Woman freed on plea deal after serving 19 years for McHenry murder Her murder charge was vacated with help from Illinois Innocence Project

A woman found guilty of a McHenry County murder recently had her conviction vacated after serving 19 years of her 27-year sentence and maintaining her innocence throughout her imprisonment.

With the help of the lawyers from the Illinois Innocence Project, Jennifer McMullan was released from

prison June 16 as a result of a plea agreement entered in McHenry County court.

McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally’s plea deal to grant McMullan’s release and vacate her murder conviction depended on if she agreed to plead guilty to an armed robbery charge in the case.

Stephanie Kamel, one of McMullan’s attorneys at IIP, said her client faced an extremely difficult decision of whether to accept a plea to a lesser charge or remain wrongfully imprisoned for years to come.

“Driving her decision was her father, whose health is deteriorating rapidly due to Alzheimer’s dis-

ease,” Kamel said in a news release.

“While we would like to have seen Jennifer’s conviction vacated with no plea agreement required, we are glad she is finally free and reunited with her family after an almost 20year absence.”

McMullan was one of four people—along with Kenneth Smith, David Collett and Justin Houghtaling—who were arrested for carrying out the attempted robbery and fatal shooting of Raul Briseno at a McHenry restaurant in March 2001.

McMullan’s release comes less than two months after a federal appeals court released Smith from prison and vacated his murder conviction, overruling prior Illinois state courts’ decisions in his case.

The convictions of McMullan and Smith were based on Houghtaling’s confession to police days after the murder. Houghtaling, who confessed in exchange for a lesser sentence, later recanted his confession.

He initially claimed that he and Smith robbed the restaurant while McMullan and Collett waited in the getaway car.

Houghtaling pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 20 years in exchange for testifying against the others. Collett also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years.

Kenneally said in a statement that he disagrees with the opinion that overrules the decisions of three separate McHenry County juries.

“We are increasingly distressed at the recent trend of remote judges, years and decades later, elevating their own judgments of selectively considered evidence and witness credibility over those of ordinary citizens to reach preferred case outcomes,” Kenneally said in the statement.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision that no rational jury could convict Smith forecloses the immediate possibility for Kenneally to put Smith on trial for a fourth time.

Kenneally said his office is reviewing its legal options and determining whether to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Smith’s first conviction was overturned on appeal, resulting in a second trial in 2008 where he was found guilty but his conviction at the second trial was also overturned.

He was convicted again at his third trial in 2012 and sentenced to 67 years in prison, but the conviction was yet again tossed out on appeal. The federal appeals court’s decision in April was a result of Smith’s appeal of his third conviction.

Attorneys for Smith and McMullan argued that the police overlooked credible confessions from members of the DeCicco group that contained details about the crime that police withheld from the public.

Specifically, the police withheld the fact that Briseno suffered a head wound consistent with being hit with a gun, and that Briseno had yelled to a passing car to call the police after he chased the two masked robbers from the restaurant.

The federal appeals court’s opinion admonished the Illinois court for being “not just wrong, but unreasonable,” in upholding Smith’s conviction, despite Houghtaling’s recanted confession that was “riddled with holes” and evidence corroborating the DeCicco group’s confessions.

Faith-based child welfare controversy may be reignited in Illinois U.S. Supreme Court limits scope of antidiscrimination rules

A recent U.S. Supreme Court decision could reignite a 10-year-old controversy in Illinois over whether faith-based charities can be prohibited from contracting with the state for foster care and adoption services on the grounds that they refuse to work with unmarried or same-sex couples.

In a 9-0 decision June 24, the nation’s high court ruled against the city of Philadelphia, which had refused to renew a contract for foster care services with Catholic Social Services, arguing that the churchbased agency’s refusal to place children in the homes of unmarried and same-sex couples violated a non-discrimination clause in the agency’s contract with the city.

