Food for students

District 88 has joined School District 45, Salt Creek School District 48 and Addison School District 4 to provide meals to students while school buildings are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers have distributed thousands of meals—free of charge—to all residents up to the age of 18. The distributions began on March 17. On Friday, March 27, the last day before spring break [March 30 to April 3], volunteers gave out six breakfasts and six lunches per child to last for the following six weekdays. The weekly bulk meal distribution will resume on Tuesday, April 7. From 10 a.m. to noon on April 7, participants will receive five days’ worth of breakfast and lunch meals. The meals will be distributed at multiple schools, in-

IDES taking steps to address unprecedented volume of unemployment claims Improved processes to help streamline increased need for benefits The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) has announced it is taking additional steps to address the unprecedented volume of unemployment benefit claims the department has fielded as a result of COVID-19.

To date, the department has taken several steps to improve the unemployment benefit claims process via the online portal and the call center.

• The website has been moved to new hardware infrastructure to handle the increased demand; • Web, storage and processing capacity has been increased to meet needs of increased traffic; • Methods have been implemented to track COVID-19-related claims; • Call center capacity has been increased; • Daily call center hours have been extended to respond to those waiting in the • Call center staff has been supplemented by 40 percent to cut down on wait times; • Both the website and the call center will continue to be monitored for improvements in functions and abilities.

Village board extends state of emergency in Villa Park

The Villa Park Village Board held a special meeting on Monday, March 23, to extend the village’s state of emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Villa Park Village President Albert Bulthuis initially declared a state of emergency in the village on March 16. That declaration lasted seven days, up until the day of the special meeting on March 23. Board members voted 7-0 at the March 23 meeting to extend the declaration until the next village board meeting, which is scheduled for April 13.

The ordinance approved by the village board last week authorizes Bulthuis to “exercise extraordinary power and authority, by executive order, during this state of disaster/ emergency to ensure that the effects of COVID-19 are mitigated and min-

staff members have been in continuous contact with their counterparts in neighboring communities. The village is also receiving regular updates from the DuPage County Health Department, the Illinois Department of Public Health and Gov. Pritzker’s office.

In the initial March 16 declaration of a state of emergency in the village, Bulthuis directed Village Manager Rich Keehner to close all village-owned buildings to the public, and to cancel all village board and commission meetings until the end of April. At the special meeting, however, Bulthuis said he was hopeful that the village board would be able to hold its board meeting that’s scheduled for April 13.

Keehner read a message, apparently from a village resident, during the March 23 meeting. The message stated that the village was already covered by the governor’s stay-athome order and questioned the purpose of the village’s state of emergency. The message also included a question asking when the powers granted by the village president’s declaration would expire.

Bulthuis stated that the environment is changing every day, and that the village’s emergency declaration would allow a potential purchase of goods or equipment that may be needed. The village, he said, may require emergency staffing, such as the need to bring someone in to sanitize village buildings.

The declaration also authorizes the village manager to implement alternative staffing protocols, procedures and shifts for the village’s police, fire and public works departments.

Bulthuis noted that the March 23 declaration would only be good until the next board meeting. If board members feel the emergency powers are being abused, any three of them could ask for a special board meeting.

That meeting would take place within 48 hours.

Village attorney Kathleen Field Orr noted that there are powers provided in the emergency declaration that Bulthuis chose not to take. She said the village president decided not to invoke the authority to spend over the village’s budget.

The Village of Villa Park announced last week that for the safety of Roy Strom employees and to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, Roy Strom—the village’s refuse collector—has implemented the following changes. The changes are effective immediately, until further notice.

• Roy Strom will only collect waste that is inside a collection con-

tainer or bagged and tied shut. Loose waste will not be collected.

• Bulk items that do not fit inside a container, such as loose construction material, couches, mattresses, etc., will not be collected.

• Recycling will only be collected inside a container with handles that can be lifted into the truck.

The village noted that yard-waste collection began as scheduled on

April 1. Stickers are required for yard-waste collection services.

Yard-waste stickers may be purchased through the village by paying online at invillapark.square.site/.

Orders will be filled through the mail. Yard-waste stickers are also available for purchase at Johnson’s Lighthouse, the Villa Park Jewel and other local stores listed on the village’s website—invillapark.com.

Federal REAL ID deadline extended to Oct. 1, 2021

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced on March 26 that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the federal REAL ID deadline an additional year to Oct. 1, 2021.

