Taking the plunge Several members of the Villa Park Police Department joined other area law enforcement officers to participate in Saturday afternoon’s 2020 Polar Plunge at the Oak Brook Bath and Tennis Club. Villa Park woman sentenced to 90 days periodic imprisonment for sexual abuse of two underage boys

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Villa Park woman accused of sexually abusing two young boys ages 14 and 16 has been sentenced to 90 days of periodic imprisonment in the DuPage County Jail.

Stefanie Litton, 37, appeared at a sentencing hearing where Judge Jeffrey MacKay handed down the sentence.

On Oct. 19, 2019, Litton entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Through her daughter, Litton met her victims at an underage drinking party she hosted at her home. In late 2018, the Villa Park Police Department received an anonymous tip that Litton was engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with underage boys.

Through their investigation authorities learned that Litton did have inappropriate sexual contact with an underage boy and that the abuse occurred on multiple occasions beginning in December 2017 through approximately February 2018.

Authorities also learned that the sexual abuse took place on multiple occasions in Litton’s vehicle. Litton was arrested on Dec. 4, 2018, and bond was set the following day at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Litton posted the necessary 10 percent, or $10,000 that same day and was released from custody.

“Stefanie Litton took advantage of a young boy less than half her age just to satisfy her sexual desires,” Berlin said. “Thanks to the efforts of the Villa Park Police Department, however, her disgusting behavior was uncovered and she will now spend

the rest of her life as a registered sex offender. I would like to thank the Villa Park Police Department for their work on this case. I would like to thank the DuPage County Children’s Center, particularly Investigators Vince Liberio and Cathy Hundley for their efforts. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Mike Fisher and Jessica Sisler for their work in holding Stefanie Litton responsible for her actions.”

Litton was also ordered to serve 36 months sex offender probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

Village board approves five-year renewal with RedSpeed to keep red-light cameras in Villa Park STAFF REPORT

The Villa Park Village Board voted 7-0 during its Feb. 24 meeting to renew the village’s contract with RedSpeed Illinois, LLC, to keep redlight photo cameras in the village.

The renewal calls for the agreement to last another five years, until 2025.

The village’s previous agreement with RedSpeed expired this February.

Villa Park began using red-light cameras in 2009. The cameras monitor southbound and eastbound traffic at Route 83 and Riverside Drive, near the entrance to the Walmart store at 900 S. Route 83. The village’s other red-light cameras monitor the westbound approach from Roosevelt Road, turning north onto Summit Avenue, and the eastbound approach from North Avenue, turning south onto Villa Avenue.

The cameras at the three different locations in Villa Park were installed 11 years ago, in February and March of 2009.

The red-light cameras reportedly record two types of violations—right turns on red without coming to a complete stop, and entering an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red.

lation is $100. The Village of Villa Park collects about 34 percent of the revenue from the fines, while RedSpeed collects about 30 percent. The remaining amount of about 35 percent is submitted to collections, with all of the money due to Villa Park.

Once a fine goes to collections, the fine reportedly doubles to $200.

The average violation pay rate of Villa Park offenses is about 77 percent since 2009. In other words, for every violation issued, about 77 percent of those violations have been paid.

Potential violations are reviewed three times by RedSpeed employees before being submitted to the Villa Park Police Department for review.

A member of the police department then reviews the potential violation for final approval of a notice to be issued to the vehicle’s registered owner.

The average police approval rate in Villa Park is reportedly 55 percent over the last 10 years.

Information provided by RedSpeed and the village shows that there were slightly more than 11,000 violations issued in Villa Park in both 2015 and 2016. There were approximately 10,600 violations in both 2017 and 2018. There were 7,277 violations in 2019. The number of violations dropped last year because the cameras at Roosevelt and Summit and North and Villa were down for significant portions of the year.

The village reportedly received about $492,000 in revenue from redlight violations in 2016. The village received about $422,000 in 2017 and about $450,000 in 2018. With the two cameras down for part of 2019, the village’s revenue from red-light violations dropped to about $273,000

in 2019. All of Villa Park’s revenue from red-light violations goes to the village’s general fund.

Villa Park residents reportedly account for only about 7 percent of all violations issued, according to RedSpeed’s data. About 12 percent of the violations in Villa Park are related to vehicles whose registered owner lives in Chicago. Nearly 7 percent of the violations are connected to vehicles owned by Elmhurst residents, while about 6 percent of violations are tied to vehicles owned by Lombard residents. More than 50 percent of the violations in Villa Park are reportedly related to vehicles owned by residents of municipalities outside of the nearby area.

