The Villa Park Youth Baseball Association celebrated its All-Star Weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weekend included Saturday’s World Series championship games in the Farm, Minor and Bronco divisions. The Athletics prevailed in the Minor Division title game. County approves adult business licensing ordinance The DuPage County Board on June 25 voted to approve an ordinance that will establish a licensing program for adult businesses operating in the unincorporated areas.

The Ad-Hoc Adult Business Committee crafted the ordinance after interviewing community leaders and reviewing case law regarding adult businesses. Chairman Dan Cronin established the ad-hoc committee in December 2018 to mitigate the negative

secondary effects adult businesses have on the community.

“I felt this was an issue that deserved the intensive scrutiny and even-handed review that the committee provided,” said Chairman Dan Cronin. “Members heard from the community, weighed the relevant issues and delivered a comprehensive licensing ordinance designed to protect our residents, employees and business owners.”

Applicants will be subject to a background check, as will all employees who work in the establishment.

Facilities must meet minimum standards through the County Building and Zoning Department and will be subject to inspection by the Sheriff’s Office to ensure no illegal activity is occurring inside.

“This ordinance is the result of the tremendous work of the committee and staff,” said Committee Chair-

woman Julie Renehan. “From conducting numerous interviews with local leaders, neighbors, business owners, and social service providers, to reviewing case law and studies, to crafting a narrowly drawn licensing program, we are confident the ordinance will protect our residents.”

The license regulates “on-premise” and “live” entertainment. Employees, including managers, bouncers, dancers, and others, will need to acquire a

separate identification card issued by the County which must be worn by the employee during work hours. No alcohol will be permitted on the premises and live and on-premise entertainment will not be allowed between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m.

Licensing fees will be $200, and employee and entertainer licenses will cost $300 each. Fees will be used to defray the cost of enforcement and processing applications.

Illinois Lottery, Mariano’s announce partnership

The Illinois Lottery and Mariano’s announced last week the availability of Illinois Lottery games at Mariano’s stores across the Chicago area.

“We are proud to launch a new partnership with an important retailer such as Mariano’s. This will enable the Illinois Lottery to expand its reach and connect with more players,” Illinois Lottery Acting Director Harold Mays said. “Retail expansion makes

us more accessible and helps increase our player base. This makes the job of growing the Lottery easier and means more funding for education and special causes in Illinois. With this partnership, Mariano’s shoppers win, but so do the people of Illinois.”

At an event held at a Mariano’s location in Chicago, the company

announced its plan to donate 5% of Illinois Lottery sales, up to $25,000, through July 21 to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.

“Today’s announcement highlights Mariano’s and the Illinois Lottery’s shared commitment to supporting organizations that are important to the communities we serve,” Marx said.

Mariano’s shoppers will see Illinois Lottery vending machines in-

stalled in Mariano’s stores, and have the ability to buy Lottery tickets at the customer service counter.

Additionally, Mariano’s and the Illinois Lottery will team up for instore events and experiences in the coming months to celebrate the new partnership.

Including the 44 Mariano’s locations, the Illinois Lottery has more than 7,200 retailers across Illinois.

Conroy, Costa Howard to host addiction, opioid awareness forum To address the rising opioid epidemic that continues to claim lives and devastate families in DuPage County, state Reps. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, and Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, will hold an Addiction and Opioid Awareness Forum on Monday, July 15 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Willowbrook High School.

“Addiction is a mental illness. For years, it’s been my priority to expand access to

treatment for individuals with a history of drug abuse, and to keep our community safer through programs such as the Statewide Needle and Syringe Exchange program that I passed this year with broad bipartisan support,” said Conroy. “The Addiction and Opioid Awareness Forum will be an opportunity for residents to learn the facts about the opioid epidemic, which is becoming more deadly each year.”

Conroy and Costa Howard will be joined at the forum by the DuPage County State’s Attorney, the DuPage County Sheriff, and medical professionals to discuss initiatives that will address opioid abuse.

“In my work as a guardian ad litem, I have seen firsthand the devastation that opioids can inflict on addicts and their families,” Costa Howard said. “Over the past year, Illinois legislators have taken some important steps by

requiring better reporting of overdoses and by making life-saving medication available to people at high risk for opioid poisoning.

However, we need to do more to make sure that opioid users have access to affordable, effective treatment, and we need to offer support and help to their families. I’m looking forward to hearing from experts and local residents about actions we can take to end this scourge in our communities.”

