Willowbrook High School students organized Saturday afternoon’s assembly that took place outside of their Villa Park school. The event to protest against racial injustice included a march around part of the school property. A portion of the march included a procession down Ardmore Avenue. Officials from the Village of Villa Park discussed plans for the event with organizers prior to the demonstration. The chants during the march included “Hands up, don’t shoot,” “Black lives matter,” “Silent cops are guilty, too,” and “No justice, no peace, no racist police.” About 20 police officers worked the event and accompanied the demonstrators on the march. The speakers at Saturday’s event included Michael Childress (above), the president of the DuPage County chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Residents urged to write cards, send emails to veterans IDVA promotes ‘Operation Rising Spirit’ During the COVID-19 pandemic, Illinois’ veterans are unable to meet with friends and family members since visiting restrictions are in place at state veterans’ homes to curb exposure to the virus.

To brighten the days of the state’s veterans population the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs launched a campaign to raise the spirits of military veterans and the staff who care for them, and Tom Cullerton, the Chairperson of the

Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee is urging residents to participate.

“Our veterans have put their lives on the line to keep us safe, and this is one small way for us to raise their spirits and show them we still appreciate the sacrifices they made to keep our great nation safe,” State Senator Tom Cullerton said. “I encourage DuPage County residents and our students looking for ways to help the community to take just a little time to send uplifting messages to our he-

roes.”

COVID-19 tests can detect active or past infections, potential immunity Many people worry that they may have COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, or have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 and not known it.

Those who have recovered from the virus likely wonder whether they are protected from getting it again.

Testing can provide answers.

There are currently two broad categories for COVID-19 tests: one is to check for active infection (i.e., the presence of virus) and another is to check for previous infection.

Tests to diagnose an active COVID-19 infection If someone has COVID-19 symptoms, a viral test can reveal if they are currently infected with the virus.

In a viral test, a sample of fluid is collected from the respiratory system (such as swabs of the inside of the nose or throat, or saliva) to confirm the presence of the SARSCoV-2 virus.

Molecular (PCR) test: A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is a molecular diagnostic test that

detects genetic material from the virus. PCR tests are very sensitive and specific for the presence of SARSCoV-2. There are several different types of PCR tests currently available, some of which can generate a result in as fast as 15 minutes.

Antigen test: An antigen test detects viral proteins found on or within the virus. Antigen tests are very specific for SARS-Cov-2, but are not as sensitive as molecular (PCR) tests. A positive antigen test, just like a positive molecular test, indicates the patient is infected with the virus and presumed to be contagious. However, since antigen tests are known to be less sensitive than molecular tests, negative antigen test results should be treated as presumptive and confirmed with a molecular (PCR) test, if necessary.

For patients with a doctor’s order from an Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH) physician, drive-up COVID-19 molecular (PCR) testing is available in the EEH Corporate Center parking lot (4201 Winfield Road, Warrenville). Patients should ask their doctor whether a drive-up test is appropriate for them.

The FDA has authorized the use of certain at-home COVID-19 test kits in which people collect their own samples (either a nasal swab or saliva) at home and mail it to a lab for processing. Home tests are available only to individuals with a physician order and are not currently offered by Edward-Elmhurst Health.

For this reason, individuals with a positive antibody test should not assume that they cannot be reinfected by SARS-CoV-2 and should continue practicing social distancing and all the other recommendations for preventing disease spread. For now, the antibody test helps experts better understand the prevalence of disease in our community.

This summer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will launch an 18-month nationwide COVID-19 antibody study to better understand the immune response to COVID-19 and whether it diminishes over time.

The antibody test can also help identify individuals who may be eligible to donate a part of their blood called convalescent plasma, which contains antibodies against the virus, and may help treat those who are seriously ill from the virus.

Edward-Elmhurst Health, in conjunction with Versiti, Inc., is looking for patients who have recovered from COVID-19 and would be interested in donating plasma. The donor requirements for donating plasma are similar to those for donating blood, but also include documentation of a previous positive COVID-19 molecular (PCR) test and a clinical history of no symptoms for at least 14 days. The process for donating plasma is very similar to donating blood.

