Catholics come to Springfield to protest abortion bills, high taxes

Catholic protestors rallied at the Illinois Statehouse Sept. 4, denouncing lawmakers’ recent expansion of abortion rights and potential votes to further that agenda.

Led by Father Edward Ohm, of the Diocese of Peoria and based in Lincoln, a group of about 30 met to ensure their legislators know they are not in favor of laws recently enacted by the General Assembly and Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, including the Reproductive Health Act and a package of tax increases.

The Reproductive Health Act created access to abortion, birth control, pregnancy benefits and exams, among other services, as a fundamental right, which means no level of government can infringe upon a man’s or woman’s access.

Ohm said his frustration first began when taxpayer-funded abortion became legal under former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. The RHA mandates private insurance companies regulated by the state to cover abortion procedures if they also cover pregnancy-related benefits.

He added he is opposed to the abortion rights legislators’ next initiative, repealing a statute that mandates minors consult their parents before getting the procedure.

Meanwhile, high taxes in Illinois, Ohm said, are “wrecking havoc on people’s lives.”

“Churches need people to help them when it comes to keeping the doors open on the weekends,” he said. “... The funds are not as plentiful as they used to be because more people are paying taxes and, on top of that, more people are moving out of state.”

Gaming Board adopts new ethics rules for casino licenses New law means expanded gambling requires more ethics reporting

The Illinois Gaming Board announced Sept. 6 that it had adopted new rules it said will strengthen existing ethical safeguards and require more people to file ethical disclosure reports as part of the casino license selection process.

The new rules are the result of legislation enacted this year that allows for the development of six new land-based casinos, including one in Chicago, along with legalized sports wagering.

The new rules were enacted under the board’s emergency rulemaking authority, which allows the board to adopt temporary rules, under certain circumstances, without going through the normal process of public notice and hearings.

Such rules are effective for only a maximum of 150 days, and the agency would have to go through

the regular rulemaking process to make them permanent.

“The purpose of the emergency rule is to further strengthen the IGB’s existing ethics requirements and enhance the transparency of the casino license selection process authorized under the Illinois Gambling Act,” IGB administrator Marcus Fruchter said in a statement.

In addition, all applicants and licensees will be required to disclose any potential or actual violations of ethics laws spelled out in state law committed by the applicant, licensee or any of their agents or employees.

The Villa Park Public Library’s library card design contest for children and teens, which began earlier this month, continues through Sept. 30.

Children in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to enter their artwork in the contest. The winning designs will appear on new library cards issued by the library beginning in December.

The library will make two different cards—one from two divisions— children in kindergarten through sixth grade, and teenagers in grades 7-12.

The winner in each division will receive a $100 gift card from Barnes and Noble. The Friends of the Villa Park Public Library donated the gift cards.

The contest is open to contestants 18 and younger who have a valid Villa Park Public Library card. If a contestant does not currently have a card, they most apply for one in person with a parent/legal guardian before turning in their entry prior to the deadline of Sept. 30.

Entries must be accompanied by the official entry form, which is available at the library at 305 S. Ardmore

Ave. The entry form is also available online at the library’s website, www. vppl.info.

The card dimensions are 2 and 1/8 inches by 3 and 3/8 inches. All artwork must be original and in color. Submissions can include high resolution computer-generated submissions, or paper submissions using colored pencils/ pens/paint. Artwork should be one-dimensional for printing purposes.

There is a limit of one entry per person.

Entries may be submitted directly to a library staff member at the checkout desk, by mail, or via email.

All entries will be displayed in the library throughout October and judged by a panel including community members. The winners from each division will be announced and notified on Monday, Nov. 4. The winners will be invited to attend the Villa Park Library Board meeting on Nov. 25.

To hear them tell it, a group of local seniors believes that “happy days are here again,” at least on Thursday mornings when they gather to sing some classic tunes.

These individuals are members of the Lombard Park District’s Lilac Town Chorus, a senior citizens choral group that performs at a variety of venues, sharing a common interest in singing together and entertaining others.

For about the last five years, the chorus has been under the direction of Jeanne McNamara, a senior herself who has been singing since her own youth.

McNamara is a Cape Cod native who recalled how she enjoyed singing since she was young, and was once cast as the lead in “The Sound of Music” through her local church theater, when she was about 20 years old.

The Villa Park resident explained that she is a retired nurse, and when asked how she came to the area, she replied with a laugh that she was actually on her way to Hawaii many years ago, when funds ran dry and she

Born in the shadow of 9/11 Generation of college students grows up affected by terrorist attacks

Jordan Bruder is too young to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

But she recalls growing up believing the blame for the the 9/11 attacks was squarely put “on Muslim people,” an indictment some people in the towns she grew up in south central Illinois continue to harbor about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., that killed nearly 3,000 people.

“Everything was whitewashed for me,” said Bruder, a sophomore studying business and political science at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

That re-orientation—“a self-discovery,” Bruder termed it—began with talking with her father, Eric Bruder, a middle-school history teacher, as well as doing her own research about 9/11.

“That’s made all the difference for me,” Bruder said. “Being a hateful person, that came from a place of ignorance. Now I feel I can go out into the world and be more tolerant.”

Bruder is part of a generation, now entering college, that has no direct memory of that day or weren’t even born yet. It’s giving professors new challenges and new audiences to teach about one of the most defining moments of the history of the United States. And to older people who have their “where-were-you” stories about 9/11, that gap can be jarring, if understandable.

College students may know about the events and the significance of them, said Christopher McDonald, a professor of political science at LLCC, but they aren’t able to experience the same visceral impact of those who watched the horror from 18 years ago.

McDonald, who teaches an “Early Start” program for high school seniors for LLCC, has seen this moment coming.

“There’s a distance for these students,” McDonald acknowledged.

“They sense it’s really important, though.”

“I feel like these (students) are supposed to feel like (9/11) resonates, but it doesn’t,” said Kristen Chenoweth, the director of admissions at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, who also teaches a freshman seminar class. “They know it was something serious, but it’s not really tied to their lives in any tangible way.”

