Suited For a Cause: from college project to social enterprise David Rojas Jr. is the founder of TA98, a social enterprise that aims to decrease unemployment rates among 16- to 24-year-olds through entrepreneurship. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Rojas Jr. will talk about his experience when he presents Suited for a Cause: From College Project to Social Enterprise, this year’s Cesar Chavez lecture at Elmhurst College.

While in college, Rojas Jr. was awarded a fellowship that enabled him to design a paid summer internship program for first-generation college students in his neighborhood of South Lawndale (Little Village). He created an experience that encouraged black and Latino youth to see themselves as global change agents and strive to obtain higher educational degrees.

is now TA98. His enterprise has served more than 350 young adults throughout the West and South sides of Chicago, and has gathered more than $250,000 worth of workforce development resources.

The Cesar Chavez Intercultural Lecture will begin David Rojas Jr. at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. in Irion Hall, Buik Recital Hall (elmhurst.edu/campusmap).

Hospital Foundation awards Myers Endowed Scholarships

The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded $5,000 Thomas O. Myers, Jr. and Shirley L. Myers Endowed Scholarships to Erik Borgehammar of Naperville and Lauren Monaco of Downers Grove.

The scholarships are awarded every year to children of Elmhurst Hospital employees who are pursuing careers in healthcare.

The Myers Endowed Scholarships were first awarded in 2004 in appreciation for the high quality and compassionate care provided by the staff of Elmhurst Hospital to those living and working in the communities it serves.

Borgehammar, a 2019 graduate of Naperville North High School, will attend Macalester College in Minnesota. He plans to major in neuroscience and statistics and pursue a medical degree. His father, Magnus Borgehammar, is a physical therapist at Elmhurst Hospital.

• Senate Bill 1952, signed Wednesday, Aug. 7, is aimed at recruiting and retaining qualified teachers in Illinois.

It removes the requirement that teachers must pass a basic skills test to be licensed; permits K-12 student teachers and early childhood student teachers to be paid;

and creates a refund program for teachers in underfunded, hard-tostaff school districts to recoup the cost of the teacher performance assessment.

The General Assembly passed 599 bills this legislative session, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed 370 of them and vetoed just three as of Aug. 12.

He approved of more than 150 of those bills Aug. 9 as the clock ticks on the 226 remaining measures which passed both houses of the Legislature but have not yet been acted upon by the governor.

Per the state Constitution, the General Assembly must send any bill that clears both houses to the governor within 30 days of its official passage in the second house.

Once it is sent to the governor, he has 60 days to sign it, or veto it partially or completely.

Bills not acted upon by the governor become law at the end of the 60 days, per the Constitution.

All pieces of legislation to pass both houses have officially been sent to the governor, as the latest date to do so for the final bills passed would have been 30 days after the General Assembly’s June 2 adjournment. This means the governor has a little more than two weeks left to act on the remaining bills.

In November, the General Assembly is scheduled to return for a “veto session” in which lawmakers decide if they want to overturn, with a three-fifths majority vote in each house, the governor’s veto of any legislation.

Of the three bills Pritzker has vetoed, two of them contained language that was “substantially similar” to others he signed,

meaning their passage would have been duplicative and unnecessary.

House Bill 3590 pertained to the state income tax of some gambling winnings, which was language included in Senate Bill 690. The other, House Bill 423, temporarily eliminated the basic skills test for teachers, which was permanently eliminated in another measure.

The other measure vetoed by Pritzker passed 57-0 in the Senate and 75-41 in the House. It could be a candidate for an override in the November session. Senate Bill 2026 did not “afford the state enough flexibility” to run certain Medicaid-funded programs, according to Pritzker’s veto message.

Cullerton pleads not guilty in federal court

Charged with receiving about $274,000 in salaries and benefits while performing little or no work

Illinois State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) pleaded not guilty last Friday to federal charges of embezzlement.

A federal grand jury recently indicted Cullerton, charging him with 39 counts of embezzlement, one count of conspiracy and one count of making false statements.

