DuPage Community Transformation Partnership releases grant guidelines

Guidelines include eligibility, application deadlines

The DuPage Community Transformation Partnership (Partnership) released guidelines for its inaugural grant program. The Partnership’s goal is to support programs focused on eliminating food insecurity, promoting housing stability, and providing effective mental health and substance use disorder prevention or treatment programs for DuPage County residents. Guidelines are available at dupagefoundation.org/ DCTP. The Partnership designed two grant categories to address immediate and long-term needs in the com-

munity in response to the COVID-19 health emergency.

• Immediate Intervention grants are intended to provide financial resources to enable organizations to respond to the immediate needs of their clients and/or to quickly increase capacity of the organization to deliver efficient services. These grants will be distributed annually in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

• Transformational grants are intended to support evidence-based programs focused on long-term solutions to build capacity, improve efficiency and ensure efficacy of pro-

grams that support DuPage County residents. The overall objective is to eliminate food insecurity, promote housing stability, and provide effective mental health and substance use disorder treatment or prevention programs. Relative to the scope of the program and the financial needs, applicants may apply for a one-year or two-year grant. A second Transformational grant opportunity will be offered in 2024.

Pritzker announces initiative to improve children’s behavioral health services Six state agencies to work together to determine improvements

Gov. JB Pritzker announced the launch of an initiative to improve behavioral and mental health services for children.

The Children’s Behavioral Health Transformation Initiative will help build a coordinated response between six state agencies in an effort to support children with behavioral health needs while increasing transparency in the process.

At the governor’s direction, the departments of Human Services, Children and Family Services, Public Health, Healthcare and Family Services, Juvenile Justice and State Board of Education are to take part in a working group aimed at bettering support for children in need of behavioral health services.

Dr. Dana Weiner, Chapin Hall child welfare expert at the University of Chicago, will serve as the director of the initiative. Weiner will work alongside members of the Pritzker administration to develop a blueprint by the end of the year for overhauling the state’s response to children’s behavioral and mental health needs.

“Our current system is difficult to navigate and does not provide families with consistent, transparent solutions to the challenges they face,” Weiner said.

“This uncertainty can threaten the health development of children and the integrity and stability of families.”

Michelle Trager, a mother of four, told the story of how her oldest son, who is now 16 years old and lives in a residential facility in another state, has been in and out of the juvenile justice system due to significant health struggles.

Trager said they adopted him when he was 14 months old and as he aged he increasingly struggled with emotional and behavioral problems that impacted his everyday life. For more than a decade, Trager sought interventions and recommendations from professionals to help her son.

But she said it came to a point when her son’s behavior was disruptive and dangerous to himself and those around him. A compre-

hensive evaluation was performed that revealed the likelihood of her son having prenatal alcohol exposure with a background of early childhood trauma.

By the time Trager was advised and required by the school district to seek residential treatment, none of the limited number of facilities would or could accept him. Trager said at age 14, her son spent 331 days in county detention and continually harmed himself, resulting in multiple trips to the emergency room.

“Out of 10 (visits), only once was the hospital able to secure admission to an inpatient psychiatric unit which sent him back to detention after two weeks of ineffective treatment,” Trager said.

Her son was eventually moved to the Department of Juvenile Justice where they realized he needed treatment and not incarceration.

Due to her son meeting his time limit at the DJJ, he was discharged even though he was not deemed safe to return home.

With no Illinois State Police-approved facilities available for help, Trager said they had to find a residential placement out-of-state but had to go through due process in court to send him to an out-of-state facility.

The six state agencies are to work through a step-by-step process that examines and reviews if children and their families have access to behavioral health services in their community, schools or through residential programs.

Agencies will review the allocation of resources to meet needs within existing programs, eligibility requirements for different levels of care, barriers to interagency coordination and the best practices from other child-serving systems across the country.

Bobby noted that problems regarding the state’s behavioral health response date back more than a decade, but the pandemic

has made it “incomprehensible to a point where families are just at their wits’ end.”

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that children’s mental-health related emergency visits increased from March to October 2020. In Illinois, more than 100,000 students with disabilities receive social, psychological or counseling services.

In the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2023, DHS would receive $50 million from federal funds for programs that address trauma, mental and behavioral health.

DHS and the other five state agencies would partner with community-based organizations to establish and support the new federal 988 crisis line and response services for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

Pathways to Success Program for children with serious mental illnesses.