DuPage County offices begin reopening to public DuPage County’s recovery efforts continue and the offices have started to safely move forward on a path to normalcy. Slowly and safely, County officials are ramping up in-person employee attendance based on recommendations from the state and the local Health Department.

The safety of the staff and the public visiting County facilities remains the top priority. As such, social distancing practices will continue and will require employees to wear masks while in the office when not able to maintain prop-

Villa Park Village Board members voted 5-2 during their June 22 meeting to approve the sale of village property on North Avenue to a company that plans to build an indoor shooting range and gun shop on the site.

The board approved a resolution authorizing a $1.1 million sale of the village-owned property, which will be developed into a Shoot Point

Villa Park Trustees David Cilella, Nick Cuzzone, Cheryl Tucker and Robert Wagner joined Villa Park Village President Albert Bulthuis in voting to approve the resolution. Trustees Christine Murphy and Kevin Patrick voted against the resolution.

Bulthuis noted before the vote that the vote on the resolution required more than a simple majority because it involved the sale of property. Bulthuis said a two-thirds majority was required, so five votes were needed to pass the resolution.

Shoot Point Blank currently operates four businesses in the Chicagoland area. Those businesses are located in Naperville, Hodgkins, Mokena and Shorewood.

According to information provided by the village, Shoot Point Blank

approached the village to indicate its interest in purchasing the property at 257-277 E. North Ave. The property is located on the south side of North Avenue, about a quarter of a mile west of Villa Avenue.

According to the village, the typical Shoot Point Blank location in the Chicago area occupies approximately 16,000 square feet and employs 25 people.

The village stated that it is estimated the store in Villa Park will generate between $5 million to $6 million in annual revenue.

The developer’s total investment in the property will be about $4.5 million. The village estimates that if the property would be assessed at that amount, the annual property tax revenue would be approximately $113,000.

The march to protest racial injustice and police brutality proceeded south on Ardmore to Willowbrook’s main entrance. Participants carried banners and shouted various chants in unison during the march. Shortly after the conclusion of the march, participants bent down on one knee for a moment of silence.

In December 2019, the village approved a purchase agreement with Green Tide Ventures to construct a cannabis dispensary at the property.

The state of Illinois was supposed to issue 75 recreational cannabis licenses by May 1, 2020, but the state has indefinitely delayed issuing licenses because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the village, the terms of the purchase agreement with Green Tide Ventures permitted the village to consider other offers.

“The purchase terms for Shoot Point Blank are similar or better than the cannabis dispensary,” stated Villa Park Economic Development Director Patrick Burke in a June 22 memo to village board members.

Wagner and Bulthuis were the only two board members to comment on the resolution during the June 22 meeting. Wagner said he would vote reluctantly to authorize the sale. He noted that the deal would provide much-needed revenue for the village.

Wagner said he had nothing against gun ownership, and added that if there were to be a shooting range and gun shop in the village, North Avenue would probably be the best place for it.

Bulthuis stated that Green Tide Ventures hasn’t received a license from the state to sell cannabis. He said the village has no idea when the state will issue licenses, and he stated that the probability Green Tide Ventures will receive one is rather slim.

Bulthuis also said that he visited the Shoot Point Blank location in Naperville. He described the security at the business as outstanding, and commented that the business was very well run.

Village officials did not provide any timeline during the meeting about when Shoot Point Blank might open its business in Villa Park.

Reckless homicide charge filed in headon crash that killed Villa Park woman, 28

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that charges have been filed against a Bolingbrook man accused of causing a head-on crash that resulted in the death of Dulce Olivia Avila-Adame.

A felony complaint filed on June 22 alleges one count of reckless homicide against Richard Kennedy, 54.

On June 24, Judge Brian Telander issued a $50,000 with 10 percent to apply arrest warrant for Kennedy, who is currently receiving treatment for injuries he sustained in the crash.

Additionally, Kennedy has been charged with misdemeanor speeding and driving too fast for conditions.

According to the complaint, it is alleged that on June 22 at approximately 5:38 p.m., Kennedy was driving his vehicle on Route 53 in Lombard in excess of the speed limit on

State continued unemployment claims remain over 700,000 Pritzker says unemployment security agency continually trying to expand capacity

The U.S. Department of Labor released statistics June 25 showing 705,878 Illinoisans received unemployment insurance for the week ending June 20.

