Traditionally a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings, the daffodils provide an uplifting representation of those who are winning the fight against this deadly virus.

In addition, each COVID-19 inpatient who is being discharged will leave the hospital with a real daffodil and note of encouragement as well.

To date, Edward-Elmhurst Health has discharged more than 300 patients who were treated for

coronavirus.

“Watch as the fields of daffodils — and the number of patients who are healing and recovering — grow over the coming weeks,” Mastro said.

The DuPage County Health Department has recorded more than 2,400 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county.

The health department’s COVID-19 case map, which is also referred to as a dashboard, links data from the DuPage County Health Department into the GIS Data Systems from DuPage County to provide a greater level of understanding into how the COVID-19 pandemic is unfolding across the county.

Updated daily, the dashboard includes the age range, gender and the community of residence of each identified case in DuPage County.

As of April 26, the data on the health department’s dashboard indicated 2,447 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in DuPage County, including 131 deaths.

The data from April 26 showed 77 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Villa Park residents, along with 114 cases among Lombard residents and 11 cases affecting residents of Oakbrook Terrace.

One week earlier, the dashboard’s April 19 update indicated a total of 1,693 confirmed COVID-19 cases in DuPage County, including 87 deaths.

The information from April 19 showed 64 cases among Villa Park residents, 89 cases in Lombard residents and nine cases among residents of Oakbrook Terrace.

According to the county’s dashboard, the first case of COVID-19 in DuPage County was confirmed on March 13.

The DuPage County Health Department has stated that the number of positive cases is likely much higher than listed because of unreported or untested cases in the community.

The age range statistics in the DuPage County Health Department’s April 26 report indicate that 418 confirmed COVID-19 cases are in residents between the ages of 5059. There are 411 cases in the 40-49 age group and 372 cases among residents ages 60-69. The April 26 update showed 221 confirmed cases in the 70-79 age group, and 306 cases in residents 80 and older.

There April 26 report showed 356 confirmed cases among residents between the ages of 30-39. There were 309 cases in the 20-29 age group, 36 cases in residents ages 10-19, and 18 cases in children 9 and under.

The county’s April 26 update showed that about 51 percent of the confirmed COVID-19 cases in DuPage County affected women, with approximately 49 percent affecting men.

IDPH provides statewide COVID-19 statistics The Illinois Department of Health

(IDPH) in Springfield provided its statewide daily COVID-19 information on April 26. According to that update, there were 43,903 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state, including 1,933 deaths. The IDPH’s April 26 report noted that nearly 215,000 total tests for COVID-19 had been performed in Illinois.

The April 26 update from the IDPH stated that of the 1,933 deaths in Illinois related to COVID-19, 740 of the deaths are in Chicago, while 573 are reportedly elsewhere in Cook County.

About 68 percent of the COVID-19 deaths in Illinois, therefore, (1,313 of 1,933) are in Cook County.

Cook County is the state’s most populous county, and the second-most populous county in the United States.

About 5.1 million people live in Cook County. Its residents account for about 41 percent of the nearly 12.7 million people who live in Illinois.

According to the April 26 report from the IDPH, 11 of the state’s 102 counties have recorded at least 10 deaths related to COVID-19. In addition to the 1,313 deaths in Cook County, there have been 133 deaths in Will County, 131 in DuPage County and 118 in Lake County.

The IDPH information from April 26 indicated 39 COVID-19 related deaths in Kane County, 28 deaths in McHenry County, 24 deaths in St. Clair County and 23 deaths in Kankakee County.

There were 16 deaths related to COVID-19 in Madison County, 11 deaths in Macon County, and 10 deaths in Monroe County, reported the IDPH in its April 26 update.

According to the IDPH, 56 of the 102 counties in Illinois reported zero deaths related to COVID-19 as of

April 26.

The IDPH statistics include age demographics of the 1,933 COVID-19 related deaths in Illinois. Of the 1,933 reported deaths, 807 (nearly 42 percent) were in residents ages 80 and older. The April 26 update showed 506 of the deaths were in residents ages 70-79, while 334 deaths were among residents ages 60-69. About 85 percent (1,647) of the state’s 1,933 COVID-related deaths, therefore, were in residents 60 and older.