The indictment alleged that Cullerton received about $274,000 in benefits from Teamsters Joint Council 25 and the Teamsters Local Union 734 Health and Welfare Fund despite performing little or no work. He reportedly received those benefits between 2013 and 2016, while he was serving in the Illinois State Senate.

Cullerton was elected to the Villa Park Village Board as a trustee in 2005. In 2009, he was elected Villa

Park Village President. Cullerton was elected to the Illinois State Senate, representing the 23rd District, in 2012. He was re-elected in 2016 and 2018.

According to multiple media reports, Cullerton appeared in court for his arraignment last Friday in Chicago. He pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance.

Lissa Druss, a spokesperson for Cullerton, issued a brief statement on Friday.

“Today is another step in seeking justice for Mr. Cullerton,” stated Druss. “He will continue to fight these untrue allegations in court until his name is cleared.”

The indictment alleges that Cullerton conspired with the former

president of Teamsters Joint Council 25—John Coli Sr.—to embezzle money from the Teamsters. Coli allegedly hired Cullerton as a purported full-time employee and organizer for Teamsters Joint Council 25 in early 2013.

Cullerton allegedly received about $188,000 in salary; about $64,000 in health and welfare plan and benefit plan contributions, and over $21,000 in reimbursed medical claims while performing little or no work for the organization.

The Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry very recently was the recipient of a donation from a Boy Scout in Troop 199 In Villa Park.

Boy Scout Jack Weaver was looking for a project to serve those communities to work toward achieving Eagle Scout, and decided on the project of renovating the stock room at the food pantry.

The pantry, located in the lower level of the First United Methodist Church in Lombard, had been using “older” donated tables, and was in need of shelving that would allow the pantry to stock additional items as they become available.

Jack and his fellow scouts cleaned and painted the room, put

up new window blinds and built heavy-duty shelves from wood that the scouts purchased. The scouts put in hundreds of hours on this project; the wood was pre-cut by the scouts, and the shelves built on site during a Saturday afternoon.

“The result is not only a great looking, cleaner, brighter stock room, but the shelving nearly doubled the capacity that can be stocked, sorted and rotated,” according to Larry Hebert, director of operations. “The Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry is extremely grateful to Jack and Troop 199. The scouts also have a new understanding of how they can serve their community.”

Pritzker signs bills expanding state’s medical marijuana law

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated a pair of new laws Aug. 12 that expand the state’s medical marijuana program, including one that gives students more options for taking the drug at school.

“As we continue to reform state government so that it better serves its families, we must do so in a way that advances dignity, empathy, opportunity and grace. In each of these things, this legislation moves us forward,” Pritzker said at a bill-signing ceremony in Springfield.

One of the bills expands a 2018 law known as “Ashley’s Law,” which authorizes schools to allow parents, guardians or other caregivers to administer cannabis-infused products to a student who is authorized to use medical marijuana.

The law is named after Ashley Surin, a Schaumburg student who uses marijuana-based products to manage a seizure disorder she developed at age 3 while undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer she had had since age 2.

She won the right to use marijuana-infused products at school in a federal court battle that was decided in Janu-

Since enactment of the first medical marijuana law in Illinois in 2013, Pritzker noted, more than 80,000 patients across the state have received authority to use marijuana to treat certain medical conditions.

Under Senate Bill 455, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2020, schools will be required to allow a school nurse or administrator to administer cannabis-infused products to a student who is a registered qualifying patient. It also allows students to self-administer the medication, under the direct supervision of a nurse or school administrator, and it expands a student’s access to the drug to include before- and after-school activities.

Pritzker also noted the signing of Senate Bill 2023, which he actually signed Friday, expanding and making permanent the medical cannabis pilot program, which was scheduled to sunset next year.

Among other things, it adds 11 conditions for which a person may use medical cannabis, including autism, chronic pain, migraines, osteoarthritis and anorexia nervosa. It also allows qualifying veterans access to medical marijuana as part of an Opioid Alternative Pilot Program.