DHS cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact the virus is having on the general public and driver’s license and ID card-issuing agencies nationwide. Earlier this month, White, along with other state and business leaders from around the country, called on DHS to extend the REAL ID deadline.

Current Illinois driver’s licenses or ID cards will continue to be accepted at airports, military bases and secure federal facilities until Oct. 1, 2021.

Once Driver Services facilities reopen, White is suggesting that people who want a REAL ID wait until their current driver’s license or ID card is about to expire before visiting a facility to apply for a REAL ID. For those whose driver’s license or ID card expires after Oct. 1, 2021, and want a REAL ID, they can use their valid U.S. passport or other TSA-acceptable documents to fly

As a reminder, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, White closed all offices, including Driver Services facilities statewide to the public, through April 7, due to the health and safety recommendations by experts endorsing social distancing efforts to minimize transmission of the virus.

White is reminding residents that many transactions with the Secretary of State’s Office may be conducted online at www.cyberdriveillinois. com.

Some Secretary of State employees continue working to process these transactions as efficiently as possible.

I certainly understand why Pritzker has issued stay at home orders for the next couple of weeks, and why there’s social distancing right now. You obviously need to reduce the number of coronavirus cases so emergency rooms and hospital beds are not overwhelmed. I’m looking a few months down the road. What happens when this virus finally subsides, but then happens to return at some point? Are we going to shut down the country for weeks on end again? How about if a bad strain of the flu hits next winter? Again, are we going to shut down the country for two weeks or longer? *** It wasn’t that long ago that several members of the liberal media were whining about President Trump’s lack of formal press conferences. In the midst of the current crisis, Trump has been giving lengthy press conferences, which provide a lot of information. What is the liberal media’s response?

Trump needs to stop the press conferences! What a bunch of hypocrites these media leftists are. It’s pretty obvious what is happening.

Police warn residents to be on the lookout for scams taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic DuPage County coordinates donations The Villa Park Police Department cautions residents to watch out for scams by people trying to take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the types of scams you should be on the lookout for include: • Emails that appear to be from organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or the World Health Organization (WHO). Scammers have carefully crafted emails that appear to come from these sources, but they actually contain malicious phishing links or dangerous attachments.

• Emails that ask for charity donations for victims who have been affected by the pandemic. Scammers often create fake charity emails after natural disasters or health scares.

• Emails that claim to have a “new” or “updated” list of cases of COVID-19 in your area. These emails could contain dangerous links and information designed to scare you into clicking on the link.

Remain cautious, and always remember to protect yourself. Never click on links or download attachments from an email you weren’t suspecting.

If you want to make a charity donation, go to the charity website of your choice to submit your payment.

Type the charity’s web address in your browser instead of clicking on any links in emails or other messages.

The Villa Park Police Department also cautions residents to beware door-to-door surveyors regarding COVID-19. There is no one working with any government agency going door-to-door to obtain information.

Personal protective equipment needed in fight against COVID-19 DuPage County is accepting donations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to assist in the COVID-19 response.

Businesses, medical and nursing schools, and residents can donate unused Personal Protective Equipment at www.protectdupage.org and locate the donation link on the front page.

“I’m grateful to the many small business owners who closed to help protect public health,” Glowiak Hilton said. “They are sacrificing a lot right now, so we need to make sure that they have all the resources they need to stay afloat during these unprecedented and difficult times.”

Conroy asks neighbors to give back during Coronavirus outbreak State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is encouraging healthy residents to safely give back to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Down with daylight saving time

It happened again. We had to reset our clocks because of Daylight Saving Time (DST). I’m not sure if we are saving daylight now or if we were week before last. (I just checked. We are in the saving mode. Glad I figured that one out.)

Really though – and I’m trying not to sound cynical here – who cares?

We aren’t changing anything except our clocks when we change our clocks. We aren’t changing the number of hours in a day. We aren’t changing the sunrise or sunset. We aren’t changing how much work we can get done in 24 hours. We’ve been scammed.

It’s like a gigantic mind game played on hundreds of millions of people (over a billion if you count Europe, Canada and Australia) over and over, year after year, decade after decade.

Currently over 70 countries employ some type of DST. But it is controversial.

The concept of DST was originally created to save energy ­– first candle energy and later electricity. Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea in 1784 in a satirical essay. Satire.

