Lufkin Pool demolition begins

The demolition of Lufkin Pool began last week. Fowler Services of Elgin started the demolition on Monday, July 15. The drone photo, taken that day by Villa Park Trustee Kevin Patrick, shows the main pool building in the foreground. The entire main building, which is located at 1000 S. Ardmore Ave., had been demolished by the end of last week. The other photo, from July 19, shows the pool in the background. The demolition project is continuing this week. The Villa Park Village Board voted 4-3 during its June 24 meeting to authorize a $78,000 contract with Fowler Services to demolish the pool and related structures. Trustees David Cilella, Nick Cuzzone and Cheryl Tucker joined Villa Park Village President Albert Bulthuis in voting to authorize the contract to demolish the pool. Patrick joined Trustee Christine Murphy and Trustee Robert Wagner in voting against the proposal. The demolition contract also calls for the re-grading and restoration of the property to green space. Fowler Services will remove the pool, fill the area with soil, re-grade and seed the ground. Lufkin Pool, which was built in the mid 1950s, had been closed since the end of the 2017 season.

Meet Elmhurst’s Twitter sensation Ricky Cobb’s ‘Super 70s Sports’ account brings yesteryear’s sports and pop culture references back to life in a most colorful way

If you are a Generation Xer, at one point in your life you’ve likely rode a Big Wheel, carried a metal lunchbox emblazoned with some 1970s or 1980s television program or sports entity on it and watched shows such as “Kojak,” “Quincy,” “The Brady Bunch” and “The A-Team.”

For Elmhurst resident Ricky Cobb, it’s all of the above and then some.

And Cobb is using the power of social media and his, shall we say, colorful sense of humor to bring these classics back to life.

Cobb is the owner of the wildly popular Super 70s Sports Twitter account (@ Super70Sports) and the Super 70s Sports Podcast (iTunes and Super70sSports.com). His Twitter account now has some 275,000 followers and is regularly panned on the social media platform as a must follow. The account is followed by some heavyweights in the professional sports and entertainment industries.

Cobb, a veteran sociology teacher at Moraine Valley Community College in south-suburban Palos Hills, started the account around 2015. “It was pretty much something I thought I would do for fun and for my own amusement,” said Cobb, assistant professor, sociology and vice president, faculty association at Moraine.

“I’m a fan of Dan Epstein, who wrote the book ‘Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A funky ride through baseball and American in the Swinging ‘70s,’ that kind of looks at the excesses of baseball at the time with the hairstyles, the uniforms and the smoking and drinking. He had a Facebook page dedicated to the book and he would post baseball cards there (Cobb’s

account is loaded with 70s and 80s baseball card references). I commented on them a few times. It was fun and I thought maybe I would try something. That’s the genesis of it, make jokes about sports and nostalgia and go from there, and maybe a few people would enjoy it.

“I certainly never thought it would be anything of the width it’s turned into now.”

A recent post the 47-year-old Cobb made about children being thrown off metal park merry-go-rounds at high speeds back in the day had more than 10,500 likes.

Another one playing off a recent incident where an adult male swooped in and took a baseball from a child that had been hit in the stands had more than 2,300 likes (Cobb sided with the adult male in the post).

Yet another post pining for a return to the days when ESPN provided only games, scores and highlights and MTV played actual music videos had 6,300 likes.

An earlier Tweet, and one of Cobb’s all-time favorites, about sportscaster Howard Cosell, Bruce Jenner and OJ Simpson had more than 110,000 likes and more than 52,000 retweets and was referenced on Howard Stern’s radio show during an interview with television personality Jimmy Kimmel.

“It’s been silly,” said Cobb, a Kentucky native, who graduated from Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. “It’s a little bit crazy to me. I am very aware how fortunate I am to have this sort of improbable platform that I’ve been lucky enough to find myself in.”

The Task Force is charged with examining the root causes of high property taxes in communities across the state; assessing other states’ legislative solutions to reduce property tax burdens in both the short- and longterm; and proposing policy changes that will bring real relief to Illinois homeowners.

The Task Force is required to submit a report to the Governor and the General Assembly with both short and long-term solutions that can take an administrative, electoral or legislative approach. The initial report will be produced within 90 days, and a final report will be due by December 31, 2019.

“I grew up in Kentucky and that’s pretty far apart culturally from say Chicago, but still if you were a certain age and liked sports, you instantly are able to speak the same language about things such as lunch boxes, toys, movies, restaurants— all those things we experienced as American kids during that time period,” he explained. “It’s stuff that you don’t talk about too much anymore, except maybe when you’re with your buddies and you are shooting the (breeze). You’re instant friends because you speak the same language.”

