This family came out to on Sunday to help Cornerstone Used Books celebrate its 20th anniversary where snacks, ice cream and balloon animals kept the little ones entertained—especially this little barefooted toddler in the blue jeans.

This is Mike, who found a couple of “vintage vinyls” to his liking at Sunday’s Cornerstone Used Books 20th anniversary celebration—a Beatles tribute album with songs dating back to 1962, and the record he’s showing here, by the group .38 Special. He says he was in kindergarten in 1962, but still remembers the Beatles getting their start around that time that led to their fame.

On Sunday, a nice crowd of people, young and old, visited Cornerstone Used Books at 22 S. Villa Avenue in Villa Park to help celebrate the store’s 20th anniversary with owner Kathy Carwell.

There was music, free books for kids, face-painting, crafts to make and crafts for sale, balloon animals and much more. Additionally, there was food available from Tickle Me Tamale, SpoonBurger and an ice cream truck owned by an independent driver who did not speak any English; only Arabic. Fortunately, Kathy’s daughter was able to invite him because she speaks Arabic.

The robotic age comes to hospital Edward-Elmhurst Health acquire ‘Moxi the robot’

Edward-Elmhurst Health has acquired Moxi the robot to assist nurses in obtaining and delivering supplies to the floors, which will be a real time-saver for the nurses. Moxi the robot will give time back for patient care and help nurses focus on patients by helping to take care of deliveries.

Diligent Robotics is the company that EEH is working with on this robot project. There are two robots at Edward Hospital and two at Elmhurst Hospital. Edward and Elmhurst Hospitals are the first hospitals in the Chicago area to have Moxi and first to go live in the Midwest.

More facts about Moxi • Moxi went live at Elmhurst Hospital on June 2. Moxi will be live at Edward Hospital later in June.

• Moxi can access any floor except Mother/Baby and the NICU due to the secure nature of these units.

• Moxi is available 24/7.

• Moxi can go about 6-8 hours before needing to charge.

• Kiosks where nurses or clinicians

An estimated total of 716+ potential deliveries per day are currently being hand-delivered.

Assuming about 15 minutes per task, this would amount to a potential 5,370 hours of time returned to the Care Team per month.

It is estimated Moxi could perform about 200 tasks and-or deliveries each day.

Choose DuPage issues Annual Project Report

On the heels of its recent DuPage County Regional Business Outlook held Thursday, June 2, Choose DuPage has issued its Annual Project Report for 2021, which includes a list of 140 new and expanded companies in the County.

The report noted that coming off the pandemic year, DuPage County still managed to see growth across a diverse range of industries. This included everything from traditional regional powerhouses to new and evolving sectors including data centers. Boosted by eCommerce, the industrial segment accounted for 80% of the year’s projects, according to Choose DuPage.

Meanwhile, the report indicated that office real estate gained new momentum.

The sector, which took a big hit during COVID-19, has been spurred on by investment such as that of BDO Digital, which recently inked a high-profile deal for their new Oak Brook office, Choose DuPage said.

In 2021 DuPage experienced growth across the board, with 140 businesses which either moved to or expanded their footprint here in DuPage County, representing $50 million invested, 555 jobs created or retained, and 9.6 million square feet of new or improved space.

Choose DuPage reported that six companies represent the biggest projects in 2021: Stratacache in Lisle with 100,000 square feet in development; Clyde’s Donuts in Glendale Heights with 150,000 sq. ft.; BDO Digital in Oak Brook with 28,000 sq. ft.; Wynndalco in Addison with 24,243 sq. ft.;

Platinum Converting in Bartlett with 207,575 sq. ft.; and Bridge Industrial in Downers Grove with 126,445 sq. ft.

HOPE Taskforce offers second round of grant funding Effort continues to address opioid crisis

The DuPage County Heroin/ Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce has announced another funding opportunity to address the opioid crisis in DuPage County. Areas of interest for this funding cycle include reducing access to drugs, reducing opioid use and misuse, overdose response and prevention (including harm reduction), treatment and recovery, and substance use prevention and education.