The IDPH statistics showed 170 COVID-19 related deaths among residents in the 50-59 age group. There were 73 deaths among residents between the ages of 40-49, and 31 deaths in the 30-39 age group. The April 26 report showed 10 deaths in residents between the ages of 20-29, and two deaths in residents under the age of 20.

The April 26 update from the IDPH announced 59 additional deaths in the state, which raised the total of COVID-19 deaths in the state to 1,933.

Of the 59 additional deaths announced on April 26, five were in DuPage County. Those five deaths included two males in their 60s, two males in their 80s and one male in his 90s.

The IDPH update from one day earlier—April 25—announced 80 additional deaths, including two in DuPage County. Those two deaths included a female in her 90s and a male in his 90s.

The April 24 report announced 108 additional deaths, including seven deaths in DuPage County. Those deaths included one female in her 60s, one male in his 80s, three females in their 90s and two males in their 90s.

The report from April 23 announced 123 additional COVID-19 deaths in the state, including 14 in DuPage County.

According to the IDPH in its April 26 report, about 50.2 percent (22,026) of the nearly 44,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state were in women, while about 48.1 percent (21,102) were in men. There were 775 reported cases in which the gender was either unknown or left blank.

While there is a fairly even split among women and men in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Illinois, about 58 percent (1,124) of the COVID-19 related deaths involve males, while about 42 percent (807) involve females. The gender of two of the residents among the 1,933 deaths was unknown or left blank.

In a recent update with Gov. JB Pritzker, IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike stated that all deaths of people who tested positive for COVID-19 were counted as COVID-19 deaths, even if they died of alternate causes.

“The case definition is very simplistic,” said Ezike during the April 19 news conference. “It means at the time of death, it was a COVID positive diagnosis. So that means that if you were in hospice, and had already been given, you know, a few weeks to live, and then you also were found to have COVID, that would be counted as a COVID death. Technically, even if you died of a clear alternate cause, but you had COVID at the same time, it’s still listed as a COVID death. So, everyone who’s listed as a COVID death doesn’t mean that that was the cause of the death, but they had COVID at the time of death.”

The IDPH updates note that all its reported data are provisional and will change.

(Continued from page 3) “It is important to understand that there are currently no FDA-approved medications for the treatment of the coronavirus,” Williams said. “All medications that are currently being used are being done so based on clinical experience gained from treating other diseases.”

Information coming from other parts of the world, such as China and South Korea, is being considered when making decisions about which medications to use and when.

“New information is being disseminated daily,” Williams said. “This new information is constantly being reviewed and evaluated to determine if and when we should incorporate new medications into our treatment decisions and when we should alter what is currently being done.”

Current treatment for mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms may include supportive care such as hydration (IV fluids), pain and fever control, and breathing treatments.

Sometimes antibiotics are used to treat concurrent bacterial infections, according to Williams.

There is some information cautioning patients about taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen (Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). This information has not been studied or confirmed and therefore, it is difficult to make a recommendation, according to Williams. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is an effective medication for mild pain and fever control.

Patients with more severe symptoms are typically admitted to the hospital and treated with various medications to slow the progression of the disease and relieve symptoms.

Some patients need supplementary oxygen and mechanical ventilation support.

Vaccine could take up to two years to develop Many are wondering when a vaccine to prevent COVID-19 will become available.

“It typically takes 18-24 months to develop a safe and effective vaccine,” Williams said. “We are all hoping that this time frame will be shortened but there are no guarantees of when a vaccine will be available.”

Doctors continue to emphasize the importance of infection prevention and control measures to slow the spread of the virus.

“For now, our best defense is social distancing and limiting your exposure to others to prevent transmission of the virus,” he said. “Stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, eat healthy foods and isolate yourself as much as possible.”

Williams noted that treatment information is changing daily and medications are being added and removed based on evolving experience and information about COVID-19.

Fortunately, most people who become ill with COVID-19 will be able to recover at home. However, a person should seek immediate medical attention if they begin to experience more severe symptoms, such as an elevated fever, shortness of breath and/or trouble breathing.

Stay-at-home order to be extended through May

Gov. JB Pritzker said April 23 that Illinois’ novel coronavirus data necessitated an extension of his stay-athome order through the end of May. The current executive order will expire May 1, at which time an order with “some modifications” will take effect.

• Masks will be mandatory for all residents above the age of 2, who can “medically tolerate a face covering,” when in a public place, the governor said.