And while on the subject of language, Cobb’s account is known for its unabashed and frequent use of profanity (Cobb has his go-to swear words, some longer in letter length than others) when bringing back to life these 70s and 80s cultural classics.

“Yeah, that’s me in real life, no doubt about it,” he admitted. “That’s who I am and that’s how I speak. Like anything, yes, it’s entertainment, but if my personality is an eight, the account is me turning the knob to the right a little more. It’s absolutely me, but cranked up all the way. I’m definitely a curser, much to the chagrin of my southern Baptist mother, who doesn’t like using curse words. It’s like oxygen. Certain words need to be sprinkled in there to communicate effectively.”

DuPage County seeks input on spending with annual budget survey DuPage County residents can share important feedback by completing the county’s annual budget survey, which is available online.

Woodridge man charged in kennel fire that claimed lives of 29 dogs DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick announced on Thursday, July 11, that a Woodridge man was facing more than two dozen misdemeanor charges stemming from a fire at a Carol Stream kennel he operated that claimed the lives of 29 dogs.

On Wednesday, June 10, a $50,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant was issued for Garrett Mercado, 29.

Garrett operated the former D and D Kennel located at 2N441 North County Farm Road. He has been charged with 14 counts of Animal Cruelty, a Class A Misdemeanor and 14 counts of Violation of Owner’s Duties, a Class B Misdemeanor. Garret was taken into custody Thursday evening. On Friday morning, he posted the necessary 10% or $5,000 and was released from custody.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Report, on January 14, 2019, at approximately 5:20 a.m., a DuPage County Sheriff Deputy observed the kennel on fire. An investigation into the fire conducted by the DuPage County Fire Investigative Task Force

found the cause of the fire to be undetermined.

Following an investigation that revealed that 29 dogs died in the blaze, it is alleged that numerous other dogs were mistreated suffering puncture wounds, lacerations, abrasions, weight loss, muscle wasting and dehydration.

It is also alleged that there was a foul odor throughout the facility and that urine stains, fresh and old feces and empty water bowls were found in the kennel.

It is further alleged that the kennel runs were not sanitary and that dogs were kept in cages stacked on top of one another. It is alleged that dogs were placed in cages or crates too small for them, dogs were inappropriately tethered and that one dog was tethered to a bar in a bathtub in a fashion that would restrict or prevent movement. It is further alleged that Garrett abandoned the dogs at which time a fire erupted resulting in the dogs’ deaths.

Forum targets opioid addiction in DuPage County Multi-faceted approach needed, panel says

Sales and use of heroin and other opioids are rising in DuPage County, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, who spoke at the Addiction and Opioid Awareness Forum presented by Reps. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park, 46th District) and Terra Costa Howard (D-Glen Ellyn, 48th District) on Monday, July 15, at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

In 2004, “I could have counted the number of heroin cases,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin told the audience, referring to Class 4 felony possession cases, adding that by 2013 there were 57 cases, and by 2019, that number had grown to 182 cases.

The state’s attorney also said that in 2018 alone, there were 98 recorded opioid overdose deaths, with some 65 percent of those involving fentanyl—or fentanyl/heroin combinations—which according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is a synthetic opioid that is 80100 times stronger than morphine.* The forum was meant to bring attention to a crisis affecting the county, highlight the basics of addiction and provide information on treatment, as well as discuss how law enforcement plays a part in both providing treatment options and prosecution for possession and distribution of opioid substances.

Conroy opened by saying that opioid use is something “that affects all of our lives,” and that the forum was created “to talk about the things we’re not talking about.”

Conroy heads the Mental Health and Addiction Committee for the state, of which Costa Howard is a member.

Her high-school-age interns first made a short presentation in the form of a skit on the dangers and misconceptions of “vaping,” and Conroy noted proudly that they did all the research themselves.

Costa Howard said she considered it “an honor and a privilege for me to be here this evening,” adding that the issue is “very personal to me.”

She shared how two older family members have addictions, and “As a young child I was faced with this every day.”

“It touches all of us,” she added.

“Tonight I am here to listen.”

Costa Howard emphasized that an important part of the solution is to “erase the stigma associated with mental health issues,” which the panel agreed are often lying underneath the surface of addiction.

Dr. Richard Phillips, with AMITA Health Illinois Emergency Medicine Specialists and medical director of the emergency department at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center GlenOaks, said he sees at least one or two opioid overdoses every week, and that no race, gender or socioeconomic status is immune.

He told the story of a 20-year-old

who had overdosed several times, was revived, brought to the hospital and treated, but on the third trip to the hospital, ended up being declared brain dead and died.

