Boy Scout’s diaper drive collects about 12,000 diapers for the Outreach House Scout is a Villa Park resident whose drive included collection bins at the Villa Park Public Library
STAFF REPORT
Nicholas Denault of Boy Scout Troop 202 in Lombard organized a diaper drive for the Outreach House, which is located at 24 W. Ash St., Lombard. The drive, which concluded on Saturday, raised approximately 12,000 diapers. The six-week diaper drive featured three drop-offs at the Outreach House. The final drop-off took place on Saturday. Members of the Lombard Service League visited Saturday’s drop-off to provide diapers and a financial donation. Denault, who lives in Villa Park, is a freshman at Marmion Academy in Aurora. Some of his fellow Troop 202 members helped him during the diaper drive. Those helpers included Declan Miller, a Villa Park resident who is a sophomore at Willowbrook High School. Miller joined Denault at Saturday’s drop-off. The Outreach House is a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to people in need in Lombard, Villa Park and the rest of York Township. Its walk-in ministry provides emergency assistance to residents of Lombard and Villa Park. Its First
Things First ministry serves residents throughout York Township. A significant part of the Outreach House’s efforts is concentrated on helping low-income families during the first three years of their children’s lives. Becky Kirsh, the diaper drive chair of the Outreach House, noted on Saturday that the organization distributed about 73,000 diapers during 2020. She said the Outreach House is constantly holding diaper drives, which provide a critical item of support to families in need. According to Kirsh, the Outreach House assisted 2,722 children last year—that total represents a 46-percent increase from the number of children the organization helped in 2019. Denault, who attended St. Pius X School in Lombard before going to Marmion Academy, organized the diaper drive as a Boy Scout service project. He developed his plan for the drive after selling Christmas wreaths to a family friend—Jackie Ernst—who is a member of the Outreach House board. Ernst suggested to Denault that he could conduct a diaper drive for the Outreach House as a service project. Some of the drive’s contributions came from anonymous donors who left diapers in bins Denault set up at the Villa Park Public Library and the Elmhurst Public Library.
