Republican governor candidates on the issues, Part 1 GOP field talks Trump, Biden, ‘CRT,’ abortion and more

Editor’s note: Part One of this story, in which the candidates address abortion, the economy and pensions, appears this week. Part Two, in which the candidates address Critical Race Theory and schools; Trump, January 6 and Black Lives Matter; and COVID-19 policy, will be published next week.

Abortion, January 6, Donald Trump, Critical Race Theory and whether Joe Biden is rightfully the president of the United States were the basis of questions asked to a field of six Republican candidates for Illinois governor last week.

A pair of debates took place on two stages in Chicago due to a scheduling conflict between two TV networks, NBC 5 and WGN. NBC’s 6 p.m. debate included Aurora Mayor Ricard Irvin, the polling and money frontrunner, along with former Waterloo state Sen. Paul Schimpf and suburban attorney Max Solomon.

The 7 p.m. WGN debate that followed included Sen. Darren Bailey, of Xenia, Petersburg venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan and suburban paving magnate Gary Rabine.

The following is a summary of some of the candidates’ response to the various debate questions.

On abortion When pressed by moderator Mary

Ann Ahern of NBC, Irvin stuck to talking points from previous media appearances on abortion, stating he is pro-life, but saying it would be “irresponsible” to comment on a leaked Supreme Court decision that could overturn Roe v. Wade.

“The stand will happen once an actual draft comes down,” Irvin said, which Ahern noted could be after the primary election.

He said the voters he speaks to are “upset about how JB Pritzker has been so extreme,” and he would look to reinstate a requirement that doctors notify parents 48 hours before a minor receives an abortion. He’s also said he’d support exceptions for life of the mother, rape and incest.

Bailey said his only exceptions, in the unlikely circumstance he could work with lawmakers to outlaw abortion, would be for threats to the life of the mother.

Otherwise, his policy would involve making abortion “unnecessary” by getting church groups involved to offer unspecified “options” to pregnant people.

“We’re asking church, civic, religious groups to come alongside and offer options that the pregnant woman may not know or be aware exists,” he said.

Sullivan said when he heard about the leaked Supreme Court decision, he dropped to his knees and prayed with his family, and he said he would “be the most pro-life governor in the

history of the state of Illinois.” His exceptions include rape, incest and life of the mother, he said.

Schimpf said he would not necessarily push for, but would sign, “any legislation” that brings Illinois “closer to the mainstream.”

Solomon said he believes “that life begins before we were formed,” and Rabine said he would allow exceptions for life of the mother, and he suggested increasing the use and funding of ultrasound machines.

“I’m confident that when ... a young lady gets an ultrasound, the odds are over 80 percent that she won’t get that that abortion,” Rabine said.

Any action on abortion would require action from the General Assembly that could very well maintain veto-proof supermajorities of Democrats.

On the economy Bailey, who served on a Clay County school board for 17 years and voted at least a dozen times to raise property taxes in the district, said when it comes to education, “money is not the answer.”

He said state payments to schools were unreliable at the time he served.

Illinois, in 2017, adopted a new school funding formula directing more money to the neediest districts with a requirement of $350 million to be added to K-12 funding each year.

Bailey didn’t identify any cuts to

state government but said his plan was to implement a “zero based budget.”

“That’s how we weed out the fat,” he said. “Literally in every department, we’ll hire and select men and women of common sense and business sense who will begin to dissect each agency and rebuild it.”

When asked how his governorship would differ from that of previous Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner should Democrats in the General Assembly not fall in line with his plans, Bailey once again pointed to “zero based budgeting.”

He also said he’d “cut all unfunded mandates from our communities and our schools.”

Rauner, who came into office with a broad “turnaround agenda” aimed at reforming pensions and busting public employee unions, presided over a two-year budget impasse during which the state spent billions of dollars more than it took in.

Rabine said he believes he could work with lawmakers to avoid an impasse because most lawmakers want what’s best for Illinois.

“I’m a turnaround person in business,” he said. “I’m gonna turn the state around like nobody’s ever seen before.”

Sullivan said all Rauner wanted to do is “fight with Mike Madigan” and he betrayed conservative principles by signing an abortion expansion.