Pathways to Success is a program through DHS for Medicaid-enrolled children under the age of 21 who have behavioral and mental health needs.

The program provides access to

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Villa Park Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to remind motorists to “Drop It and Drive.”

“Texting while driving puts everyone on the road at risk by distracting a driver visually, manually and cognitively,” said Villa Park Police Sgt. James Cihak. “During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re working to increase awareness of these dangers and encourage all motorists to give driving their full attention.”

At a time when traffic fatalities are on the rise in Illinois and across the country, the Villa Park Police Department is committed to reducing the traffic crashes caused by distractions like texting or talking on a cell phone.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones during the entire month of April. Villa Park Police will be ticketing drivers who text or use their cell phones while driving.

The distracted driving campaign is administered by IDOT with federal traffic safety funds.

Michigan State University’s Model United Nations Conference

From March 18-20, eight Willowbrook High School students competed in Michigan State University’s Model United Nations (MSUMUN) Conference. Students also competed in Specialized Committees and Crisis Committees, representing a Chicago alderman in the 1920s, a Roman general during a war with Germanic tribes and a religious leader at the Jamestown Colony. Willowbrook earned several awards at the conference, including the Best Delegation (first place) honor in the small group category. Meanwhile, competition has become much fiercer today, as many department stores, online retailers and even specific brand names have all entered the arena. The transition of the workplace to more casual attire and the recent work-from-home trend have also influenced customer demands.

The decision to close the store doesn’t mean Kraus is headed for the easy chair any time soon. In the 1990s, he responded to another consumer need by starting a sock company to serve larger-than-average men.

After considerable research, Kraus developed patented machinery that makes wider socks, and launched the Extra Wide Sock Co., in 1996. He will continue to devote time to that business.

Willowbrook’s boys volleyball team began its 2022 season with a pair of road matches last week. The Warriors lost 25-8, 25-12 to Glenbard East in Lombard on March 22. Two days later, Willowbrook faced Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn. After losing the first game, the Warriors won the second game to even the match. The decisive third game was a tight battle. Lawmakers direct $2.7 billion in federal funds toward $4.5 billion unemployment deficit Pritzker says he’ll sign it as negotiations continue on addressing remaining debt

Illinois lawmakers last week advanced a measure to allocate $2.7 billion in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay down more than half of the state’s outstanding $4.5 billion Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund debt.

The measure, an amendment to Senate Bill 2803, also included over $1.4 billion in general revenue fund spending to pay down other state debts.

Debate lasted nearly an hour in the House March 23 as the bill passed 68-43 with only Democratic support.

The Senate passed it Thursday on a 39-16 vote, also with only Democratic support.

Gov. JB Pritzker said at a news conference March 24 that he will sign the bill as soon as it hits his desk.

“Every Republican voted against paying down our state’s debts,” Pritzker said at the news conference in his office. “Clearly, they’ve decided that because it’s an election year, they’re willing to put politics ahead of the people of Illinois. It drives me crazy to see that it drives them crazy to acknowledge the Democrats have done what their party hasn’t done – pay down debt and balance the budget while giving people real tax relief.”

Republicans, meanwhile, said that not allocating greater funding to the trust fund deficit will force some combination of tax increases on employers or benefit cuts to those on unemployment as a solution to paying down the remaining $1.8 billion in trust fund debt.

Negotiations continue The trust fund is the pool of money paid into by businesses that funds unemployment claims. The debt accrued as the state borrowed from the federal government at the height of the pandemic to keep the trust fund solvent amid an unprecedented crush of claims.

When states accrue trust fund debt, the ways to pay it down have historically included raising insurance premium rates paid by employers, decreasing unemployment benefits, or seeing a new influx of cash, such as federal, state or private funds.

Democrat who is a lead House negotiator on unemployment issues, said discussions continue with business and labor interests on addressing the remaining $1.8 billion. But at least $2.5 billion was needed to keep those negotiations moving forward.

“This is an agreed bill process.

Business and labor have to agree or we’re not going to move the bill,” he said of ongoing negotiations to pay down the $1.8 billion. “This was a budgetary measure in order to make it easier on the agreed bill process.”