But Karen Contreras, a student at the University of Illinois at Springfield who is originally from Palatine, said even if today’s students don’t personally remember it or don’t have a personal story about it, “we understand how momentous it was and continues to be.

“You don’t forget.”

Generation grew up with 9/11 repercussions It’s compelling for Paige Calvert to talk to older relatives and teachers who can describe exactly where they were and what they were doing when the events of Sept. 11, 2001, unfolded.

Calvert, a freshman from Pekin at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, only knows about the terrorist attacks through conversations and what she learned in school. For a person born less than eight months before 9/11, Calvert said the events “seem like a faraway historical moment.” She was first introduced to the tragedy as a second-grade student.

“It feels so close to many people,” Calvert added. “It’s crazy that

Slices of life

An unassuming hero

Many (lucky) daughters see their dad as heroes. I’m no exception.

He’s a modest guy, my dad. The polar opposite of ostentatious. A regular Joe – fitting because that’s his name. He wouldn’t like the idea of me calling him a hero, much less writing about it. Good thing he doesn’t read this column.

He served in the military – as did each of his five brothers. He was the youngest of the boys in his family and a Marine. Some of his older brothers fought in World War II. He came along just in time for Korea, where he served two tours of duty before injury pulled him back home.

Sometime during his first tour his mother fell ill and died. He was flown home for the funeral, but then headed back to serve his country.

That’s the kind of man he is. Loyal and dutiful.

After the war, he met and married my mom. They were together for 49 years 10 months. Her Alzheimer’s cheated them out of the big 5 – 0. At the end he served as her caregiver, which is the epitome of loyalty and love.

Much like Korea, Alzheimer’s required him to be a warrior. He fought hard, alongside my mom, against a formidable and deadly opponent. It was a gruesome existence. Alzheimer’s is hell.

She’s been gone nine years and he still signs her name – along with his – to all family birthday cards: “Love, Gram and Gramps.” I know he misses her more than I could ever fathom.

I was always aware he was awarded a Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in Korea.

The medal sat in a drawer in the nightstand next to his bed so I understood it must be important.

When I was a young girl he let me take it out and look at it on occasion. But he never talked about it – the medal or Korea.

As he’s gotten older, he’s more willing to open up about those days.

About what he experienced. About what he saw. About what he had to do. When he’s in the right mood he’ll share stories and even answer questions.

He was especially touched by the Korean children – innocents caught up in a war they could do nothing to avoid.

In recent years he’s talked about fighting in battles where the casualties were high. He witnessed

soldiers fighting alongside him die during combat. There wasn’t time for mourning or taking all the bodies back to camp. If a soldier ran out of ammunition and a deceased comrade’s gun was well equipped, someone with the ability took the gun and continued fighting.

“You took what you needed,” my dad said. And then he sighed and whispered, “War is hell.”

It is difficult for me to fathom, but it must have been a gruesome existence. And it lingers still today. As of February 2019, 7,667 American soldiers lost in Korea are still unaccounted for.

Family folklore is an interesting thing. My sister and I never knew the story behind the Purple Heart, but somehow we came to believe our dad had been caught in the crossfire during battle and was hit by shrapnel in his leg.

I don’t remember anyone ever telling me this. It was a fact I somehow mysteriously knew.

Family folklore. My dad didn’t talk about those times, and we followed suit because we understood it was a taboo subject so we continued to believe our own folklore.

Recently, however, he set the record straight.

“I wasn’t shot in the leg.”

My jaw must have dropped.

“It was in the head. It grazed me right here,” he said pointing to his temple. “Half an inch difference and I would’ve been dead.”

And I never would have been born.

Between Korea and Alzheimer’s, my dad’s been through at least two wars in his lifetime. That’s two more than anyone should have to endure. Through it all he’s been steadfast, loyal and humble. Just a regular Joe. A hero. In my humble opinion we could use more like him.

Rep. Conroy continues quest to battle opioid epidemic In an effort to combat the opioid epidemic, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) spoke at a recent event in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day Wednesday, Sept. 4.

“Raising awareness about addiction as a mental health issue and the opioid epidemic as a public mental health crisis is crucial to stopping it,” Conroy said. “I am grateful for yesterday’s event to act as a building block towards creating a strong support system and continuing the dialogue about mental health and addiction. I look forward to more events to provide resources and information to those in need and their loved ones.”

In 2018, there were nearly 100

deaths due to opioids in DuPage County. Although half of all Americans know someone affected by the opioid crisis, only a quarter receive the help they need to get better.

Wednesday’s event was held in conjunction with International Overdose Awareness Day, a global campaign to combat the severe rise in opioid addiction and deaths by reducing the stigma surrounding addiction and supporting those who need help or know someone that does. The event included training on how to administer Narcan, resource tables, and educational videos and discussions.

As chair of the House Mental

Health Committee, Conroy has advocated for a number of reforms to address the opioid epidemic as a mental health crises. She passed Senate Bill 1828 to encourage the creation of needle exchange programs across the state to prevent the spread of illnesses due to intravenous drug usage and needle stick injuries due to improper discarding. She also successfully advocated for an increase in mental health funding in this year’s bi-partisan, balanced budget to programs such as substance abuse prevention and the State Opioid Response Program.

Glowiak Hilton partners with ‘Cell Phones for Soldiers’ Area residents can lend a hand to help soldiers who are serving overseas stay in touch with their loved ones.

State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) has announced her office’s partnership with Cell Phones For Soldiers, a nonprofit organization that provides free communication services to active duty military personnel and veterans.

“Donating cellphones is a small way for us all to show our support to our brave men and women over-

seas,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This program helps keep families and loved ones connected when our military men and women often need it the most. Help us lend a hand to our brave heroes.”

Glowiak Hilton has designated her office a permanent drop off location for residents.

Residents can donate newer, gently-used cell phones for men and women in the military to use, or they can donate broken or outdated mobile phones to be recycled for parts, with the resulting funds used

to purchase prepaid international calling cards.