While that was a decrease of 4,401 continued unemployment claims overall from the previous week, according to the data, the state still saw 46,005 new initial claims for the week ending June 20, an increase of 1,311 new claims from the previous week.

As the unemployment numbers remain high, Gov. JB Pritzker said last week the Illinois Department of Employment Security is continually trying to expand call center capacity to try to accommodate increased claim volume.

He also said each state agency and department “has a kind of a reopen plan that either has been developed or is being developed,” but did not say when IDES might start opening facilities for claimants having trouble getting through to a department representative.

“It sort of depends on the locations, it depends upon the number of people that would normally be in that space and so on. We have health guidance for people who work at IDES, just like we do any other business or that we’re trying to reopen,” he said at a news conference Tuesday.

In a statement June 22, IDES also the department has set up a virtual call center that has grown to more than 560, more than doubling its capacity since the beginning of the pandemic.

That has allowed the department to handle more than 50,000 additional unemployment claims and questions that have come through the call center between May 5 and June 4, according to the statement.

An IDES spokesperson encouraged claimants to use the department’s website—which had its capacity increased early during the pandemic—to file claims and leave the phone lines for those who are otherwise unable to file a claim online.

“While we understand that claimants may be continuing to experience unique issues with their claims that require claims rep intervention, our upgrades have allowed us to process

more than 1.4 million claims since March 1 and pay out more than $7 billion in benefits,” the spokesperson said in a statement in response to questions of how a claimant can best get through to the department. “We understand that there are many cases where a claimant needs to speak to a representative to resolve an issue or make a change, which is why we are continuing to work to increase capacity.”

Pritzker said calls are also being separated by those who are seeking help in applying through online portals and those who would need assistance requiring them to provide private information. That frees up lines for those having unique problems, he said.

He added the administration has “tried to train” elected officials and their staff on “how they can assist people with their applications in the event that they’re having trouble getting through on the phone.”

IDES also announced last week it will borrow funds from the federal government to “continue to meet unemployment benefit payment obligations to claimants who have lost work as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.”

A press release from the department said the state joined eight others which have either been approved to borrow or have begun to borrow money from the feds to continue to fulfill unemployment benefit payments.

“Through the end of June, IDES anticipates borrowing approximately $300 million from the federal government through a long existing mechanism set up to enable states to continue to fund essential benefit payments when demand increases unexpectedly,” the department said in a news release. “IDES has been approved to borrow up to $3.8 billion through September 2020. During the 2008 Great Recession, the department borrowed $1.4 billion, and it was repaid in five years through a joint funding agreement with Illinois’ business community.”

The department said the Unemployment Trust Fund is 100 percent funded by employer taxes, and the ability to pay back what is borrowed “has historically come in the form

by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and IDES. The May unemployment rate in Illinois was 14.7 percent, a record high for the month dating back to 1976.

Nationally, the number was 13 percent in May, also a record high dating back to 1948.

The unemployment rate identifies individuals who are out of work and seeking employment.

New guidelines released for return to in-person education Schools told to prepare for return to remote learning in case of surge

CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Illinois released new guidelines for schools, colleges and universities to return to in-person learning in the fall, but leaders warned those plans could change if health metrics related to the COVID-19 pandemic stop improving.

“This fall will not be business as usual, and we will update our guidance as needed,” State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala said during a news conference in Chicago. “In response to challenging and changing public health conditions, schools and districts must be prepared to return to remote learning if the virus surges again.”

Students and teachers will be required to wear face coverings if they are medically able, gatherings in one place will be limited to no more than 50 people and schools must adhere to stricter cleaning and disinfecting guidelines as well as conduct regular symptom checks.

Gov. JB Pritzker said at the news conference every district must develop its own plan based on those guidelines.

Ayala added districts and individual schools will soon send additional information to parents and students.

Pritzker said the Illinois Emergency Management Agency will provide public K-12 districts in Illinois with 2.5 million cloth face masks, allowing schools to provide one to all students and staff.

Universities and community colleges will have similar guidelines for a fall reopening, including social distancing and physical spacing requirements, hand sanitizing stations, face covering requirements and symptom monitoring. Schools are also developing policies around traffic flow, cleaning of public spaces and staggered schedules for the use of laboratories, auditoriums and other group facilities, according to guidelines.

