Domeracki named CFO by District 88 Former director of business services to succeed retiring Hoster in 2023

During its June 20 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to appoint District 88 director of business services Ryan Domeracki as chief financial officer (CFO), effective July 1, 2023. Domeracki will succeed CFO Ed Hoster, who will retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

Hoster joined the District 88 family in 2013 with a wealth of experience as business manager at Argo Community High School District 217, assistant superintendent for business/treasurer at Hinsdale Township High School District 86 and coordinator of business services at Glenbard Township High School District 87. District 88 is grateful for Hoster’s leadership and contributions to ensure stable and transparent fiscal management, and the district wishes him well in retirement.

It is the priority of the Board of Education and administration to maintain the stability of the business office and continue the district’s tradition of student-centered, equitable support of educational programs, as well as a high level of customer service. To ensure the district has a seamless transition in the Business Office, the Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation to name Domeracki as assistant chief financial officer for the 2022-23 school year. The district will work to fill the director of business services position this fall.

we’ve established and continue to be a good steward of the district’s resources,” Domeracki said. “I plan to ensure we sustain our strong financial ratings, including AA1 from Moody’s and the highest level of recognition for the financial rating from the Illinois State Board of Education. I will be transparent with stakeholders and explain the complexities of our budget in a way that helps them understand our finances, as well as the ‘how and why’ behind our decisions.”

Domeracki said he looks forward to working with the district and community to address future challenges such as balancing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and increasing costs of materials and services, filling vacancies within the district and maintaining programming that’s currently being funded by

the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ARP ESSER) Fund. Another goal Domeracki is looking to accomplish is developing multi-year plans for various areas of the district, similar to the district’s five-year facility plan, to be as fiscally prepared and responsible as possible.

Domeracki has served as director of business services for four years, where he has worked closely with accounts receivable and payable, student transportation, the National School Lunch Program, building operations and safety procedures/trainings. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Illinois University and his master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University. He also received his Chief School Business Official certification from Northern Illinois University. Prior to coming to District 88, Domeracki was the assistant director of finance & operations for North Chicago Community Unit School District 187 and an operations manager with Aon Hewitt.

“Domeracki’s professionalism, attention to detail, work ethic and passion for the district make him an ideal candidate for this role,” said District 88 superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente.

“We have every confidence Domeracki will continue to be a tremendous asset to the district, and we look forward to all he will bring to these new roles.”

Domeracki said District 88 is a special school district, and he’s excited for

his new position.

“Our student and staff demographics are multifaceted, and everyone is on his or her personal journey and comes from all walks of life,” he said.

“It’s a very welcoming environment, and everyone is valued and respected.”

Domeracki lives in McHenry with his wife, Amanda, and their three children, William, Charlotte and Margaret.

Registration now open to vaccinate kids 6 months and younger The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has announced that registration is now open for the COVID-19 vaccine for children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years.

A federal judge in Chicago handed down a one-year prison sentence last week for a former state senator who once chaired the Senate Labor Committee.

Tom Cullerton, Tom Cullerton a Villa Park Democrat, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of embezzlement for receiving salary and benefits from Teamsters Joint Council 25 as a purported union organizer even though he admitted to doing little or no work for the union.

Cullerton, 52, was first elected to the General Assembly in 2012 to represent the 23rd District, which at that time spanned a portion of northern DuPage County. He had previously worked as a truck driver and was a member of a local Teamsters union.

Before being elected to the Illinois State Legislature, Cullerton spent eight years on the Villa Park Village Board. He was elected to the board as a village trustee in 2005. In the spring of 2009, he was elected to a four-year term as Villa Park’s village president. Cullerton was first elected to the state senate near the end of his term as village president.

In March 2013, shortly after being sworn into office, he was given a job at Teamsters Joint Council 25 and he remained on the payroll until February 2016.

In addition to receiving a salary, monthly car and telephone allowances and bonuses, prosecutors said,

Teamsters Joint Council 25 also funded Cullerton’s health and pension benefits through Teamsters Local Union 734, all totaling $248,828.

Cullerton was indicted in August 2019 on 40 counts of embezzlement.

But he maintained his innocence and continued to serve in the Senate, although he was stripped of his chairmanship of the Labor Committee.

In March of this year, however, he entered a plea agreement with federal prosecutors in which he admitted to one count of embezzlement. He then resigned his Senate seat and was replaced by former state Rep. Diane Pappas, who is not running for a full term in that office.

In addition to his prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman also ordered Cullerton to repay the union $223,828, an amount that reflected the fact that he had previously made a $25,000 restitution payment. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed not to seek forfeiture of his Villa Park residence Prosecutors initially asked for an 18-month sentence, which they said would reflect the seriousness of the crime.

