The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department is offering group dog obedience classes this fall. Rudy O’Donnell, a certified dog trainer and Villa Park resident, will teach the seven-week program, which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The evening classes will take place at the Community Recreation Building, 320 E. Wildwood Ave. There will be two evening classes each Wednesday—a puppy/beginner class and an intermediate class for dogs who have gone through a basic program. Jerry R. Fanelle, Jr., 91 Jerry R. Fanelle, Jr., of Addison and former 55-year resident of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 91.

He was a veteran of the U.S. military who served during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of VFW #2801 of Villa Park.

Mr. Fanelle was founder and former owner of Plumbing By Terrace Contracting Company for 28 years. Son of the late Jerry R. Fanelle, Sr. and the late Nettie (nee Miraglio) Fanelle. Beloved husband of the late Rosemary (nee Ebeling) Fanelle for 46 years. Loving father of Donna Fanelle. Dear brother of the late Marie Norris, the late Lydia Palmere, the late Bill Fanelle, and the late Ronald Fanelle. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. The U.S. Census is in its final six weeks, and the DuPage Complete Count Committee is urging residents to complete their Census forms.

DuPage County’s self-response rate is currently at 78.8 percent, which ranks third in the nation among counties with a population greater than 500,000. But officials hope to increase the response rate.

“We cannot underestimate the value of increasing our U.S. Census response rates,” said Sadia Covert, Chairwoman of the DuPage Complete Count Committee. “DuPage County’s level of federal funding is highly dependent upon on our population. The only way to obtain the level of federal funding we are owed

is if everyone fills out their Census information. This money will be used to fund states and counties, but also for schools, hospitals, roads, and other vital programs. There is so much at stake with this Census.”

Beginning this month, the U.S. Census Bureau is following up in-person with households nationwide that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. Based on the current nationwide self-response rate, the Bureau estimates it will need to visit about 56 million addresses to collect responses in person.

In most cases, Census workers will make up to six attempts at each housing unit address to count possible residents. This includes leaving noti-

fication of the attempted visit on the door. The notification will include reminder information on how to respond online, by mail, or by phone.

In addition, census workers may try to reach the household by phone to conduct the interview.

After exhausting their efforts to do an in-person interview with a resident of an occupied housing unit, they will seek out proxy sources – a neighbor, a rental agent, a building manager or some other knowledgeable person familiar with who resides in the housing unit – to obtain as much basic information about the occupants as possible.

Census takers are hired from local communities. All census takers speak

English, and many are bilingual. If a Census taker does not speak the household language, the household may request a return visit from a census taker who does.

“It has never been easier to submit your information for the Census. You can do it online, over the phone, or by mail, all without having to meet face-to-face with someone during a pandemic,” said DuPage Complete Count Committee Vice Chairman Jim Healy. “Your information is safe, secure, and confidential, and by law, cannot be shared with any law enforcement or immigration agencies.”

Paul Kluge, 78 Paul Kluge, of Villa Park, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020, at the age of 78. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Patricia “Patt” Kluge. They lived in Villa Park for more than 50 years where they raised their six children, Deidre (Jim) Herriman, Paul (Susan) Kluge, Matthew (Lisa) Kluge, the late Jonathan Kluge, Clayton (Dana) Kluge, Sandy (Keith) Kraynak. He was also the cherished grandfather of Luke, Todd, Jace, Sydney, Kennedy, Emily, Ashley, Ethan, Elena, Sophia and Gia; great grandfather of Reese, Serenity, Ivy and Graham; as well as the much-loved brother of Sandy, Lucky, Bill and Dick. Paul’s chosen profession was as a truck driver, but he is remembered more for the legacy he leaves behind and the happy memories he created with a house (and backyard) constantly full of family and friends.

Love and loyalty of family was something he valued strongly and often talked about. He will be sorely missed!

The district is beginning the year with full remote learning for all students. According to the District 45 website (www.d45.org), full remote learning provides both synchronous (learning that occurs when there is a scheduled time for the teacher and students to meet virtually and instruction is delivered in real time) and asynchronous (learning that oc-

curs when students are working independently at their own pace and time) instruction.

The full remote learning frameworks for early childhood, elementary schools and middle schools are explained in more detail on the website.