Besides, things have changed since we used candles for our night time reading lamps. Current evening uses of energy involve TVs, computers and smart phones.

We don’t use less energy if it gets dark at 5:30 instead of 6:30 p.m.

We use about the same.

Changing the clocks twice a year is disruptive – and not just for the clocks. Adjusting our sleep schedules, even by just an hour, messes with our inner clock – or circadian rhythm – which can lead to physical, mental and behavioral distress. Your internal clock is probably more important than any external one. Yet we play tricks on it at least twice a year.

In addition, studies have shown that early evening darkness in the fall and winter months can lead to depression for some people.

When are we going to see what’s going on and get off this silly merry-go-round? It’s time for

someone to speak up. Here goes: I like eating dinner when it’s light outside. I don’t like early sunsets – and by early I mean before 5:00 pm. I like late summer nights when it doesn’t get dark until after 9:00 pm. I don’t mind a little extra darkness in the morning. I like Daylight Savings Time and I don’t want it to end.

Ever.

I suggest we abolish DST and make it the new normal. No need to go back no Non-Daylight Savings Time. Let’s keep the dial right where it is and keep it that way 24/7, 365 days a year.

We’ll never have to change our clocks again. We’ll never have to watch the sunset at 4:30 pm and eat dinner in the dark. We’ll nurture our circadian rhythms and be better people for it.

We may burn more candles – because they are scented, not for the light they provide. Life will be good. Come on people; let’s do this. Who’s with me?

Seven deaths in DuPage County related to COVID-19

According to the Daily Her-ald and Elmhurst Edward Hospital in Naperville, a DuPage County man has died from the COVID-19 virus.

The man, in his 60s, died Sunday at Edward Hospital in Naperville. Neither his identity, nor further details, were revealed. He had no underlying conditions.

Keith Hartenberger, a spokesman for Edward-Elmhurst Health System, told the Herald the man’s death was the third COVID-19 related death in the Edward-Elmhurst system.

County-wide, there have been 275 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and seven deaths as of Sunday, the DuPage County Health Depart-

ment noted in a press release. All seven deaths have occurred among patients older than 60.

Fifty-two (52) of the 275 cases were outbreak-associated, meaning the cases are linked to a congregate setting (long-term care facili-ties, workplaces, schools) or large gatherings (e.g., con-ventions and concerts), the Health

Department said in the release.

Approximately 233 were non-outbreak asso-ciated cases.

Of those 275 cases, 49 were reported at a long-term care facility in Willowbrook—33 residents and 16 staff, with four deaths.

“The number of COVID-19 cases and deaths being re-ported continues to rise, in part, due to

the increase in testing by commercial and hospital laboratories, as well as the spread of the virus in the community,” the news release stated.

There were 4,596 cases of coronavirus in Illinois as of Sunday, with 65 deaths. Among those deaths was an infant in Chicago who died over the weekend.

DuPage Foundation sets up COVID-19 Response Fund

The DuPage Foundation has created the COVID-19 Response Fund to receive contributions from those looking to support our community in this time of crisis and help fuel our local not-for-profits who will be impacted by and charged with responding to the repercussions of this emergency.

COVID-19 outbreak sparks flood of executive orders

Gov. JB Pritzker is on a pace to set a modern-day record for issuing the most executive orders by an Illinois governor.

Since 1999, which is as far back as the executive orders page of the governor’s website goes, the most executive orders any governor issued in a single year was 20. That mark was set by Gov. Pat Quinn in 2009. The average from 1999 through 2019 was 11.2 executive orders per year.

But in just the first three months of this year, Pritzker has already issued 12 executive orders, including 10 since he declared a public health disaster on March 9 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

Some of the orders Pritzker has issued deal with multiple, unrelated issues. On Tuesday, for example, he issued an order to expand the state’s health care workforce by suspending portions of a law requiring former or retired certified nursing assistants to undergo background and fingerprint checks in order to practice again and limiting them to just three months under a temporary license while the background checks are being completed.

Under the order they may now work for six months on a temporary license.

That same order, however, also contained a provision suspending a law requiring the Department of Juvenile Justice to give local prosecutors at least 30 days advance notice before releasing an offender from custody. And it contained another provision suspending a portion of the Coal Mining Act that requires the Miners’ Examining Board to conduct examinations at least once a month.

