Closed until further notice; COVID-19 shuts down dine-in service

Villa Park restaurant owner looks forward to welcoming back customers and employees

There’s usually a crowd at Simon’s Restaurant, located at 2 W. Roosevelt Road in Villa Park. But these are unusual times, and the business, like so many others, is closed until further notice because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have grown with our community,” said Simon Kringas, the owner and manager of Simon’s, last week.

“We know a lot of our guests on a firstname basis. It’s beyond just business.

It’s like an extension of our family.”

Located at the northwest corner of the routinely busy intersection of Roosevelt Road and Ardmore Avenue, Simon’s attracts customers for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The business is normally open 18 hours a day, from 6 a.m. until midnight.

“We had a booming economy last year and this year,” said Kringas in describing how his business was doing before the pandemic. “We were doing great.”

Kringas noted a regulation for restaurants that any potentially hazardous food prepared on-site must be discarded after seven days.

“That was never an issue,” said Kringas in describing the normally heavy business at his restaurant. “We had fresh food every day.”

Simon’s opened nearly 19 years ago. The restaurant opened on Aug. 8, 2001, about one month before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

On March 15, Gov. JB Pritzker ordered all restaurants across Illinois to close to dine-in service, starting at the end of business the following day, March 16, until March 30. Last week, the governor extended that closure through April 30. Restaurants can continue to provide carry-out and delivery service.

Simon’s remained open for dine-in

service through March 16. In the preceding few days, Kringas noticed a significant decrease in customers.

“Our regular sit-down business was down about 30 percent on Friday [March 13], and about 40 percent on Saturday [March 14],” Kringas said.

He noted that his restaurant attracts

several groups of retirees who get together once a week for breakfast.

“All of those people are staying at home,” he said in referring to one of the changes in recent weeks.

Kringas ordered hundreds of pounds of corned beef for St. Patrick’s Day—March 17. His customers con-

sumed plenty of corned beef and other dishes on Sunday, March 15, and Monday, March 16. Simon’s remained open to provide carry-out service after the ordered closure for dine-in service.

“We stayed open for carry-out for a few days,” said Kringas. “But it just didn’t work. We had a little carry-out

business on Tuesday [March 17], but the numbers were too weak to support staying open.”

County health department provides dashboard with information about confirmed COVID-19 cases Information updated daily; 647 confirmed cases in DuPage County as of Monday morning

The DuPage County Health Department announced a new interactive COVID-19 case map last week.

The case map, also referred to as a dashboard, links data from the DuPage County Health Department into the GIS Data Systems from DuPage County to provide a greater level of understanding into how the COVID-19 pandemic is unfolding across the county.

The information on the COVID-19

dashboard will be updated daily. Information regarding age range, gender and the community or residence of each identified case will be included.

“Since testing resources are limited to the most severe cases and at-risk populations, this does not reflect total disease presence in our communities,” stated a March 30 release from the DuPage County Health Department.

“As testing becomes more available, this information will become more reflective of the actual disease activity in the community.”

As of Monday morning, the dashboard indicated 647 total confirmed

cases in DuPage County, including 22 deaths. Fourteen (14) of the 22 deaths have occurred at long-term care facilities.

The first case of COVID-19 in the county was confirmed on March 13.

“Due to the nature of COVID-19 community spread and testing, the number of positive cases is likely much higher than that listed as a result of unreported or untested cases in our community,” related a statement on the health department’s dashboard.

According to the dashboard, a breakdown of the 647 cases by municipality as of Monday morning indicated 41 cases among Addison residents, 41 among Lombard resi-

The dashboard showed 111 cases in the county among residents ages 40-49, and 88 cases in the 30-39 age range.

There were 73 cases among residents ages 20-29, seven cases in the 10-19 age range, and one case in the children’s age group up to 9 years old.

Statewide, there are 11,256 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday morning, with 274 deaths.

