Villa Park VFW Post 2801 Auxiliary to accept essays for youth scholarship competitions

Deadline to submit entries is Oct. 31; Patriot’s Pen essay is open to students in grades 6-8; Voice of Democracy is for high school students

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary will participate in the upcoming 2021-22 Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy youth scholarship competitions.

The Patriot’s Pen contest is for students in grades 6-8. Entrants must complete an essay by writing an answer (300 to 400 words) to this year’s theme question: “How can I be a good American?”

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition is open to all high school students. Contestants will write an essay respond-

ing to the 2021-22 theme question: “America: Where do we go from here?”

In addition to writing their response to that question, students will make an audio recording (3 to 5 minutes) of their essay.

Students who participate in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essays can advance to four different levels of competition—VFW Post, VFW District, VFW State and VFW National. Students can earn scholarship funds by advancing to each level. The first-place national award for the Patriot’s Pen contest

is $5,000. The grand prize in the Voice of Democracy competition is a $30,000 scholarship.

The deadline to submit entries to VFW Post 2801 in both competitions is Sunday, Oct. 31.

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 Auxiliary invites the public to a free concert on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The concert, which will take place at the post (located at 39 E. St. Charles Road) from 5:30 to 8:30

p.m., will feature Full Volume—a local classic rock band.

Full Volume will perform some of the greatest hits of several bands, including Lynyrd Skynrd, ZZ Top, The Doors, CCR, The Rolling Stones, Bad Company Aerosmith, Cheap

Trick, The Allman Brothers and Tom Petty.

In addition to music, the event will feature food and drinks, as well as bucket raffles. Donations to the post are greatly encouraged and appreciated.

Warriors move to 13-0 after winning the title at another invite Willowbrook wins five matches in Saturday’s event at Leyden

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team improved its overall season record to 13-0 by winning five straight matches and claiming the championship at Saturday’s six-team Eagle Invite at Leyden High School.

The Warriors didn’t lose a single game during their five victories at Leyden’s invite. Willowbrook opened Saturday’s round-robin event with a 25-20, 25-20 victory over Lake Forest.

The Warriors then beat Lane Tech 25-6, 25-6. In its third match of the invite, Willowbrook defeated DePaul College Prep 25-9, 25-14. The Warriors then beat Leyden 25-11, 25-6.

Willowbrook completed its firstplace performance at the event with a 25-16, 25-17 victory over Conant.

Sophomore Calli Kenny contributed 11 kills, eight digs and two aces for the Warriors in Saturday’s match against Conant. Freshman Hannah Kenny provided 15 assists, six digs, five kills and one ace. Senior Katie Linnig had nine assists, seven digs and an ace. Junior Hope Reckamp hit six kills, while senior Kyla Ostrowski and junior Natalie Cipriano bashed four and three kills, respectively. Senior Elizabeth Bruschuk contributed

five assists, three digs and three aces.

Calli Kenny provided a total of 39 kills and 23 digs during the five matches at Saturday’s invite. Her sister Hannah supplied 24 kills and 43 assists, while Linnig amassed 45 assists and 20 digs.

The Warriors’ win at the Eagle Invite came seven days after their championship effort at their own eightteam invitational in Villa Park. Willowbrook won five straight matches at its two-day event, which ended on Sept. 4. The Warriors earned a threegame victory over Metea Valley in the invite’s championship match.

The Warriors started their West Suburban Gold Conference season by defeating Addison Trail 25-8, 2512 in Addison on Sept. 7. Hannah Kenny piled up 10 kills, nine digs, five assists and two aces in the victory over the Blazers. Calli Kenny delivered seven kills, seven digs and three aces. Linnig handed out 14 assists and made five digs. Bruschuk made eight digs, while Cipriano connected for three kills.

The Warriors’ season continues with this week’s matches against Morton, Proviso West and Riverside Brookfield.