“This is a progressive disease,” Phillips continued. “We often lose them.”

“It knows no boundaries,” the doctor added.

Dan Lustig, Psy.D., president and CEO of Haymarket Center in Chicago, said he has seen “a 35-year fight of trying to erase the stigma” of addiction, and posed, “Why are people doing this?”

Because, he continued, “Addiction is a brain disease.”

Pleasurable situations release dopamine, Lustig explained, and the reaction is, “I liked doing this and I need to do it [again].”

Opioids create “a rush of dopamine that does not happen naturally,” he added.

“Addiction lies [in] the lowest part of the brain...the hardest area to change,” Lustig explained.

He reiterated that addiction does not discriminate and mentioned, “I actually had a Harvard graduate sitting in my office. I never thought I would see that.”

He also noted that the longer one uses drugs, the more often the individual will cycle in and out of treatment.

He said he sees lifestyle changes in the individual, a downward spiral, and “If you don’t have a comprehensive plan of treatment, clients will continue to cycle.”

These individuals likely end up becoming violent or committing crimes to get money to support their addiction, and end up in the criminal justice system, the psychologist added.

“We have a broken mental health system,” Lustig believes.

DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick said the forum—by including legislators, medical experts and law enforcement—is “a great way to start working together” to combat the opioid crisis, so the county can “pool our resources for a greater chance for success.”

He said the sheriff’s office is also doing its part, such as talking to students in schools and training school resource officers in such areas as crisis intervention, de-escalation and recognizing signs of drug use.

The sheriff said there is also a focus on abuse of prescription pharmaceuticals: “We want to get as many drugs off the ‘playing field’ as possible.”

Prescription drug drop-off sites and special biodegradable pouches for packaging drugs for destruction are among the efforts being made by the department, and he said a syringe collection yielded 423 pounds.

The sheriff’s department has been trained in the use of Narcan (generic name naloxone) to counteract opioid overdoses, Mendrick continued, and he knows of 30 confirmed “saves” since 2014.

Mendrick said his department is working with the health department, and also is using a post-crisis response team to meet with families a few days after an overdose, to offer resources and alternatives.

“That program has hit the ceiling so fast,” he added.

The sheriff’s office is developing an app for drug education, employing narcotics canines, providing crisis intervention and de-escalation training and has doubled up on the

operating budget for jail rehabilitation management.

“We have to start thinking of broader, bigger things that we haven’t done before,” Mendrick summed up.

Berlin said his office is not just about prosecution but “trying to educate the public about what’s going on.”

He said that in the 1960s, for instance, heroin was 4 percent pure, but today, that number is closer to 35 percent. Heroin is also cheaper now, with one-tenth of a gram cost-

ing roughly $10. One gram equals roughly 0.0352 of an ounce.

Consequently, “It has become a drug of choice,” Berlin added.

The state’s attorney pointed out that if someone dies from an overdose, the dealer could face a charge of drug-induced homicide, with a sentence of between six and 30 years.

“There needs to be consequences for the people who are profiting,” he commented, adding that when there

Local business plans 3rd annual ‘Ride for John’ ‘My Child’s Life Matters’ Motorcycle event fights opiate overdose crisis

On Saturday, July 27, My Child’s Life Matters will hosts its third annual “Ride For John,” a community awareness event and celebration of life with a mission of making people aware of the truths of the current national opiate overdose crisis.

My Child’s Life Matters is the creation of Kathy Zander, owner of Resale From The Heart, a shop located at 704 N. Addison in Villa Park. Zander developed the event in memory of her son John, who lost his life to the crisis.

The day kicks off with a motorcycle ride starting off at City Limits Harley Davidson, 2015 N. Rand Road, in Palatine. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with kickstands up at 10 a.m.

“We are seeking at least 192 riders to show how many families are affected daily by an overdose/ poisoning death,” Zander said. “We will end at

the ride at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post #76 located at 570 S. Gary Ave. in Carol Stream.”

At this time, Zander said there were several speakers scheduled to appear at the event to say a few words about the cause. One of the speakers will be DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, who will discuss the state of our community in regards to the unacceptable drug poisoning rate caused by the overwhelming ease of access to opiates such as fentanyl and heroin.

Zander said the day will be focused on bringing the community together through a positive, energetic atmosphere.

There will be live musical entertainment provided

by The Last Generation.

There also will be food, lots of raffle prize drawings and a good time is promised to all attendees. There is a fee to ride, but the event is free.

Mazzochi: ‘Kwame caved’ State Representative speaks out against Attorney General’s action to reopen Sterigenics

A standing-room-only crowd showed up for the latest court call in the People of the State of Illinois v.