Illinois went through a similar controversy in 2011, shortly after the state legalized civil unions among same-sex couples, when the Department of Children and Family Services refused to renew a contract with Catholic Charities of Illinois over a similar policy.

At that time, however, a circuit

court judge in Sangamon County sided with the state and dismissed a lawsuit brought by Catholic Charities.

“For us here in Illinois, had this decision been on the books when the state of Illinois did what it did back in 2011, the Catholic Charities would have been continuing in foster care,” said Peter Breen, vice president and general counsel for the Chicago-based Thomas More Society, which intervened in the case.

“And we wouldn’t have had to suffer through the last 10 years of DCFS incompetence, which has harmed so many children, because you would have had your best performing foster care providers continuing the work they had been doing for a century or more,” he added.

In the Supreme Court case, Fulton v. Philadelphia, the court faced an almost identical question—whether the non-discrimination clause in the contract violated Catholic Social Services’ First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion.

In this case, the court ruled that it did, but the justices decided that issue on narrow grounds that some legal experts say only applies to the city of Philadelphia.

Normally, the court would uphold the right of a state or local govern-

ment to enact a requirement that might burden the free exercise of religion as long as the rule is both neutral and generally applicable to all individuals and groups, regardless of religious affiliation. That standard comes from a 1990 Supreme Court case involving the Oregon Division of Employment Security.

But in Philadelphia’s case, the justices said, the rule is not generally applicable because the contract contains a clause allowing for exceptions to be made “at the sole discretion of the Commissioner” of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services.

“No matter the level of deference we extend to the City, the inclusion of a formal system of entirely discretionary exceptions ... renders the contractual non-discrimination requirement not generally applicable,” the court wrote.

Ed Yohnka, director of communications and public policy for the ACLU of Illinois, said that distinction makes the Philadelphia case markedly different from the 2011 case in Illinois.

will try to reestablish itself with state contracts for child welfare services anytime soon because, when the Sangamon County court ruled against them in 2011, they essentially dismantled their services while their staff went to other outside agencies.

“Restarting foster care would not be a small task for any entity, starting from scratch,” he said.

Yohnka, at the ACLU of Illinois, meanwhile, said he couldn’t predict whether the Philadelphia case would reopen another chapter of litigation in Illinois. But he said he thinks it would be wrong for the state to revisit the issue.

“I think what’s interesting, or what’s lost in this is that there was just that recent report by the auditor general, that found DCFS and its partner agencies were failing to serve LGBTQ kids across the state, really, to the point of just not having any kind of capacity to really even identify, provide services, provide spaces and homes for them to live in where they could be affirmed,” he said. “And I think the idea of going backward in terms of allowing for gay or lesbian couples to be discriminated against in foster care or adoption really feels like a gigantic mistake in the context of what we already know.”

with all of Illinois’ non-discrimination laws,” he said. “They didn’t pick and choose on the basis of what the objection was on the part of a particular service provider.”

Although the Supreme Court’s decision last week was unanimous, four of the justices—Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas—signed on to concurring opinions saying they would have gone even further by agreeing to review, if not strike down, the standard set in the 1990 Oregon case.

A fifth justice, Stephen Breyer, who is often seen as a swing vote on the court, also signed on to one of the concurring opinions, except for a paragraph saying the Oregon standard likely should be overturned.

“This decision is the latest in a string of decisions that have come out from the Supreme Court in the last few years respecting the rights of people of faith to participate in public life,” Breen said. “And the trend is clearly in favor of construing the Constitution to protect religious individuals and entities from the heavy hand of government.”

But Breen said it is unlikely that Catholic Charities in Illinois—which are operated by the four archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the state—

District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente provided an update during last week’s District 88 Board of Education meeting about preparations for the upcoming 2021-22 school year.

Barbanente noted during the June 21 meeting that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has passed a resolution approving a return to a traditional school schedule—featuring five full days per week of in-person learning—in the 2021-22 school year.