Hoffman said in 2011 after the Great Recession, the state went to the private bond market to pay down a $2.3 billion trust fund deficit and dedicated a revenue stream from increased employer premiums to pay it down. On March 24, Hoffman said employers “took the entire responsibility to pay off the bonds” in 2011 and there were no benefit decreases.

In a July email to Capitol News Illinois, Illinois Retail Merchants Association president and CEO Rob Karr—a negotiator on behalf of business in 2011 and currently – said the only concession from labor at the time was agreeing to a slight decrease to the dependent child allowance for unemployed individuals.

IRMA is part of a group called the Joint Employers, which also includes the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Businesses of Illinois, and the Associated General Contractors of Illinois.

They issued a statement regarding the ongoing negotiations.

“This vote will inject $2.7 billion from the American Rescue Plan (ARPA) into the Illinois Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund,” they said in the statement. “Illinois employers appreciate the governor and members of the General Assembly for taking this positive step in addressing the massive $4.5 billion in outstanding debt. We’re hopeful that negotiations will continue to resolve the remaining balance of this unprecedented deficit.”

Private bonding is a path being considered again this time around.

The state needed to act by April 1 to keep all options – including increas-

ing premiums, lowering benefits or bonding—on the table moving forward, according to House Majority Leader Greg Harris, a Chicago Democrat who sponsored the bill. Hoffman said he is hopeful the parties will agree by the April 8 adjournment date.

The governor’s office held closeddoor meetings throughout the day on March 23 to discuss the debt retirement proposal. A late amendment increased the previously planned allocation to the trust fund from $2 billion to the $2.7 billion sum.

After the governor’s March 24 news conference, the parties returned to negotiations.

Partisan disagreement Democrats said the $2.7 billion will come from an unallocated ARPA fund balance that sits at about $3.5 billion. Illinois received $8.1 billion directly from the ARPA stimulus plan signed by President Joe Biden last year.

But Republicans urged full repayment of the $4.5 billion, noting that about $6.9 billion in ARPA funds remains unspent, even if more than that has been promised in previous spending plans that passed the General Assembly.

Before the pandemic, the state had $1.2 billion in its trust fund, Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, said in a floor speech on March 23. Republicans urged the state to use ARPA funds to replenish that amount as well.

“So you might ask what happens when our unemployment insurance trust fund is in debt?” Demmer said.

“Two things: One, a major tax increase on every job in the state of Illinois; and two, a benefit reduction for every worker in the state of Illinois. It’s a lose-lose scenario. Taxes go up; benefits go down because the fund is in debt.”

Republicans urged reallocating other ARPA funds, particularly a $1 billion sum allocated last year to capital projects, to pay down the entire debt to stave off the negative consequences for employers and workers.

Illinois doesn’t know where it’s going

By Jim Nowlan I spoke recently to an audience of attorneys and financial planners about the future of Illinois. I asked for a show of hands as to who thought our state would reverse the almost 1 percent decline in population we experienced in the past decade.

Only 1 of 30 thought it was likely.

Why, I asked: high taxes; climate; business climate; corruption, and lack of state pride were responses from this highly educated group.

Yes, I agreed, Illinois has obvious shortcomings, yet the state has incredible strengths as well, which would make Illinois an economic powerhouse otherwise.

And the problems are fixable, though politically daunting.

Now let’s look at the positive side of the ledger, which is strikingly bright, in ways I rarely hear trumpeted. Former state commerce director Jim Schultz of Effingham sums it up succinctly: In each of the five critical Rs— roads, rails, runways, rivers and routers—Illinois is among the top three states in the nation.

I called Jim and told him he should add a six R: research.

A recent ranking of graduate research universities found the universities of Chicago, Northwestern and Illinois to be among the top 20 in the world—3 of 20, not just in the nation, but in the world.

I could go through each of the Rs in detail, but space limits me: Yet, look at a highway map of the U.S. See the density of interstate highways crisscrossing Illinois— thicker than for just about any state. We have more miles, 2,200, of interstate highways than any states in the nation other than California and Texas. And, our state is located smack dab in the middle of the world’s largest market.

Our strengths would be the envy of most other states, if I weren’t for our weaknesses. Yet, the weaknesses can be addressed.

Other states have done so.

I contend the biggest problem for Illinois is that the state doesn’t know where it is going. That is, there is no roadmap to where we want the state to be in 10 years, and of what it would take to get us there.

I continue to be confounded that the state has never—never— done any long-term thinking.

