On Thursday, July 22, at approximately 10:48 p.m., officers with the Wheaton Police Department responded to a call of shots fired on the 1300 block of N. Main Street.

Upon their arrival, officers observed four vehicles parked in the area with apparent gunshot damage including broken windows, bullet holes in the body of vehicles and bullet holes through one vehicle’s rear license

plate.

An investigation into the matter alleges that earlier that day, an individual (A) known to the defendant had a physical altercation with another individual (B). It is alleged that the second individual (B) and others went to Holland’s street, where one member of the group allegedly broke the window of a parked car with a baseball bat.

House Bill 2621 aims to create incentives for building and maintaining affordable housing projects through investment of federal funds and tax credits. Pritzker signed the bill at the Hope Manor II affordable apartment complex in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago.

Nancy Hughes Moyer, the CEO and president of Volunteers of America Illinois which developed and owns Hope Manor II, said the facility is an example of “affordable supportive housing at its best.”

The campus-style facility is specifically designed for head-of-household veterans and their families.

The Englewood community has seen its population decline from just less than 100,000 in the 1960s and 1970s to less than 30,000 today. The Hope Manor development and the area around it aims to bring people back to the community with “high quality affordable housing,” Moyer said.

The Villa Park Police Department is investigating a late-night shooting that took place last week near the village’s Metra station.

According to the police department, the shooting occurred at about 11:39 p.m. on Monday, July 26, in the area of Ardmore Avenue and Terrace Street.

was shot multiple times during the incident. The victim was transported to an area hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.

“We are pursuing several different leads,” said Rivas, who noted that DuPage County’s Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigation Team (MERIT) was assisting Villa Park Police in investigating the incident.

Rivas asked that anyone with any

information about the shooting call the Villa Park Police Department at 630-834-7447.

A news release issued by the police department stated that a male black suspect wearing all black clothing was seen running westbound from the scene of the shooting. The news release added that the preliminary investigation indicated the victim was likely targeted during the incident, and that it did not appear the general

public was at further risk.

In a separate incident, Villa Park Police responded to the scene of a death investigation on Saturday morning. According to the police department, officers were on the scene of a death investigation at a residence in the area of West Vermont Street and North Third Avenue. Rivas said Sunday that the death was still under investigation, and that he had no updates.

To ensure students experiencing homelessness are aware of available resources, state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) has created a housing insecurity liaison position at all higher education institutions in Illinois.

“Students without permanent housing may not be aware of the resources available to them on campus and in their communities,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By creating a housing insecurity liaison, we are working to

prevent homeless students from falling through the cracks by connecting them with aid.”

Glowiak Hilton’s law requires each institution to appoint a Housing and Opportunities Useful for Students’ Excellence (HOUSE) liaison.

Their responsibilities would include identifying appropriate services, understanding aid eligibility, tracking graduation and retention rates, reporting the number of students using homelessness resources, and

developing a plan to provide access to on-campus housing between academic breaks to homeless students enrolled at the institution.

Under the law, higher education institutions would also be required to provide information about available services and assistance regarding homelessness in financial aid and admission packets, as well as on the institution’s website.

“Stable housing is foundational to academic and social success,”

Glowiak Hilton said. “Creating this position is one step toward combating homelessness for students and ensuring they have access to better opportunities.”

Signed by the governor Friday, July 9, Senate Bill 190 is effective Aug. 1, 2022, and will begin with the 2022-23 academic year.

West Suburban Bank, Old Second Bank announce merger

Aurora-based Old Second National Bank and Lombard-based West Suburban Bank jointly announced last week the signing of a definitive merger agreement for Old Second to acquire West Suburban Bank in a cash and stock transaction valued at $297 million, according to a news release posted on Old Second Bank’s website.

The terms of the merger agreement were approved unanimously by the board of directors of both banks.

The merger is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The name of the combined new bank likely will be Old Second National Bank, according to the Daily Herald.

It is expected to fund the development and preservation of up to 3,500 affordable rental homes and apartments by the end of 2024, according to the governor’s office.

The new law directs the Illinois Housing Development Authority to launch a COVID-19 Affordable Housing Program and directs $75 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars to support the construction and rehabilitation of affordable rental housing in areas most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funds will be directed to projects in “disproportionately impacted areas” based on metrics such as unemployment rate, students on free lunch programs and poverty rates.

