School districts provide food service

District 88 is teaming up with other area school districts, including District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48, to provide meals to students while schools are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, about 140 volunteers prepared and distributed thousands of meals to students. From 10 a.m. until noon, each day from March 17-20, breakfast and lunches were provided free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18. The meals were distributed outside of several schools, including Willowbrook High School and District 45’s Jefferson Middle School. Cottage Hill Operating Company helped to deliver the food to the schools. The program is continuing this week, each day from March 23-27. Villa Park responds to the COVID-19 crisis

Schools closed through April 7; public buildings and parks closed until further notice

Students in Villa Park and the rest of Illinois completed their first full week without regular classes last week. Gov. JB Pritzker announced on March 12 that all K-12 schools in the state, public and private, would be closed from March 17 through March 29, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, March 20, Pritzker announced a “stay-at-home” order, which ordered all Illinois residents to stay at home or at their place of residence, except as allowed for essential activities. That order took effect at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, lasting until at least April 7.

Pritzker also announced on Friday the extension of the statewide school closures through at least April 7, with an anticipated return on Wednesday, April 8.

Beginning March 17, Willowbrook High School students and staff transitioned to an online E-learning environment, with teachers providing activities and assignments.

Students use Google Classroom to verify their attendance and access the curriculum.

There were three E-learning days—March 17, March 18 and March 19—for Willowbrook students last week. The E-learning provided by the Villa Park school continued this week on March 24, March 25 and March 26.

District 88 Superintendent Scott Helton notified district families last week that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) had declared the days of school closure between

March 17-30 as Act of God Days, which means they won’t need to be made up at the end of the school year. District 88 includes Willowbrook High School, as well as Addison Trail High School.

Helton noted that the ISBE strongly encourages school districts to provide instruction to students during the Act of God Days through whatever means possible.

“Our goal at District 88 is to stay connected to provide continuity of education that meets the needs of all of our students and families,” stated Helton in a message to district families last week. “Our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement, and we will move forward with our E-learning plan to help ensure we accomplish that mission.”

According to a recent letter from State Superintendent of Education Carmen Ayala to Illinois school superintendents, the ISBE recommends that any student work completed during a COVID-19 related Act of God Day not count toward student grades or otherwise impact a student’s academic standing.

District 88, District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48 all have their spring break next week—the week of March 30 through April 3.

Park public offices were closed to the public. The buildings that are closed include Villa Park Village Hall, the village’s police and fire department buildings, its public works building, and its community recreation and economic development buildings.

“We ask for your patience as we navigate the local challenges Villa Park residents and businesses will face as a result of the spread of COVID-19,” said Bulthuis in a statement last week.

While public buildings will be closed to the public, essential services will continue. Village staff will remain normal office hours.

Residents are encouraged to pay their village bills online, or to drop their payments off in the drop box in the village hall’s parking lot, at the Lighthouse gas station at 1 W. St. Charles Road, or at Inland Bank, 305 W. St. Charles Road.

The Villa Park Police Department alerted residents to its updated protocol in response to the pandemic. Expect firefighters to be wearing masks Members of the Villa Park Fire Department informed residents on Sunday to not be surprised if they call for a non-medical reason, and the firefighter/paramedics who respond are wearing masks.

“We are all firefighters AND paramedics, and need to stay healthy,” stated a message from Villa Park International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Local 2392.

New early childhood center, all-day kindergarten should be in place for the 2022-23 school year STAFF REPORT

Voters in School District 45 approved the referendum question on the ballot in last week’s March 17 election. The referendum asked voters if they wanted to approve a proposal to borrow $30 million to pay for several improvements, including the construction of a new early childhood center.

According to the unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Commission, 4,132 voters (about 61.36 percent of those who cast ballots) voted in favor of the referendum, while 2,602 (about 38.64 percent) voted against it.

Judith Degnan, president of the District 45 Board of Education, issued a statement after the election.

“On behalf of the D45 Board of Education, I want to thank the community for your support of the referendum,” stated Degnan. “Your overwhelming response on March 17 was very much appreciated. I am so proud to be a part of a community who believes in our district’s vision of preparing students to successfully navigate a dynamic world.”

