Big Boy No. 4014 draws a crowd Restored steam locomotive passes through the area

Spectators flocked to the area’s Union Pacific Railroad tracks on Friday afternoon to catch a glimpse of Union Pacific’s restored Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive.

The locomotive left southern Wisconsin, on Friday morning. It passed through several area communities, including Elmhurst, Villa Park and Lombard, before arriving in West Chicago on Friday afternoon.

Thousands of people flocked to West Chicago over the weekend to see No. 4014 on display. The locomotive departed West Chicago on Tuesday and headed for Iowa. No. 4014 is touring portions of Union Pacific’s system this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.

According to Union Pacific, 25 Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad. Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in 1941. It was retired about 20 years later after traveling over 1 million miles in service. The Big Boys primarily ran between Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Ogden, Utah.

Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from a California rail museum in 2013. The locomotive was relocated to Cheyenne for an extensive restoration.

No. 4014 is the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive. Seven other Big Boys are on display around the United States.

National organization seeks input from not-for-profits Diversity Practices Survey now available

The Independent has learned that a national organization known as Nonprofit HR is seeking non-profit groups throughout the country to take part in its survey on diversity.

Below is the information provided by the organization: Diversity has increasingly become a top priority for nonprofits. Getting

to the benefits of having a diverse workforce does not have to be grueling, in fact, many tools are available to assist you.

An objective of Nonprofit HR’s Diversity Practices Survey is to collect, document and publish unprecedented data which will assist you in strengthening your existing plan or creating a new one.

Diversity in the workplace is defined as intentionally recruiting, hiring and retaining employees who may have differing backgrounds, educations and experiences. All encompassing, diversity is broad and includes race and ethnicity, physical appearance, gender, national origin,

religious and political beliefs, education, age, mental and physical conditions, or sexual orientation.

From turnover to disgruntled stakeholders, nonprofits are realizing the impact on their mission if they do not have a diverse workforce. It’s even worse when staff and organizational practices are not aligned with the communities they represent. As a result, organizations have fallen under scrutiny by the public and their communities as the importance of diversity comes to the forefront.

A study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that “increasing the diversity of leadership teams leads to more and better in-

County HOPE Taskforce supports new partner to combat opioid crisis On Monday, July 22, the DuPage County Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce announced its support of a proposed Haymarket DuPage Behavioral Health Clinic to provide treatment for substance use disorder in DuPage County.

Nationally and locally, drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. In 2018, there were 98 opioid overdose deaths along with 592 non-fatal opioid overdoses in DuPage County.

The HOPE Taskforce, as a joint operation of the County Board and Board of Health, has been charged to advise DuPage County elected leadership on needed program development, infrastructure and policy recommendations to address this issue.

“As we continue to battle the opioid crisis, we have determined that treatment for substance use disorder is an access to care issue, particularly for our underserved residents,” said Dr. Lanny Wilson, HOPE Taskforce Co-chair. “The proposed

Access to evidence-based treatment is an essential part of health and recovery. According to a 2017 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), only 19 percent of individuals with a substance use disorder received treatment. In Illinois, the latest statistics (2015) show only 11.7 percent of those with a substance use disorder received treatment.

“The impacts and benefits of the proposed Haymarket DuPage will vastly increase access to comprehensive treatment and recovery resources and improve the overall health of DuPage County residents,” said Greg Hart HOPE Taskforce Cochair.

The members of the HOPE Taskforce recommend that DuPage County leaders support Haymarket Center DuPage as a new community partner to combat the opioid crisis.

Easterseals DuPage and Fox Valley (ESDFV) is holding a helicopter ball drop in Villa Park on Saturday, Aug. 17. The grand prize winner of the related raffle will win up to $10,000.

The entry fee to join the raffle is $25 per ticket. The raffle is open to people 18 years of age and older. The contest’s net proceeds (gross revenue receipts minus raffle related expenses) will be distributed for charitable purposes. All net proceeds will be used to support ESDFV programs. Entries for the grand prize raffle must be received

by noon on Aug. 16.