• State parks will begin to open, although social distancing measures must be obeyed in them.

• Retail stores not currently deemed “essential businesses” will be allowed to take customer orders online or over the phone and can fulfill them by delivery or pick-up.

• New social distancing guidance is planned for essential businesses as well, which also in May must adhere to a new cap on customers allowed inside at one time.

• Illinoisans forced to postpone surgeries and tests so hospitals could increase capacity for COVID-19 patients will be able to begin rescheduling some of them. Both Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike declined to specify which procedures are still under a moratorium.

Before health care centers can begin performing surgeries, their officials must meet the state health department’s “exact specifications,” Pritzker said. Hospitals must have enough personal protective gear and ensure bed capacity is sufficient to handle new COVID-19 patients. Potential procedure recipients must also be proven to not have the virus.

“I know that even with these changes, this stay-at-home order leaves many restrictions in place and in the coming weeks, as we get to the point of working our way down the other side of the peak, there will be more to do to get people back to work and open up even more,” Pritzker said.

“Understand that these are not choices that are made arbitrarily,” he added. “These changes are what data says we can offer the people of Illinois without risking so much viral

transmission that our hospitals will again become or potentially become overrun.”

The governor warned March and April’s restrictions will be implemented again if residents are found to be “breaking the rules.”

IDPH reported the state has over 36,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, up by 1,826 from April 22 as 8,970 test results were reported in the past 24 hours—the second-largest single-day increase. The virus has been confirmed in 96 of Illinois’ 102 counties.

That data is only one resource Pritzker said he consults when making novel coronavirus-related decisions. He also checks the number of Illinoisans who are hospitalized, in an intensive care unit and on a ventilator.

All that information is compiled by a “cohort” of experts recruited to serve in the state’s modeling group, the governor said. The group is tasked with analyzing daily statistics and developing a projection for how many new cases and deaths will occur in Illinois over time.

Pritzker said he uses more than one model, each of which changes as new data is collected, to arrive at the best decision. They become more accurate over time.

“There is no crystal ball available to us—there are only estimates,” the governor said. “... A model is an imperfect tool that we use to add context to the actual numbers that we can chart every day—cases, fatalities, hospitalizations, positive test results, ventilator and ICU usage.”

Developing a projection is also difficult, said Nigel Goldenfeld, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Astrobiology Institute for Universal Biology.

“Modeling an epidemic is rather like modeling the trajectory of a rocket, when you don’t know where it started from, what direction it was pointing and how much fuel is aboard the rocket,” Goldenfeld said.

“Modeling an epidemic is not rocket science — it’s harder.”

Lawmaker sues Pritzker, COVID-19 alleges improper use updates for DuPage County of emergency powers As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 26, there were 2,447 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 131 deaths.

Of those 492 were outbreakassociated, while 1,955 were not. Since Saturday, there were 97 new cases and four deaths reported.

DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) announces four additional deaths of persons with COVID-19 infection reported since Saturday: • Male resident of a Naperville long-term care facility in his 80s with underlying conditions; • Male resident of an Elmhurst long-term care facility in his 90s with underlying conditions; • Male resident of DuPage County in his 60s with underlying conditions who had been living in the community; and, • Male resident of a Carol Stream long-term care facility in his 80s with underlying conditions.

Governor’s state of emergency should last for only 30 days, according to lawsuit

Gov. JB Pritzker’s state of emergency should have expired April 8, an Illinois lawmaker says in a lawsuit, rendering improper his subsequent actions related to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Republican Rep. Darren Bailey, of Xenia, said during a video news conference April 24 he does not dispute COVID-19 is a public health crisis.

But he says the governor overstepped authority granted to him by the Illinois Emergency Management Act. According to his lawsuit, filed April 23, the act grants a governor emergency powers for only 30 days to ensure “a quick response to a disaster.” During that time, the Legislature has “ample time to convene and address whether any laws need to be codified to further protect the health, safety and welfare” of residents.

Pritzker established a state of emergency on March 9 for “a period not to exceed 30 days,” according to statute.

His stay-at-home order was instituted March 20 to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On April 1, the governor announced the novel coronavirus pandemic was a “continuing public health emergency,” and signed an order extending the disaster proclamation.

Bailey’s attorney, Thomas Devore, said April 24 that Illinois law does not allow for that action. He is asking a state court to agree that Pritzker’s emergency powers should have lapsed April 8, and to deem all subsequent proclamations and orders invalid.

