Montini Catholic High School’s Class of 2020 was originally scheduled to celebrate its commencement on May 17. That ceremony was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s graduates finally had a chance to cross the stage in their caps and gowns during Friday’s drive-through event in the Lombard school’s parking lot. Graduates made an appointment to take the stage sometime between about 2:30 p.m. and approximately 7:30 p.m. Each graduate walked onto a temporary stage as his or her name was announced. Family members were able to stand under a tent to watch graduates take the stage. Each graduate posed for pictures with Montini Principal Kevin Beirne. After graduates walked across the stage, Montini President Jim Segredo directed them to move their tassels from the right side of their caps to the left. This year’s graduating class at Montini features about 150 students. The members of the school’s Class of 2020 include Villa Park resident Maggie Connelly (left), who is pictured on the stage with Principal Beirne (right). Connelly will attend Illinois State University, where she will study business.

COVID-19-related expenses may include sanitizing village hall, public buildings, or emergency vehicles; technology costs related to working from home and social distancing requirements; increased costs of police and fire response; purchase of personal protection equipment; and many other costs.

Expenses submitted by municipalities will be reviewed by the County Auditor’s Office and a third-party auditor. The expenses must not have been accounted for in the municipality’s most recently approved budget and funds must be spent by Dec. 30.

Municipalities will receive $51.84 per capita, which is more than the $41.50 the state is reimbursing agencies through its Local Coronavirus Urgent Remediation Emergency Program.

DuPage County approved intergovernmental agreements with the following municipalities at its board meeting: Addison, Aurora, Bartlett, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Bolingbrook, Burr Ridge, Carol Stream, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Hanover Park, Hinsdale, Itasca, Lemont, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Roselle, St. Charles, Villa Park, Warrenville, Wayne, West Chicago, Westmont, Wheaton, Willowbrook, Winfield, Wood Dale, and Woodridge.

Elmhurst is receiving around $2.4 million in funds, while Addison is receiving nearly $1.9 million, Villa Park around 1.1 million, Bensenville around $953,000, Wood Dale around $705,000 and Oakbrook Terrace around 150,000, Municipalities will also have to approve the agreements to receive funds.

The DuPage County Board voted to allocate $43 million in federal relief funds to reimburse DuPage municipalities for qualifying expenses incurred due to the COVID-19 response.

DuPage County received more than $161 million in federal funds through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and was the only government agency in the county to receive a direct allocation from Congress.

The DuPage County Board established the Local Government Municipal COVID-19 Reimbursement Program to provide a portion of these federal funds to assist DuPage cities, towns and villages, recognizing the increased expenses all local governments have incurred as they provide government services during the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 response has stressed all government budgets, particularly those providing day to day service to our community residents. We are pleased to provide our municipal partners with financial relief as they continue to carry out their vital mission, serving and protecting the residents of this County,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

“We’re grateful to the DuPage County Board for recognizing the importance of partnering with the DuPage municipal leaders and providing this much-needed financial relief.

While we work together through this unprecedented public health crisis, we are dedicated to utilizing these funds wisely to provide safety and services for the benefit of our residents,” said Willowbrook Mayor Frank Trilla, who serves as President of the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference.

DuPage County awards $1 million to local nonprofits

Elmhurst University has decided to remove the standardized test score requirement for students applying to attend in the fall of 2021, giving prospective Elmhurst students a choice about whether to submit the scores as part of their admission application.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, high school juniors and seniors have had limited opportunities this past spring to take or retake the ACT or SAT. Testing dates have been canceled, testing venues have been cut or changed, and the move to online testing has not worked well for disadvantaged students.

The test-optional program at Elmhurst is considered a pilot for the 2020-21 application year, and will be reassessed for future years. The program will empower students to build what they consider to be their strongest application.

“We want students to know that we understand the challenges and uncer-

tainty they’ve faced as a result of the pandemic, and that we want to make every effort to preserve their health and well-being while also providing an accessible, holistic application process,” said Vice President for Admission Timothy Ricordati.

While all applicants will have the option to be considered for admission without submitting standardized test scores, Elmhurst will continue to receive and review scores for students who choose to submit them. Applicants who choose not to submit test scores will be required to submit an essay.

Test scores are not required for applicants to be considered for merit-based grants and scholarships.