Lufkin demolition approved Board votes 4-3 to fund dismantling of pool

After nearly two years, and many discussions, the Villa Park Board of Trustees voted on Monday, June 24, to proceed with demolition of Lufkin Pool.

The 65-year-old swimming pool was closed last summer when the board decided not to fund critical maintenance to the liner and other parts of the pool. The pool, located at 1000 S. Ardmore Ave., has not been open since the end of the 2017 season.

The meeting was moved from Village Hall to the Iowa Community Center in anticipation of a large crowd. Previous Lufkin Pool discussions and votes drew 100 or more residents. The June 24 meeting, however, attracted about 40. Nearly 20 members representing the grassroots group now known as “Park Advocates/Save Lufkin Pool” were in attendance. Residents who opposed spending more funds to “bring back” the pool made up most of the other attendees.

Trustee Kevin Patrick was not in the Iowa Community Center, but his fellow board members voted to allow him to participate in the discussion and voting via telephone.

Before the vote on the resolution, 11 residents addressed the board during the Public Comments on Agenda Items portion of the meeting. The first five speakers identified themselves as members of “Save Lufkin Pool” group and asked the Board to delay voting to pick a demolition company. Reasons given included waiting until the current Parks and Recreation feasibility study was completed as well as saving the cost of demolition.

“An outdoor pool is one of the most important amenities to residents, as indicated by the feasibility study/residents survey,” said Steve Seddon of the Park Advocates/Save Lufkin Pool organization.

Seddon also said the $78,000 cost of demolition could be used to help fund infrastructure projects such as sewer separation and construction of sidewalks. Allowing more time for ideas and funding to save Lufkin Pool, as well as questioning the ‘transparency’ of the board’s actions

in moving up the vote to demolish to April instead of June as originally promised were also cited as reasons to keep Lufkin.

The Save Lufkin advocates also held that the non-binding referendum ballot question posed earlier this year was misleading and biased in its wording. The question on the April 2 ballot read: “Do you support the Village of Villa Park, Illinois, spending up to $1,000,000 in new property taxes to fund repairs to Lufkin Pool which would allow the Village to safely reopen the pool?”

The referendum was rejected by voters by a margin of 52.57 percent to 47.43 percent; 1,062 residents voted against the proposition, while 958 voted in favor of it.

Some residents addressed the board to ask that trustees vote to demolish the pool.

“My house is right next to Lufkin Pool,” said Kristina Bostian, “All I ask is for anyone who still wants the pool to come to my yard and just look at it for 20 minutes. It is a cesspool. Please, the pool must be demolished. I have three kids and I worry with that pool…it is filled now after the rain. It is dangerous. There

is no saving it. I know of five other families that live close, who’s kids play with my kids, they all want the pool to be gone.”

The vote was originally scheduled as the last agenda item of the evening, but the Board voted to move it to the first item after the consent agenda. During discussion on the Resolution, Trustee Robert Wagner made a motion to table the item until August, in order to allow for ‘town hall meetings in July so we can hear from residents’ on the issue. Patrick seconded the motion. The roll call vote, however, was 4-3 against tabling until August (Trustee Christine Murphy joined Patrick and Wagner as ‘yes’ votes.)

Patrick said he wanted to table the vote because there was no plan for what to do with the Lufkin property after the pool was gone. Trustee Cheryl Tucker said the 2015 Parks and Recreation Plan called for a nature center, walking paths and green space. But ‘It is a living, breathing plan. We can change it.”

The Kiwanis Club of Villa Park is continuing its tradition of sponsoring free Wednesday night concerts in July. Each of the concerts takes place near the Rugaard Gazebo, which is just west of Ardmore Avenue, along the Illinois Prairie Path. This year’s concert series began with this week’s performance by Willowbrook High School’s marching band.

Each of this year’s concerts begins at 6:30 p.m. The concession stand, which opens at 6 p.m., will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, popcorn, soft drinks and more. Alcohol is prohibited on the Illinois Prairie Path.

The Sting Rays, who play rock and roll hits from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, will perform at the July 10 concert. The St. John’s Praise Team from Lombard’s St. John’s Lutheran Church will perform on July 17. Lake Effect, a band playing a blend of Latin, funk, jazz and rhythm and blues, will play in the July 24 concert.

Villa Park’s summer of free live music entertainment will continue with the Thursday concerts at Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, located at 318 E. Kenilworth Ave. Each concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. The concession stand will open at 6 p.m.