School districts engage in remote learning through April

Area school districts, including District 88 and District 45, began the third week of providing online education to their students earlier this week, as the community continues to adjust to life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The districts last provided in-school instruction on March 13, following Gov. JB Pritzker’s order to close all K-12 schools in Illinois from March 17-30. Last week, Pritzker updated his stay-at-home order, which originally went into effect on March 21. The stayat-home and school closure orders are now in effect through April 30.

23—the districts provided education through their E-learning programs, with teachers providing online lessons and assignments.

Both districts had their spring break last week—the week of March 30 to April 3.

Last week, Pritzker updated his stay-at-home order to extend the closure of all K-12 schools in Illinois Raul Gaston, the principal of District 45’s Jefferson Middle School, recently sent a newsletter to the school’s parents with details about the district’s transition this week from E-learning to Remote Learning.

“The term E-learning was a structure of lessons that were intended for a short-term closure, such as a snow day,” said Gaston. “The E-Learning plans allowed districts to have a day of instruction for students and not have to make up the day later in the year. With our current conditions of an extended multi-month closure, E-Learning is not

an adequate approach to teaching and learning.”

Gaston noted that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has recommended that all schools in the state move to Remote Learning during April.

Beginning on April 7, Jefferson students received lessons and activities from each class through their Google Classroom accounts.

According to Gaston’s letter to parents, the ISBE recommended that schools adhere to a pass/incomplete model of grading during Remote Learning to diminish the impact of the current conditions.

“We are following this recommendation and falling in line with Willowbrook High School, as they are also following this recommendation from the ISBE,” said Gaston. “This means that students will receive a pass or incomplete on their work instead of a grade for assignments and the course.”

Jefferson Middle School is one of the feeder schools for District 88’s Willowbrook High School.

Students at Jefferson who receive an incomplete grade for a course will have to make up that work at a later date.

“My goal is to have zero incomplete final grades at Jefferson,” said Gaston.

“It’s too early to know how students would need to make up an incomplete grade, but I’m sure we can all agree that it would be best to get the work done now instead of having to make things up later. This is especially true for our eighth-graders, as this will be incorporated into their points and ability to transition smoothly to the high school.”

Gaston closed his letter by telling parents that he will join the District 45 office and teachers in continuing to provide communication and guidance.

Food pantry working to keep up with increasing need

Individuals and families who are food insecure are likely in need even more so now, as people shelter in place or experience job layoffs due to business closures.

As a result, the Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry at First United Methodist Church in Lombard is working hard to meet the increasing needs of the Villa Park, Lombard and Oakbrook Terrace communities.

Larry Hebert, director of operations, said the pantry remains open for clients to receive food—but for now they have to drive through, and volunteers will load pre-packaged boxes of food into their cars.

For those without transportation, he added, there is “a special setup for those who don’t have a car.”

The director emphasized that with social distancing and no contact now the norm, “Even before this drive-up

thing started, we were ahead of the curve,” disinfecting shelves, products, doorknobs, floors and even pens.

Hebert said he has around 24 volunteers—one who is 90 years old—who are willing to give of their time to make sure the pantry is organized and take food boxes to the clients’ cars.

He said it takes 10 to 12 volunteers each day “to run the place,” adding, “You can’t pay people to do what these people are doing.”

Hebert said that more clients are coming to the pantry lately. In January an average of 80 families came by a week, and he estimates that number is now up to about 120 families.

He added that on Wednesday, March 25, an estimated 30 families alone, 11

of whom were new, came to the pantry.

“We want people to know if they need food, they can come to the pantry,” said volunteer and pantry board Chair Hester Bury.

When asked if the food pantry can keep up with the demand, both Bury and Hebert were optimistic.

Bury, who works for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, related that “We were able to get a good delivery from the food bank on Monday [March 23],” adding that they get a delivery every two weeks.