The measure also extends through 2026 an affordable housing tax credit that would have expired by the end of

the year. That credit is for 50 percent of the value of a qualified donation to affordable housing developments.

Donations for the program that began in 2001 have included land, buildings and funding.

Karen Davis, assistant director of the state’s Illinois Housing Development Association, said “Illinois was already facing a shortage of safe, affordable housing for extremely low-income households” prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said the state would have to add 250,000 affordable housing units to meet the current demand for such facilities. She said the extension of the tax credit is important, as it has created or supported 21,000 affordable housing units since its creation in 2001.

Another provision in the bill directs chief county assessment officers to create special assessment programs to reduce the assessable property value for newly built and rehabilitated affordable housing de-

eligibility to households earning up to 60 percent of the median income level.

The formula for the fee on utility bills funding the LIHEAP program will change beginning in January 2022. Masks will be required at driver’s license facilities in Illinois starting Monday, Secretary of State Jesse White announced July 27, and Gov. JB Pritzker said he is “looking at all the possible mitigations” amid another surge of COVID-19 infections.

The secretary of state’s announcement came one day after the Illinois Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated guidance to recommend individuals in areas with “substantial risk” or greater for the spread of COVID-19 should wear face coverings regardless of vaccination status.

“Substantial” risk occurs when new cases are between 50 to 99 per 100,000 people over a 7-day period, while “high” risk occurs when cases exceed that amount. A CDC county map shows much of the state’s western half along the Missouri border is at high or substantial risk, as is most of southern Illinois.

The CDC also recommended masks be worn by all individuals in K-12 schools, and IDPH announced it “fully aligns” with the federal guidance. The governor warned Monday that districts disobeying guidance could face civil liability.

White’s new mask requirement will also apply to the Illinois State Capitol and all secretary of state offices. The announcement came as the state reported 2,082 new COVID-19 cases, the most since May 7, and the case positivity rate rose to 4 percent, the highest since April 19.

The guidance that all people in school buildings should wear face coverings comes just 18 days after the CDC released guidance saying masks were suggested only for those who had not been vaccinated.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky of the CDC said in a briefing last week the main reason for the change in guidance is the fact that the COVID-19 delta variant—which makes up “eight in 10” of the COVID-19 cases that have had been sequenced in labora-

tories—is less predictable and more transmissible than previous versions of the virus. It’s also due to the fact that fewer people than expected have chosen to become vaccinated nationwide.

“When we released our school guidance on July 9, we had less delta variant in this country, we had fewer cases in this country, and importantly, we were really hopeful that we would have more people vaccinated, especially in the demographic between 12 to 17 years old,” Walensky said according to an audio recording posted to the CDC website.

She said the guidance is aimed at protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as children 11 years of age and younger and those who are immunocompromised.

While Pritzker said the state has “wanted school districts to make decisions for themselves throughout the last year to keep their districts safe,” school districts face the risk of

I don’t want to sound harsh, but if you don’t want to get the shot then it is your choice to take the extreme risk of getting extremely sick, and possibly dying from a proven human-killing virus. Why punish those who know and do the right thing?

*** I had not heard about Beverly Miles until recently. She announced her candidacy for governor and intends to run in the Democratic primary next year against JB Pritzker.

She’s a nurse and U.S. Army veteran from Chicago. And she’s African-American. She had COVID-19 and was hospitalized, but she’s critical of how Pritzker handled the pandemic, including shutting down businesses. One thing she said that resonated with me is this quote: “I think he should be shut down and not make any money and allow other people to continue their businesses.”

I hope this patriotic woman of color gets on the ballot and gets a chance to debate governor billionaire. I bet Pritzker would find some excuse to get out of debating her. *** Keep an eye on how school board members in our local districts vote in the days and weeks leading up to the start of the new school year regarding wearing masks. Will they vote to force kids to wear masks all day in class, or not? If they do, vote for their opponent the next time they’re up for reelection.

*** I am all for helping people when they lose their job. Our state has been more than generous with money (that we don’t have) and handouts to thousands of families. But, this has to stop. Businesses are hiring everywhere, so anyone who wants to work can! Many jobs are now paying $20 an hour. If we keep giving people money, why would they even look for a job? *** Hey folks. Many share blame for inner-city crises; small thinking won’t fix the problem

By Jim Nowlan Not long after college, in the late 1960s, I was visiting friends on the gentrifying near northwest side of Chicago. My host couple and I took a stroll, before a night on Old Town nearby.