The district says it is constantly monitoring the situation with regard

to remote learning and phasing in in-person learning. It will discuss the next steps at its Monday, Sept. 21 Board of Education meeting.

The district noted that its primary goal is to return to in-person instruction when conditions allow, but it is unable at this time to provide a specific date as to when that will take place.

Montini Catholic begins school year with hybrid model School hopes to return to full attendance later in fall

After a long summer of planning, Montini Catholic High School has welcomed students back into the building for their first day of the 2020-21 school year.

Classes began on Aug. 17.

The Lasallian college preparatory school is beginning its school year in “hybrid” mode with the hope of returning to full attendance later this fall. In an effort to maintain class sizes and corridor traffic to allow for social distancing, the plan will have half the students in the building on alternating days. Each student has been assigned to a “Maroon or Gold cohort group,” and will be on campus every other day, learning virtually when not in the building.

The “Maroon and Gold rotation” has been plotted out on the calendar for the first four weeks of the school year, allowing students the ability to see those dates on the school’s online school calendar.

The school’s reopening plan recently was certified by the Diocese of Joliet. Principal Kevin Beirne assured parents and faculty that the hybrid model will allow the school to space students out in the classroom in such a way that they can minimize the number of students and teachers considered to be in close contact with any one student.

Four planning committees were created by the administration to hone in on the different aspects of opening safely and efficiently: Academic Program, School Building, Communications and Community Health and Safety. The final plan represents their collective decisions on how best to begin the 2020-21 school year.

“Changes to this plan will be necessitated as circumstances and guidance shift,” said Beirne. “Our smaller school size gives us an edge over larger schools in that we are able to better handle the state’s guidelines.

Ultimately, based on a comprehensive planning process, we feel we’ve devised a plan that will allow us to maximize student learning and engagement in the safest way possible.”

Beirne said he couldn’t be prouder of the work his colleagues have put in to craft a plan for the re-opening.

“As an independent Catholic school, we really do have the abili-

ty to make decisions as close to the students as possible,” he said. “With more than 25 of our educators involved in the process, the plan truly is a reflection of the collective wisdom of the entire group. That said, it wasn’t an easy process. In total, our four planning groups met more than 57 times for more than 85 hours.”

Hindus want all public schools in Oak Brook to stay closed on Diwali—the most popular of their festivals; starting in 2021.

Thus, they are urging Christopher Edmonds and Dr. Paul O’Malley, board president and superintendent, respectively, of Butler School District (BSD) 53 in Oak Brook (which includes Oakbrook Terrace), to adopt Diwali as an official holiday on its 2021-2022 school year calendars and beyond.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a recent statement, pointed out that it would be a step in the positive direction in view of presence of a substantial number of Hindu students in Oak Brook; as it was important to meet the religious and spiritual needs of these pupils. Some school districts in various U.S. states have reportedly already declared Diwali as a holiday.

Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that schools should make efforts to accommodate the religious requirements of Hindu students and show respect to their faith by not conducting regular business and scheduling classes on Diwali. It does not want students to be put at an unnecessary disadvantage for missing tests/examinations/papers, assignments, class

work, etc.; by taking a day-off to observe Diwali.

Zed suggested BSD to seriously look into declaring Diwali as an official holiday, thus recognizing the intersection of spirituality and education. Zed noted that awareness about other religions thus created by such holidays like Diwali would make Oak Brook students well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens.

Zed further states that Hinduism is rich in festivals and religious festivals that are very dear and sacred to Hindus. Diwali, the festival of lights, aims at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. In 2021, Diwali falls on Thursday, Nov. 4.

Hinduism is oldest and third largest world religion world with about 1.1 billion adherents. There are about three million Hindus in the United States.

Awards-winning BSD, whose history goes back to early 1900s, claims to be “known for its high achievement and top test scores.”

“Our students consistently rank among the highest in the state on tests and earn top ranking on academic teams,” it adds.