“Well, I am a downstate Cen-

tral Illinois guy, one of eight kids who grew up working on a farm. I had to split a piece of gum when I was growing up with my mom, you know, because we never could take a full piece for ourselves. And so working together with others is part of my DNA,” he said.

As governor he would replace the Illinois State Board of Education, end COVID-19 executive orders and wield the veto, he said.

“And then, God-willing, we are going to have veto power as governor, then we need to replace out the legislature with next generation conservatives who will change the state,” he said.

Rabine said Illinois needs to “crush property taxes to being the average of the country,” although local governments, not the state, levy taxes on property.

“In many cases the state has had to take on a lot of responsibility from the local community to change it,” he said without going into specifics.

Sullivan claimed he could save $10 billion in the state budget, citing only a planned hiring freeze, planned pension reforms and local government consolidation.

“I’m going to get out a Sharpie as big as Donald Trump’s and write veto across any new tax that comes across my desk,” Sullivan said.

Monkeypox — What is it and should we be worried?

As if coronavirus hasn’t been enough, a new virus – monkeypox – is making its presence felt overseas and this rare virus has recently shown up in the United States.

Monkeypox, a virus that’s like smallpox but milder, doesn’t usually infect anyone in the U.S. However, in May, a Massachusetts resident tested positive for monkeypox after a trip to Canada. Infections were also reported in Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom in May. The monkeypox name came from its discovery in 1958, when colonies of research monkeys developed

a pox-like illness. The first human case of monkeypox was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970.

Subsequent human cases have been reported since, mainly in Africa.

Monkeypox symptoms include: • Fever • Headache • Muscle aches • Swollen lymph nodes • Chills • Exhaustion • Sore throat Within one to three days after the fever begins, people will develop a rash. It can take 14 days for the body to clear the monkeypox infection.

The virus mainly spreads through

contact with infected animals but can also spread through contact with infected body fluids, monkeypox sores, or items such as clothing or bedding that have been contaminated with fluids or sores of a person or animal with monkeypox.

Monkeypox virus can also spread through respiratory droplets, but in a close setting, such as the same household or a healthcare setting.

There is some good news, however: monkeypox is rare, it’s not a new virus and is well understood by infectious disease experts.

“Monkeypox has not been known to transmit well from person to person,” said Jonathan Pinsky, M.D., medical director of infection control at Edward Hospital. “Most infections

are linked to exposures with infected animals.”

In fact, in 2003 there was an outbreak of monkeypox in the Midwest, including Illinois, that resulted from human contact with infected prairie dogs that had been sold as pets. No human-to-human transmission was reported.

Because monkeypox is so similar to smallpox, the smallpox vaccine provides effective protection against both viruses.

Monkeypox, like smallpox, spreads very slowly, making vaccination an effective way to stop outbreaks, Dr. Pinsky says. The smallpox vaccine can even prevent infection in people who receive it after exposure to an infected person.

The smallpox vaccine isn’t publicly available, as the World Health Organization declared smallpox eliminated in 1980. The United States has a supply of the vaccine in the unlikely case of an outbreak.

Dr. Pinsky says experts will likely determine the cause of the new monkeypox transmissions soon, which will help determine the public risk.

At this point, no action is needed unless someone suspects they have symptoms of monkeypox or thinks they may have been in contact with someone suspected of having monkeypox.

In that case, they should contact their primary care physician’s office for guidance. Get more information at EEHealth.org.

Coco ordered that he be released to the custody of his mother. The juvenile has been charged with one count of disorderly conduct/threat to a school.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 23.

It is alleged that on May 24, a sixth-grade student was speaking to

a teacher and asked the teacher “has anyone blown up the school before?”

It is alleged that the student then stated that he would be the first to do it.

It is further alleged that the student asked the teacher if police officers were at the school and then began rocking his chair making a clicking noise on the ground and said “shots

fired” every time the chair hit the ground. The teacher reported the incidents to authorities at the school who contacted the Wheaton Police Department.

