Bond set for former Bensenville man charged with concealing homicide Deceased victim was discovered in Elmhurst in 2000 On Thursday, July 7, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Interim Chief of Police Michael McLean announced that Romula bond had been Mendoza set for a former Bensenville man who fled after being charged in 2000 with Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a Class 3 felony. Romulo Mendoza, 46, appeared in court, where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $1 mil-

lion with 10% to apply.

On February 4, 2000, Mendoza and his two roommates, Carmelino Gomez, 62, and Pedro Garcia, were arguing at the residence they shared in Bensenville when the verbal argument turned physical.

At some point, Gomez grabbed Garcia from behind, placing his arm around Garcia’s neck, causing his death. It is alleged that Gomez and Mendoza then loaded Garcia’s body into a car, drove to County Line Road in Elmhurst near Lake Street Frontage Road, and dumped Garcia’s body on the side of the road. Garcia’s body was discovered the following day by

a passerby.

An investigation into the death led to charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Concealment of a Homicidal Death (both Class 3 felonies) against Gomez and Concealment of a Homicidal Death charges against Mendoza. In September of 2000, Gomez entered a plea of guilty to one count of Involuntary Manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On May 31, 2000, after posting bond, Mendoza failed to appear in court at which time a no-bond arrest warrant was issued. Mendoza was arrested last month attempting to

re-enter the country at the southern border of the United States. He was subsequently transported to DuPage County to face the charges against him.

“Twenty-two years ago, Romulo Mendoza failed to appear in court on charges he concealed a homicidal death in DuPage County,” Berlin said. “The apprehension of this defendant sends the message that law enforcement in DuPage County will never give up on a case, regardless of how much time may have passed.

“I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their continued efforts,” Berlin said.

“I would like to thank the detectives, evidence technicians and police officers who thoroughly investigated this case 22 years ago,” McLean said. “Their dedication ensured the fugitive responsible for this appalling crime was brought to justice and a measure of closure could be given to the victim’s family.”

Mendoza’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18, for status in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Mazzochi hosting second property tax assessment seminar State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), together with York Township Assessor Deanna Wilkins, is hosting another seminar for district residents on understanding and appealing property tax assessments. Rep. Mazzochi previously partnered on a seminar with Downers Grove Assessor Greg Boltz in May. “Everyone is struggling right now, especially homeowners trying to keep up with their American Dream,” Rep. Mazzochi explained.

Rep. Mazzochi most recently served on the Democrat-led Property Tax Relief Task Force. The unwieldy, 80-member task force met over the course of the latter half of 2019, but failed to produce any legislation.

Rep. Mazzochi, along with other House Republican members of the task force, filed a package of property tax relief bills in 2020. The supermajority Democrats refused to allow any of those bills to be heard in committees.

DuPage remains among counties at High Community Level for COVID-19 The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported 27,543 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 48 deaths since July 1.

According to the CDC,28 counties are now rated at High Community Level for COVID-19, an area that includes DuPage and Lake counties in northeast Illinois as well as Peoria, Champaign and Quincy. An additional 43 counties in Illinois are now rated at Medium Community Level.

Currently, the IDPH is reporting a total of 3,462,948 cases, including 34,198 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of July 7, 1,309 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 149 patients were in the ICU and 47 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators. The preliminary seven-day statewide case rate is 216 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 Illinoisans.

State Representative Deb Conroy has announced a diaper and school supply drive this summer to benefit the 46th district.

Diapers and baby supplies can be dropped off at Representative Conroy’s district office, located at 28 S. Villa Ave, Villa Park. Donations will be given to Outreach House in Lombard, an amazing organization that serves all of DuPage County. Currently, Outreach House is especially in need of size 5 and 6 diapers, baby hygiene products, diaper rash cream, baby wash/shampoo, and baby lotion. We will accept these donations until August 31st.

Largest passive house complex in U.S. breaks ground in Villa Park 348-unit multi-use luxury apartment building to deliver 40-60 percent energy savings with state-of-the-art green building features

Eco Terra, a seven-story, 348-unit mixed-use luxury apartment complex that has just broken ground in Villa Park, is set to become the largest passive house- and net zero-certified development in the United States.

The project, being built by Burr Ridge-based Hawthorne Development Corporation, is designed to provide 40-60 percent energy savings over conventional buildings, superior indoor air quality, and uniform temperatures in every room while also providing an upscale living environment with extensive amenities.