The closest we have is the 6,000 disparate bills introduced into the legislature every two years. Crazy.

The singular piece of forward thinking in Illinois history was the Burnham Plan for Chicago of the early 1900s, led by the architect Daniel Burnham and commissioned by the Commercial Club of Chicago. The effort followed on the heels of the stupendous Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, visited by 27 million folks from around the world.

So, the City of Big Shoulders, as Sandburg described the city, knew it could do big things.

After much work, the plan was presented to the City Council, which also labored over the plan, ultimately adopting about half the recommendations. But what marvelous results: A magnificent lakefront reserved, not for private property owners, but for the public. Wide boulevards and a spectacular park system, and more. Chicagoans and visitors have benefited every day since its adoption in 1909.

Texans think big. Their business leadership has been developing a Texas 2036 plan, for where they want Texas to be on the 200th anniversary of their nationhood.

They have a Can-Do attitude.

Illinoisans are so down in the mouth about our future that we have a Can’t-Do frame of mind. There are, people think, too many political and interest group obstacles in our way. Elon Musk would be appalled at such thinking.

The business leadership of the 19th Century, such as Marshall Field, Potter Palmer, Bertha Honore Palmer, Julius Rosenwald (who built Sears), focused on the city they loved and built.

Chicago’s bigtime CEOs today at such behemoths as McDonald’s, Boeing, CAT, United Airlines are up their eyeballs in alligators heading global companies; they don’t have much time for Illinois, even though if it were a nation, the Illinois economy would be one of the top 20 in the world.

I have an idea of how to tap into an incredible underutilized resource.

We all need an Alice in our life

The doorbell rang unexpectedly tonight. I wasn’t anticipating anyone.

I went to answer it and got quite a wonderful gift.

Outside my front door stood a lovely, petite woman with bright blue eyes. She wore designer glasses, hoop earrings and turquoise Nikes. Her hair was a medium blond with just hints of gray here and there. She was a stranger; but not for long.

Within moments, she’d introduced herself as Alice, the friend I’ve corresponded with via mail sent the old-fashioned way. Alice reads my column in a newspaper in Ohio and she’s taken the time to write me and send cards on numerous occasions. I return the favor.

We’ve become pen pal friends.

Until tonight. Tonight we became real friends because she showed up on my doorstep to say, “Hi,” and I quickly realized her mind and outlook are as bright as her eyes.

Did I mention Alice is 98? We’d never met. She didn’t know where I lived. She just had the return address from a card I’d sent. She happened to be on vacation in Florida and decided to go out of her way to find me. (And Florida is not a small state.)

daughter served as chauffeur for this visit. But it was Alice, alone, who navigated the two steps to reach my front door. It was Alice, alone, who rang the doorbell and greeted me when I answered. She may be small in stature, but her presence is anything but.

We sat on my front porch with her daughter and chatted. They couldn’t stay long because they were on their way to a different destination. I was a pit stop, and glad to be one.

I am in awe and wonder that Alice decided she wanted to meet me in person and then made it happen. She is 98 and teaching me things every time we cross paths.

She is brave and alive in ways that many people many years younger could only hope to be. It brings tears to my eyes.

Today she wondered aloud why she is still here on earth. I tried to tell her, “Alice, you are teaching us all so many things.” I hope she heard.

Today Alice taught me there are items on my bucket list that I haven’t even thought of. Meeting her was definitely one of them.

I wish she could have stayed longer. I wish I could have asked her questions and listened to her answers for hours. Her visit was one of those moments in life that we don’t always realize are magic until they are all but over.

This one I realized.

Stop by anytime you are in the neighborhood, Alice. (And your daughter, Pat, too.) My door is always open. Next time I’ll put on a pot of coffee or a kettle for tea and maybe you can stay just a little bit longer. I’d like that.

No, I’d love that.

Sometimes angels arrive in our lives with their wings spread wide.

Other times they step up onto our front porch wearing turquoise Nikes.

I met my friend, Alice, today.

She is 98 years young and I’m so glad to know her.

did not identify any other ARPA funds that they would like to see reallocated to be put toward the trust fund.

“If it was up to me, I would have taken $5.5 billion a year ago—$4.5 billion to completely wipe out this debt that we have to the federal government … and $1 billion to get back to our $1 billion solvency target, which is part of the law today,” Sen. Win Stoller, R-East Peoria, said at the GOP news conference.