“Thanks to the DuPage County Chairman and Board, we are pleased to offer our community partners additional funding that impacts our residents at a time when we know they need assistance most,” said Greg Hart, HOPE Taskforce Co-chair.

Editor’s note: Villa Park native and former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan died on Sunday, June 12.

His family released the following statement on Sunday evening: Former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan passed away peacefully at home on June 12 at the age of 76 after several lengthy illnesses.

Ryan’s considerable accomplishments as a public official and earlier as a Golden Gloves boxing champion were dwarfed by the inspirational power of his perseverance and strength through faith in the midst of a string of devastating personal tragedies and challenges.

Ryan endured the death of two of his six children, nearly lost his beloved wife of 54 years to a heart attack, beat back cancer three times, and successfully recovered from heart surgery. Because he was a public figure, most of this pain was shouldered in the public eye, and his grace under duress was an inspiration to thousands of Illinoisans, many of whom he stayed in touch with over the years. Journalists sometimes

compared him to the Biblical figure of Job. Through it all, Ryan, a lifelong devout Roman Catholic, leaned hard on his faith and spoke of its power to lift him through it all. He had strong personal relationships with Cardinals Joseph Bernardin and Francis George of the Chicago Archdiocese and other clergy.

The other bedrock foundation of his life was his large and lively family, which he rarely was apart from up until his death. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Marie, four children, John (Stacie), Jim (Jennifer), Matthew (Melissa), and Amy. His youngest daughter Anne Marie died at age 12 in 1997 of an undiagnosed brain tumor, and Patrick, 24, died in 2007. He had 11 grandchildren: Caitlyn, Joey, Sarah, Grace, Emma, Stella, Elly, Sophie, Sam, Michael and Molly.

Pam Enzweiler-Pulice has been relentless in her desire to honor popular disc jockey and friend, Dick Biondi, and tonight, June 16, the Lemont Classic Car Club is hosting a benefit concert and classic car show to help raise funds for her documentary titled “The Voice That Rocked America: The Dick Biondi Story.”

Enzweiler-Pulice, a former Villa Park resident and Willowbrook High School graduate, has been passionately pursuing her longtime dream of paying homage to the legendary WLS personality Biondi, known as “The Wild I-tralion,” whose name is symbolic for the Baby Boomers who grew up listening to rock and roll during the 1960s.

“The moment I heard him on the radio I was hooked,” she recalled, adding that she remembers first meeting the DJ at the Hillside shopping mall in 1961, when he came in on a helicopter.

“I was shocked when I found out how nice he was,” Enzweiler-Pulice continued, and after that encounter she started a “grass-roots” Dick Biondi Fan Club at Jackson Junior High School, where she handed out autographed pictures and created a newsletter informing fans about where the DJ would be making appearances around Chicagoland.

“I’ve been friends with him ever since,” she said, adding that she later decided he deserved a tribute for his longtime career “because he was such a warm, nice guy.”

Over the last eight years, many individuals and celebrities, such as disc jockeys, radio stations, bands from the 1960s, businesses and radio personalities have supported the effort.

Media critic Robert Feder even weighed in, quoted in Enzweiler-Pulice’s news release as saying, “There

probably isn’t a disc jockey in America who had a greater influence on generations of radio personalities who followed than Dick Biondi because of the power of his personality and the power of WLS radio, 50K watts clear channel, all across America.”

The filmmaker feels that same way, which is why she has been determined to keep her dream alive of seeing the project through, adding that of all the requests to make such a documentary, she believes hers was the only one he approved.

“He gave me the green light,” she related. “This is really quite an honor for me.”

Currently the film is in post-production, but the filmmaker said “Funding to make a documentary for broadcast television [her goal] takes a lot of money,” and she is hopeful the production will be able wrap up in the near future.

“This is my passion project,” Enzweiler-Pulice summed up.

“Cruising With The Legends of Rock” will be held Thursday, June 16, at Konows Farm, 16849 S. Cedar Road, Homer Glen. Gates open at 4 p.m. with music beginning at 5 p.m.

