Villa Park’s Cherokee Rose Embroidery, Inc., located at 100 S. Villa Ave., closed its doors last month after 33 years in business. Nancy Woodruff, Cherokee Rose’s owner and manager, started the business in her parents’ house near the corner of Monterey Avenue and St. Charles Road in 1989. Three years later, she relocated the business to 220 W. St. Charles Road. She moved a couple of more times before settling at the location at 100 S. Villa Ave. nine years ago. Cherokee Rose sold custom-embroidered apparel for businesses, schools, organizations and individuals. Additionally, Cherokee Rose would embroider numerous items—including jackets, shirts, blankets, towels and bridal pieces—brought in by customers. The Villa Park Village Board honored Woodruff during its board meeting on Aug. 8. Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone read a proclamation recognizing Woodruff and expressing appreciation for her contribution to the betterment of Villa Park. “Eventu ally my husband and I would like to go somewhere warmer,” said Woodruff of her future plans. “We didn’t capitalize on things; that was the reality,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after Friday’s loss. “We were down a bunch of start ers, but still in a position to win. When other guys are given opportunities to step up, they have to do that. Breaks don’t go your way all the time. That’s part of the game. What did the Democratic mayor of Chicago do? She shipped them like cattle to the suburbs. Democrats, get it right. Don’t say one thing and then do another. And another thing: Joe Biden, your president, says everything is great in this world. Don’t worry about the high gas prices. Don’t worry about this, don’t worry about that because he doesn’t want to bring it up. It’s all his fault; in two years he’s destroyed this country. Yet, the Democrats keep giv ing money away. Well, now our pock ets are empty. Thank you, Democrats, for destroying the United States in two years. I’m not a Trump supporter, but I know how to add 2 and 2, and I know 2 plus 2 is 4 and you take the 4 which is $4 and you take away $6, I’ve got nothing left in my pocket.

The free screenings will take place at Willowbrook during the school day on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

More than 60 young adults die from SCD each week in the U.S., most without any warning signs. Something exciting is brewing in Villa Park. Villa Park BREWFEST will be held Saturday, Oct 1, at Cor tesi Veterans Memorial Park, 318 E. Kenilworth Ave., from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

Frankly, I thought they should all be taken to Washington, D.C.’s doorstep, since it is the Biden administration that opened the floodgates. Who are among these immigrants? Criminals and drug smugglers, unvaccinated and sick indi viduals, potential terrorists who have slipped in undetected? Who is vetting these people? Mayor Lightfoot, while having harsh words toward Abbott, said Chicago will welcome these im migrants. Then she said she will turn to the federal government for help with housing, food, basic needs, to ease the burden on Chicago. But it’s the federal government that created this mess in the first place.

This is for all you liberals and Democrats out there. Your president opened the borders. Now Texas, which is a Republican-run state, takes the people and ships them to these sanc tuary cities, which Mayor Lightfoot and Pritzker say is wrong. They say they’re shipping them in like cattle.

I read how Raja, our ever-modest “I-did-this” U.S. representative, was talking about the Taiwanese bringing their companies here to make electron ic chips, and he said it will boost our economy. Maybe so, but what about our own manufacturers getting in on the CHIPS and Science Act? Aren’t we always saying how we need more of our own companies making the goods we use?

How many times have you encoun tered people riding bikes, etc., on the street without lighting or reflective material? It’s not just kids, but many adults. People, you may see the cars, but they might not see you. A driver gets a police warning or ticket for a burned-out headlight or tail lights. If there aren’t enough police to enforce visibility laws, give these people rid ing on the street a loud honk when you see them. Maybe they will get the hint. That goes for people pushing baby buggies, too.

These smug, arrogant MAGA Re publicans think they’re easily going to take the House and Senate in Novem ber. I think you’re going to be in for a rude awakening on Nov. 8. The deci sion by your activist Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade is rallying wom en across the country. I can’t wait to see Tucker Carlson, Hannity and Lau ra Ingraham whine on election night about how Democrats will remain in control of Congress.**

I shop for same things every week at the grocery store. Two years ago, $35; last year, $50; and yesterday, $80. This is a direct result of the current admin istration. It marvels me how people can keep voting these folks in to office as they destroy our cost of living. We need to try new politicians from state to federal.

I’m calling about the Democratic crime bill that will go into effect Jan. 1, 2023. The Democrats call it the SAFE-T Act, but the only people who will be safer will be criminals. You can guarantee that violent crime will go up in DuPage County. That’s why 100 of the 102 county state’s attorneys came out against this pro-criminal bill. Thanks a lot, Democrats!***

Good morning. I’m a senior citi zen here in Villa Park and I’m very concerned with this new law that’s going to take effect Jan. 1, 2023. No cash bail in most cases. It is absolute ly ludicrous, insane and crazy that our governor would sign something like that into law. You’ve got to be insane if you vote this man back in. It’s just unbelievable. And if we don’t all say something or do something, we’re go ing to be more like New York. And I really think that’s what they want to do. I don’t understand at all why it’s important to let these people out of jail when that’s where they belong. Please help us. People, wake up.