The first day of classes in District 88’s 2021-22 school year will be Wednesday, Aug. 18.

The last two school years at District 88, and virtually every other school district in the state, have been drastically altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the state’s K-12 schools were closed to in-person instruction during the last several weeks of the 2019-20 school year.

Most of District 88’s 2020-21 school year featured fully remote instruction. In April of this year, some students returned to in-person instruction at the district’s two schools—Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School. The District 88 students who returned to in-person instruction in April attended their schools in person four days a week.

Barbanente stated during last week’s meeting that the ISBE has not yet issued the Phase 5 guidance for the state’s schools. The entire state is currently in Phase 5 of Illinois’ COVID-19 mitigation plan.

“We have bits and pieces of what’s going to be required,” Barbanente said. “We are really pretty desperate to get more details from the state board at this point.”

Barbanente said that she joined other school superintendents in Illinois to craft a letter to petition the state board of education and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to finalize guidance for schools, specifically related to mask mandates and social distancing policies.

Barbanente added that the state agencies are pushing for unvaccinated school staff members and eligible students to get vaccinations against the COVID-19 coronavirus. She said the district has hosted four vaccination clinics, and that all District 88 students and staff members have had the chance to get vaccinated. She said that getting the vaccine is ultimately a choice for families and students.

is not requiring its families or staff members to disclose their vaccination records. She stated that while the district is waiting for guidance on policies for the upcoming school year, vaccinated students who attend the district’s sports camps this summer will not need to wear masks for indoor or outdoor activities.

Barbanente also said that the District 88 administration doesn’t believe it needs a COVID-19 testing program, such as a saliva testing program, in place during the upcoming school year.

Ed Hoster, the district’s chief financial officer, noted during last week’s board meeting that the district has upgraded the air filters in its buildings since the start of the pandemic. He stated that the district has doubled the outdoor intake of fresh air to its air handling units, increasing the amount of fresh air from the previous standard of 10 percent to a

minimum of 20 percent circulating throughout its buildings.

Barbanente referred during the board meeting to an ISBE survey that stated parents are not excessively concerned with the transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus through contact with surfaces.

Barbanente told board members last week that the district is not required to offer hybrid or remote learning during the upcoming school year, except for students who meet both of the following criteria: (1) they are unable to be vaccinated and (2) they are under a quarantine order.

While districts aren’t required to offer remote instruction during the upcoming school year, they can offer it if they choose. District 88 has been working on a pilot program to establish a virtual academy for students in grades 10-12 this fall.

tant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, told board members last week that students who enroll in the virtual academy at the start of the school year could opt out at the end of the first semester. The virtual academy will not offer a hybrid environment. Students taking part in the virtual academy will be able to come to their schools to take part in extracurricular activities.

Responding to a board member’s question about the number of students who are intending to participate in the district’s virtual academy at the start of the 2021-22 school year, Tsagalis said that there were currently 41 students planning to take part in the pilot program. Of that total, 25 were Willowbrook students, while 16 were Addison Trail students. Of the 41 students, 16 are incoming seniors, while 14 are incoming juniors and 11 are about to begin their sophomore year.

Kiwanis Club’s Summer Concert Series begins July 7

Free series features four Wednesday-night concerts at the Rugaard Gazebo

The Kiwanis Club of Villa Park’s free Summer Concert Series is returning in 2021. The concert series was canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s series features four concerts each Wednesday evening in July.

The concerts will take place at the Rugaard Gazebo, located along the Illinois Prairie Path, just west of Ardmore Avenue. Each concert will be-

gin at 6:30 p.m. and run for about 90 minutes. The concession stand will open at 6 p.m. on the evening of each concert. The concession stand will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, popcorn, soft drinks and more.

The July 7 concert will feature the Ethan Bell Band, a Nashville-based group that plays mash-ups of pop, hip-hop and country songs.