Cell Phones For Soldiers was founded in 2004 by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, then 12 and 13, and has since provided more than 300 million minutes of free talk time to members of the military stationed around the world.

Like Calvert, many students were introduced to the terrorist attack as elementary school students, though the introduction was usually to first responders and other heroes, not the graphic details of the day.

But this generation of students also grew up with the repercussions of 9/11. That means when they fly, they are getting to airports early and getting screened by the Transportation Security Administration. A slew of names and terms—Osama bin Laden, “no fly lists,” Guantanamo Bay and the War on Terror—connected with 9/11 are part of the students’ lexicon.

Emotion has also gripped them Faithe Metellus was born less than two weeks before 9/11.

Earlier this year, she went to New York and saw where the World Trade Center once stood.

“I didn’t have a personal connection to it,” said Metellus, a freshman at UIS from Northbrook, “but seeing the names and photos (at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum), that hit me.”

Going to the site, said Metellus, a pre-nursing major, “made me imagine what it was like for the people there. I feel empathy for them. I know people were traumatized.”

Metellus said her mother recalled that on 9/11 her grandfather burst into the room, screaming, “We’re at war!” They turned on the television, just in time to see one of the towers collapsing. “(My mother) had to lay down because she was in so much shock,” Metellus recalled being told.

Calvert remembered her mother, a third-grade teacher, telling her the only thing she could think about that day was getting home.

“They didn’t fully comprehend what was going to happen next,” Calvert said.

Understanding the magnitude Carolyn Peck, a UIS professor of psychology, weaves the 9/11 events into her graduate-level Death and Dying class. For those students who have no memory of 9/11, she encourages them to get some sense of the event to understand its magnitude.

“That makes it more than a history lesson,” Peck said. “Seeing those interviews with survivors or relatives of those who died that day, it really forces students to pay attention.”

Like many people, Christopher McDonald flipped on the television to watch the coverage of 9/11. Now, he said, people go to their laptop or smartphone.

“I think (students) understand how the world changed after 9/11,” Kristen Chenoweth said, “just like I understand after the assassination of President [John F.] Kennedy how security changed around the president.

“We look at what changed —our understanding of the Bill of Rights, freedom of speech, freedom of information—since 9/11. I think they know that it has changed, but they don’t know what it was before, so it’s hard for them to feel it.”

Zygfriend Kurzymski, a freshman at UIS from Park Ridge who was born just before 9/11, said he, too, grew up hearing derogatory terms leveled at people as terrorists. But even that understanding has changed as he has grown.

“We learned (in a high school psychology class) that no matter how unbiased you say you are, you do judge people based on what you learn from society,” said Kurzymski, a biology and pre-med major. “As I grew up, especially with the school shootings, it redefines what we perceive a terrorist as.

“That can make people even more scared today because they don’t have a bias. These days (a terrorist) could be almost anybody.”

McDonald has seen that too: In his “Early Start” classes, he has asked students to describe a “terrorist.” There was a time that mainly versions akin to bin Laden popped to mind for his students.

Last semester, McDonald said, students produced a description of a caucasian school shooter, rather than a “Middle Eastern” figure.

“This was a huge shock to me,” McDonald admitted.

Today’s college students said even if they don’t have their own memories of 9/11, they have been affected by it.

“I do think about it,” Metellus said of the anniversary. “It’s important to remember all the lives taken.”

Bruder said one of the most important post-9/11 lessons she has absorbed is the need to continue to spread the truth about what happened.

“It’s important for us to keep the stories alive and fresh,” Bruder said. “History is bound to repeat itself, but I hope to God it doesn’t.”

Prior to the bill, PBMs went largely unregulated in Illinois and were not subject to auditing or transparency laws despite the fact that they manage public money through the Medicaid program. The new law brings PBMs under regulation by the Illinois Department of Insurance beginning Jan. 1, 2020.

The new law requires insurers to apply third-party payments, discounts, vouchers and co-pay cards to a deductible, co-pay or out-of-pocket maximum associated with health insurance; allows pharmacists to recommend less expensive drugs; and prevents the denial of emergency medical treatment.

“PBMs line their pockets at the expense of small businesses and consumers who have no choice but to buy lifesaving drugs at exorbitant prices,” state Sen. Andy Manar, a Bunker Hill Democrat and the bill’s Senate sponsor, said. “For years these middle men have been able to exert their influence on the pharmaceutical industry with essentially no oversight. It’s time to crack down on unfair practices that target some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

Peace, love, music and feeling more alive With the 50th anniversary of Woodstock this past August, there was much hoop-dee-doo about three days of peace and music in one wild rainy weekend. That 1969 music festival featured thirty-two performances, some of which have become legendary, and a half million people joined together (some quite literally) in the spirit of love.

Music has the power to transform, transmute, transcend.

As Holly Brubach wrote, not about Woodstock, but music in general, “Music enters our bodies, commandeering the pulse in our veins, and reminds us that pleasure isn’t a matter of feeling good but of feeling more alive.”

Last year’s hit movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, about the band Queen and front man rock icon Freddie Mercury, showed how Queen was

able to achieve that commandeering of the pulse in our veins. The success of the film gave me opportunity to revisit my cherished memory of being there at Live Aid in London on July 13, 1985. The music absolutely entered our bodies and made us - all 72,000 of us - feel more alive.

If my life has a highlights reel, that day is in there, for sure.

The Live Aid concert sparked the idea with music legends in the US to create a music fundraiser to support America’s farmers. Farm

Aid was born September 1985 and has become an annual event. My Prince Charming and I will be there this year on September 21 for the all-day festival.

We love live music. It indeed makes us feel more alive.

For me, the pleasure of live music started young. The list of the myriad musical acts I have seen, ever since 8th grade, with my first concert – Andy Gibb at the Wisconsin State Fair – is turning out to be quite long. In fact, I just made a spreadsheet.

