Alex King, longtime local businessman, passes away at 78

If the weather in the area seemed dreary last week, it is likely because the world was made a little sadder after losing one of the bright shining stars of the local business world, as well as in the communities of Elmhurst and Villa Park.

Alex Richard King Jr. passed away March 29, 2022 at the age of 78. He was born on April 10, 1943 in Melrose Park, the son of the late Alex Richard King Sr. and Geraldine (nee Speno) King.

He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Karen (nee Vander Molen) King and the loving father of Kari (Tom) Duffy, Richard King and Robert (Robin) King.

Perhaps his favorite role in the family was as the loving and cherished “Papu” to his grandchildren Brianna, AJ, Paige, Alyssa, Paulie and Jake.

Alex was the dear brother of Deni (Dan) Fiock and Jill (Brian) Brunette; fond uncle of Spencer (Samantha) Fiock and Nick Fiock, and Kiel Brunette and Kory Brunette; and by many more family members as well as friends, tenants and business associates too numerous to count.

Alex was a real estate broker and founding partner of Stenzel, Polster and King Real Estate in Franklin Park. He began his business in 1972 and in 1976, King Construction, Inc., was incorporated as a builder of multi-family dwellings. It was located in the building that still remains at 140 W. St. Charles Road in Villa Park.

According to Andee Jorgensen, his long time office manager and all-around right-hand person for 48 years, the business began as King Decorating, a painting contractor, and next door to them in the building was King Travel, operated by Alex’s

“At that time, we were building a lot of homes in Elmhurst as well as Birch Cove, [the apartment building] in Villa Park,” said Jorgensen. “He also built several townhomes called

Reedy, partnering on several projects. He was a member of the Real Estate Board and was a real estate broker.

A lifelong learner Alex was a lifelong learner.

Throughout his lifetime, he enjoyed collecting arrowheads and conducting archeological digs at the site of the Popham Colony in Phippsburg, Maine. He tried to manage a trip out to Popham every year.

He published a book about Popham Colony, written at the fifth-grade reading level, so that young students could understand about the area he loved so dearly. Alex often spoke to young people in school groups and Scout troops, and very much enjoyed that part of his life that he devoted as a commitment to the community.

He was member of both the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce. King Construction was once named the Villa Park Chamber’s Business of the Year.

Most of all, Alex was quick with a laugh and never too busy to sit down and offer wisdom to those who sought him for it. Alex took time for long talks about not only real estate, but also business in general, as well as history and philosophy. He kept a smile and a welcome face even when his health began to decline.

Shifts in food purchase patterns could be permanent

The pandemic greatly accelerated online food purchases and created a new revenue stream for many restaurants in the form of curbside sales.

And now, even as masks come off with the lifting of mandates at many locations around the U.S., those trends in the food industry are expected to continue or even grow.

Andrew Harig, vice president of tax, trade, sustainability and policy for the Food Industry Association, and Hudson Riehle, of the National Restaurant Association, discussed food industry trends during USDA’s 98th annual Ag Outlook Forum.

“2021 was one of the most difficult years we’ve faced, even more so than 2020, with COVID, supply chain disruptions and inflation that carried into 2022,” Harig said.

“Consumers are being remarkably resilient. We’ve seen a big rise in online shopping, but a real anxiousness to get back to stores to select items for themselves.”

A recent survey shows consumers’ preferred method of shopping is a combination of in-store and online at 35%, followed by 34% in-store only and 28% online. The remaining 3% reported no preference.

These shopping trends are expected to continue with nearly twothirds of consumers now purchasing at least a portion of their food online.

The top influencers of food purchases are good value, product quality and overall price, Harig reported.

Meanwhile, the restaurant industry bounced back last year from tremendous losses in 2020, but nowhere near pre-pandemic levels. Restaurant sales totaled just $659 billion in 2020 (down from a forecast entering the year of $899 billion) before recovering to around $800 billion last year.

“There has been some recovery from the depths of the pandemic,” Riehle said. “And (sales) continue to improve, but it looks to be another year of transition.”

The food service industry continues to deal with a shift in sales from

in-house to takeout, high food and transportation costs, and a lack of available workers. Wholesale food price inflation jumped 7.8% last year.

Only six states had as many or more food service workers at the end of February compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to Riehle.

In Illinois, the number of food service workers is still down about 12% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

“On-premises restaurant dining is still down significantly,” Riehle said.