“Pritzker seemingly believes he can issue continuing proclamations recognizing the same COVID-19 pandemic as a ‘continuing disaster’ every 30 days whereby he can continually invoke the emergency powers of the Illinois Emergency Management Act into perpetuity,” DeVore wrote in a court filing.

“If the Legislature intended to delegate the Office of the Governor the emergency powers for the complete duration of a continuing disaster they would have written as much into the (act),” he added.

The lawsuit applies to only Bailey—meaning it seeks to release the representative from Illinois’ stay-at-

home restriction—but any judicial action is likely to apply to all state residents.

Pritzker, in response to a reporter’s question about the lawsuit on April 24, said COVID-19 qualifies as an emergency and pointed out the federal government’s disaster proclamation is still active.

“Frankly, I think that a lawsuit about whether or not this is an emergency is a political maneuver at a time when we probably shouldn’t be dealing with politics but rather simply addressing the emergency that, no matter what political party you belong to … you are subject to,” he said.

A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, which is representing Pritzker in court, said it is “reviewing the lawsuit.”

Bailey said that while the current political climate might suggest his lawsuit was politically motivated, he said that is not the case.

“The people that know me in the 109th district ... know something different,” he said. “They know I’m passionate about this. They know that I’m in this for my family, I’m in this to restore Illinois,” Bailey said. “... I know that’s a good political stump speech, but you’re just going to have to get to know me a little bit better to realize I don’t play games. I grab a hold of opportunity when opportunity comes and that’s what I’m doing here.”

Bailey and DeVore are also asking the court to urge lawmakers to address this. There is no concession in law allowing for the General Assembly to meet remotely or by a video conference, for example, so the 177 members would need to convene in person.

Pritzker on April 24 said legislators are considered essential under his order, so they are permitted to return to Springfield in consultation with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

How and when that happens is up to Senate and House leaders.

There was a hearing scheduled Monday in Clay County court. DeVore said the speed with which this case progresses is dependent on what tactic the attorney general’s office takes.

Bailey added he is paying for the lawsuit personally, not with campaign funds.

But what about the unemployment numbers? You’ve had over 26 million people filing for unemployment across the country in five weeks, and that’s even with all the stimulus from the federal government. I looked up that Illinois has processed more than 750,000 unemployment claims and the real time unemployment rate is 20 percent. What about the people who are likely going to die from suicide, drug overdoses, alcohol abuse and other stress-related ailments due to unemployment? I also read that domestic violence cases are going up. Will the media keep track of deaths related to unemployment like they do with the coronavirus? Let me answer that for you. Of course not! *** Students and staff members are issued identification at local high schools. Students and staff are expected to carry their identification, if not wear it around their necks, while they are at school. Has anyone ever claimed it’s racist to make kids and staff members have ID at school? Of course not.

Remember the restaurants? They have been closed to dine-in customers since March 16. This state was in terrible shape fiscally before the coronavirus hit. It’s going to be that much worse by the time Pritzker decides to start opening things up again. *** I am almost amused at how quickly companies have scrambled to make new TV and radio commercials to fit the COVID-19 pandemic narrative.

District 88 is partnering with District 45, Salt Creek School District 48, Addison School District 4, Arbor Management, Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to provide meals to students while school buildings are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The food service program provides meals free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18.

Beginning on April 7, five days worth of food (five breakfasts and five lunches) were distributed. Five days worth of food will be provided each Tuesday while school buildings are closed to on-site learning.

The next distribution of five days worth of food will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 5.

They shouldn’t go to school. They shouldn’t go to church. They shouldn’t go to parks. They shouldn’t exercise their right to protest. Democrats also believe that it’s all right to let in immigrants from all over the world. According to Democrats, any effort to curb that is hateful, racist, xenophobic, etc.

What happened to Democrats? What happened to common sense? *** DuPage County Board, please put taxpayers first, before the school districts who seem so concerned about getting their money from us. The districts don’t want the board to waive late fees because they want their money and they want it now. If nobody ever paid their taxes late, there would

be no late fees, so to me, that money is a bonus; icing on the cake. Other counties are cutting taxpayers a break.