Some of the executive orders have made headlines, such as the one he issued Friday, March 20, the stay-athome order directing people essentially to shelter in place except for limited purposes, imposing social distancing rules and ordering certain non-essential businesses to close. That order also

contained a provision halting residential evictions throughout the state for as long as the disaster proclamation remains in effect.

The following Monday, March 23, he issued a follow-up order amending the March 20 order to clarify that people could leave their homes to work for or obtain human services provided

through the Department of Human Services, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services or Medicaid.

That order also suspended a law requiring the Illinois Department of Corrections to provide relevant local prosecutors with 14 days advance notice of an inmate being given early release.

On March 19, he issued an order

requiring health insurance companies to cover telehealth services. That order also allowed for the reinstatement of medical licenses for practitioners whose licenses have been lapsed or inactive for less than three years, as long as they meet certain conditions.

The first executive order Pritzker issued after the disaster proclamation

came on Thursday, March 12, when he extended the deadline for people to submit cannabis license applications for craft growers, infusers or transporters. That deadline was moved back to March 30 instead of March 16.

State, national unemployment spikes amid COVID-19 outbreak

More than 114,000 Illinoisans file new claims in one week

More than 114,000 workers in Illinois filed first-time unemployment claims in the week ending March 21 as the United States saw its biggest one-week spike in recorded history: 3.2 million workers filing for benefits.

The U.S. Department of Labor said the seasonally adjusted number was due entirely to the COVID-19 outbreak, which has forced bars and restaurants to close, halted public gatherings and severely restricted travel across the country. The department said economists typically expect to see a decline in new jobless claims during the third week of March.

The previous national record of 695,000 initial claims in one week was set in October 1982.

The total number of new claims in Illinois last week was 114,663, a 950-percent jump over the previous week and a 1,338-percent increase over the same week last year when there were only 7,933 new unemployment claims.

Total claims for the month of March in Illinois now stand at 133,763, nearly five times as high as the same point in March 2019 when it stood at 27,493.

According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security, new jobless claims were already beginning to climb before last week. There were 10,870 new claims in the week ending March 14, a 25-percent increase over the week before.

The sudden and historic spike last week followed two executive orders

by Gov. JB Pritzker severely restricting social and economic activity. On Sunday, March 15, he ordered all public and private K-12 schools to close. Then on Monday, March 16, he ordered bars and restaurants to close for consumption on their premises and banned public gatherings of 50 or more people.

On Friday, March 20, he issued a sweeping stay-at-home order banning virtually all public gatherings and directing people to keep a distance of six feet between themselves and anyone else while out of their homes. It took effect the following day.

Those actions were aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19 which, as of Thursday, had resulted in 2,538 confirmed cases of the disease in 37 counties in Illinois and had caused 26 deaths.

The school closures and stay-athome orders are currently scheduled to extend through April 7, but they could be extended depending on how widespread the virus still is at that point.

Dan Black, who teaches economics at the University of Chicago, called the current economic condition “unprecedented” and said in an interview that the ripple effects may be felt for a long time to come.

“I’ve seen people who are panicking and saying, ‘Oh, is it going to be a recession? This is going to be the next depression.’ I’ve seen other people

who kind of poo-poo the idea, but the truth is, we don’t know because we’ve never seen anything like this,” he said.

“You know, part of that is going to depend upon how long it’s necessary for us to keep the economy shut down,” he said. “Obviously, if you’re a business and you’re paying rent, if nothing else, and you’re not taking in any money, that tends to go through your cash reserves pretty quickly. And so the fear would be a lot of these businesses that are not operating right now might cease to exist or may go bankrupt, simply because they’ve run out of cash reserves.”

The Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago issued a report March 26 warning that the spike in unemployment could also hinder the housing market.

“Many unemployed mortgage borrowers will likely still find themselves with positive equity in their houses, depending on the course of house prices,” the report stated. “But the risk that they will remain unemployed for an indefinite period will undoubtedly limit their ability to borrow against that home equity. Moreover, mortgage originators are likely to focus their capacity instead on the large volume of still-employed borrowers seeking to benefit from the drop in long-term interest rates.”

Meanwhile, the Pritzker administration has already taken steps to extend unemployment benefits to those who are temporarily out of work due to the pandemic and has launched programs to extend low-interest loans and grants to small businesses affected by the disaster. He has also temporarily halted

all residential evictions in Illinois.