The ESDFV facility is located at 830 S. Addison Ave., Villa Park. Each week, the facility serves more than 1,000 infants, children and adults with developmental delays and disabilities.

The helicopter ball drop will take place at about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Lions Park, 320 E. Wildwood Ave. Participants in the contest do not need to be present to win the grand prize.

Each entry will be assigned to a ball that will be dropped from a helicopter.

The ball closest to the target wins the $10,000 grand prize.

A maximum of 3,000 tickets will be sold. The $10,000 grand prize is dependent on selling a minimum of 1,500 tickets. The grand prize amount will be adjusted based on the number

The Villa Park Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Burgers, Bags and Business gathering on Wednesday, Aug. 7. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. near the Rugaard Gazebo, located near Ardmore Avenue and Park Boulevard.

The food includes gourmet charcoal burgers provided by Villa Park’s Mike’s Market.

There will also be plenty of refreshing beverages, as well as a bags tournament.

Villa Park Police Department to conduct roadside safety check Aug. 3, Aug. 19 A roadside safety check will be conducted by the Villa Park Police Department during the hours of 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Aug. 3 and Aug. 10.

The safety check is being conducted to promote the safety and well-being of the motoring public and to provide a deterrent for those who might violate Illinois Vehicle Code statutes and village ordinances.

Plans have been established to conduct the check at 501 East St Charles Road. The roadside safety check will be conducted according to the guidelines set forth by the courts.

James Cihak.

The Villa Park Police Department made one felony drug arrest, issued three illegal transportation of alcohol citations, two uninsured motorist citations, two distracted driving citations five non-moving violation citations and 15 moving violation citations.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this statewide effort to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use.

The Villa Park Police Department joined forces with more than 160 other state and local law enforcement agencies conducting the crackdown, which featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.

The recent law enforcement effort was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs.

Cullerton works to reduce forensic backlog

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) praised the Illinois State Police crime lab’s efforts to reduce the massive backlog of cases awaiting DNA analysis.

In July, ISP posted 26 job postings for forensic scientists to get to work on the massive backlog of cases. Filling these positions will allow the agency to address the backlog.

“Forensic evidence can make or break the outcome of a case,” Cullerton said.

“This highly scientific process continues to become increasingly important in solving crimes. The Illinois State Police is working diligently to help solve this crisis and eliminate this catastrophic backlog once and for all, and to do it, they need more experts.”

Cullerton sponsored House Joint Resolution 7, which directs the Illinois State Police to take all steps possible to comply with the Federal Rapid DNA Act of 2017. The measure was adopted

by the House and Senate with unanimous support in May. In today’s climate where police and prosecutors are increasingly scrutinized about their procedures, DNA evidence is crucial to the successful prosecution of criminal cases. The current backlog of biological evidence includes numerous cases of violent crimes, including murders, shootings, and criminal sexual assaults, that end up being delayed for long periods of time. It typically takes at least one year for biological evidence to be processed by the state crime labs.

“I’m glad to see ISP taking steps to drastically improve turnaround and ensure they are in compliance with federal protocols,” Cullerton said. “The goal of our legislation was to jump start this process to ensure justice is delivered swiftly.”

The bipartisan initiative is sponsored by state Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) in the House.

My husband and I have worked hard – given due diligence – to raising boys who respect not only their sister, but all girls and women.

They now have a niece and I think she furthers their realization about how precious females are – how honored and safe and protected their

“We need to find solutions to end homelessness among youth in our communities, and to provide stability and protection to children whose basic needs are not being met,” Glowiak said. “The State of Illinois has a responsibility to fight this crisis and provide our children housing security.”

According to the General Assembly’s findings, one out of 10 people between the ages of 18-25 is experiencing homelessness for some amount of time over a 12-month period. For those ages 13-17, one in 30

experiences a form of homelessness over a 12-month period.