Funky Java hosts solo art exhibit

Villa Park’s Funky Java Coffee House, located at 40 S. Villa Ave., is hosting a solo art exhibit featuring the work of local artist Gregory Stall. The exhibit will be on display at the coffee house through the end of March. Stall is a member of the National Audubon Society. They just left. Now, I’d like to know, somebody told me the village claims they don’t fix that, it’s not their job. Well, what do we pay taxes for?

a three-year analysis of Illinois Department of Transportation crash data—from 2016 through 2018— found a 34 percent average decrease in accidents at the enforced intersections in Villa Park.

Villa Park Deputy Police Chief Bill Lyons delivered a brief presentation during the Feb. 24 village board meeting. Speaking before the board voted to renew the contract with RedSpeed, Lyons said the redlight cameras have helped police identify offenders in several crimes in Villa Park and surrounding communities.

“This has proven to be just worth its weight in gold with some of the investigations,” said Lyons, who noted that police are capable of securely signing in to view what’s captured on red-light cameras. Lyons said that police have the ability to obtain live access of what’s captured on the cameras, if necessary.

“I could stand up here all night and talk about what we get out of this,” added Lyons. “It just gives us a quicker resolution to a lot of crimes and a lot of incidents that happen.”

Greg Zito of RedSpeed also spoke to the board during the Feb. 24 meeting. A former member of the Illinois State Legislature (a Democrat from Melrose Park), Zito said he has been with RedSpeed since its inception in 2006. He said there is “a tsunami of legislation” being proposed to out-

law red-light cameras.

“Unfortunately, there have been some nasty, nasty vendors,” said Zito, who served in both the Illinois House and the Illinois Senate. “But they’ve all done illegal things that were already on the books to begin with.”

Zito told the board he would be going to Springfield to make sure the debate over red-light cameras receives a fair hearing in the state legislature.

“If it saves one life, then it’s worth it, in my opinion,” said Zito in referring to the presence of red-light cameras. Zito noted that RedSpeed has contracts with about 60 communities.

“They are deterrents,” said Zito of red-light cameras. “People realize that the cameras are there. It’s a cultural change. We’re trying to change driving behavior.”

Zito said that while RedSpeed’s cameras are capable of providing real-time video of an intersection, they are not monitoring every driver in the area.

“These cameras aren’t surveillance cameras,” said Zito. “They trigger when a red-light violation is committed. The violation is then captured. It’s reviewed three times by our shop before it’s ever sent to your police department. So before your police department even gets it, it’s been screened three times.”

Also, there are three representatives from Illinois who back the bill. *** This is Villa Park calling. After losing the popular vote by nearly 3 million, Trump won the Electoral College and the White House by only 77,000 votes spread over three states, or to put it another way, Trump won with fewer people than fit in many college football stadiums. Since then, these Republicans have gone to lose every election since. In 2018 they lost to the Democrats who had their biggest gains in the House since Watergate.

Since then they’ve lost governor races in Kentucky and Louisiana, both states won by Trump. Looking closer Democrats control the House and are almost even in the Senate.

When Trump took office Republicans had an over 15 percent advantage in seats. Now that’s down to 4 percent. All this losing was before before the House impeached him.

So when you look at the stats, you realize thank God Trump and Republicans are almost gone. Thank you.

Superintendent provides information regarding Coronavirus

District 88 Superintendent Scott Helton addressed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in last week’s District 88 Newsletter, which was released on Feb. 28.

“At District 88, the safety and well-being of students and staff is our No. 1 priority,” stated Helton.

“We continue to carefully monitor developments regarding COVID-19.

Given the global concerns about this disease, I would like to proactively share with you steps Addison Trail and Willowbrook high schools take to keep our campuses safe.”

Helton noted that the district is working with the DuPage Regional Office of Education, the DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to ensure the safest environment at the district’s buildings, including Willowbrook High School.

“At this time, the IDPH recommends schools continue with regularly scheduled classes and events,” stated Helton, who added that the

IDPH related that the health risk to the general public from COVID-19 remains low, not just in Illinois, but throughout the United States.

The superintendent stated the best way to protect against the virus is to follow the same precautions you would take to avoid getting sick in general, which include: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then throw the tissue away.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

As part of the district’s standard practice, its buildings and grounds staff members routinely check hand sanitizer dispensers in all classrooms, spray door handles and locks with disinfectant and use disinfecting wipes or soap and water to clean

student desks, common areas and cafeteria tables. Additionally, the district’s buildings and grounds staff disinfects all restrooms on a regular basis.