As we came upon the Armitage Avenue Methodist Church, we saw maybe a dozen young men lounging on the broad concrete steps that led to the imposing church doors.

“That’s Bobby Rush,” whispered friend Gordon, nodding to an obvious leader of a lively discussion ongoing at the foot of the Lord’s house.

Seeing us, the gang leaders (even a downstater like me could tell that’s who these dudes were) beckoned us up. They put quart beer bottles in our hands, and we bantered about nothing for a few minutes; then departed with a wave, beers in hand. The Black Panther and Young Lords leaders had more important things to talk about during their powwow.

My takeaway: Back then there were just a few big gangs in Chicago, So, as bad as the gangs were, there was identifiable leadership. And power can talk to power, when absolutely necessary. Just as city leaders did from time to time, through back channels, with an earlier gang leader, Al Capone, when necessary to see that an election came off without any mayhem.

Today in Chicago, there are about 60 gangs, according to the Chicago Crime Commission, and many more semiautonomous offshoots, some on but single blocks, and 100,000 plus members. Gang members outnumber the Chicago police 9-to-1. How do you like them odds?! No wonder so many cops long to depart the city for safer jobs in nearby suburbs.

Nor is there anyone for the cops and city leaders to talk to. Power is atomized, and Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods must often seem like free-fire zones among teens.

Fast forward from Bobby Rush, now a 15-term veteran of Congress, to the early 1980s. My boss, Gov. Jim Thompson, directed me to spend some time in East St. Louis, to see if there were any positive leaders in that benighted city across from its Missouri namesake, whom the governor might support with social and law enforcement programming.

I spent a month in and out of ESL (there was no place in the city of 40,000 to stay). I met Sister Julia Huiskamp, a tough, saintly sort of

the Mother Teresa variety. There are a rare few like her in many of our depleted neighborhoods; not enough to make much of a difference. There was a young man, a college graduate, who had started a printing company.

Locals were pinning some hopes on him. A printer myself, I could tell from the outdated equipment in his shop that the business wouldn’t last a year. It didn’t.

I reported back to Big Jim: There is really no effective leadership you can deal with. The city is too far gone.

Role models like businessmen, the middle class, school teachers and cops, who lived elsewhere, have all abandoned ESL and neighborhoods like it.

Fast, fast forward to a couple of years ago. I return to ESL to be on a panel discussion, sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council, a fine, do-good group. We meet in a government building, the only kind still standing. On my purposeful, slow drive through the city of 25,000 (82,000 in 1950), I see little business activity other than liquor stores and storefront churches, a neon cross faintly blinking above one of them.

Whole neighborhoods are vacant, trash strewn, houses falling down— apocalyptic.

Once vibrant neighborhoods on the South and West sides of Chicago mirror ESL. You can see this, by taking the Number 20 CTA bus west on Madison from Michigan Avenue out to Austin Boulevard, on the border with Oak Park. (I’ll bet you don’t.)

The bus takes you from glitter to litter.

The homicide rates in ESL and downstate cities like Peoria are even higher than in Chicago, yet they don’t have the Magnificent Mile of Michigan Avenue and tourism to protect. No, it’s Chicago that national newscasters imply is on the bubble, between vitality and fateful disarray.

Liberals, conservatives, the middle class—we’re all at fault. For example, when I was a college student in the 1960s, Aid to Families with Dependent Children was barred to households in which there was a man present! Further, we ploughed new expressways expressly to keep blacks separate from whites. And we built high-rise hellholes to house lots of poor folks behind those expressway walls. We put “Willis wagon” trailer classrooms (named for a city school superintendent) on segregated school grounds, to keep blacks away from our kids.

There is a lot of blame to go around.

What to do? Get 20,000 to 30,000 at-risk teens out of their

neighborhoods. After all, that’s what everyone else who can has done.

Maybe to programs like the Lincoln ChalleNGe residential school “boot camp,” located downstate, started by former Gov. Jim Edgar (the camps are for the National Guard, which runs the program). And maybe to CCCtype camps in the wilderness, the types that lifted thousands of young whites out of their poverty plight during the Depression—and which mostly barred blacks.

We also have to repair, somehow, the crumpled subcultures of our depleted neighborhoods (including as well those for young white single mothers in my rural Illinois).

Too many of these young mothers in urban and rural America have neither parenting skills nor positive

support networks, and find drugs and alcohol a comfort in a world which overwhelms them.