To coincide with changes to the admission process, Elmhurst has introduced a streamlined online application for all of its audiences. The Elmhurst University admission application for 2021-22 is available at elmhurst.edu/apply.

Mazzochi, City offer free shred truck for residents State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) invites residents of the 47th Illinois House District to take advantage of a free document shredding event on Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Elmhurst University, 190 So. Prospect Ave. Drivers will enter the Alexander Parking Lot at the University via Prospect Avenue and then exit on to Alexander Boulevard. Residents are asked to remain in their cars, volunteers will be available to unload documents and have them immediately shredded.

Residents who want to ensure contactless pickup are requested to place their shred materials in their vehicle’s trunk. Documents for shredding must be placed in paper or plastic shopping bags, with a limit of four bags per car.

“This is an incredibly easy, safe, and quick process that will be helpful to many out there who have docu-

ments they just don’t feel comfortable throwing away,” Mazzochi said. “It is the perfect opportunity to safely dispose of old bank statements, checks, and other sensitive papers to help prevent identity theft.”

Experts advise that you stop identity thieves, who are known to go through a person’s trash, by shredding any documents that contain personal or financial information, such as mail you receive from the Internal Revenue Service, documents from the Department of Motor Vehicles, and any employment-related correspondence. This also includes any child- and school-related mail.

A small act of kindness can make a large impact.

The DuBose family of Villa Park recently donated the proceeds from its Fourth of July lemonade stand to Villa Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2801.

David and Erica DuBose and their three children—son Logan (age 10) and 6-year-old twin daughters Mackenzie and Charlotte—live within walking distance of the post. Before the COVID-19 pandemic altered the post’s community events, the family frequently visited the post for bingo on Tuesdays and its fish fry on Fridays.

On the Fourth of July, the family decided to have a lemonade stand outside of its home.

“It was kind of all of our idea; it was something patriotic,” said Erica DuBose.

Logan, who spent a couple of hours manning the lemonade stand on a very hot Independence Day, asked his parents what they would do with the money from their lemonade sales. Logan then suggested that they donate the money to the VFW post.

The DuPage County Health Department has recorded more than 10,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county.

As of July 19, the health department indicated 10,185 total confirmed cases of the COIVD-19 coronavirus in DuPage County, including 494 deaths.

One week earlier, the department’s July 12 update indicated 9,721 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 481 deaths.

According to the July 19 report, there were 285 confirmed COVID-19 cases among Villa Park residents, including five deaths. The update from July 12 noted 274 cases of the virus among Villa Park residents, including four deaths.

The first death in the county related to COVID-19 was reported on March 19.

The county health department reported 14 deaths related to the virus in the county in March. There were another 193 deaths related to COVID-19 reported in April. Another 191 deaths related to the virus were reported in May. There were 79 deaths related to COVID-19 among DuPage County residents in June.

Through the first 19 days of

July, there were 17 deaths related to COVID-19 reported in the county.

The DuPage County Health Department notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change.

Of the 494 deaths related to COVID-19 in DuPage County through July 19, 285 (about 58 percent) involved residents age 80 and older. Another 119 deaths involved residents in the 70-79 age group, while 57 deaths involved residents between the ages of 60 and 69.

About 93 percent (461 of 494) of the COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County, therefore, have involved residents 60 and older.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) update on July 19, there have been 7,295 confirmed deaths related to COVID-19 in the state. The IDPH reported over 161,000 confirmed cases of the virus as of July 19, with more than 2.2 million total tests performed.

“We strive to help others and do good things for the community,” explained Blankshain.

After the cancellation of several of its important annual events this year, it seemed the post was in need of a boost. Logan provided it with the recent donation.

The post responded to Logan’s act of kindness by giving him a certificate of appreciation. Blankshain also sent Logan a thank-you letter.

“Thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous donation to the VFW Post 2801 in Villa Park,” stated Blankshain in his letter. “Our main goal is to help veterans in need.

Some are homeless, some are in need of home repairs, some just [need]

companionship.”

Blankshain added in his letter that the post has received great support from the community over the years.

He stated that the donation from Logan would help the post achieve its goals.

“Please give your parents a big hug for raising you to care about others,” said Blankshain at the conclusion of his letter.