Strong support in Illinois CD-14 for term limits on Congress U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the non-partisan national movement to limit terms for elected officials, praises James Marter, 2020 U.S. House candidate for Illinois U.S. House (District 14), for signing the pledge for an amendment to term limit Congress. Previously, two other candidates in the race, Ted Gradel and Jim Oberweis also promised to support term limits on Congress.

Currently, U.S. Term Limits has the support of nearly 70 pledge signers in Congress. USTL President Philip Blumel commented on the pledge.

“This strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to put self-interest aside to follow the will of the people,” he said. “America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

The U.S. Term Limits amendment pledge is provided to every announced candidate for federal office.

It reads as follows: “I pledge that as a member of Congress, I will cosponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits amendment of three (3) House terms and two (2) Senate terms and no longer limit.”

The U.S. Term Limits constitutional amendment has been introduced in both the U.S. Senate

by Senator Ted Cruz (SJR1) and the U.S. House by Representative

Francis Rooney (HJR20).

“We have seen a dramatic increase in supporters wanting term limits on Congress,” Blumel noted.

“More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through congressional term limits.”

According to the latest nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoy wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states: “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups.

An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a constitutional amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”

“America is in trouble,” Blumel concluded. “Our career politicians have let the people down. It is time to return control of our nation to the people. It is time for a constitutional amendment limiting congressional terms.”

The term limits amendment resolutions would require a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate, and ratification by 38 states, in order to become part of the U.S. Constitution.

Congressional term limits is the one bipartisan issue supported by both President Trump and former President Obama.

Glowiak Hilton’s measure to protect privacy of assault survivors now law The addresses of Illinois survivors of sexual assault will now be kept confidential. thanks to State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton.

House Bill 2818 empowers the Attorney General’s Office to help keep the home addresses of survivors private from their attackers and stalkers.

It was signed into law last week.

“When our survivors take the brave step of seeking justice, they aren’t just leaving a painful situation behind: they are often making themselves the target of a violent person who knows them intimately,” Glowiak Hilton said. “As they strive for justice, we must take the essential

steps to protect them as they seek it.”

The new law will allow survivors of sexual abuse or stalking to list the Attorney General’s Office as their contact address instead of revealing their actual address, avoiding any risk that their abuser might locate them.

The program is currently established for victims of domestic violence. House Bill 2818 expands its availability to all survivors of sexual abuse and stalking.

The bipartisan measure goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2021.

Reader replies to man who put down IPI I would like to respond to Mr. [Jon] Baker’s Letter To The Editor in the August 15th edition of the Elmhurst Independent, bashing the Illinois Policy Institute. His letter was neither accurate nor intellectually honest.

The only thing racist about the controversial cartoon was its accurate depiction of the brutal racism and bigotry of Chicago Machine Politics. If the man was black, and the kid was white, would Mr. Baker still view it as racist? My guess is YES, if it could be used to make a republican or conservative look bad, which is what the calling out of the IPI cartoon was all about. IPI was simply pointing out how Chicago is hiding its wealth in special taxing districts to give out corporate tax breaks while seriously under funding it’s school system and that public schools in the Chicago’s black community are hurt the worst. The City of Chicago has a long history of racism, as evidenced by the stories on the news about Chicago’s Department of Water Management. By the way, the former IPI people who were let go by the governor DID NOT author the cartoon!

Regarding Mr. Baker’s claim that the Illinois Policy Institute is a “propaganda mill that generally works in the service of those with a far right agenda” is utter nonsense. Mr. Baker clearly has no idea what goals that IPI works to accomplish. The IPI works on behalf of the citizens of

Illinois every day to reduce the size of government, fight for lower taxes, and improve education in our public schools. They are one of the few outlets in Illinois that loudly decries the excessive power of longtime House Speaker Michael Madigan. They also fight for much needed reform of our states’ pension system, which is currently $234 BILLION in the red!

In 2018, the Chicago Sun-Times wrote that, “its studies and opinion pieces on cutting government spending and boosting transparency became must-read material to many Republicans, some Democrats —

and the governor of Illinois.” Quite a statement from a left-leaning newspaper.