Fitch upgrades Illinois’ credit outlook to ‘positive’ Rating agency cites economic recovery, improved budget picture

Fitch Ratings, one of three credit rating agencies that grade Illinois bonds, has upgraded its credit outlook for the state from “negative” to “positive.”

BBB-, the agency said the state’s economic outlook coming out of the pandemic, combined with the recently enacted budget, are moving the state in the right direction.

“The Outlook Revision to Positive from Negative, reflects Illinois’ preservation of fiscal resilience given the quick and sustained

economic recovery since the start of the pandemic, coupled with the state’s unwinding of certain nonrecurring fiscal measures,” the agency said in a statement. “Recent fiscal results and the enacted fiscal 2022 budget suggest further improvements in operating performance and structural balance in the near and medium-term that could support a return to the pre-pandemic rating or higher.”

The change in outlook is not the same as a change in the state’s immediate credit worthiness, but instead reflects the agency’s view of its credit trajectory, indicating the possibility of a credit upgrade in the future.

Pain with a purpose

When I was pregnant, I anticipated the birth of my precious babies, but I dreaded the pain of the actual experience. Hey, I’m human.

But I came to terms with the idea of “labor pains” because I understood the end game. Pregnancy, labor and the physical pain of giving birth, they all lead to a very desired outcome: a beautiful baby – a brand-new life.

It is nothing short of a miracle and certainly worth the sacrifice and effort needed to get to the end game of 10 fingers and 10 toes.

So, even though I dreaded the pains of labor, I welcomed them. I called them “pain with a purpose.” Because although the pain was real, it came with a purposeful outcome - a human being. I welcomed this pain with a purpose. I embraced it. I anticipated it with wonder and awe.

I was fortunate to experience this pain on four different occasions. Each time it changed my life for the better.

Pain comes into our life for a reason. Sometimes it’s to deliver a baby. At other times it’s in the wake of grief.

Recently I’ve experienced this second type of pain.

Like giving birth, it’s hard to describe or imagine unless you’ve been there.

At first grief felt empty. It still does, sometimes. But I’ve come to believe that, like giving birth, grief can be pain with a purpose - if we allow it to be.

Hardships in life come with opportunity. Bear with me. I speak from experience.

Hardships, pain, grief - they provide for a new perspective. The old reality exists no more. It is gone.

That can be extremely difficult, but it also comes with a new horizon.

The future has changed, but change doesn’t have to be completely devastating. What you had planned is gone but other futures lie before you, if you are willing to accept and embrace them.

Embrace them.

Grief provides an opportunity for growth. In faith. In existence. In being. For me, it’s provided a new outlook on life beyond life. Most of us

JB Pritzker, quickly seized on the news “Fitch’s improved outlook for Illinois is yet another sign of positive momentum for our state’s fiscal condition, a testament to strong financial management and responsible actions by the General Assembly and my administration, and a product of the state’s economic resilience,” Pritzker said in a statement. “The story of Illinois in 2021 is that in the face of a crisis, fiscal discipline and smart economic policy pays off.”

House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, called the revised outlook “proof we can support families, invest in underserved communities, and be fiscally prudent at the same time,” while Comptroller Susana Mendoza said the move “vindicates” her office’s effort to pay down the state’s bill backlog.

“My administration has been committed and vocal about the need to show fiscal discipline and accountability,” Mendoza said in a statement. “Fitch notes the responsible approach we have taken with the General Assembly and the Governor’s office to target better-than-expected revenues to paying down debt.”

In its announcement, Fitch listed a number of things Illinois could do that might lead to a credit upgrade.

Those include continuing to pay down the bill backlog, continuing the recent pattern of passing balanced budgets on time and narrowing what Fitch called a “structural budget gap” by matching recurring revenues with recurring expenses, including funding its pension ob-

ligations at actuarially determined levels.

Recent budgets have included the pension payments required by statute that are otherwise short of the actuarially determined payments that would prevent the state’s unfunded liability from increasing.