“We never expected them to be so grateful,” said Erica DuBose of the post’s response to the donation. “It was very sweet of them.”

“We honestly didn’t think that much of it,” said David DuBose of his son’s donation to the post. “It was very nice of them to recognize it.

Hopefully this will encourage more kids to do things like this.”

You’re going to see an increase in the number of people testing positive. Hey governor moneybags, I keep noticing the number of restaurants and other businesses closing for good. The real unemployment rate in Illinois is 21 percent and there are 1.45 million people unemployed. I always hear the billionaire say that he relies on science and data when he makes his decisions. Apparently, unemployment data never figure into these decisions, but it’s all good. Your medical experts will still get paid and you can keep counting your billions.

the state’s 7,295 deaths related to COVID-19 have involved residents of Cook County. About 41 percent (5.15 million out of 12.67 million) of the state’s residents live in Cook County, according to the latest statistics from the United States Census Bureau.

The IDPH report from July 19 states that 3,233 (about 44 percent) of the COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois have involved residents age 80 and older.

Another 1,748 deaths related to the virus involved residents in the 70-79 age range, while 1,311 deaths have involved residents in the 60-69 age group. About 86 percent of the state’s deaths related to COVID-19, therefore, have affected residents 60 and older.

Through July 19, the IDPH reported 374 statewide deaths related to COVID-19 during the month of July.

The daily report from July 19 indicated six deaths related to the virus.

Three of those six deaths involved residents of Cook County. Two deaths involved residents of Will County, while one death involved a resident of

St. Clair County.

The IDPH daily report from July 18 indicated over 46,000 tests for COVID-19 in the state—a single-day high. That marked the third new record in as many days. Through July 15, there hadn’t been more than 39,000 tests reported in a single day.

The July 16 report indicated just over 43,000 tests statewide. The July 17 report noted more than 43,000 additional tests. The July 18 report indicated over 46,000 tests, while the July 19 report indicated about 32,000 tests.

As of July 17, the IDPH reported that more 3,974 of the state’s deaths related to COVID-19 involved residents in long-term care facilities.

As of July 18, the IDPH reported there were 1,356 people in Illinois who were hospitalized with COVID-19. One week earlier, there were 1,342 people in the state who were reportedly hospitalized with COVID-19.

Of those 1,356 residents hospitalized with COVID-19 as of July 18, 320 were in an intensive care unit (ICU), while 132 were on ventilators.

addressing reforms previously proposed, the Democratic majority focused on “spending taxpayer money we don’t have, increasing income tax hikes (and) failing to fix the unfair property tax system.

“I’m here to say myself and my caucus will not let anyone forget about the crisis of confidence and corruption that persists in Springfield under the Democratic majority control,” Durkin said.

He also said no measures beyond the creation of a task force to suggest ethics reforms were voted upon or passed into law because the proposals “do not fit into the business model of the Illinois Democratic Party of today.”

Metropolis Republican Rep. Patrick Windhorst, a member of the Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform, said the panel’s report on proposed legislative measures should and can be completed to then allow bills to “move forward.” The report deadline, set by statute, was March 31.

Meanwhile, Durkin called “frustrating” Gov. JB Pritzker’s direction of the state’s COVID-19 response “without conferring with the legislative bodies.” He said additional restrictions to combat the public health emergency must be made in consultation with the members of the General Assembly.

“This is not a kingdom,” the minority leader said.

Durkin also said the qualifications challenge he filed against Chicago Democratic Rep. Eva Dina Delgado is still pending. She was appointed to fill Arroyo’s House seat after he resigned, and Durkin took issue with Arroyo’s proxy votes being used in the process. He said he asked that the panel of representatives tasked with handling the challenge be convened in May when the House met in Springfield but his request was ignored.

Different strokes for different folks My husband and I agree on many things. We share a lot of the same opinions and have been known to finish each other’s sentence or have the same thoughts at the same time.

Still, there are lots of times when we don’t see eye-to-eye, and not just because he’s 8 inches taller than me. Even after spending decades together there are things — lots of things — that we approach differently.

We’ve spent so much time together during the quarantine months that these minor differences have been more noticeable – in an interesting, contemplative and sometimes humorous way.

You might think that after all these years we’d have an agreed upon method for folding laundry. No way.