Los Tequileros, which plays hits of the 1950s and 1960s, will headline the concert on Aug. 1. Bopology, which plays authentic swing and jazz, will perform on Aug. 8. The Aug. 15 concert features The Wayouts, who play rock from the 1960s. Howard and the White Boys, a blues band, provide the entertainment at the Aug. 22 concert. Mason Rivers, a country band featuring male and female vocalists, will perform on Aug. 29.

Second of two men sentenced in armed robbery of Wheaton College student DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Abeet Ramos, 21, formerly of South Elgin, has been sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections following a guilty plea to one count of Armed Robbery, a Class X Felony, of a Wheaton College student in the summer of 2016. Ramos’ plea of guilty included an agreement that Ramos would cooperate with the State in the case against his codefendant. On

March 29, 2019, Ramos entered his plea of guilty in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down today’s sentence. On January 25, 2019, Ramos’ co-defendant, Jeremy Jones, 26, formerly of Elgin, was sentenced to 24 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to the same charge. A third co-defendant, Timothy Jones, Jeremy’s brother, was shot and killed in December 2017 in an unrelated matter.

Ramos has been held in custody at

the DuPage County Jail on a bond of $3 million with 10% to apply since September 2, 2016.

On August 26, 2016, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the victim was walking in downtown Glen Ellyn when he was approached by a small SUV occupied by three men. Two men exited the vehicle, displayed a handgun, and ordered the victim into the vehicle. The three men then drove to several ATMs and withdrew more than $1,500 from the victim’s bank

Stronger texting while driving law now in effect Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s legislative initiative strengthening the law on texting while driving took effect July 1. The law cracks down on texting while driving by classifying first-time offenses as moving violations. Under the previous law, second and subsequent texting while

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is alerting the public of motor vehicle title fee changes that took place July 1, due to action by the Illinois General Assembly.

These fee changes were a part of a capital bill that was recently signed into law and will fund statewide transportation and road improvement projects. The Secretary of State’s Office collects the fees set by the legislature.

Elected officials, community activists celebrate Matt Haller Act becoming law Last week, Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) and Senator John F. Curran (R-Western Springs), along with several community officials and activists, celebrated the Matt Haller Act becoming law in Illinois.

This new law will enact the strictest restrictions on ethylene oxide emissions and facilities that use the chemical in production in the nation.

“Protecting Illinois residents from the threat of ethylene oxide was a bipartisan effort and I would like to thank everyone, including Governor Pritzker and his staff, who worked on this legislation that ensures proper pro-

tections are in place when it comes to this dangerous chemical,” Durkin said.

“The tragic situation which unfolded in Willowbrook at the Sterigenics facility should have never happened. This law will help make sure that it never will again.”

Senate Bill 1852, known as the Matt Haller Act, will prohibit the renewal of any permits for facilities that violate federal or state standards for ethylene oxide emissions. The legislation will also prohibit new ethylene oxide medical sterilization facilities from opening within 10 miles of a school or park in counties with more than 50,000 residents and 15 miles in counties with less than 50,000 residents. Further-

more, it prohibits the use of ethylene oxide by any facility that has had egregious violations requiring a seal order.

“This legislation would not be possible without the grassroots support of the people in our communities surrounding Sterigenics. Their advocacy ensured this new law will be effective at protecting residents against EtO emissions and makes Illinois’ regulations the most comprehensive in the nation,” said Rep. Deanne Mazzochi, Chief Co-sponsor of the bill. “I want to recognize Leader Durkin, Senator Curran, the Governor’s Office, and all the community members, like Matt Haller, who helped build support for this legislation. This law gets it right, and I hope

the people who live and work in the surrounding communities finally have peace of mind.”

Another component of the legislation is to require a public notice and notice to schools, hospitals and local government officials in the event of any elevated EtO emissions levels as well as annual ambient air testing at all EtO emitting facilities.

“This new law creates the strongest ethylene oxide sterilization regulations in the nation,” said State Senator John Curran. “I want to thank Leader Durkin for his work in addressing the public health crisis in Willowbrook.”

Matt Haller, a 45-year-old Willowbrook resident, passed away earlier this

year from stage four stomach cancer after having lived about a mile from the Sterigenics plant with his family.

He was an outspoken proponent for closing the facility.

“From the moment we found out in August about this health scare, we engaged federal, state and local officials and agencies to help us through our crisis,” said Willowbrook Mayor Frank Trilla.

“We cannot erase the past, but we can protect the future. There are not enough words to describe how happy our Village and surrounding communities are for this legislation.”

Governor Pritzker signed SB 1852 on June 21, 2019.