Jim Ryan was best known publicly as Illinois Attorney General from 1995-2003. He was the GOP nominee for Governor in 2002.

Ryan became Attorney General after winning the 1994 general election.

As Attorney General, he professionalized the office and after a few years was described by a prominent statewide newspaper as the most effective Attorney General in state history.

He easily won re-election in 1998 and continued transforming the office to fight violent crime, protect children from abuse, women from domestic violence, and consumers from fraud.

“Although it was his life’s work, Jim never really felt comfortable in the field of politics,” said Stephen Culliton, a former chief judge in DuPage County and a 50-year friend of Ryan’s.

“He always strived to do the right thing and to help make life a little better for others. And when the inevitable conflicts arose between the politically beneficial thing and the ‘right’ thing, he always did the right thing. His honesty was a beacon for all of us who worked with him. He will be greatly missed.”

Another who worked closely with Jim Ryan had similar sentiments.

“Jim was too honest and authentic for a career in politics but he was as good a public servant as Illinois has ever known,” said John Pearman, a longtime top aide for Ryan in the Attorney General’s office. “He never stopped trying to help people -- women, children, crime victims. He was tireless and incorruptible.”

After he lost the Governor’s race, Jim founded The Center for Civic Leadership at Benedictine University in Lisle. He passionately believed that schools needed to do more to engage students in civic life and to engage politically in a civil manner.

Jim was vocal in speaking out publicly on mental illness and Jim and Marie have quietly counseled hundreds of families dealing with cancer and other hardships.

Prior to becoming Attorney General, Ryan served 10 years as DuPage County State’s Attorney. For eight years prior to that, Ryan was in private practice in DuPage County, after initially serving in the State’s Attorney’s office as an Assistant State’s Attorney and First Assistant State’s Attorney.

Jim Ryan was born to his parents Edward and Elissa on February 21, 1946, in Chicago. He often said his father was his hero. Edward was an Irish American home builder and Elisa was a homemaker who immigrated from Italy as a child. Jim and his two younger sisters, Maria, and Peggy, grew up in the home their father built in Villa Park. Ryan attended a local Catholic high school, St. Procopius Academy (now Benet Academy). He graduated from Illinois Benedictine College (now Benedictine University) in 1968, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. In 1971, he received his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law. As a 17-year-old high school student Ryan won the middleweight title in the Chicago Golden Gloves novice division. Ryan was a lifelong boxing fan who shared his passion for the sport with his sons and grandchildren, some of whom won titles of their own.

In 2013, with Ryan in his corner, his grandson Joey won the Chicago Golden Gloves.

“From the time I met him until his death, Jimmy always was striving to do the right thing and to help people,” said his wife Marie. “That was who he was and he was very successful at it.”

Single probable case of monkeypox reported in DuPage County The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is investigating a single case of monkeypox virus infection in an adult male with international travel in the past month to a country which has also reported monkeypox cases recently.

Initial testing was completed on Friday, June 10 at an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Laboratory.

Confirmatory testing is pending at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Based on initial epidemiologic characteristics and the positive orthopox virus result at IDPH, health officials consider this a probable monkeypox infection.

The DCHD and IDPH are working closely with the CDC, the patient, and the patient’s health care providers to identify individuals with whom the patient may have been in contact while they were infectious. This contact tracing approach is appropriate given the

nature and transmission of the virus, and to coordinate timely risk assessment and appropriate post-exposure response.

At this time, DCHD has not identified any additional cases in the county.

To protect patient confidentiality, no further details relating to the patient will be disclosed.

The case remains isolated and at this time there is no indication there is a great risk of extensive local spread of the virus, as monkeypox does not spread as easily as the COVID-19 virus. Person-to-person transmission is possible through close physical contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores (clothing, bedding, etc.), or through respiratory droplets following prolonged face-to-face contact.