Volunteers help to distribute over 385,000 free meals

District 88 staff members joined other volunteers to distribute 385,952 free meals to community members from March 17 to Aug. 18. During that five-month period, District 88 teamed with District 45, Salt Creek District 48, Addison School District 4, Arbor Management, Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to offer free meals to all residents up to the age of 18. The meals were distributed at various locations in Villa Park and Addison. Hundreds of volunteers contributed to the effort to distribute the meals. Reading Speak Out every week has been enlightening. Here are three things I’ve learned that prove themselves true with each new issue: 1) There are a lot of racists in this area. 2) Racists take issue with being called what they are and swear they’re not. 3) In defending themselves, said racists begin to explain and justify their beliefs and in doing so, further cement the fact that they’re definitely racist. *** I cannot see how anyone can take the Democrat Party seriously even if your distaste for Trump knows no bounds. The party of diversity and change has nominated an old white man who will most likely not make it through four years. *** I heard Navy Pier is closing after Labor Day for the rest of the year, and that will mean more than 70 restaurants and other businesses there will close. Navy Pier had nine million visitors last year. Now, business is 15 percent of what it was last year. It’s sad, but I have to keep reminding myself that we’re all in this together with this virus. Ordinary people continue to lose their jobs, their businesses and their homes, while the politicians and medical ex-

There are something like 12,000 members of the Chicago Police Department. How many looters were there recently—a few hundred? How is it that a few hundred looters can loot and destroy multiple businesses? Think of all of the damage they caused and the value of the merchandise they stole. Additionally, how many businesses won’t open up? How many people will decide not to live in, work in or visit Chicago? *** Look at some of the cities where Democrats are in charge: Chicago, New York City, Portland, Minneapolis, Washington, D.C. What do those Democrat-run cities have in common? Lawlessness and seemingly little or no consequences for criminals. If you want your own city to fall apart, vote Democrat. *** There are about 2.8 million deaths per year in the United States. Look

In recent years, about 110,000 people die in Illinois per year. There are about 6,400 annual deaths in DuPage County—that’s more than 530 per month. Until now, have there ever been stories about the total number of deaths in the country? Hardly.

But now, with COVID-19, we hear reports of deaths as if deaths are something new. It seems like some people are counting on the public to be ignorant. *** I can’t wait for the day when COVID-19 is not the lead story on every news media and print outlet.

I think the media is creating hysteria and creating more problems than there are. Today the lead story was “five additional virus deaths in Illinois.” Were they all in Cook County?

Then lead with “101 counties in Illinois reported no deaths today from the virus.” Apparently negative sells.

If this virus was last year or next year it would be over and done. But because it is an election year, both sides are playing games with stats, re-openings, schools and the economy, etc. As bad as this is for the

economy and our tax base, not one government employee has been laid off or missed a paycheck, amazing.

This will catch up with all of us taxpayers real soon. *** Well, now the Democratic National Convention is over and the Republican one is around the corner. Wish I knew what the Democrats stood for. All the talk was how much they didn’t like Trump. Remember when Obama was in office and all you heard was, “Well, he’s the president and deserves your respect?” Didn’t hear much about what they planned to do. Are they hiding something? Is socialism and higher taxes on their mind? *** All I want to say is, you people vote for Biden, I hope you pay the price. Bye. *** I don’t know if this is because I’m a Gen Z, but a Russian-installed president is much more concerning than a Chinese-owned app. *** This is Villa Park. For the past three years we have survived the most ruthless, reckless, criminally dishonest president in American

While expectation is for all students to participate in the hybrid learning model and full in-person learning (once it is considered safe), Montini has recognized that some students may not be able to attend in-person learning for various reasons including those related to their specific health or the health of others in their home environment.

“While we do not have an online learning program open to all students, we will work on a case by case basis with those families unable to send their students to school to develop a plan that meets their needs,” said Beirne.

Cullerton applauds local businesses receiving state grants To provide support to DuPage County business owners encountering economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) announced 27 small businesses will receive nearly $500,000 through the Business Interruption Grant (BIG) program.

“This program will help our small businesses keep their doors open and employees and customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cullerton said. “I am thrilled to see so many local businesses receive much-needed assistance to stay afloat and continue to support our communities.”

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded a total of $46 million to 2,655 small businesses in the first round of BIG funding.