The state’s statutory pension payment, which it made in full for the upcoming fiscal year, was about $9.8 billion, or 23 percent of the state’s General Revenue Fund budget for the year.

However, the agency also noted factors that could lead to a credit downgrade, such as failing to follow through on plans for early retirement of federal pandemic loans and repayment of interfund borrowing, or using one-time federal aid for recurring expenses in the future.

Meanwhile, Fitch said, Build Illinois bonds continue to be rated BBB+, a slightly higher rating than the state’s general obligation bond rating.

Carol Knowles, a spokesperson for the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, said in an email June 25 that Build Illinois was a program created by former Governor James R. Thompson in the1980s and the bonds still sold by the state today.

“Fitch was distinguishing between General Obligation (GO) bonds and Build Illinois (BI) bonds.

GO bonds are secured by general tax revenues and guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the state. BI bonds are direct, limited obligations of the state, secured by an irrevocable first-priority pledge on moneys in the Build Illinois Bond Retirement and Interest Fund,” Knowles said in an email.

Juvenile charged with stealing car at gunpoint during test drive Alleged incident took place in Crestview Park On Wednesday, June 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that Judge Brian Jacobs had ordered that a 17-year-old Lynwood juvenile accused of stealing a vehicle at gunpoint will be detained until at least his next court appearance.

The juvenile has been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony) and two counts of Armed Robbery (Class X Felony).

On Tuesday, June 8, the juvenile and another individual responded to an ad on ‘OfferUP’ in regard to purchasing a vehicle they saw on the site.

The victim allegedly met the juvenile and his accomplice at Crestview Park located at 245 E. Crestview Avenue in Elmhurst. It is alleged that after briefly looking at the vehicle, the juvenile and his accomplice requested a test drive.

It is alleged that during the test drive, the juvenile sat in the right rear passenger seat directly behind the victim and the juvenile’s accomplice drove.

After traveling a short distance, the juvenile allegedly pulled out a handgun, placed it to the victim’s left temple and said, “Do not do anything stupid or I’ll shoot.” The offenders allegedly patted down the victim and took his wallet, phone and keys before ordering him out of the car.

Once out of the vehicle, the victim flagged down a passing car and used the driver’s phone to call 9-1-1. An investigation conducted by the Elmhurst

A complainant in the 2000 block of Ovaltine reported at 6:19 p.m. that an unknown suspect removed a flag from their front door and burned it.

“I applaud the efforts of our evidence technicians and personnel who did an outstanding job which ultimately led to the identification and apprehension of the suspect in this case,” Chief Ruth added. “I would also like to thank the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their legal guidance.”

The juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 30, 2021, in front of Judge Jacobs.

Prior to the officers’ arrival, an individual, later identified as the juvenile, exited the passenger side of a vehicle parked in front of the store and began firing shots at another vehicle parked at one of the gas pumps, striking a vehicle six times.

After firing, the juvenile reentered the passenger’s side of the vehicle in which

he arrived and continued to shoot at the vehicle as his vehicle drove through the gas station parking lot before leaving the scene. An investigation into the incident led authorities to the juvenile as a suspect. The investigation also showed that the juvenile fired a total of sixteen shots. On May 6, 2021, the juvenile was arrested and taken into custody in Kane County on unrelated charges.

A chance encounter ignites artist’s creative spark Taiwo Owoniyi shares experience at Addison Library’s creative studio Addison resident Taiwo Owoniyi is always working on something, whether it’s his art, his music, or his job as a CNA. But when he has the chance, he seeks out the library.

“Most of the time, if I’m sitting at home, I have to do all the things that need to be done, but not what I want to do,” he said. “The library always comes to my mind as a place of inspiration.

This is the painting entitled “When the World Sleeps,” created by Addison resident Taiwo Owoniyi, an artist who discovered new-found inspiration when he stumbled into an art class at the Addison Public Library’s Creative Studio.