Since Saturday, May 14, clusters of monkeypox cases have been reported

in several countries that don’t normally have monkeypox. On Friday, May 20, the CDC issued a Health Advisory regarding recent cases in the United States. As of Friday, June 10, the CDC reports 49 confirmed cases of orthopox/monkeypox across 16 states, including Illinois.

More about monkeypox Monkeypox is a rare, but potentially serious viral illness, which belongs to the Orthopox virus family, and typically begins with flu-like symptoms and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses to a rash on the face and body.

Most infections last 2 to 4 weeks.

Monkeypox is typically endemic to parts of central and west Africa, and people can be exposed through bites or scratches from rodents and small mammals, preparing wild game, or having contact with an infected animal or possibly animal products. It’s not

clear how the people were exposed to monkeypox, but early data suggest that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men make up a high number of cases.

However, anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk. Public health officials are urging healthcare providers in the U.S. to be alert for patients who have rash illnesses consistent with monkeypox, regardless of whether they have travel or specific risk factors for monkeypox and regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

When to seek a healthcare provider Anyone with a rash that looks like monkeypox should talk to their healthcare provider, even if they don’t think they had contact with someone who has monkeypox.

People who may be at higher risk

might include but are not limited to those who: 1. Had contact with someone who had a rash that looks like monkeypox or someone who was diagnosed with confirmed or probable monkeypox; 2. Had skin-to-skin contact with someone in a social network experiencing monkeypox activity, this includes men who have sex with men who meet partners through an online website, digital application (“app”), or social event (e.g., a bar or party); 3. Traveled outside the U.S. to a country with confirmed cases of monkeypox or where monkeypox activity has been ongoing; 4. Had contact with a dead or live wild animal or exotic pet that exists only in Africa or used a product derived from such animals (e.g., game meat, creams, lotions, powders, etc.).

Pritzker announces progress in processing rape case evidence; signs highway camera expansion CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

The Illinois State Police announced June 3 that all sexual assault evidence is being processed within the 180-day timeframe outlined in state law— bringing to zero the number of legally “backlogged” cases that rose as high as 1,815 in March 2019.

It’s the first time all such evidence is being processed within 180 days as required by a 2010 law, according to the governor’s office.

“We have finally reached this mark that the General Assembly put down, this mark of 180 days, over a decade ago. Complying with that, and finally getting under 180 days, is just the first phase of that enterprise and we are going to be holding ourselves accountable to reaching the 90-day mark in the next phase,” Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said at a news conference.

Pritzker joined Kelly and local elected officials in Belleville, where ISP is establishing the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Institute to house a portion of the ISP forensic science training program.

The governor’s office said over the past two years, ISP reduced its total forensic backlog by 72 percent, while the backlog in drug chemistry evidence processing decreased by 90 percent from Feb. 2019 to the end of 2021.

Kelly said ISP has a goal of bringing a sense of closure to crime victims by processing the evidence that may lead to an arrest.

Previously, ISP received a $12.5 million grant to bring the number of cameras on Chicago expressways to 300, starting on the Dan Ryan expressway.

While an added 6,300 miles of roadway—on top of about 230 miles in the pilot program—will be eligible for cameras under the expanded program, the new legislation contains no guidance for which roadways would

receive them.

The budget contains $20 million from the Road Fund for the expansion.

House Bill 260 allows police to use camera footage to also investigate hijacking and forcible felonies such as murder, criminal sexual assault, robbery, burglary, arson, kidnapping and aggravated battery.

Previous law only allowed the footage to be used to investigate firearm offenses and to monitor roadway conditions.

The expansion also gives the attorney general’s office authority to prosecute forcible felony, gunrunning and firearms offenses on camera-monitored expressways.

This year’s raise to $250 is the first increase to the base pay rate for DuPage County election judges in decades.

Mariners open season with a home win over Butterfield Saturday’s competition marks Villa Park’s first traditional meet in three years

The Villa Park Mariners opened their 2022 DuPage Swim and Dive Conference season with Saturday’s meet against the Butterfield Bullfrogs at Jefferson Pool.

