District 88 holds Relay For Life Students raise more than $40,000 for the American Cancer Society

Willowbrook and Addison Trail recently showed giving back is a cornerstone of District 88 pride.

On March 14, the 11th annual Relay For Life of District 88 Youth event took place at Willowbrook, and more than 350 students and community members attended the relay. This year’s event raised $43,463 for the American Cancer Society. In total, this event has collected more than $700,000 during the last 11 years.

Participants enjoyed a variety of activities and games, and there also was a luminaria to honor more than

100 individuals who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battle with cancer. T The relay began by celebrating more than 12 survivors, as they walked the first lap around the track.

The top three teams with fundraising are: 1. Rais2e for a Cur3: $11,642 2. It’s Po22ible: $10,182 3. BLAZERS 2022: $6,182 Tad Tchop, a student in the District 88 Transition Program, continues to raise funds for the event. This year, he raised $3,553.80.

Warriors complete season with a loss to Lyons Township Lions beat Willowbrook in a regional final; Warriors close the season with a 14-7 record

The Willowbrook girls soccer team’s 2022 season ended with Friday’s 3-0 loss to Lyons Township in an IHSA Class 3A regional final in Western Springs.

The Warriors finished their season with an overall record of 14-7.

Playing on Lyons Township’s home field, the Warriors opened the post-season with an 8-1 win over Reavis in a regional semifinal on May 18.

Junior Kennedy Vannoy scored four goals for the Warriors in last week’s post-season victory over Reavis. Senior Brooke Vandergrift, junior Haley Preuss, senior Erin Fitzgibbon and sophomore Emma Anderlik contributed one goal each.

Vandergrift piled up three assists in Willowbrook’s win over Reavis.

Vannoy, senior Izzy Manning, senior Rachael Klamecki, freshman Emily Barth and sophomore Grace Soltys provided one assist each.

Facing the Lions on their own field in Friday’s regional final, the Warriors weren’t able to put the ball into the net. Lyons Township, which scored all three of its goals in the first half, advanced to this week’s Glenbard West Sectional following its win over the Warriors. Lyons Township is the sectional’s No. 1 seed.

Willowbrook’s baseball team completed its championship season in West Suburban Gold Conference play by sweeping last week’s three-game conference series against Proviso East. The Warriors posted three straight decisive victories over the Pirates to finish the conference season with a record of 15-3. Willowbrook, which claimed sole possession of the 2022 WSGC title, opened last week’s series with a 14-0, four-inning win at Proviso East on May 16. One day later, the Warriors beat the Pirates 16-1 in a four-inning contest in Villa Park. The Warriors finished their conference season with a 19-0, four-inning win over the Pirates in Villa Park on May 19.

Willowbrook will open the IHSA Class 4A post-season with this week’s game against Schaumburg at the Schaumburg Regional. If the Warriors defeat Schaumburg, they would face either Glenbard East or York in this Saturday’s regional final.

Senior Alex Simmons of the Willowbrook boys track and field team earned a berth in the upcoming IHSA Class 3A state meet when he ran to a sectional title last week.

Simmons earned his victory in the 400-meter run at the Glenbard North Sectional, which took place on May 19. Simmons completed the race in a first-place time of 50.55 seconds. He established a new personal record in the 400-meter run with his winning performance at the sectional.

The top two finishers in each sectional event, along with those who met qualifying standards, earned state-meet berths. The state meet takes place this week at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Simmons was the only Warrior to earn a state-meet berth at last week’s Glenbard North Sectional. Some other Warriors, however, turned in topfive finishes at the sectional. Sophomore Joe Hanson ran to a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash, which he completed in 11.06 seconds. Hanson delivered a fourth-place effort in the 200-meter run, which he finished in 23.21 seconds.

Junior Kevin Diederich produced a fifth-place showing in the 3200-meter run, which he negotiated in 10 minutes, 11.52 seconds. Senior Cayden Loth ran to a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Loth

“Now voters may cast their ballot conveniently at a polling place near their job or school, instead of rushing to or from their home precinct,” said DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek. “Best of all, DuPage voters will no longer be turned away on Election Day for being in the wrong polling place in the county.”

The permanent Vote-By-Mail application allows voters to receive a mail-in ballot for every election.

Until now, voters preferring mail-in ballots had to apply one election at a time. The year 2022 is the first-time permanent Vote-By-Mail is available in Illinois, after the Illinois General Assembly passed it into law last year.