I wonder what part of any of this Mr. Baker considers working in the service of the far right? Is attempting to improve education in the black community working in the service of the far right? Mr. Baker, the next time you submit a letter to the editor of the Elmhurst Independent, please do some homework first.

is human nature and the weakness of human nature that leads to Democrats, Republicans and those not in public office to commit crimes. We should be intolerant of it, speak out against it, and work together on a bipartisan basis to avoid it.”

The senator addressed Trump’s continued consideration of forgiving Blagojevich’s 14-year prison sentence, which he received in part for his efforts to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama when he

became president.

Durbin told reporters he thought the judgment Blagojevich received was “excessive” and “does not really match up with the crimes that he committed.”

“You know, what he did was wrong,” Durbin said. “He was arrested, prosecuted, convicted obviously, incarcerated, disgraced and separated from his family for seven-plus

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill expanding insurance coverage for Illinoisans suffering from Lyme disease and discussed other health-related measures at a news conference in his State Capitol office Aug. 13.

The Democrat also touted a bill which requires insurers to cover the cost of medically necessary epinephrine shots for children, and once again said he was open to signing a “stronger” bill pertaining to the emissions of ethylene oxide, a known cancer-causing chemical, in Illinois.

House Bill 889, signed Tuesday, requires insurance companies to cover long-term antibiotic therapy, office visits, testing and treatment for tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease. It takes effect immediately and opens the door for coverage of experimental drugs if they are federally approved.

Pritzker said late-stage Lyme disease treatments can cost thousands of dollars.

“With this new legislation, Illinois is declaring that insurance can no longer put up barriers against those living with Lyme disease,” he said.

Rep. Daniel Swanson, a Republican from Alpha, was the House sponsor of the bill, which passed unanimously in both chambers.

“Illinois is one of the leading states with moving forward with mandated insurance,” he said. “We spoke to people in Arkansas, Michigan, Missouri, all across the nation of people saying how did you do this? Well, it takes a team. It takes the 101st General Assembly, the House and the Senate to push this forward.”

Jennifer Russell, director of the Illinois Lyme Association, said her daughter, Laura, is nearing the end of several years of treatment for Lyme disease.

“This legislation is pivotal in the state of Illinois,” she said. “Many in Illinois are suffering from tickborne illness. Those with state-regulated insurance or private pay are in most cases only receiving 21 days of treatment. … Many are losing their homes, their businesses and their pensions to try to pay for the continued treatments, and this legislation provides them with desperately needed options.”

the bill to expand epinephrine coverage to all persons 18 years of age and younger beginning Jan. 1, 2020.

“We are now on the forefront of food allergy safety in Illinois,” he said.

Pritzker noted the cost of an epinephrine injection, known commonly by its brand name EpiPen, has risen 400 percent in recent years, now costing close to $700 without insurance, and the medication expires each year.

“To a child who cannot afford an EpiPen, one peanut, one bee sting, one exposure to latex can mean anaphylactic shock and potentially death,” he said. “That’s unconscionable.”

Pritzker also responded to questions about ethylene oxide emissions, another public health issue that has made headlines in recent weeks because of a public fight to prevent Sterigenics, a medical supply sterilization company in Willowbrook, from being able to reopen.

Pritzker was asked about the potential of a special session regarding a bill to ban ethylene oxide emissions, and said he was looking for a stronger bill than one filed by Republican state Sen. John Curran, of Downers Grove.

“We’re continuing to work toward it. You know, as I’ve said, I will sign the strongest legislation that they put forward. I know that Senator Curran has put something forward, but as has been discussed, that legislation has flaws in it that wouldn’t work,” Pritzker said.

The governor noted the bill sponsored by Curran refers to companies holding permits, which Sterigenics would no longer need and thus would not be affected.

“So we need to have a stronger piece of legislation. I have not heard from (House Republican) Leader (Jim) Durkin about his views on what the legislation should look like.

But again, I think we’re all open to a stronger version of the legislation that they already put forward. And that I signed.”