Please make those who elected you the priority. We have to wait for any help, from unemployment or the stimulus check. The school districts, which we pay for, needs to do the same. *** I’m sure that teachers, principals, administrators and school board members would say that “We are all in this together,” regarding the current COVID-19 crisis. If that’s the case, will schools be temporarily cutting the pay of their teachers, administrators and staff members, who have clearly seen their workloads reduced since the middle of March? Will spring coaches be paid in full, even though the seasons have been wiped out? Will homeowners receive some kind of property tax rebate, as schools won’t be open to regular classes during the last two-plus months of the school year? *** Now that more and more of us in the private sector are either losing our businesses, losing our jobs or getting our pay or hours cut because of the coronavirus, I think it’s about time the public sector and school districts start tightening their belts. Our first property tax installment is due on June 1.

Since many businesses have been shut down due to the virus, it seems obvious there will be less tax revenue coming in for the foreseeable future, especially sales taxes. As far as I’m concerned, no more referendums and no more property-tax increases. Villages and school districts have to find ways to start making due with less, just like we do. ***

According to the Washington Post, Joe Biden was ranked 506th in a class of 688 students when he graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965. He then went on to law school at Syracuse University, where he graduated 76th out of class of 85. While at law school, he earned an “F” in a class for committing plagiarism. He lifted five pages from someone else’s published article and used them in his own paper. More than 30 years ago, these allegations forced him to withdraw from the presidential race. *** Remember Y2K? The New Year’s Eve in 1999 when all the computers would stop working, the electricity would not work and the water wouldn’t turn on and the stock market would crash because of predictions by experts. These same experts are now doing predictions about COVID-19 and forcing us all to stay at home. *** Time for Illinois to start getting back on track. Wear masks, practice social distancing. The millionaire politicians, who continue to receive full paychecks, won’t let us work. If we can’t work, we can’t pay property taxes, we can’t buy things and the state and village lose sales tax. How soon until the village starts laying off employees, including police and fire? This “shutdown” cannot continue. Many businesses that are closed will never reopen. That is a permanent loss of sales tax. People are able to walk and chew gum. We can figure this out. This is not a slam to anyone, but this has never happened before and the politicians don’t know what to do or should do. It is all trial and error.

District 88 to hold virtual graduation for Willowbrook’s Class of 2020 on May 17

Online ceremony will include a reading of graduates’ names; an in-person service may be held at a later date

District 88 announced last week it will host a virtual commencement ceremony next month for Willowbrook High School’s Class of 2020. The event will take place on Sunday, May 17—the previously scheduled date of this year’s ceremony.

The originally scheduled May 17 service, which was supposed to take place in the school’s main gymnasium, has been cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual ceremony will include messages from members of Willowbrook’s Class of 2020, which includes nearly 500 students. Members of the District 88 Board of Education and district administrators will also provide messages during the virtual service.

The upcoming event will include the reading of graduates’ names, and will be made available to view on May 17.

“We are looking to host an in-person ceremony at a later date as well, when it is determined we can safely gather for large events,” stated District 88 Superintendent Scott Helton in a message to district families last week.

Helton added that there will be a process for Willowbrook seniors to receive all of their applicable end-ofyear items, including graduation caps and gowns, cords, diplomas, recognition certificates and yearbooks, prior to graduation.

District 88 is also finalizing plans to provide each member of Willowbrook’s Class of 2020 with a yard sign,

free of charge.

Willowbrook has been closed to on-site instruction since the end of regular classes on March 13. Students continued their education with online instruction during the weeks of March 16 and March 23. Willowbrook had its regularly scheduled spring break during the week of March 30. Online instruction resumed during the week of April 6, and will continue through the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

On April 17, Gov. JB Pritzker announced that all K-12 schools in Illinois would be closed for the rest of the current school year. The last day of Willowbrook’s current school year for freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be Friday, May 22.

The signs outside of two Villa Park schools indicate the schools are closed to onsite learning. Gov. JB Pritzker announced earlier this month that all K-12 schools in Illinois would remain closed to on-site instruction for the rest of the 2019-20 school year. Area school buildings have been closed since the end of classes on March 13.

‘A message of hope’

For the first time during the Covid-19 crisis, several West Suburban-based celebrities have banded together for an inspirational video titled “Message of Hope.” Tom Higgenson from The Plain White T’s, Anita Padilla from Fox 32 News and comic actor Matt Kissane, pictured below, (“Chicago Med,” “WGN Morning News”) are all featured in the nearly six-minute presentation.