The Mariners earned a narrow 299-285 victory in the team standings of the meet, which was the program’s first traditional meet since 2019.

The entire 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 DuPage Swim and Dive Conference season featured virtual meets, with each team swimming at its own pool.

Villa Park’s individual champions in Saturday’s meet included Naomi Aldana, who won three races in the 13-14 girls level. Those victories came in the 100-meter individual medley (in a finishing time of 1 minute, 22.27 seconds), the 100-meter freestyle (1:11.21) and the 50-meter breaststroke (45.49 seconds).

Lydia Aldana won two races in the 9-10 girls division, swimming to first-place finishes in the 100-meter freestyle (1:51.10) and the 50-meter breaststroke (1:01.60). Elin Stempel also won two races for the Mariners in the 9-10 girls age level. She earned her victories in the 100-meter individual medley (1:56.62) and the 50-meter backstroke (50.23).

Phoebe Aldana provided two wins in the 11-12 girls division, delivering first-place swims in the 50-meter butterfly (46.91) and the 50-meter breaststroke (51.38).

Bennett Vea won a pair of individual races for the Mariners in the 11-12 boys level. He claimed his victories in the 100-meter individual medley (1:35.58) and the 50-meter breaststroke (52.28).

Villa Park’s Jack Brisbois earned two victories in the 13-14 boys division, winning the 50-meter freestyle (34.50) and the 50-meter butterfly (40.72).

Ian Mueller also provided the Mariners with two wins in the 13-14 boys level; he claimed his victories in the 100-meter individual medley (1:27.93) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:21.52).

Alexander Dean of the Mariners won a pair of individual races in the 15-18 boys division. He earned first-place finishes in the 100-meter individual medley (1:17.36) and the 50-meter backstroke (37.02).

Hearing on gun violence epidemic and passage of Protecting Our Kids Act

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Last week, I participated in House Oversight Committee’s hearing on the gun violence and mass shootings which have plagued our country.

During the hearing, we heard from witnesses who have been touched firsthand by the horrors of gun violence, including Felix Rubio and Kimberly Mata-Rubio, who lost their daughter, Lexi, in the massacre in Uvalde, Texas; and Zeneta Everhart, who nearly lost her son, Zaire, after a white supremacist opened fire at the grocery store in Buffalo.

As I told Anna Cabrera on CNN after the hearing, an overwhelming majority of Americans agree that action must be taken to reform our gun violence and stop the next attack, even as the gun lobby works to prevent those efforts.

Later in the day, I was proud to join my colleagues in the House in passing the Protecting Our Kids Act, which included raising the minimum age to buy a semiautomatic weapon to 21, outlawing high-capacity magazines and cracking down on gun trafficking.

I was proud to cast my vote in favor of keeping our children safe from the threat of gun violence and the work to carry new reforms through to the Senate and the President’s signature is imperative.

comes at a time when bigoted efforts including Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law are emerging across the country.

As a co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act that passed the House last year, I am committed to speaking out and fighting back against the discriminatory laws threatening LGBTQ+ rights across the country.

Letter to President Biden about the need to eliminate oil refinery bottlenecks by any means necessary Recently, I wrote to President Joe Biden urging him to take immediate action on the current shortage of oil refining capacity, which has contributed to Americans paying near-record prices at the pump.

In my letter, I urged President Biden to take swift and decisive action to address this problem, including invoking the Defense Production Act to increase our refinery capacity by compelling oil companies to bring idle oil refineries back online to eliminate the supply chain bottleneck that’s contributing to high gas prices.

This follows my other ongoing efforts to reduce gas prices.

In early May, I opened an investigation into several major oil companies exploring the link between their record profits and the billions of dollars in federal funding these corporations receive from taxpayers under the auspices of reducing prices at the pump.

This, along with the legislation passed by the House to combat price gouging by these same companies is still not enough for immediate relief desperately needed by Americans and it’s time we take an all-hands-on-deck approach. That means boosting our refinery capacity, and I hope President Biden takes the necessary steps immediately.

Dear Thom, Hey honey. I sure do miss you.