Willowbrook’s boys golf team earned a third-place finish in the team results of last week’s 14-team West Chicago Invite at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club in West Chicago. The Warriors turned in a score of 328 in the Sept. 12 event, delivering what head coach Gary Walker described as the team’s best performance of the season. Seniors Brett Vandergrift and Vince Guajardo both fired 18-hole scores of 77 on the par-72 course to place fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event’s individual standings. Guajardo is pictured while hitting a tee shot (with Vandergrift watching) during a Warriors’ home meet earlier this season. More than 80 players participated in last week’s invite. Junior Victor Voskresenski carded an 85 for Willowbrook, while senior Nick Chivilo posted an 89. The Warriors wrapped up their West Suburban Conference season with a loss to Downers Grove South in a dual meet at Sugar Creek Golf Course on Sept. 8. The visiting Mustangs defeated the Warriors 143-158. Vandergrift shot Willowbrook’s best score of the meet by turning in a nine-hole total of 35 on the par-32 layout. Guajardo (38), Chivilo (42) and Voskresenski (43) rounded out the team’s scoring lineup. The Warriors are playing in this week’s West Suburban Conference Meet at Prairie Bluff Public Golf Course in Crest Hill. Willowbrook will play in an IHSA Class 3A regional at Glendale Lakes Golf Club on Sept. 28.

I love how the supposedly compas sionate left flipped out after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent those here illegally in this country to Martha’s Vineyard and outside the residence of Kamala Harris in Washington. I keep hearing about how much the left cares for these migrants. Well, this was the perfect op portunity for rich leftists in Martha’s Vineyard, like Barack Obama, to put their money where their mouths are and help care for them. Instead, they were sent to a military base on Cape Cod two days later. Obama has a $12 million mansion there. I imagine he could have taken in all 50 of the mi grants at Martha’s Vineyard without a problem.

They’ve visited me a few times this summer. We went into town to the

Her appearance came just 53 days before the Nov. 8 election when con trol of the U.S. House and Senate will be up for grabs and when all state-level elected offices in Illinois will be on the ballot as well.

“Instead of ducking and deflect ing, the Vice President needs to an swer questions regarding the Biden Administration’s role in fueling the inflation crisis, and where she stands on Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot’s failure to keep our com munities safe,” the Illinois Republi can Party said in a statement.

I clean the windows and mirrors and they stay spotless. Same goes for the kitchen floor and countertops.

Three of seven Illinois Supreme Court seats are on the November ballot: Mary Jane Theis (D) re tention, Michael J Burke (R) or Mary O’Brien (D) 2nd District, and Elizabeth M Rochford (D) or Mark Curran (R) 3rd District.

Vice President Kamala Harris came to Chicago Sept. 16 to rally voters who support abortion rights and urge them to turn out in the up coming midterm elections.

So I finally made it. Man, how I’ve waited for this stage in life.

It is nothing short of magic—much more for me than for them. I am the winner in this equation.

But Democrats are hopeful that the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organi zation, the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, will energize Demo cratic, independent, and even some Republican voters and draw attention away from issues like rising infla tion, crime and high gasoline prices.

Recently a friend asked me “Ar en’t we safe in Illinois?” My re sponse: “Don’t bet on it, vote on it!”

Illinois Republicans, however, were quick to respond.

After a weekend with my grands I’ve come to a couple of conclusions. Pillows be damned. A clean kitchen can check itself at the door for all I care. Give me those grand babies— those messy, sticky, sweet and lovable grand babies—chaos and all.

I feel the same about the handprints

on the mirror. I know they are fleeting. I know these days of magic are short lived in the big scheme of things.

The U.S. Supreme Court, via the Dobbs decision, ruled that the Con stitution doesn’t give women a right to an abortion thereby overturning the nearly 50-year precedent of Roe v. Wade. What this means is that all wom en in the U.S., including your sis ters, daughters, granddaughters, and nieces don’t have this right and that states can decide, either legislatively or by court ruling, which reproduc tive privileges are allowed for their state’s

Who will support a woman’s right to U.S.choose?Rep. Sean Casten (D) for 6th District re-election strongly sup ports women’s rights. Please vote carefully in November.