Hebert said while the pantry does not stock paper products, hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes, he has gotten donations from Mariano’s, including produce such as fruits and vegetables,

and recently, some milk.

The director said the pantry also gets milk and eggs every Friday through an area dairy, and a Villa Park pet grooming business owner goes to the Downers Grove Pepperidge Farm—at midnight when the truck comes back with unused products—to bring bread items to the pantry.

He narrated that the pantry has four refrigerators and four freezers with which to stock some perishable items.

A December food drive hosted by Glenbard East High School and a May drive with the U.S Postal Service also help stock the pantry’s shelves each year, Hebert credited.

I was at the Sam’s Club in Addison on Saturday (March 28) grocery shopping, and yes, some people are wearing gloves and masks, yet some don’t practice the 6 feet of social distance people are still crowding around certain areas of the stores, especially when you try to pay. I don’t understand what part of 6 feet of distance people don’t get? Some people are wearing gloves to prevent getting the virus, but these dumb, covidiots are taking them off in the parking lot and throwing them on the ground. We need to get the word out that this behavior is not going to help stop the spread.

Someone has to pick them up and no one will want to. This is absolutely stupid and not a way to flatten the curve. Wearing gloves does not stop the spread as they are touching all the things they are buying. Wearing gloves gives a false illusion that they are safer when in fact they are actually putting themselves more at risk and spreading the virus or germs more. Leave the gloves for the doctors and nurses, the ones that need to use them and change them after every patient. *** It’s perfectly normal to feel grief for the Americans who have died from the coronavirus. It’s also understandable to empathize with all of the people

who have been hospitalized, and to the millions who have lost their jobs.

But let’s not forget another victim of COVID-19—the Village of Villa Park.

With so many people staying at home, the Garden Village is probably suffering reduced revenues from its red-light cameras. *** So, I’m driving down Villa today and stop behind a Villa Park squad car at the trail. (Squad SUV, really.) It’s stopped because several people were in the crosswalk. That’s the rule, traffic stops for people that are crossing the street. Fair enough. But people kept coming into the street. Now, that’s a problem! Why? Because there are stop signs on the trail indicating that people are to yield to street traffic and not cross the street until the traffic has gone and it’s safe. People, we don’t have the right of way 24 hours a day when there is a sign like that. We are protected, theoretically, if we were in the crosswalk before the traffic comes, but the state law specifically says that pedestrians coming up to the crossing are obligated to let traffic go first when there is signage indicating so. *** Celebrities, sports figures, etc. are donating millions to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Elmhurst man charged with child pornography According to area law enforcement officials, an Elmhurst man has been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault, as well as for video-recording the attack and disseminating it, according to DuPage County court records.

Ernest A. Pearson, 34, of the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue in Elmhurst, was charged Friday, March 27.

As of Monday evening, March 30, he remained in the DuPage County jail on $500,000 bond and was still being held on Tuesday afternoon, March 30, according to jail records.

Pearson was then to be transferred to the custody of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.

Reports said Pearson is accused to videotaping a child sleeping on Jan.

5 and for distributing the video. He has been charged with assaulting a child younger than 13 and for three counts of child pornography. According to Grundy County records, Pearson pleaded guilty in 2013 to the burglary of a gas station in Morris the year prior.

If Pearson posts bond, he will be required to wear a GPS tracker and stay at least 1,000 feet away from the victim and her residence. He also would have to stay off the Internet and have no contact with persons younger than 18.

His next court date was scheduled April 3.

If convicted of the assault charge, Pearson faces six to 30 years in prison.

Village issues reminder to residents — don’t flush disposable wipes The Village of Villa Park urges residents to refrain from flushing disposable wipes down the toilet.

“Disinfecting wipes are helping people combat the spreading of germs

amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated a recent online post from the village. “However, people are flushing wipes down the toilet and creating sewer back-ups. Do not flush wipes!”