Live Aid of course is the largest with 23 acts (with the final being Sir Paul McCartney!). I took in eight performances at the Academy of Country Music awards in Las Vegas in 2009 (including Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.) In addition to those two Big Events, I’ve seen more than 75 different

artists in concert.

Different they are. From current loves like Pink, Brandi Carlile, and Robbie Williams, (wildly different!), to Lionel Ritchie and Pat Benatar and Prince in their hey days to Andrea Boccelli and Van Halen, my musical taste is not pigeon-holed.

My hubby and I have jumped on planes to fly across country to see some folks (Megan Hilty, Broadway/SMASH TV show star - twice!) and Vegas for Sir Robbie, but most of the time we go to Chicago or Madison or Milwaukee.

I’ve seen Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban before they filled stadiums; Bruce Springsteen before he sold out a Broadway run; and we saw Glen Campbell in his last tour before he died.

In the 80s, I saw bands across the spectrum: The Scorpions, The

Rolling Stones, and The Police.

Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel.

I’ve sung ballads with Barry Manilow and we’ve rocked out with Styx. (For the full list that I can remember to date, see www. kellyepperson.com).

Music is on most of the time here at home. Songs and artists, old and new, keep our home humming.

Every music event I’ve ever attended is packed with people who share a joint love for the performer and a desire to be swept away for a couple hours. We share a camaraderie of peace and love.

Live music brings out the best in us. Music enters our bodies, commandeering the pulse in our veins, and makes us feel more alive.

The 2019 Illinois Solar Tour, Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is a series of free tours of homes and businesses around the state, with three Elmhurst homes included in this year’s tour. One comment I saw was from a woman who said she would, and I quote, “Donate just about any organ to keep Ruth Bader Ginsburg alive for a good while longer.” Isn’t it ironic that they want her to live because she’s a Supreme Court justice who supports a procedure that terminates human life? I bet if some conservative on the court had cancer, they wouldn’t be so willing to donate an organ. *** Fly high above the ocean and you can see with your own eyes the curvature of the planet. Despite this easy access to empirical evidence and all of

the scientific proof, in this Trump era of “alternative facts” there has been a proliferation of flat earth groups.

Trump is a cruel man, he is a con-man and it appears that he had been taking Russian mob money for years. Talk about a lack of self-awareness. *** I saw a clip on the news from CNN the other day where someone interviewed a psychiatry professor from Duke University about Donald Trump.

I couldn’t believe what I heard. He was trying to argue that Trump is more de-

structive than Hitler, Stalin and Mao. This so-called professor could use a shrink himself, if you ask me. Either that, or he must have slept through 20th century history class. Donald Trump is a lot of things—he can be abrasive, arrogant, childish and downright mean.

But to compare Trump to dictators who’ve killed tens of millions of people is just asinine. This nutty professor is just another example of how unhinged most of you people on the left are. *** Most of the Democrat Party’s candidates for president have described “Climate Change”—whatever that is—as an existential threat. Are they aware the great Barack Obama and his wife are paying $15 million for an oceanfront estate on Martha’s Vineyard? If “Climate Change” is such a threat, why would someone spend millions of dollars on a beach home? I thought rising sea levels were going to doom us. By the way, will the Obamas welcome the homeless and illegal aliens on their vast 29-acre estate? McNamara said she went to work so she could raise the money to complete move to Hawaii, but instead met her future husband and stayed in the area, working as a nurse and moving to Villa Park.

She remembers seeing a newspaper article about the Lilac Town Chorus, and thought, “It sounds like something I would like,” so she attended a choral rehearsal.

Then under the direction of Ray Thompson, “I stayed and within three weeks he had me doing solos,” she continued, adding that before she became the director, after Thompson were Gene Ruffino and Phyllis Jones.

Patti Plomb, program manager for the park district, related that the chorus has been around as far back as she can remember, saying, “I’ve been here 32 years and it’s been [in existence] longer than that.”

On Thursday, Sept. 5, the chorus resumed its annual schedule of rehearsal from September through June, by warming up their vocal chords with a number of classic “oldies” from a songbook called “Happy Days Are Here Again: The Happy Singalong Book.”

The book of lyrics contains 155 songs from such composers as the Gershwin Brothers, Cole Porter and George M. Cohan, along with other favorites such as “Beer Barrel Polka,” “The Sidewalks of New York” and “Moonlight Bay.” The chorus on this particular Thursday sang songs requested by members, and the men sang about reporting back to their mother that a young lady was “making eyes” at them, which brought a jovial “woo hoo” from the rest of the chorus.

With the start of the new rehearsal schedule, “We’re having a very informal first day back,” McNamara explained of the Sept.

5 rehearsal, adding that the chorus will be performing for a variety of venues such as assisted living, retirement and memory care facilities.

The director said the chorus typically performs once a month at various facilities, which she coordinates with the respective activity directors. They also perform three or four times during the Christmas season and for Memorial Day. “They have a good following,” commented

Plomb. “They’re kept pretty busy.”

The repertoire of music is as varied as the members themselves; show tunes, Irish music, patriotic songs and Christmas favorites, among others.

They are “happy tunes, favorite tunes” that both the choral members and audiences enjoy, McNamara said, and that is by design.

It is the type of music senior living residents are familiar with, and she always encourages them to join in by singing with the chorus.

If that doesn’t infuriate you, I don’t know how to help you. Our government is broken. *** This is regarding the starting salary for teachers in Illinois that are going to increase to $40,000 a year. I don’t really have a problem with this. What I have a problem with is the pensions. The pension system needs to be reformed for teachers and public employees. The current system is unsustainable.

The chorus is pretty laid back, the director narrated, but when they are rehearsing for a concert, she admits to being somewhat of a taskmaster to get the chorus members sounding their best.

The chorus is well-versed when it comes to the standards they sing, but the director said with a chuckle that she “gets strict when preparing new music.”

The most difficult part of her job as director, McNamara quipped, is “trying to get them to look at [me] all at the same time.”

When asked about the age of the members, McNamara said the chorus is for individuals ages 60 and over. “I’m 83 and I know there are some [members] older than me,” she said with a smile.

