agencies to be integrated, and then two years later ordered all hospitals must be integrated to receive Medicare funds. No questions, just requirements that saved, and were fair to, millions of people in our great country.

Presidential orders are not Republican or Democratic. They are good for all of us. Any refusal to get the shots is costing all of us! *** Am I the only one who is sick of hearing schools report their various numbers of COVID-positive cases?

Do schools constantly report how many of their students have the flu?

I don’t think so. And why don’t the schools ever report the number of students who are hospitalized with complications from the coronavirus? Maybe because there aren’t any such students. COVID-19 has a recovery rate of over 99 percent for most people. For younger people, getting the vaccine seems riskier than getting COVID-19.

Why are so many people so afraid of a virus that’s caused exactly zero deaths among people under 20 in DuPage County in the last 18 months? *** I read the story about the energy bill that was just passed (Lombardian, Sept. 16 issue). Pritzker said, quote, “After years of debate and discussion, science has prevailed.” I beg to differ.

Has there been a rash of COVID-19 related hospitalizations or deaths in those states? Of course not. Yet Pritzker and other fools will claim that Illinois’ mask mandate is useful. Wake up, people. *** With COVID, we keep hearing about how we must listen to the science and the data. Here’s some data for you from the CDC. There have been over 643,000 deaths from COVID in the U.S. between January 2020 and Sept. 8, 2021. Guess how many kids ages birth to 17 have died from COVID over that span. A grand total of 412 out of over 643,000. Want to know how many kids in this age group died from pneumonia from January 2020 to Sept. 8? More than double that—924. Shouldn’t we be taking measures in our schools to reduce the risks of these kids getting pneumonia? *** Thousands of illegal immigrants have been pouring into our country.

I was a in junior high school when the Oak Brook mall opened, and Sears was a staple: tools, paint, clothes, shoes, housewares, you name it. It was a treat to go with my dad on a Saturday morning, with the smell of buttered popcorn wafting through the store, knowing I would soon get to have some! I don’t totally blame online shopping, although I know it was a factor. When you think about it, though, Sears was in a sense a precursor to not having to shop in a store, when you could order from the catalogue! It will be missed. *** Someone complained in Speak Out about another commenter who refers to our governor as Pope Pritzker. I am Catholic, and I approve of the reference. Pritzker deserves to be mocked. *** It’s obvious from recent calls that there is a lot of frustration in this coun-

try and Lombard/Villa Park regarding COVID-19 mandates and the current presidential administration. That’s why being educated on candidates and issues is so important. Pritzker is up for re-election and he will win because he has more money than anyone else. Please know that his mask mandate is not a law. Governors cannot make laws; only the legislature can.

Please know what you talk about. If the government wants to follow the science, please know what the science is. I can find a report to say anything I want. Masks work, masks don’t work, get vaccines, social distance, etc. The government overreach is getting ridiculous. After opening weekends for the NFL and NCAA football games, where are the massive COVID-19 outbreaks? Biden is not what the people who voted for him thought he was.

For those voters, please explain why you voted for Biden without using the name Trump. Biden has done nothing in 50 years in political office. You were all duped. *** How can anyone take Biden’s vaccination order seriously when he does nothing to stop the surge of illegal migrants entering this country? *** For 14 consecutive presidential elections, from 1964 to 2016, the candidate who won Ohio won the election. The Republican candidate won Ohio eight times during that period, while the Democratic candidate won the state six times. Look it up if you like. Ohio is a bellwether state.

What happened in Ohio in the 2020 election? Trump beat Biden by eight points, or about 475,000 votes. That doesn’t necessarily mean Biden did not win key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia.

But did any so-called journalists wonder why Trump clearly won Ohio, yet

Biden, with a flood of mail-in support, pulled ahead in those other states the day after the election? *** Just a reminder that the entire Russia hoax story was cooked up by the Clinton campaign to smear Trump.