Also, the U.S. Senate passed a $2 trillion recovery package that would deliver direct financial aid to nearly all citizens as well as financial help for businesses and state and local governments.

But Black said there are many people, including small business owners, who won’t qualify for unemployment because they are not “employees” of someone else, and he said he wasn’t sure whether the measures being taken will be sufficient to meet the crisis.

“The problem is, you always have this disconnect between who’s having to pay the real price for these activities—which are saving a lot of lives, I’m certainly not going to say we shouldn’t be doing this,” he said. “But it’s going to place a burden on a set of people and, whether those people are going to be adequately compensated by the stimulus package. It’s very difficult to say.”

“I think people are rightfully concerned in the Senate about whether or not airlines will be able to survive this crisis,” he added. “Their revenues have disappeared largely and that’s going to be a big, big problem for them. But it’s also a problem for the small business owner who maybe runs a barber shop here in town and needs to be able to cut hair in order to feed himself and his family. How that individual is going to be helped by this stimulus package is kind of opaque at the moment.”

News of the unemployment spike came on the same day IDES issued its regular monthly jobs report for February, a report that would have been seen

as relatively good news for the state, absent the news about last week’s unemployment claims.

The state’s unemployment rate in February stood at a record low of 3.4 percent, one-tenth of a percentage point below January’s rate. The rolling three-month average number of jobs from December through February was up by 9,300 compared to the November-January average.

“This administration remains dedicated to providing relief to small businesses and families during this challenging period for the state economy,” Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes said in a statement. “As the state navigates this economic uncertainty, the governor will use every tool at the state’s disposal to help small businesses and families get the help they need.”

Meanwhile, many have reported issues with Illinois’ system for filing unemployment claims and Pritzker has noted the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology is working to make a new platform for such claims.

He said 17,000 people had filed claims successfully on March 26 alone as of 2 p.m. as the state tries to keep up with the unprecedented filings.

“Which is an amazing number considering that you know they’re literally building this airplane while it’s trying to take off,” Pritzker said at a daily COVID-19 news briefing in Chicago. “…We’re going to get this right, and we’re going to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to file for unemployment claims and we have sped up the process for people to actually receive those claims as well.”

Small businesses in Illinois that have suffered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for emergency low-interest, economic injury disaster loans of up to $2 million per business.

Small business owners can fill out an application online to attempt to secure a loan. The emergency loans provide funding directly from the United States Treasury.

The U.S. Congress recently passed the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act to provide the emergency federal loans.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offers disaster assistance in the form of low-interest loans to businesses in areas affected by declared disasters. Illinois recently received its statewide Economic Injury Declaration.

Rep. Sean Casten, who represents Illinois’ Sixth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, held webinars last week to provide information about the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

Robert Steiner, District Director for the SBA’s Illinois District Office, provided information throughout the March 25 webinar.

Steiner explained that through the program, businesses can receive loans of up to $2 million, with interest rates of 3.75 percent for small businesses and 2.75 percent for non-profits. The loans have terms of up to 30 years, and the first payment is deferred for one year.

The loans are based on businesses’ lost revenue, said Steiner, who noted that most businesses in the U.S. qualify as small businesses. A service business might have a maximum annual revenue of up to $7 million to be considered a small business, he said.

Businesses can use the loan funds for fixed debt, payroll, accounts payable—basically all of the bills that could have been paid had disaster caused by the pandemic not occurred, said Steiner. He added that the emergency loans are intended to keep businesses operating and keep their employees engaged and working.

The funds from the loans cannot be used for refinancing existing debt, Steiner stated. He said the loans can only be used to pay for the working capital shortfall that businesses are experiencing as a result of the pandemic.

Steiner explained that after a small business owner applies for the emergency loan, the SBA will examine the

owner’s credit history and the ability of the business to generate revenue to repay the loan.

There is no cost to apply for the loan, and small businesses are not obligated to take the loan if the SBA approves the application.

Steiner urged interested business owners to complete their applications as soon as possible. He described the loan reviews as a first-in, first-out process, so the sooner a business owner makes an application, the sooner he or she will learn of a decision and a potential disbursement of funds. Steiner said the time frame from an accepted application to a decision would take 21 to 24 days.

If an application is approved, it might take another seven days for disbursement of funds.

IHSA executive director provides update regarding high school spring sports Governing body considering option of extending spring season

Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Executive Director Craig Anderson sent an open letter to the state’s high school administrators and spring sports coaches last week.