At this time, the governor’s office said, colleges expect dormitories, cafeterias, libraries, bookstores and other amenities to be available to students provided they meet approved guidelines.

If someone in a school tests positive, those who were in close contact with them— that is, within six feet for 15 to 30 minutes without a face covering, according to Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health— would be expected to quarantine for 14 days.

Pritzker said local and county health departments will play a major role in deciding a path forward when such a positive test occurs.

Pritzker first ordered all public and private schools, including colleges and universities, to close for in-person instruction on March 13 and on June 4, schools were allowed to offer limited in-person instruction and summer school programs as part of Phase 3 of the reopening plan.

Ezike said the reopening being allowed this fall is the result of

significant declines in new cases, deaths and hospitalizations since the peak of the pandemic in Illinois.

Those declines, she said, are the result of the vast majority of Illinoisans following basic safety guidelines that include frequent hand-washing, wearing face coverings when in public and practicing social distancing.

The fact that the state reports about 20,000 to 30,000 test results daily helps as well, she said. Nearly 1.4 million tests were completed in Illinois since the pandemic began.

In advance of schools reopening,

Ezike strongly encouraged parents and guardians to make sure their children are up to date on their vaccinations and that all Illinoisans get caught up on basic wellness procedures, including cancer screenings.

She noted there have been steep declines in those procedures since the pandemic began.

“We need to make sure that the kids get checked out by their providers and get their life-saving immunizations,” she said. “Yes, there could be another surge of COVID-19 in the fall or perhaps earlier, but let’s make sure we take this opportunity now to get to our

doctors, let’s get our immunizations, let’s get our health screenings, let’s get as healthy as we can.

Pritzker also said the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act, provided $510 million in relief directly to school districts to address local needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dr. Ayala and I are encouraging all districts to use this funding to close the digital divide by providing devices and internet connectivity and are directing the majority of

the remaining funding to purchasing laptops, tablets, virtual coaching for new teachers and internet connectivity to advance a vision of equity for our schools and keep our kids on track for success,” the governor said.

Pritzker’s office said the Illinois State Board of Education will use another $54.1 million in CARES act funding to provide funding to schools in six categories: laptops and tablets, internet connectivity, virtual coaching for teachers, professional development, and support for entities that cannot receive direct funds.

How an infectious disease physician will spend the summer of 2020 A guest column from Elmhurst Hospital We’re starting the summer in Illinois on a positive note: the numbers of COVID-19 cases are decreasing in our state.

That’s great news: it means that 10 weeks of separation has resulted in countless lives saved, but it does not mean the virus is gone or that cases won’t escalate again.

What does it mean that COVID-19 cases are decreasing in Illinois?

After SARS-2 CoV infects someone it takes on average 5 days (range 2-12 days) to get symptoms and another 5-10 before the symptoms are severe enough to require hospitalization. There is a twoweek lag from time of exposure to hospitalization.

Schools closed in March, just when the earliest community transmission was recognized, followed by bars, restaurants and other business offices to curb the spread of COVID-19. We first saw travelers from Europe, Asia and other hard-hit states getting sick.

Within two weeks, a surge of patients with COVID-19, in need of oxygen and ventilators, filled hospitals. They were infected two weeks earlier at churches, hair salons, family functions and other events, before the stay-at-home order started.

In April, we saw essential workers and their families getting sick. This was followed by outbreaks at several nursing homes that affected residents and staff. The most recent cases were clusters at workplaces. All these groups got infected during the stay-athome period because they could not stay home.

During the first two weeks of June, we discharged far more COVID-19 patients than we were admitting and now we only have a handful of patients left, most of whom were admitted weeks ago and are still in need of ICU care.

Let’s celebrate the many thousands of lives saved by the heroic efforts of simply staying home.

Let’s take advantage of the summer months to spend time outdoors where the wind blows the virus away. I will be enjoying hikes, bike rides, the occasional run and spending time with my family in the back yard.

My children, who are all in their 20s, have taken my heed. They are limiting their face-to-face interactions to only the most important people in their lives. Fortunately, work and school are still all online. My wife must work outside, but she wears a mask at all times and carries a small bottle of hand sanitizer.

