County Clerk seeks election judges Pay is double due to COVID-19 supplement funding

In celebration of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day on Sept.

1, DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek’s office has announced that pay will double for election judges for the 2020 Presidential election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Election judges working on Election Day will receive $130 in base pay and another $130 as a COVID-19 supplement for a total of $260.

Election judges working during Early Voting will receive $10 per hour in base pay and another $10 per hour as a COVID-19 supplement.

Kaczmarek’s office is also reporting that polling places will be equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitation supplies, and social distancing signage and floor markers.

Training for judges available online In order to protect the health and safety of election judges, DuPage County is implementing a new online judge training system to allow judges to be trained from home rather than being required to do so in person. This training covers a complete walk-through of procedures and process from start to finish of Election Day. Election judge pay increases, PPE and the online training system for the Nov 3rd election will be paid for out of CARES Act funding provided with the bipartisan support of the DuPage County Board.

While their specific duties vary, election judges are in charge of setting up and preparing the polling place, welcoming voters, verifying voter registrations and issuing ballots. Election judges also help ensure voters understand the voting process by demonstrating how to use voting equipment and explaining voting

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, there were 15,339 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 539 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 43 new cases and one deaths related to COVID-19, a male in his 70s.

Joseph Schrantz, 91 Joseph Andrew Schrantz, who was born July 30, 1929, in Maricopa, Ariz., passed away peacefully on Sept. 1, 2020, at the age of 91, surrounded by his family and “with Angels by his side.”

Staring out the window, of St. Mary’s Convent and orphanage in Phoenix, Ariz., as his mother slowly walked away, Joe, at the young age of 3, and his older siblings could not have known it would be the last time they would ever be with her. Joe believes that he saw her once more in the back of the church as he made his First Communion. He would spend the rest of his life searching for his mother, to no avail, not even a death certificate. In 1939, Joe was separated from his siblings and, over the years, was placed in four different foster homes.

After foster home placement, Joe entered the famous Boys Town in Omaha, Neb. Once there, Joe was assigned many different duties such as, washing dishes, cleaning and serving food. Eventually, Joe earned the high privilege of acting as Father Flannigan’s butler. Remarkably, he was elected Mayor of Boys Town after only two years and proceeded to be valedictorian of his graduating class of 45 boys.

Upon graduation of Boys Town, Joe joined the U. S. Navy. He saved every penny of his salary, keeping in mind his goal of earning a college degree. After three years, he had earned a modest sum of $1,600. While in the Navy, he met his Sweetie Pie, Dorothy O’Donnell. It was love at first sight.

Joe applied and was accepted at the University of Notre Dame, paying his own tuition of $250 per semester. He rented a room at 330 N. Notre Dame Avenue for $1 a day. His college days were littered with obstacles from juggling a full class schedule and a fulltime job with a local grocer, to being called back to active duty in the Navy for the Korean War, to marrying and having two of his eventual eight children. Despite these exceptionally difficult circumstances, in 1957 Joe succeeded in graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in journalism.

Joe was eternally optimistic, when asked how he was, he would reply, “I feel like a million bucks,” or “couldn’t be better.” When visiting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he would always say “you’re growin’ like a weed.” He had a great positive attitude. He was extremely welcoming and unconditionally compassionate.

He was a voracious learner. After mastering a subject, he would quickly dive head-first into a new subject, only to master it as well. A brilliant man.

Lastly, Joe will be remembered by the great pride he took as he talked about and demonstrated the 100 pushups he did every single day.

Joe was loved by many and will be greatly missed. “We love you.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the DuPage County Clerk Election Division announced that special assistance in voter registration is available to the elderly and voters with disabilities through the Division’s office.

The Division can assist in the arrangement of voter registration appointments with deputy registrars for the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

All eligible registered voters, including those who are physically unable to get to their polling place, are entitled to receive a ballot by mail or in person. An individual may request a ballot to vote by mail up through Oct. 29, 2020. An individual may vote early at the Election Division office, beginning Sept. 24, 2020, through Nov. 2, 2020, or early vote in person at one of the County’s Early Voting sites,

starting Oct. 19, 2020, through Monday, Nov. 2, 2020.

Polling locations during Early Voting and on Election Day will be equipped with touch-screen voting machines to enable those who are blind, visually impaired or have limited dexterity to vote privately without assistance.

Additionally, a voter may request assistance with marking their ballot. At the polling place on Election Day assistance may be given

by Judges of Election (one from each political party), a friend or a relative. Assistance with marking the ballot will also be at Early Voting sites.

Montini honors recipients of Guertler Memorial Scholarship

Villa Park resident Steven Guertler established scholarship in his mother’s name

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard congratulated two recipients of the Mary C. Guertler Memorial Scholarship on Monday, Aug. 31. The scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mary Guertler, who had three children and three grandchildren graduate from Montini. Her son, Steven Guertler, a 1979 Montini graduate and a Villa Park resident, established the scholarship in her name.