Anderson said the IHSA—which oversees high school athletics in Illinois—is considering an extension of the spring sports season, which has been shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know this time continues to be a challenge for all of us,” said Ander-

son. “I hope this note finds you well.”

On March 12, the IHSA announced it was canceling its remaining winter state series post-season tournaments, including boys basketball. One day later, Gov. JB Pritzker ordered all K-12 public and private schools in Illinois to close until March 30. That school closure has since been extended to last through at least April 7.

None of the area’s high school spring teams are participating in any practices or competitions while schools are closed. The Illinois State Superintendent of Schools has stated that no IHSA member school should organize any spring sports practic-

es or games while the state’s high schools are closed.

“During the time of mandated closure, the IHSA does not believe it is necessary or prudent for any number of students to gather for workouts, regardless of how those students gather or whether any IHSA rule is broken by said gathering,” the IHSA noted in a statement on its website regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The area’s high school spring sports teams had begun practicing for their respective seasons before their school buildings closed on March 13.

Several high school spring sports are scheduled to hold their state series post-season competitions in May. Other sports, like boys volleyball, softball and baseball are scheduled to end in June. The IHSA Class 3A and 4A state championship games in softball and baseball are both scheduled for June 13.

“We will be working with our Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) to determine the need for an acclimatization period in advance of competition once school resumes,” stated Anderson. “No timeline has been set at this time.”

If regular classes and athletic

events do resume this spring, there is a chance the IHSA could reschedule its post-season competitions.

“We are considering an extension of the spring sports season limitation to provide more participation opportunities for students,” said Anderson.

“This may include movement of the post-season timelines and state series.”

Anderson closed his letter to administrators and coaches by promising to keep them abreast of the latest developments.

“We will continue to provide updates as new information is available,” said Anderson. “We appreciate your patience and understanding.”

The COVID-19 update on the IHSA website notes that athletic competitions may not necessarily resume when school buildings reopen to regular classes.

“It is important to remember this is an unprecedented situation and will remain fluid,” noted the update at ihsa.org.

“It is possible, for example, that schools may reopen at some point, but that other gatherings (like sports) may remain limited.”

Villa Park resident earns all-state recognition at Montini Catholic

Sophomore Tatiana Thomas (No. 22) of Montini Catholic High School in Lombard was recently named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Class 3A Girls All-State Second Team for the 2019-20 season. A Villa Park resident, Thomas helped the Broncos to a third-place finish in the IHSA Class 3A girls basketball tournament, which ended last month.

Montini defeated Springfield’s Lanphier High School 55-45 in the Class 3A third-place game, which took place at Redbird Arena in Normal on March 7. The Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 33-5. Thomas averaged 8.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game during the season. She converted nearly 62 percent of her shots from the field, connecting on 110 of 178 attempts. Sophomore Nathan Wemstrom of Villa Park is one of 13 members of Montini Catholic High School’s wrestling team to achieve Chicago Catholic League (CCL) All-Conference status for the 2019-20 season. Wemstrom helped the Broncos to the IHSA Class 3A dual team state championship—the program’s third straight team state title. Montini defeated Mount Carmel 37-9 in the championship dual in Bloomington on Feb. 29. The Broncos completed the season with a dual-meet record of 24-0. Wemstrom won the 195-pound title in the Class 3A individual regional at Willowbrook High School on Feb. 8. One week later, he earned a berth in the IHSA Class 3A individual state meet in Champaign with a fourth-place finish at the Conant Sectional in Hoffman Estates. Wemstrom won one of three matches at the individual state meet.

O’Connor is a member of the Renegades—a high school hockey team featuring players from Addison Trail, Fenton, Montini and Willowbrook. The Renegades played in the Illinois High School Hockey League Hayes-Suburban Division. They took home the coveted Cougar Cup Championship for the second straight season. Relay for Life event raises almost $90,000 About 500 students from Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School took part in the 10th annual Relay for Life of District 88 Youth fundraiser last month.

The students from the two District 88 schools spent the night of March 7 in Willowbrook’s field house during the fundraiser, which raised nearly $90,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Before the event, students formed fundraising teams.

A team of Willowbrook sophomores—It’s Po22ible— raised the third-most money of all the teams. The students from the Class of 2022 raised over $15,500. The Willowbrook sophomores on the It’s Po22ible team included (left to right) Amelia Gesicki and Madison Orlowski.