“School safety remains a top priority of my administration and we will continue to be proactive in identifying students who are in need of

services in order to prevent acts of violence,” Berlin said. “Students must know however that threats such as alleged in this case are no joking matter. Every threat involving a juvenile must be fully investigated by law enforcement and where appropriate, will turned be over to authorities in the juvenile justice system.”

Wheaton middle school student charged with alleged threat against school

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police William Murphy have announced that a 12-year-old male Edison Middle School student has been charged with making threatening statements directed at the school.

The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing where Judge Anthony

The Villa Park Village Board held a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1, to reportedly approve the hiring of a new village manager.

The village board announced the special meeting on Monday, May 30.

According to information provided in the announcement, the board will consider a resolution to appoint Matthew Harline as Villa Park’s new village manager.

That resolution also approves and authorizes the execution of an employment agreement between Harline and the village.

According to the resolution, Harline’s appointment as Villa Park’s village manager will take effect on June 8.

An online search indicates Harline was recently an assistant city manager in Dover, Delaware. He reportedly

worked in that position from May 2019 to December 2021. During that period, Harline spent eight months serving as Dover’s interim city manager.

Before working in Delaware, Harline reportedly served as the city administrator of two Missouri cities—Holts Summit (from May 2018 to January 2019) and Centralia (from July 2014 to May 2018).

In December 2021, Villa Park Village Board members voted 4-3 to terminate the employment contract of Village Manager Richard Keehner, without cause. Keehner had been Villa Park’s village manager since April 2011.

Villa Park Public Works Director Michael Guerra has served as the interim village manager since Keehner’s departure.

Illinois rejoins federal Title X family planning program Action comes after Biden reverses Trump administration’s ‘gag rule’

Illinois has resumed participation in the federal Title X family planning program after refusing to take part for the past three years in protest over a Trump administration policy regarding abortion services.

Gov. JB Pritzker recently announced that the state has been awarded $5.4 million in federal funding for the upcoming fiscal year and will soon distribute $11.2 million in grants to agencies that operate 98 family planning clinics throughout the state.

At issue has been the Trumpera policy, recently reversed by the Biden administration, that prohibited recipients of those grant funds from counseling patients about abortion options or referring them to abortion providers.

“Now that the Biden adminis-

tration has reversed Trump’s gag rule, I’m proud to announce that we have rejoined the federal title 10 program and we’re putting record funding toward our Illinois family planning program,” Pritzker said at a news conference.

Prior to the Trump administration’s rule, which took effect in 2019, the Illinois Department of Public Health received about $4 million a year through the program.

Pritzker announced in August 2019, shortly after the policy took effect, that IDPH would no longer participate in the program while a number of other family planning service providers, including Planned Parenthood of Illinois and Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness, said they would not comply with the new requirements.

For the rest of that fiscal year, IDPH used General Revenue Fund money to fill in what was previous-

ly paid for by the federal government.

The following year, the agency expanded the program with $5.8 million to fund Planned Parenthood, which had previously gotten its Title X money on its own, and other providers that weren’t previously part of the state’s Title X program.

For the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1, Illinois reapplied for the federal money and was awarded $5.4 million while the state continues to fund the program with $5.8 million in state funds, bringing the total to $11.2 million.

Solomon said Illinois needs constitutional pension reform, although he said his plan would not “touch any vested pension.”

In 2011, Illinois created a second tier of pension recipients that have lesser benefits than the pensioners who joined state payrolls prior that date, including a smaller cost of living increase.

That’s based on a recently leaked draft opinion in the case in which Justice Samuel Alito, supposedly writing for the majority, argues that the right to privacy, which was the basis behind Roe vs. Wade, is not expressly mentioned in the Constitution and therefore cannot become the basis for a right to an abortion,

which also is not mentioned in the Constitution.

“The slippery slope that will eradicate reproductive choice has already begun,” he said. “First, it’s restricting abortion. Then it will control access to contraceptives.”

That was a reference to a 1965 Supreme Court case, Griswold v.

Connecticut, in which the court struck down a state law that made it a crime for any person to use a drug or instrument to prevent conception. Then-Justice William O. Douglas wrote in that opinion that the Bill of Rights, when read as a whole, creates “penumbras,” or zones of other rights, including a right to privacy.