The BIG program offers grants to Illinois restaurants and bars, barbershops and salons, and fitness centers that have suffered pandemic-related losses, with a focus on businesses in the hardest-hit areas of the state.

First round grants range from $10,000 to $20,000 and may be used to help businesses with working capital expenses, including payroll costs, rent and utilities. The funds may also be used to cover pandemic-related expenses, such as personal protective equipment, training and new technology.

Cullerton has worked tirelessly to cut red tape, increase assistance programs and ease regulations for small businesses across the state.

He pledges to continue to support policies that keep the 23rd State Senate District safe, schools well-funded and property taxes low.

“Our local businesses are the backbone of our state,” he said.

“We must continue to give them the resources to be successful as they work toward reopening and keeping our communities safe.”

The BIG program is the largest state-run economic support program formed in response to the COVID-19 economic downturn.

Almost 100,000 DuPage residents apply to ‘Vote By Mail’ Ballots to be delivered in late September, Kaczmarek says

According to a release issued

by DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek, nearly 100,000 voters have already applied for Vote by Mail ballots in DuPage County for the Nov. 3, 2020 election.

Voters choosing Vote by Mail for the 2020 General Election in DuPage County are encouraged to apply now.

Registered voters were sent Vote by Mail applications three weeks ago.

Applications can be completed and dropped in a mailbox – no postage re-

quired.

Voters may also apply securely online at dupageco.org/Election/VoteByMail/.

Ballots will not begin to be mailed out until Thursday, Sept. 24. It may take four to five business days to receive a ballot after that date. Reader opposes photos of unmasked sports teams The photo on the front page of your current issue of a youth baseball team and its coaches celebrating a victory is irresponsible and dangerous journalism. The boys and coaches in this photo are neither six feet apart nor wearing face coverings, in violation of Governor Pritzker’s current executive order mandating, as law, that all persons not of the same household maintain at least six feet of social distance or, where not possible, wear a face covering which covers the nose and the mouth.

In addition to violating the law, the persons in the photo are endangering both their own health, the health of their families and friends, and of the American public. A deadly pandemic is raging through our country; 1000 Americans are dying every day from COVID-19. Just today, the Director of the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that our country could have the coronavirus pandemic under control in 12 weeks if only most Americans wore masks, embraced social distancing, and engaged in hand hygiene.

The only way you should have such a photo in your newspaper is as an example of the thoughtless behavior that is fueling the pandemic.

And, this is not the first time you have done this. To my recollection, several of your recent issues have had similar photos of youth sports teams violating the Governor’s executive order, and one photo of neighborhood children running a lemonade stand, ignoring face coverings and social distancing.

A newspaper should serve the public good. Become part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Schoolhouse 10th anniversary commemoration Join the Elmhurst History Museum for a Churchville Schoolhouse 10th Anniversary Commemoration on Saturday, Oct. 17.

In 2010, after an extensive restoration, the Elmhurst History Museum reopened the historic Churchville Schoolhouse—one of the last remaining one-room schoolhouses in Illinois that dates to circa 1850 and is listed on the National Register of History Places. Over the past decade, the Schoolhouse has provided a memorable living history experience for hundreds of children and breathed new life into this significant DuPage County landmark.

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary and the community-based effort that helped to preserve this local treasure, join an online pre-recorded video presentation sharing the story of the Churchville Schoolhouse.

County health department reports 529 deaths related to COVID-19

Additions to last week’s total include deaths in May, June and July

The DuPage County Health Department’s daily update on Aug. 23 reported 13,765 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in county residents, including 529 deaths.

The update from one week earlier—Aug. 16— reported 524 deaths in DuPage County related to COVID-19. Of the five additional deaths reported in the period between Aug. 16 and Aug. 23, two deaths reportedly took place in August. The other three deaths took place in May, June and July.

As of Aug. 23, the county health department reported 408 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Villa Park residents, including five deaths.

Through the first 23 days of August, the DuPage County Health Department reported nine COVID-19 related deaths of county residents during the month. The health department notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change.

The county health department provides the actual date of death of residents whose death is related to COVID-19. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) does not provide the actual date of death in its daily reports.