In a court filing earlier this month, they noted that after Cullerton lost his job at Teamsters Joint Council 25, he took another “do-nothing” job as a salesman for a video gaming company in 2017 where he received a salary of $1,000 a week, an amount that was later doubled to $2,000 a week, even though he brought in little if any business for the company. He was not charged in relation to those payments.

He continued to receive those payments, prosecutors argued, until

Cullerton’s defense attorney, however, argued for a more lenient sentence of three years’ probation, with an order to perform community service and pay restitution, arguing that Cullerton was currently employed doing shift work at a warehouse and that money continues to be a source of stress for his family.

“Tom is a good and decent man who made a terrible mistake,” attorney Daniel Collins wrote in a court filing. “He should not have accepted the Teamsters salary and benefits without doing enough to earn them.

Tom will live the rest of his life with deep regret and shame, but he is determined to make it right and continue in some way to help his community.”

The Villa Park Mariners suffered their first loss of the 2022 DuPage Swim and Dive Conference season when they dropped last week’s meet against the Bloomingdale Barracudas. Swimming at their home pool, the Barracudas defeated the Mariners 390-254 in the team standings of the June 22 contest.

Villa Park’s overall season record fell to 3-1 following its loss in Bloomingdale.

The Mariners’ season continues with this week’s meet at Bartlett.

Villa Park’s individual champions in last week’s meet at Bloomingdale included Naomi Aldana, who swam to three victories in the 13-14 girls division. She earned her wins in the 100-yard individual medley (which she finished in 1 minute 13.06 seconds), the 50-yard butterfly (which she completed in 30.36 seconds) and the 50-yard breaststroke (39.18).

Warriors receive All-State recognition

Two members of the 2022 Willowbrook softball team earned All-State honors from the Illinois Softball Coaches Association.

The board honored several district students, including Ruchala and Kulczyski, at the recent meeting. Willowbrook head coach Rachel Karos spoke at the board meeting to highlight the achievements of the two Warriors, who led the team to a 19-8 record during the 2022 season. Willowbrook’s season ended with a narrow 3-2 loss to Lyons Township in an IHSA Class 4A regional final on May 28. Ruchala, who was a freshman in the recently concluded season, was Willowbrook’s leadoff hitter. She led the team in hits and provided outstanding defense at second base. Ruchala was named to the Class 4A All-State Third Team.

Kulczyski, who was named to the Class 4A All-State Second Team, supplied exceptional pitching during the 2022 season.

In one of the highlights of her senior season, Kulczyski fired a perfect game in Willowbrook’s 1-0 victory over York on May 7.

Calling on President Biden to invoke Defense Production Act to reduce gas prices

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently introduced legislation calling on President Joe Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act to expand our oil refinery capacity to eliminate the refining bottleneck that is currently contributing to high gas prices.

While fuel prices have been primarily driven by high crude oil prices in the past, the most recent spike in gas prices is in large part a product of a lack of refining capacity as oil demand has returned to pre-pandemic levels but global refining capacity has declined by 3,000,000 barrels per day and U.S. capacity alone has declined by one million barrels per day.

This shortage of oil refining capacity is the result of an unprecedented wave of refinery closures as demand for fuel plummeted during the early part of the pandemic. However, despite the current record gas prices and near historic profits, oil companies have shown little interest in restarting refineries that were shuttered during the pandemic.

While the White House has issued letters to the industry pressing for increased production, my new legislation urges the President to take additional action by using the authorities granted to him by the Defense Production Act to provide targeted technical and financial assistance to restart certain idled refineries for a limited time.

My resolution’s focus on a short-term increase in refining capacity is to address the current price spike facing consumers without making long-term

investments in refining capacity that would make us more dependent on fossil fuels as we’re transitioning to a greener economy and renewable energy sources.

Through using the Defense Production Act to make these targeted, bridge investments in our refinery infrastructure, we can relieve the burden of high gas prices while transitioning our economy to a lower-cost, lowercarbon future.

Celebrating Juneteenth We came together as a nation this month to commemorate the second-ever federally recognized Juneteenth holiday, a day long celebrated by African Americans as the day slavery officially ended in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to find many African Americans still enslaved despite President Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier. General Granger announced that slavery had ended, and the Union had been restored.

That day became known as Juneteenth, a mixture of the words June and nineteen, and was celebrated throughout Texas and the South for over 150 years before finally being recognized as a federal holiday last year.

It was an honor to join Schaumburg’s Juneteenth Celebration during the weekend to reflect and celebrate the legacy of the holiday and the work that remains to form a more perfect, more equal union.