The ultra-low-energy, fully sustainable complex is being built to PHIUS (Passive House Institute U.S.) standards for zero-carbon built environments—the most difficult standard to achieve in new construction.

Phius has notified Hawthorne that ECO Terra is the largest U.S. development to qualify for its certification to date.

The developer also expects the all-electric building to meet the requirements for net zero energy use and net zero carbon certifications, with all energy to be produced on site with solar panels charging Lithium-ion batteries to run the facility.

Four members of Montini Catholic High School’s Class of 2022 received special recognition during the Lombard school’s Founder’s Day Award Ceremony at the end of the 2021-22 school year. The four seniors received Montini’s 2022 St. Pope Paul VI Award, which honors students who exhibit excellence in the areas of academics, extracurricular participation, service to the school community, leadership and character. She will attend the University of Notre Dame, where she plans to study engineering. Montini Catholic High School is named after St. Pope Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini), who was elected to the papacy in 1963, during the planning of the creation of a Catholic high school in Lombard. Mariners recognize outgoing senior swimmers All five of the longtime Mariners are members of Willowbrook High School’s Class of 2022

The Villa Park Mariners honored their five senior swimmers before last week’s home meet against Woodridge.

All five of the outgoing Mariners graduated from Willowbrook High School in May. The Mariners’ outgoing swimmers include Regina Brisbois, who spent seven years with the program. Brisbois is the valedictorian of Willowbrook’s Class of 2022. She will attend Augustana College, where she will

major in biology with plans to follow a pre-med course. She intends to become a surgeon.

Avery Magierski, who spent 10 years with the Mariners, is another of the program’s outgoing swimmers.

Magierski will attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she will study forensic psychology.

Saverio D’Alessandro is closing out 13 years as a member of the Mariners. D’Alessandro has enlisted in the United States Air Force for the next six years. He heads off to boot camp

on Aug. 2.

Scotty Fitzgerald, who has been a member of the Mariners for nine years, is preparing to compete in another sport. His goal is to become a Formula 1 racecar driver. He is currently training for Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series events in the fall.

This year’s quintet of outgoing Mariners also includes Zach Fox, who has spent 12 years with the program.

Fox will attend College of DuPage and will eventually transfer to Northern Illinois University.

Allison Smaczny, Maisie Thompson, Hannah Daly and Naomi Aldana formed a winning team for the Mariners in the 13-14 girls level’s 200-meter freestyle relay. The four girls finished the event in a first-place time of 2:20.87.

Some of Villa Park’s swimmers will finish the 2022 season by competing in this Saturday’s DuPage Swim and Dive Conference Blue Division ‘B’ Meet in Hanover Park. Some other Mariners will close out the season by taking part in the conference’s Blue Division ‘A’ Meet in Glendale Heights on July 23.

The Mariners will compete against swimmers from three other teams (Glendale Heights, Hanover Park and Wood Dale/Addison) at the Blue Division ‘B’ and ‘A’ meets.

FOID, red flags and restraining orders: How state laws regulate firearm purchases Highland Park shooter was able to buy assault weapon despite previous police run-ins

A mass shooting in Highland Park at a Fourth of July parade prompted questions about how the suspect was able to obtain a gun in a state with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Law enforcement officials have said that the Highland Park shooting suspect, Robert Crimo III, 21, legally purchased and possessed the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 that he used in the attack that left at least seven dead and dozens injured.

Gun laws in Illinois regulate the purchase and possession of guns and ammunition. In order to legally possess a gun, the owner must have a Firearm Owners Identification Card, or FOID card.

Despite the existence of two previous reports regarding apparent suicidal and homicidal tendencies exhibited by Crimo, he obtained a FOID card and was legally allowed to purchase weapons and ammunition.

In April 2019, Highland Park police responded to a call that Crimo attempted to commit suicide with a machete one week prior. The report also stated that it was handled by “mental health professionals.”

In September 2019, police returned to the home in response to a report that Crimo was using drugs, was depressed and had threatened to “kill everyone.”

Crimo and his mother denied that account. Highland Park police initially confiscated 16 knives and one sword.

No one was arrested, and Crimo’s father claimed ownership of the knives, which

police later returned to him.