He folds towels one way (the wrong way); I do them another. The same goes for socks and T-shirts. I guess we both are too stubborn to adapt to the other’s technique.

He recently had to renew his driver’s license. When the new one came in the mail, he grabbed a scissors, cut the old one up and tossed it in the trash. I’d never cut up an old license, much less toss it in the trash. I have all my old driver’s licenses in the junk drawer in the kitchen. Something about cutting them up seems, I don’t know, wrong.

We even approach our morning showers differently. I start the water and test it and test it again (and maybe again) until it is just the right temperature. Then I get in. My husband takes a wilder, more brazen approach. He gets in the shower before ever turning on the water so he never knows if he’s going to get blasted with cold or hot or something in between.

He is a stickler for details, unless the detail involves leftover toothpaste goo in the sink. Apparently he was born with the recessive gene for toothpaste goo; it is invisible to him. I am not goo recessive. I am completely and utterly able to not only perceive toothpaste goo but to clean it up, even if it is goo from a toothbrush other than my own.

He is a unitasker. He sets out to do one thing and he does it well. I couldn’t unitask if my life depended on it. I flit about from one thing to the other and sometimes forget what I was

Small businesses may apply for a portion of $10 million in relief through this first come, first served program. PPP allows business owners to keep employees on payroll and pay overhead expenses during closures. The extended deadline is Aug. 8.

PPP loans have an interest rate of 1% and can be fully forgiven if used for payroll, rent, utilities or mortgage interest. Participating lenders can be found on the U.S. Small Business Administrations web site at sba.gov.

If you have a dishwasher (not your spouse, but the mechanical kind), you probably recognize the most putsy portion to unload is the silverware section. When I unload, I do the silverware first. Make hay while the sun shines. My husband leaves the silverware until the very end. Always put off until tomorrow what you could do today. Or maybe he’s hoping I’ll hop in and help with the forks.

When we first got married, I was a dog person and he was a cat person.

Unlike folding laundry, we were able to find some middle ground on this one. We are now both dog and cat persons. Marriage can bring about great growth sometimes.

You don’t have to be exactly the same as someone else to love them.

Thank goodness for that. My husband drinks milk; I drink water. He shuts the lights off; I forget and leave them on (Squirrel). I like lots of blankets; he kicks them off. I see hair glumps in

the drain; to him they are as invisible as toothpaste goo. Still we’ve been known to finish each other’s sentences and have the same thoughts at the same time. I call it ESP; he calls it coincidence.

And so it goes.

Marijuana sales create $52 million in state revenue in first six months

Since January, Illinois residents and visitors have spent nearly $240 million on legalized recreational marijuana, producing $52 million in state revenue, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Of that, $34.7 million came from excise taxes, while $18 million came from sales taxes.

Per the law, 8 percent of that revenue will be shared with local governments, while the Illinois Department of Revenue estimates $25.9 million from excise and sales taxes will be directed to the state’s General Revenue Fund.

Also under the law, 25 percent of revenues collected from recreational cannabis sales will be reinvested

through the R3 program (Restore, Reinvest and Renew) in communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the justice system, and to address substance abuse and prevention and mental health concerns.

The R3 program last week announced $31.5 million in grant opportunities to organizations working in historically underserved communities across Illinois.

“Illinois has done more to put justice and equity at the forefront of this industry than any other state in the nation, and we’re ensuring that communities that have been hurt by the war on drugs have the opportunity to participate,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a news release.

The announcement signals progress

for one of the legalization bill’s three main social equity measures. Another, which is aimed at allowing groups from areas disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs to obtain an ownership stake in the industry, has stalled amid licensing delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A lead marijuana advisor to Pritzker has said September is a goal date for when new dispensary and craft grow licenses will be released.

Another key equity measure is expungements for low-level marijuana offenses, and the governor’s office said Pritzker is working with Chicago State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, and Illinois state’s attorneys to advance those goals.

Governor hits the road to make census push Says undercount will impact the neediest communities the most

Gov. JB Pritzker encouraged Illinoisans to complete the 2020 U.S. Census and touted a state investment in youth employment programs July 16 during two public appearances in Rockford.

The state has a 66.9 percent census self-response rate currently. That’s nearly 5 percentage points better than the 62.1 percent national rate, but well below the state’s 2010 final self-reporting tally of 70.5 percent.