According to the DuPage County Health Department, the first COVID-19 related death in the county took place on March 19. There were a total of 14 COVID-19 related deaths in the county during March. There were 194 additional COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County in April. There were another 195 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in May. The May total stood at 194 in the Aug. 16 report, but one additional death during that month was added in the next week.

According to the county health department’s latest figures, there were 83 deaths in DuPage County related to COVID-19 during June, and 34 county deaths related to the coronavirus during July.

The DuPage County Health Department’s Aug. 23 report indicates that nine COVID-19 related deaths had taken place in the county during August to bring the total to 529.

Of the 529 COVID-19 related deaths in the county as of Aug. 23, 307 involved residents 80 and older. Another 124 of the deaths involved residents in their 70s, while 60 of the deaths involved residents in their 60s. One of the deaths involved a resident in the 20-29 age group. None of the county’s 529 deaths related to COVID-19 have involved a resident under 20 years old.

According to the IDPH, there are about 110,000 deaths per year in Illinois. There were 109,726 total deaths in the state reported in 2017, and 110,012 deaths (an average of over 9,100 per month) reported in 2018. There were 6,305 total deaths reported in DuPage County in 2017. Another 6,444 deaths (an average of 537 per month) were reported in the county in 2018.

Over 50,000 tests each day from Aug. 19-Aug. 23 The IDPH daily reports from the first 23 days of August indicated 19 deaths related to COVID-19 in residents of DuPage County. Again, the IDPH does not provide the actual date of death in its reports. The IDPH, like the DuPage County Health Department, notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change. Lags and discrepancies are to be expected, according to the IDPH. According to the IDPH, about 80 percent (423 of 529) of the COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County involved residents of long-term care facilities.

The IDPH’s daily report on Aug. 23 related there had been 7,880 COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois. As of Aug. 21, there had been 4,319 COVID-19 related deaths in the state’s longterm care facilities. More than half of the state’s COVID-19 related deaths, therefore, have taken place in residents of long-term care facilities.

The IDPH reported more than 220,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Illinois residents as of Aug. 23.

According to the IDPH, 3,509 of the state’s 7,880 COVID-19 related deaths as of Aug. 23 involved residents 80 and older. Another 1,873 deaths involved residents in the 70-79 age group, while 1,412 of the deaths involved residents in their 60s. About 86 percent of the state’s COVID-19 related deaths have involved residents 60 and older.

The IDPH’s Aug. 23 report indicates 31 of the state’s 7,880 COVID-19 related deaths have involved residents in their 20s. There have been five COVID-19 related deaths reported in Illinois residents under the age of 20.

The IDPH reported more than 50,000 tests for the coronavirus in each of its daily reports from Aug. 19 through Aug. 23. According to the IDPH, there have been more than 3.7 million COVID-19 tests performed in Illinois. The state has about 12.7 million residents.

The IDPH does not provide figures on how many people took multiple tests. The IDPH also doesn’t provide information regarding the number of falsepositive tests in the state.

45 percent of state’s COVID deaths involve residents 80 and over According to the IDPH, there have been over 234,000 COVID-19 tests in DuPage County, with nearly 13,800 positive cases. (The county has a total population of about 920,000.) About 2,300 of those cases involved residents of long-term care facilities.

Less than one-half of 1 percent of the COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois have involved residents in their 20s. The 20-29 age group, however, has accounted for more COVID-19 tests (more than 603,000) than any other age group.

There have been more tests performed among residents in their 20s than in residents 70 and older.

About 557,000 tests for COVID-19 have reportedly been conducted on Illinois residents 70 and older.

There have been over 42,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Illinois residents in their 20s.

There have been 23,000 confirmed cases in Illinois residents under the age of 20.

About 45 percent of the state’s COVID-19 deaths have involved residents 80 and older. There have been about 260,000 tests for COVID-19 performed on Illinois residents 80 and older, with about 12,100 confirmed cases in that age group.

There have been about 12,700 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in state residents in their 70s. There have been nearly 300,000 tests for COVID-19 in the state’s residents in the 70-79 age group.

According to the IDPH, there have been nearly as many confirmed COVID-19 cases (about 23,000) in Illinois residents under 20 than there have been in all residents 70 and older (about 24,900).