At that time, Highland Park police completed a “Clear and Present Danger” form. The form states that clear and present danger reporting shall be used by Illinois State Police to identify individuals who, if granted access to a firearm or ammunition, pose an actual, imminent threat of substantial bodily harm to themselves or others.

The Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau, the administrator of the FOID card program, determines whether the subject of the clear and present danger report possesses a FOID card or has a pending application. At the time, Crimo had neither.

But three months after the September 2019 visit from Highland Park Police, Crimo did apply for a FOID card. Because at that time he was still under the age of 21, he needed a sponsor for approval. His father signed the application, state police have said.

After Crimo submitted his application, a background check would be initiated to determine whether there were any circumstances that prohibited him from gun ownership.

Illinois law allows state police to deny an application for a FOID card, or to revoke or seize a FOID card, if they find that the current or prospective cardholder is subject to any of the following disqualifications: • Is under 21 years of age and has been convicted of a misdemeanor or found to be a delinquent; • Has been convicted of a felony under

the laws of Illinois or any other jurisdiction; • Is addicted to narcotics; • Has been a patient of a mental health facility within the past five years; • Is mentally or developmentally disabled; • Has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility; • Intentionally made a false statement on the FOID card application; • Has been convicted within the past five years of battery, assault, aggravated assault, or violation of a protective order in which a firearm was used or possessed; • Has been convicted of domestic battery or aggravated domestic battery.

If Crimo would have had a FOID card or had a pending application at the time Highland Park police filed the clear and present danger form, analysts would have had to determine if there was a preponderance of evidence—a burden of proof that is met when it is determined that there is a greater than 50 percent chance the claim is true—to issue a clear and present danger determination.

Crimo had no previous criminal convictions on his adult record. His only conviction was for possession of tobacco by a minor when he was 16 years old. Under Illinois law, juvenile convictions are sealed.

Despite the two calls to Highland Park police including the suicide attempt and the threat of violence, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said there was no reason for Illinois State Police not to issue the FOID card. State police have said there was no report from a mental hospital

or provider that would have triggered a prohibitor.

And even though an unidentified resident of the family home claimed they were afraid to return to the home after the September 2019 call to the Highland Park Police, there was no order of protection.

Illinois also has a “red flag” law, officially the Firearm Restraining Order Act, which is usually pursued in circuit court in response to various actions, including brandishing of a firearm, threatened use of a firearm, and violation of an order of protection, among others.

While existing prohibitions on firearm possession are determined by an individual’s prior criminal or mental health history, firearm restraining orders are different because they are an immediate but temporary action.

Crimo’s FOID card application was one of more than 23,977 received by the Firearm Services Bureau in December 2019, and one of 309,176 received throughout the year. It was approved in January the following year.

In addition to the FOID background check, Crimo would have been subject to additional background checks through the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System when buying firearms. Crimo passed checks on June 9, 2020, July 18, 2020, July 31, 2020 and Sept. 20, 2021.

Police said Crimo has confessed to the shooting. He has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. He remains in jail with no bond pending trial.

Editor’s note: This is a classic Slices of Life column from October 2014.

Superman, Wonder Woman and the Incredible Hulk all possess superpowers, but I enjoy supremacy even greater than x-ray vision, unlimited strength or the ability to fly.

My capabilities come from grocery lists in my pocket and canned goods on aisle seven. It’s the power of food acquisition and I’ve assumed extreme control.

Those of us in the know know it doesn’t get any better than that.

Simply put, I do 97.376 percent of the grocery shopping for my family. Let the scope of that sink in for a moment. Pause and ponder like you might over the glazed donuts in the bakery section.

Victuals. Chow. Sustenance.

Edibles. Nourishment. Cuisine.

Food impacts the menu, mood, mind and mojo – and the person purchasing the food is in charge.

Not even Superman with his flowing red cape and tight blue tights can top that.

It’s absolute power at its finest.

If I want tacos for supper, we have tacos for supper. Yo quiero. Never mind they had tacos at school for lunch. To heck with that. Mom’s got a craving – for pizza or potato salad or potpie. It’s what’s for dinner.

It gets even better. I alone am in control of their entire cookie supply. Chocolate chip, frosted or oatmeal – I get to choose. Snack control is a commanding tool when in the hands of the skilled superhuman formerly known as mom.

For instance, three years ago I banished fruit snacks from the pantry, declaring them imposters – without membership in any food group. The young people living with me still beg for fruit snacks on occasion, but I’m holding fast.