Small ball won’t make a difference. President Biden thinks big, but he apparently wants simply to throw money at people, and not use it to hold them accountable for striving to better themselves.

As for Chicago, I think Mayor Lori Lightfoot should take a page from the playbook of another female Chicago mayor. In 1981, Jane Byrne moved into the infamous Cabrini Green public housing project on the Near North Side of Chicago. Sure, it was a gimmick, but it focused awesome public attention. And Cabrini Green is now gone, though probably more so because developers wanted to put upscale condos in its place.

Cullerton calls on Congress to repay National Guard for safety mission in D.C. As chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is calling on the U.S. Congress to repay debt owed to the National Guard for their service providing security to the U.S. Capitol in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots.

“The riots at our nations’ capital were a scary time for many,” Cullerton said. “Hundreds of men and women from Illinois were sent with the National Guard to assist in the aftermath of those riots, putting their safety on the line to protect the Capitol. It is only fair for them to be fully

compensated for their duties.”

With expenses from the D.C. mission still outstanding, the National Guard is facing devastating prospects if this funding is not immediately repaid, including a reduction in exercises, weekend training, and potential furloughs, placing a significant financial burden on individual members of the guard, putting their monthly drill checks and insurance payments in jeopardy.

“These soldiers put their lives on hold including jobs, schooling, and time with their families to support the needs of our country,” Culler-

ton said. “I urge Congress to act as quickly as possible to address this debt and prevent any further burdens on our Illinois National Guard.”

More than 25,000 Guard troops answered the call in January to protect the Capitol following the Jan. 6 riots. Thousands remained in Washington, D.C. until the end of May to provide support to local law enforcement and ensure the safety of the nation’s capital city.

Mole or melanoma – how to tell the difference Summer is the perfect time to check for signs of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

If you notice a suspicious bump, blemish, dark unsightly mole or one of the signs below, contact your doctor about your concerns.

These are some signs of melanoma: • A sore that doesn’t heal; • Spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin; • Redness or a new swelling beyond the border of a mole; • Change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness or pain; • Change in the surface of a mole – scariness, oozing, bleeding or the appearance of a bump.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a regular mole and melanoma. One of the first signs of melanoma is a change in the shape, color, size or feel of an existing mole. Use the ABCDE rule to remember what to look for: A – Asymmetry: If a line is drawn through the middle and the two sides match, it is symmetrical. If a line is drawn through a mole and the two halves do not match, meaning it is asymmetrical, that is a warning sign for melanoma.

B – Border: The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.

C – Color: Having a variety of colors on a mole is another warning sign of melanoma. Several different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, white or blue.

D – Diameter: Melanomas are usually larger in diameter than the eraser on a pencil tip, but they may be smaller when first detected.

E – Evolving: When a mole is evolving or

changing, see a doctor. Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — could be a sign of cancer.

Melanomas can develop anywhere on the skin, but they are more likely to start on the trunk (chest and back) in men and on the legs in women. The neck and face are other common sites, but melanoma can also develop on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and under the nails.

The following factors may raise the risk of developing melanoma: • Sun exposure and indoor tanning • Having many moles, being fair skinned and having a family history of melanoma • Previous skin cancer or another inherited condition • Race or ethnicity. Melanoma rates are 24 times higher in Caucasians than in African Americans, however anyone can develop it.

• Age. The median age at which people are diagnosed with melanoma is just about 50 years, but it can also occur in young adults.

• Having a weakened or suppressed immune system.

Wearing sunscreen, even during the winter months and on cloudy days, can help protect against melanoma, as well as: • Staying in the shade and wearing protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses • Avoiding peak rays when the sun is the most intense • Avoiding tanning beds • Applying sunscreen regularly, especially when outside Learn more at www.eehealth.org/services/ cancer.

Education services extended for special needs students Pritzker also signs bill addressing early childhood education workforce

Students with special needs will be able to finish their last year of high school regardless of when their birthday falls on the calendar, while those who lost a year or more of in-person schooling due to the pandemic and have since aged out of special education eligibility will be given another year to complete their schooling.

Those changes are the result of two bills Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law July 28 while also announcing a $200 million investment of federal funds to expand the state’s early childhood education workforce.

“Here in Illinois, our current special education law aligns with federal requirements,” Pritzker said at one bill signing ceremony in Chicago. “But if you believe a student has the right to stay in the classroom and not be yanked out on an arbitrary day that happens to be their birthday, our current laws just haven’t been good enough.”