“I was asked to be part of this very special PSA by my friend and local Villa Park Trustee Kevin Patrick,” said Kissane from his Villa Park home. “It’s the least I can do seeing how my daughter attends school here and so many of the families here in Villa Park and surrounding DuPage County are going through this.”

Patrick (pictured above) said this is “a really difficult time for us all ... we’re all dealing with it in our different ways,” and he wanted to make the video as “a way to engage our community in Villa Park.”

Patrick said there were over 5,000 views in the first few days it aired. Scholarship deadline extended to May 1 State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is reminding local students that the deadline for the Conference of Women Legislators scholarship is extended to Friday, May 1.

“The Conference of Women Legislators scholarship is unique in that it is specifically for women aged 25 and older who have had to delay their education but are working hard to lay the groundwork and build the skills necessary for a lifetime of success,” said Conroy, who co-founded and serves as the first Chair of the House Democratic Women’s Caucus. “As a woman in government, I am grateful for resources like this

scholarship that help all women attain their goals.”

COWL is a non-profit, bipartisan organization comprised of current and former female legislators. The COWL scholarship is intended for women 25 years of age or older who are looking to begin or complete their education.

Students must plan to attend an accredited school in Illinois for at least 6 semester hours online or on campus.

The one-year undergraduate scholarship will cover tuition, books and fees for up to $2,500 for the 2020-21 academic year. Up to 10 awards will

be given. Applicants may submit an unofficial transcript with their application. Awardees must provide official transcripts before the granting of scholarships. Applications may be submitted online at www.COWLIL. com.

“These scholarship funds can be used for tuition as well as books and fees, filling a need gap as most scholarships that are limited to tuition costs,” Conroy added. “With this new extended deadline, I encourage all local women who intend to further their education this upcoming school year to apply online before May 1.”

IDNR to reopen select sites for limited activities May 1 Campgrounds, playgrounds and other amenities will remain closed

To allow Illinois residents to engage in some outdoor activities, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will reopen select state parks, recreation areas fish and wildlife areas and trails beginning May 1.

Visitors to the reopened sites will be required to comply with social distancing guidelines and other COVID-19 best practices.

The IDNR sites that will reopen May 1are listed below. All other IDNR sites, including state historic sites, will remain closed until further notice.

Visitors to reopened IDNR sites should bring alcohol-based hand sanitizer (containing at least 60 percent alcohol) and face coverings. Additional health and safety guidelines include: • Practice social distancing by keeping at least six feet of distance between yourself and others; • Please stay home if you are sick or feeling any symptoms, such as fever, coughing, troubled breathing, and/or other flu-like symptoms;

• Visit alone or with members of your household; • Stay local; visit parks that are closest to where you live; • If you arrive at a park and crowds are forming, please move to another area or return another time/day to visit; • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper arm/elbow.

IHSA makes it official—2020 spring state tournaments are canceled IHSA does allow for the chance of spring teams playing a contest this summer

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) declared last week its decision to cancel all of its spring state tournaments because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision by the IHSA, which oversees high school athletics in Illinois, ended the slim chance of truncated 2020 high school spring sports seasons in the state.

The IHSA Board of Directors met via a video conference call on April 21. During that meeting, the board announced its decision to cancel all of its spring state tournaments.

The cancellation came four days after Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announced that all K-12 schools in Illinois would be closed to on-site instruction for the rest of the current school year.

“We support the decision by Governor Pritzker and the Illinois State Board of Education, and given the logistics, we simply felt we could not conduct state tournaments that meet the expectations of our member schools this spring,” said IHSA Ex-

ecutive Director Craig Anderson in a statement announcing the IHSA’s April 21 decision. “As disappointing as it may be for students, it is the right decision for their health and safety, as well as for the health and safety of the general public, as we cope with this unprecedented pandemic.”

Glenbard East High School and Willowbrook High School both compete in nine spring sports—girls badminton, boys gymnastics, boys and girls track and field, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys volleyball, baseball and softball.

All of those teams had begun practicing for their spring seasons when Pritzker issued his March 13 order to close all K-12 schools in the state through March 30. Pritzker subsequently extended the closure through April 7, then through April 30. On April 17, he announced that all K-12 schools in the state would be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

Most of the area’s spring sports teams were a few days away from their first competition of the season when Pritzker issued the initial

March 13 order to close schools.

