The skate park near Villa Park’s Iowa Community Center opened for the season last week. The area had been closed this spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In early May, village staff placed wood chips inside the skate park after receiving numerous complaints about skateboarders using the facility. The village removed the wood chips, and the skate park opened on Thursday, June 4. “We remind skateboarders to practice social distancing, using proper hygiene and wash/sanitize hands whenever practicable,” stated a release issued by the village last week. “Only 10 skaters will be allowed use of the park at one time. Failure to adhere to the state’s health guidelines may result in closure of the park. If you are feeling sick, please stay home!”

State’s Attorney encourages peaceful protests, cautions against violence

Speech Language Hearing Clinic to offer free teletherapy

This summer, the Elmhurst Speech Language Hearing Clinic at Elmhurst College will offer free speech and language evaluations and therapy through teletherapy.

Beginning on June 15 and extending into July, the speech and language interventions will be provided via teletherapy to individual children and adults of all ages who are unable to see a clinician in person due to concerns about COVID-19.

All therapy will be provided by Elmhurst College graduate students who are enrolled in the Communication Sciences and Disorders master’s degree program. All sessions will be supervised by speech-language pathologists, who are fully licensed in Illinois and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

The six-week summer session will begin on Monday, June 15, and will end on Friday, July 24. Interested clients can send an email at speechclinic@elmhurst.edu for more information or to make a free telepractice appointment.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, there were 8,120 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 401 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 50 new cases including four deaths in persons with COVID-19 infection reported. Deaths included a male in his 30s, a male in his 40s, a male in his 60s and one male in his 80s.

Elmhurst Hospital is treating 43 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19. Elmhurst Hospital has had 51 deaths of inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19. Since March 24, 345 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Village president reports no looting in Villa Park; thanks police for their dedication

Villa Park Village President Albert Bulthuis issued a message to members of the village community last week regarding recent protests in nearby municipalities.

“In the past few nights, a number of peaceful gatherings took place in our neighboring communities in response to the disturbing death of George Floyd in Minneapolis,” stated Bulthuis in his June 3 message.

“Unfortunately, some individuals used these protests as an opportunity to engage in criminal activity.”

Bulthuis added that there had been no incidents of looting in Villa Park.

“Contrary to some reports on social media, there has been no looting in our community to date,” noted Bulthuis. “In an abundance of caution, some local businesses have cho-

The DuPage County Health Department has recorded over 8,100 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county.

As of June 7, the health department indicated 8,120 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, including 401 deaths.

The health department’s June 7 update showed 219 confirmed cases in Villa Park residents, including three deaths.

The health department’s update of May 31 indicated 371 deaths related to COVID-19. The May 25 update showed 338 deaths, while the May 17 report indicated 296 deaths. The May 10 report listed 248 deaths related to the virus.

According to the June 7 report, 236 of the county’s 401 deaths related to COVID-19 involved residents 80 and older. There were 93 deaths involving residents in the 70-79 age group, and 46 deaths in the 60-69 age group. About 82 percent of the county’s death’s related to COVID-19 have involved residents 70 and older, while over 93 percent of the deaths have involved residents 60 and older.

The first COVID-19 related death in the county was reported on March 19.

The DuPage County Health Department has stated that the number of positive COVID-19 cases is likely much higher than listed because of unreported or untested cases in the community.

According to the Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) update on June 7, there were 5,904 COVID-19 related deaths in the state. The IDPH reported nearly 128,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state, with more than 1,040,000 tests for the virus performed.

According to the IDPH, 2,633 of the state’s 5,904 deaths related to COVID-19 have involved residents 80 and older, while 1,433 deaths have involved residents in the 70-79 age group. There have been 1,042 deaths related to the virus among Illinois residents in the 60-69 age group.

More than 86 percent of all COVID-19 related deaths in the state, therefore, have involved residents 60 and older. About 69 percent of the state’s COVID-19 related deaths have involved residents 70 and older.

Villa Park to resume its electronics recycling events on June 20 Free drop-off is only for village residents; one TV permitted per visit

The Village of Villa Park will resume its monthly electronics recycling collections this month.

The village will conduct its next electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 20.