Celebrate safely: This Labor Day, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over As Illinoisans gear up to mark the end of summer with Labor Day celebrations throughout the state, the Villa Park Police Department announced its plans for a traffic safety campaign focusing on drunk, unbuckled and distracted drivers.

“Our goal is to help ensure that our community’s residents and visitors make it home safely after the party ends,” said Sgt. James Cihak. “We’ll be out in force to keep impaired drivers off the roads. If you’ll be celebrating, we urge you to plan ahead for a sober ride. It could be a matter of life or death.”

The Villa Park Police Department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement across Illinois for the increased statewide effort.

The high-visibility crackdown will run now through the holiday weekend into the early morning hours of Sept. 3.

Before the fun starts this Labor Day, remember to designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive drunk. Even a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times, making driving unsafe.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The crackdown runs concurrently with a media campaign reminding motorists that impaired driving has “Life or Death” consequences.

Durbin said there is “no reason to turn back to it,” and that he thinks the death penalty does not have the “deterrent effect” its supporters say it does.

“I don’t think it’s any day at the beach to be given a life sentence,” he said. “I don’t think that is going to stop these people who have reached such a level of mental anguish that they go out and kill innocent people.”

When he had an opportunity to talk agriculture, the senator had a message for Illinois farmers, one he said is “a little touchy”—climate change, and how the Prairie State’s agriculture industry can benefit from the changes and adaptations that result.

He pointed to wind turbines as an example of a way farmers can benefit from green energy. The land chosen gets an economic boost—“a pretty good deal,” Durbin said— and the turbine does not interfere with the agriculture business of the farm, he added.

“There are ways to reduce the carbon and greenhouse gas emissions that the farmers can be part of and do in a way that comes back to their economic benefit,” Durbin said. “I use the wind turbines as an example—20 years ago, people didn’t see this coming, but now it’s

Mowing down a challenge, and giving a helping hand Young resident cuts lawns for free; earns a free mower and equipment

Villa Park teenager Sean Kling recently completed the “50 Yard Challenge” by mowing 50 lawns for free for some of his fellow Garden Village residents.

The 14-year-old Kling, who started his freshman year at Willowbrook High School last week, accepted the challenge at the beginning of the summer after his mother Jeanette noticed it on the Internet.

Kling cut his 50th lawn for free a few weeks ago.

“I like helping my community,” said Kling, who attended Jackson Middle School before going to Willowbrook. The enterprising Kling started his own landscaping business—Kling Lawn Service—earlier this year. While he cuts lawns for money, Kling was happy to accept the challenge and provide free lawn care for some Villa Park residents.

The 50 Yard Challenge is the brainchild of Rodney Smith Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama. A few years ago, Smith observed an elderly man cutting his lawn. Smith decided to help the man. Less than two months

later, Smith had cut 100 lawns for free.

Smith went on to create Raising Men Lawn Care Service, which promotes free lawn care for the elderly, disabled, single mothers, veterans and anyone in need of help. Raising Men Lawn Care Service’s website is weareraisingmen.com.

Smith has traveled to and cut lawns in all 50 states. He was recently featured on ABC’s Good Morning America. The program noted that Smith drove his SUV through all of the lower 48 states. Delta Airlines helped Smith travel to Alaska and Hawaii after Smith reached out to the airline on Twitter. Smith is traveling the country this year in a specific effort to cut lawns and raise awareness for veterans.

In addition to mowing lawns during his travels, Smith visits boys and girls (the Raising Men Lawn Care Service’s 50 Yard Challenge is open to boys and girls) who have completed the challenge. Smith presents them with a new lawn mower and other equipment, as well

as a black T-shirt.

The mowers received a colored T-shirt for each 10 lawns they mowed—the first 10 earned an orange shirt; the 20th lawn earned a green shirt. The 30th lawn brought a blue shirt, while the 40th lawn earned a red shirt. The challenge allows participants to mow the same lawn more than once on the road to completing the challenge.

Smith visited Villa Park earlier this month to present Kling with a new Yard Machines lawn mower, along with a blower and a trimmer manufactured by Remington.