More than you can ever know, but I think you do, because I know you are close. I sense and feel your closeness.

It’s been a year-and-a-half since you left this physical earth, and I’m doing better every day. Well, most days. We’re all allowed to have an off day every so often. But, by and large, I’m doing better.

Today I put on a dress that I hadn’t worn for awhile and found a tissue in the pocket. It made me realize that at some point I quit carrying tissues with me everywhere. It used to be a staple in my wardrobe—pockets and a tissue—because I never knew when I’d break out in spontaneous, uncontrolled and unadulterated tears.

For the most part, I can now contain my crying to private moments. It’s a step forward.

I know you applaud my victories, no matter how small. You are my biggest cheerleader.

Currently, my days pass by. I have new routines. They are becoming comfortable and sometimes it’s hard for me to remember what my days— and life—were like before, when you were here. It’s almost as though they are something I might have dreamed about, like they aren’t real. I wonder, sometimes, if you ever really were here at all. Maybe I made it up in my imagination. Maybe everything we

Pritzker willing to call out National Guard to Chicago, if asked Shootings of Chicago police officers prompt calls for crackdown, gun reform

Gov. JB Pritzker indicated last week he would be willing to deploy the National Guard to help deal with a violent crime spree in Chicago, but only if he’s asked to do so.

“Well, I think you know that I have called up the National Guard whenever local mayors that I’ve spoken to have wanted that done, have needed that done in their local communities,” Pritzker said at a news conference.

“And I’ll continue to make the National Guard available whenever it is necessary.”

His comments came when reporters asked him to respond to a statement from Republican gubernatorial candidate Jesse Sullivan, who called on the Democratic incumbent to issue a disaster declaration in Chicago and deploy the National Guard to help quell the city’s violence.

“Somehow, 28 months in (to the pandemic), JB Pritzker is still signing monthly COVID disaster proclamations, but he is unwilling or unable to act on an even more pressing crisis—the senseless violence ravaging the streets of Chicago,” Sullivan, a venture capitalist from Petersburg, said in a statement. “If Pritzker says that COVID is still an emergency but police shootings aren’t, he needs to open his eyes.”

Sullivan’s statement came after

two Chicago police officers and a deputy U.S. marshal were shot and wounded in the city in less than a week.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the most recent shooting of an officer happened June 5 in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s south side where an officer was shot and wounded during a brief exchange of gunfire following a traffic stop.

On Wednesday, June 1, a female officer was shot and wounded in that same neighborhood while attempting to make a traffic stop.

And on June 2, a U.S. marshals officer and a police dog were shot and wounded while trying to make an arrest on the city’s northwest side.

According to statistics from the Chicago Police Department, as of June 6, there had been 232 murders in the city so far this year and 952 shooting incidents. And while those numbers are down from the same period last year, the overall rate of major crimes in the city is up 35 percent.

In a statement, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the recent shootings highlight the need for stronger federal action on gun control.

“Let me say again, every single day, on every watch, our brave men and women of the Chicago Police Department risk their lives for our safety,” she said. “But I must ask again, when is enough, enough?

Are we not fed up with the catastrophic consequences of having too many illegal guns readily available to criminals, the mentally ill, and juveniles? How many times must I, and my fellow mayors across the country, plead with the Senate to take action and end the easy access to illegal guns?”

The crime rate in Illinois, and Chicago in particular, has become a major issue in this year’s race for governor where Pritzker is campaigning for reelection against a field of Republicans who have been critical of his record on public safety. Republicans will choose their candidate in the June 28 primary.

Most notably, GOP candidates have criticized him for signing the 2021 criminal justice reform bill known as the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today, or SAFE-T Act, which, among other things, ends the use of cash bail starting Jan. 1, 2023, expands the rights of people held in jail or detained by law enforcement, establishes new certification and decertification standards for officers, imposes new use-of-force standards and expands the use of police body cameras.

Even though many provisions of that law have not yet taken effect, Republicans have nevertheless tried to blame it for the rising crime rate and for a large number of resignations and early retirements of law enforcement officers through-

out the state.