“Drive-through, curbside and delivery has been a lifeline to the industry.”

Looking ahead, Riehle foresees more streamlining of menus in restaurants to adjust for supply issues along with the use of more technology and more online orders.

“It’s going to be a while before we can make adjustments to get the supply side caught up,” Harig said.

“Really, for the first time, I think a lot of consumers are beginning to realize just how complex the supply chain can be.”

And the situation is even more complex now due to drought in South America and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Those two countries account for about 29% of global wheat exports.

“The inflation story is really an energy and food price spike story,” Jacob Shapiro, chief strategist for Perch Perspectives, told FarmWeek.

In Europe, for instance, energy prices were up more than 28% year over year and food prices increased more than 5% while other items increased just 2.3%, Shapiro noted.

“The Russia-Ukraine war will only exacerbate that,” he said. “Unless (the two sides) reach a settlement soon, expect higher inflation, especially driven by energy and food prices.”

The Villa Park Public Library is joining libraries across the state of Illinois to host actor, author and woodworker Nick Offerman in conversation with musician, author and hiking buddy Jeff Tweedy—coming to us live from the wilderness.

Offerman and Tweedy will discuss Offerman’s most recent book, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside. The event will be held virtually at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Offerman is best known for his breakout role as Ron Swanson in the hit TV series Parks and Recreation.

Offerman has established himself as a well-known and witty actor. He is also a New York Times bestseller.

Offerman has authored three other books including “Gumption”; is the co-author of “The Greatest Love Story Ever Told,” and publishes “The Donkey Thoughts Substack” newsletter. In his spare time, he can be found at his L.A. woodshop building hand-crafted items from wood.

Joining him in conversation will be Tweedy, who inspired Offerman to use their walks and conversations in nature to write “Where the Deer and the Antelope Play.”

Best known as the founding member and leader of the American rock band Wilco, Tweedy is one of contemporary music’s most accomplished songwriters, musicians and performers. He is also the author of two New York Times bestsellers: “Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back)” and “How to Write One Song.”

Most recently, Tweedy writes and publishes music weekly in his Substack newsletter, “Starship Casual.”

Willowbrook student named a Coca-Cola Scholar

Willowbrook High School senior Eric Veal Jr. has been named a 2022 Coca-Cola Scholar. There were more than 68,000 applicants for the Coca-Cola Scholarship, with 1,617 chosen as semifinalists and 251 selected as regional finalists; 150 students were named Coca-Cola Scholars.

The scholarship winners were chosen for exemplifying superior leadership, service and academics. As a Coca-Cola Scholar, Veal will receive a $20,000 college scholarship. Veal, who is an inductee of the National Honor Society (NHS), is serving as the president of Willowbrook’s NHS chapter during the current school year. He has been named to Willowbrook’s Distinction Honor Roll in each semester of his high school career. Veal, who has applied to multiple universities, plans to double major in political science and secondary education, with an emphasis in social studies.

Warriors finish March with a 15-0 victory over Oak Lawn STAFF REPORT

Willowbrook’s badminton team completed a busy opening stretch of its 2022 season with a 15-0 dual-meet victory over Oak Lawn in Villa Park on March 24.

The Warriors began their season with a 13-2 dual-meet win at Wheaton-Warrenville South on March 14.

Willowbrook traveled to Downers Grove North for a quad on March 16.

The Warriors beat Andrew 8-0, but suffered a 5-3 loss to Downers Grove North and an 8-0 loss to Hinsdale Central.

Willowbrook earned a second-place finish in the team results of the seven-team Shepard Invite on March 19. The Warriors then battled two teams in a March 21 triangular event in Villa Park. Willowbrook beat Oak Forest 8-0 and dropped a 6-2 decision to Glenbard East.

Willowbrook opened its West Suburban Gold Conference season with an 11-4 loss in a dual meet at Hinsdale South on March 23.

The Willowbrook baseball team improved its overall season record to 3-1 with last week’s 7-3 win at Maine South. The Warriors scored six runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-1 lead in the March 29 contest in Park Ridge.

Senior Jake Kutella went 2-for3 and drove in two runs for Willowbrook in its victory over Maine South. Junior Isaac Sobieszczyk, junior Joey Tumilty and senior Brendan DeMay each drove in one run.

Senior Max Vaisvila, who pitched the first five and one-third innings for the Warriors, earned the victory. Vaisvila allowed four hits and two earned runs. He recorded seven strikeouts and gave up two walks.