School districts provide free meals to students while school buildings are closed

Five days worth of food to be provided each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at multiple schools

District 88 is partnering with District 45, Salt Creek School District 48, Addison School District 4, Arbor Management, Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to provide meals to students while school buildings are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The food service program provides meals free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18.

Beginning on Tuesday, April 7, five days worth of food (five breakfasts and five lunches) were distributed. Five days worth of food will be provided each Tuesday while school buildings are closed to on-site learning.

The next distribution of five days worth of food will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, April 14.

The area distribution sites include four Villa Park schools and two Lombard schools. The Villa Park schools are: • Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave. • Albright Middle School, 1110 S. Villa Ave. • Ardmore Elementary School, 225 S. Harvard Ave., • Jefferson Middle School, 255 W. Liver disease, do you assume they abused alcohol? And on and on.

No, the focus and energy goes into curing the disease, and that should be the focus now. Put politics aside and do what is necessary to get the job done.

And with this so-called commission being put together for after the pandemic dies down, you can bet Trump will be the subject of yet another witch hunt. Trump closed borders to travel in January, and yet he is labeled a racist.

Would it hurt you left-wing liberals to find one thing the president has done right since this crisis unfolded? *** If there are any positives from this coronavirus, at least AOC and the squad of leftists with their climate change hysteria aren’t dominating the news. The number of people filing for unemployment in two weeks was almost 10 million. I fear we’re well on our way to reaching that 30 percent, but that’s OK. At least all the politicians will still get paid.

“Our normal daily take-out business is pretty good, but that was when people were busy,” Kringas added.

“A lot of people who are working and have kids in school don’t have time to cook. When life is busy, people are eating out. When everything slowed down—when people were furloughed and schools closed—the traffic wasn’t around like it used to be. All businesses thrive on each other. It’s a chain. We are all connected.”

Simon’s has a total of about 40 employees—some full-time and some part-time—said Kringas. Those employees received their final paychecks, until further notice, on March 27.

“Obviously, this is no fault of ours,” Kringas said. “We are a family within a family at work. We’re all pulling together to help each other.”

Kringas has reached out to his banker about filing for state and federal loans that will provide funds to pay the restaurant’s employees. In the mean-

time, he instructed Simon’s employees to file for unemployment benefits.

“We don’t know how long this is going to be,” said Kringas of the shutdown. “We are hoping to be back by Memorial Day, but nobody knows exactly what to expect.”

After closing to both dine-in and carry-out service, Kringas ordered a detailed deep-cleaning of the restaurant.

“We aren’t going to be shut down forever,” Kringas said. “There are a lot of businesses in our industry that can’t say that. Hopefully a lot of them will pull through.”

Whenever Simon’s does reopen, Kringas said the restaurant might have curtailed hours—possibly opening one hour later and closing one hour earlier than normal.

“When we get back, there will be a learning curve for every business,” said Kringas. “Whenever that happens, maybe there will be a little more compassion for humanity.”

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Michael Uplegger announced on Thursday, April 2 that bond has been set for a West Chicago man accused of hijacking a 62-yearold man’s car at knifepoint. Moises Patino-Romero, 25, of West Chicago, appeared in Bond Court, where Judge Alex McGimpsey set bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply. Patino-Romero has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class X Felony.

At approximately 12:08 p.m., on March 31, 2020, the victim went to a local store and left his vehicle unlocked in the parking lot while he went inside. The victim returned to his vehicle and drove away while speaking to someone on the phone.

“The allegations against Mr. Patino-Romero are outrageous,” Berlin said. “This type of violent behavior, particularly in consideration of the current stay-at-home order, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law. What I find particularly troubling is the fact that Mr. Patino-Romero was just released from custody less than half an hour before he allegedly committed this crime. Thankfully, the victim in this case was not physically harmed.”

Patino-Romero’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 27, 2020 for arraignment in front of Judge George Bakalis.