But speaking at another media event June 6 in Chicago, Pritzker defended his record in supporting law enforcement.

“I want to remind you that we’ve made major investments in support of police, in particular in building back our Illinois State Police, which provides so many officers to back up Chicago Police Department, as well as police departments all over our state,” he said.

Pritzker went on to say that he

also has called out National Guard forces whenever he was asked to do so by local officials, including the city of Aurora after being asked to do so by its mayor, Richard Irvin, who is also a Republican candidate for governor.

“And I will tell you that I have never hesitated when asked by local law enforcement by local mayors to provide help from the National Guard,” he said. “I’ve never, ever hesitated to do that. I’ve done that several times.”

Police Chief Michael Ruth laid to rest

Law enforcement from around the state turn out to bid farewell

Downtown Elmhurst was turned into a parade of shiny vehicles decked in blinking lights on the morning of Friday, June 10 as law enforcement officials from a host of cities and villages came together to bid farewell to one of their own.

Later that day, Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth was laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park following a 44-year career in law enforcement. He died peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones, but he was sent off with a cavalcade of officials from throughout the local area, the surrounding counties and the state of Illinois.

Familiar faces came out to offer their condolences including former Police Chiefs John Millner and Steve Neubauer. Besides current Elmhurst Mayor Scott Levin, former mayors Steve Morley and Pete DiCianni were on hand to offer their regards as well.

Ruth had formerly served as Chief of Police at Skokie and Countryside, so it wasn’t a surprise to see those departments represented.

Numerous other municipalities participated as well. Among them were Bensenville, Palos Heights, Warrenville, Riverside, Stone Park, Melrose Park, Franklin Park, Schiller Park, Waukegan and more, along with as officers from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police.

The ceremony began with the posting of the colors by the color guards of both the Elmhurst and the Skokie police departments. Elmhurst Deputy Chief of Police Michael McLean took the podium and spoke a few words before introducing Rev. Tim Perry, who led the invocation.

Other speakers included Mayor Levin, followed by Burr Ridge Police Chief John W. Madden, retired Police Chief Barry Silverberg of Skokie, current Skokie Police Chief Patrick Panizo and Denis Chapin, a close friend of the Ruth family.

In a moving moment, the Du-Comm Public Safety Communications shared Chief Ruth’s last radio call.

A caller on June 2 says his or her 18-year-old son joined the Marines.

That young man was trained to use weapons of war for specific purpose: to defend our nation. Most 18-yearolds are not prepared to use weapons, such as assault rifles, responsibly.

Why do they need to own one? And don’t tell me it’s to defend our nation. Hogwash. It’s a sad fact of life that schools have to be locked down but 18-year-olds don’t have to have access to assault rifles, plain and simple. It’s not about mental health either. It’s about maturity, responsibility and brain development. *** I agree with the decision by the attorney general and the Justice Department to form a specialized unit to focus on domestic terrorism. I’ve lost count of how many crisis pregnancy centers have been vandalized or firebombed since the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion on Roe vs. Wade, but something tells me vandalizing or firebombing crisis pregnancy centers doesn’t fit this particular Justice Department’s definition of domestic terrorism. By the way, about that leaked Supreme Court draft, isn’t it interesting that the person, or persons, who leaked the draft has not been found yet? It’s been well over a month. *** I couldn’t agree more with the caller (June 9 issue) who took the billionaire Ken Griffin to task for donating $50 million to Richard Irvin’s campaign. Imagine the good that $50 million could do to help the poor and homeless. The same can be said for the billionaire who currently occupies the governor’s mansion.

He spent $171 million of his own money to run for governor in 2018, and $56.5 million of his own money to support the fair tax amendment in 2020 that failed. Pritzker earlier this year put $90 million of his own money into his reelection campaign.