Senior Jacob Skinner pitched the

final one and two-third innings for Willowbrook. Skinner didn’t give up any hits. He struck out two batters and issued one walk. Skinner helped the Warriors out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning by inducing a bases-loaded double play to end the inning.

Willowbrook’s games against Batavia, Oak Park/River Forest and Andrew were canceled last week because of poor weather. The Warriors’ schedule this week includes the opening three-game series of the West Suburban Gold Conference season.

Willowbrook will battle Downers Grove South in this week’s series. Two of the three games will be played in Villa Park.

Prep Insight Magazine and the EAR Sportsmen’s Club 4-H recently honored Willowbrook football coach Nick Hildreth as one of the Great Coaches of the Year during the ALL-Access Coaches Award Reception. “You have changed the lives of so many young men by giving them the opportunity to play football and preparing them to go on and play for many colleges and universities,” Garret Gosha, Prep Insight Magazine Publisher, said in a press release. “You have changed lives by teaching character and team discipline that will strengthen them forever.” Hildreth, a 2000 Willowbrook graduate who was a wide receiver for the Warriors, has been Willowbrook’s head football coach for 11 years. Under his leadership, the team has qualified for the IHSA playoffs each season since 2016 (excluding 2020, when there wasn’t an IHSA post-season because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Willowbrook has advanced to at least the quarterfinal round of the playoffs in each of the last five full football seasons. Willowbrook won three playoff games in 2019 to advance to the semifinal round of that year’s IHSA Class 7A playoffs. The program has won the West Suburban Gold Conference title every year since 2017. “This recognition is a reflection of Coach Hildreth’s dedication, his staff and his current and former athletes,” said Brandon Murphy, Willowbrook’s athletic director. “Coach Hildreth prides himself on his team’s culture. He and his staff have created a family-like atmosphere that focuses on relationships with one another, the athletes and the community. Coach Hildreth works relentlessly with a laser-like focus toward success for his athletes on and off the field. This leadership has led to a program that has maintained success for many years and continues to develop leaders after high school. Congratulations, Coach Hildreth. Slices of life Last weekend I dove headfirst down a deep rabbit hole. And, as those of us with rabbit hole experience can attest, once you hop in there is no going back.

It started innocently enough, as most rabbit hole ventures do.

I recently got a haircut and have decided to embrace my naturally wavy/curly, albeit fine, hair. I have a lot of hair, but its baby-fine texture sometimes makes volume an issue.

Curls require volume, so I hit the Google with “Best shampoo for curly fine hair,” which resulted in numerous websites with lists of the best products for my particular needs.

I clicked on one list and the journey began. I was confronted with various brand names, some I recognized, some I did not. The lists listed numerous facts for each shampoo including scent, ingredient list, price, where to purchase and whether the shampoo was cruelty-free.

Say what? Call me naive (because I am) but I thought the whole animal testing thing was outlawed sometime during the days of eight-track tapes.

Turns out I was wrong.

Some of the brand names I recognized very well were not considered cruelty free. Yep. They test their products on animals “when required to do so” and can’t promise that those tests aren’t cruel.

You see how this rabbit hole sucked me in? I am a lot of things, but I hope to think that cruel is not one of them. I’d much rather be seen as kind.

I think most of us can relate.

I knew I had to find out more so I

re-visited my go-to search engine.

Turns out, one particular country (hint: it starts with “Ch”) still requires animal testing on certain products in order for those products to be sold on their soil. Some companies choose not to sell their products in this country; others overlook this little detail in the name of profit, and not only allow animal testing but even pay for it as well.

My mouth was wide open at this point.

I want my high-needs hair to look good, but not at the expense of an innocent bunny rabbit or any of its offspring. I’m also not questioning a company’s need to make a profit. I get it. But at what cost? That’s a personal question for all of us; I may have my answer, you may have yours—and that’s OK. As my search continued. I learned that another key word when looking for cruelty-free is “vegan.” I like meat

as much as anyone, but not in my shampoo or beauty products.

I think my big take-away is that not all products are cruelty-free. Call me innocent, but I thought we were way beyond that. Sigh.

I spent the day reading reviews and ended up ordering a couple of shampoos and conditioners (as well as a curl-activating product) that are all vegan, cruelty-free and (even better) they didn’t break the bank.