GOP Senators said a $16 billion revenue windfall in recent years—including $8.1 billion from ARPA, $3.4 billion from a previous federal stimulus and $4.6 billion in state revenue growth beyond what was projected for the current year—should have first been used to pay down the deficit before other allocations.

Democrats called their action a fiscally prudent measure that goes a long way to addressing the trust fund problem while allowing other necessary expenditures of ARPA funds.

“You know as well as I do that we’ve used the ARPA funding during this emergency to support those institutions and those businesses who have been on the frontlines and delivering health care in our communities,” Harris said in response to Republican criticisms March 23.

He pointed to spending for hospitals, nursing homes and purchases of personal protective equipment, as well as trust fund payments to gig workers and increased unemployment payments to workers which were paid by the federal government.

“And actually, I’m proud that we spent that money to be sure that these Illinoisans were protected, and the fact that you want to take it away from them, you think we should have shorted them—shame on you,” he said.

Pritzker pointed to other expenditures of federal funds such as to aid child care providers, small businesses, homeowners and renters.

Interest accruing As of March 23, the state had already accrued $41 million of interest on the debt and it continued to accrue at a rate of 1.59 percent.

That interest was due to be paid by Sept. 30, according to the U.S. Treasury.

By November, without action, that interest was expected to grow to $80 million, Hoffman said. Interest can’t be paid through ARPA, so it

would require a General Revenue Fund allotment, he added. Taking action by November would diminish that amount, he said.

GOP lawmakers argued that Democrats could have staved off some of that interest accrual by acting earlier. When lawmakers passed a budget last year, Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, and other Republicans called out the majority party for not acting on the trust fund deficit.

“When I brought this up a year ago, and I said you are failing to take action, you are going to make this worse, and you’re going to hurt people,” he said Thursday. “And here we are a year later. That’s exactly what’s happened.”

Because Democrats put off action on the trust fund for over a year, the GOP said, interest not only accrued on the outstanding debt, but interest rates for the bonding the state is considering to pay down the remaining $1.8 billion will have increased as well.

In July, Pritzker incorrectly told Capitol News Illinois that ARPA funds could not be used to pay down trust fund deficits although several states had already done so.

Other debt repayment The measure also allocated $898 million in general revenue funds to pay off old group health insurance bills, an added $300 million to pension payments beyond statutory levels and $230 million to pay off the unfunded liabilities of the College Illinois savings program—all cornerstones of Pritzker’s debt retirement initiatives put forth in his budget proposal. Those allotments will come from the state’s General Revenue Funds from the anticipated Fiscal Year 2022 surplus.

The pension spending would create $1 billion in savings to the state’s pension system over its life, while the group health insurance payments would save over $100 million in interest and the College Illinois payment would create a $75 million savings, according to estimates from House Democrats.

“By following through on our commitments to dedicate one-time revenues to one-time costs or liabilities, we are delivering Illinoisans, a stronger budget and a stronger state for years to come,” Pritzker said.

How much is too much caffeine?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says adults can safely consume 400 milligrams of caffeine each day — about the amount in 4 or 5 cups of coffee.

Caffeine affects people differently. For some, it takes several cups to perk up. For others, one cup of coffee and they’re jolted into action for hours.

Regardless of personal sensitivity, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends limiting caffeine intake in children and avoiding it altogether for kids age 5 and younger.

Kids can have trouble sleeping, anxiety, and higher blood pressure and heart rate when they consume too much caffeine.

Bill would provide $500 tax credit to volunteer firefighters and EMS workers Senate Bill 3027 is estimated to cost about $22 million to fully implement

Members of the Illinois Firefighters Association joined state legislators at a news conference March 23 to outline a measure that they claim would recruit more long-term volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel by offering them a tax credit.

Senate Bill 3027 would provide a $500 tax credit to those who serve as volunteer firefighters or EMS personnel. To qualify for the tax credit, volunteers must work for a fire department or fire protection district for at least nine months and not receive more than $10,000 in compensation for those services during the taxable year.

Glowiak Hilton highlights new behavioral health education opportunities at COD

With support from State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs), the College of DuPage was awarded funding for the Certified Recovery Support Specialist Success program to create behavioral and mental health education opportunities for students.

