Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801 held its Memorial Day service on Monday morning at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park. Post Commander Jim Blankshain is pictured bowing his head as Willowbrook High School students Lily Hendrickson and Anna Seelbach sound taps at the end of the ceremony. The post’s 2020 Memorial Day event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s observance included a reading of the names of the Post 2801 members who have recently died. That list included World War II veteran Charles “Sid” Bergh, who served as the master of ceremonies of the post’s annual Memorial Day service for several years. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bergh died in October 2020. He was 94 years old. Bergh was the post’s last surviving World War II veteran.

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine now approaching its seventh month, and the CCP applying more military and economic pressure to the democratic government of Taiwan, it is more important than ever that we strengthen our ties with democracies abroad that share our values and interests.Bysupporting the Ukrainians’ defense of their country, we help deter future aggression from those who would otherwise follow in Putin’s footsteps. By helping to ensure Taiwan’s security, we help protect not only one of the world’s most inclusive democracies, but also the leading global producer of the microchips that help drive our economy.

That’s why I led a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer with U.S. Reps. Angie Craig (D-Minn.), Lucy McBath (D-Ga.), and Dan Kildee (D-Mich.), to urge him to hold a vote on the Affordable Insulin Now Act. That bill, which passed the House in March, would extend that monthly $35 insulin price cap to all Americans, regardless of age or insurance provider.During the debate over the IRA, 57 U.S. Senators, including seven Republicans, voted in favor of an amendment to implement the same price cap for all Americans, but that bipartisan effort was blocked through procedural measures.

Hearing a new song that touches your heart without you ever expecting

As we traverse through life, I think most of us ponder and wonder about our purpose—the reason for our experience on the planet at this particular time. What is the meaning of life? What is the meaning of me? (Gulp.)I’ve pondered this question quite a bit, feeling a little inept in my answers. I long for a grand and important purpose—to change the world for the better. But the honest answer is I’m just a normal human living life in abject anonymity—and quite liking it that way, thank you veryOnmuch.onelevel, I believe I should aspire to have a grand and worldchanging purpose. On another, maybe being average and obscure has a purpose in it as well.

If there’s one thing I want to make clear from our discussion, it’s that the rising tide of authoritarianism can be stopped by the world’s democracies, but it will take a global effort and strong American leadership to succeed.

Maybe not everyone is supposed to rise to the level of Mother Theresa or Mahatma Gandhi. Maybe doing the best in the everyday can and does make the world a better place—even if it is only a little bit at a time. So,instead of going for the grandiose purpose, maybe we take it to a smaller scale. Instead of lifealtering, perhaps appreciating and maximizing on each moment is a purpose in and of itself.

It’s time for Senator Schumer to bring that bipartisan support to bear through a floor vote on an insulin cap, because no American should have to choose between buying insulin or basic food necessities.

I get tired of seeing all the criticism of Gov. Pritzker in Speak Out. I think he’s done a good job considering he’s had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. He had our health and safety in mind and was careful to gradually allow business es to re-open and relax mask mandates. Compare that to how Ron DeSantis recklessly left Florida open and not re quire masks. I am also glad he has stood up for a woman’s right to choose, and the state now has a balanced budget. He has done a lot of good.***

I see Rep. Raja touting the Inflation Reduction Act (Sept. 8 issue); then please explain why the Feds are rais ing interest rates. How does that help someone who wants to refinance, take out a loan or otherwise reduce debt to offset the rising costs of gas, food, etc.? He also says there will be a cap on insulin costs starting in 2023. Why wait and why did it take so long? There are plenty of people who I am sure will suffer financially between now and then. And speaking of capping, the governor signed a law capping pay day loans at 36 percent: the Predatory Loan Prevention Act. Read that again: 36 percent. While loan companies are there to make money, surely this is predatory in its very nature, preying on vulnerable people who may have had a temporary downturn in their credit.

Will more people start to realize that COVID-19 was little more than a flu for most people? It would have passed with little notice without the media

California wants to abandon the use of fossil fuels and yet they have so many forest fires polluting the at mosphere because of their neglect of maintaining the forests. How smart is that?

For once, I actually do want to see the government step in and regulate some thing. How can the government think capping interest at 36 percent is doing anyone any favors?*

Crime is in the news every sin gle day. A young mother abducted and murdered in Memphis. Gangs of armed carjackers in Chicago. Constant reports of catalytic converter thefts in our area. Countless stories of career criminals who are released from pris on, only to commit more crimes. But what does Biden rant about? MAGA Republicans! Yes, crime is a problem throughout our country, and Demo crat-run cities are becoming no-go zones. But Biden wants us to believe the real threat is coming from people who disagree with his political poli cies. Wake up, America!***

Illinois, you’d better wake up. If you want to get back to some kind of a somewhat normal life, do not vote to re-elect Mr. Pritzker. OK, everybody thinks this guy balanced the budget. No, he did not. It was improved. You’d better wake up. And he made marijua na legal. I don’t care how much reve nue marijuana brings in. If you’re one of these people who say there’s noth ing wrong with pot, you’d better think again. Oh, big deal. It brings it a lot of revenue. Have your taxes been cut? All they want to do in Illinois is tax and spend, tax and spend, and if that’s what you want, fine. You’re going to be put into poverty. So you’d better wake up now.