Research shows that homeless children are 87 percent more likely to drop out of school, while those who drop out of high school are four-and-a-half times more likely to become homeless as adults.

“Stable housing is fundamental in ways so many of us take for granted,” Glowiak said. “It’s the basis for academic and social opportunities. My hope is this subcommittee will create a long-term path to help us reach our goal to eliminate homelessness among our children once and for all.”

The law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

Mariners roll to Blue Division championship Winning the Blue title sends Villa Park to Red Division in 2020

The Villa Park Mariners finished the 2019 DuPage Swim and Dive Conference season with a championship performance at Saturday’s Blue Division “A” Meet in Glendale Heights.

The Mariners decisively won firstplace honors at the four-team event.

Villa Park piled up 1,043 team points to win the meet. Glendale Heights placed second with 691 points. Wood Dale (506) claimed third place, while Hanover Park (384) finished fourth.

The Mariners’ first-place finish in the Blue Division will send the program to the conference’s Red Division next season. Addison, which finished fourth in Saturday’s Red Division ‘A’ Meet in Roselle, will compete in the Blue Division in 2020.

Villa Park won 32 of 58 individual events during Saturday’s season-ending meet. The Mariners also won 12 of the competition’s 20 relay races.

Villa Park’s three-time individual champions in the conference meet included the 8-and-under girls level’s Phoebe Aldana, who won the 50-yard freestyle, the 25-yard backstroke and the 25-yard breaststroke.

Naomi Aldana provided three wins in the 9-10 girls level, swimming to victories in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard butterfly.

The Mariners’ three-time individual winners also included a pair

of swimmers in the 15-18 girls level. DeAnna Tate won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard individual medley and the 50-yard backstroke.

Carolyn Burns won the 100-yard freestyle, the 50-yard butterfly and the 50-yard breaststroke.

Ben Evenson and Ian Mueller of the 9-10 boys level each won two events. Evenson won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

He edged Mueller by three-hundredths of a second in the 100-yard freestyle race. Mueller won the 100yard individual medley and the 50yard breaststroke.

Audrey Morgan won two races (the 50-yard freestyle and the 50yard butterfly) in the 11-12 girls division. Lauren Barager also won two events (the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke) in the same level.

Benjamin Dean earned two wins (the 100-yard individual medley and the 50-yard breaststroke) in the 1112 boys division. Jake Koterba also provided two wins (the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke) in 11-12 boys competition.

Both relay foursomes finished more than 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up team.

Villa Park’s 11-12 girls foursome of Lauren Barager, Izzie Evenson, Maisie Thompson and Audrey Morgan provided a pair of first-place relay finishes. The 13-14 boys unit of James Burns, Alexander Dean, Jason Hasler and Alex Vega also accounted for two relay victories. The 15-18 girls quartet of DeAnna Tate, Kelsey Fitzgerald, Carolyn Burns and Caitlin Brennan also provided two relay wins.

Villa Park’s 8-and-under girls foursome of Lydia Aldana, Brooke Turner, Phoebe Aldana and Colleen Pienkos won the 100-yard medley relay. The 11-12 boys team of Benjamin Dean, Matthew Fitzgerald, Jake Koterba and Tyler Thomas won the 200-yard medley relay.

Each relay victory at Saturday’s meet added 18 points to a team’s total score. A second-place relay finish was worth 10 points. Each individual win at the meet accounted for nine points. A second-place individual finish was good for seven points.

New principal at Ardmore School

School District 45 recently announced the school board’s approval of a new principal at Ardmore Elementary School for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.

Kristin Simpkins is the Villa Park school’s new principal. She has 13 years of experience as a principal. Simpkins began her career in Crete-Monee School District 201-U, where she taught sixth and seventh grade and served as an assistant principal SUBMITTED PHOTO Rock Valley Publishing in a K-8 building.