Under federal law, students with special needs who have an individualized educational program, or IEP, are entitled to receive special education services through age 21.

For many, that means their access to education services ends on the day before their 22nd birthday, regardless of where that date falls on the school calendar.

“They’ve been forced to leave their school, a place of growth, a place of comfort,” said Joshua Long, principal at Southside Occupational Academy High School in Chicago, a transition school for special needs students aged 16 to 22. “And they’ve had to leave on some arbitrary day before their 22nd birthday, and then transition to their home, where they wait for up to 10 years for services as an adult with disabilities.”

House Bill 40, by Chicago Democrats Rep. Fran Hurley and Sen. Bill Cunningham, changes that law in Illinois so that when those students turn 22, they can complete the school year and graduate at the same time as their other classmates. The new law takes effect immediately.

“This bill has a huge impact on our young adults and all families as it will facilitate a smooth transition as they exit the school system,” said Anita Barraza, the parent of a special needs student. “Allowing them to stay will extend their ability to continue developing valuable life skills.”

Pritzker also signed House Bill 2748, which allows special education students who turned 22 while in-person instruction was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic to remain eligible for services through the end of the 2021-2022 school year.

“The intent of this bill is really to regain some of that learning that was lost because of circumstances created by the pandemic,” said Rep. Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, the lead sponsor of the bill in the House. “Zoom classes were particularly difficult for this cohort of students and their families, and they were left with less options as a result. So this bill will extend that and give more opportunities to students to regain some of that learning loss, just like is going to happen for every other student in general education.”

Later, Pritzker signed another education-related bill while also announcing that the state would invest $200 million of federal funds to provide additional training, men-

torships and scholarships to bolster the state’s early childhood education workforce over the next two years.

Of that money, about $120 million will go toward financial support, including scholarships, to encourage child care workers to pursue advanced credentials, according to the governor’s office.

Part of the money will also provide coaches, mentors and navigators with resources to help child care workers pursue their degrees.

“We are improving the lives of children across our state by giving them a new level of quality care by upskilling our early childhood workforce,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We are providing educational opportunity for 5,600 people

to earn degrees that will advance their careers. And we are advancing our pandemic economic recovery.

All of these investments will pay dividends for years to come.”

House Bill 2878, by Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, and Sen. Cristina Pacione-Zayas, D-Chicago, also seeks to bolster the state’s early childhood education workforce by establishing a consortium among higher education institutions to develop ways that make it easier for child care workers to complete degree programs.

Under the bill, people who earn credentials as an early childhood educator as part of an associate’s degree program from a community college will automatically become eligible to transfer as a junior to a bachelor’s degree program at a public university.

“Ultimately, upskilling the incumbent early childhood workforce fosters racial, gender, geographic, and economic equity while enabling families to work, go to school and provide a safe and high-quality environment for children to learn and grow,” Pacione-Zayas said in a statement. “They are the workforce behind the workforce who held us together during the pandemic. This new law will dismantle barriers and streamline pathways for diverse early childhood professionals to meet educational goals and foster economic stability.”

Laughing at the perks of widowhood

“There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.”

— Erma Bombeck I find it appropriately appropriate that the introductory quote for this column comes from the person who inspired my writing. Erma was funny, but she was wise as well.

In the vein of the opening quote, I give you perspectives on widowhood. I’ve lamented and bemoaned my circumstance, not understanding why such a thing could possibly happen to me.

But it did. And lamenting and bemoaning, however appropriate, are just not all that fun. And life is meant to be fun; it is meant to be filled with joy and laughter, in the best of times, but even and maybe more importantly, in the worst of times.

With that thought in mind, I’ve put together a short list of the many perks of widowhood. They come in the wake of lamenting.

They come in the wake of living out something beyond your reality.

They come despite it all.

Perks I’ve noticed about widowhood: • You can double dip into the salsa or sour cream and no one cares.

• You not only get to pick the TV show, you also get to hold the remote (and control the volume!)

• No one steals your covers or hogs all the pillows.

• No more wasted time being intimate with the person you love.

That leaves you free to pursue other hobbies, like lying awake and staring at the ceiling.

• Less laundry. Less clothes in the closet. More hanger space for you!

• You never have to worry about what you’re going to do on Friday night. Netflix rocks! So does drinking alone.

• Simplicity in the kitchen: You get to cook dinner for one — every night.