The event will take place at the village’s public works garage, located at 20 W. Home Ave. Drop-off events typically are held on the third Saturday of each month. The last three monthly events (March 21, April 18 and May 16), however, were canceled

because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The free service is only available to Villa Park residents, who are asked to have identification ready. Only one television may be dropped off per visit.

Illinois law prohibits electronic devices from being collected for disposal in Illinois landfills.

The Village of Villa Park is coordinating with its refuse disposal provider—Roy Strom—to collect electronics items generated by residents and local businesses.

Village’s parks and recreation department announces reopening Program registration is available online

The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department recently announced it is excited to begin to reopen during Phase 3 of the state’s Restore Illinois Plan.

The department’s Funtime Junction daycare program is open. Starting June 15, the following programs

will be available: Adventure Camp, Junior Adventure Camp, Mini Camp, Discover Dance, Fitness, Golf, Martial Arts, T’ai Chi, T-Ball League, Yoga/Yoga in the Park and Youth Sports.

Registration for the adult softball league is also being accepted. Softball is scheduled to begin in July during Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois Plan.

The Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department reminds residents that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Restore Illinois Plan, recreation programs and schedules will be updated frequently.

This is Villa Park calling. I drive through Villa Park and Lombard going north and south all different times of the day and during the course of the week, numerous times a day, there is a freight train stopped, blocking the roads in Villa Park; Villa, Ardmore and Addison. I’ve never seen it block any roads in Lombard. Can somebody please investigate this, from the paper, possibly, and call the train company and find out why they’re only blocking Villa Park? Are we a dumping ground for them that they can block our traffic? There has to be a better solution to this.

Village of Villa Park officials responded: “The Village of Villa Park has no control/input on which trains travel through our village, nor where they stop. Late last year the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) launched a dedicated site for users to report blocked crossings—including date, time, location and duration. The website is: http://www.fra.dot.gov/ blockedcrossings.

“The FRA will use the information collected to gain a more complete picture of when, where and for how long such obstructions occur. The information will be used to help facilitate local solutions to blocked crossing issues. We recommend filling out the form whenever you experience these delays as filling out the form can help bring

awareness to these issues in our Village.”

I don’t think many of the village residents who have experienced flooding in recent days would agree that the village belongs on any such list. Some of the residents who spoke at the last village board meeting were pretty upset, and for good reason. These people pay their taxes and are trying to raise families, but they’re not getting much assistance from the village. *** The hatred from Democrats that I have seen and experienced over the last few months is unlike anything I have ever seen in my life. them is not violence. On CNN, another person said Trump is stifling First Amendment rights because he wants to bring in the military, and also that he wants to keep the protests and rioting going so he can exert his power. Who’s drinking the Kool Aid now? *** Like every other American citizen, Tom Cullerton has the right to remain silent. He’s definitely been exercising that right since he was indicted last year. I get that he and all other Americans are innocent until proven guilty, but has he been able to do his job effectively in the last year?

Before he was indicted, he seemed to like the limelight. Since then, he’s been practically invisible, perhaps because he’s been advised to avoid any comments on his legal issues. *** If you poke the bear and the bear bites you, what did you expect? Do you blame the bear? The rioters who instigated and threw who knows what at police, and taunted them, then turned around and cried police brutality. These are not the peaceful protesters Martin Luther King Jr. would have been proud of. *** Orange man bad is not a campaign. The party for change is nominating an old white man (referring to Joe Biden) who has issues and may not make his full term. I would rather have a president that stands up for citizens rather than the socialistic polices of the left. We are getting a taste of government rule with COVID-19 and the riots. *** I feel sorry for these poor restaurant owners in town. All the hoops they’ve had to jump through while this billionaire governor dictates his executive orders and plays roulette with their restaurants. Now they’ve had to set up tables and umbrellas or tents to serve customers outside.

What a disgrace! *** One of the most foolish and ignorant statements I’ve heard throughout all the tragic looting, arson and violence that’s been happening across the country was made by the Massachusetts Attorney General, Maura Healey. She said, “America is burning, but that’s how forests grow.” Try telling that to the business owners who’ve put their heart and soul into a business only to see it burnt to the ground. Many of these business owners that had their places looted or set on fire are minorities. I wonder how some of these clueless politicians like Ms. Healy would feel if the shoe was on the other foot, and their livelihood was suddenly taken away from them. *** Why didn’t Pelosi, Schumer and Obama pass legislation for police reform when Obama was in office and they controlled both House and Senate? How is Joe Biden going to be savior when he pushed the criminal reform in 1994? Why is this Trump’s fault? Open your eyes people. *** What happened in Minnesota was tragic. The police were wrong. Pro-

testing is a constitutional right. Looting, rioting and property damage is not. We need to look at the facts, learn from this on move forward.