Sterigenics today. State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) appeared to defend the goals and intent of legislation the General Assembly enacted to combat the adverse effects of ethylene oxide.

Representative Mazzochi spoke at a news conference on the DuPage County courthouse steps opposing the State of Illinois’ proposed consent decree with Sterigenics. The decree would allow the company’s medical device sterilization plant in Willowbrook to reopen without the company admitting any fault; and even though the Illinois EPA ordered the facility closed in February citing excessive emissions of ethylene oxide (EO), which is considered carcinogenic.

“The holes in this consent agreement are big enough for Sterigenics to drive a truck through,” Rep. Mazzochi said. “In the Matt Haller Act we passed this spring, legislators gave the regulators the tools they need to protect communities from unhealthy ethylene oxide emissions.

I am disappointed Attorney General Kwame Raoul caved in to Sterigenics by signing this agreement without first addressing the serious public health and environmental safety that local families require; and with no meaningful notice or input to the stakeholders involved.”

Sterigenics attorneys proposed to the court that once the court entered this consent decree, that would “moot” local municipalities’ efforts to stop Sterigenics pollution and fight nuisance claims. Mazzochi disagreed.

“This fight is not over,” she said.

“The next step is to vigorously oppose the current proposed consent agreement in court.”

The Attorney General’s office withheld the terms of the agreement from state representatives until after it was signed. Rep. Mazzochi, an attorney, pointed to several loopholes that Sterigenics could use to reopen immediately, while avoiding the additional oversight and layers of environmental protection the latest legislation requires, which she declared “unacceptable.” She also reiterated that neither the Attorney General’s Office nor the Illinois EPA have released findings contradicting their original Seal Order claim that Sterigenics posed an environmental and public health threat.

“The Attorney General’s action signals his unwillingness to defend the original Seal Order finding that Sterigenics is an environmental health hazard, and to fight to keep our local residents safe,” she added.

A court hearing on the state’s consent agreement to reopen Sterigenics is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24 at the DuPage County Courthouse.

Rep. Mazzochi intends to file a “friend of the court” brief to discuss the legislative intent that prompted the passage of Senate Bill 1852, known as the Matt Haller Act, to prohibit the renewal of any permits for facilities that violate federal or state standards for ethylene oxide emissions; and which prohibits ethylene oxide use by facilities with egregious violations requiring a seal order.

I’d forgotten what it was like to have a toddler in the house. We recently spent a few grand days with our granddaughter, who is 14 months old. She’s a tiny package but full of content.

What she lacks in size she makes up for in personality. She’s definitely an individual. I remember thinking that was cool when my kids were young.

Cool and miraculous – that each of them are so unique. So themselves.

She’s called a toddler because, well, she toddles: walking with an unsteady gait, which gets more fluid each day.

She may be toddling, but she’s also strutting. (I wouldn’t have thought that combination possible if I hadn’t seen her in action.) She is definitely

Tom Cullerton applauds move to prevent Legionella outbreaks Illinois may soon have new regulations and rules in place to prevent water-borne illnesses like Legionnaires’ disease.

A General Assembly rulemaking committee has given the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency the authority to more than double the minimum amount of chlorine required in public water supplies.

This move is proposed to prevent the outbreak of heinous water-borne diseases such as Legionnaires’.

by Legionnaires’ disease. Cullerton served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 as an infantryman and has been a staunch advocate for Illinois’ veterans, especially those at the Quincy home greatly affected by continuous cases of Legionnaires’ disease during the last governor’s watch.

During a rulemaking hearing, the Illinois Department of Public Health acknowledged that was the case in the 2015 Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the veterans home in Quincy, but it also argued that “the minimal residual disinfectant found in the public water supply

was found to be drastically ineffective.”

“Our nation’s heroes have survived foreign conflict zones – the greatest danger they face should not be living in a state facility,” Cullerton said. “I’m glad to see the committee work in a bipartisan manner to not only take care of our veterans but all residents of Illinois.”

The new rule will raise the minimum required level of chlorine in water to 0.5 milligrams per liter of “free” chlorine, or 1.0 milligrams per liter of “combined” chlorine.

Federal regulations only stipulate there be “detectable” levels of chlorine and do not enforce a spe-

cific minimum level.

According to the CDC, people at increased risk of Legionnaire’s disease are 50 years of age or older or have certain risk factors, such as being a current or former smoker, having a chronic disease, or having a weakened immune system.

“People across Illinois should be able to rely on a safe and reliable water supply,” he said. “If we all work together we can institute a real solution to eliminate the risk of harmful diseases such as Legionnaires’ indefinitely.”