Others, however, have argued that reversing Roe v. Wade would only allow states to decide their own policies on abortion.

In 2019, anticipating the possibility that Roe v. Wade might one day be overturned, Illinois lawmakers passed the Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares access to reproductive health care, including abortion services, a fundamental right under Illinois law.

Warriors suffer narrow loss to the Lions in a regional final

Lyons Township’s pitcher strikes out 17 in a 3-2 win; Warriors close their season with a 19-8 record

The Willowbrook softball team’s 2022 season ended with Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Lyons Township in an IHSA Class 4A regional championship game on the Lions’ home field in Western Springs.

The Warriors finished their season with an overall record of 19-8.

Willowbrook opened the post-season with a 10-0, five-inning victory over Hinsdale Central in a regional semifinal on May 24.

Senior pitcher Caitlyn Kulczyski

led the Warriors to their win over the Red Devils by allowing two hits and no walks in her complete-game effort.

Kulczyski struck out nine Hinsdale Central batters.

The Warriors scored six runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead over Hinsdale Central. Willowbrook added two more runs in the fourth inning and ended the game with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Junior Kayleigh Dennison went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for Willowbrook in last week’s win over

the Red Devils. Freshman Sonia Ruchala went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a pair of runs. Sophomore Isabella Dugo went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Sophomore Karman Rowe also went 2-for-3 and drove in one run.

Willowbrook scored one run in the top of the first inning of Saturday’s regional final against Lyons Township.

The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Lyons Township added another run in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lions delivered another run in the

fifth inning to push their lead to 3-1.

Willowbrook scored one run in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Hannah Kenny hit a two-out single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Kenny moved to third base and scored after two more passed balls.

The Warriors scored their first-inning run when Kulczyski reached base on an error, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and scored on a single by senior Grace Hayes.

Kulczyski pitched another complete game in Saturday’s regional final. She allowed six hits and one earned run in six innings on the mound. She duplicated her performance from the regional semifinal by recording nine strikeouts and not giving up any walks.

Winning season abruptly ends with a loss to Schaumburg; Warriors finish with a 25-5 record

The Willowbrook baseball team’s 2022 season ended with last week’s 3-1 loss to Schaumburg in an IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal on the Saxons’ home field.

The Warriors, who posted a 25-4 regular-season record, entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the South Elgin Sectional. Schaumburg was the sectional’s No. 16 seed.

The Warriors scored their only run of their post-season opener in the third inning. Schaumburg took the lead in the May 26 contest when it scored three runs in the fourth inning.

Junior Colin Slivka walked and eventually scored Willowbrook’s lone run. Junior Joey Tumilty singled to drive in Slivka.

Senior Jacob Skinner pitched the first four innings of the regional semifinal for Willowbrook. He allowed three hits and two earned runs. Skinner struck out five batters and gave up one walk.

Sophomore Dayne Meyer pitched two scoreless innings for the Warriors.

Meyer gave up two hits and one walk while recording three strikeouts.

Senior Max Vaisvila pitched a

scoreless seventh inning for Willowbrook. He struck out two batters and didn’t allow any hits.

Schaumburg’s starting pitcher fired a complete game. He struck out 11 batters and held the Warriors to three hits.

Willowbrook finished the season with a 25-5 record. The Warriors won the West Suburban Gold Conference title with a 15-3 record.

Schaumburg advanced to Saturday’s regional final against York.

The Dukes beat the Saxons 11-5 to win the Schaumburg Regional title and advance to this week’s South Elgin Sectional.

“It was overall a very good season,” stated Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos after Saturday’s loss to Lyons Township. “Our bats had been hot. Today we just didn’t have it. Caitlyn threw a great game. Grace Hayes hit well. We had decent defense. We just didn’t make them [the Lions] play enough defense.”

Lyons Township advanced to the Marist Sectional. The Lions faced Downers Grove North in a sectional semifinal this week. The winner of that game will meet either Marist or Riverside-Brookfield in this Friday’s sectional final.