My life is again filled with hope, not only for the bunnies of the globe, but my hair as well.

Here’s hoping that any rabbit holes in my future only serve to help bunnies, not hurt them – and that my new products are as kind to my hair as they are to the planet.

The Illinois Senate voted against one of the governor’s picks to continue serving on the Prisoner Review Board—due to her approval of granting early prison release for criminals convicted of murdering police officers.

Attributing to her vote against the appointment, state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) released the following statement: “When police officers lose their lives at the hands of criminals—their families, departments and communities suffer insurmountable, unjustifiable loss.

By releasing these convicted criminals early from prison, our state is setting a dangerous precedent concerning the integrity of the criminal justice system.

“Conscientious individuals must serve on the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, and I urge the governor to choose accredited, diligent appointees.”

of representative democracy for more than two centuries. In their ideal form, they allow lawmakers to describe their work at home and in Washington and to listen to the concerns of their constituents. Open and vigorous dialogue benefits policymakers and the public.

However, the nature of the town hall meeting has changed dramatically in the last decade or so, driven by deepening political polarization and advances in technology, especially the revolution of social media.

Both conservative and liberal activist groups often regard town hall meetings as opportunities to confront lawmakers they oppose and create embarrassing moments that can be captured on camera and then disseminated through social media. Even before COVID-19, many in Congress began to hold only virtual town hall meetings in which constituents attended via phone, internet or Zoom. These meetings are often tightly controlled and often fuel public anger and skepticism about the political process.

Paul Simon powerfully summarized the value of in-person town hall meetings: “It’s one thing to read about the farm problem, much different to talk to flesh-and-blood people whose agony is written on their faces and in what they say,” he wrote. “It’s one thing to know unemployment statistics, another to talk to a mother who is worried about the mental health of her son because he can’t find a job. The people who took time to attend town meetings held in every corner of the state helped me to become a better senator.”

By John T. Shaw Several years ago, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute was invited to join a dozen universities in the United States to promote bipartisan collaboration and productive discourse at the state and local level.

The Institute developed a plan to strengthen how congressional town hall meetings are conducted in Illinois.

Our recommendations outlined ways these meetings could be more informative, civil, respectful and productive. We sent our ideas to members of the Illinois congressional delegation and received encouraging responses. Then COVID-19 descended in 2020 and disrupted all our lives. In-person town hall meetings seemed ill-advised and unsafe during a pandemic.

Even if COVID-19 had not battered our world, we were aware that in-person town halls are threatened by other pervasive and pernicious diseases in the United States—the rise in political polarization, the decline of civility, and the atrophy of our collective ability as Americans to discuss contentious issues constructively, without rancor or acrimony.

The twin maladies of COVID-19 and political polarization upended in-person town hall meetings in Illinois and elsewhere.

The institute is not giving up on its conviction that town hall meetings are an important instrument to revive our democracy.

Civility must be the coin of the realm. Town hall meetings should be restructured as listening and learning sessions that center on lawmakers hearing the

views of constituents. They should be moderated by a nonpartisan community leader who sets the tone for a respectful discussion.

The range of people who attend town halls should be widened so the audience is more diverse and includes both partisans and independents.

There is no magic solution

to rescue and revive town hall meetings. Success ultimately depends on the goodwill and respect of both the public and policymakers.

As we approach the spring of 2022, there are cautious reports that the pandemic is easing. Hopefully we can soon contemplate in-person events, albeit with appropriate public health precautions.

I will take it as a good sign about the health of our nation and our democracy when we are able to revive town hall meetings that are both safe and civil. It is important to relearn that we can exchange views with public officials and fellow citizens in a spirited and civil way. We are all custodians of a remarkable country and state—

and citizens of the same political community.

Five Willowbrook High School students displayed their artwork during the recent Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) in Chicago. The participating Willowbrook students included senior Arianna Sanchez, (top left) who earned Honorable Mention recognition in the Design category and was offered $324,000 in scholarships from numerous universities. Senior Tess Placek (above) received a Silver Award in Pottery.

Willowbrook’s other participants in the exhibition were senior Eric Duffey (Painting), senior Guadalupe Flores (Mixed Media) and senior Elainey Cervantes (left) (Sculpture).

Cervantes also took part in the IHSAE/ ArtConnectED Art Throwdown—a fast-paced competition in which students were given a timed, hands-on challenge. Cervantes competed in the Mixed Media category; the challenge was figure drawing.