Power trips can be exhilarating.

Speaking of power trips, I took two today. There’s another perk of my supremacy – multiple trips to the grocery store on any given Tuesday. This phenomenon occurs when an essential item is forgotten during the initial outing. Even superheroes have memory lapses.

Today I forgot dog treats and ice cream, which were egregious errors according to all four and two-legged inhabitants of my home. So I returned for round two of the hunger games. They are happy with me now. That isn’t always the case.

Like the time I went on a diet.

They lost 12 pounds between them during the first week; I was up two. I finally caved and bought some white bread and processed cheese spread. It took a couple days, but they warmed up to me eventually. Such is the price of super-heroism.

Sometimes one of them attempts to accompany me to the store. They’ve even tried stowing away in the backseat, but I’m smarter than a fifth grader – plus I have eyes in the back of my head. Having a sidekick acts like kryptonite to my superpowers and causes us to return home with extra cereal and corn chips. There can be only one superhero in the family – except if you are Batman.

I am not a complete mom of steel. I allow them to make food requests, which I may or may not fulfill. They’ll just have to wait and see. Anticipation can encourage a person to do superuncharacteristic and super-helpful things – like make the bed, pick up dirty clothes off the floor, empty the dishwasher, throw in a load of laundry or mow the lawn without being asked. All completed in the time it takes your mom to do the grocery shopping.

The power to influence them like that is nothing short of super – and I’m not even wearing my cape today.

Southern 2/3rds of Illinois could see controlled power outages this summer

As electricity demand across the Midwest climbs, the amount of power available to the grid servicing a large swath of Illinois has dipped, prompting regulators to warn of controlled outages during extreme summer weather.

Rolling blackouts or brownouts typically associated with Western states may be necessary in Illinois and other Midwest states in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) footprint. MISO is the regional electric grid operator that oversees power in 15 states, including the southern two-thirds of Illinois.

Several factors are contributing to the heightened risk, including some early generator retirements, changes to the generation resource mix and increased demand for electricity, Brandon Morris, MISO adviser-strategic communications, told FarmWeek.

The summer peak forecast is 124 gigawatts with 119 gigawatts of projected regularly available generation

within MISO. “Over the last several years, MISO has observed concurrent trends of increasing extreme weather events that strain the system and an evolving generation portfolio with a higher percentage of renewables that increases the complexity of managing the bulk electric grid,” Morris said.

“The reality for the zones that do not have sufficient generation to cover their load plus their required reserves is that they will have increased risk of temporary, controlled outages to maintain system reliability.”

MISO generally has access to significant energy imports from neighboring grid operators, and in emergency conditions MISO can also access additional resources including operating reserves, Morris added.

“But this year’s summer assessment and capacity auction reflect the potential for the tightest conditions we’ve experienced,” Morris said.

And that assessment has state Rep. Charlie Meier, R-Okawville, worried. Meier, who raises beef cattle, testified during a joint hearing between the Illinois House’s Public

Utilities and Energy & Environment committees last month, sharing his concerns, especially for farmers.

“If my power goes out and it was a very hot day, or a very cold day, we could lose our livestock. They wouldn’t have water. The heaters wouldn’t kick on. The fans wouldn’t kick on,” he said during the hearing.

Meier recently spent thousands on a new generator to ensure his livestock would be able to survive if he’s not home to flip the switch.

“We need a reliable baseload energy source,” Meier said. “I’m not against clean energy. We need to have a plan that’s focused on getting there before we’re shutting everything down.”

Aside from logistical issues on the farm during a power outage, Meier pointed out another concern: energy prices.

Timeline unclear for special session on abortion rights Lawmakers work on response to overturn of Roe v. Wade

Gov. JB Pritzker and top Democratic leaders in the Illinois General Assembly said July 5 that while they still plan to call a special session this year to strengthen abortion rights, they expect to take the “remainder of the summer” to craft policies before lawmakers return to the Capitol.

Pritzker first announced his plan for a special session on June 24, the same day the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion nationwide.

While the governor said at the time he would call the special session with

support from Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, he did not set a specific date for lawmakers to return. He said only he would call the session “in the coming weeks.”

In a joint statement July 5, the three leaders indicated the return to Springfield could come as late as the fall.