Fourth of July celebrations have evolved in Illinois Past celebrations were more formal

By Tom Emery Today in Illinois, the Fourth of July is a holiday for boating, barbecues and fireworks. In the state’s earliest days, the celebrations were more organized and formal—though the fireworks were a constant.

The first Fourth of July celebrations after Illinois was granted statehood in 1818, as elsewhere, often were loosely scripted. First on everyone’s minds was reverence for the Revolution, which had tak-

en place less than 50 years earlier.

Dr. Samuel Wheeler, state historian of Illinois and director of research and collections at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, says, “Americans of the 1820s and 1830s were closer to the Revolution than we are to World War II. They understood how significant the Revolution was, and held the men and the leaders of that time in very high esteem.”

A typical Fourth of July in the era began with the boom of a cannon or the crackling of gunfire, followed by a parade of the leaders of the town, including tradesmen, business

owners and militia members, with musical accompaniment. Then the Declaration of Independence was normally read aloud before an array of patriotic speeches was delivered.

“Celebrations of the Fourth of July usually followed an agenda,” said Wheeler. “There was a kind of order on how things were to be done.”

Afterward, the men of the town gathered at a local tavern or hotel for dinner, complete with 13 formal toasts—one for each of the original colonies. The number 13 was a recurring theme in many July Fourth celebrations nationwide, and some towns featured the firing of 13 guns

or cannons as part of the festivities.

“Today, the number 13 is considered unlucky,” Wheeler said. “But in that era, everyone knew what 13 meant. That honored the colonies that had banded together and created this audacious new experiment in popular government.”

The toasts, too, followed a script. One was for the heroes of the Revolution; another was for the sitting president; and a third was for George Washington. Even the number of cheers after each toast was planned ahead of time. The last of the 13 toasts usually was dedicated to women, who were rarely present at the dinner.

“Women in the 19th century weren’t going to be a part of that,” said Wheeler. “Men and women lived in separate spheres in that era. But the women usually celebrated July Fourth in their own way.” In one instance in the early 1840s, about 400

women in Springfield held their own outdoor celebration to mark the day.

Fireworks, though, were a mainstay of Independence Day celebrations.

“Fireworks or some sort of aerial display were always a feature,” Wheeler said. “That really hasn’t changed much in the decades since.”

Revolutionary veterans were cherished members of early 19th century society in Illinois and elsewhere, especially on July Fourth.

“Now, our Greatest Generation includes the veterans of World War II, but in that era, it was the Revolutionary veterans,” Wheeler said. “People of that time certainly appreciated what those men had done to ensure a new form of government that we continue to enjoy today.”

Pritzker signs ‘most equity-centric’ marijuana legalization bill in nation Possession, adult-use to become legal Jan. 1

Recreational marijuana use and possession will be legal in Illinois beginning Jan. 1, 2020, after Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker June 25 in Chicago signed a bill supporters said is the “most equity-centric” legalization effort in the nation.

“This legislation lives true to the promise to bring justice, equity and opportunity throughout our state,” Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton said. “By including components focused on repairing the harm caused by the failed war on drugs and decades of policies that caused mass incarceration—Illinois is a national leader with policy that’s a national model.”

The legalization effort made Illinois the 11th state in the U.S. to legalize marijuana but the first to pass a comprehensive legalization package through the legislature rather than a ballot initiative.

“As the first state in the nation to fully legalize adult-use cannabis through the legislative process, Illinois exemplifies the best of democracy: a bipartisan and deep commitment to better the lives of all of our people,” Pritzker said during a signing ceremony at the Sankofa Cultur-

al Arts and Business Center. “Legalizing adult-use cannabis brings an important and overdue change to our state, and it’s the right thing to do.”

Beginning January 1, the law will allow for the possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana per Illinois resident over the age of 21. Residents will also be able to possess up to five grams of cannabis concentrate and 500 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol—or THC – contained in a cannabis-infused product.

Non-residents can possess half those amounts.

Registered medical marijuana patients will be allowed to grow up to five cannabis plants in their home and possess more than 30 grams of marijuana if it is grown and secured in their residence.

The new law also includes expungement measures for those with low-level marijuana arrests and convictions.

Roughly 700,000 records are eligible for expungement under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, Pritzker said.

“One of the things that we wanted to make sure we accomplished with legalization was ensuring we put social equity at the center and the heart of our efforts, acknowledging that while we normalize and legalize something that is happening across

the country, that we tie the direct nexus to the communities that the prohibition has hurt the most,” said state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields.