Conroy reacts to Roe v. Wade overturn With Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Elmhurst, issued the following statement: “Make no mistake, today’s decision by an extremist Supreme Court will cost lives. An unelected Supreme Court, composed mostly of men, has stripped away decades of settled law in the greatest attack on women’s rights of our lifetime. Today’s news is shocking and heartbreaking.

“In Illinois, we feared this day could come, which is why I strong-

ly supported efforts that will ensure abortion continues to be safe, legal and accessible despite this terrible decision. This vigilance was critical, and why we need to continue to prioritize efforts to strengthen our laws on this issue.

“Women deserve the right to choose. Period. I will do everything in my power to protect access to reproductive health in Illinois.”

Let me explain. I visited the website of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum a few weeks ago to track down information on a former Illinois

lawmaker from its oral history collection.

I emerged several hours later delighted, stimulated, and eager for a return trip.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is a remarkable institution, serving as a kind of mecca for those interested in our 16th president. It offers unmatched resources about Lincoln but also

The library has conducted more than 1,000 interviews for its oral history project, including conversation with veterans, farmers, civil rights activists, athletes and politicians. It has more than 200 interviews about Illinois government and politics. Major topics include the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment, the state’s pension crisis, Barack Obama’s years in Illinois, Ronald Reagan’s youth in Dixon, reflections of legislators and journalists, and the administrations of Dan Walker, Jim Thompson, Jim Edgar and Pat Quinn.

During my foray into the oral history collection, I came across some gems. For example: Abner Mikva’s early impressions of Barack Obama Mikva served in both the Illinois and U.S. House of Representatives and as a federal judge and White House legal counsel. Mikva recalls trying as a federal judge to hire Barack Obama as a law clerk.

After a year off in 2020 and a limited run in 2021, the race, sponsored annually by the Elmhurst Running Club, is back in full swing and will step off from Elmhurst University on the morning of July 4 at 7:15 a.m., with the Kids 1K at 8:20 a.m.

“Back to normal” will be the theme at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, July 4, as the 17th Elmhurst Runners Club 4 on the 4th race commences on S. Prospect Ave., between Elmhurst University and Wilder Park. An Elmhurst Fourth of July tradition since 2005, the 4-mile race attracts participants from Elmhurst, the Chicago area and multiple states. A Kids 1K for ages 5-12 follows the main event at 8:20 a.m. On-line registration is open for both events at 4on4th.com through race morning at Elmhurst University.

Packet/race bib pickup ahead of race day is available and strongly encouraged at Fleet Feet in Elmhurst on Saturday, July 2 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, July 3 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Pickup also will be available from 5:45-7 a.m. race morning at Elmhurst University behind the main gate. On-site registration also will be available during these hours, but T-shirt sizes could be limited or sold out by then.

“We are really looking forward to getting back to how things were before the pandemic,” race director Bob Richards of the Elmhurst Running Club said. “Hopefully, this year’s race will be a huge step in that direction.”

No race was held in 2020, and the 2021 event featured a capped field of

700 in the 4-mile divided into seven separate waves with no kids race.

The 4-mile route remains the same with runners going north on Prospect, east on Park, south on Cottage Hill, east on Harbour Terrace, north on York, east-north-west on Palmer, north on York to the turnaround, south on York, east on Schiller, south-west on Palmer, south on York, west on Elmwood Terrace, north on Cottage Hill, west on Park and south on Prospect to the finish. The Kids 1K will go north and back south on Prospect.

Defending champions are course-record holders Phillip Reid of San Luis Obispo, Calif. (19:06 in 2021), and Margaret Connelly of Glen Ellyn (winning time 22:12).

Also running are George and Anita LeDonne of Elmhurst, who have run every 4 on the 4th, including running the course on their own in 2020 when the race was canceled.

“We look forward to a great morning of running, reigniting the event and celebrating the Fourth of July,” Richards said.

DCTP Fund grants more than $1 million to area agencies Recipients affect food insecurity, housing, mental health, substance use

On Tuesday, June 21, the DuPage Community Transformation Partnership (DCTP) Fund awarded more than $1 million in Immediate Intervention grants to 16 social service not-for-profit organizations serving DuPage County residents in the areas of food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and substance use disorder.

Among the organizations selected to receive funding to combat food insecurity are the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, which will receive $20,000; the Northern Illinois Food Bank, $100,000; the People’s Resource Center, $60,000; and others. Among the agencies slated to receive housing instability grants are DuPage PADS, $80,000; and Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, which will receive $25,000.

Among the agencies which will be granted funds from the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder are Easterseals DuPage & Fox Valley, $60,000; Gateway Foundation, $74,135; and Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, $75,000.