Helton added that as an extra measure of protection during the winter months, and given the concern about Coronavirus, the district is also using a disinfectant to fog classrooms.

Helton’s message in the recent District 88 newsletter noted that a group of District 88 students and staff members are scheduled to travel overseas during the upcoming spring break. He said the district is communicating with those families and the travel company regarding possible options.

“We will continue to closely monitor this situation and will keep you updated and informed of any changes,” said Helton at the end of his message. “Thank you for your support of District 88 and for you assistance in helping to keep our school community healthy.”

The Smartphone Dead: A series destined to be a hit like The Walking Dead The second half of Season 10 of The Walking Dead premiered Feb. 23 on AMC. I’m sure there are more than a few of you who eagerly counted down the days until the premier. Wish I could say I share your enthusiasm for The Walking Dead series, which I know is quite popular, but there’s only so many times I can watch zombies gorge on flesh or fall over like bowling pins after they get bludgeoned or shot.

What I’d really like to see is producers of The Walking Dead come up with a series that’s more family friendly and easier on the stomach— and certainly would have universal appeal.

How about: The Smartphone Dead.

Casting for The Smartphone Dead wouldn’t be difficult.

All any casting company would need to do is show up at food stores, restaurants, schools, Starbucks or malls, street corners or sidewalks.

They’d have their pick of smartphone zombies from all walks of life.

Indeed, the smartphone zombie apocalypse has arrived. Smartphone zombies, however, don’t resemble those motley ghouls you see on The Walking Dead. They look like you and me.

I used to think the demographic for smartphone zombies was limited to teens and millennials. Not anymore.

Many Gen Xers and Boomers have turned into smartphone zombies.

I live close to the Yorktown Mall, and regularly stop by for either a cheezborger (cheezborger, cheezborger) at The Billy Goat, or to indulge in some Dutch Chocolate frozen yogurt at Skinnysweet (which it quite tasty, but routinely gives me brain freezes).

Smartphone zombies are easy to spot there. When they’re not walking in a smartphone-induced trance, they usually sit alone, or in groups, with

their noses planted in their phones.

Occasionally, they’ll look up … or look up and pose for a selfie. (I’ve never understood the fascination of sticking one’s phone in front of one’s face and snapping a pic, but that’s just me.)

I’ve certainly passed up my share of smartphone zombies at the Yorktown Mall. The other day, I found myself on a collision course with a young fellow around my height, but who outweighed me by at least 50 pounds.

He kept walking—all the while, his eyes transfixed on his phone, oblivious that I was heading straight toward him.

Concluding this was a great opportunity to play a game of chicken with a smartphone zombie, I kept walking, too.

With two feet to spare, however, I blinked. I side-stepped him just in time to avoid a collision. He didn’t even look up.

Observing smartphone zombies at the mall amuses me, for the most part.

It’s dealing with them while driving that’s no laughing matter.

As a tot, I was taught to always look both ways before crossing the street.

However, this simple life lesson often goes by the wayside when someone is transfixed on a smartphone.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen smartphone zombies hold up motorists in front of Walmart, Jewel or Mariano’s … all the while walking at a snail’s pace because they’re texting (and, by gosh, the world has to stop for them).

One morning, I approached a four-way stop located a couple of

blocks from the Independent’s office in Elmhurst. A woman to my right, driving an SUV, had stopped just before me.

If I remember protocol from driver’s ed class, the driver who stops first gets to go first. So, I waited for her to go. And waited … and waited.

After a few seconds of waiting, curmudgeon-ness kicked in (it doesn’t take long when you reach my age) and I huffed my way through the intersection.

I gave her one of those “if looks could kill” glares as I drove past, but of course, she was unaware of my stare. She was too busy texting. (The next morning, I approached the same four-way stop, convinced I’d find the same woman sitting there texting 24 hours later.)

How I wish one of our men or women in blue happened to be at the intersection that morning instead of me. He or she could have written up an easy citation.

Speaking of citations, for all of the bumbling that goes on in Springfield, at least state lawmakers are on the right track with regard to cracking down on those who insist on pecking away on their screens or indulging in the latest gossip while driving.

According to a law that went into effect last year, drivers who are caught using a hand-held electronic device receive a moving violation (not a warning), as well as a fine.

The fine is a maximum of $75 for the first offense, $100 for the second, $125 for the third and $150 for all future offenses.