The Willowbrook football team earned its first win of the season on Friday, when it routed Proviso East 40-14 in a West Suburban Gold Conference game in Villa Park. The Warriors, who opened their season with a pair of non-conference road losses, improved to 1-2.

Senior Josh Brown scored Willowbrook’s first two touchdowns of the night. His 24-yard scoring run gave the Warriors a 6-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. Moments later, the Pirates turned the ball over

on a fumble. Brown recovered the loose ball to set up Willowbrook’s next scoring drive. Shortly after the Warriors’ offensive unit returned to the field, Brown pushed the lead to 12-0 when he ran 28 yards for a touchdown with 9:03 left in the first quarter. Junior Jacob Kotcherian made the extra-point kick to boost Willowbrook’s lead to 13-0.

Seven of 10 voters in our respective central Illinois counties voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. We are not Trump fans, yet many of our friends are.

Trump will go away; his base won’t, so what gives with our friends?

Based on chats and overheard conversations over the past year at our Legion post, country club, pubs, coffee shops and outdoor cookouts, we sum up here the continuing Trump loyalties as we have heard them, but in our words.

Our Trump friends range from working stiffs to successful entrepreneurs living in once-proud, now hollowed out cities like Peoria and Decatur. As both of us are retired, our sample is skewed toward the mature set, yet not wholly so.

Our overall “finding” is that of a profound disenchantment with America’s political, business, academic and social policy leadership, across both political parties—our elites, you might say.

The roots of disenchantment go back as far as the Vietnam War, which coincides roughly with the beginnings of American Decline, certainly as perceived by older Trump fans.

For example, our political leaders have taken us into long, drawn-out wars, of immeasurable cost in men and treasure—only to keep losing them and pulling out with our tails CLUES ACROSS 1. About the same time as Vietnam, business leaders began sending our jobs to China, enfeebling the American manufacturing base, and without so much as a “Thank you very much” to American workers.

More recently, we have been educating China’s future tech wizards on our best engineering and science campuses, shoveling invaluable technological know-how into the laps of our primary competitor.

In addition to saving our allies’ bacon in the Big War, we continue to spend jillions protecting Europeans from harm. In return, Europeans look down their noses at us with barely concealed contempt. At home, Trump fans yearn for the good old days of two-parent families, with some respect and discipline in the home. Yet, our social policy experts push Congress to adopt scores of costly social programs that appear to diss traditional family life, instead encouraging dependence on government handouts, rather than building the resilience needed in the home.

All the while, the political and economic classes reap the benefits.

Washington is seen as a widening cesspool of big-paying jobs for politicians, lawyers, lobbyists and staffers. Some of the staffers go on to Wall Street, to assist in knowingly pushing such things as toxic mortgages onto unsuspecting investors and ill-suited homeowners—never to pay a price for their criminality or for

Worse, the nouveaux elites, from the Clintons to the Obamas, appear to feel good about the jobs they think they have done, seemingly oblivious to the national decline that angers the Trump base.

To add insult to injury, a clueless Hillary Clinton describes the Trumpers as “deplorables,” which is like arousing caged lions with red meat.

So, “Make America Great Again” continues as the perfect rallying cry against the failures of the American power structure, say Trump fans.

The Trump base, at least those around us here in struggling central Illinois, can overlook the personality flaws of Trump because he talks a blunt, unvarnished, bar-room language in stark contrast to the hyper-political correctness that smothers direct conversations about America’s problems.

We think his fans cling to Trump because they fear when he goes, our elite will again go unchallenged, and American decline will continue.

We are not Trump fans, yet in reflecting on what we hear, we think the Trump base makes an arguable case that we deserve better than we’ve been getting.

I am calling about Jackson Middle School pick-up and drop-off procedures, which are crazy. I’ve lived a block away from Jackson for 37 years.

It gets worse every year. The village recently installed sensors on our street to see how fast people are going. All they had to do was ask us; lots and lots of cars cut down our street to avoid the Jackson jam-up. It’s a quagmire. It’s crazy over there. Somebody’s going to get hit; somebody’s going to get killed.