Athlete Award. Naumovsky is a standout gymnast who competed at the IHSA state meet in 2020 and 2022. (The 2021 IHSA girls gymnastics state meet was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.) Rattana was the Willowbrook girls golf team’s top player for four consecutive seasons. As a freshman, she qualified for the IHSA Class AA state meet.

Rattana was also a member of the Warriors’ badminton team.

She recently joined senior Amelia Gesicki to compete in doubles at the 2022 IHSA state badminton meet. Alex Simmons (above) received the Willowbrook Athletic Booster Club’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete award. Simmons was a key player on the Warriors’ boys basketball team. He’s also been a member of Willowbrook’s boys crosscountry and track and field teams. Simmons competed in the 400-meter run at last week’s IHSA Class 3A boys state track and field meet. He earned his state-meet berth in that event with his first-place finish at the Glenbard North Sectional.

‘Atomic Annie’ was one big gun!

Editor’s note: In its March 31 issue, the Elmhurst Independent published the obituary of Donald E. Bennett, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Korean War. His family shared the following story, which readers of the Independent may enjoy in honor of Memorial Day 2022.

Not many people can say that they’ve been within three miles of a nuclear blast, but Donald Bennett was one of them. Born in southeastern Missouri in 1931, Don was the son of a farming family, Unfortunately, both of his parents died when he was young.

He moved to Elmhurst to live with an older half-brother. During high school, Don worked part-time in construction jobs, mostly plastering.

After graduation from York High School in 1950, he worked full time in construction, pouring concrete and other tasks before he was drafted into the Army in 1952.

Don went to Camp Chaffee in Arkansas for basic training, after which many of his friends were sent directly to Korea. Don was assigned to Advanced Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla. While there, he was trained on a number of different artillery pieces including the 105mm and 155mm howitzers. During the Korean War, soldiers from the South Korean Army came to Fort Sill to be trained on these weapons along with our soldiers.

While most of the weapons Don trained on would have been familiar to many veterans of both WWII and the Korean War, there was one weapon that was very unusual: the M65, which was a 240mm atomic cannon nicknamed “Atomic Annie.”

It was the first American artillery piece capable of firing a nuclear device; it was 84 feet long and weighted 83 tons! Because of its large size and weight, it would sink if it was left on the road. It had to be moved with two “prime movers,” which were special tractors designed to move artillery. Don’s role was to drive one of these prime movers.

While still stationed at Fort Sill, Don and his team were ordered to go to an Army site called Camp Desert Rock, not far from Las Vegas in the Nevada desert. He remembers that on May 25, 1953, they were sent to a nuclear test site called Frenchman Flat for a test of “Atomic Annie.”

trench and told to close their eyes and to cover their faces with their forearms. After the atomic artillery fired its weapon, the shell landed and detonated about three miles from where Don and his fellow servicemen were huddled in the trench. Even though they had their eyes closed and forearms over them, Don said the blast was so bright, you could see it right through your arm When the dust settled, a soldier in a protective suit got out of the trench with a Geiger counter. After performing some measurements, he declared that everything was safe. Don and his fellow soldiers were ordered to ground zero, where they walked around, picking up some rocks and dusting them off.

Then they climbed into trucks to go back to their base. The entire time they were doing this, they had no protective gear and were breathing the dust-filled air that was presumably contaminated with radioactive materials. He’s still not sure what the point of going to ground zero was, but that’s what his orders were, so that’s what he did. This was the first and only time that a nuclear weapon was detonated after being fired from a cannon. Although they were only in Nevada for three weeks, Don and his buddies did manage to visit Las Vegas, which he really enjoyed.

By the time Don got back to Fort Sill, his enlistment time was almost up and the Korean War had ended in July of 1953. Don joked that the North Koreans heard he was coming over, so they stopped the war! Don had been promoted to an acting Sergeant and he was encouraged to re-enlist. Had he done so, he would

Happiness is …

I remember a book from early childhood written by Charles Schulz.

It was titled, “Happiness Is” and it caused quite a stir amongst the preschool crowd (and beyond). For good reason. Its message was simple, meaningful, ageless and timeless.

So timeless, in fact, that its simple idea remains meaningful and ageless to this day. Happiness is … everywhere.