The leftist media peddled the story for years. How much airtime and newspaper space has been devoted to this completely bogus story? A lot, and many liberals lapped it up and parroted the nonsense in places like this Speak Out section. I don’t know if the latest indictment will do any good, but maybe it will help convince a few people that the story was garbage. *** Since the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are both over 90 percent effective and the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is 85 percent effective, I have to ask: If you have been vaccinated, then why are you afraid of getting the virus from someone who isn’t vaccinated? If you are, then you must not have much confidence in the protection these vaccines offer.

A busy week for the Warriors

The Willowbrook girls tennis team played four dual meets in four days last week. The Warriors earned 7-0 victories in three of those meets. Willowbrook began the week with a 7-0 sweep of Fenton on Sept. 13. One day later, the Warriors beat Proviso East 7-0 in a West Suburban Gold Conference contest in Villa Park.

Willowbrook played another conference home meet on Sept.

15, when it faced Hinsdale South. The visiting Hornets beat the Warriors 5-2. Willowbrook’s two winners in the dual meet were juniors Molly Brennan and Grace Van Dyke. Brennan is pictured during her victory in the No. 2 singles match. Van Dyke prevailed in the No. 3 singles battle. The Warriors finished their week with a 7-0 conference win at Morton on Sept. 16. Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes conference dual meets against Downers Grove South and Leyden.

Willowbrook’s boys golf team played in last week’s West Chicago Wildcat Invite at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club in West Chicago. The Warriors placed fifth out of 13 teams in the Sept.

13 invite with their team score of 351. Junior Brett Vandergrift (pictured earlier this season) provided Willowbrook’s lowest score in the event with his 18-hole total of 82 on the par-72 course. Junior Vince Guajardo shot an 87 for the Warriors. Senior Dom Faillo carded a 90, while junior Nick Chivilo posted a 92 to complete Willowbrook’s scoring lineup at the invite. Two days after playing in the invite, the Warriors lost 164-174 to Downers Grove South in a West Suburban Gold Conference dual meet at Village Greens of Woodridge. Faillo and Vandergrift both fired 9-hole rounds of 42 on a par-36 layout. Guajardo and senior Max Hirsch both posted scores of 45. The Warriors’ conference dual-meet record dropped to 4-1 following their loss to Downers Grove South.

Willowbrook is competing in this week’s West Suburban Gold Conference Meet at Prairie Bluff Golf Course in Lockport.

Foundation celebrates 35 years of charitable support in DuPage On Sept. 30, 1986, The DuPage Community Foundation was officially introduced as the new charitable conduit for DuPage County, starting out with a $100,000 matching challenge grant as a donor-advised fund of The Chicago Community Trust.

Thirty-five years later, DuPage Foundation’s total charitable capital has grown to more than $185 million, of which $60 million has been distributed in cumulative grants to succeed the Foundation’s vision to raise the quality of life in DuPage County.

Within the last four years, the Foundation doubled its charitable impact, distributing $60 million in cumulative grants, compared to awarding $30 million in cumulative grants as 2017 came to a close. Since its inception in 1986, the Foundation distributed a total of 8,812 grants to 1,493 not-forprofit agencies serving the residents of DuPage County and beyond.

During the last decade, the Foundation’s total annual grant distributions have increased from $1.4 million in 2011 to more than $8.9 million today. Through the Community Needs Grant Program, special initiatives, donor-advised grants and designated grants, the Foundation is committed to supporting local not-for-profit organizations in all areas of service to help DuPage residents in need.

The students are recipients of Montini Catholic’s Freshman Placement Exam Scholarships which are offered to incoming freshmen excelling on the Freshman Placement Exam (when taken at Montini Catholic). “All prospective students are encouraged to take the exam at Montini in order to be eligible for the scholarships,” said Jennifer Long Kavanagh, admissions representative. Scholarships are awarded based on national percentile ranking of the placement exam scores: Students scoring between the 95th to 99th percentiles receive a $2,500 scholarship; students scoring between the 90th to 94th percentiles receive a $1,500 scholarship; students scoring between the 85th to 89th percentiles receive a $1,000 scholarship.