Pritzker said those with arrests for less than 30 grams will have their records cleared through local law enforcement and the Illinois State Police, and those with convictions up to that amount will have their records referred to the Prisoner Review Board, which will make an expungement recommendation to the governor.

Those convicted of possessing between 30 and 500 grams could petition the courts for expungement through a more complex “motion to vacate” process.

Marijuana offenses connected to violent crime are ineligible for the automatic expungement processes, but the individual or state’s attorney can still file a motion with the court to vacate conviction.

“This legislation recognizes that to move forward and create a new cannabis industry, we have to mend the historic inequalities that have torn communities apart,” said Esther Franco-Payne, executive director of Cabrini Green Legal Aid. “Expunging the records of hundreds of thousands of people and making social equity at the center of this bill will

change lives and revitalize communities.”

The measure directs 25 percent of legalization revenues to a newly established Restore, Reinvest and Renew grant program to “help communities most disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs,” Pritzker said.

The bill also creates a $30 million low-interest loan program to defray the start-up costs associated with entering the licensed cannabis industry and establishes a “social equity applicant” status for licensing aimed at generating more minority participation in the legalized industry.

The new law also establishes a DUI Cannabis Task Force; regulates advertising, packaging and location of cannabis businesses near public spaces, including schools and parks; and allows local governments to regulate the location of a cannabis business and home grow.

Legalization will generate revenue through a 7 percent tax on the gross receipts from the sale of marijuana by a cultivator and an excise tax on the purchaser. Marijuana with a THC level at or below 35 percent would pay a 10 percent tax; while products over that amount of THC would be taxed at 25 percent. A 20 percent tax would apply to marijuana-infused products.

The tax does not apply for marijuana purchased by licensed medicinal patients.

The Illinois Department of Revenue projects that this industry will generate more than $57 million in tax revenue and licensing fees in fiscal year 2020. In tax revenue alone, legalization is expected to generate $140.5 million in fiscal year 2021; $253.5 million in FY22; $323.5 million in FY23; and $375.5 million in FY24.

Legalization is expected to generate as much as $500 million each year when the industry is fully mature. For the first year, most of the revenue is expected to come from licensing fees for marijuana cultivators, processors, transporters and sellers.

After regulatory expenses are accounted for, the bill dedicates 35 percent of legalization revenues to the general revenue fund; 20 percent to address substance abuse, prevention and mental health concerns; 10 percent to pay down the bill backlog; 8 percent to local governments to support crime prevention programs and interdiction efforts relating to the illegal cannabis market and driving under the influence of cannabis; and 2 percent for a public education campaign and analysis of the public health impacts of legalization.

and local governments will maintain control as to whether the industry can conduct business within their jurisdictions.

Municipalities can also enact zoning restrictions pertaining to licensed cultivation centers, craft growers, processing organizations and dispensaries.

Despite local control, the law requires at least 1,500 feet between each retail dispensary.

Colleges and universities may continue to prohibit marijuana use on campus in accordance with federal regulations, and any business may prohibit use on private property.

Only licensed medicinal patients will be able to grow up to five cannabis plants in their own homes, unless the property is rented, in which case they would need written consent from the property owner.

The new law also allows employers to continue to maintain drugfree workplaces and zero-tolerance drug-use policies provided they are non-discriminatory. Employers will also maintain the right to discipline or fire an employee for violating workplace drug policies.

Addison Trail graduate Little takes over Blazers’ girls basketball program Previously coached in boys and girls programs

Addison Trail didn’t have to look very far at all for its new girls basketball coach.

Cory Little, an Addison Trail graduate and a longtime coach in both the girls and boys programs, is the Blazers’ new head girls basketball coach, taking over for longtime coach Rob Schader, who stepped down after a strong 13-year run in the program.

Little coached in the girls program for eight years and the last three in the boys program. He was a varsity assistant boys coach for a year and boys sophomore head coach for two years.

“I have always wanted to be a head coach,” Little told the Independent.

“I wanted to have my own philosophy and my own program. I worked with Rob (Schader) and Brendan (Addison Trail boys head coach Lyons) and watched them establish and run their programs. I wanted the same opportunity for myself.”

Little counts Schader, Lyons and current Hinsdale Central boys coach and former Driscoll boys head coach Nick Latorre as key influencers and

mentors in his coaching career. “I look up to Nick as a head coach,” said Little. “I watched him prepare and develop kids. It opened up my eyes. I also watched Rob develop a lot of kids and during that time had the opportunity to coach my sister there. Brendan Lyons is a breakdown guy who can take things from ground-zero to 100 miles an hour.