Add it all up and that’s $317.5 million. Think of all the good that money could have done to help the poor instead of spending it all on his political ambitions. *** When it comes to the push for electric cars, I am all in except for the following reasons: It is hypocritical to think charging them is not going to suck up lots of electricity; the cost of chargers for the home or elsewhere (remember when air was free at gas stations?); the cost of, and disposal of, used batteries; the costs that will be passed on to consumers for the license plate and I’m sure other ways we will be taxed for using the roads

that may offset any savings on gas.

Then there is the cost of the vehicle itself. No amount of “rebate” will make such a car affordable to me. *** CBS News Chicago did a breakdown of gas prices recently and besides local and county taxes, 39 cents go to the state, 18 cents to the federal government and Illinois charges a 6.25-percent tax on top of that. The gas station owner is lucky to get 2530 cents, and the rest goes to oil companies. The report also said that the Midwest’s gas inventory is currently low. Our governor said he was going to “freeze” any rate increase, but the state is already double-dipping with its gas tax and percent tax. When are we as a collective voice going to demand relief? We need to flood our state representatives with complaints, pleas, whatever it takes to get immediate relief from what I believe is a crisis for many workers. Gas to get to work or food on the table? And for our federal representatives, please consider looking at capping the level at which oil companies can continue profiting. This is hurting so many people whose wages are not keeping up with inflation, so for once, I think big government needs to step in. *** A lot of us tried to warn voters about Joe Biden. We told you what would happen. High gas prices, runaway spending, caving to the leftist agenda, incompetence, etc. Who still approves of Biden’s job performance? I’m guessing the ones who still approve of him are the ones who wear masks while they’re alone in their cars. *** Someone I talked to had a very good idea when it comes to voting for the right candidates: Elect those candidates who will cut and freeze salaries and pare down the number of six-figure incomes in local government offices, schools, etc. I know the “reasoning” is they want to hire the best, but these are civil service jobs, not corporate America. And what are we paying school superintendents the big bucks for if they have so many “assistants superintendents” to delegate to? Or assistant administrators in the villages, who also have assistants? These bodies must make cuts just like we have to eliminate any luxury, and they can still provide a good education or manage our villages. This person also mentioned eliminating townships, as Illinois has some of the highest number of government entities in the country. Just look up the salaries in York Township alone.

*** I have heard the Democratic Party has been nominated for a Tony award for political theater. *** I don’t know about anyone else, but my life has not gotten any better since this administration has been in office. People, wake up; these policies are not working. They are designed to crush the middle class.

The status quo of voting for the Democratic Party needs to change.

We need to oust Sean, Raja, Dick, Tammy and all the way down to Terra. Let’s at least try a change because these current politicians are doing nothing to help us. They continue to put up a new shiny object to distract from their failures. Vote all of them out. *** Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Maybe instead of focusing on Trump, think about how angry his supporters were at the outcome of the election, and taking out their frustration, as misdirected and unacceptable as it was.

protesters to “storm” the streets to loot, rob, burn and destroy people’s businesses; their means of livelihood? *** We’re dealing with record-high gas prices, runaway inflation, rising crime, chaos at the border with Mexico, a tanking stock market, a baby formula shortage and fears of food shortages and power outages this summer. And Biden is wondering why he isn’t more popular? *** I know school is over for this year.

However, coming up this fall, I think we need to see more police around our schools. I rarely saw any cop cars in our neighborhood this year.

The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department and the Villa Park Sportsmen’s Club held Saturday’s Family Fishing Derby at North Terrace Park. The Villa Park Sportsmen’s Club provided prizes (including rods, reels and tackle boxes) in several categories, including the largest fish caught and the most fish caught. One photo (left) shows Sofia Rizvi with her brother Kashif (age 5). Sofia, who is about to celebrate her 13th birthday, won a prize for catching the largest fish—a 19inch bass—during the derby. Another photo (above) shows Sofia and Kashif’s brother—Saifan Rizvi (age 10), with their grandfather—Jerry Dyer of Villa Park. Saifan caught a 15½-inch bass during the derby. Dyer, who is a lifelong Villa Park resident, noted that he caught his first fish at North Terrace Park when he was 5 years old.