There were 41 unarmed suspects killed by the police in 2019. Only nine were African American. This is not an epidemic by police. But policing needs to wake up and increase training and eliminate bad practices that result in tragedy. The leaders in this state need to step up and stop all of this and quit politicizing this senseless death. Their duty is to protect us and use all resources to bring this to an end, now. *** You get what you pay for. You also get what you vote for. How have Democratic governors handled the COVID-19 pandemic? Not well.

Most of the COVID-19 deaths are in states run by Democrats. A lot of states, like Illinois, that are run by Democrats, are in poor financial condition. Also, Democratic governors have issued the most heavy-handed and severe COVID-19 lockdowns. They seem eager to punish hard-working taxpayers. They also seem eager to let convicted criminals out of jail. Democrats probably viewed the pandemic as a political opportunity. If so, they aren’t handling that opportunity very well. *** We’re all in this together, stay strong, stay healthy, all in Illinois, blah, blah, blah. I’m tired of all the cheerleading, and I’m tired of seeing libraries closed, playgrounds and recreational equipment roped off, pools closed, no summer programs or camps for the kids, businesses closing and all the summer festivals canceled. We might as well just cancel the rest of our lives. Everything revolves around this virus. *** I see the Minneapolis City Council has announced a veto-proof push to defund and disband the police and operate without law enforcement and invest in community-led public safety. Oh, this is brilliant. Anarchy will prevail, and criminals will have a field day.

Driver facilities open for limited services Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding the public that Driver Services facilities statewide are open to serve only new drivers, customers with expired driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle transactions.

Face masks are required. Currently there are more than 700,000 expired driver’s licenses/ID cards and 1.9 million expired vehicle registrations. White asked those who must visit facilities to be patient due to heavy volume.

Driver’s license/ID card and vehicle registration expirations extended until Oct. 1 White also reminded customers that his office extended expiration dates for driver’s licenses/ID cards and vehicle registration stickers until Oct. 1. This extension also covers those who have June and July expiration dates. As a result, expired documents will remain valid until Oct. 1 so customers do not need to rush into a facility.

Heavy customer volume expected; consider online services White noted that because facilities are expecting heavy customer volume, residents who can conduct business online are strongly encouraged to do so. Residents may go to www. cyberdriveillinois.com to take advantage of many online services—such as renewing vehicle registration stickers—

from the comfort of their own home. People who conduct online transactions will avoid waiting in line at a facility.

Some of these online services include: • renewing a vehicle registration; • obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card; • obtaining a driving record abstract; • renewing a driver’s license through the Safe Driver Renewal program.

Protective safety measures Customers and Secretary of State employees will be required to wear face masks. Plexiglass dividers have been installed at all work stations and tape has been applied to the floor in 6-foot intervals to follow social distancing guidelines, limiting the number of customers inside a facility at one time.

For drive tests, employees will wear face masks and face shields due to the close proximity with the customer inside the vehicle. Customers will be required to wear face masks.

Disposable plastic will be used to cover the vehicle seats during the drive test and then discarded immediately after the conclusion of the drive test.

“Throughout this pandemic, my commitment has been to

do everything we can to help protect the health and safety of our residents and my employees, while providing services to the people of Illinois,” said White. “This reopening plan adheres to this commitment.”

REAL ID federal extension White also reminded the public that the federal government extended the REAL ID deadline by one year until Oct.1, 2021.

White had petitioned the federal government for this extension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. People with valid U.S. passports are encouraged to consider delaying their visit to a facility to apply for a REAL ID until their driver’s license is near its expiration date.

Mazzochi rebukes Governor’s recent ‘power grab’ Files legislation to protect small businesses

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is challenging Governor J. B. Pritzker’s latest executive overreach. Once again circumventing the legislative process, the Governor’s most recent regulatory plan seeks to punish small business owners and their employees, even if they take appropriate COVID-19 precautions, because they refuse to stay closed.