A place that you go to acquire some knowledge and wisdom.

“You know that when you come to the library, everybody has something to gain.”

On his library visits, Owoniyi enjoys reading or browsing for new ideas in the stacks. One day in late 2019, he got much more inspiration than he had been expecting when he stumbled upon an art class being held in the library’s Creative Studio.

“I usually come to the library, not for painting or for art, but on this fateful day, I said ‘Okay, there’s a little class going on, let me peek and see what’s going on, just to see,’” he said.

Owoniyi arrived just in time for the class to start and was swiftly welcomed inside. The instructor set him up with a canvas, paint brush and acrylic paints, then gave the first set of directions to the class: first the horizon, then the sky, then the landscape.

“When I’m painting, I can close my eyes and imagine what I’m going to paint,” he said. “So I used my own imagination to paint the tree and painted it in my own way, giving it some movement. When [the instructor] came back around, she said ‘You’re an artist!’ and I said ‘No, I’m just listening to what you’re saying.’

“Later she came back, saw my work and said, ‘You must be an artist,’ and I said ‘Yes, but I’m just trying to express myself, not show off.’”

Soon, Owoniyi’s skill was impossible to hide when the instructor asked each student to put their work on display.

“At end of class, she put [my canvas] in line with the rest and said, ‘We have

an artist here.’”

While no stranger to oil paint, ink, and pastel, Owoniyi had never painted with acrylic paints before taking the library’s class. Experimenting with a new medium inspired him to jump back into painting, which he had put aside during his time working in a printing house and doing graphic design work.

“The last time I painted had been maybe seven years ago, so after what I did in that class, it really motivated me to move back to painting,” he said.

“When I left the class, I went to the art shop and got some oil paint, canvas, frames, and started practicing.”

Owoniyi’s painting ‘When the World Sleeps’ A few months later, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, but Owoniyi never stopped painting. He set up a studio in his home and even joined three local art leagues—Naperville Art League, La Grange Art League, DuPage Art League—to practice even more. In May 2021, Owoniyi brought a painting he made for the Naperville Art League to the library and told his story about the class that inspired him to start painting again. The piece he showed to library staff is called “When the World Sleeps” and shows an eclipse of the moon.

“When the eclipse comes, the world becomes so dark,” he explained. “I imagine that even the moon closes its eyes to sleep. When the moon sleeps, everything sleeps.”

Anytime he isn’t painting, Owoniyi is working on his music. As a gospel musician, he has released an album and a number of songs through his enter-

“Before the pandemic I was writing this song about Jesus calling everybody back home to accept him,” he said.

“I was thinking that I’d like to send a message to everybody, not just people who can speak English. We have a lot of Spanish speakers [in the Addison area] and I don’t speak Spanish, so I thought music would be one way to reach out to everyone.”

verse and soon connected with adult services associate María del Carmen Cifuentes, who helped him translate his lyrics.

“Tai would regularly come to work at the library, and I met him after he asked at the desk if someone could get some help him with Spanish for a project,” said Cifuentes. “He explained he was translating on a song verse he had written. We worked on some of the phrasing based on the rhythm of his music and worked on the pronunciation. I enjoyed learning about Tai’s creative process as well while we worked together.”

While his bilingual gospel song is being saved for a future recording, Owoniyi is excited about the project and glad for the help he received from Cifuentes.

“Sometimes I sang the song the way it was supposed to be, and she was able to sing it back, in Spanish, which really helped,” he said. “If she didn’t sing it out, there’s no way I’d be able to get the song word-for-word. She really helped me out.”

It’s all thanks to the library Cifuentes, too, was glad to have connected with Owoniyi to help with his song translation and hopes the community finds their own creative spark at the library as well.

“He reconnected with his love of art through our Creative Studio and he’s now sharing his talent with the community,” said Cifuentes. “I hope hearing Tai’s story will encourage the community to explore all the library has to offer. They may just find inspiration for their next creation or the start of new learning experience.”