Degnan added that the school board has already begun to work with architects to create detailed plans and drawings for the improvements outlined in the referendum proposal.

She said construction would likely begin in 2021, with a targeted completion date of 2022.

“This is such a great accomplishment for our district, our families, and our community,” continued Degnan. “Thank you for believing in District 45 and for supporting the needs of our students.”

District 45, which includes portions of Villa Park, Lombard, Oakbrook Terrace and Elmhurst, includes eight schools and approximately 3,500 students. The district has two middle schools—Jackson and Jefferson—both of which are located in Villa Park. There are six elementary schools in the district. Ardmore and North schools are in Villa Park.

Are you tired of winning yet? *** In times of crisis it’s funny how people, who are in fear, allow the government to make up rules and trample on our constitutional rights. The Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment requires just compensation when the state meaningfully interferes with an owner’s chosen lawful use of his property. That really drives a lot of fear, in my opinion. One final point: thanks to a society where someone can sue somebody else for just about anything, it’s no wonder everything is being shut down. But I can’t help but wonder what the economic impact is going to be as this continues. The number of people filing for unemployment is sharply rising, and you can’t expect businesses like restaurants to survive for very long if they’re not getting customers.

I’m sure many people who have lost their jobs can get unemployment, but they still have bills and mortgages to pay and kids to support if they have children. When the public is desperate for information, government needs to maximize authoritative information from scientists and experts on the public payroll. That appropriately gives Americans what they need to know, and counters irresponsible pundits who have sought to minimize the threat to score political or ratings points.

Most encouraging, though, has been the response of state and local governments, schools and the private sector. Governments at every level resist disclosure and scrutiny, but this has been a refreshing change, with leaders saying: “Here’s what we need to do, here’s why we’re doing it and here’s how you can find out more.”

Sports leagues and private businesses, not known for transparency, have been refreshingly transparent. How many emails have you received

this week that began “Out of an abundance of caution …”?

There are a lot of institutions making tough decisions these days, but they’re largely doing it in partnership with the American people.

More than anything, else, though, this crisis reminds us of how wise the first generation of Americans was in demanding a free press. Despite the inevitable accusations by some that the news media were “hyping” this threat, traditional media have been measured and thorough in their coverage, making the most of their on-air medical and scientific consultants. Closer to home, local newspapers and broadcasters have devoted extensive resources to reporting how the virus will affect the communities they serve.

President Trump told the nation recently that “we are all in this together” and that’s exactly what needs to happen: the government sharing what it knows truthfully and without spin or bravado, private and public institutions engaging constructively with America’s most pressing challenge and news organizations keeping the public informed in a thorough and even-handed way.

In the end, science will prevail in curbing this virus. Yet the path to that victory can only emerge from true collaboration and collective sacrifice, fueled by a shared understanding of exactly what we’re up against. That can only come from the free flow of information.

It may sound counterintuitive to go out to a blood drive, but we are encouraging healthy donors to give blood. Red Cross has put new safety measures in place to protect staff and donors, including checking the temperature of staff and donors before they enter a drive location, providing hand sanitizer throughout the donation process and spacing beds in accordance with social distancing guidelines. Canceled blood drives could devastate blood supply, impair patient care Donations urgently needed

In the wake of COVID-19 responses, Vitalant is urging groups to continue organizing blood drives and individuals to continue donating blood, unless local public health officials specifically direct otherwise.

es, community groups and religious institutions—which represent more than 60 percent of the nation’s blood supply—are events critical to health care in our country, and if canceled, could jeopardize patient care.

“We strongly urge organizations to follow the guidance of state and local public health organizations when responding to COVID-19,” said Dr. Ralph Vassallo, Vitalant’s chief medical and scientific officer. “And we strongly urge these public health

organizations to use data-based approaches to manage the public’s response. Otherwise, we will be in jeopardy of causing another public health crisis—not having enough blood to meet basic patient needs.”