“If the Governor wants to change the law, there is a process for that: go to the General Assembly and ultimately we, the people,” Rep. Mazzochi explained.

The Gubernatorial uproar resulted from his office’s last-minute submission of new rules to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules recently. These new regulatory rules criminalize certain classes of small

business owners who try to keep their doors open. Defying the Governor’s orders would punish people with a Class A misdemeanor, one step below a felony, which carries up to a $2500 fine and up to a year in prison.

The rule also seeks to improperly entice local law enforcement to enforce the order.

While the Governor claimed Illinois law permits his regulation, Mazzochi countered that his regulations eviscerate people’s existing due process protections. The Illinois Department of Public Health is prohibited from isolating a person or closing a business to the public without having either the affected person’s express consent or a court order, which can only issue if “no less restrictive alternative exists” to protect public health. The Illinois Emergency Man-

agement Act also prohibits the Governor from using any powers granted under that act to affect the responsibilities of local government’s police forces.

“Who voted to weaponize business licenses and utility hookups? Not us. Who voted to give the Governor power over county sheriffs through funding games? Not us,” said Mazzochi. “The Governor keeps concocting all these ways to deny people their rights with no due process while avoiding legislative accountability.

He needs to stop with the unilateral threats and trying to use state agencies as his heavyweights.”

Around 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 10, 2002 while biking near Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo I was struck by a taxi. I was in the crosswalk with the proper green light. The driver claimed he didn’t see me.

To this day I only know what happened based on what the paramedics told me. I know I was in the hospital for several days. I also remember what the paramedics said. If I had not been wearing a helmet I would be dead.

When I see families out biking with the kids wearing helmets I think

good for them. But when I see parents not wearing helmets, which is sadly often the case, I feel like shouting, “Parents where are YOUR helmets?”

Besides the obvious mixed message parents send by not wearing a helmet, I wonder if they give thought to what might happen to their kids who end up without Mom or Dad. The more cynical part of me thinks, “I hope those parents have a really good life insurance policy.”

So, wear a helmet - all of you!

Kissane celebrating 10 years as web host Back in 2009 comedian and actor Matt Kissane had just wrapped up his six years as a freelance writer and performer on the “WGN Morning News” and was looking for a new forum to display his comedic talents.

“I was really struggling to get some new creative content on the airwaves anywhere but was running into brick walls,” Kissane quipped.

“But then this little thing called Facebook popped up and I was like ... hmm!”

So, since then he has hosted a podcast called “Live From Chicago It’s Matt Kissane,” plus an on-camera version of the same name, Facebook Live interview show, and also another show called “On the Phone With Matt Kissane!”

“That one is a favorite of mine because I have always been really good on the phone.”

Kissane has had numerous local and national celebrities on his shows over the years including “Saturday Night Live” cast members George Wendt from “Cheers” and a parade of comedians like WGN staple Mike

Toomey and even Vic Dibetetto from “Paul Blart Mall Cop” films. Google Matt Kissane Podcasts, “Live From Chicago It’s Matt Kissane” or “On the Phone With Matt Kissane.”

Kissane will appear on the June edition of “The Gentlemen Grochowski” show on Comcast channel 19 at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays in June, and on the UHF station WJYS, channel 17, on July 4 at 2:30 a.m. The comedian will discuss his appearance in the A&E special Chris Farley “Anything For A Laugh” as well as working with NBC anchor Tom Brokaw.

He will also showcase his impersonations of Farley and Donald Trump. Kissane began his career in the media arts as an intern for NBC NEWS anchor Tom Brokaw in New York. He later went on to become a cast member on “WGN Morning News” and also a regular on Mancow TV on FOX. His acting career highlights include “Chicago Med,” “APB,” “Windy City Live” and the A&E Special Chris Farley “Anything For A Laugh.”

School districts will continue to provide free meals to students this summer Five days’ worth of food to be provided each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at two Villa Park schools; the next distribution is June 16 District 88 is continuing its ongoing partnership with District 45, Salt Creek School District 48, Addison School District 4, Arbor Management, Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to provide meals to students this summer. The same organizations provided meals to students for the last two months, while school buildings were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

vides meals free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18. Five days worth of food will be provided each Tuesday through August.

The next distribution of five days worth of food will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 16.