It is all around us. It is ours for the finding and the taking. It is where each of us chooses to see it. Schulz’s book started with “Happiness is a warm puppy,” and it is in that vein where I’ll start. Happiness is: Puppy breath.

A new and empty garbage can liner, that someone other than you installed—without you knowing.

Census Bureau: Illinois may have been undercounted in 2020 census Survey data shows 6 states undercounted, 8 overcounted

The Census Bureau recently released new survey data suggesting the population of Illinois may have been undercounted by nearly 2 percent in the 2020 headcount.

That was one of the findings of the Census Bureau’s Post-Enumeration Survey, or PES, something the bureau does after each decennial census to assess the quality of the census data. The results do not change the official population numbers of any state, nor do they affect congressional reapportionment, but they do help guide the bureau in its planning for the next decennial census.

“The release of these PES estimates assists us in understanding how well we did this decade, state by state, in our efforts to count everyone living in the United States,” Census Bureau Director Robert L. Santos said in a news release. “Transparency is a critical aspect of scientific integrity. That is why we are releasing these results to the public.”

According to the survey, Illinois, with a 1.97 percent undercount, was among six states with “statistically significant” undercounts. There were eight states with statistically significant overcounts, while 36 states had neither an undercount nor overcount.

The other states with undercounts were all located in the South: Arkansas at 5.04 percent; Florida at 3.48 percent; Mississippi at 4.11 percent; Tennessee at 4.78 percent; and Texas

at 1.92 percent.

States with population overcounts included Delaware at 5.45 percent; Hawaii at 6.79 percent; Massachusetts at 2.24 percent; Minnesota at 3.84 percent; New York at 3.44 percent; Ohio at 1.49 percent; Rhode Island at 5.05 percent; and Utah at 2.59 percent.

There was no statistically significant undercount or overcount for 36 states, Washington, D.C., or the nation as a whole.

In Illinois, the official 2020 census showed the state’s population as 12,812,508. That was a decline of 18,124, or 0.1 percent, from the 2010 census. As a result of the state’s population loss, combined with large gains in some other states, Illinois lost one of its congressional seats, leaving the state with only 17 U.S. House seats.

However, if Illinois really was undercounted by 1.97 percent, as the survey suggests, that would have meant that the population actually grew by more than 257,000, putting it at just over 13 million.

The population loss that Illinois did see was smaller than many people had predicted. During the 10 years leading up to the census, annual population estimates released by the Census Bureau were showing the population could drop by as much as 1.23 percent—10 times more than it actually did.

In response to those concerns, Gov. JB Pritzker signed an executive

order in 2019 committing $29 million to census outreach projects to encourage and help people to fill out their census forms.

Pritzker released a statement hailing the survey results as good news, but also expressing frustration that the state’s growth was not reflected in the official census.

“While it is disappointing that these numbers were not reflected in the initial count, I have already spoken to members of our congressional delegation and will work tirelessly to ensure Illinois receives its fair share of federal funding,” he said. “I look forward to celebrating this development with all Illinoisans, including those who routinely badmouth our state.”

During a media briefing ahead of the survey release, Census Bureau officials emphasized that no census is ever perfect, and no survey is perfect either.

They also noted that the quality of the 2020 census was affected by unique factors that included the pandemic and wildfires in the West that damaged air quality and made it difficult for census workers to go doorto-door to gather data from those who had not filled out their census forms.

But even in normal years, they said, reporting errors occur. While people who fill out the census forms are supposed to report the names and ages of people living in the household on April 1 of the census year,

overcounts can occur when they include a person who dies before that date or a child born shortly after that date. Undercounts occur when people do not report everyone in the household or fail to fill out the census form at all.

The survey data released did not identify the causes of undercounts or overcounts within any particular state, nor did it identify the cities, counties or regions within a state where the count may have been inaccurate.

On a national level, however, officials said undercounts generally occur within the Black population, Hispanic or Latino population, American Indian and Alaska Native populations living on reservations and the demographic group that reported being of “some other race.”

Overcounts, they said, tend to occur in the white, non-Hispanic population and the Asian population.

They also noted that the 2020 census undercounted children, especially young children ages 0-4.