Citizen outraged at people dropping used gloves on the ground I am outraged at the stupidity of people with the way they are reacting to this pandemic. I was at the Sam’s Club in Addison on Saturday grocery shopping and yes, some people are wearing gloves and masks, yet some don’t practice the 6 ft. of social distance. People are still crowding around certain areas of the stores, especially when you try to pay.

I don’t understand what part of “6 feet of distance” people don’t get?

I started saying if Michael Jordan doesn’t fit laying down between you and me, then you are standing too close to me -- move back!!!

Some people are wearing gloves to prevent getting the virus, but these dumb, “covidiots” are taking them off in the parking lot and throwing them onto the ground! We need to

get the word out that this behavior is not going to help stop the spread.

Someone has to pick those gloves up and no one will want to. This is absolutely stupid and not a way to flatten the curve.

Wearing gloves does not stop the spread as they are touching all the things you are buying. Wearing gloves gives a false illusion that you are safer when in fact you are actually putting yourselves more at risk and spreading the virus or germs more. Leave the gloves for the doctors and nurses, the ones that need to use them and change them after every patient. That’s who really needs the gloves, not the average Joe that can use hand sanitizer and wash his/ her hands.

DuPage Foundation sets up COVID-19 Response Fund The DuPage Foundation has created the COVID-19 Response Fund to receive contributions from those looking to support our community in this time of crisis and help fuel our local not-for-profits who will be impacted by and charged with responding to the repercussions of this emergency.

The Foundation recently announced it had received a $150,000 donation from the Birck family, with footprints in Hinsdale and Naperville, to the Foundation’s new COVID-19 Response Fund, bringing the funds current total to more than $300,000..

He advised parents that it is their children’s responsibility to complete online attendance check-in, finish their assignments and achieve passing grade in their classes.

“Your role is to encourage and support your student through this process,” stated Gaston. “Getting your student to get some sleep, wake up in the morning and engage in Remote Learning is your only responsibility. It’s important for your student to be as independent as possible.”

Willowbrook teachers, staff available to students during weekdays in April District 88 Superintendent Scott Helton issued his own message to the community in the district’s April 3 newsletter.

“The 2019-20 school year has been an unprecedented experience for all of us, as the impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continue to bring about challenges none of us thought we would face,” said Helton.

District 88 will receive full funding from the state during April, said Helton, who added that the school days from this month will not have to be made up at the end of the school year.

Helton said that the District 88 Remote Learning Plan is aligned to the ISBE’s recommendations, as well as the district’s mission and vision.

According to information provided by District 88, Remote Learning through the district’s E-learning format in place each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of April. Each Monday, along with Friday, April 17, and Friday, April 24, is devoted to academic

support, communication and connection. This Friday, April 10—Good Friday—is not a school day.

Teachers, counselors, deans, school psychologists and other school officials are available to students from 7:45 a.m. through 3 p.m. each weekday of April, excluding April 10. Students are required to check in to each Google Classroom in which they are enrolled by 3 p.m. daily (Monday through Friday) for attendance purposes.

In discussing grading during the current period of online instruction, Helton said that students’ current grades are maintained and can be improved during Remote Learning, providing the students demonstrate continued engagement and ability. If students fail to demonstrate or maintain the teacher’s expected levels of learning an engagement, the students may earn an incomplete grade for the course for the semester.

Failing grades won’t be issued, and final exams won’t be administered during the Remote Learning period, added Helton.

“Along with altering the academic setting, COVID-19 also has affected our ability to host events,” Helton stated in his April 3 message. “We certainly understand the frustration and devastation of our families and students— especially our seniors—as events and activities have been impacted.”

Helton said that April events have been postponed. They will be rescheduled if possible.

Willowbrook High School’s Class of 2020 is supposed to hold its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 17.

The director praised Jack Weaver, whose Eagle Scout project last year helped the pantry add storage space, saying, “We have been able to greatly increase our inventory when sales and/or free goods become available.