Thank you. *** This story about Frank Robb capturing this alligator in Humboldt Park is a nice, feel good story, but I have to admit I just got tired of hearing about it. All these alligator updates day in and day out, and then he goes and throws out the first pitch at Wrigley Field and turned on Buckingham Fountain the next day.

The guy caught an alligator, OK, but he’s treated like some kind of hero.

Compare all the attention him and this alligator got on the news to the story about how 9 were killed and 32 wounded in shootings that happened in Chicago over the weekend.

We really need to get our priorities straight. *** According to the Pentagon, last year we dropped about 40,000 bombs on the world. There is a genocide going on right now in Yemen that we are supporting. There are young children that we have separated from their families and stuck in the Trump camps on the border who have died on our watch. It’s for the teachers to line their pockets. I think any teacher who goes on strike who makes a decent wage in this day and time should be fired. So if the Chicago Public School teachers want to go on strike, fire them all.

St. Charles Road traffic reduced to one lane in each direction Bridge project started this week; motorists urged to use alternate routes

The St. Charles Road Bridge construction project began in full on Monday, July 22. The bridge is located on St. Charles Road, just west of Route 83. According to the Village of Villa Park, St. Charles Road at the bridge will be reduced to one lane in both directions (east and west) for the duration of the construction project.

The village strongly encourages motorists to use alternate routes during the construction project.

The portion of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail that passes underneath the bridge will be completely closed for the duration of the construction. According to the village, a detour route has been posted.

The bridge had weight restrictions posted in 2014 and received emergency repairs in 2017. The current project is being funded in part by an Illinois Special Bridge Program grant. The Village of Villa Park, the City of Elmhurst and the State of Illinois are providing funding for the remainder of the project costs.

According to the Village of Villa Park, questions and comments regarding the project should be directed to the village’s engineering division at 630-834-8505.

Berlin said his office is not just looking to prosecute drug dealers, however. For users, the state’s attorney’s office favors treatment over jail, the latter of which he said is “a waste of resources,” adding, “The idea is to get them treatment.”

A FOCUS (First Offender Call Unified for Success) court program, for instance, offers individuals caught with drugs a chance to remove the charges.

“We look for [non-violent] offenders to get into that program,” Berlin explained, adding that chosen individuals all go through the same court process “so they’re handled in a consistent manner.”

“The idea is to get treatment” before the individual potentially commits a violent crime, he said, and emphasized that if an individual is experiencing an

overdose, he or she won’t be prosecuted for possessing under 3 grams of heroin—in hopes that the individual or someone else will call 9-1-1 for help.

“This is a community problem. This is a public health problem,” said the state’s attorney, adding that the criminal justice system alone is “inadequate to solve the problem.”

“We need to educate our children from the day they’re born about brain health,” Conroy said. “We should not be ashamed that we struggle with our brain health.”

She also said “big pharma” shares a place in the opioid crisis, going back years when drug companies insisted their products weren’t harmful or addictive — and doctors believed them.

“This crisis is not getting better. We need to think outside the box,” Conroy added.

Other aspects of the discussions included how we seem to think we should not have to suffer pain, which

can lead to overuse of addictive painkillers; funding for mental health; and how hospitals can be more involved in offering programs to treat addiction.

The Fenton athletics program had plenty of on-the-field successes this past school year.

That success also extended into the classroom, where many Bison student-athletes were cited for academic excellence.

During the recently completed spring season, Marcus Astorga, David Burch, Marco Faraone, Matthew Janovsky, Angelo Mendoza, Giovanni Mendoza, Donavan Perez and Ricardo Saucedo were named academic all-conference in baseball.

Austin Adkins was academic all-conference in boys gymnastics, while Jeffrey Andrews, Kyle Cacioppo, Fabian Calvillo, Jacob Jarmolinski, Diego Ramos and Shane Salski were academic all-conference in boys tennis.

For boys track and field, Javier Cabral, Nathan Exconde, Pawel Gasior, Roman Gomez, Jordan Loyola Arcos, Ethan Queyquep, Manuel Saucedo, Matthew Sisto and Christian Zavala were academic all-conference honorees.

In boys volleyball, Ricardo Avelar, Matthew Cyran, Lucas Feddersen, Tyler Ford, Anthony Galeana and Nicholas Hanusiak were all-academic choices.

Several members of the Villa Park Mariners swim team competed in Saturday’s DuPage Swim and Dive Conference Blue Division ‘B’ Meet in Roselle. Hanover Park, one of the teams in the Blue Division, served as the host of the four-team meet.

Wood Dale and Glendale Heights join Villa Park and Hanover Park in the Blue Division this year.