Both Rob and Brendan get the best out of the kids who go to Addison Trail. I watched them break down film and get the absolute best out of those kids.”

Little played at Addison Trail and then at UIC under coach Jimmy Collins before embarking on a professional career overseas. He graduated from Addison Trail in 1997.

“I want to give back to these girls and give them the same opportunities that were given to me by my coaches,” he said. “I want to build a team and a team environment. I want them to have the same love playing for me as I had playing for my coaches.”

As far as Little’s coaching philosophy? “What they can expect from me is a dedicated coach who will work hard for the girls,” he said. “I will push the girls to be their best and there will be a leader and not just a vocal one. I’ll be out there showing

them how to do things. If I can’t do it, I don’t expect them to do it. When parents walk in the gym and see their child playing for me they will see the love, trust, understanding and values I have for these girls. They will be taught life lessons. This will be a community program. I want to see the love and the smiles when they are playing and not going out there and worrying about producing. This isn’t just Addison Trail’s program, this is the community’s program. I want this to be one big family that is going to grow and develop.”

Little noted Addison Trail moved all its summer games to the high school, following a similar path like the boys program does. The Blazers previously played in the Palatine summer league.

“We have changed some things up,” said Little. “They are learning some new things. I’m a big stickler on development and I felt the girls needed more skill development and to learn how the program is going to be run before we go all-out in games.”

York Township honors Villa Park resident, World War II veteran Villa Park resident Peter Kurasz recently visited York Township Hall to see the “Remember When” display in his honor commemorating his service in the United States Navy during World War II and again for the Korean War. Peter Kurasz joined the United States Navy in June of 1943, 10 days before his 21st birthday. He served as a MM3c, Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class, in the engine room on the converted light cruiser ship USS Langley (CVL27) overseas in the Pacific during World War II. Peter was honorably discharged in November of 1945 after the war was won. He came home to his lovely wife

Marian and went on to have 2 children before being called back into the Navy in 1950.

In 1950, he served on the battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62) for seven months during the Korean War, and was again honorably discharged from the Navy to come home to his wife who was carrying their third child.

After his brave and honorable service, Peter worked for Sargent & Lundy Engineers, building power plants for 30 years before he retired. Shortly after Peter turned 80 and after many years in retirement, he began working at Courts Plus in Elmhurst. He continued to work for another 15 years and now he still goes about twice a week

to do his workouts.

He was married for 53 years and has 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 greatgreat-grandchild.

Peter received the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 9 Service Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 Service Stars, and a World War II Victory Medal.

York Township Supervisor John W. Valle said, “York Township is proud of Peter Kurasz, and we just wanted to express our gratitude for his service to our country by honoring him in our ‘Remember When’ display at Township Hall.”

“I’m super-excited to embark on this journey,” said Little. “The program excitement is there. They want to go out there and play. Next year we may do something even more different and embark on a month-long shootout on Tuesdays and Thursdays just like the boys do. The more we play the better we’re going to get. This summer, we focused more on skills development and getting them more comfortable and then actually getting out there and physically seeing it themselves. They did that by getting in the gym and doing drill, drill, drill and work, work, work.

They want to get to the gym early and they want to stay after and get more shots in. I felt a sense of urgency and development came out of this camp. They want to put in more work.”

Little also is excited about his

coaching staff that includes Leane Williams (AT graduate and a former WNBA player), Kendrick Thomas (AT grad), Ryan Dini (last year’s sophomore coach) and Jenn Schulmeister (former Addison Trail girls basketball player). “We have a great staff in place that will be there to support and develop the players,” he said. “Leane’s basketball mind is unbelievable and her basketball pedigree speaks for itself.”

Little was pleased with what he saw from the likes of varsity veterans Demi Koulogeorgas, Quiana Birmingham, Mia Johnson and Ally Severino. “Demi’s whole mindset with the game has totally changed,” said Little. “Quiana, we call her ‘Q’ was on the varsity as a freshman last year. Ally was a sophomore on coach Ryan Dini’s team and is going to be one of our best inside-outside threats, and Mia’s whole game has adjusted. She’s running the floor and is going to be a threat. Those four, in particular,

have mastered the concept of extra work pays off, and they have taken things to the next level. The girls want more reps. They want to develop and get better. It’s not just the varsity girls. The sophomores have caught some eyes. They want to do it. The whole program believes in what we are doing and they are having fun developing. They are grasping what I want in the program. They are leading and guiding and taking it to another level.

