Village receives OSLAD grant to redevelop Lufkin Park Grant will provide $400,000 in funding; redevelopment plans include a walking trail, playground, spray pad and band shell

STAFF REPORT

The Village of Villa Park was recently awarded an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant to redevelop Lufkin Park. On July 8, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced $30.3 million in grants for 87 local park projects throughout the state. The grants will help communities acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities. The Village of Villa Park was one of 15 DuPage County communities to be awarded an OSLAD grant last week. The village received a $400,000 grant to redevelop Lufkin Park, which is located at 1000 S. Ardmore Ave.

The public pool at Lufkin Park closed at the end of the 2017 season. The pool and main pool building were demolished three years ago, in July 2019. The area where the pool and pool building stood has since been leveled and filled in with grass seed. Greg Gola, the director of Villa Park’s Parks and Recreation Department, spoke briefly about the OSLAD grant during the Villa Park Village Board meeting on July 11. Gola stated that the process of announcing the recent grants was delayed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the village already has assembled its plans to redevelop Lufkin Park, but he wasn’t sure of an exact timeline for the redevelop-

ment. Gola mentioned that the park has been vacant since the demolition of the pool. He said the village would like to bring more amenities to the area. He described the upcoming work to redevelop the park as a twoyear project. “If we can get started this year, we’re ready to go,” Gola said. The village will allocate the funds to redevelop the park. The redevelopment will reportedly include a walking trail, a playground with a nature theme, a ninja course, a floating fishing pier, a spray pad and a

Gola noted during the recent village board meeting that the plans to redevelop Lufkin Park also call for expansion of the park’s pond. He said the larger pond will be stocked with fish. A news release issued by the village stated that the village and the parks and recreation department aim to provide more recreational opportunities, both passive and active, to the residents of Villa Park. The

news release stated that the residential area directly east and north of Lufkin Park is currently void of any parkland or recreation amenities. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) administers the state’s OSLAD program. OSLAD grants can provide up to one half of a project’s funds. The OSLAD program, which began in 1987, has invested over $433 million in more than 1,800 local park projects. The OSLAD program receives dedicated funding from a percentage of the state’s Real Estate Transfer Tax.