The main object of each swimmer in Saturday’s meet was to achieve a personal-best time for the season. A total of 49 Mariners (29 girls and 20 boys) competed in the meet. The Villa Park swimmers competed in a total of 167 races and achieved personal-best times in 106 events. The Mariners enjoyed the second-highest success rate in achieving personal-best times (63 percent). The Wood Dale Water Rats, whose contingent at the meet included 11 swimmers, earned personal-best times at a 71-percent rate (27 of 38 events). Hanover Park (18 swimmers; personal bests in 38 of 63 events) turned in a success rate of 60 percent, while Glendale Heights (36 swimmers, 73 of 128 events) had a personal-best success rate of 57 percent.

There were no relay events in Saturday’s meet.

A majority of the Mariners who swam in Saturday’s Blue Division ‘B’ Meet earned a personal-best time in at least one event. Six Villa Park swimmers in the 8-and-under girls level earned personal-best times in multiple events. Teia Fragoso, Belle Knudtson and Madelyn

Legutki each achieved personal-best times in three separate events. Brooklyn Gibney, Eleanor Moser and Elin Stempel each reached personal bests for the season in two events.

Cillian Connolly earned three personal bests in the 8-and-under boys division, while Kieran McCormack achieved two personal-best times for the season.

Matea Mockler of the 9-10 girls division swam three personal-best times for the season on Saturday; Francesca Monteleone earned a personal-best time in one event.

Ryan King of the 9-10 boys level delivered his best times of the season in three events. Spencer Kaina, Nino Pesola and Nolan Raczkowski each turned in personal-best times in two events.

Nine Villa Park swimmers in the 11-12 girls division achieved personal-best times for the 2019 season in multiple events.

Hannah Daly and Bree Waca both swam personal bests in four events. Norah Luedtke, Nora McCormack and Tabitha Smaczny all swam three personal-best times. Lily Chivilo, Megan Hasler, Allison Smaczny and Lily Vaughan Conboy all earned personal bests in two events.

The Mariners in the 11-12 boys level who reached personal-best times for the season on Saturday included Jack Brisbois and Joshua Jackson, who each earned three personal-best times. Filip Palutkiewicz swam a pair of personal bests for the season.

Gabby Knudtson earned three personal-best times in the 13-14 girls division.

Caitlin O’Connor and Rose Vega each earned one personal-best time.

Villa Park’s 13-14 boys swimmers who reached personal-best times on Saturday included Cameron Aristuk and Simon Luedtke, who each reached their best times of the season in four events. Hudson De La Rosa and Augie McCormack each earned two personal bests.

The Mariners in the 15-18 girls level who earned personal-best times included Regina Brisbois and Lexi Ream, who both turned in their best times of the season in four events. Rebecca Lopez Egan swam three personal bests, while Cami Alcala and Avery Magierski provided their best times of the season in two events each.

Kylie Moses turned in a personal-best time in one event.

Scott Fitzgerald piled up four personal-best times in the 15-18 boys level.

Raymond Brisbois, Sam D’Alessandro and Brendan McCormack all swam to their best times of the year in three events.

Zachary Fox turned in one personal-best time.

While some Villa Park swimmers completed the season at the Blue Division ‘B’ Meet, other Mariners will finish the 2019 season at this Saturday’s Blue Division ‘A’ Meet at Glendale Heights. The team that wins this year’s Blue Division title will move up to compete in the conference’s Red Division in 2020.

Willowbrook student-athletes recognized for accomplishments

Willowbrook athletic teams had no shortage of accolades roll in this past school year.

During the recently completed spring season, the Willowbrook badminton team won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title.

Charlotte Dewyer, Jonelle Faith Fabian, Sania Irfan, Hanna Konrath, Grace Wachholz and Sydney Wilson earned all-WSC Gold Division honors.

Dewyer and Konrath were state qualifiers.

The Willowbrook baseball team also won a WSC Gold title. Joey Guthrie, Jack Hines, Trevor Jaloszynski, Marshall McDonnell and Ryan Mintz were all-WSC Gold picks, along with Jack Nilles, Sam Tumilty and Scott Tumilty.

Hines was the conference MVP, while Mintz was the conference pitching MVP. Hines also earned all-state honors.

In boys gymnastics, Brendan Bailey, Collin Donaldson, Noah Pulli, Cooper Ross and Daniel Saldana were all-WSC Gold selections.

Bailey and Ross were state qualifiers. The Warriors won the WSC Gold Division title.

In girls soccer, Sara Fitzgibbon, Elizabeth Florey, Maura Heneghan and Grace Tumilty were named to the all-WSC Gold team. Florey also earned all-sectional honors and Tumilty was an all-sectional honorable mention choice.