If they can adapt to that, it’s going to carry over to October where they believe they can knock down shots.

“We didn’t preach wins and losses this summer. I told them not to worry about missing shots. Worry about locking things down on defense. If you miss a shot, shoot it again. That’s how they are going to get confidence. This is all exciting for them. There is excitement throughout the program. I think we can do some great things coming up.”

Abraham Otero had a hit and a run scored. Kyle Mitchell had two hits and scored a run. Jack Klein walked twice. Perez doubled, while Sanchez, Perez and Hilgart each stole two bases.

Flores Jr. was the winning pitcher. He struck out three and allowed only one earned run in 3 1/3 innings of work. Saucedo pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and struck out two to record the save.

Elmhurst also lost a 13-1 game to the Schaumburg Seminoles National team in Bourbonnais. Perez had the team’s only hit. DeSimone, Zwolinski and Flores Jr. each walked once. Sanchez took the loss. Jack Ryan pitched an inning and struck out two.

In earlier action, Post 187 lost 11-2 to Wheaton Post 76 at Redmond Park in Bensenville. Elmhurst was limited to five hits.

Flores Jr. had two hits, scored two runs and walked once. Jake Galanis had a hit and an RBI. Mitchell had a hit. DeSimone walked once.

Otero had a hit. Galanis’ hit was a double. Flores Jr. stole two bases.

Galanis took the loss on the mound.

Post 187 was 3-7-1 overall through late last week. Elmhurst returns to action at the Wheaton Legion Classic July 12 at Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream.

Marshall had a hit, as did Corbin, who also scored a run and had two RBI. Matthew Maziarka, Damian Pacheco and Ayala (1 run scored) each walked. Corbin and Sanchez each had a double and Marshall stole a base. Maziarka took the loss.

Mariners move to 5-2 after defeating Glendale Heights Villa Park finishes its regular season with a pair of meets next week

The Villa Park Mariners improved their DuPage Swim and Dive Conference record to 5-2 with a 392-241 victory over the Glendale Heights Dolphins on Saturday at Jefferson Pool. The Mariners delivered firstplace swims in 34 of the meet’s 58 individual events, and in 17 of 20 relay races.

Villa Park’s Alexander Dean won three individual events in the 13-14 boys division. He posted victories in the 100-meter individual medley, the 50-meter butterfly and the 50-meter breaststroke. He also swam on a pair of winning relay teams. Connor McGinnis, Jimmy Burns and Hudson De La Rosa joined him on both relays.

Cara Burns also provided the Mariners with three individual victories during Saturday’s meet. Competing in the 15-18 girls level, she won the

100-meter individual medley, the 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter breaststroke. She also teamed with DeAnna Tate, Kelsey Fitzgerald and Kylie Moses to win two relay events.

Villa Park’s two-time individual champions in Saturday’s meet included Naomi Aldana (9-10 girls), Ian Mueller (9-10 boys), Bennett Vea (9-10 boys), Lauren Barager (11-12 girls), Benjamin Dean (11-12 boys), Jimmy Burns (13-14 boys), Cole McGinnis (15-18 boys) and Jack Burns (15-18 boys).

The 8-and-under girls relay foursome of Lydia Aldana, Brooke Turner, Phoebe Aldana and Colleen Pienkos won a pair of races—the 100-meter medley relay and the 100-meter freestyle relay. The trio of Ella Yates, Olivia Daly and Naomi Aldana teamed with Daphne Moser to win the 200-meter medley relay in the 9-10 girls division. The three girls joined Francesca Monteleone to with the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Ben Evenson, Ian Mueller and Bennett Vea swam on both of Villa Park’s winning relay teams in the

9-10 boys level. Nolan Raczkowski teamed with the three boys on the 200-meter medley team, while Finnley Morgan swam on the 200-meter freestyle team.

The 11-12 girls foursome of Lauren Barager, Izzie Evenson, Maisie Thompson and Audrey Morgan won a pair of relay events. The 11-12 boys team of Jake Koterba, Benjamin Dean, Matthew Fitzgerald and Jack Brisbois also won two relay races.

Villa Park’s 15-18 boys team of Cole McGinnis, Aidan Nichols, Spencer Benedict and Jack Burns won two relay races. The 13-14 girls foursome of Annabelle Thompson, Grace Roscoe, Mia Nichols and Mary Turner provided a win in the 200-meter medley relay.