Kling has a trailer hooked up to the back of his bicycle to haul his new mower around and continue his landscaping business. Before obtaining the new mower, he used his family’s own mower, or in some cases, the mower of the resident whose lawn he cut. In addition to mowing lawns, Kling has performed a few other landscaping projects, such as moving rocks.

“I hope to either become an electrician or own my own business,”

said Kling of his future plans. As of now, he is hoping for the right number of clients—not too many to overwhelm his schedule, but enough to keep some cash flowing. In ad-

dition to school, Kling’s schedule includes practices and meets with Willowbrook’s boys cross country team. The program held its first practice of the season last week.

Addison Trail boys soccer team poised for more success Hernandez top returning goal scorer for Blazers

Boys soccer continues to thrive at Addison Trail.

Coach Ryan Dini noted this year’s program has 100 total players across five levels (freshman A and B, sophomore, JV and varsity).

And at the varsity level, the Blazers have won two regional titles in the last three years, including a crown last year. Addison Trail is coming off a 2018 campaign where it went 17-6 and took second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 5-1 mark (losing only 2-1 to Morton).

Back for the Blazers are seniors Leo Acosta (center-mid), Martin Murillo (left back) and Ernesto Padua (goalie), along with junior Anthony Hernandez (forward).

Hernandez logged 11 goals and four assists last year, while Acosta had seven goals and five assists.

Padua had one goal and four assists last season. Also back is senior

midfielder Uriel Rojo.

Dini took time to laud the efforts of Rojo. “He constantly wins back 50/50 balls and pressures at a high work rate,” he said. “Last season, he was a role player because of the excellent team we had. He was able to learn from five players who we sent to play college soccer. He has turned into an all-in-type player.

He also has excellent ball control and is a great distributor. We are really looking forward to seeing the impact he can make in 80 minutes of a soccer game.”

Key newcomers to the team include juniors Angel Gomez (defender), Jose Vega (defender), Ray Fischer (defender), Adrian Guzman (outside mid) and sophomore Alex Sandoval (midfielder).

“My overall outlook on the season is very positive,” said Dini, in his eighth season at the helm (8555-9). “We have a really good mix of juniors and seniors and have some depth. If I had to predict a record, I would say 12-6-2 for the regular season. We had an excellent summer. We just need to keep getting chemistry with our starters since we do have three players coming from club/academy who

didn’t play last year. Our strengths are our team speed, ball control and depth. Our weakness right now is finishing at times.”

Dini noted the team is comprised of nine seniors, nine juniors and one sophomore. Addison Trail went 6-2-1 in summer league play and made the final-four teams of the playoffs. The Blazers lost in a shootout in the semifinals. “We have three academy players who are playing high-school soccer for the first time, which should really increase our skill level on the field,” he said. “We are a very fast and technical soccer team.”

Once again, Dini has stacked Addison Trail’s schedule with contests against top-flight competition. “Our schedule is loaded with quality teams,” he said. “We host our own eight-team Joe Novy tournament and are in the PepsiCo Showdown where we have been in the top bracket the past two seasons (80 teams). We look to compete for a conference title after having placed second twice in the past three seasons. We should be in the top 20 in the preseason rankings and we expect to have another solid season.”

The Warriors posted an 11-3 dual-meet record a year ago and took third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

On the personnel side, Walker welcomes back veteran Logan Rattana, who took eighth in the WSC Gold tournament a year ago.

Willowbrook kicked off the season this week with a busy slate.

Earlier in the week, the Warriors were slated to face West Chicago in a non-conference tilt at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Today, the Warriors are scheduled to head to Oak Park Country Club for another non-conference match against Elmwood Park.

Next week, Willowbrook heads

to Oswego for the Panther invitational (Tuesday, Aug. 27) before playing in the 51st annual Fenton invitational at White Pines in Bensenville (Saturday, Aug. 31).

Also on Aug. 31, Willowbrook will host its own Willowbrook invitational at Sugar Creek.