Advice to others seeking inspiration And what advice does Owoniyi have for fellow artists who may be struggling to find their spark?

“You can’t give up on what you learn,” he said. “I’m the kind of person that when I start something, I don’t want to let it go. I just want to see it to the end and see what it’s going to be.

“Whatever your passion is, make it happen. Have the determination to do what you love to do. You don’t give up on your talent, your gift. Never give up.”

Mariners beat the rain

The Villa Park Mariners swam in Saturday’s virtual competition at Jefferson Pool. The Mariners’ regular-season meets in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference are normally dual meets between two teams competing at the same pool. This year’s meets are virtual events, with each team swimming at its home pool. Each team’s results are eventually scored against two other conference teams. The Mariners finished Saturday morning’s meet just before the arrival of heavy rain showers. The Willowbrook High School Athletic Booster Club recently held its annual Senior Athletic Celebration. Several members of Willowbrook’s Class of 2021 received awards and scholarships during the May 24 event, which was held in the school’s main gymnasium. One of the honored students was Gwen Halik (right), who received the Villa Park Warriors Scholarship. Halik is pictured with Charlie Marrese (left), the president of the Villa Park Warriors Youth Football and Cheer program. Halik cheered for the Villa Park Warriors for four years and was a junior coach for the program for two years. She was a four-year member of Willowbrook’s varsity cheer squad. She was also a four-year member of Willowbrook’s softball program and marching band. Additionally, Halik was selected to the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society, and Willowbrook’s social studies honor society—Civitas. Halik was a member of Best Buddies, Varsity Club and New Beginnings. She was also a junior coach of Jefferson Middle School’s cheer squad. Halik will attend DePaul University, where she will major in exercise science. She will also continue her cheer career as a member of DePaul’s cheer squad.

Choosing the right diet isn’t easy.

A friend may have had success on the low carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic (keto) diet, but the latest headlining celebrity might swear by something different.

The perfect diet depends on the goal, from simply eating more nutritious meals to losing weight.

Here’s a breakdown of six common diets: • Gluten-free diet. A small percentage of people need to be gluten-free because they have a gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy or have celiac disease.

A gluten-free diet eliminates all foods containing or contaminated with gluten, which is found in breads, pastas, cereal, sauces and beer. People who start eating gluten-free processed food often gain weight due to the wide selection of gluten-free snacks such as cookies and crackers.

These snacks can be as high or higher in carbohydrates and calories than gluten-containing products.

The breakdown: A gluten-free diet is not nutritionally superior to a diet containing gluten but may be beneficial to those with a gluten intolerance. It is essential for those with celiac disease.

• Intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is the opposite of many types of diets. Instead of focusing on what to eat, intermittent fasting is about when you should eat.

When fasting, all meals are scheduled within a certain time frame.

The 16/8 intermittent fasting method involves fasting for sixteen hours and eating all your meals during an 8-hour window.

The breakdown: By eating fewer, more fulfilling meals, intermittent fasting can lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake, resulting in weight loss and improving hormonal regulation. It is recommended that the fasting hours of the day be in the evening versus the morning. Due to

the prolonged period without food, intermittent fasting is not recommended for those with hypoglycemia or Type 1 diabetes.

• Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet had been around for decades when an American researcher discovered that foods eaten by people who lived around the Mediterranean Sea helped protect them against heart disease.

There isn’t one set meal plan on the Mediterranean diet. This cultural style of eating consists of fruits and vegetables, healthy grains, fish, beans, nuts, olive oil and small amounts of meat and dairy. Emphasis is placed on eating plant-based foods with limited amounts of animal foods, all while encouraging exercise and enjoying meals with others.

The breakdown: Instead of calorie counting, this style of eating emphasizes foods found in the regions by the Mediterranean Sea, including Greece, Italy and Spain. The American Heart Association endorsed the Mediterranean diet as a way of pre-