There have been five COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois residents under the age of 20, while there have been 5,382 COVID-19 related deaths involving residents 70 and older.

This Public Service Announcement is a follow up to that initial report with an in-depth review of all deaths due to overdose in the first six months of 2020, during the onset of Covid 19 shelter at home compared to the same period in 2019.

These overdoses deaths are particularly difficult because they represent the premature end of a life, made worse by the fact that the majority of fatal overdoses occur in the young. They leave family, friends and community with grief and inevitable questions of “what if.”

Report: Five teenage female students accuse Glenbard South male student-athlete of sexual assault According to an exclusive WGNTV report that aired Aug. 7, a male Glenbard South student-athlete has been accused of sexual assault by at least five teenage female students.

The juvenile division of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office is investigating the allegations. The WGNTV report stated that the girls’ parents “want him expelled from the school and at least one administrator fired.”

One of the alleged victims told WGN-TV that in September of 2019, the suspect reportedly “dragged me into the back of his dad’s (Ford F-)150 blue truck, and started making out with me and doing things that I didn’t want happening.”

When asked by the reporter, “Did you tell him no?” the girl replied, “Yes, I said it multiple times.”

According to the report, there are at least five girls who said he allegedly did similar things to them over a period of two years.

Emphasizing that District 87 takes these allegations and students’ safety very seriously, Superintendent Dr. David Larson released a statement that was posted in the WGN-TV report, advising parents and students that “posts and statements on social media do not contain all of the facts or information necessary for the public to draw accurate conclusions. We would like to remind the Glenbard community to read and consume information cautiously.”

Gender: Female = 24% Male = 76% Jorgensen offers perspective In summary, the number of overdose deaths have increased by 52% over the same period in 2019. The majority of this increase was during the “Shelter at Home” COVID-19 period. In Jan/ Feb the number of overdoses were less than 2019, so the large increase was more profound in looking at the next four months. There were 17 OD’s in the Pre-COVID time frame compared to 15 in the same time frame of 2019.

During the COVID quarantine there were 53 deaths (30 during the same time frame of 2019). The age ranges continue to represent a majority of 20and 30-year-olds. However, there were four persons in their 60s. The ethnic background parallels the makeup of DuPage County as cited in the 2010 census report. As in all previous evaluations, males were approximately 76% of those who died.

“Evaluation of each case reveals a common thread,” Dr Jorgensen stated. “Almost every case of overdose revealed that the deceased person had a history of mental health issues, de-

pression, personal, financial or marital problems, previous drug dependence or rehabilitation or were living alone.

It is suggested by these findings that the most vulnerable in our society are being affected negatively by the COVID-19 shutdown and response to isolation and lack of treatment availability. I have reached out to multiple rehabilitation leaders and they confirm the increase in those seeking rehabilitation, drug use relapse and instances of fatal and non-fatal overdoses in their patients and community.”

“We, and every other treatment facility that I know, are filled to maximum capacity with long waiting lists,” said Nick Gore, a vice president at The Indiana Center for Recovery. “The quarantine has been devastating to those in treatment and continuing sobriety.

Shelter at Home limits those in treatment and recovery the ability to meet with treatment professionals, sponsors or the society and companionship that is the bedrock for most treatment programs and continued sobriety.”

Dr. Jorgensen contacted to DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin to seek his perspective on this problem.

“The profound increase in overdose deaths documented by Coroner Jorgensen is a disturbing reminder that illegal narcotics continue to devastate our communities,” Berlin said. “Despite the Covid-19 pandemic we must continue to dedicate resources to combat the opioid epidemic and provide greater opportunities for treatment.”

Coroner Jorgensen reiterated his conclusions.

“It appears that an unforeseen collateral consequence of the stresses of ‘Shelter at Home’ which resulted in isolation, lack of community and companionship is taking its toll on the most vulnerable of our society,” he said. “If you know of people who are at high risk -- known drug users, those in rehabilitation, persons living alone, having personal, financial or marital difficulty, mental health issues or depression -- please reach out (you can still wear masks and social distance) and talk to them and see if they need companionship, support or help.

“These are difficult times made worse when an individual has drug and/or mental health issues. We are all in this together and need to reach out to all of those who are vulnerable in this difficult time.