Bensenville Park District announces DGLC summer hours Facility to close at 8 p.m. weekdays beginning May 31

The Bensenville Park District’s Deer Grove Leisure Center (DGLC) will be closed Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day, and will operate with new hours beginning Tuesday, May 31.

The DGLC’s summer hours of operation will be as follows: 6 a.m.8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturdays 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

The revised summer schedule will last into August and also affects the Wood Street Fitness evening group fitness class schedule.

Traci will now run 7:05-7:55 p.m.

The Knights’ 400 relay took 22nd in the state in 44.64 with senior Jason Hall, junior Denzell Gibson, sophomore KJ Parker and senior Antonio Richardson.

Hall, Gibson, Parker and Richardson took 23rd in the 800 relay with a time of 1:34.26.

York boys track The York boys track team’s 3200 relay team did some serious time crunching at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston recently. The team of junior Aidan Hill, senior Jackson Geiger, senior Emmet Doyle and senior Garrett Schwan was seventh after the preliminary round of the 3,200 with a time of 8:01.28, earning a finals berth in the event at the Class 3A state finals meet. They came back and ran 7:53.63 in the finals to finish fifth in the state.

York senior Ethan Summer also came up big, finishing 10th in the state in the Class 3A 1,600 run with a time of 4:14.45. He was 10th after prelims with a time of 4:15.30 — which earned a finals berth as well.

The York 800 relay team of sophomore Luke Mailander and juniors Kelly Watson, Joey Valeski and Leo Glennon took 17th in the state with a time of 1:31.71.

The Dukes were 20th in the state in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:30.09. That crew featured Valeski, Hill, Doyle and Glennon.

Bensenville Park District launches stroller fitness program

The Bensenville Park District is starting a fitness program geared to moms, beginning Friday, June 3, at Wood Street Fitness, 1000 W. Wood Street, Bensenville.

Fit for Life-Stroller Fitness, taught by postnatal-certified instructor Evaristo Hernandez, is a functional, total-body and postnatal-specific workout for moms with kids and babies in tow who are 4 months old and up.

During the 60-minute class, moms won’t just be pushing a stroller; they

will be using them as fitness props along with other small equipment.

The workout combines power walking and cardio bursts, strength training, postnatal-specific core and flexibility conditioning, ending with a relaxing, full-body stretch.

“This class is great not only to bond with your child but also to connect with other moms and create a support group of friends,” said Wood Street fitness program supervisor Silvia Acevedo.

After a rainy month of May caused the cancellation of a scheduled Callaway Fitting Day and limited play during its Family Golf Night, White Pines Golf Club announces its June special event schedule, which includes new dates for each of those events.

The golf club will host a Callaway Fitting Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the club’s driving range. According to the Callaway website, custom fitting can be one of the most important aspects to improve one’s golf game.

“The great thing about the fitting day is it gives people of all skill

levels the chance to try the newest and best equipment on the market,” said Godfrey.

“You’ll be able to upgrade your set with equipment that’s customized to your game.”

If it was politically motivated, get help before you hurt someone. *** It is a shame many of these Republican politicians are in such lockstep with gun rights and the NRA that they can’t support legislation such as banning assault weapons, redflag laws and universal background checks. They need to be voted out of office wherever they are, but especially in Texas. You need to be 21 years old to buy cigarettes in Texas, but only 18 years old buy a gun like this deranged killer did in Uvalde.

I’m sorry. That’s just wrong! *** Sure enough, I knew the horrific shooting incident in the Texas school would bring about the anti-gun outrage. First off, this shooter was able to buy guns legally, so that is the system’s fault. He apparently was not on anyone’s immediate radar. I am totally in favor of gun laws but if they are not strictly enforced, they are not worth the paper they’re written on.