Last.By free, I mean a stage in life where chaos no longer rings supreme. As much as I indulged and relished that stage, I celebrate (to an extent) its end.I can put pillows on the bed (neatly) in the morning and know they will still be in place when I go to bed at night. I can put the cat food or water in a dish on the floor and rest assured that no one will touch it, turn it upside down or try to drink or eat it.

Do Illinois women have rights to abortion?

Pritzker, other leaders say Illinois will remain a safe haven for women seeking abortion

In 2019, however, Pritzker signed into law the Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares that access to abortion and other re productive health care services is a “fundamental right” under Illinois law.“There’s no doubt that our nation is headed down a dangerous spiral, one where a radical few dictate who does and doesn’t deserve rights,” Pritzker said during the event. “But here in Illinois, we will not go back wards.”Megan

candy store. We rode on the pontoon to the sand bar. We stayed up late, way past our bedtimes, putting together puzzles and crafting at the kitchen table. We picked veggies from the garden and tasted them right there. We found apples that had fallen from the apple tree and made homemade apple crisp. We watched the eagle’s nest, caught fish, witnessed loons with babies on their back and saw snapping turtles hatch. It’s been a magical time. Nothing short of it. At least for me. I can’t speak for my grands; I hope they feel the same way.

Slices of life Fingerprints on the mirror

For a person who self-actualizes over order, it is a piece of heaven on earth. Except for one tiny factor (or two):Theygrandchildren.cametovisit last weekend and I was reminded of the beauty of chaos. I was reminded of the loneliness a beautifully made, pillowfilled—albeit empty—bed can create.

So, despite my orderly nature, I walk by those fingerprints every day and smile. I think maybe I should clean them, but know I won’t. At least not for a while.

Speaking at a roundtable discus sion on reproductive rights at the University of Illinois Chicago, Har ris said the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade has put abortion rights at the forefront in races up and down the ballot.“Who is your governor matters,” she said. “Whether they’re going to protect these rights and support these rights to freedom and liberty, it matters. Who is your attorney gen eral matters. Whether they are going to protect and defend the principles ingrained in the Constitution of the United States, that matters. Who your local prosecutor is matters if you are in a place that has, as many are at tempting to do, criminalized health care providers and are attempting to punishHarriswomen.”wasjoined at the event by Gov. JB Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Attorney General Kwame Raoul, U.S. Rep. Danny Da vis and a number of other abortion rights supporters. They were sched uled to hold a political rally on the UIC campus later in the day.

They are too close to precious memories. They serve as a representation of the squeals and giggles and marshmallows and freezies eaten this summer. They are a reminder that childhood is ephemeral. Handprints start out low on the mirror and rise higher and higher each year until they gradually disappear along with the stickiness and innocence of childhood.Sofornow—for beyond now—I celebrate sticky. I celebrate the simple beauty of a visit to the candy store or picking tomatoes, pulling carrots, plucking zinnias from the garden or finding magic apples on the ground as seen through a child’s eyes.

Historically, the president’s party loses congressional seats in a mid term election. Democrats currently hold a slim, nine-vote majority in the U.S. House while the U.S. Senate is evenly divided, giving Harris the tie-breaking vote on many issues.

Since the Dobbs decision, strict abortion restrictions have taken ef fect in many states, including all those that surround Illinois. That has made Illinois a destination for wom en seeking abortion who live in states where the procedure is now virtually banned or tightly regulated.

Letter to the editor

I remember a similar instance with our dog, Daisy, years ago, except instead of fingerprints on the mirror, she left nose prints on the window. After Daisy passed over her rainbow bridge, I noticed the nose prints, and for the longest time couldn’t bring myself to wash them away. It was like washing her away.

After their first visit in June, I noticed the hallway mirror. It’s a fulllength type, reaching from the floor to near the ceiling. At the bottom were numerous handprints, of the childhood variety. They’d obviously found themselves in the mirror and couldn’t help touching and leaving a visible reminder of their presence.

And you’ll know why

Judges and legislators are vital, espe cially now that the Illinois Supreme Court has the power to decide. Many voters don’t focus on judicial elec tions. We need to carefully review prior rulings and statements from each judge to determine how they may rule in the future.

After years of being pregnant, breastfeeding, snuggling little ones in the middle of the night and cleaning up LEGOs off the floor day and night (after first stepping on them) I’m finallyFreehere.atlast. Free at last. Free. At.

So I celebrate visits to the lake. Chaos and all. Fingerprints and all. Especially the fingerprints, the lessons they teach and the perspective they bring. I wouldn’t give them up for the world. And if you visit me next summer, they might well still be here.

thought that Roe was “settled law” and believed it was safe based on the Trump nominees’ state ments; however, the U.S. Supreme Court’s vote of 6 out of 9 against Roe dashed those beliefs.