McNamara said that besides knitting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren, being a choral director keeps her busy, adding, “I have to keep moving!”

She finds joy in leading the chorus, now about 25 members strong, saying that part of that is feeling good about “when people in the audience really enjoy it.”

At the same time, “You can tell they’re [chorus members] enjoying it too,” McNamara added, commenting that there is a sense of satisfaction in entertaining others.

Simply put, “We’re a bunch of seniors who love to sing,” the director said.

McNamara said she welcomes new members— and hopefully more men— and if anyone is interested, “I would encourage them.

They would enjoy themselves” in a no-pressure, laid-back activity providing seniors with a social outlet that includes a common love of music.

The Lilac Town Chorus meets Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Community Building, 433 E. St. Charles Road, Lombard, on the corner of Grace and Parkside. There is no fee to join.

While Patel’s focus is clearly on her studies, she also is involved in

extracurricular activities that make her a well-rounded student. She is Vice President of National Honor Society, she has been in Key Club all four years of her high school career and she has participated in Italian Club and raising funds for UNICEF. Patel is looking to apply to Northwestern University, Loyola University Chicago and Elmhurst College.

She plans to study medicine and hopes to become a radiologist.

Terra Vista to host art auction benefit Sept. 15

4-H announces county fair winners In July, 4-H and community members celebrated the culmination of the whole 4-H year with the annual 4-H shows at the DuPage County Fair.

“Our 4-H members work for months in their project areas to learn new things and develop skills, which they then demonstrate through 4-H exhibits and shows at the annual DuPage County Fair,” said Andrea Farrier, 4-H Youth Development Program coordinator.

“4-H conference judging provides

4-H youth with valuable experience and feedback to continue growing and learning into the next year.”

DuPage County 4-H member Tatum Keene said the fair is one of her favorite parts of 4-H. “We hang out with friends, show our projects and learn more for next year.”

In 4-H, youth can explore scores of projects in seven areas of study—animal science, career and leadership development, creative arts, environmental sciences, glob-

al civic engagement, healthy living and nutrition, and STEM. “I like that you can choose to do projects that interest you, and that you wouldn’t normally have the option to explore,” said 4-H member Nuha Hussain.

Both Keene and Hussain said they also appreciate the opportunities for leadership and enjoy doing community service.

In addition to the project work shown at fair, 4-H members volunteer for their communities through-

out the year. In turn, at the annual fair, scores of adult community members give back to 4-H through sharing their time and expertise at the 4-H events, and by sponsoring awards.

“We whole-heartedly thank all the DuPage County Fair volunteers, 4-H award sponsors, and 4-H superintendents, judges and other volunteers for giving our youth such an important experience each year,” said Farrier.

“Thank you also to our 4-H

members and families for another special year.”

Guitarra Azul Ensemble returns to Bethel

Grammy-nominated performer part of Music@Bethel Concert Series Guitarra Azul’s upcoming 2020 CD release “Cafe Bolero.”

EAG Fall Members Show ushers in Arts DuPage Month The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) is hosting its Fall Members Show, featuring a variety of original artwork created by its members. The exhibit is on display now through October 11, 2019, in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave., in Wilder Park. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, Sept.

It’s official – the month of October has been declared Arts DuPage Month (ADM), a 31-day celebration of the arts throughout DuPage County. All month long, local artists and arts organizations will host special events and offer exclusive incentives for the community.

Warriors move to 1-1 by holding off Huskies

Willowbrook kicks off conference play with this week’s home game

The Willowbrook football team improved to 1-1 by beating Oak Park/ River Forest 21-6 on Friday night in Oak Park.

The Warriors held a 7-0 halftime lead. The Huskies (1-1) cut Willowbrook’s advantage to 7-6 with a third-quarter touchdown. The Warriors responded with a pair of touchdown runs by senior quarterback Sam Tumilty, who scored once in the third quarter and once during the final period.

The Warriors scored their first-half touchdown on Tumilty’s pass of about 30 yards to senior Everett Stubblefield. Sophomore kicker Izzy Manning added the first of her three extra-point kicks to give Willowbrook a 7-0 lead.

The Warriors will open the West Suburban Gold Conference season with this Friday’s home game against Downers Grove South (1-1). Willowbrook has posted perfect 6-0 conference records in each of the last two seasons.

Fenton football team 2-0 after conference win against West Chicago First 2-0 start since 2011, last time squad made the playoffs

Fenton’s football team has done something it had not experienced since 2011.

The Bison’s 51-13 Upstate Eight Conference win against West Chicago at home in Bensenville put them at 2-0 overall and 2-0 in UEC action.

The last time Fenton started the season 2-0 was back in 2011 when it finished 7-2 and qualified for the playoffs. Fenton hasn’t enjoyed a playoff berth since that same 2011 season.

Fenton opened the season with a 33-0 win against Elgin Larkin in its first game in the Upstate Eight Conference.

“The common theme with the first two games is we executed both offensively and defensively,” said Fenton coach Matt Lynch.

Lynch said his players are getting after it on Friday nights. “I like how hard our players are playing. They are playing extremely hard,” he said. “I like how we are competing.”

Lynch saw positives from where the team was at after the Larkin game to where it was at after the West Chicago win. “Really, it’s that our focus always has been about us and about us getting better,” he said. “We went out there to erase some mistakes we made against Larkin and to work on some technique.

At first glance against West Chicago, some of the stuff was OK and some of the stuff we still have to keep working on.”

The execution factor was positive in the West Chicago win.

“We ran our offense and we ran our defense,” Lynch said. “We ask ourselves are we running and executing the offense and the same thing with the defense. That’s it. It’s all we care about.

It’s a whole team approach.”

Lynch said the list of players who have enjoyed strong starts the first two weeks is lengthy. “We have numerous kids playing well,” he said. “Our receivers are playing well, our offensive line is playing well, the running back position is playing well. It’s not about any one guy. Collectively we are playing good football and because of that everybody is standing out.”