Glenbard East and Willowbrook’s spring teams held their final practices on March 12. All afterschool activities were canceled after regular classes on March 13.

None of the area’s high school spring teams are participating in any practices or competitions while school buildings are closed. The Illinois State Superintendent of Schools stated last month that no IHSA member school should organize any spring sports practices or games while the state’s high schools are closed.

The governor’s April 17 announcement that all of the state’s school buildings would be closed for the rest of the school year all but ended the hopes of salvaging high school spring sports seasons in 2020. In early April, the IHSA announced it was exploring the possibility of truncated spring seasons and extending state tournaments into late June. At the time of that announcement, the IHSA noted that if school buildings didn’t open for the rest of the school year, all spring sports would probably be canceled.

A spring without a season The Willowbrook girls soccer team was looking forward to the 2020 season, but the COVID-19 pandemic has kept the Warriors on the sidelines. The Willowbrook team had about two weeks of practice before Gov. JB Pritzker issued his March 13 order to close all K-12 schools in Illinois through March 30. The closures were then extended through April 7, and April 30. Pritzker recently ordered the closure to continue through the rest of the current school year. Last week, the IHSA announced that it was canceling all of its 2020 spring state tournaments. “It’s a shame,” said Willowbrook coach Julio Del Real of the lack of a typical season. “It’s breaking my heart.” The Warriors last practiced on March 12—five days before they were supposed to play their first match of the season.

The IHSA’s 2020 state badminton tournament was scheduled to take place May 15-16. The state tournament in boys gymnastics was also scheduled for May 15-16. The girls track and field state tournament was supposed to be held May 21-23, while the track and field state tournament for boys was scheduled for the following week—May 28-30. The state tournament in boys tennis was supposed to take place May 28-30.

The IHSA’s Class 2A and Class 3A state tournaments in girls soccer were supposed to be held June 5-6. The state tournament in boys volleyball was also scheduled for the weekend of June 5-6. The Class 3A and Class 4A state tournaments in both baseball and softball were supposed to take place the weekend of June 12-13.

Pritzker’s April 17 announcement that school buildings would be closed for the rest of the school year essentially eliminated the hopes for shortened spring seasons that included state tournaments and ended by the end of June.

The IHSA’s April 21 announcement canceling its spring tourna-

ments did refer to the possibility of opportunities for schools to “conduct some kind of spring athletic events” once state government and medical leaders announce that it would be safe to return to those events.

“The possibility of playing a spring sport game this summer is about closure,” said Anderson in last week’s statement from the IHSA. A spring athletic event—even one contest—may give athletic programs an opportunity to recognize their senior student-athletes.

“Our thoughts right now are with all the impacted students, coaches and communities,” Anderson added in last week’s statement. “Especially the seniors. It will be difficult for them to find a silver lining in all of this, but we stress that even if they don’t get the chance to compete again at the high school level, they are better for having been a part of their respective high school teams. By participating in high school sports and activities, they were exposed to life lessons in teamwork, leadership and overcoming adversity that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.”

This year’s team includes seven seniors, six of whom have been on the varsity since they were freshmen. Those four-year seniors are Erinn Bell (above left-No. 23), Sara Fitzgibbon (above middle-No. 31), Lizzy Florey, Emy Hayes, Julianna Paulsen (above right-No. 9) and Jenna Vittorio. Senior Alli Cameron was preparing to begin her third season on the varsity. “When I think of what they are missing, it hurts a lot,” Del Real added. “These girls deserved to experience their senior season.” In announcing the cancellation of its spring tournaments last week, the IHSA did mention the chance of spring teams playing a contest in the summer. “The possibility of playing a spring sport game this summer is about closure,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.

Julianna Krebasch signs to play volleyball in college

A few days before the quarantine, senior Julianna Krebasch decided to continue her volleyball career at Lake Erie College, a Division II NCAA school located in Painesville, Ohio.

Krebasch said she likes how the school has a long and rich history, which first began in 1856. Krebasch said she hopes to study business.

“Volleyball has helped me with confidence,” Krebasch said. “Coach Torres is a great coach who taught me so much about the game and then mentored me when all the college recruits showed up. I couldn’t have done this without her.”