The area distribution sites include two Villa Park schools: Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave.; and Jefferson Middle School, 255 W. Vermont St.

Comedian and actor Matt Kissane has hosted a podcast called “Live From Chicago It’s Matt Kissane,” plus other online forums, going on 10 years now. He is known for his impersonation of Chris Farley’s Matt Foley, and also as Donald Trump.

Man charged with attempted terrorism at Lombard Municipal Campus DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced on Monday, June 1, that a Lombard man has been charged with one count of Possession of an Incendiary Device and one count of Attempt Terrorism, (both charges are a Class 1 Felony).

The man was arrested after allegedly approaching numerous city-owned squad cars armed with a “Molotov cocktail,” lighters and a bat. Christian Frazee, 25, of Lombard, appeared in Bond Court that afternoon where Judge Paul Marchese set bond at $1 million with 10% to apply.

On June 1 at approximately 12:27 a.m., a Lombard police officer allegedly observed a male dressed in all black wearing a hood, face covering and latex gloves walking near the Village Hall toward the direction of the Village of Lombard Municipal campus with a bat hanging from his bag. It is alleged that the subject, later identified as Frazee, was walking in the direction of the squad cars and employee vehicles holding a lighter in his left hand and a Molotov cocktail in his

right hand. It is further alleged that Frazee also had a butane torch lighter and seven additional lighters in his possession. Frazee was taken into custody at that time.

“The arrest of Mr. Frazee sends the message that in DuPage County we will not tolerate any attempt to utilize the legitimate protests currently occurring as a cover to commit any type of criminal behavior,” Berlin said. “Fortunately, the alert and quick actions of the Lombard Police Department stopped the potential loss of property and possible loss of human life. Make no mistake, through the cooperative efforts of all our law enforcement agencies, anyone who attempts to conduct themselves in such a manner will be caught, arrested and prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law.”

Frazee’s next court date is scheduled for June 29 for arraignment in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

IHSA announces guidelines to allow strength and conditioning sessions Sport-specific drills are prohibited; voluntary sessions can only include weightlifting, running and exercises designed to promote physical fitness The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors recently approved “Return to Play Guidelines” that will begin to allow the state’s high school student-athletes to return to participation after being sidelined for nearly three months by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Any Illinois high school that has approval from its district and is located within a health region in Phase 3 or better of the Restore Illinois Plan was able to begin implementing the “Return to Play Guidelines” on Saturday, June 6. All four of the state’s health regions recently entered Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan.

According to the IHSA, which oversees high school athletics in Illinois, its member schools were allowed to begin holding voluntary strength and conditioning sessions on Saturday, June 6. The IHSA encourages the sessions to be held outdoors. Students are limited to three hours of participation per day.

The requirements for the voluntary strength and conditioning sessions call for gatherings of 10 or fewer people, including a coach and medical personnel. The groups of 10 or less must be pre-determined, and social distancing—keeping at least 6 feet apart—must be observed. Masks must be worn when social distance cannot be maintained. Interaction between groups must be avoided.

Student-athletes are advised to bring their own water bottles and towels to workout sessions. The use of locker rooms, shared water coolers with cups and water fountains is prohibited.

Sessions can only include weightlifting, running and exercises designed to promote physical fitness.

Sport-specific drills are not permitted, and sport-specific equipment may not be used. If available, it is encouraged that an athletic trainer or medical personnel be available for

School-sponsored camps, clinics and open gyms are prohibited in any sport under the current guidelines.

All K-12 schools in Illinois have been closed to on-site instruction since the middle of March, when Gov. JB Pritzker issued the order to close the schools through March 30.

Pritzker went on to extend that closure through April 7, then through April 30. In mid-April, Pritzker announced that all K-12 schools in Illinois would be closed for the rest of the 2019-20 school year.

The closure wiped out the entire spring seasons for all of the state’s high school athletic teams. Most of those teams were preparing to begin their competitive seasons when school buildings closed. No IHSA member school organized any spring sports practices or games after Pritzker’s initial order to close the state’s schools.

According to information released by the IHSA on Friday, June 5, the “Return to Play Guidelines” were developed within the current structure of Pritzker’s Restore Illinois Plan.