She also served as both an assistant principal and principal in Frankfort School District 157C. She was the principal of Chelsea Intermediate School for nine years. For the last four years, she held the position of middle school principal in Oak Lawn Hometown School District 123 in a building with over 1,100 students and 120 staff. Willowbrook’s Hines reflects on prep baseball career Will continue baseball journey at McHenry County College this fall

Jack Hines had himself one heck of a senior season sendoff.

The recently graduated Willowbrook baseball standout was named the most valuable player of the West Suburban Conference Gold Division, helping the Warriors mow through the seven-team loop with but one loss, an extremely tough feat to accomplish, given the length of the conference season coupled with the volatility of spring weather leading to games usually being stacked one upon the other, thus taxing pitching staffs.

Hines also earned Class 4A allstate honors by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association.

“It meant a lot to me,” said Hines of the honors. “I put in a lot of work and to get that type of recognition felt good.”

Hines said the mental part of his game took a step forward this season. “I think the mental side of my game got stronger,” said Hines, who played shortstop for the Warriors.

“I had the mentality of if I make an error, everything will be alright. I slowed the game down in my mind and that helped me get stronger men-

tally throughout the year.”

Hines said his offensive prowess never was in question. “Hitting always has been the best part of my game,” he said. “I try to put defense first, but I’m always working on hitting. I’m taking endless rounds in the cages.”

Hines, who dabbles in playing a little third base and used to pitch, enjoys playing the shortstop position. “You get to see the whole game there,” he said. “You kind of are the leader of the infield. You are there for everybody else so you make all the plays you can. You need to be strong mentally as a shortstop. You need quick feet and quick hands. It’s a lot of responsibility playing the position. You need to have that mental strength to be that captain and lead everybody.”

Hines is headed north to McHenry County College in Crystal Lake where he will continue his baseball career at the two-year school that has been a decades-old perennial power.

“The coach there presented me with a great opportunity,” he said.

“I really love the campus and everything about it. The coach is really nice and they have been successful the last couple years. I’m excited to head up there.”

Hines said he plans on studying engineering. “I’m not sure what I want to do with that quite yet,” he said. “I’m going to study there and play baseball. I haven’t figured out

everything else yet.”

Hines, who said MCC fall training starts Aug. 12, also was a strong student at Willowbrook, something he said will come in handy at the next level. “It’s always great to have a backup plan,” he said. “You aren’t going to always end up in the major leagues. If something like that doesn’t work out, it’s always nice to have something to fall back on.”

Hines said he would like to move on to a four-year school after his run at MCC ends. “I’m not too sure, but whatever happens with that I know I have a lot of support that I am sure will help me make the right decision,” he said.

Hines played this summer with the Chicago Pirates team based out of Villa Park. “We ended the season about three weeks ago,” he said. “We played in four tournaments and competed in all of them and had a lot of fun.”

Hines, who enjoys fishing in his spare time, has fond memories of his extended time with the Willowbrook varsity baseball team. “Of course,” said Hines, who noted one key memory was watching former Warriors player Jon Kelso hit a long home run against Addison Trail in a game played at Benedictine University in Lisle (“Jonny hit a bomb.”). “Every year it was always winning. It was great to be in that type of atmosphere. There was nothing else like it. I made a lot of lifelong friends.”

Man, 77, dies in single-vehicle crash in Villa Park On Sunday, the Villa Park Police Department responded to the area of southbound Illinois Route 83 at Riverside Drive for a single vehicle crash with injuries.

Responding officers located a 77-year-old man who suffered serious injury. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle. Officers administered lifesaving attempts, and

the driver was transported to a local hospital by the Villa Park Fire Department.

The driver was later pronounced dead. The name of the deceased is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation by Villa Park police detectives and the DuPage County Coroner.

We have also worked to protect our boys – from the world at large because the world can be cruel to anyone. It is the world in which we live.

As a mother of a daughter and of sons I am conflicted. What would I do, how would I feel if my daughter were hurt or attacked physically? What would I do, how would I feel if my sons were hurt or attacked publicly?