“The behavioral and mental health industries depends on skilled, reliable workers,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“By creating education opportunities for mental health professionals at the College of DuPage and throughout the state, Illinois is working to provide better quality care for individuals in recovery, give students handson experience and strengthen the workforce.”

The Illinois Department of Human Services awarded $4 million in grants to 11 colleges and universities throughout the state to support the CRSS Success program. Through the program, students can experience working in mental health capacities, substance treatment services, mobile crisis teams and more.

Additionally, the program incentivizes post-secondary education for up to 600 students with experiences in mental health or substance use recovery. Students can receive funding for assistance with tuition, textbook costs, childcare, application fees and transportation.

“Affordability is a critical element for students exploring higher education programs,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“By investing in students at Illinois universities, our state is working to support the young professionals most likely to contribute to our behavioral health workforce.”

“These individuals give up their personal time that could be spent with their families to ensure the well-being of our state’s residents with no monetary incentive,” Belt said.

The bill states that if the tax credit exceeds the tax liability for the year, the excess can be applied to the earliest tax year in which there is a tax liability.

The credit will not reduce a taxpayer’s liability to less than zero.

During a news conference March 18, Belt noted that if the bill is ap-

proved, it would cost about $20 million to $22 million in lost revenue to implement it. Belt said the cost upfront pales in comparison to the lives lost without volunteer firefighters and EMS workers.

Margaret Vaughn, government affairs director at the Illinois Firefighters Association, said the number of emergency calls to fire departments has tripled over the past 20 years, with most calls being for EMS, while the number of volunteer emergency workers continues to decrease.

Vaughn told the story of a fire at a 100-unit apartment dwelling in Silvis, a blaze that, according to National Fire Protection Association standards, should have had 30 firefighters facing it. But only five firefighters

showed up.

“That is a public safety crisis,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn said the aging population, additional training requirements and new policies have been contributing factors in the plummeting number of emergency workers. Training requirements vary by the fire department and district, she said.

National Fire Protection Association standard 1710 sets the minimum requirements for the number of firefighters needed when deploying fire suppression operations, EMS operations and other operations. NFPA standard 1720 establishes the minimum number of volunteers needed to assist professional firefighters.

Rep. Tom Bennett, R-Gibson City,

said passing the measure would help address staffing issues in rural areas that cannot afford full-time firefighters. He noted that the incentive can attract new volunteers to keep communities safe while showing appreciation for their service.

“They don’t do it for the money (or) do it for the glory,” Bennett said.

“They do it because they are committed to their communities, their neighbors and their families and they want to help.”

The measure passed the Senate unanimously but awaits further consideration in the House. The House Revenue and Finance Committee was expected to discuss uncertainty as to how the tax credit would be implemented on March 24.

Villa Park is apparently getting a grant worth $10 million from the state’s Illinois Department of Natural Resources toward a new recreation facility. Can’t the state find more important—or should I say more urgent—ways to give away money? I get that a new recreation center would be a nice amenity for the community, but I bet there are more pressing needs Villa Park could address first. Example: Let’s say I really needed a new roof but got a great deal on a (fill in the blank), and spent the money on that instead. I think the taxpayers need to speak up, since the village is also spending some of its own money for this. *** It is sad to read so many opinions of uninformed people who never understood how the U.S was weakened by foreign-made goods, easy access to firearms and an inadequate healthcare system. Case in point: How many of you have done anything to stretch a gallon of gas by making sure your tires are properly inflated, replaced dirty air filters or driven less aggressively? Also, Trump’s first impeachment was over him trying to withhold arms from Ukraine. Should we surrender to Russia for cheaper gas? I would consider that un-American. *** I was reading about a Quinnipiac University poll that asked if the U.S. was attacked similar to how Ukraine was attacked, who would stay and fight and who would leave? The poll showed 68 percent of Republicans and 57 percent of Independents would stay and fight, while 52 percent of Democrats would choose to leave. In the same poll, 40 percent of Democrats say they would stay and take up arms, while 25 percent of Republicans and 36 percent of Independents would leave. The results of this poll don’t surprise me at all. For years, I’ve heard more than a few Democratic politicians, many progressive leftists and many college and university students and professors continually trash this country. If it’s not “this country is systemically racist,” it’s something else. If that’s what they believe, then I guess I can see their point. Why fight for a country you already despise? *** I’m sure anyone who opposes Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to serve on the Supreme Court will be accused of racism. Here’s a reminder—more than 30 years ago, then-Senator Joe Biden voted against Clarence Thomas’ nomination to the Supreme Court. Did anyone accuse