Personally, I don’t think the fines go far enough. I’d recommend $300 for the first offense, $400 for the second, $500 for the third and $1,000 (or just less than the cost of a new iPhone 11 Pro) for all future offenses.

Food for thought as I await Season 1 of The Smartphone Dead.

Rep. Mazzochi: fixing pension problems necessity, not a fantasy Responding to Governor Pritzker’s Budget Address, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) sharply rebuked the Governor’s insistence that reform to help manage Illinois’ ever-growing pensions is a “fantasy.”

“Candidate Pritzker promised to increase pension funding, including with marijuana and gambling revenues.

Governor Pritzker failed on both. He wanted a pension holiday last year, but we and others fought to make his budget keep at least the minimum payment promise,” Mazzochi said. “The legislature also gave the Governor his cannabis and gambling revenues, but he has already diverted them to other new

spending, and his latest budget proposal continues this bad habit.”

Illinois’ current pension liability estimates range between $137-$236 billion. In FY 2020, Illinois contributed $9.2 billion to the state’s five pension funds; and only $7.6 billion for K-12 education. Mazzochi warned, “a quarter of Illinois’ current budget is pension contributions, and will consume an even bigger percentage each year.”

The Governor derided structural pension debt reform efforts as “wishful thinking.”

“The Governor has two options to avoid structural collapse: a large infusion of new funds into the pension

system, to ease the state’s annual burden over time; or implement structural reform,” Mazzochi said in response.

“Otherwise, we squeeze out the government’s core functions our residents rely on, from education to social services, public safety, and health care.

We literally cannot afford to dismiss pension reform so cavalierly.”

Mazzochi’s proposed constitutional amendment, HJRCA 38, relies on the 2013 comprehensive, bipartisan pension reform that passed the Illinois General Assembly, but which the Illinois Supreme Court rejected under the Illinois Constitution’s ‘ironclad’ pension protection clause.

Mazzochi reiterated that her Amendment “does not change the benefits accrued and payable as of the date of the Amendment.”

“It simply says that the General Assembly is not agreeing that a contract entered on day 1 locks every benefit in stone for life.”

The Governor also sought to avoid any structural reform by calling any proposal a federal Contract Clause violation. Mazzochi called that a cop out.

“Federal cases recognize that when the lack of funds jeopardizes public health and safety, the state must be allowed to prioritize the overall public welfare,” she said. “The Governor

simply doesn’t want to use his significant political weight to make a hard choice that ensures our state can serve our residents’ public health, safety and education needs.”

The Governor’s address proposed a third option: tax increases. Mazzochi observed that “even assuming the best of the Governor’s own projections under his new tax system, he would generate $3.4 billion, but direct a mere $100 million extra to the state’s pension systems. His real fantasy is thinking that this will solve the problem.”

Seven female Wheaton North students charged in school brawl DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police Bill Murphy announced last week that seven juvenile female Wheaton North High School students are all facing Mob Action (Class 4 Felony) charges following a premeditated brawl that erupted at the high school on Wednesday, Feb. 26. In addition, three of the girls are facing one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony) and one is facing one count of Aggravated Battery of a Teacher (Class 3 Felony).

Each of the girls appeared at a detention hearing this morning where Judge Anthony Coco released each of the girls to the custody of their parents. Judge Coco also ordered that each girl be fitted with a GPS monitoring device.

It is alleged that on Feb. 25, 2020, at approximately 7 a.m., all the girls were in a hallway near the cafeteria when the fight broke out. It is alleged that one of the girls had armed her-

self with a pocketknife while two of the girls had armed themselves with items that could be used as a weapon including a sock filled with batteries and a sock containing a can of green beans. Authorities at the school attempted to break up the fight and were joined by police officers from the Wheaton, Glen Ellyn and Carol Stream Police Departments as well as DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputies in their efforts.

“The alleged actions against the students in this incident will absolutely not be tolerated,” Berlin said. “School safety continues to be a top priority of my administration and any incident that disrupts school safety or the ability of teachers to teach and student to learn will be met with serious consequences.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

Confessions of a super seasoned parent

When it comes to parenting, I’ve been around the block a time or two. Heck, I’ve practically worn out the course.

My husband and I have even transitioned to the next generation of parenting, which is so great it can be described as “grand.”

Our daughter and son-in-law are parents themselves and are embracing parenthood as only first-timers can.

We’ve all been there. The dichotomy between parenting a first child and second-born is substantial. With children further down the line, the phenomenon is exponentiated.