Mail voting was expanded in Illinois in 2020 in response to COVID-19 so that voters could safely vote at home.

“Permanent Vote-By-Mail increases voting choices. Nothing else is taken away,” Kaczmarek said.

“Voters may still vote in person on Election Day or during Early Voting.

Also, voters may continue to choose a one-time-only mail ballot.”

DuPage voters preferring to sign up for permanent Vote-By-Mail or a single one-time-only mail ballot are urged to do so on the County Clerk’s Elections web site at dupagecounty. gov/Election/VoteByMail.

The first day of Early Voting at the DuPage County fairgrounds was Thursday, May 19. Starting Monday, June 13, 22 Early Voting sites will open – four more than in 2020 and double the number from 2018. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 28 with 263 polling places.

Analysis: Poll shows ‘undecided’ leads GOP governor field, followed by Irvin, Bailey

We’re a little over a month from the June 28 primary, and “undecided” was the lead vote-getter in a recent poll of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters, with 36.9 percent of respondents falling into that camp.

For those polled who have picked a candidate, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin had the lead at 24.1 percent, followed by state Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, at 19.8 percent, Gary Rabine at 7.8 percent, Jesse Sullivan at 7.3 percent, Max Solomon at 2.3 percent and Paul Schimpf at 1.9 percent.

The poll, by WGN-TV, The Hill and Emerson College, was conducted May 6-8, had a 3 percent margin of error, and methods included cellphone messaging, landline voice response and an online panel.

Bailey’s camp was quick to say it shows the primary “is a two-person race for the heart and soul of our Republican Party.”

Bailey, a former state representative and now state senator, gained notoriety by challenging Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive order authority in court throughout the pandemic alongside GOP attorney general candidate Thomas DeVore.

He has a staunch conservative voting record in the General Assembly and he’s also been jockeying for the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Per the poll, 57.4 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by Trump, while 18.8 percent said less likely and the

rest said it would make no difference.

The Irvin campaign, meanwhile, said it’s Democrats who are propagating Bailey’s campaign.

The Democratic Governors Association, to which Pritzker has donated millions from his personal fortune over the past five years, has paid for ads attacking Irvin’s record as a defense attorney.

Recently, the DGA also launched a new ad calling Bailey “too conservative for Illinois” while listing things that might play well in a GOP primary, such as his 100 percent anti-abortion voting record, his National Rifle Association membership and his support for the Trump agenda.

The Irvin campaign pegged the total combined spend of his opponents and outside groups in the GOP primary at $22 million, including $8 million directly attacking Irvin.

Irvin’s campaign has spent at least $12 million, backed by $45 million from GOP megadonor Ken Griffin, founder of the investment firm Citadel, who was a financial backer of Republican former Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Bailey’s biggest backer is another megadonor, Uline founder Richard Uihlein, who at one time backed Rauner but ended up funding his GOP primary challenger in 2018.

He’s given Bailey $3.5 million.

Thus, the DGA ad buys greatly expand Bailey’s statewide exposure.

State Rep. Willis highlights passage of cleft lip insurance bill State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, is celebrating the signing of her sponsored bill, HB 4349, into law by Governor JB Pritzker on Friday, May 13.

The new law requires private accident and health insurance policies, as well as state employee plans, to cover medically necessary care and treatment of cleft lip and palate for children under the age of 19.

“Cleft lip and palate is a common medical condition which affects hundreds of babies in the United States each year, dozens of whom will, on average, be born in Illinois,” said Rep. Willis. “This is a condition that is easily treatable with a simple surgery, but many insurance plans refused to cover it. This law corrects that.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a good

source for information on cleft lip and palate. Around 1 in 1,600 babies are born with some form of the condition, which is often disfiguring without treatment and can impact the ability to eat and to speak but is easily correctable with surgery.

“Children should not suffer from a common debilitating and disfiguring condition which is easily treatable,” said Willis. “Now every soon-to-be parent in Illinois can have the peace of mind of knowing that if their baby is one of those affected by cleft lip, treatment will be covered by their insurance.”

Of smoothies and kayaks I wanted a kayak. It was a simple request I repeated repeatedly. I talked about how we would go kayaking this summer on the lake. We’d have a blast making family memories while building our triceps and getting a tan. I communicated as clearly as I could, in English, which is the language they speak. I wanted a kayak.

They got me a blender.

There was a reason for their actions. They like smoothies. And, despite the allure of a sleek kayak cutting through the cool, clear water, it was a distant vision. In my climate zone, you can’t kayak in the winter. You have to wait until summer.

Smoothies are available all times of the year—for those with the machinery to make them. Months of waiting for warm weather or immediate gratification: the choice was obvious.

To their credit, they didn’t get me any ordinary blender. They purchased one with a motor capable of powering a rocket to the moon. This thing doesn’t blend food. It pulverizes cells; turns them inside out and supercharges the nutritional value like no blender ever dreamt of doing.

Darren Bailey as his opponent this November, and Darren Bailey is happily accepting Pritzker’s assistance,” Irvin spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said in a statement. “Darren Bailey’s candidacy is so weak he needs JB Pritzker to do his dirty work.”

That statement came in an announcement from the Irvin camp that it was launching a new attack ad against Bailey, pegging him as “Pritzker’s favorite tax-raising Republican.”

The “tax-raising” attack is aimed at Bailey’s time on the board of the North Clay School District from 1996 to 2012, when he frequently voted to raise tax levies, resulting in an 81 percent property tax increase in the district during his time on the school board.

Bailey has said he appreciates the DGA ads because they show both sides of the political establishment are underestimating him. And he’s contended that Irvin is the Democratic plant.

“Democrats shouldn’t be involved and spending money in our primary,” his campaign said in a statement. “Richard Irvin is a career Democrat and puppet of the political elites, and he is meddling in our Republican primary, trying to fool voters with nothing but lies from his basement.

“Darren Bailey is the true conservative in this race who fought Pritzker over his lockdowns and mandates while Irvin was hugging and praising him.”

The poll was released two days after Irvin was in Aurora for his first news conference since March. While he called it to publicize a state audit that showed the Illinois Department of Public Health failed to respond quickly to a deadly COVID-19 outbreak at a state-run vet-

erans home in the fall of 2020, reporters largely used the time to drill down on a number of issues Irvin has been avoiding.

He mostly dodged questions, telling reporters “let me finish” or “can I finish” more than 20 times as he restated campaign talking points and attacks rather than answering. A Chicago Tribune headline blared: “GOP candidate for governor Richard Irvin holds a news conference, but dances around questions on abortion, Trump.”

Among the questions he dodged were those that sought to clarify his votes in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries and whether he would support Trump in a 2024 election.

“That’s exactly what JB Pritzker wants to be talking about,” Irvin said.

Except Irvin’s camp has accused Bailey and Sullivan of being “never-Trumpers” and attacked Bailey for his own vote in a 2008 Democratic primary.

We’ll see if the Irvin camp views this week’s news conference as an indicator that more practice with the media is needed, or if he reverts further into a campaign insulated by the Griffin money.

Pritzker, meanwhile, was pressed on the DGA ads at a recent news conference, stating he’s not afraid of any Republican candidates, and any attacks against them should be seen elevating “all of the good that Democrats have done in the state and that I as governor have done in the state.”

“Darren Bailey has been attacking my policies since day one,” Pritzker said.

“Certainly if he becomes the Republican nominee, he’s gonna be a tough competitor. I’m simply trying to tell everybody who Darren Bailey really is.”

Pritzker throws everyone a bone during an election year and suspends the inflation adjustment to the gasoline tax until December—or until just after the election. He must think we’re all stupid. That’s doing about as much good as Biden releasing one million barrels of oil per day from the strategic petroleum reserve for six months. In other words, nothing. I’ve been looking at prices at gas stations around here and the going rate is $5 a gallon, with more than a few stations now charging $5.15. They pay $4.13 in Missouri, $4.31 in Wisconsin and $4.52 in Indiana. Let’s keep voting for Pritzker and the Democrats this fall! *** I’m a Democrat, and I’m energized to vote this fall. Yes, I’m really energized, but I won’t be voting in person.

I get most of that, but you mean I can get a ticket for “receiving” a text message or phone call, even if I don’t look at it or respond; which I never do anyway?

That seems kind of ridiculous. My phone is on in case of an emergency, and even though I have hands-free through my car radio, I let calls go to voice mail and texts go unanswered until I either reach my destination or pull over in a parking lot. *** The baby formula crisis, which

began in February, is overshadowing the gas crisis, which our state and national leaders vowed to alleviate.