The less the virus spreads this summer, the less chance it can escalate in the fall and winter. By then, we may have greater supply of antivirals, more research into other medications and be closer to a vaccine.

As we brace ourselves for a return to normal, it’s not going to be normal.

It’s not time to let your guard down. It only takes one unprotected exposure to get infected.

Taking the mask off at lunch while eating with co-workers is risky. If it’s an exposure in an office to one person and that person self-isolates, that’s only one more infection. But if it’s an exposure in a social gathering or in a crowded building, that could be an outbreak leading to a chain of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

Summer 2020 won’t be typical We will have to find ways to enjoy the sunny days without inhaling the virus from a friend or stranger.

People are wondering, “Will there be a second wave?” This depends on how well we do this summer with social distancing and masking, and how well municipalities, churches and stores implement distancing guidelines.

I’m taking the long view, looking to the summer of 2021. By then, there may be a safe and effective vaccine, more studies on medications and widely available treatments for COVID-19.

I am going to enjoy a quiet summer this year.

DuPage County reports nearly 9,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 463 deaths June 28 update shows 246 confirmed cases in Villa Park residents, including three deaths

The DuPage County Health Department has recorded almost 9,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county.

As of June 28, the health department indicated 8,944 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, including 463 deaths.

The health department’s June 28 update showed 246 confirmed cases in Villa Park residents, including three deaths. One week earlier, the June 21 update indicated 234 confirmed cases among Villa Park residents, including three deaths.

The June 14 update from the county health department noted 8,434 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in DuPage County, including 429 deaths. The June 7 update indicated 401 deaths related to COVID-19.

The May 31 update reported 371 deaths in the county related to the virus, while the May 25 update indicated 338 deaths. The update of May 17 reported 296 deaths related to COVID-19.

According to the June 28 report, 268 of the county’s 463 deaths related to COVID-19 involved residents 80 and older. There were 111 deaths

involving residents in the 70-79 age group, and 53 deaths in the 60-69 age group. About 82 percent of the county’s death’s related to COVID-19 have involved residents 70 and older, while 93 percent of the deaths have involved residents 60 and older.

The first COVID-19 related death in the county was reported on March 19.

The DuPage County Health Department has stated that the number of positive COVID-19 cases is likely much higher than listed because of unreported or untested cases in the community.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) update on June 28, there were 6,888 confirmed deaths related to COVID-19 in the state. The IDPH reported more than 141,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Illinois, with over 1.5 million tests performed.

According to the IDPH, 3,065 of the state’s 6,888 deaths related to COVID-19 have involved residents 80 and older, while 1,642 deaths

have involved residents in the 70-79 age group. There have been 1,233 deaths related to the virus among Illinois residents in the 60-69 age group.

Approximately 86 percent of all COVID-19 related deaths in the state, therefore, have involved residents 60 and older.

The IDPH report from June 28 included 15 additional COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois—the lowest number of deaths reported in any of the department’s daily updates throughout June. The update from one day earlier—June 27—indicated 26 additional COVID-19 related deaths in the state. The June 26 update from the IDPH indicated 39 additional deaths in Illinois related to COVID-19. From June 1-28, the IDPH reported a total of 1,499 deaths related to COVID-19.

The June 25 IDPH update indicated over 31,000 tests for COVID-19 in the state—the highest number of tests reported any of the department’s daily updates in June. The update of June 26 indicated more than 30,000 additional tests, as did the update of June 27. The report from June 28 indicated nearly 24,000 additional tests.

The Great Prairie Trail CROP Hunger Walk is planning a virtual walk this year, with respect to social distancing and ensure the safety of walkers and volunteers. Everyone is invited to participate in the new format, but with the same mission. The goal of the walk is to support Church World Service hunger relief efforts around the world and five local food pantries—in Lombard, Villa Park, Addison and Glendale Heights. The virtual walk will take place Sunday, Oct. 4, and faith-based organizations are encouraged to organize a walk at their own location or ask their members to walk individually in their own neighborhoods. This will reduce the number of people gathering at one location, but still ensures that the walk can raise funds for hunger relief that is needed even more now, due to the health and economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis. All are encouraged to think about organizing a team and signing up online. Each team will need a team leader, so consider that way of serving too. The camp, which featured instructors from P2 Soccer, concluded on Friday, June 26. Participants maintained social distancing during each session. American Legion baseball team opens season in Michigan Galanis hits grand slam; Nifty double relay play cuts down runner in finale

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team is officially back in business.