The Mariners will not compete in any meets this week. None of the conference teams competed on July 3 because of the Independence Day holiday. Villa Park has a bye on July 6. The Mariners will close out their regular season with a July 10 meet at Carol Stream, followed by a July 13 home meet against Roselle.

The Post 187 Muddogs recorded wins against the Indiana-based Post 369 Expos and Indiana-based Highland Post 180 and dropped a close decision to Elgin Post 57.

In an 11-1 win over the Post 369 Expos, Elmhurst exploded for five runs in both the second and third innings to put the contest away at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

Post 187 had six hits and took advantage of five Expos errors.

Ian Steinorth had a hit, an RBI and a walk. Ryan Malek had an RBI. Tim Bowbin had two RBI and a run scored. Jack Enright had two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. AJ Parnell had a hit, an RBI and two walks. Tim Beecroft walked. Connor Gwaltney had two hits, scored two runs, drove in one and walked. Ken Siepicka had a run scored and a walk.

Andrew Pietrucha had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Adam Parat had a hit. Gwaltney, Pietrucha and Parat each doubled.

Miles King was the winner for Elmhurst. He threw three innings and struck out seven while allowing only one hit. Beecroft pitched the final two innings and struck out three.

Post 187 then lost 12-10 to Elgin Post 57 at Plunkett. Elmhurst led 4-3 after three innings, but Elgin scored four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Elmhurst had 13 hits, but made five errors in the field. Steinorth had a

hit and a run scored. Parnell had a run scored and a walk. Malek was 2-for2 with two runs scored. Enright had two hits and scored two runs. Gwaltney had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Beecroft had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Jimmy O’Donnell had a hit, two RBI and walked twice. Dave Sykora had two hits and two runs scored. Pietrucha had a hit and a run scored. Parat had a hit and an RBI. Pietrucha and O’Donnell each doubled.

Parnell took the loss. Beecroft and Malek also pitched in the contest.

Elmhurst then defeated Highland, Indiana Post 180 by a count of 6-4 in eight innings in a game played in Highland, Indiana.

The Muddogs trailed 4-0 after four innings, but plated four in the top of the fourth and won the game with two runs in the extra session.

Elmhurst had nine hits with Steinorth accounting for two of those.

Malek had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Enright had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Parnell had a hit and a walk. O’Donnell scored a run and walked. Siepicka had two hits and scored twice. Parat had two hits and two RBI. Enright and Siepicka each doubled. Gwaltney had two of Elmhurst’s five stolen bases.

Steinorth was the winner in relief.

He pitched two innings and struck out four. Siepicka pitched five innings and allowed one earned run and struck out four. Enright pitched an inning and fanned two.

Post 187 moved to 5-5 on the season and was scheduled to play the Chicago Pirates and Highland Post 180 earlier this week at Plunkett before heading north Friday to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to play Lake Geneva Post 24 at Badger High School.

IHSA releases 2019 football schedules Warriors kick off their season with an Aug. 30 home game against Providence Catholic

The IHSA released the 2019 football schedules last week. Willowbrook, which has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, will open the upcoming campaign with an Aug. 30 non-conference home game against Providence Catholic. The Warriors will play their second game of the season at Oak Park/River Forest on Sept. 6. Willowbrook did not face Providence Catholic or Oak Park/River Forest last season.

The Warriors will play all nine of their regular season games on Friday nights. Each game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Willowbrook, which has not lost a West Suburban Gold Conference game since 2016, will open the 2019 conference season with a Sept. 13 home game against Downers Grove South. The Warriors’ conference sea-

son will continue with a Sept. 20 game at Leyden, followed by a Sept. 27 conference home battle against District 88 rival Addison Trail.

Willowbrook will play a conference game at Hinsdale South on Oct. 4. The Warriors will return home to play York of the West Suburban Silver Conference on Oct. 11. Willowbrook will play a conference game at Morton on Oct. 18. The Warriors will wrap up the regular season with an Oct. 25 home game against Proviso East.

The Warriors posted perfect 6-0 conference records to win undisputed West Suburban Gold titles in both 2017 and 2018. Willowbrook produced an unblemished 9-0 regular season record in 2018. The Warriors then won two home playoff games to advance to the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals. Willowbrook played a memorable game at Batavia in the quarterfinal round.

The Warriors rallied from behind to take the lead late in the fourth quarter.

Batavia tied the game in the closing seconds of regulation and went on to beat the Warriors 34-27 in overtime.

Batavia then lost to Nazareth Academy—the eventual Class 7A state champion—in the semifinals.