We are currently finishing up with our fourth. To say he lives in a different world than his 10-year-older sister did is an understatement. With her, I used to try to be a super parent. It was tough going. There were so many details and important things to attend to. Like matching socks.

I remember when my daughter

not to set myself up as a perfect parent. I’ve learned perfection is constricting. I’ve learned to be honest – mostly with myself, because that brings a peace that perfection and competition can’t touch.

Here’s one honesty: Every Friday I get a notification from the school telling me I can take a peek at which assignments my kid is missing. I hardly ever click on the link. I’m seasoned and tired. I don’t want to spend the weekend harping on him to get things done. It’s his job, not mine.

Making it mine is a disservice to both him and me.

If my kid falls behind or is struggling I contact the teacher – usually through email because I believe that is what is most convenient for already-too-busy teachers. But I no longer hover over his work thinking that hovering makes me a better parent, or makes me look better as a parent. Pretending is just too much

work. It isn’t worth it.

I am a seasoned and imperfect parent. I’ve never been a perfect parent, although for years I tried to wear that mask. But masks can be exhausting and suffocating.

When kids are young, they need our help with things like shin guards, reading homework and the golden rule. They don’t ever stop needing our help or us, not really. But to set ourselves up for perfection – to attempt to be the ultimate public Facebook persona is just plain wrong – for them and for us. And that is my parenting truth for today.

Tomorrow may be different, because I’m still learning.

Parenting is like that.

Glen Ellyn man found guilty in 2011 murder of ex-wife

discovered Bustos’ lifeless body in the bathroom. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death. An investigation into the murder led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department led authorities to Granados as the killer.

The investigation revealed that at some point in time during the evening of October 15, Granados and Bustos were in the apartment together when an altercation ensued between the two resulting in the sexual assault and murder of Bustos. After strangling Bustos to death, Granados fled the country for Mexico, where he remained until his extradition in the fall of 2017. On September 17, 2017, Granados appeared in Bond Court where Judge Brian Telander ordered he be held without bond. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

“This afternoon, a jury properly found that Juan Granados is the man responsible for the senseless murder of Nancy Bustos,” Berlin said. “Their verdict however, will not bring Nan-

cy back to her children, her family and the countless others who loved her. Their loss will be with them forever.”

With the economy doing well, differences in state tax rates can save thousands of dollars for working families, and millions for the wealthy.

On Tuesday, Feb. 25, SeniorLiving.org released its study, Highest and Lowest Tax Rates in America, using the most recent data from the Tax Foundation, U.S. Census Bu-

reau, Zillow, AAA and the American Petroleum Institute through 2019.

The rankings were determined by measuring income tax, sales tax, property tax and gas tax in each state.

The five states paying the highest tax rate includes California, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Kansas. The five states paying the lowest tax rate includes Alaska, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware and Wyoming.

Here are key findings in Illinois: • No. 46 - overall combined tax rate, 6.85% • No. 33 - income tax rate, 4.95% • No. 50 - effective property tax

rate, 2.38% • No. 45 - effective sales tax rate, 8.74% • No. 50 - effective gas tax rate, 20.04% Here are additional key national findings: • There is a 7% disparity between the state with the lowest combined median tax rate (Alaska) and the state with the highest (California).

• Seven states have no income tax (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming), while four others have no effective state sales tax (New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware and Oregon).

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a jury has found Juan M. Granados, 42, formerly of Glen Ellyn, guilty of killing his ex-wife, Nancy Bustos in the fall of 2011. In addition to the finding of guilty of First-Degree Murder, the jury also found Granados guilty of Criminal Sexual Assault.

The jury reached their verdict after approximately three hours of deliberations following a seven-day-long trial.

Warriors close regular season with a loss to Lyons Township Willowbrook begins post-season on its own court this week

The Willowbrook boys basketball team completed its regular season with last week’s 78-62 home loss to Lyons Township in Villa Park.

The Feb. 25 contest was a crossover game between the fifth-place teams in the West Suburban Gold and West Suburban Silver Confer-

ences. The Warriors wound up fifth in the West Suburban Gold standings with a conference record of 4-8.

Willowbrook finished the regular season with an overall record of 1219.

“Everybody’s 0-0 now,” said Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins, who

was looking ahead to the playoffs a few minutes after the regular-season finale against the Lions. “The season is contingent on next week, how we come out and perform. I’m excited to see what we look like.”