The Muddogs headed up to Michigan recently to kick off its season with a quartet of games.

While Elmhurst went 0-4 in Michigan, coach Mike Biondo saw some positives.

“The first day was tough on our boys,” he said. “With our very first games of the year being over 90 degrees back to back, our bodies weren’t ready for it, and it showed in the second game. But they kept on digging deep, trying to find ways back into the game. It was good to be on the field. Once we begin to take care of the baseball, eliminate walks and get our timing down with hitting, I believe this team will be very tough to compete with.”

Elmhurst opened play at Stevensville, Michigan against Hudson (Michigan) Post 180 and dropped a 10-6 decision. Hudson led 10-1 after three innings before Elmhurst scored five runs in the fifth inning to inch closer. The Muddogs had four hits.

Conor Baxter, Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden), Jake Galanis (Leyden) and Ricky Saucedo (Fenton) each had a hit with Galanis hitting a grand-slam home run. O’Donnell and Saucedo each had an RBI. O’Donnell’s hit was a double. Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) stole two bases. Ethan Pieniazek and Jason O’Donnell (Leyden) pitched for Elmhurst.

In a 10-1 loss to Stevensville, Elmhurst found itself down 8-0 after three innings. The Muddogs had three hits. Malek, Baxter and Jimmy O’Donnell each had a hit.

Malek stole another base. Galanis took the loss on the mound, while Malek also pitched.

On the second day of action, Elmhurst dropped a 14-2 game to Valparaiso (Indiana) Post 94. Valpo scored nine runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. Elmhurst had five hits and issued 12 walks.

Aldo Flores (Leyden), Galanis, Brennan Fisher (IC Catholic Prep), Jason O’Donnell and Pieniazek (Willowbrook) each had a hit. Galanis’ hit was a double. Jason O’Donnell stole a base. Jimmy O’Donnell, JB Perez (Leyden) and Nick DeSimone (Fenton) pitched.

Answers

O’Donnell took the loss. He struck out six in two innings.

Elmhurst then dropped a 7-5 decision to Three Oaks (Michigan) Post 204. Three Oaks led 2-1 after two before Elmhurst scored three runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4. Three Oaks went up 6-4 in the fourth and Elmhurst got as close as 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Three Oaks had 16 hits in the game.

Elmhurst had seven.

Fisher and Galanis each had two hits and an RBI. Flores, Baxter and Jimmy O’Donnell each had a hit.

Saucedo drew two walks. Fisher had two doubles, while Pieniazek stole two bases. Elmhurst stole six bases in seven attempts in the game. Saucedo and Jimmy O’Donnell pitched.

Galanis hit .400 on the trip with a double, the grand slam and six RBI. Fisher hit .333 with two doubles and an RBI and Saucedo also homered in Michigan.

Biondo cited strong defensive play in the final game against Three Oaks. On a ball hit into the left-center gap that went to the fence for what appeared to be a triple, left fielder Saucedo threw to Galanis, the shortstop, who relayed to Baxter at third base to throw out the runner.

“It was a great relay play,” Biondo said. “It was a big play at a key moment in the game when we were only down by one.”

Elmhurst then welcomed Stevensville to the area for a doubleheader played at Redmond Park in Bensenville. Stevensville won the opener 1-0. Stevensville scored its only run in the fifth inning and had five hits, while Elmhurst had two hits. Flores and Fisher each had a hit.

Shawn Kwasny (Westmont) took the loss for Elmhurst. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four hits, while striking out seven. Saucedo pitched the final 2/3 of an innings.

Stevensville pitchers combined to strike out 14 Elmhurst batters.

Stevensville took the nightcap by a 6-1 count. Fisher went 2-for2 with a run scored, while Baxter and Galanis each had a hit. Fisher and Baxter each had a double. Fisher and Galanis each stole a base.

Jimmy O’Donnell and Pieniazek pitched for Elmhurst.

Elmhurst was scheduled to play Pirates Baseball Chicago 18U earlier this week at Community Park in Addison.