We previously could not store these goods no matter the cost as there was not enough space…Never did we know how important this additional space would be.”

He said, for instance, he was able to get a whole pallet of miscellaneous cereal, thanks to the remodeling project.

“I couldn’t order that stuff before,” the director added.

“We are so blessed with this Eagle Scout project!” Hebert said. “Because of him we are still in business.”

For now, clients can get a box of food that includes non-perishables, dairy and “whatever fresh produce we have,” Bury outlined, with Hebert saying that clients can come to the pantry three times a month.

Donations of non-perishable items are welcome, Bury said: “We just don’t know how much the demand is going to grow. The longer people are not working, the greater the demand will be.”

“We will definitely take donations from the community,” she added.

Donations can be driven up to the building, Hebert said, and “We’ll unload it for you.”

“I am overwhelmed [by the donations]. People are thinking of other

people,” he added.

Bury said she is hearing from clients about job losses and layoffs, which makes the pantry more important than ever, and the director noted, “They’re just so grateful to get whatever they can.”

He said that when clients come in, the first they say is “Thank you for being open,” since some food pantries are not currently open.

Bury and Hebert said they will take monetary donations as well—as every $1 can purchase $8 worth of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The director said when he got a $60 donation, the donor was surprised to hear that his contribution would buy as much as $480 worth of food.

“We’re going to continue to do this as long as we can,” Hebert said, and Bury summed up, “We’re here for people. We’re here to help.”

The Lombard/Villa Park Food Pantry is located at 155 S. Main St., Lombard, and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9-11:45 a.m., Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. and every third Saturday from 9-11:45 a.m., at which time donations can be dropped off.

IHSA delivers update on potential for high school spring sports Athletics could resume if schools open in early May; Post-season competitions could extend into late June

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) issued an update last week that offered some hope for salvaging 2020 high school spring sports seasons in the state.

On March 13, Gov. JB Pritzker ordered all K-12 schools in Illinois to close from March 17-30, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That closure was subsequently extended through April 7. Last week, Pritzker announced it would be extended through April 30.

“Even though Illinois schools will remain closed through April 30, following the March 31 announcement

by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, we remain optimistic that a May 1 return to school, followed by a to-be-determined acclimatization practice period, can still result in a truncated spring season that culminates with IHSA State Series tournaments and the crowning of state champions in June,” noted the April 1 statement from the IHSA, which oversees high school athletics in the state.

Schools has stated that no IHSA member school should organize any spring sports practices or games while the state’s high schools are closed to onsite instruction.

High school spring sports teams had begun practicing before the COVID-19 shutdown in mid-March. Most spring sports teams have yet to play a competitive event during the 2020 season.

Several high school spring sports are scheduled to hold their state series post-season competitions in May. The IHSA state tournaments in badminton and boys gymnastics, for example, are both scheduled to take place May 1516.

Other sports, like boys volleyball, softball and baseball are scheduled to extend into June. The IHSA Class 3A and 4A state championship games in softball and baseball are both scheduled for June 13. Post-season play in those two sports is supposed to begin in late May. In late March, the IHSA stated it is

There is some good news for bicycle commuters during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pritzker administration has deemed bicycle service and repair as an essential service in Illinois. Villa Park Village Trustee Bob Wagner (middle) made a recent visit to J&R Cycle at 240 W. St. Charles Road in Villa Park to thank owners Bob and Lorna Pecora for their support in joining other bike shops and officials to persuade the Pritzker administration to designate bike shops as an essential service. The Pecoras noted that they have recently had a steady flow of customers seeking bike service. The business follows guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and the DuPage County Health Department. A hand sanitizer station is available for customers at an entrance to the shop. The Pecoras are careful to clean and disinfect surfaces and products on a regular basis. J&R Cycle is maintaining regular hours, but has chosen to limit the number of customers who enter the store. Customers can arrange for curbside drop-off and pick-up, and can pay over the phone. Only credit card payments are being accepted. Customers are urged to practice social distancing within the store.