The Warriors opened the IHSA Class 4A post-season on their home

court earlier this week. Willowbrook, which is hosting a regional, began the playoffs with this week’s home game against West Chicago. A win over West Chicago would allow the Warriors to play Glenbard East in this week’s regional semifinal.

The winner of the potential Willowbrook-Glenbard East matchup would play in this Friday’s regional final against either Batavia or Glenbard West.

The Warriors’ regular-season finale against Lyons Township was tight through most of the game. The visiting Lions held a 38-35 lead at halftime. Willowbrook senior Isaac Gaines scored a basket to break a 44-44 tie in the middle of the third quarter. Senior Sam Tumilty added a 3-point shot to push the Warriors’ lead to 49-44 with less than three

minutes left in the period.

Lyons Township closed the third quarter with a 16-2 run to take a 6051 lead with eight minutes to play.

The Warriors delivered a 6-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter to cut Lyons Township’s lead to 60-57.

Senior Everett Stubblefield’s driving basket completed the 6-0 run, which trimmed the Lions’ lead to three points with about 5:40 to play.

Lyons Township reeled off 13 straight points over the next few minutes to build a 73-57 advantage.

Senior Deandre Holliday and sophomore Sean Paige both scored 12 points for the Warriors. In addition to scoring 12 points, Paige grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds. Stubblefield added 11 points, while Tumilty supplied nine points by making three of four attempts from 3-point range.

The Warriors opened the IHSA Class 4A playoffs with a regional quarterfinal game against West Chicago. A win over West Chicago would set up a meeting against Glenbard East in a regional semifinal. Batavia and Glenbard West squared off in the regional’s other semifinal game in Villa Park. The regional final takes place this Friday.

The Addison Trail boys basketball team had a chance to give formal recognition to four seniors who have been a big part of the program over the past four years.

The Blazers honored seniors AJ Carlson, Alex Conrad, Jacub Trippiedi and Gonzalo Reyes on senior night at home against Hinsdale South.

“Those four were part of the smallest freshmen class we have had in quite some time,” Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons said. “We had 20 kids try out for basketball from that freshmen class.

Those four spent time improving their games and are definitely worthy of the recognition they received. That’s the nice thing about senior night, you get to say goodbye to a group of kids that has improved over four years. This group is no different.”

Lyons liked how his team competed against Hinsdale South.

“We played really well against them,” he said. “They won our league and clinched the league that night against us. They were something like 27-4. We hung with them until the last two minutes and then we had to start fouling and the game got away from us.”

cision to Morton in WSC Gold and then lost 76-71 in overtime to Proviso West as part of the West Suburban Conference crossover series.

“It was kind of the same story,” said Lyons of the Proviso West game.

“We turned it over way too much. We had 26 turnovers in that game. They got a lot of easy baskets off that and it created a tempo that was not in our favor. We couldn’t get a stop when we needed one.”

Carlson continued his torrid scoring ways with 29 points. Robert Roszkiewicz added 18 points.

“That’s been pretty much par for the course for us in terms of who has been leading us in scoring,” Lyons said.

Sophomore Jacob Daniels, Lyons noted, hit a couple of big 3-point shots against Proviso West. Conrad added eight points.

“We are getting some more contributions from different guys, which is good to see,” Lyons said. “But a lot of the teams we play and will continue to play, we have a small margin for error.”

Addison Trail finished the season with a 5-25 overall mark and ended 1-11 in WSC Gold play.

The Blazers opened the Class 4A postseason earlier this week against Glenbard North in the Class 4A Lake Park regional. If Addison Trail wins that game, it would advance to a matchup against No. 1 seed Lake Park. Addison Trail is the No. 17 seed in its own regional, while Glenbard North is the No. 16 seed.

“The kids keep competing even though our record isn’t where we want it to be,” said Lyons.

Women of Bethel host annual Spring Tea Jenny Riddle to perform Sally Field’s memoir

On Saturday, April 25 at 12:30 p.m. the Women of Bethel United Church of Christ, will hold their 22nd annual Spring Tea in the church’s Welcome Center, located at 315 E. St. Charles Road.

The event features a full-tea menu in an elegant setting followed by dramatic book reviewer Jenny Riddle’s one-woman show, Sally Field’s memoir, “In Pieces.” In her presentations, Jenny motivates, educates, and entertains audiences with her unique interpretations of best-selling books in which she becomes the characters telling their real-life stories. For more than fifteen years, Jenny has been delighting audiences with her captivating style of storytelling. At the end of each review, she also shares her current “favorite reads.”