In 2000, the self-response rate in Illinois was 69 percent.

Pritzker’s message at the Rockford City Market was that filling out the census is “an act of civic engagement” that has a direct effect on the amount of federal funding the state receives. In turn, an undercount often disproportionately impacts the neediest communities in the state, which typically have lower response rates.

“The same ZIP codes that are impacted the worst by COVID-19— those that have been hurting for generations—are on track to be the most undercounted at a time when frankly we need full funding,” he said.

A 1 percent undercount for the state could result in it losing $195 million per year in federal funding for the next decade, Pritzker said.

That equates to about $1,500 per year in federal funding lost for each person not counted in the census.

Based upon the 2010 count, the

state collects $34 billion in federal funds annually, the governor added.

This year’s numbers have Illinois tied with Virginia for seventh among all states. The response portal will be open until Oct. 31 due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pritzker signed an executive order last year dedicating $29 million to the census outreach effort through the Illinois Department of Human Services.

The outreach is done through a “hub and spoke” model in which funding passes through IDHS to 31 intermediary organizations that lead outreach efforts in 12 regions of the state. Those organizations partner with other community groups to target outreach at a hyperlocal level.

“We’re working with trusted messengers and grassroots community organizations to focus on personalized targeted outreach groups,” Pritzker said.

While the governor said the census has historically “not been an accessible tool,” leaving “too many people locked out and left behind,” he pointed out that there is no citizenship question on the census form and organizers are doing all they can to make communities that are fearful of such a question comfortable in filling out the form.

“It’s been incredibly uplifting and inspiring to see so many Illinoisans taking to the streets to demand justice, so I need everyone to know,

filling out the census is an act of engagement,” he said.

In May, however, some of those census community organizers told Capitol News Illinois their outreach efforts have been stymied by the pandemic and associated stay-at-home orders.

Youth employment program; Rockford casino Earlier on July 16, Pritzker spoke at the Lockwood Park equestrian center and children’s farm to tout a COVID-19 Summer Youth Employment Program. The state dedicated $9.3 million through the Illinois Department of Human Services to support the program to employ 2,400 young adults statewide between June and August 2020, helping them train for and find work.

The program is geared toward low-income youth who live in high-poverty communities and counties hardest hit by the pandemic. Job opportunities through the program are coordinated by community-based organizations in partnership with IDHS. Pritzker was also asked about the progress on a Rockford casino, and said while he does not have an exact date as to when the Illinois Gaming Board will sign off on applications from potential casino operators, he is hopeful it occurs “certainly over the next couple of months.” He said it must be done by October, per the

law’s deadlines.

The governor said the Gaming Board was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, just like everything else.

Now that it is back at work, it’s dealt with a number of backlogged issues.

It’s important, he said, because revenues from the gambling expansion bill passed last year are to fund infrastructure programs throughout the state. “(IGB) just got up and running the sports wagering in the state … a difficult thing to get done but they

did, and expanded video gaming terminals in the state, another part of our capital program,” he said. “And then of course, we want very badly to make sure that our casinos get up and running. It’s economic development, its job creation, it’s opportunity.

And of course, it’s also revenue for the capital projects that we so badly need.”

The board operates independently, he said, and a major focus is ensuring there is no corruption in the licensing process.

“Introverts, check on your extroverted friends. They are not OK,” quickly became a popular social media meme at the start of the pandemic.

But a recent study suggests the opposite. The study, conducted by Virginia-based research consultancy, Greater Divide, surveyed 1,000 American adults and found that those who scored higher on the measure of extroversion were less likely to be experiencing mental health issues due to stay-at-home or quarantine measures.

Some experts contribute the surprising results to extroversion being associated with more positive emotions, optimism and resiliency, while introversion has been linked to more nervousness and fear. The uncertain-

For extroverts, making use of social media networks or setting up a virtual game night or friends’ night out could be their lifeblood. While introverts tend to thrive in solitude or quiet times, it is important that they stay in touch with family and friends as well. Technology can help introverts and extroverts make those connections while physical distancing. While a virtual meeting with several people might work well for extroverts, connecting with close friends through one-on-one video chats might prove easier for introverts.

• Structure your days. With many entertainment venues and events closed, introverts and extroverts are likely adjusting to a lighter schedule.