Montini juniors Isabelle Juda and Sarah Ernat, both of Lombard, were selected for this year’s scholarship.

Applicants were asked to discuss their participation in parish and community programs. Juda and Ernat impressed the Guertler family with their extensive service backgrounds. Both young women are members of Montini Catholic’s Peer Ministry group and are very involved in the faith life at Montini and in their parish (Sacred Heart in Lombard) and community.

Mary Guertler’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. She attended Mass daily and was committed to Catholic education. She

Our local communities believe in ending hunger. In 2020 these communities will continue to fight against the new challenges of disease and disaster that leave many people hungry. Over the past 30 years the local walk, the Great Prairie Trail CROP Hunger Walk has been active in raising funds for hunger relief around the world and support local food pantries in Lombard, Villa Park, Addison and Glendale Heights. Last year the walk raised $20,000, of which $5,000 remained here locally. This year, people need to register online.

Villa Park’s Community Pride Commission is joining the Villa Park Environmental Concerns Commission to hold the second Villa Park Spring Sweep (Fall Edition) recycling and shredding drop-off event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 19. This year’s event was moved from the spring to this month because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The drive-through Spring Sweep will take place on Home Avenue, near Villa Park Village Hall. Traffic will enter from Harvard Avenue, heading north, and exit onto Ardmore Avenue. Entrance onto Harvard from St. Charles Road will be prohibited during the event.

Participants will recycle from the safety of their vehicles by driving to each station. Volunteers will collect and remove items from vehicles for disposal. Masks are required. Attendees are asked to remain in their vehicles at all times. Please load all items into your vehicle’s trunk or hatchback, if possible.

The event is free to Villa Park residents, but a fee will apply for residents who drop off paint for recycling. While non-residents are welcome, they will have to pay additional fees for document shredding ($10) and electronics recycling ($20), in addition to the paint recycling fees.

The drop-off stations will be set up in the following order; participants should load their vehicles accordingly to allow volunteers to easily remove items from vehicles.

Trinity Lutheran Church offers prayer group and support group for veterans, first-responders

Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 300 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park, invites veterans and their families, along with first-responders, to its prayer group, called Growing in Prayer.

Each Wednesday, beginning on Sept. 23, the prayer group will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the church will offer meetings of a support group called Operation Barnabas.

The meetings will feature Dr. Stephen Boudro, a veteran from the Vietnam War. Coffee will be provided. In addition to meeting Dr. Boudro, participants will meet Danya Vanzura-Rogers, the wife of Trinity Lutheran Pastor Rob Rogers. Mrs. Rogers is a Navy mom who understands the stresses of having a child serve in the military.

Deadline to submit entries is Oct. 31; Patriot’s Pen essay is open to students in grades 6-8; Voice of Democracy is for high school students

The Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 2801 Auxiliary will participate in the upcoming 2020-21 Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy youth scholarship competitions.

The Patriot’s Pen competition is for students in grades 6-8. Those students will complete an essay by writing an answer to this year’s theme question—“What is patriotism to me?”

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition is open to all high school students. Contestants will write an essay responding to the question, “Is this the country the founders envisioned?” In addition to writing a response, the high school

students will make audio recordings of their essays.

Students who take part in the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essays can advance to four different levels of competition—VFW Post, VFW District, VFW State and National. Students can earn more scholarship funds by advancing to each level.

The deadline to submit essays to the post is Oct. 31.

The post has to accept essays in a special way this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students can attempt to get an entry form from one of their teachers, or they could obtain an entry form by emailing the post at vfwpost2801auxiliary@gmail.com.

Cullerton urges qualified residents to apply to be snowplow drivers this winter The Illinois Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for seasonal snow and ice removal positions, and State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is urging qualified DuPage County residents to apply.

“We rely on our snowplow drivers to keep our roads safe during the winter season,” Cullerton said. “This is a great opportunity for those struggling to find employment during this awful pandemic.”

Through the department’s annual “snowbird” program, temporary snowplow drivers are hired every

year on a full-time and on-call basis.

To be considered, applicants must have a commercial driver’s license.

A pre-employment physical, vision test, and drug and alcohol screening are also required.

Applicants will be selected based on availability, job-related experience and qualifications.

Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

Cullerton urges qualified residents to apply to be snowplow drivers this winter The Illinois Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for seasonal snow-and-ice removal positions, and State Senator Tom Cullerton is urging qualified DuPage County residents to apply.

“We rely on our snowplow drivers to keep our roads safe during the winter season,” Cullerton said. “This is a

great opportunity for those struggling to find employment during this awful pandemic.”

Through the department’s annual “snowbird” program, temporary snowplow drivers are hired every year on a full-time and on-call basis. To be considered, applicants must have a commercial driver’s license. A pre-em-

ployment physical, vision test, and drug and alcohol screening are also required.

Applicants will be selected based on availability, job-related experience and qualifications. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

This guidance will also apply to other facilities with food services areas that are currently subject to the Restore Illinois guidance, such as indoor recreational facilities, museums and entertainment venues.