Lynch said the message to his 2-0 team after the West Chicago win was simple. “Enjoy it tonight, because we go back to work tomorrow,” he said.

“Our focus now is on Streamwood (Week 3 foe). We just want to win the day and that’s what we talk about every day. It’s a long season.”

But a season thus far that has rewarded Lynch’s squad handsomely.

“I’m absolutely so happy for the kids,” he said. “They bust their tails and they continue to work hard. It’s great to see them rewarded at the end of the week for all their hard work.”

Next up is another UEC game at Streamwood Friday.

“The focus is Streamwood,” he said.

“We absolutely still have a long way to go. That’s why the games are played on Friday night.”

Fenton has outscored its first two foes 84-13. It took Fenton four games last year to score 84 points.

Warriors in action

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team won three of five matches and finished in third place in its own eightteam invitational, which took place on Friday and Saturday.

The Warriors played three matches on Friday. They defeated Glenbard North and West Chicago in their first two matches. Willowbrook lost its final match on Friday, dropping a three-game battle to Addison Trail. The Warriors suffered a 25-21, 2927 loss to Metea Valley (the invite’s eventual champion) on Saturday morning.

Willowbrook finished the invitational with Saturday’s three-game victory over Glenbard South. The Warriors held an overall record of 4-4 at the end of Saturday’s play. Senior Payton Ceh (No. 5-above), made a total of 90 digs for the Warriors during the team’s five matches in the invite. Addison Trail boys’ cross country team splits WSC Gold double dual

The Addison Trail boys’ cross country team split a recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division double dual with Willowbrook and Proviso East.

The Blazers defeated Proviso East 17-32 and dropped a 24-33 decision to Willowbrook.

Coach Brad Donaldson’s team is coming off a fifth-place conference finish a year ago, but returns a number of key performers from that group.

Junior Dylan Moran is back.

He was a sectional qualifier last year and ran a season-best time at that postseason meet. Donaldson noted Moran is aiming to break the school record this year.

“Dylan is our top runner with the biggest potential right now,” said Donaldson. “He is the race leader, and I’m really excited to see how good he can be. He is a competitor at heart and will challenge himself against the best. I look forward to some great races.”

Senior Julian Lara also returns.

“Julian is a tremendous leader for

us,” said Donaldson. “His leadership ability keeps everyone on task.”

Senior Jonathan Ramos is the Blazers’ No. 3 returning scorer from 2018. “Jonathan also is a tremendous leader,” Donaldson noted.

Junior Cole Greaves also is back and Donaldson said he will be a key scorer for the Blazers. “Cole has tremendous upside with great foot speed,” he said. “He just needs to carry it over distance.”

Sophomore Alex Martinez was a regional team member as a freshman last fall. “Alex is only a sophomore and has tremendous potential in cross country,” said Donaldson. “Seeing where he is at this year after track season is amazing. It could be a real battle to see if he can catch up to Dylan.”

Moran and Martinez finished second and third in the double dual against Willowbrook and Proviso East.

Key newcomers to the group include sophomores Max Ojeda and Aaron Paz (transfer).

Willowbrook girls’ volleyball coach Irene Mason has seen her team get quite defensive out of the gates this fall.

“Overall, the team is doing an excellent job in serve-receive,” Mason said. “We’re passing the ball consistently and playing great defense.”

Mason pointed out Willowbrook graduated eight seniors from last year and has lost one returning player to injury this season, which means plenty of new faces are becoming acclimated to the varsity game.

“We have improved on getting up to speed with the game,” she said.

“We have a lot of players who have had to adjust to the speed of the game at the varsity level.”

Mason added improvements also are being seen at the net as well as in transition. “Our blocks have gotten much quicker, as well as our transitions,” she said.

Individually, Mason has seen

well-rounded improvements from sophomore Kyla Ostrowski. “Kyla has stepped up in all area of her play; passing, serving, defense and scoring,” she said. “She is quickly emerging into the confident outside hitter we’ve been looking for.”

Ostrowski and freshman Natalie Cipriano are two of those younger players making an impact. “I’ve been most impressed by the ability of some of our younger players to step up and perform in key roles,” said Mason. “Kyla and Natalie have really stood out and led our team offensively.”

Junior Grace Reckamp was lauded for her leadership. “Grace has shown great leadership throughout the off-season and that has continued into the start of this season,” said Mason. “She commands the offense for us, and her set selection and winning attitude have been outstanding.”

Willowbrook continues to benefit from the defensive play of senior all-conference returner Payton Ceh.

“Payton’s ability to read and react to the opponent’s swing has been very impressive, as well as her overall court vision and ability to see the opponent’s defense and place the ball in open areas,” Mason explained. “I’ve also been impressed

by Payton’s ability to bounce back after her season-ending injury last year. She is back to dominating the back court and leading our team defensively.”

In recent action, the Warriors dropped a 19-25, 25-23, 25-19 non-conference match to Glenbard North. The loss put the Warriors at 1-2 overall.

Ceh had one kill and 17 digs.

Senior Alondra Mendoza had five blocks. Ostrowski had two kills, one ace and eight digs. Reckamp had five kills, two aces, three blocks, 10 digs and 11 assists. Sophomore Katie Linnig had six assists and eight digs.

The Warriors played District 88 neighbor Addison Trail earlier this week.

Donaldson has a deeper roster this season.

“Our overall depth and fitness level has improved dramatically,” he said. “We have a larger group of athletes focused on competing this year, more so than just training.”

Focus is something Donaldson is stressing to his runners.

“I think overall focus and staying focused on the season goals is going to be the key,” he said. “They are a group that over the next two years can be really good. They just need to keep those beliefs at the forefront and not be swayed by individual meet results or the gen-

eral ups and downs of the season.”

Donaldson said Downers Grove South and Morton look to be key contenders in the WSC Gold once again.

“We are focused on spots 3-5 and looking to be competitive with Willowbrook, Leyden and Hinsdale South,” he said. “We are hoping to push them for the middle of the conference and make it a tight race in October. We’re also focused on getting out of the regional as a team, rather than as just individuals.”

Block improves for Fenton boys’ golf team Bison boys’ soccer team also on the upswing

The Fenton boys’ golf team sported a 1-2 record in Upstate Eight Conference action through late last week.

Additionally, coach Rick Johnson was impressed with Patrick Block’s 89 for 18 holes at the recent Fenton invitational at White Pines in Bensenville.

“Patrick is really improving from last year,” said Johnson.

Johnson noted additional team positives on the practice links. “We are practicing well,” he said.

“We have a very competitive team. We are looking to take that attitude to the course (during meets).”

Play around the green and putting also has improved for the Bison. “The short game work is starting to pay off,” said Johnson.

In addition to Block, Andrew Hoffing and Matt Riley have taken steps forward.

“Patrick, Andrew and Matt are starting to get themselves around the course, even when they don’t

have their best stuff that day,” Johnson noted.

Fenton has seven freshmen in the program.

“We are very young, so we are looking to get better each day,” Johnson said.

Fenton boys soccer The Fenton boys’ soccer team was 0-2 in its first two contests.

Fenton lost a recent 3-2 decision to Addison Trail at the Joe Novy tournament hosted by Addison Trail.

In that game against Addison Trail, Jason Fuentes and Chris Hernandez each had a goal for the Bison.

“We are still working to build team chemistry,” Fenton coach Victor Ruiz said.

Ruiz noted Fenton is working hard to improve in “all aspects of the game,” and is seeing improvements in all areas of the field.

“We are getting there,” he added.

“In our first two games I was happy with the effort they put in.”

Fenton opened Upstate Eight Conference play earlier this week at home against Streamwood.

Fenton girls volleyball Fenton’s girls’ volleyball team was slated to host South Elgin and Addison Trail this week before heading to the West Chicago tournament on Saturday.

Willowbrook boys’ golf team squares off against Hinsdale South Rattana off to strong start for Warriors

The Willowbrook boys’ golf team dropped a recent 146-167 West Suburban Conference Gold Division contest to Hinsdale South at par-32 Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

The loss put the Warriors at 1-2 overall on the season.

Senior Logna Rattana led the way for the Warriors with a 35. Freshman Brett Vandergrift added a 41, while junior John “Wedge” Donovan had a 45 and junior Andrew Rugg finished with a 46. Hinsdale South’s Grant Blum was the medalist with a 34.

Earlier, the Warriors partook in a pair of invitationals. Willowbrook hosted its annual John Hamman 18-hole scramble at Sugar Creek.

The Warriors shot a 1-under-par 63 to take seventh. Joey Zopel, Jake Cieslak, Rugg, Bennet Fleming and Max Hirsch competed at Sugar Creek for the Warriors.

The Warriors sent a split-squad up the road to Bensenville and White Pines where they shot a 370 and took 21st at the Fenton invitational.

Of note at White Pines, Logan Rattana shot a 78, which earned him a 26th-place finish and an individual medal at the event, which coach Gary Walker termed a “loaded invite.”

In addition to Rattana’s 78, Vandergrift had a 90, senior Utah Keehner shot 99 and “Wedge” Donovan

ended with a 103 for 18.

Walker noted Willowbrook has 17 frosh-soph golfers and eight varsity competitors. “We have a very healthy program,” he said. “Coach (Scott) Forcash and I are very happy to have those young Willowbrook athletes out for our sport.”

Walker has seen an uptick in practice performance as well. “What we do daily at practice has improved,” he said. “Coming off the summer, many of our athletes are doing other sports. We offer them highly structured practices to help them reach their potential.”

Rattana has been a standout thus far for the Warriors. “Logan has been our leader for a few years now,” said Walker. “He just fired a 78 at the Fenton invite. We have seven other athletes on the varsity who are a complete joy to work with and coach. We are looking forward to seeing how each of them ends the year.”

Walker said the month of September should be a fruitful one for the Warriors. “The season is going according to plan,” he said. “We always make a big jump in September. I always am impressed by how teachable and coachable our athletes are.”

Willowbrook was scheduled to return to action earlier this week against Leyden in a WSC Gold match at Sugar Creek.

Addison Trail girls’ cross country team poised for improvement

Addison Trail girls’ cross country coach Kristen Olson has reasons for optimism.

The Blazers return a number of key runners off a 2018 team that finished fifth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Divison a year ago.

Back is junior Viviana Sanfilippo, who was a 2018 all-WSC Gold performer and a sectional qualifier.

Her personal record last year of 18:39 is the second-fastest time in Addison Trail girls’ cross-country history.

Also returning is sophomore Maddie Ford, who was a freshman all-WSC Gold selection and her 20:48 PR ranks sixth on the program’s all-time list.

Juniors Jina Patel and Stephanie Arreguin also return from last year’s varsity.

Key newcomers to the team include junior Elizabeth Guerrero, freshman Ximena Juarez and junior Jade Campos. Guerrero is in her first year of cross country, but was third in Addison Trail’s top seven in the Blazers’ season-opening meet against Willowbrook and Proviso East.

Juarez also is in her first year and was Addison Trail’s fourth runner in the Willowbrook and Proviso triangular, while Campos, another high school rookie in the sport, was the squad’s fifth runner.

“We have an enthusiastic group of new runners who already are making efforts to continue the strong team bond that is Addison Trail cross country,” Olson said.

Olson said the team is hard at work continuing to develop its competitive perspective and putting in the miles to match it, especially in its summer preparation.”

In that season opener against Willowbrook and Proviso East, Addison Trail scored 15 points and defeated the Pirates and lost 24-37 to Willowbrook.

Sanfilippo won the double dual in a time of 19:49. Ford was third in 21:57.

“We are hopeful that as our new runners develop during the season that we can continue to improve our overall conference place,” Olson said.

Addison Trail football team findings its way Blazers open conference play Friday in Maywood

Earlier last week, Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. noted he thought his team might have to work its way through some growing pains in the early going of the season.