“In its discussions thus far, the IHSA Board of Directors has been highly supportive of creating an exemption to the IHSA season limitation bylaw to allow spring sports to play into late June, but competing into or beyond July is not being considered at this time,” the April 1 statement related.

Last week’s IHSA update noted that

if school buildings don’t open for the remainder of the school year, all spring sports seasons are likely to be canceled.

“We are also realistic in recognizing that any further school postponements, or the cessation of physical school attendance for the remainder of the year, will almost certainly result in the cancellation of all remaining IHSA sports and activities this school year.”

The IHSA’s April 1 update related that it’s too early to say definitively that IHSA activities will resume on May 1.

Additionally, it is possible that while schools may reopen, other gatherings, like sports, may remain limited.

The IHSA concluded last week’s update by stating that coaches are allowed to provide guidance on types of workouts and skills that students can complete on a voluntary basis during the mandated school closure.

“This is allowed as long as coaches aren’t requiring individuals from their team to practice the skills or complete the workouts,” the statement noted.

Warrior for all seasons waits to take the field Senior standout Tumilty stays active while 2020 baseball season is on hold STAFF REPORT

It took a pandemic to sideline Willowbrook senior Sam Tumilty.

The three-sport athlete was about to begin his final season as a Warrior when the COVID-19 shutdown closed all K-12 schools in Illinois and ceased all high school athletic competitions and practices.

Tumilty and his teammates on the Willowbrook baseball team were able to get in about two weeks of practice, including a few days on the field, before the shutdown began in the middle of March. The Warriors’ season opener was supposed to take place on March 18.

“I think everyone’s missing sports right now,” said Tumilty. “Life is incomplete without sports, and I think we’re seeing that now.”

Tumilty has been an athletic standout in every season he’s been at Willowbrook. His decorated football career as a Warrior includes three varsity seasons, capped off by the 2019 campaign in which he guided the team to an 11-2 record, three playoff victories and a berth in the IHSA Class 7A semifinals.

A few days after finishing his senior football season—in which he excelled as a quarterback and defensive back—Tumilty suited up for basketball. He provided 12.5 points per game for Willowbrook during the 2019-20 season—his second varsity campaign with the boys basketball program. He also distributed a team-leading 116 assists.

Tumilty was preparing to begin his third season with the varsity baseball team when the COVID-19 shutdown arrived.

“Everyone’s trying to adapt to the situation we’re in right now,” Tumilty said. “It’s pretty weird for everybody. We’re trying to be patient and hope for the best.”

Like millions of other sports fans, Tumilty is missing the routine of watching sports on television; virtually all major college and professional sports have come to a halt during the pandemic. He looks forward to the day when he and everyone else can return to action.

“I’m just trying to stay positive and optimistic,” he said.

November election During his daily news conference March 31, Gov. JB Pritzker addressed questions about voting in the November general election.

“I do think that we’re going to have to look at, for the general election, the idea that we may have to move to significant amount or maybe all mail-in ballots or at least giving people the opportunity to do that,” he said.

But, he said, that’s a decision that would have to be made by the General Assembly, and it is uncertain when the body will meet to discuss such legislation as an operating budget

“We have to find a way to get the Legislature together.

That’s going to be a decision that gets made by the legislative leaders, along with our public health professionals, to determine how you get 177 General Assembly members in the similar area and vote on things,” he said.

School cancellations Indiana and Michigan governors have canceled in-person classes for the rest of the school year. When asked whether he was considering similar action on Thursday, April 2, Pritzker said, “I don’t really have a good answer for you.”

“Will school be canceled for the rest of the year is really a decision that will get made as we get closer, as we enter a peak period whenever that may be—sometime, we think, in the later half of April,” the governor said. “(When) we start to come off that peak, I think we’ll start to be able to make some decisions about what does May look like.”