I didn’t go to college because I couldn’t afford it. You want to go to college, you can’t afford it, but you want me to help pay for it. Isn’t there something wrong *here?**

Willowbrook’s boys soccer team began its West Suburban Gold Conference schedule with last week’s exciting 2-1 win over Addison Trail in Villa Park. The Sept. 6 contest was tied at 1-1 at half time. Junior Liron Ebema scored the Warriors’ first-half goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Blazers responded with their own first-half score to even the match. Willowbrook senior Aiden Amin scored the winning goal with about 19 minutes remaining in the second half. Sophomore Armando Martinez assisted Amin’s goal. Above right: Martinez (No. 11) and Amin (No. 23) are pictured moments after the go-ahead goal. Above, left: Willowbrook senior goalkeeper Jack Voss gets ready to throw the ball after making a save late in the match. The Warriors improved their overall season record to 3-2-2 with the win, which ended a lengthy string of losses to the Blazers in the annual meeting of District 88 rivals. Beating the Blazers allowed the Warriors to take possession of the District 88 Derby trophy, which goes to the winner of each year’s conference contest between the two teams. Willowbrook moved to 4-2-2 following its 2-1 non-conference victory at Joliet Catholic on Sept. 8. Sophomore Vinni DaSilva and junior Lucas Bohm each scored one goal in the Warriors’ win over Joliet Catholic. Senior Ricardo Acosta provided one assist. Willowbrook’s schedule this week includes a conference match at Mor ton and a non-conference home match against Glenbard South.

The Warriors lost 6-1 at Hinsdale South in a conference dual meet on Sept. 8. Lopez provided Willow brook’s lone win with her victory in the No. 3 singles match.

Maggie Anderson and junior Brenda Martinez turned in a third-place fin ish.Willowbrook opened its West Suburban Gold Conference season with a 4-3 loss to Addison Trail in a Sept. 6 dual meet in Villa Park. The Warriors’ winners against the Blaz ers included the tandem of Ander son and Martinez at No. 2 doubles. Junior Lauren Schalk teamed with sophomore Avery Solis to secure a win at No. 3 doubles. The Warriors’ No. 4 doubles team of juniors Dunia Elghor and Kailee Kattiyaman also posted a victory against the Blazers.

So I read that Steve Bannon is pleading not guilty to charges of mon ey laundering, conspiracy and fraud related to an alleged online scheme to raise money for the construction of the wall along the southern border. Of course, he’s pleading not guilty. After all, Bannon and his old boss, Trump, are such honorable men and can do no wrong. Not! I hope Bannon and Trump are convicted and sent to prison sooner rather than later.

The first start of a friendship is that someone has to initiate a “hello.”

Hi, I just want to say I’m one of the 78 million semi-fascists who will not vote for Biden and never will. Good bye.

Many American citizens are living homeless. Immigrants come here and they want respect and dignity. We give them a place to live. We give them credit cards, cable TV and phones; they get everything. And here the cit izens of this country are living home less. Is there something wrong with this picture? We need to get a new governor and a new mayor of Chicago. Immediately. Thank you. Goodbye.

We have to change our leadership. Our representatives continue to vote along party lines. We need change. Please educate yourself on the Safe-T Act they support in Illinois. It will al low criminals for crimes like aggra vated battery, second-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary and fleeing and eluding become bail-less crimes. That means they charge the person and then let them go. We are going to be a law less society in short order. Please look at alternative candidates. Time to move on.

I’m referencing a Speak Out column on Thursday, Aug. 11 in regard to elec tric vehicles. It says “on top of that it takes several hours, if not days, to fully recharge them.” In your guidelines for writing and submitting a letter, it says we reserve the right to edit the letter for reasons of clarity, space restric tions and libel. I think you ought to do it for a fact check. I have not heard any electric vehicle manufacturer who has a charger that takes days to charge. This gives the wrong impression to a lot of people who may have an interest in that vehicle, and I don’t know why that was included in there because it’s simply giving incorrect information. Thank you.

A lot of the people who believe Trump had nuclear secrets at his Flor ida home also bought the hoax that Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 campaign.

Please keep in mind the feel-good story of a workers’ rights bill that is actually Amendment 1, which would increase your property taxes by about $2,100 by 2026. This may also be la beled a proposed amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution. It also hurts Illinois’ chances of attracting new business which will also raise your cost of living. Please pay attention, people. We need to change the current state government starting with all our local representatives who will presum ably vote along party lines as they do on every other bill.* * *

Assessed values are one of the three variables which determine individual property tax amounts. The other two variables are homestead exemption amounts, if any, and property tax rates. Tax rates are determined from the budgets of all units of local government supplying services to your property. Your tax bill is calculated by multiplying the equalized assessment for your property (minus exemptions) by the tax rate.

Your property is to be assessed at the above listed median level of assessment for the assessment district. You may check the accuracy of your assessment by dividing your assessment by the median level of assessment. The resulting value should equal the estimated fair cash value of your property. If the resulting value is greater than the estimated fair cash value of your property, you may be over-assessed. If the resulting value is less than the fair cash value of your property, you may be under-assessed. You may appeal your assessment to the Board of Review

Farm Buildings...................... 1.0000

Illinois law requires assessed values of property, other than farmland and coal, are to be assessed of 33 1/3% of fair market value. Restrictions within Illinois law delay the change in property assessments caused by changes of actual property fair cash value. State law requires the assessed values are to be adjusted based upon data from the three prior calendar years before the assessment date. In appreciating markets, this forces current property assessments to lag behind recent sales prices, and in declining markets, the decline of assessed values is delayed.

Contact your local assessor’s office to review your assessment if you believe the fair cash value is incorrect or you are not assessed uniformly with comparable properties in your neighborhood. A physical description of the property, which includes information used by the Township Assessor to create the assessed value, is displayed on their website. Please review this information for accuracy. Township Assessor Contact Information:
