Police respond to sighting of stolen vehicle

Three suspects arrested

On April 28 at 9:58 p.m. Villa Park and Lombard police officers responded to the area of Roosevelt Road for the sighting of a stolen vehicle.

Lombard police initially located the vehicle, a black Range-Rover, which fled eastbound on Roosevelt Road into Villa Park.

Villa Park police officers successfully deployed stop sticks on the vehicle at Roosevelt and Ardmore. Officers pursued as the suspects continued eastbound Roosevelt Road with deflated tires.

The vehicle became disabled and drove into a ditch near York Road in Oak Brook where three suspects allegedly fled on foot into a wooded area.

Several surrounding police agencies and a Chicago police helicopter responded to the area to assist in locating

the suspects. All three suspects were shortly after captured and taken into custody without incident.

According to police, at the scene, officers recovered three handguns with five loaded extended ammunition magazines and one loaded 50 round ammunition drum. Officers also reportedly recovered a felony amount of cannabis.

The Villa Park Police Department recently announced the results of its distracted driving enforcement campaign in April.

April was Distracted Driving Month. The Villa Park Police Department joined the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police and more than 200 law enforcement agencies throughout the state to take part in the month-long enforcement campaign, which reminded motorists to “Drop it and Drive.”

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed the Villa Park Police Department to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior,” said Villa Park Police Sgt. James Cihak.

The police department’s announcement of the April enforcement campaign’s results urged motorists to avoid distracted driving.

“Using your phone in anything other than hands-free mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, but also illegal,” noted the department’s recent update. “Break the cycle. Drop it and drive.”

The state’s distracted driving campaign was funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.

Upcoming seat belt enforcement campaign from May 13-31 will feature additional patrols to make sure drivers and passengers buckle up

The Villa Park Police Department announced last week that it will be stepping up enforcement for the Memorial Day “Click it or Ticket” campaign, which will take place May 1331. The “Click it or Ticket” campaign focuses on safety education and law enforcement support to save lives.

“Seat belts have proven to be one of the best ways to save your life in a crash,” said Villa Park Police Sgt. James Cihak. “Unfortunately, many still don’t buckle up. Worse yet, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that can be passed on to younger generations who follow the example set by their elders.”

The police department’s recent announcement noted that Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer—a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends.

The “Click it or Ticket” campaign

will feature additional patrols to enforce seat belt usage. The campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with federal highway safety funds.

“Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle up every time,” stated the police department’s announcement about the upcoming “Click it or Ticket” enforcement period. “Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent. Seat belts save lives every day, but they’re only effective if they’re used.”

The Villa Park Police Department stated that while Illinois currently has a 93.5 percent seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants still account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes. The simple click of a seat belt could save thousands of lives each year.

Lt. Chris Gilliland retired from the Villa Park Fire Department last week. Gilliland joined the department as a full-time firefighter/paramedic in March 1996. His colleagues wished him well during a ceremony at Villa Park Fire Station 81 on his final day on the job—Wednesday, May 4. A Villa Park resident, Gilliland attended Albright Middle School.

He graduated from Willowbrook High School in 1989. Gilliland began working as a firefighter/paramedic in Oakbrook Terrace in 1993. He also worked part-time at the Villa Park department before he was hired full-time in 1996. Gilliland continued working part-time in Oakbrook Terrace for several years after he joined the Villa Park Fire Department on a full-time basis. Gilliland was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in Villa Park in 2010. “It did go by fast—in the blink of an eye,” said Gilliland of his career with the Villa Park Fire Department. ‘You never know what you’re going to get when you come to work. That’s what I liked about it, actually.” Gilliland and his wife Stephanie have two daughters— Haley and Taylor—and a son—Adam.

By Jim Nowlan As a teen in the 1950s, I worked after school and weekends at my dad’s small-town weekly newspaper.

I am reminded of those days of “hot metal type” in the back shop, as I observe the fast-fading institution of the community newspaper. There were 16,000 or so weeklies across our nation back then, in burgs tiny and larger; fewer than half remain.

In my lifetime, printing technology has moved, you might say, from the Industrial Revolution to the Space Age. On the community news side, we have morphed from the straightforward reportage of the city council meeting, and weddings of your neighbors’ kids, to the oft-uncontrolled acidity of Facebook, which often “lights up” with uninformed, kneejerk commentary.

My job was to help put out the paper, not write it, so forgive me as I step through the door from the front office to the back shop. My nostrils fill with the pungent, metallic brew of printer’s ink, gasoline (to clean ink off old forms), paper dust, acrid effusions from the Linotype machine, and tobacco smoke.

I gladly take another deep draught.

After all, the intoxicating scent of the newspaper shop tells me important work is going on here: The town’s weekly is produced here, with nearly every household a subscriber, even if a farm wife had to barter eggs with Dad. I don my grey apron, slip a cupable, steel make-up rule in the front pocket

Ode to a ‘line-o-type’

(to scrape lead tailings off the galleys of fresh type), and put a foot-long, metal line gauge in my back pocket (with its printer’s measure of “ens” and “ems,” six of the latter to an inch). I am ready for work, joining the other two high school “printer’s devils.”

The small back shop (maybe 20x60’) is crammed with dangerous, pre-OSHA machinery—hand-fed “job” presses; saw and router for shaping ads from cast-lead “guts” for national advertisers like General Motors and Ford; California job cases that held the movable type (you’ve seen the case drawers in antique stores); stone-top tables for making up pages; belt-driven paper cutter, and more.

And, of course, the “big” newspaper press. Ours was a 19th Century flatbed, cylinder press. I stood on a three-step riser to feed sheets the size of four pages of this newspaper (on one side) onto a rotating cylinder, which would meet the moving flat bed of newspaper pages rumbling back and forth beneath me. I used a bit a glycerin to keep the third finger of my right hand sticky, so I could lift a corner of the big sheet, flick it, creating a small rush of air, just enough to loosen the sheet from the stack, which I then slid down to the guides to meet the cylinder.

The aristocrat of the machinery was the Linotype machine. Patented by Otto Mergenthaler in 1884, the roughly 6-foot x 6-foot iron-and-steel behemoth may have been the greatest advance in printing technology since

The machine replaced hand-setting of type via a spectacular orchestration of hundreds of moving parts. As a backup Linotype operator, I felt much like a church organist, the grand machine above and surrounding me.

The large keyboard was different from the typewriter, and efficient.

Lower-case keys on the left, the vowels all close to the third and fourth fingers of the left hand; upper-case letters on the right. The operator lightly tapped a key, which released a vertical, slender piece of brass, called a matrice, or mat, with a letter indented into one side. The mats came tumbling down on a slender belt, from their temporary storage above, into an expandable metal box, where the mats formed a line of type.

This line of type was transported to a place in front of a pot of liquid lead, where type and pot came together briefly, lead injected into a bar, against the indented, now raised, letters, or type. The bars were ejected, still hot, onto a tray with other lines of type.

Ingenious, until the 1960s, when even more efficient “cold type” and offset printing came along.

Out in the front office, Dad and his one reporter would cover the school board and city council meetings. The news office was located on the town’s main street and had big plate glass windows. So, whenever news broke, Dad would take a large sheet of newsprint (paper) and use a grease pen to write out the news that “Harold Settles died

this morning at 7 a.m.” and of course the local election results, hot from the county clerk’s office down the street.

Cars drove by our office at a snail’s pace, to read the latest from Dad’s sheets, hung on a wire with clothespins in the front window.

Each week, Eileen Benedict would make endless phone calls to a list of townspeople. “You have any news this week?” This became the page, or more, of “Personals,” e.g.: “George and Effie Bort motored to Peoria Sunday after church to enjoy chicken dinner with his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bort.

The Donald Borts reported their son Raymond had just completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood and was expecting orders to Korea.” This was the Facebook of its day. Newsy, civil.

Thanks for letting me reminisce.

Dad’s paper was important to our town, the glue that bound us. The paper wasn’t perfect. Dad protected the main street businessmen and their peccadilloes from print—he couldn’t afford to lose their advertising. But overall, the paper was invaluable.

Small town folks today are wrestling with how to replace community newspapers. Paper will likely be gone, as Facebook and digital platforms spew endless “information.” But who will cover the city council? Who will opine with some authority about the best candidates for the school board?

Who will provide the glue, and not the acid?

Kulczyski highlights Warriors’ superb week by firing a perfect game Senior strikes out 17 in a 1-0 win over York

The Willowbrook softball team earned four straight victories last week. After opening the week with a decisive West Suburban Gold Conference win over Proviso East, the Warriors delivered three consecutive thrilling victories.

In one of those wins, the Warriors beat Downers Grove South 7-5 in a West Suburban Gold Conference game in Villa Park on May 4.

The Warriors completed their week with Saturday’s home doubleheader against York. Willowbrook senior Caitlyn Kulczyski pitched a perfect game in the opening contest of the non-conference doubleheader, leading the Warriors to a 1-0 victory.

Willowbrook completed the doubleheader sweep of the Dukes by rallying to post a 9-8 win in the second game.

Senior Grace Hayes ended Satur-

day’s second game by hitting a tworun double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Warriors improved their overall season record to 10-7 with Saturday’s two victories. Willowbrook moved its conference record to 4-3 with its win over Downers Grove South on May 4.

The Mustangs scored a pair of first-inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead in last week’s conference game in Villa Park. Hayes bashed a threerun home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead.

Willowbrook trailed Downers Grove South 5-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Zaida Serrano and Kulczyski both singled during the sixth inning to help the Warriors score three runs to take a 7-5 advantage.

Kulczyski allowed seven hits and three earned runs in last week’s game against Downers Grove South. She recorded 10 strikeouts and issued

two walks.

Kulczyski was flawless in Saturday’s first game against York. She retired 21 straight batters in a seven-inning masterpiece. Kulczyski piled up 17 strikeouts in her perfect-game performance, which included a total of 84 pitches.

The Warriors scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Isabella Dugo reached base with a one-out single.

Junior Natalie Gercone, who ran for Dugo, eventually scored on a passed ball.

Willowbrook began last week’s action with a 15-0, four-inning conference win at Proviso East on May 2. Kulczyski went 3-for-3 with a home run. Junior Kayleigh Dennison tripled and drove in three runs.

Freshman Sonia Ruchala went 2-for3 and scored a pair of runs. Ruchala also drove in one run.

The Warriors’ schedule this week includes conference games against Leyden, Addison Trail and Morton.

The Willowbrook girls soccer team ran its winning streak to six consecutive matches with last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference victories over Hinsdale South and Proviso East.

The Warriors’ six-match winning streak ended with Saturday’s 3-0 non-conference loss at York.

Saturday’s loss in Elmhurst moved the Warriors’ overall season record to 12-5.

Willowbrook began last week’s action with a 5-1 conference win at Hinsdale South on May 3. Senior Erin Fitzgibbon scored a pair of goals for the Warriors. Junior Kennedy Vannoy also scored two goals in the win over the Hornets. Senior Mackenzie Parente contributed one goal.

Parente, Vannoy and Fitzgibbon had one assist each in the win over Hinsdale South. Senior Brooke Vandergrift and junior Haley Preuss also provided one assist each.

The Warriors coasted to a 10-0 conference victory over Proviso East on May 5. Fitzgibbon netted two goals in the win over the Pirates. Junior Alyssa Basford also scored two goals.

Parente, Preuss and freshman Emily Barth each scored one goal against Proviso East. Senior Rachael Klamecki, freshman Liz Tretina and freshman Halie Ahrens also contributed one goal each.

The Warriors, who improved their conference record to 3-2 with their win over Proviso East, will finish their regular season with this week’s conference match at Leyden. Willowbrook will open the IHSA Class 3A post-season with a May 18 match against Reavis at the Lyons Township Regional.

The Warriors earned their statemeet berths at last week’s Metea Valley Sectional in Aurora. The top four singles players and the top four doubles teams at each of the state’s 16 sectionals qualified for the state meet.

I don’t know if this column will ever be published. Or better put, if I’ll have the nerve to publish it.

It’s about divorce and I have no experience in that arena. I never divorced. In fact, I had a beautiful and wonderful marriage. My parents never divorced. No one in my immediate family has (so far) divorced.

So basically, I have no experience speaking on this subject.

Still I had a bit of a eureka about it today. And when I have a eureka, I often feel compelled to share.

So share I will.

I am a widow. Sometimes people I know have compared a divorce to being a widow and I’ve sort of taken offense to that.

Losing someone to death is nothing like losing someone to divorce. That is the truth.

But it’s only part of the truth.

I was seeing this truth from my own perspective. My truth was more horrible than a divorce truth because how could something be anywhere equal to the death of your number one person?

Since my husband passed 17-plus months ago, I’ve often said that grief is not a contest. No one wants the grief trophy for having the biggest, hardest loss.

But I was only seeing loss as physical death. Divorce is also loss in the truest sense.

I came to this revelation this morning while making coffee. My husband always used to make the coffee and bring me a cup, so coffee

holds a warm place in my heart.

Making coffee made me think of him and fun memories came flooding back. I remembered funny things he used to do and say and I found myself being so grateful for those memories.

I often share such memories with friends and especially my kids. We exchange them like trading cards. We like remembering together. It is a gift we share through our grief.

And then it dawned on me: my husband died, but all the good memories we made and all the fun things we did are still there for us to review and revisit. That is a gift.

The people I know who experienced a divorce (for the most part) don’t have that gift.

They don’t reminisce about the good times. They don’t giggle about the silly things or cry happy tears about the touching things.

Somehow in the process of a divorce, your favorite person segues into one of your least favorite persons.

I’m sure it’s a gradual process.

Still, every divorced couple (or nearly so) started out hopeful. They made memories. They laughed together. They were intimate. They had hopes and plans for the future.

They were in love.

And then, I’m guessing, gradually things change. Paths for the future no longer advance in the same direction. Tempers may flare. The love dwindles. And somehow the person in the center of your life is no longer in your life at all—or at least as little as you can make them be.

And you both decide the “D” word is the way to go.

And in your life, the “D” doesn’t pertain to death, but the end of a marriage, and that might very well feel like failure. The memories you spent years making are still there, but they aren’t the same. The photos you took of happy family moments now have the “other” person in them and that is no longer you. It must be hard.

I’m not sure why these thoughts came to me this morning, but they seemed profound. We all deal with loss and grief. I truly thought the loss of my husband was worse than any divorce could ever be.

I’m sorry for that.

I can’t judge your loss, just like you can’t fathom mine. Loss is loss.

Devastation is just that.

We are all struggling, yet we are all succeeding, hopefully more of the latter.

And we do best when we build each other up through whatever we are going through. I’m going to try to do more of that in the future.

This quote from Pritzker jumped out at me: “We will fight like hell, not just for the women of Illinois, but for every person in our state and every person across this nation who believes not in limiting civil rights and human rights, but in expanding them.” Nothing said about civil rights and human rights for the unborn, but I digress.

Bravo, governor. I’m so proud to live in a state that averages 46,000 abortions a year and is the abortion mecca of the Midwest. At least Illinois will be one of the top states for something other than for people moving out.

No other Midwestern or neighboring state saw a population decline of more than 17,000. In March 2022, Florida added 4,500 manufacturing jobs over the month, representing the largest single month of growth for Florida manufacturers since May 2020. Florida grew by 211,196 residents from July 1, 2020, to July 1, 2021, to a population of 21,781,128.

And yet, with all this evidence, we still vote in the same people and the same party year after year, the same people who are destroying our state.

Until we are willing to vote out the people who are currently in power, and replace them with people who have our best interests in mind, we will continue to see this state implode. I hope it’s not too late. *** I’m sick and tired of watching

The Willowbrook boys volleyball team defeated Addison Trail 25-18, 25-21 in last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference match in Villa Park. Playing their Senior Night match in the contest on May 3, the Warriors avenged a loss to Addison Trail three days earlier at the Lincoln-Way East Invitational. “I’m glad we played well on Senior Night,” said Willowbrook coach Ryan Bazon after the win over the Blazers. “I think our guys were fired up. They played loose, they played with power and they played as a team.” Senior Michael Mosbah (above left - No. 17) provided nine kills for the Warriors in their victory over their District 88 rival. Junior Brandon Edwards (No. 35 - top right) added five kills. Junior Patrick Dasbach also contributed five kills. Senior Dom Faillo (No. 23 - above right) handed out 27 assists for the Warriors, who improved to 8-16 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Warriors will host an invitational this Friday and Saturday.