Other highlights on the schedule include a pair of quads on Sept. 14 (at White Pines hosted by Leyden) and on Sept. 26 (at Oak Meadows hosted by Addison Trail).

The WSC Gold meet is slated for Oct. 1.

Fenton girls volleyball team looking to build upon 2018 success Bison coming off 24-win season; Krebasch headlines list of returners

The Fenton girls volleyball team enjoyed plenty of success a year ago.

The Bison went 24-12 and finished 3-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Now, Fenton is looking to keep the success train rolling and has the roster to continue to fuel those expectations.

Coach Kelly Torres returns a host of players, including senior middle blocker Julianna Krebasch, who put down 149 kills and registered 30

blocks last season. Senior outside hitter Britania Aguilar had 36 kills and 13 blocks, while senior setter Noha Zaggoti served at a 91 percent clip. Senior outside hitter Iza Faron had 22 digs last year and senior right-side hitter Sydney Minard had 46 aces.

New to the team are sophomores Hailey Miller (setter-defensive specialist) and middle blocker Abby Boehm.

One place, in particular, that Torres feels the Bison will excel at is on offense. “Our strengths this season certainly will be our front-row attacks,” she said. “We are very strong across the front row when it comes to hitting. The offense is looking very good for this early in the season. We feel that we will be able to attack from all over the front row.”

Torres added the energy in the practice gym has been high thus far. “The girls have been coming to practice very excited, and many of them are eager for their opportunity to contribute to the program at the varsity level,” she said.

Fenton continues to double-down on the defensive side of the net.

“This is a work in progress,” said Torres. “We have many girls who are competing for spots in serve-receive. We will continue to work on this each practice and get all the girls as many reps as possible.”

Zaggoti takes over the setting position this season. “Noha has spent the last two years on varsity learning from and practicing with graduated Mackenzie Miller,” Torres noted. “Now, it is her time to shine.

This year, veteran Knights coach Don Sujack’s lineup was slated to consist of six golfers, split right down the middle. Three returners and three promising freshmen.

All of which has Sujack optimistic about his team’s 2019 prospects.

First the returnees. The Knights welcome back senior Louis Narcisi. “Lou has the game and the maturity,” said Sujack. “He’s been on the varsity for three years now. He enjoys golf, and eats this stuff up.

He’s a great kid and he’s our captain. He’s a kid who does things the right way.”

Also back is senior Shane Rollins. “Shane looks like he’s taking things very seriously,” said Sujack.

“He looks poised to have a good year for us.”

IC Catholic Prep’s other returner is junior Michael Hilgart. “Michael is a really solid putter for us,” said Sujack. “His short game will keep him in a lot of matches. Shane and Michael have been strong participants in this program for two and three years now.”

The freshmen crew features Jann Atendito, PJ Wisniewski and Nick Zanoni. “We have a large group of talented freshmen in the program

that have some tournament experience,” said Sujack. “There will be some serious competition with our returning golfers to get into the starting lineup. We have a lot of guys on this team who are looking to make their mark. It’s a good, healthy competition. Someone will play better than someone else every week. There are going to be opportunities to step into the lineup.”

Sujack likes the fact the Knights partake in the Glen Oak event each year. “That’s a big-boy golf course with big-boy competition,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for the guys to get their wits about them.”

The Knights also are part of the Mundelein invitational field later in the season at Steeple Chase.

“That tournament has teams such as Loyola and New Trier—a lot of good teams,” said Sujack. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to test their games on a big-boy golf course against traditionally strong golf programs.”

The Knights also are slated to host a Class 1A regional this year at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale.

“By the end of September, that will be a strength for us,” said Sujack, whose team will play its home matches at Maple Meadows, save for one contest at the Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison. “That will be very helpful.”

Overall, Sujack is excited about the team’s prospects out of the gates. “I think we could be very competitive right away,” he said.

“As young as we are, we are developing some golf toughness and that will help us later in the year. I suspect things will shift continually throughout the year. It will be fun to see how things shake out.”

A third performer, Dylana Leung, has been a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra since 2010.