New guidelines went into effect last week and will require face coverings to be worn both in indoor and outdoor dining settings in all 11 regions in the state. Full guidelines may be found on the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) website.

“Illinois residents continue to take important steps to protect the safety of our loved ones and neighbors. However, due to a recent uptick in cases, we must take additional precautionary steps when we are out in public,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “Based on conversations and input from industry and business leaders, the State of Illinois is implementing updated guidelines which will allow restaurants and bars across the state to stay open while helping protect the health and safety of patrons and staff.”

The revised guidelines build on both the statewide Restore Illinois guidelines as well as the tiered mitigation strategies that are implemented when a region sees consistent increased test positivity or hospital admissions. The latest data on regional test positivity and hospitals can be found on the Illinois Department of Public Health(IDPH) website. More information about the Restore Illinois guidelines and tiered mitigation measures can be found on the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) website.

Patrons are currently required to wear a mask whenever on premises, except while eating and drinking

at the table or bar. The new guidelines ensure that while seated, interactions between business staff and patrons can happen safely to prevent possible spread of the virus.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) has worked with industry leaders, who have requested heightened measures to protect the safety of workers in light of the recent increase in cases, and to further reduce the risk of spread that could harm business operations.

“From the beginning, DCEO has worked closely with our colleagues at IDPH as well as industry leaders to create guidance that business owners can implement and use to keep

employees and customers safe, and that will ultimately help guide the reopening of our economy,” said DCEO Acting Director Michael Negron. “In partnership with industry leadership at IRA and employee protection organizations representing hospitality staff across the state, our latest guidelines will put the health and safety of our hospitality industry employees first and allow consumers to have confidence that Illinois bars and dining establishments are taking all precautions to allow a safer experience.”

The state’s updated guidelines for face coverings reinforce the message our Association has been driving home for months: ‘Covered Faces Keep Open Places,’ ”said Sam Toia,

president and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association. “Face coverings will protect both diners and team members during this critical time. If we want to stay on a steady path with reopening, it is up to every individual to work collectively toward this common goal.”

Phase 4 regulations remain in effect in 10 out of the 11 regions across the state. Currently, bars and restaurants remain open with capacity restrictions to allow for social distancing—with seated parties of 10 or less, tables spaced 6 feet apart, and standing areas at no more than 25 percent capacity indoors. Region four is currently operating under increased mitigations following a sharp increase

in its COVID-19 positivity rate, and Region seven is instituting additional mitigation measures that took effect last week in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

This updated guidance, which can be a model for other states, underscores the need for a vital policy on how restaurant businesses should reopen safely, equitably and responsibly.”

To assist bars and restaurants with implementing new safety measures, DCEO has provided an updated industry toolkit on its website. The toolkit provides revised health guidelines materials, including new signage that may be displayed at restaurants and bars to encourage compliance.

The Willowbrook boys golf team began its 2020 season with last week’s dual-meet victory over Leyden at White Pines Golf Club’s West Course in Bensenville.

The Warriors earned a team score of 163 in the Sept. 3 dual meet, while Leyden posted a team score of 196. Willowbrook sophomore Brett Vandergrift (above left) earned individual medalist honors with his nine-hole score of 39 on the par-36 layout. Junior Dominic Faillo shot a 40 for the Warriors, while seniors John Donovan and Nick Cipriano (above middle) both contributed scores of 42. The Warriors faced

York and Downers Grove South in Saturday’s three-team meet at Willow Crest Golf Club in Oak Brook. York won the team competition with its score of 321. Downers Grove South posted a 327, while Willowbrook finished with a team total of 359.

17 deaths related to the coronavirus reported in DuPage County during August STAFF REPORT

The DuPage County Health Department’s daily update on Sept. 7 reported 15,339 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in county residents, including 539 deaths.

The update from eight days earlier—Aug. 30—reported 533 deaths related to COVID-19 in DuPage County.

As of Sept. 7, the county health department reported 447 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Villa Park residents, including six deaths.

According to the DuPage County Health Department, the first COVID-19 related death in DuPage County took place on March 19.

There were 14 deaths related to the coronavirus in DuPage County during March. There were 195 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in April, and another 195 deaths related to COVID-19 in May. There were 83 DuPage County deaths related to the coronavirus in June, and 34 COVID-19 related deaths in the county during July. As of Sept. 7, the health department re-

ported 17 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County during August. Through the first seven days of September, the health department reported one COVID-19 related death in the county to account for the total of 539 deaths related to the coronavirus.

The health department notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change.

As of Sept. 4, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported that nearly 80 percent (426) of the COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County involved residents of longterm care facilities.

The IDPH’s daily update from Sept. 7 reported there have been 8,179 deaths related to COVID-19 in Illinois. As of Sept. 4, more than half of those deaths—4,445—involved residents of long-term care facilities.

The IDPH’s daily update from Sept. 7 also related there have been over 250,000 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Illinois, with more than 4.4 million tests for the virus performed in the state.