“These grants provide the opportunity for transformative change for our community,” said DuPage Foundation president & CEO Dave McGowan. “Through these grants and our partnership with the County, we are routing much-needed assistance to many of our not-for-profit partners that have been searching for solutions

to meet the sweeping demand for their services. The needs in our community have grown significantly since the onset of the pandemic, and we are proud to deploy help where it’s needed most.”

“DuPage Foundation has been a wonderful partner as we developed a grant program to benefit residents impacted economically and socially by the COVID pandemic,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

“Together, I’m confident these recipients will make a positive impact on our community to support those in need.”

How to apply in the future Organizations can apply for Immediate Intervention and Transformational grants.

To be eligible to apply for a grant, an organization must be a 501(c)(3) social service not-for-profit providing assistance in the areas of food insecurity, housing instability, mental health, or substance use disorder that meets at least one of the following criteria: • Have more than 50 percent of its total clients be DuPage County residents; or • Provide services in facilities physically located in DuPage County; or • Have a DuPage County advisory board.

The DCTP committee is currently reviewing letters of intent for Transformational grants. These grants will pro-

vide assistance for evidence-based programs focused on long-term solutions to build capacity, improve efficiency and ensure efficacy of programs that support DuPage County residents. The goal of these programs will focus on

It’s not going to happen overnight, so everything is in short supply. It’s not a Democratic problem. This is the same ACLU that was nowhere to be found when certain cities and states and the military were forcing people to get COVID-19 vaccines. *** Yeah, it’s nice to see another Democrat going to jail, our beloved Thomas Cullerton. How many more Democrats have to go to jail before people stop voting Democrat? *** So Roe v. Wade was overturned.

While I am pro-life, I am against the Supreme Court’s ruling, and it is not my place to judge what a woman decides to do, but here is a concept: Don’t get pregnant in the first place (rape and incest excluded). Actions have consequences. Overturning Roe v. Wade simply means it will be left up to the states, so supporters of abortion, instead of wasting time on a done deal by protesting the Supreme Court, should use that energy to turn your attention to state legislators. Illinois, specifically, will become a hub for abortions, unfortunately, and we will be paying for them. Chicago was already setting aside money for transportation, lodging, the abortion itself and other expenses for women who come here

from out of state. I don’t want my tax dollars paying for elective abortions— which are being ill-defined as “health care” or “contraception.” *** Do you remember what several Democrats said after Biden took office? The adults are back in charge!

How’s that working out? Biden’s been in power for nearly a year and a-half.

According to Democrats, nothing is his fault. Gas prices, inflation, cratering 401Ks and IRAs, rising crime, mayhem at the border and food shortages are all beyond his control. It’s no wonder Democrats don’t want to see any criticism of Biden in Speak Out. Democrats are incompetent. *** Last week, I ran into a group of people who are trying to create a new state of Illinois under Article IV of the Constitution. They want to separate Cook County from the rest of the state. It seems like a long-shot, but if the Democrats sweep the Illinois elections this year, I think their movement will pick up a lot of steam because so many people are fed up with government corruption, incompetence and mismanagement in this state. *** So the president has considered a gas tax “holiday.” Yeah, how’s that going to work out for us? A whopping 18 cents a gallon? How about the state, county and local governments follow suit, and maybe we can see 50 cents a gallon or so? It is obvious the federal government is not going to hold the oil companies accountable for their part (greed?) in rising gas prices. And the governor talks about removing sales tax on food for the time being. All these carrots dangled in front of our nose, but nothing is happening. We need it now. Immediately. Can I tell my utility, mortgage and credit card companies to

hold off on billing me until I get this “windfall” from the governments that already take a big chunk of my hardearned money? I don’t think so. *** I find it comical with the Democratic-leaning media’s obsession with Trump. I read headline after headline about Jan. 6 and all the bad things he supposedly did. I am not concerned with him. I am concerned with the current administration running this country into a recession. Publish stories on how we are headed to a recession.

Publish stories on how this administration’s policies are causing the rise in gas prices. Publish stories on the inept FDA or the unqualified transportation secretary. Publish how much taxpayer money was spent on Ukraine or this silly Jan. 6 theatre. Wake up, people; they continue to groom your thinking. *** Being a dyed-in-the-wool and loyal Cubs fan, my life is not affected whether they win or lose. My loyalty to a political party is a different can of worms.

Especially when my team changes their ideals and goals. The Democrats no longer consider my American culture and beliefs. My Democrat team has lost another supporter every time I buy something to live, including gas and food. Thank you. *** I heard Adam Kinzinger say something recently that I found laughable.

He said, quote: “My party (Republican) has utterly failed the American people at truth.” This coming from someone who’s part of that Jan. 6 kangaroo court. Since you’re not running for re-election (thank God), why don’t you switch parties and check with CNN and MSNBC to see if they will offer you a job since I assume you think they are the standard-bearers for truth.