And as one mental health professional said, this case is not a mental health issue, despite the shooter having been bullied. She said, essentially, he was an angry individual, and he knew when he bought guns and bullets that they would kill people. My question is: How was he allowed into the building? Our local schools today have locked doors and we must state our business to be buzzed in. Did we

learn nothing since the 1980s, when Laurie Dann stormed a Winnetka school and started shooting, killing a boy? It’s bad enough that kids have to be scared of tornados and fires (think preparedness drills), but now they have to worry about being shot. *** Washington wants to control climate change and they can’t even control the supply of baby formula. *** So State Farm has backed off from its idea to distribute LGBTQ-themed children’s books to teachers and libraries, which target kids as young as kindergarten age. First of all, how do we explain “gender fluidity” to 5-year-olds who are at the developmental stage of still being centered on themselves—and then are thrust into an environment (school) that is filled with other self-centered 5-yearolds? They have so much more to be focusing on, like learning to function in a group setting or reading/ language development. Second of all, especially at this stage, it is a parent’s or guardian’s role to talk about gender as they see fit. That includes the kid with two dads or two moms, who should be able to decide how to approach the topic without interference. Then, how will we explain that “men can get pregnant, too”? Maybe we should ask New York Rep. Standout Warrior runs to a 20th-place finish in preliminaries of the 400-meter run

Willowbrook senior Alex Simmons finished his career as a Warrior by competing at last week’s IHSA Class 3A boys state track and field meet. Simmons participated in the 400-meter run at the state meet, which took place at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Simmons completed the one-lap race around the track in 51.79 seconds during a preliminary heat at the state meet. He placed 20th among the competitors in that event and did not earn a berth in the final. The top 10 finishers advanced to the 400-meter final.

Simmons was a member of the Warriors’ basketball, cross-country and track and field teams. He was recently named the Willowbrook Athletic Booster Club’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete at the school’s Senior Athletic Banquet.

8th annual Love Your Neighbor Day taking applications Homeowners can apply for assistance with yard work, exterior repairs The Christian Church of Villa Park will again be working with a number of churches in Villa Park and Lombard to host the eighth annual Love Your Neighbor Day on Saturday, Sept.17.

Applications are being accepted now from homeowners in the Villa Park/Lombard area who are having difficulty keeping up with work outside their homes because of financial, physical or other limitations and who could benefit from a group of people volunteering at their home for a day.

As a safety precaution, only yard

work and exterior repairs will be done this year. The work will be done by small groups of volunteers from churches and the community at no cost to the homeowners.

Last year 140 volunteers came together on the Love Your Neighbor Day to provide assistance to 28 homeowners in Lombard and Villa Park. The number of homeowner applicants that will be accepted will depend on the number of volunteers. Volunteer sign-up sheets are also available now. Church youth groups, families and friends can sign up to work together as a group.

Homeowner applications and volunteer sign-up sheets can be obtained by sending an e-mail to loveyourneighbor15@yahoo.com, on the CCVP website at www.ccvponline.net, or by leaving a message at 63-833-7262. Information and photos from previous years can be seen on the Love Your Neighbor Day Facebook page. The deadline for submitting homeowner applications is Aug. 19, but homeowners are encouraged to submit applications early.

Former legal secretary gets five years for stealing from law firm, posing as attorney On Tuesday, May 24, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that a former legal secretary for a DuPage County law firm had been sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing nearly $100,000 from the firm. Aracelia Dominguez, 42, of the 4500 block of W. Lawrence, Chicago, appeared at her sentencing hearing late last week where Judge Margaret O’Connell handed down the sentence.

On Oct. 1, 2020, Dominguez entered a guilty plea to one count of

Theft by Deception, a Class 2 Felony.

The sentence stems from allegations that beginning in February 2013, Dominguez, at times presenting herself as an attorney, met with potential clients of her employer without her employer’s knowledge and accepted payments, primarily in cash, for immigration legal work that she was not authorized to perform. In addition to the cash payments, Dominguez forged multiple checks she received from clients, endorsed the checks to herself and deposited the checks into her personal bank accounts. Domin-

guez was fired from the firm in December 2016 at which time the firm’s owner noticed discrepancies in the firm’s finances and contacted the Addison Police Department.

On Oct. 3, 2017, following an investigation in the matter, an $80,000 arrest warrant was issued for Dominguez. In February 2018, Dominguez was taken into custody in Cook County. On February 20, 2018, after her bond was reduced to $40,000 with 10% to apply, Dominguez posted the necessary $4,000, and was released from custody.