In the world we live in, the court of public opinion can take over in the matter of minutes (or perhaps seconds) and people are judged before they have the opportunity to back up their own case. There are always two sides, but in today’s society these are very polarized. You are either in or you are out.

Reputations and careers are lost. Hurt runs rampant – on both sides of the aisle. It is devastating to everyone involved.

It makes it hard to be a parent of both girls and boys. Which side do I take? Am I forced to take a side?

I wanted to end this column with an answer to my own personal dilemma – loving my daughter and loving my sons and wanting to protect them equally – but I don’t have a pat answer. I don’t even have a suggestion. For me this may be a first.

It seems the world has become more divisive, polarized and opinionated than ever before – at least in my lifetime. Our culture is changing, but not all change is good. It feels scary – for my daughter and my sons – the people I brought into this world in an infinite act of optimism.

And that just makes me sad. Momma bear sad – and there isn’t a sad more sad than that.

Addison Trail girls track team breaks numerous school records Addison Braves semi-pro baseball team wrapping up 2019 season

The Addison Trail girls track team achieved a number of milestones during the 2019 spring season.

The Blazers finished fourth in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division at the varsity and freshmen/ sophomore levels. Addison Trail won the Addison Trail and Westmont invitational team titles.

Addison Trail was led by Lizbeth Balbuena and Alexandra Nava.

The Blazers had a total of 12 all-conference performers, a program record. That group includes Balbuena, Juliana Tamayo, Viviana Sanfilippo, Madelyn Ford, Stephanie Avila, Pau-

lina Stachura, Francesca Scarabaggio, Kate Diego, Julia Swierzb, Mia Johnson, Alaisia Hunt and Margaret O’Connell.

Stachura placed fifth in the sectional in the high jump.

Addison Trail also broke a host of school records during the season.

Nava broke the indoor 300-meter school record. Nava, Tamayo, Balbuena and Sanfilippo broke the indoor 1,600 relay record. Tamayo, Balbuena, Sanfilippo and Nileena Mahesh broke the indoor 3,200 relay record.

Tamayo, Balbuena, Sanfilippo and Ford broke the outdoor 3,200 relay record, while Sanfilippo broke the indoor 1,600 and 800 records, as well as the outdoor 1,600 and 3,200 records.

Addison Braves baseball The Addison Braves semi-professional baseball team is close to wrapping up another season on the diamond.

Through late last week the Braves

sported an 8-16 record in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League.

In CSBL action, Addison’s Neil Freeman (Triton College) was fourth in the league in hitting through late last week with a .417 average. Jake Bilotta (Waubonsee Community College) also ranked among the league leaders with a .339 average.

On the mound, Addison’s Chris Hawks (Waubonsee Community College) had a 1.42 ERA through late last week to rank second in the CSBL, while Eric Ryan (Robert Morris University) also was among the league’s best in pitching with a 1.59 ERA. Addison also continues to compete in the Wisconsin State League.

Through late last week, Addison had a 5-22 mark in WSL action. The league features seven teams, including the local Lombard Orioles team, which also is part of the CSBL. The Braves do feature a pair of local players. Trever Fulmer (Addison Trail, Dominican University) and Jon

Elmhurst American Legion baseball wraps up U15 and U19 seasons Post 187 to host Great Lakes Regional tournament next summer in Elmhurst

The Elmhurst American Legion baseball program recently wrapped up two of its three team seasons.

The Post 187 Muddogs U19 team went 1-2 in the 11th District playoffs in Carol Stream, and finished the year with a 10-8 mark.

“We did well,” said Post 187 manager Mike Biondo. “We were a good team that was very young with our pitching. Our bats were there during the regular season, but when it came time for playoffs they kind of became nonexistent.”

Biondo said Post 187 will benefit in the future from the experience players such as Aidan Kress (Fenton), Dave Sykora (IC Catholic Prep) and Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden) gained this season.