The guidelines were developed by the IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

“Our kids have been without sports and school for over two months, which has taken a toll on their physical and emotional health,” said Dr. Cynthia R. LaBella, a member of the IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, in last week’s statement issued by the IHSA. “We purposely designed this first phase to focus solely on strength and conditioning so that kids can gradually rebuild their fitness levels in small peer groups with coaches’ guidance. This will get kids moving again with their peers in the safest way possible, which will have a huge positive impact on their physical and emotional well-being.”

The “Return to Play Guidelines” will remain in place until the IHSA or the IDPH announce further updates.

While the Governor’s latest move will lead to yet another court challenge, Rep. Mazzochi filed legislation this week to curb any further heavy-handed rulemaking. The legislation amends the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act, upon which the Governor’s Executive Orders rest, to limit his power to revoke or suspend occupational or professional licenses merely for failing to comply with the Governor’s COVID-19 orders.

“The bill restores due process by allowing state agencies to revoke li-

censes only if a court order has been obtained and notice has been provided to the relevant state legislators of the district in which the business or person resides,” she said.

Mazzochi emphasized that the lawmaking process must return to the General Assembly.

“The people of Illinois deserve the chance to stand up for their rights, and the General Assembly has the right to make the laws and vote on any plans the Governor has for our state.”

Last month, however, the Village of Villa Park announced that the pool would be closed for the entire season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The DuPage Swim and Dive Conference (DSDC), which includes the Mariners, announced last month that its 2020 season would be canceled. The DSDC announced its cancellation shortly before the Village of Villa Park stated that Jefferson Pool would be closed this year. The pool was supposed to be open through Labor Day—Monday, Sept. 7. Suzanne Earl, the village’s aquatic manager and athletic supervisor, recently noted that a staff of 32 part-time employees—mostly lifeguards—who worked at Jefferson Pool in 2019 had responded that they wanted to return to work during the 2020 season.

State allows summer school openings, opens testing to everyone

Summer schools can open with safety guidelines in place and state-run COVID-19 testing sites are now open to everyone.

The state made the latest two announcements as it encouraged anyone who has recently attended a mass protest to get tested for novel coronavirus disease.

“As we move forward, COVID-19 testing must be widely available and this is a step in that direction,” Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau said in a news release. “The state-operated community-based testing sites currently have the capacity to test more than 6,000 people per day, and now there will be no restrictions to who can be tested for this potentially deadly virus.”

Testing will be crucial as the state moves toward full reopening, the agency said in a news release.

Part of that reopening will include summer school for Pre-K to 12th grade students at public and non-public schools. The governor authorized reopening, which went into effect June 4, in an executive order, his 38th since the start of the pandemic.

Specific guidelines for reopening schools include limiting the number of people in one place to 10 or fewer, ensuring compliance with social distancing requirements and discouraging physical contact, ensuring appropriate hygiene practices such as washing hands and covering coughs and sneez-

Students, staff and visitors must wear face coverings, and schools must make disposable face coverings available to students who are over the age of two and medically able to wear such a covering.

The Illinois State Board of Education said in a guidance document it “would like to make clear that while Phase 3 allows for the resumption of face-to-face instruction, this is not the same as a return to pre-pandemic operations.”

“Extensive social distancing measures, enhanced sanitation measures, and other accommodations will be necessary to ensure the safety of students, staff, and their families,” according to the 29-page guidance document.

The IDPH has warned, however, that recent protests could lead to an uptick in virus numbers.

“As people gather in large crowds with varying degrees of social distancing, there is cause for concern about COVID-19 spread and outbreaks, especially if masks were not worn universally,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said in a news release. “I urge anyone who recently attended a rally, protest, or other mass gathering to get tested for COVID-19 so we can identify any cases early. We recommend testing 5-7 days after participating in large group rallies, or immediately if symptoms develop. If there are known cases, we can make sure those people are quarantined and not exposing other individuals.”

In a recent news release, the village reminded skateboarders who use the skate park to practice social distancing, use proper hygiene and wash/sanitize their hands whenever

practicable. The village also noted that only 10 skaters will be allowed use of the park at one time. Failure to adhere to the state’s health guidelines, warned the village, may result in closure of the park. The village’s release added that Villa Park playgrounds and youth sport activities offered by the village will remain closed until Phase 4 of Gov. JB Pritzker’s Restore Illinois Plan, or unless otherwise directed. All four of the state’s health regions recently entered Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan.