Use downtime to pursue things of interest — maybe it’s a new hobby, trying a new recipe or learning a new language. Keeping busy can provide a sense of purpose and a brighter outlook.

• Get outside. While people still need to be physically distant, there is no restriction on getting outdoors for a walk, bike ride or just to work in a garden. A bit of sunshine and time outdoors can be a significant mood lifter.

• Make the most of face-to-face time. From big social gatherings to quick interactions with the bank clerk, people are missing this face-to-face time. For introverts and extroverts, finding new ways to make personal connections can help deal with the isolation. Make family breakfast a time to gather or schedule family game nights and other special time together at home.

Whether an introvert or extrovert, social distancing from friends and family has likely presented some mental health challenges. Finding ways to connect with others can help with stress, depression and anxiety during the pandemic.

In a court document filed July 7, the attorney general’s office, which is representing Pritzker, called this last active issue “moot” because any ruling “would not have a practical effect.”

The points raised in DeVore’s arguments that COVID-19 was not a disaster as specified in the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act were “incorporated” into the two complaints Bailey won, the office added.

McHaney nullified all of the governor’s executive orders related to COVID-19 made after April 8. He also decided that the Illinois Department

of Public Health has the “supreme authority” to close businesses and restrict residents’ activities in a public health crisis.

Pritzker’s office, Bailey and legal experts disagree on the scope of that order—some assert it affects only Clay County while others maintain it applies statewide.

Bailey, in an interview July 16, said the court set a deadline of July 22 for DeVore to file a response to the state’s request.

Talking to kids about the new reality during COVID-19 Navigating life during the COVID-19 pandemic can be difficult. Like everyone, children have questions and are facing their own struggles as they grapple with this new normal.

Adults may be unsure how to broach this topic with their children.

These tips may help adults talk to their children about their new reality during the pandemic:

• Provide the (age-appropriate) facts. Younger children may picture the virus as a scary monster that can sneak through their window, said Dan Santangelo, LCPC with Linden Oaks Behavioral Health. Let them know it’s a small germ and talk to them about catching their sneeze or cough in their elbow, keeping their hands clean and being careful not to touch their eyes, nose or mouth.

For older children, relate it to something they already know. For example, much like a cold or flu virus, COVID-19 can spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. The distance germs travel can be up to 6 feet, according to research, which is how social distancing became a way to avoid contracting the virus.

Provide the facts (in an age-appropriate manner) and let them ask questions.

• Give them a role in the fight against the virus. “I find that kids want to help if you encourage them and let them know you need their help,” said Santangelo. Let kids know that handwashing, wearing a mask when out in public, wiping down frequently-touched surfaces, and using their elbow to play catch with their sneezes and coughs all contribute to the fight against the virus.

• Pay attention to the messages you’re sending and be honest. “Kids are radars,” says Santangelo. “They feel us and they know (when some-

thing is wrong). They always do.”

Some adults may be dealing with a job loss or the loss of a loved one.

Discussing these weightier topics with children can be tricky, but providing them with information about what’s happening takes away the fear of the unknown, says Santangelo.

Parents might also consider contacting a counselor to help their family deal with the situation.

• Reassure them that this is temporary and they are safe. It isn’t yet known whether school will be open in the fall, but tell kids what is known so they understand what to expect in the short term. Let kids know that questions will be answered as soon as information is available.

• Stick to a schedule. It may look different than what they’re used to, but parents should try to maintain some structure to the day where it matters most. Keep set wake and sleep times, eat meals together, schedule family game time, and encourage kids to stay active, such as going for walks, riding their bikes or

Summer baseball

The Villa Park Venom 11-U baseball travel team, which is part of Villa Park Youth Baseball, played in the recent Spring Swing tournament in Lombard. The Venom lost the opening game of the tournament on Friday, July 17. One day later, the Venom improved to 1-1 in the event with an 8-5 victory over the Cobras Baseball Club of Burbank. The game was tied at 5-5 at the end of the fifth inning. Villa Park scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

The Venom held the Cobras scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete an 8-5 victory. The photo above shows Michael Garner connecting for a hit in the top of the sixth inning. His hit drove in Kyle May, who is pictured above middle, heading home to score the go-ahead run that gave the Venom a 6-5 lead. Another photo (far right) shows Aubry Raffen—the winning pitcher in the contest. Also pictured at right is Ben Taglia, who is shown firing a pitch early in the battle. Villa Park played one more game on Saturday. The Venom suffered a 9-2 loss and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.