“Aiden pitched well and Dave Sykora’s pitching was good,” said Biondo. “Jimmy O’Donnell did well with the bat later on. He was swinging it well. It was a fun group to be around. The future looks good, especially with having established pitching coming back.”

York’s Ian Steinorth also is eligible to come back. He had a 1.56 ERA in his pitching appearances, while Sykora had a 1.91 ERA. “Those are very impressive,” said Biondo.

Steinorth will continue his baseball career at North Central College in Naperville, while Sykora still has two seasons to go at IC Catholic Prep. Kress has two more years at Fenton.

“We were very young, which is a good thing going forward,” said Biondo. “We’re still looking to add four or five more solid pitchers.

We’d like to have that depth, especially when we go into the playoffs.”

Post 187’s U15 team also wrapped up its season. The Muddogs went 2-13-1. “We struggled at times,” said Biondo. “It was a tough season.

The good news is we got to see kids step up and be leaders—guys like Oscar Torres (Fenton). He hit over .480 and is a very vocal kid. He was out there picking up guys as much as he could.”

The U15 Muddogs also received strong play from the likes of George O’Brien (pitcher, IC Catholic Prep), Jake Marshall (catcher, IC Catholic Prep) and Matthew Maziarka (pitcher, Fenton), as well as Damian Pacheco (shortstop and second base, York).

“We had some athletic guys that we could put in certain spots,” said Biondo. “It was tough for us. We were going up against programs that can pick kids from anywhere and everywhere, while we are limited by boundaries. But it’s better to face this tougher competition. It makes them strive for success against these tougher teams instead of going up against weaker teams and winning trophies. And if kids are good, we’re going to move them up to our other

teams. We are here so guys can get better not to stack teams.”

Biondo announced Post 187 will be the host of the Great Lakes Regional American Legion tournament next year (Aug. 5-9, 2020).

“We’re waiting to get things finalized in terms of fields,” he said.

“We’ll have all that locked down come fall or over the winter break.

We’re definitely going to need community support and volunteers.

We’re asking people who would like to volunteer in any way possible to contact the Elmhurst American Legion post.”

Eight teams from eight regions will qualify for the tournament. Post 187, as the host team, earns an automatic bid. “That should help us attract players with the opportunity to play on a higher platform,” said Biondo. “Whoever wins the tournament goes to the American Legion World Series that usually is televised on ESPN and ESPN2, and is held in Shelby, North Carolina.”

Biondo pointed out this year’s World Series is Aug. 18-19 and will be televised on ESPN. Biondo also noted the program likely will not field a U15 team next season. “I think 15 is going to go by the wayside and we will work on 17 and 19,” he said. “It was a lot for me with the management of three teams. We’ll focus on the 17s and 19s teams. We’ve had a lot of success there and we have coaches committed to working with these kids. They know how to make these kids better players and they lead by example.”

Kelso (Willowbrook, UW-Plateville) are on the Addison roster this summer.

The team continues to be under the longtime leadership of general manager Larry Kurkowski. He’s assisted

Earlier this year, a pair of former Braves players were inducted into the CSBL Hall of Fame. Pete Miceli was a player, manager and coach from the mid-1970s to 2015, while Bob Kurzka was a player, manager and coach from the mid-1970s through the early

2000s.

The Braves’ website noted Miceli and Kurzka saved the Braves from folding in 1980 when the Addison Rec Club decided to not sponsor the team.

Miceli and Kurzka came forward and managed as well as performed all the administrative duties through 1988, the team’s website explained.

The Braves have been a semi-professional baseball team since 1975.

The Braves play their home games at Community Park in Addison.

Fenton’s Pietrucha improves at the plate Bison senior-to-be hit over .300 with Elmhurst American Legion team this summer

Fenton senior-to-be baseball player Andrew Pietrucha said he’s made quite a bit of progress as a hitter over the last year.