Vitalant—the second largest blood provider in the country—is working with other blood banks to avoid a critical failure of the blood supply.

These treatments include filtration and disinfectants at Chicago’s Jardine Water Purification Plant, and disinfecting performed at the commission’s pumping station in Elmhurst.

“I am concerned about the number of residents purchasing bottled water because of fears related to the current pandemic, and want to reassure them that tap water is safe to drink,” said DuPage Water Commission Chairman Jim Zay in the statement, which added that the commission works in partnership

with public health agencies and other water agencies and organizations to share the latest information and best practices.

The commission’s release added that, according to the EPA, the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies.

The EPA stated that the risk to water supplies is low.

The commission also provided a statement from the American Water Works Association (AWWA), stating that COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment.

“In these difficult times, giving blood is something healthy individuals can do to help the sick. Sports Athletes, coaches wait to play ball Pandemic brings much of life, including high school sports, to a standstill STAFF REPORT

Like every other high school softball coach in the area, Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos is used to unpredictable schedules.

When your softball season begins in Chicagoland in March, you expect some games and practices to be postponed by rain, snow and freezing temperatures.

You don’t expect a pandemic that closes school buildings and, in addition to wiping out several games, prevents teams from gathering for any type of indoor or outdoor practice.

The pandemic has shut down a significant amount of routine life, which, for many people, includes high school athletics.

“Our first game is supposed to be on March 23, and as soon as the 27th hit we were going to start playing pretty often over spring break [the week of March 30 to April 3],” said Karos last week.

All K-12 schools in Illinois are closed until at least April 8. Even if regular classes and athletic events start up on that day, a sizable portion of high school teams’ spring seasons will be lost.

“I’m trying to pretend the weather just isn’t allowing us to play this early, like in years past, but it’s definitely weighing on me, thinking about the time I’m losing with the team, not just from the softball side of things,” Karos said. “They are a great group of girls who deserve to have a memorable season.”

Karos and the Warriors held their first official practice of the 2020 season on March 4. Eight days later, the team held what turned out to be its final practice of the month.

“Our last practice was March 12, but it feels like so long ago,” said Karos, who has had almost daily contact with her team. Her connections with the Warriors include providing links to old NCAA games on YouTube, along with posting theme days on Instagram.

“Anything to keep them as close as I can during such a crazy, unpredictable time,” she said. “I know they aren’t just sitting around at home. Many of them are focusing on E-learning, as well as doing any skill training or workout that can be accomplished in their living room or in their own back yard.”

All-conference Warriors Seniors Everett Stubblefield (No. 3-left) and Sam Tumilty (No. 5-right) of the Willowbrook boys basketball team were both named to the West Suburban Gold Conference’s 2019-20 All-Conference team. Both Warriors played in all 33 of their team’s games during the season, which ended earlier this month. Stubblefield averaged a team-leading 21.2 points per game. He made 89 of 273 shots (nearly 33 percent) of his attempts from 3-point range and connected on 94 of 129 (almost 73 percent) of his free-throw attempts. Stubblefield, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer near the end of the season, also contributed 153 rebounds, 101 steals and 73 assists. Tumilty posted Willowbrook’s second-best scoring output, averaging 12.5 points per game. He made 45 of 162 (about 28 percent) of his 3-point attempts.

Tumilty provided 142 rebounds, 82 steals and a team-leading 116 assists during the season. The Warriors finished the 2019-20 campaign with an overall record of 1320. Willowbrook went 4-8 in conference play to place fifth in the West Suburban Gold standings.

Relay for Life fundraiser brings in almost $90,000

Earlier this month, about 500 students from Willowbrook High School and Addison Trail High School took part in the 10th annual Relay for Life of District 88 Youth fundraiser. The students from the two District 88 schools spent the night in Willowbrook’s field house during the fundraiser, which raised money for the American Cancer Society. Before the event, students formed fundraising teams. A team of Willowbrook sophomores—It’s Po22ible—raised the third-most money of all the teams. The students from the Class of 2022 raised over $15,500.