“It’s where we are at right now,” he said. “I assumed we would go through some growing pains and it showed in our game against Conant (Week 1) in terms of what we did.”

Addison Trail lost to Conant 54-7 in Week 1 and then dropped a 41-0 decision to Downers Grove North in Week 2 to drop to 0-2.

“From an offensive standpoint we had seven players who had never played in a varsity game before,” said Parpet Jr. of opening night. “On defense it was six and that includes sophomores, juniors and one senior. We have a lack of experience and it really showed in what it means to compete in a varsity football game.

“We had two sophomores, two juniors and a senior on the offensive line and that shows too. We had an overall lack of experience, but we are going to get better.”

Parpet Jr. said the Conant game was a good measuring stick.

“We needed something to assess where we were at,” he said. “We went out there inexperienced and it showed.”

Parpet Jr. said the message to his group has been simple. “I told each guy in the room that

they need to get better at two things,” he said of last week’s preparation. “If we do that, we’ll be OK. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to continue to get better and rise to the occasion.

We are going to figure it out. We are going to go through some ups and downs, but this group is going to stay grounded and we are going to keep moving forward. Against Conant we never quit and we could have handed them our hat when that 40-point rule kicked in. The kids played hard for 48 minutes. We’re not hanging our heads and feeling sorry for ourselves. These guys want to rise to the challenge and get better.”

Parpet Jr. has been pleased with the overall work of veteran AJ Carlson. “AJ is one of our senior captains who is out there making plays,” the coach said. “He is our playmaker.”

Parpet Jr. said Addison Trail cannot overly obsess about who is on the schedule each week.

“We will be outmanned a lot of the weeks, but this is a fight between us and us,” he said. “We have to continue to get better. You compete to get better. Successes are measured in a lot of ways.

Nobody in this building wants Addison Trail football to win more games than I do. We have to focus on the weekly successes. These guys are positive and resilient. One particular week does not make a season.”

Both Willowbrook cross country teams were in action at Saturday’s Mike Kuharic Invitational hosted

by Lyons Township.

Willowbrook’s boys’ team was 13th out of 15 teams at the varsity level with a score of 312. Junior Tyler King finished 29th in the 3-mile race with a time of 16:26.97. Senior Brandon Heselton was 68th with a time of 17:36.54. Junior Nick Leo was 71st with a time of 17:47.93, while junior Thomas Florey was 76th with a time of 17:57.53. Junior Ben Cunneen was 80th with a time of 18:08.88.

At the boys’ JV level, sophomore Damien Rocha finished 70th with a time 19:04.12. The Warriors were 12th as a team in the JV race.

At the boys’ freshman level, Charlie Hayes was 33rd with a time of 13:02.61 for two miles. Willowbrook’s freshmen were seventh with 205 points.

Willowbrook’s varsity is coming off a 2018 season where it finished

fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

Top returning runners for the Warriors this season include King, Heselton and Leo. “Tyler most likely will be our top runner,” Willowbrook coach T.J. Artman said.

“Brandon is a strong senior with leadership who is ready to work and Nick is a strong junior who wants to be competitive and win.”

Artman said strengths for this year’s group will be team work and its positive attitude.

Artman also has been pleased with the team’s progress in the strength and mileage departments since last season.

Artman said staying healthy and having fun every day will be keys to a successful season.

In terms of the WSC Gold Division, Artman said Downers Grove South is the team to beat, “then who knows?” he said.

The Warriors opened the season with a dual against conference foes Addison Trail and Proviso East.

Willowbrook won against both

Willowbrook’s girls’ team also was in action at Lyons Township.

Willowbrook’s varsity was seventh in the 14-team event with 182 points. Junior Melissa Martinez finished 24th in the 3-mile race; she completed the race in 20:03.45.

Senior Madeleine Wilkie was 28th in 20:26.66. Senior Michelle Villalobos was 39th in 20:55.67. Junior Gracie Tumilty was 45th in 21:24.77. Junior Daylee Braden was 48th in 21:49.91.

Isabel Willett was 21st out of 264 runners in the JV race. She covered the course in 23:08.04.

Willowbrook’s freshman girls’ team was sixth with 145 points.

Amelia Barrington took eighth with a time of 14:32.16 for 2.2 miles.

Yazmin Setaram was 17th in 15:23.70, while Cailey Dotson was 23rd in 15:42.84.

Lily Weder was sixth in the sophomore race in 21:15.85, while Paulina Minjares was 37th in 24:21.29.

It’s a new day for the Willowbrook girls’ tennis team.

The Warriors are under the direction of new coach Ed Delacruz, who is fresh off a stint as Willowbrook’s head boys’ soccer coach.

son with a 6-1 non-conference loss to neighbor Glenbard East and then dropped a 7-0 contest to Wheaton St. Francis.

“We have gotten off to a rough start, but our schedule is top-heavy with many talented teams in the beginning,” Delacruz noted. “I know the wins will pile up soon.”

Willowbrook is coming off a 2018 season where it took third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division and finished with an overall 10-5 mark in dual matches.

Fenton’s girls’ cross country team is starting its first season as a member of the Upstate Eight Conference.

And what better way to start anew with an experience-heavy roster.

Coach Frank Kekstadt has exactly that with six of the team’s top seven runners back from a 2018 team that took fifth in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division and advanced to a sectional where it took seventh as a team.

Back for Fenton are juniors Audrey Benitez, Guadalupe Honorato, Angelika Gasior, Amy Czauderna and Lissette Hernandez, along with sophomore Carolina Rosas.

Top newcomers for the Bison include freshman Tania Miranda, sophomore Ally Durkowski and freshman Samantha Matuk.

The only loss to Fenton’s starting lineup was Ruth Kirkwood to graduated.

Kirkwood qualified for the state meet in her senior season.

“It is possible that if our top newcomers show consistent improvement, we will be a better team,” Kekstadt said. “We have better depth than last year as well, and that is our greatest improvement. We will have 11 girls competing for our top seven spots.”