“I got better with my hitting confidence,” he said. “When I go up to the plate now I feel like I should be getting a hit. I feel confident enough now where I can say that. It’s less strikeouts and more hits.”

Pietrucha is fresh off a strong run with the Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team this summer where he hit .333 and was lauded by Muddogs coach Mike Biondo for providing good defense in the outfield. Pietrucha’s primary position is center field.

“Before I would go on cold streaks,” he said about his hitting. “I’m hitting better now. I feel like I am putting the ball in play probably 90 percent of the time.”

Pietrucha, who will enter his fourth season with the Fenton baseball program next spring, got bit by the baseball bug as a young child.

“I started as a young kid and I fell in love with the game,” he said. “I like the team aspect of baseball. That’s pretty cool. It’s not something where one person can win a game for you. It has to go all around the team.”

He’s also a big fan of playing center field. “Center field, you are the captain of the outfield,” he said. “You can take control of the game.

To be a good centerfielder you have to have communication. If there is no communication in the outfield, balls are going to drop and you are going to run into each other. That’s how injuries happen and it could create arguments. If you communicate, none of that happens.”

Pietrucha enjoys watching Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout play. “I like watching a Mike Trout-type player,” he said. “I would say he’s my favorite to look up to. He’s probably the best player in Major League Baseball and he’s not cocky about it at all. He just plays the game.”

Pietrucha said his time with Post 187 this summer was enjoyable.

It was his second year in the program after playing on the U17 Muddogs team last year. “I met a lot of new friends,” he said. “It was very enjoyable.”

Pietrucha said things also are looking up for the Fenton baseball program. “It looks like we are going in the right direction,” said Pietrucha, an honor-roll student at Fenton who enjoys fishing and going to the golf driving range in his spare time. “A lot of people are committed. It’s just more and more practice so we can get more show for all the work we put in every day.”

A goal for Pietrucha is to play the sport in college, where he is thinking about majors such as science and criminal justice.

“I would love to play in college,” he said. “It would be great to keep playing baseball. One of my goals next year is to get noticed by coaches and have communication with college coaches. I’m going to keep working my butt off and practice. I’m going to get my swing even better and my mechanics better. I’m going to keep getting better.”

Elmhurst American Legion U17 baseball team competes in 2nd Division tournament Squad comes up short in 39 run hit-fest

The Elmhurst Post 187 U17 baseball team concluded its season at the American Legion 2nd Division tournament held at the Carol Stream American Legion Post Lee Pfund Stadium.

Elmhurst lost 27-12 to Wheaton Post 76 in the loser’s bracket opener and was eliminated from the tournament.

Wheaton scored 13 runs in the first inning and added 11 more runs in the fifth inning. The game was halted after five innings. All 27 Wheaton runs were earned.

Wheaton pounded out 26 hits in the contest. Elmhurst made things interesting with three runs in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth to cut the lead to 16-12.

Jose Alvarez (Fenton) went 4-for5 with a run scored and three RBI. Jack Ryan (IC Catholic Prep) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Jake Galanis (Leyden) had a run scored and a walk. Jack Klein (Leyden) had a hit and two RBI. Abraham

Elmhurst had 13 hits and walked nine times. Mitchell had a double and a triple. Howard and Klein each stole two bases. Post 187 stole nine bases as a team and left 10 runners on base.

Klein, Andrew Zwolinski (IC Catholic Prep) and Marcos Montoya (Fenton) pitched.

Post 187 opened the division tournament with an 11-4 loss to Morris Post 294. Morris led 4-1 after two innings and then extended its lead with two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Elmhurst had seven hits, but committed four errors.

Alvarez, Nick DeSimone, Galanis, Zwolinski, Montoya, Mitchell and Otero each had a single hit. DeSimone, Zwolinski and Otero each had an RBI. Alvarez and Mitchell each had a triple. Otero stole a base.

Galanis pitched five innings and allowed only two earned runs on three hits and struck out five. Saucedo pitched two innings.