Please, Villa Park village board and police, do some patrolling and come and talk to the people who live on our street. You don’t have to spend all this money on these sensors. We’ve been complaining about this for years. It’s time to do something to make the dropoff procedure at Jackson a little more fluent. It’s crazy. Thanks a lot. *** Apparently, “my body, my choice” only applies to abortion. It certainly doesn’t apply if you dare choose not to get vaccinated or not to wear a mask. *** To the person who called about grocery stores putting newspapers where they can be seen instead of being located after you check out: One, perhaps contact the store in question, instead of Speak Out, to make your request?

Two, if you know that is where the newspapers are, swing by there first, or before you finish your shopping, to get the paper you want. Problem solved. *** Just like with politics, masks and COVID-19, the abortion debate is not likely to change minds. I am pro-life but do not judge others’ right to choose.

However, the recent ruling in Texas is extreme in not allowing the termination of a pregnancy that was the result of rape or incest. I don’t subscribe to the view that abortion is simply part of “reproductive health,” except when a woman’s life is in jeopardy. Example:

But, what is going on at another local grocery store? Employees, delivery people and customers are not wearing them. Come on, help keep your customers safe—enforce the law! *** It was good to see capacity crowds at several college football games around the country. People were able to live their lives and enjoy themselves. Of course, there are some of the COVID-19 scolds who want to maintain lockdowns forever. But lockdowns don’t work. *** Since the left is up in arms on the ruling in Texas, I would imagine the mask mandates will be lifted. My body. My choice. *** America is not made up of the Washington elitists that lie, cheat, deceive and manipulate. We must realize that most of the politicians and bureaucrats, both Republicans and Democrats, are not working for us. Over the years they have shown themselves to be inept, callous and out of touch with the American people. COVID-19 transmission level remains ‘High’ in DuPage County DuPage County continues to see increased COVID-19 cases and individuals requiring hospitalization causing the county to remain at the highest level of community transmission, “High”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) reminds residents that vaccines continue to provide the highest level of protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, 87 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one

COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 84 percent are fully vaccinated.

However, among 12 to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 77 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 58 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Currently, individuals with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended to receive a third dose of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider.

Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be giv-

en 28 days after receiving the second dose.

The DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

Although booster shots are expected to begin this fall, the FDA must first authorize a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also must issue booster dose recommendations based on the evidence presented. As more information becomes available in the coming weeks, DCHD will share additional updates.

New telehealth legislation co-sponsored

by Cullerton signed into law State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) was a co-sponsor in the Senate of House Bill 3308 legislation expanding telehealth services in Illinois and recently signed into law.

“From initial consultations with a specialty doctor to mental health check-ins with a therapist, the use of telehealth throughout this pandemic has provided so many more opportunities for people to access health care,” Cullerton said. “I am so glad to see this legislation signed today, because without it, so many people would lose their ease of access to health care.”

Telehealth services were largely used during the COVID-19 pandemic due to emergency federal and state orders. This legislation will maintain and expand telehealth services by requiring insurance companies to utilize similar billing processes for both in-person and telehealth services.

During the pandemic, telehealth services reduced the number of missed appointments while increasing care plan adherence and improving chronic disease management. For those who are homebound or find it difficult to leave the house, telehealth services allow them to check in with their doctors without the stress of leaving their home. Additionally, telehealth services give people easier access to counseling for mental health.

The law is effective immediately.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone and his daughter, Alexandra, took part in the Elmhurst Walkin Assistance Network’s ‘Cue for a Cause, an annual barbecue competition and family festival to benefit the organization. This year’s ‘Cue for a Cause also included a baking contest. Alexandra helped out Elmhurst resident Dan Gibbons, who went on to take first place for best ribs.

In addition, Alexandra won the pie-baking competition.