For softball, Emma Barrington, Amy Bussa, Caroline Dooley, Annemarie Knudtson and Caitlyn Kulczyski were named to the all-WSC Gold team.

Logan Bliss, Drake DelValle, Joe Garner, Dan Martinez and Abdulla Osmani earned all-WSC Gold distinction.

For boys track, Mohamed Aly, Matthew Caron, D’Onte Gholston, Jazmany Mares, Tarell Regans, William Stout and Tyler Walenga earned all-WSC Gold honors.

In girls track, Miani Blackwell and Victoria Palma were all-conference picks with Palma qualifying for the state meet.

Jevon Lowery was all-conference in boys volleyball.

Willowbrook winter sports During the winter season, Katelyn McCann, Stephanie Dasbach and Grace Tumilty earned all-WSC Gold honors for girls basketball. The Warriors won the WSC Gold title.

For boys basketball, Matas Masys and Everett Stubblefield Jr. were all-conference picks.

In girls bowling, Brianna Bryant, Holly Helsper, Katie Pettinger, Paula Williams and Makaylah Jones were all-WSC Gold picks. Willowbrook won conference, regional and sectional titles.

Helsper finished 27th in the state,

while Jones was the regional individual champion. Bryant, Helsper, Pettinger, Williams, Sabrina Edwards, Jones, Maddie Brown, Ashley DeLeon and Victoria Salazar were members of the state-qualifying team.

For girls gymnastics, Karli Wilson and Tess Placek were sectional qualifiers.

In boys swimming, Jack Bruns, Aidan Nichols, Sean Pienkos and Eric Hoda were all-WSC Gold selections.

For football, Mohammad Ayes, Emmanuel Chavez, CJ Harris, Dean-

dre Holliday, Franshun Jordan, Matt Knudtson, Ryan Ranieri, Nick Rushing, Sam Tumilty, Scott Tumilty and Tyler Walenga were all-conference picks for the WSC Gold champions.

The Tumilty brothers were WSC Gold MVPs, while Nick Rushing was the conference defensive player of the year. Sam Tumilty was an all-state pick, while Scott Tumilty was an allstate honorable mention selection.

Jackson Hathaway, Logan Rattana and Taylor Sarovich were all-confer-

ence in boys golf, while Emma Rattana was a state qualifier in girls golf.

Mario Giase and David Rizzo were all-WSC Gold selections in boys soccer. Rizzo was an all-sectional honorable-mention selection.

For girls swimming, Anna Christiansen and Elissa Haake were allWSC Gold picks. Haake and Ellie Hassler were state qualifiers.

Payton Ceh and Kaitlyn Karcz were all-conference selections in girls volleyball.

Soccer camp in Villa Park

Boys and girls ages 5 to 12 took part in Chicago Fire Soccer Club’s recent summer camp at the Iowa Community Center. Instructors Jack Skoczen (back row of group photo, far left) and Lucas Mantovani (back row, far right) ran the camp, which met from 9 a.m. to noon for five straight days. Each session ended with a scrimmage. The instructors gave each camper an evaluation at the end of the camp. As a part of the camp, each participant will get a ticket to a Chicago Fire match. They will be able to take part in a brief camp just before the match. Skoczen is from the United Kingdom, while Mantovani is from Brazil. One feature of the Chicago Fire camps (the Fire hold several summer camps in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa) is that the instructors stay

with host families. Skoczen and Mantovani spent the week of the camp with the Larr family of Villa Park. “For me, it’s the best part,” said Mantovani of staying with host families. “Every week it’s a different family and a different experience. It makes us grow, not just as coaches, but as people.”

Elmhurst American Legion baseball team concludes season at district tournament Parnell cracks grand slam in Post 187 win against Steger

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team wrapped up its season at the recent 11th District tournament held at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream. Wheaton Post 76 hosted the tournament.

Elmhurst opened play with a tough 7-6 loss to host Wheaton. The Muddogs led 3-0 after two innings and 6-2 after five innings. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and won it with a pair in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Elmhurst had 14 hits in the game.

Ian Steinorth (York) had two hits and an RBI. AJ Parnell (Addison Trail) added a hit. Jack Enright (IC Catholic Prep) had a big game, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

Tim Bowbin (York) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Connor Gwaltney (Timothy Christian) had a hit and a run scored. Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden) had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Dave Sykora (IC Catholic Prep) had two hits. Andrew Pietrucha (Fenton) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. O’Donnell doubled in the game and Enright had a stolen base.

Ken Slepicka (Fenwick) took the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and struck out 11, while walking only two.