“In the coming weeks, as the ripples of the decision to overturn Roe are felt throughout the nation, we expect to get an acute sense of our needs and how Illinois can play an even more vital role in standing up for reproductive freedom,” the statement read.

“We plan to work closely together for

the remainder of the summer to assess every possibility of what we can do and convene a special session in the coming months.

Illinois already has among the most permissive laws in the country regarding abortion.

In 2019, Pritzker signed the sweeping Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares access to abortion services a “fundamental right” in Illinois.

And in December, he signed a law making it legal to perform an abortion on a minor without notifying the minor’s parents.

Illinois also allows public funding of abortion services for people

enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program, the result of a 2017 law signed by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican.

However, as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization, more restrictive laws have automatically taken effect through so-called “trigger laws” in some of Illinois’ neighboring states, including Missouri, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

That has led many to anticipate that Illinois could see a large influx of residents from those states coming to Illinois for abortion services.

During a June 30 interview with Capitol News Illinois, Pritzker sug-

gested one response might be to expand segments of the state’s health care workforce to take on greater demand.

“Again, this is about securing access, making sure we have capacity to handle the needs of people to get procedures,” he said. “We need hospital personnel, health care personnel.

Other states, for example, allow certain kinds of professionals to perform these procedures that Illinois doesn’t allow. So we’re going to look at expanding who can do the procedures.”

During that interview, Pritzker also said the state would not consider providing aid for out-of-state travel to Illinois for abortions.

Hi Villa Park calling, a concerned grandparent, for the safety of our children in schools. This concerns Willowbrook High School and the idea of propping open doors. I’ve spoken with the principal, I’ve spoken with the district, I even went to the police station.

The principal assured me he’s going to take care of it, although it continues to go on. I hope we don’t have a tragedy here in Villa Park before we take this seriously. Is it going on at the other schools? I don’t know. But propping doors open is not the answer. We don’t need to make it easy for people to get in there. Thank you.

Your comments were forwarded to District 88 officials, who responded: “At District 88 and Willowbrook High School, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our No. 1 priority. We couldn’t agree more with this Speak Out comment that the security of our building is critical. We continue to follow best practices with school safety initiatives, and those efforts are always at the forefront of our work.

“Our procedures prohibit keeping doors propped open. It is an expectation that if a door is open, it is for a limited time, and the area is supervised by a staff member. Any violation is handled and quickly corrected. During the school year, only two doors (which are monitored) are used as an entrance/exit, to help ensure the security of the campus.

“Other steps we take to maintain a secure and caring home at District 88 include: “1. Fostering a welcoming environment and establishing relationships with our students, staff, parents/guardians and community members to create a culture where they feel comfortable communicating with us. JAC *** Breaking news, at least right now: The father of this kid that allegedly killed seven people on July 4 signed for the FOID card for his son because he was not old enough. He signed to take responsibility for his son; now he needs to go to jail also! And every other parent or guardian who signs for a certificate allowing their kid to kill people with the guns they will purchase. We must put an end to automatic guns of all types. It can be done. Stop producing the ammunition and then it will only be available on the black market, but at least it will be much harder— and illegal—to get! *** Too bad Illinois doesn’t have the death penalty anymore. If he’s convicted, keeping the scumbag who admitted to the Fourth of July shootings in Highland Park in prison for the rest of his life would be a waste of taxpayer dollars. *** For many years, the left has relied on the Supreme Court to rule on issues that it couldn’t get passed through Congress, state legislatures or by referendum. Now the left is going ballistic because the court has overturned Roe v. Wade and sent abortion back to the states to decide—something the court should have done 50 years ago. Because their side lost, leftist politicians now want to expand the Supreme Court. They now say the court is illegitimate and they want justices that supposedly lied during their confirmation hearings to be impeached. They whine about how this is, quote, “A threat to our democracy.” Our democracy isn’t ruled by poll numbers, or by which side can assemble mass demonstrations, shout the loudest or intimidate those who oppose them. Our democracy is a democratic constitutional representative republic with checks and balances and three separate but equal branches of government—legislative, executive and judicial. The left might consider using the legislative branch more often instead of putting all their eggs in the judicial branch. *** Someone two weeks ago commented about Democrats in jail. You need to check Illinois and federal history; there are plenty of Republican elected officials in our jails too. And for those who think the Jan 6 hearings are a waste of time and money, these hearings need to expose all those who actually want to end our democracy. If they are not stopped and convicted this will happen again, and you should know you

would not like to live in a dictatorship.