But when? On May 18 I passed a gas station and it had gone from $4.89 to $5.04 in less than 45 minutes. Now the average is over $5. I paid $4.89 on May 19 at a station in Wood Dale, and wondered, how can they keep the price down when others can’t or won’t? As for the formula crisis, the most helpless among us are in dire need and thank goodness moms all over are rallying together to help each other find formula to feed these precious babies. We need to demand of our elected officials, as loudly as we can, that these issues not just be addressed but acted on immediately.

Walk the walk; don’t just talk the talk like politicians typically do. Lives and livelihoods depend on it. *** Biden likes to blame the MAGA crowd for our nation’s problems. Is the MAGA crowd responsible for the high crime in Chicago and other American cities? I don’t think so. *** So ghost guns are going to be made illegal, and the owner must get a serial number put on the weapon. Seriously? People have owned legal weapons and still committed crimes with them, so does anyone think the same people who are in possession of these ghost guns care if they are illegal, that they are going to rush right out and get serial numbers? I think not. *** A lot of people were tired of Trump, and willing to give Biden a chance. Biden’s been in office for over one year, and he’s been incompetent. Will more and more people who voted for Biden admit they made a terrible mistake? *** What happened to the millions of dollars that were given to Black Lives Matter? Several major compa-

nies showered the Black Lives Matter organization with money in the last couple of years. What good has it done? Has it provided health care, educated children, cleaned up blighted areas or fed the poor? *** Keep voting blue and we all sit in our houses starving because we can’t afford to buy gas or food. *** If the COVID-19 vaccines are so effective, and you’ve received three or four shots, why do you care what other people do? If the masks are so effective at preventing COVID-19, and you’re wearing one, or even two, why do you care what other people do? *** Here’s a reminder that a lot of the Democrats now talking about “disinformation” are the same people who pushed the Russia collusion hoax.

Warriors finish WSGC season with a flurry of wins

After losing their first three conference games, Warriors reel off nine straight victories to close WSGC campaign with a 9-3 record

The Willowbrook softball team completed its West Suburban Gold Conference season with last week’s wins over Hinsdale South and Proviso East. The Warriors, who opened their conference season with three straight losses, won their final nine conference games to finish the WSGC season with a 9-3 record.

Willowbrook opened last week’s action with a 9-2 conference home win over Hinsdale South on May 16.

Two days later, the Warriors wrapped up their WSGC season with a 15-0 victory over Proviso East.

One day after beating Proviso East, the Warriors picked up a 13-0 non-conference win at Bremen. Willowbrook finished its regular season with Saturday’s 10-0 win at Glenbard East in a contest that was shortened by rain.

The Warriors completed their regular season with an overall record of 18-7.

Willowbrook opens the IHSA Class 4A post-season with this week’s game against Hinsdale Central at the Lyons Township Regional. A win over Hinsdale Central would propel

the Warriors into this Saturday’s regional final, where they would likely face Lyons Township.

The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead in last week’s conference game against Hinsdale South. Senior Grace Hayes hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Willowbrook a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Isabella Dugo hit a solo homer later in the inning to push the Warriors’ lead to 5-1.

Senior Caitlyn Kulczyski pitched a complete game in earning a victory for the Warriors against the visiting Hornets. Kulczyski allowed three hits and one earned run over seven innings. She struck out 14 batters and didn’t issue any walks.

At the plate, Kulczyski went 3-for4 and drove in one run.

Freshman Hannah Kenny went 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs for the Warriors.

Kulczyski secured another victory in last week’s four-inning win over Proviso East. She struck out nine batters in four innings while allowing two hits and no walks.

Kulczyski went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in against the Pirates. She

also scored three runs. Hayes went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs.

Sophomore Karman Rowe pitched a complete game for Willowbrook in her team’s 13-0, five-inning win at Bremen on May 19. Rowe gave up one hit and one walk. She recorded four strikeouts.

Sophomore Lindsey Rugg went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the Warriors’ win over Bremen. Junior Kayleigh Dennison went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored three runs.

Rowe went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Hayes and Dugo supplied two hits each.

Freshman Sonia Ruchala went 2-for-2 and scored three runs in Saturday’s victory over Glenbard East.

Ruchala also drove in one run for the Warriors, who scored seven runs in the second inning.

Hayes went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. Rugg went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Kulczyski handled the Warriors’ pitching duties in Saturday’s win over Glenbard East. She allowed one hit and didn’t give up any walks. She recorded five strikeouts.