The Muddogs came back through the loser’s bracket and scored a 12-2 win over Steger in five innings. Elm-

hurst led 2-0 after one, 8-0 after two innings thanks to a six-run outburst in that frame, and 12-0 after three.

Steinorth went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk. Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. Parnell went 1-for-1 with two runs scored, a walk and five RBI. Enright went 1-for2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Bowbin went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Gwaltney went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

O’Donnell had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Sykora scored a run and walked twice.

Pietrucha had an RBI and Adam Parat (York) walked once. Gwaltney doubled and Parnell cracked a grand slam. Steinorth, Bowbin and Malek each stole a base.

Aidan Kress (Fenton), Tim Beecroft (Fenton) and Enright each pitched in the game. Kress fanned four in two innings. Beecroft fanned two in 1 1/3 innings, while Enright had two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Elmhurst was then eliminated after a 9-1 loss to Wheaton. Steinorth had a hit, while Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) had a pair of hits. Gwaltney had a hit and a run scored. Sykora had an RBI and Bowbin drew a walk. Gwaltney’s hit was a triple.

Parnell went the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs, while striking out three. Elmhurst was plagued by four errors in the game.

Wheaton led 4-0 after two innings and 5-1 after four.

The Muddogs finished the season with a 10-8-1 mark.

Recent Addison Trail graduate Michael Scali is taking his bat and glove to the Sunshine State.

Scali will continue his baseball career later this summer at Division II University of Tampa in Florida.

“I went down there for a showcase tournament (in the Tampa area) and they were there,” said Scali, explaining how he got on Tampa’s recruiting radar. “We visited some schools down there and made the decision on which one was the best fit.”

Tampa, under the direction of coach Joe Urso, who won a national coach of the year honor this season, won the NCAA Division II national title in 2019.

Scali, who plays for the elite Schaumburg Seminoles travel program, said a number of factors went into his decision to choose the Spartans and Tampa to continue his baseball and academic careers.

“I like that the school is right in the city,” he said. “My major is going to be in sports management/marketing and they have a good program and a lot of internships available with teams such as the Tampa Bay Rays (Major League Baseball), Tampa Bay Lightning (National Hockey League) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (National Football League). Those are all right there. I want to stick in something having to do with sports. It’s also a beautiful campus and the baseball team is really good. The coaches are really nice. When I visited there they treated me well. I didn’t get to meet any of the players because it was summer but I’m assuming they are nice and welcoming as well.”

Scali, a two-time all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division selection as a junior and senior, said he was recruited to play the middle infield and outfield. He played shortstop at Addison Trail and currently plays short for the Seminoles.

“This was my dream since I was a little kid,” he said. “I wanted to play baseball in college down south somewhere. My cousin (Connor Cook) is big into baseball (plays for UW-LaCrosse and the Fon du Lac Spiders in the Northwoods League in the summer) and my one uncle played in college as well. I am going to like the whole college experience. I am going to get the opportunity to have another pack of guys to hang out with for four years and get that bond going.”

Scali said his four years in the Addison Trail baseball program were enjoyable. “I had a lot of fun at Addison Trail,” he said.

“I liked how every year we would have workouts and then we would always come together as a team and always ended up hanging out together as a team. We gelled really well. Junior year we did really well and won games against conference rivals. It was a fun year. This year was an alright year, but we still had a lot of fun. I had a

captain-type of role where I still got to develop kids and help get them better with their fielding.”

Scali recalls working kids camps at Addison Trail with his teammates.

“They were mandatory sessions where we would go in and help with the kids camps,” he explained. “It was a group of guys that are helping these young kids. It gets you thinking about how these young kids look up to you. I learned a lot from those camps.”

Current day, Scali is wrapping up his Seminoles travel season. He re-

ported the team has played in six tournaments so far and has reached the title game in all of them, winning the top prize three times.

He will report to Tampa Aug. 19.

“School starts on Aug. 27 and then our fall baseball starts the first and second week of September,” Scali noted.

“This tournament I’m playing in (last weekend) is my last one with the baseball guys I grew up with and bonded with. It’s starting to sink in now that I’m playing in college because I’m leaving for Tampa in a month.”

Hines receives Academic All-State recognition

Recent Willowbrook graduate Jack Hines, who was named Most Valuable Player of the West Suburban Gold Division for the 2019 baseball season, also received Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) Academic All-State recognition. A shortstop, Hines has committed to play collegiate baseball at McHenry County College. Hines helped the Warriors to an overall record of 24-7 and a conference mark of 17-1 during the 2019 season. Willowbrook won its first conference championship in baseball since 2002.