Our government will never be perfect, but it is running the greatest country the world has ever known, and the country which is keeping the rest of the world as stable as possible. Before Trump was elected, he is on film saying he wanted to be king—I guess he meant it! *** As sad and tragic and heartbreaking as the Highland Park shootings are, this type of carnage happens almost every weekend in Chicago. I don’t remember JB Pritzker ever having a press conference in either the West Garfield or Englewood neighborhoods and being furious and angry over the deaths that happen in Chicago like he was after the Highland Park shootings. Just saying. *** Not unexpectedly, it didn’t take long for the Highland Park shootings to become political fodder. Gov. Pritzker was Johnny-on-the-spot to weigh in.

OK fine, but instead of simply saying his thoughts and prayers were with all affected, he had to focus on the weapon used, even before all the facts were in. While I support the Second Amendment, I do not think people need to own an assault rifle unless they are waiting for the zombie apocalypse.

However, as many of the pundits have pointed out, it is time to focus on who is using them. “It’s not the guns, it’s your sons,” pointed out one radio commentator. Many of the mass shooters purchased these firearms legally, so unless gun manufacturers stop making assault rifles altogether, and all the assault weapons out there are rounded up and destroyed, someone intent on causing mass destruction will find a way to get one. *** I am so tired of hearing “my body, my choice” as a rationale to justify abortion. In most cases, the choice was theirs before conception, and to say “I’m not ready to be a parent,” “It doesn’t fit in with my lifestyle” or “I

can’t afford another child” is not a valid excuse. This is not a tumor to be removed. I have no issue with abortions for rape or incest, and certainly respect a parent’s decision either way if a fetus is determined to be severely disabled. Having said all that, I think the Supreme Court was right to hand this matter over to the states. So, focus your protests to the state level, although in Illinois, that is moot. We will become the abortion hub of the Midwest, and much of it at taxpayers’ expense. *** I would like to speak out about the senior freeze for Illinois property taxes. Right now it stands at a maximum of $65,000. You can make $65,000 or under to get the senior freeze on your property tax. This freezes the value of your home for taxes. I have tried to reach out to the governor, Illinois senators and representatives to get this increased as other states have a higher limit. But of course, I never get a response back. With the cost of living and increase in minimum wage, we need this amount increased for seniors.

Seniors want to stay in their homes.

Let’s get some help here! *** It seems like the rest of the world is controlling the future of America because we have become a symbolic ship without a rudder. The government’s goals are abstract and personal. The present administration is determined to control our personal lives with little regard for the big picture. *** Regarding Roe versus Wade, to me, it’s plain and simple: Why can’t prochoice choose one of the many contraceptives there are on the market instead of killing the fetus? Thank you. *** Has anybody been watching the news for the City of Chicago and all these teenagers and stuff like that? You know, Chicago needs to bring the military in because apparently they don’t know what they’re doing in the police

department and the mayor’s office.

Second of all, make these kids responsible for whatever actions they do. And if they’re between the ages of 16 and 18, make the parents responsible, make the parents pay for the damages, make the parents pay for everything. And if they’re over 18 then make them pay.

If they don’t have a job, but they’ve got a car, then take the car away from them. Sell it, because if we don’t start teaching these teenagers now common decency, common courtesy, common respect, our United States is in trouble. Something has to be done because what they’re doing now isn’t working.

So now it’s time for drastic measures.

Take the parents, make them responsible for their own kids; if they raise their kids right, it will be no problem. If they raise their kids wrong, then they have to pay. Thank you. *** This week’s truism. A politician is concerned about the next election and a patriot is concerned about the future of the country. *** According to a recent Gallup poll, a declining proportion of the overall American population, now 20 percent, believes the Bible is literally true word for word. About half believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, but not everything in it should be taken literally, while almost three in 10 say the Bible is an ancient book of fables and history.

Belief in a literal Bible is declining— part of a general pattern of declining religiosity among the adult American population. I wonder if this has any relationship to the attitudes and events that we often experience in our culture. *** A lot of smart young Illinois and other blue-state adults are moving to Tennessee, Texas, Florida and other conservative red states for a more secure and bright future to live the American dream. Who is going to carry the older people left behind for Illinois’ future?