• No bickering about whose turn it is to take out the garbage or mow the grass or unload the dishwasher. It’s always your turn!

• No more fighting for alonetime.

• No need to expend the time,

energy or money on one of those sappy, romantic anniversary cards.

• If someone forgets to flush the toilet, you know who to blame.

• So many (many, many) invitations to social events. (Not.) But that’s OK because antisocial is the new black.

• No one to ask you how your day went. (Who wants to rehash that crap?)

• You only have to make half the bed.

• Disconnecting their cell phone — think of the monthly savings!

(Not to mention the time you save not having to text them multiple times a day.)

• No more private jokes. Those personal moments are so overrated anyway.

• A streamlined schedule. No need for kisses goodbye, kisses hello or bedtime kisses.

• You get to figure out how to do all the things he or she used to do, like pay the bills, fix a faucet and cook. Remember, learning is growing!

• When you go out to eat, no one will say, “Want to split dessert?”

You get to eat the whole thing yourself.

And so on … The perks are never-ending, just like grief.

It feels weird to laugh when you are supposed to be sad, when society almost requires you to be sad (but doesn’t want you to cry in public — too uncomfortable!)

But in the wake of grief, laughter feels good, even if it feels a little out of place or weird. It shouldn’t.

Laughter is natural. It is healing. It is a universal human behavior, and that speaks volumes.

Erma was right. Laughter and pain are separated by a thin line. I, for one, choose to cross it.

being held liable in civil courts “if they don’t live up to the standard that is set by the CDC.” The Illinois State Board of Education echoed those comments in a statement.

“Illinois fully adopted the CDC’s updated guidance for K-12 schools on July 27, which recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status,” an ISBE spokesperson said in an email. “School boards that choose not to implement public health guidance are putting their students and staff at risk and should consult with their insurers as to potential liability.”

Other than that, ISBE’s most recent guidance, encouraging school boards to work with local health departments on mitigations, remains in place.

Walensky also said a major concern as the virus continues to spread and mutate is that it eventually evolves into a “very transmissible virus that has the potential to evade our vaccine in terms of how it protects us from severe disease and death.”

While “we’re not there yet,” she said, that mutation could be as few as “two mutations away” from the current circulating variants.

As of now, 99 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Illinois are occurring in unvaccinated individuals, Pritzker has said.

As of July 27, there were 857 people hospitalized for COVID-19 across the state, a high since June 4 and a 50 percent increase from exactly one week ago.

Intensive care bed usage by COVID-19 patients is up 56 percent from a week ago, with 184 beds in

use by COVID-19 patients, including 74 on ventilators.

Another six deaths were attributed to the virus July 27, bringing the confirmed death toll in Illinois

to 23,420, with 2,473 probable COVID-19 deaths as well since the pandemic began.

We played a lot of games and still had our camp. You gain an appreciation when something is taken away from you and we were appreciative this summer.”

John Hilgart and Antonio Richardson are back for IC Catholic Prep.

“John was with us as a sophomore and was all-conference last year,” Tyrrell said. “He’s extremely efficient and will be key to what we do this year. It’s very encouraging to see his progress.

He is a great young man. Antonio is a hard worker and is also a good football player. We’re excited he’s back.”

Also back for the Knights is Augie

Wassmann. “He saw the floor quite a bit,” Tyrrell said. “Augie spent a lot of time on his game during the COVID time and has gotten better.”

Senior Liam Johnson also returns.

“Liam has a good outside shot and is a great diversion on the floor,” Tyrrell said. “He does a lot of the little things that you love to see as a coach. We have some guys back who have been through the program a little bit. We graduated some good leaders from last year’s team. It’s good that these guys saw that. We have guys now who are ready to step up.” Tyrrell also is excited about the likes of Kal Kilgast, Jake Gallagher, Aidan Johnson, George O’Brien and Dean O’Brien.

The Knights will again play York and Timothy Christian. “It’s nice to have York on the schedule again and be able to play Timothy as well,” Tyrrell said. “We added some new looks on the schedule this year with Naperville North and Lake Park. We’re happy to be back playing. The kids need this.

They need the interaction with their peers, to build something bigger than themselves and have a common purpose. We communicated that, but we also had a lot of laughs this summer.

You can tell when guys are really clicking. Our guys came together this summer and things started clicking. They have responded very well. We have a lot of optimism going into the upcoming season. They care about each other and if you have that, you have the makings of a special season.”