State bowling association files lawsuit challenging Pritzker’s executive orders

Calls orders ‘unconstitutional and improper’ The Illinois State Bowling Proprietors Association (ISBPA) last week said that it has filed a lawsuit asking a Lee County state court to invalidate Gov. JB Pritzker’s “unconstitutional and improper” exercise of authority to issue consecutive emergency declarations that improperly restrict the number of people allowed in a bowling center.

ISBPA officials said that successive orders issued by the governor related to COVID-19 have caused “tremendous emotional and economic hardship” during the past several months.

“Frankly, Gov. Pritzker has thrown a gutter ball on this one. Even medical experts agree that bowling is not a highly dangerous activity with regard to COVID-19 spread,” said R. Wil-

liam Duff, Jr., executive director of the ISBPA. “As the businesses of our members buckle under the governor’s orders, it’s hard to explain to employees, the bowling public and family members why other activities rated by experts as more dangerous than bowling enjoy the governor’s favor,” said Duff.

“That’s why we want the court to intervene and put a stop to this before more harm is caused.”

“Our members have suffered substantial pain and burden as a result of Gov. Pritzker’s unconstitutional, successive orders, and they now face insolvency and the permanent loss of their livelihood,” Duff added. “The governor’s ill-advised policies have resulted in staggering losses for our members, and these unconstitutional

moves threaten thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue.”

Under the current orders, bowling centers, regardless of size, are restricted to a maximum of 50 people per location, while businesses such as gyms, waxing centers, tattoo parlors, retail stores, nail salons, restaurants, and other businesses face no 50-person cap and are allowed to have as many people as they want so long as they do not exceed 50 percent of their capacity, Duff explained.

“That makes no sense, is not based on science and needs to be addressed by the court,” he said.

He noted that bowling centers around the state have instituted a broad range of safety and sanitation measures to ensure the bowling public could enjoy a safe environment with strict rules that include maintaining at least one empty lane between each group bowling; daily temperature and wellness checks of employees; on-going sanitation of all venue-provided equipment; and reducing touch points in all facilities.

Duff added that member bowling centers also have elevated their already robust cleaning procedures and installed floor markings, plexiglass and signage to enforce social distancing.

Duff also noted that bowling can

be done while wearing a face covering and that the ISBPA had invested an estimated $40,000 to purchase additional personal protective equipment to provide to bowling centers around the state.

“The governor’s improper interpretation of the law could lead to the absurd result of a perpetual state of emergency and also give him the unilateral authority to regulate the economy and society by executive order,” Duff said. “The governor now has made five disaster declarations invoking his emergency powers, and our view is that his wishes on this particular topic are contrary to the plain meaning of the law that is on the books and could lead to irrational results. We know that one result is that his approach is devastating our industry members, many of which are family owned and multi-generational businesses.”

Duff said that there are about 270 primarily independent family bowling centers in the state and that they provide an estimated 5,000 jobs and purchase about $65 million in goods and services on an annual basis. He added that member centers participate in various charity events that range from Junior Achievement and Special Olympics to the Lions Club International and the Midwest Shelter for

Homeless Veterans.

Most, if not all, Illinois bowling centers support various youth leagues, participate in community fundraising efforts and donate prizes to different parent-teacher groups, sports teams and organizations that back disadvantaged children, he said.

“Our members are active and engaged members of dozens of communities in the state,” Duff said. “From Chicagoland to downstate Illinois, bowling centers play an important role in the civic life of the places they call home, and the governor’s orders are hurting them.”

The ISBPA lawsuit asks the court to issue a restraining order prohibiting the state from enforcing the governor’s order and also requests that the latest Executive Order issued by the governor be ruled invalid.

“Our members are suffering serious and irreparable harm in the form of insolvency or the permanent loss of their business and reputation as a result of these illegal orders,” Duff said. “While we tried to work cooperatively to find a solution, the state was unwilling to work toward a fair solution, so we were left with no choice but to seek a court order. We believe that we have both the facts and law on our side, and we look forward to presenting our case to the court.”