Biden of racism? *** Throughout this terrible Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have asked myself more than once: What is the United Nations doing? The U.N. General Assembly took a vote with 141 of the 193 nations condemning the invasion, but that was basically a symbolic vote. If the U.N. is trying to broker a peace deal, or organizing food, medical and humanitarian aid, I haven’t seen or read anything in the media about it. This once again proves to me how useless and incompetent the U.N. has become. *** I heard that leaders of a student-run recreational ballet club at Princeton University recently denounced ballet as, quote, “an imperialist, colonialist and white supremacist art form” and spelled out goals to “decolonize” their group. Ronald Reagan once said that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. With woke regressive leftists such as these students coming up through the ranks, it looks like that generation has arrived. *** Someone left an answer to my post, so here is my answer to them.

Please look at the facts. *** If you believe Biden’s claim that rampant inflation and high gas prices are Putin’s fault, you haven’t been paying attention. Inflation and gas prices were already high before Russia invaded Ukraine. The only thing Biden has been good at is making excuses. Every problem is Putin’s fault, Trump’s fault, COVID’s fault, oil companies’ fault, etc. Biden couldn’t run a lemonade stand. *** It seems like the COVID-19 pandemic is pretty much over in our area. I’m thinking about all of students whose lives were affected over the last two years. Schools closed to in-person learning, forced masking, quarantines, saliva tests, desks rearranged for six feet of separation, arrows on the floor, constant

reports of so-called case counts, etc.

So many sporting events, concerts, plays, dances, graduations and other events were canceled. Was any of that worth it? Was even one student in DuPage County hospitalized because of COVID-19? We know there have been zero deaths related to COVID-19 in DuPage County residents under the age of 20. Will anyone apologize? Will anyone admit the obvious—that COVID-19 didn’t severely impact healthy children? I doubt it. *** Remember when the economy was booming, unemployment was at an all-time low, gas and products were cheap, other countries weren’t walking all over us, fair economic trade, no threats of war, border control, lowest violent rates, America prospering and we weren’t destroying our kids’ futures? Oh yeah, mean tweets and a dislike for his personality made you vote against him. Dumb! Reagan once said “The downfall of society

will be the uneducated voter.” Point proven. *** Our country is filled with people doing terrible things. Murder, assault, carjacking and more. People are stealing catalytic converters every day, and how about the lowlifes stealing mail and doctoring checks?

There are so many dishonest people out there. But of course, there’s no dishonesty or fraud in our elections.

There’s a sub-variant of Omicron that is leading to a new wave of COVID-19 infections across Europe. It’s called BA.2.

They could call it R2-D2 for all I care. There will always be a new COVID sub-variant. I can almost predict what’s going to happen. If this new sub-variant becomes more widespread here, it will give Dr. Fraud-ci, Allison Arwady, Rochelle Walensky and all the other unelected bureaucrats a new sense of purpose so they can spread fear and push for more vaccines, more mask-wearing and more restrictions.

Warriors place ninth at the Windy City Classic

Willowbrook’s girls soccer team won a pair of matches last week to earn a ninth-place finish in the 32-team Windy City Classic.

The Warriors won four of five matches during the season-opening tournament.

Willowbrook played four of its five tournament contests on its home field in Villa Park. The Warriors began the event with an 8-0 win over Oak Lawn on March 15. Willowbrook then lost a 2-1 decision to Glenbrook South on March 17. The Warriors rebounded from that loss to beat Plainfield South 2-0 on March 19.

Playing its fourth straight home match to start the 2022 season, Willowbrook earned a 2-1 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor on March 22. Seniors Rachael Klamecki (top left - No. 23) and Izzy Manning (bottom left - No. 24) scored one goal each for the Warriors. Senior Erin Fitzgibbon assisted Klamecki’s goal. Willowbrook traveled to Reavis High School—the host of the Windy City Classic—for last week’s ninth-place match against De La Salle Institute.

The Warriors defeated the Meteors 1-0 on March 24.

Willowbrook junior Kennedy Vannoy scored the match’s only goal with an assist from Klamecki. The Warriors will return to action on April 5, when they will open their West Suburban Gold Conference season with a match at Addison Trail.
