County, DuPage Foundation launch new partnership Chairman Dan Cronin and County Board members Don Puchalski, Ashley Selmon, and Sam Tornatore presented a $10.6 million check to the DuPage Foundation at its Feb. 22 meeting. These funds will support a new strategic grantmaking partnership known as the DuPage Community Transformation Partnership.

DuPage County approved an agreement in January to provide $10.6 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding for the Foundation to implement a grant program to support social service not-for-profit organizations helping DuPage County residents most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will focus on providing assistance for food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and substance abuse.

Guidelines will be developed over the next few months and an announcement regarding the application process will be made in spring 2022.

County launches online permitting system DuPage County residents no longer need to file permit applications in-person. On Jan. 31, DuPage County launched its new online permitting system, allowing residents to apply for permits from home.

The new system will allow for electronic submissions of several types of permits, including building permits, highway permits, utility permits, zoning entitlements, and more. It will also allow residents to track the progress of their permit application online as DuPage County moves to a paperless permitting program.

Village board approves measures to continue the process to build a new recreation center

Villa Park Village Board members voted unanimously during their March 14 meeting to approve resolutions related to the construction of a new recreation center at Lions Park.

In September 2021, the village received notice that it had been awarded a $10 million grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to be used to build a recreation facility. At their Jan. 10, 2022 meeting, board members authorized the sale of up to $7.5 million in general obligation bonds to fund the additional amount needed to build the new facility.

The recreation center, which is scheduled to open in 2024, has a total estimated cost of about $17.8 million.

That cost includes the estimated expense of $575,000 to build a playground and outdoor basketball court outside of the center, and to make improvements to the ball field on the north side of Lions Park.

Police warn of thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles

Wildwood Ave. At last week’s meeting, board members voted 7-0 to approve a resolution that authorized the submission of a grant application to the IDNR and approved a site and scope plan to build the center. The site and scope plan needs to be included in the grant application to the IDNR. That application is due on March 31.

The board approved a separate ordinance during last week’s meeting to finalize the issuance of up to $7.5 million in bonds to help pay for building and equipping the recreation center.

The bond deal calls for the village to borrow nearly $7.5 million at a final true interest cost of about 2.9 percent.

The board also approved a resolution at last week’s meeting to approve a professional service agreement for architectural and engineering services with Williams Architects of Itasca, in an amount not to exceed about $1.38 million.

Williams Architects has worked for the Village of Villa Park on various projects since 1996. The firm worked with village staff to conduct recent meetings to gain community input about the new recreation center.

The first of those meetings was held on Dec. 29, 2021. The next two meetings took place on Jan. 15 and Jan. 19, 2022.

Feb. 14, Williams Architects gave a presentation summarizing the information provided at the three community input meetings. The firm provided a few options for how to proceed, and board members decided unanimously to move forward with the option calling for the construction of a new recreation center at Lions Park, along with the surrounding amenities of a new playground and outdoor basketball court, while keeping the existing ball field on the north side of the park.

Andrew Caputo of Williams Architects gave a presentation during the March 14 board meeting about the preliminary design concept for the recreation center to be built at Lions Park. He noted that the center will feature a small parking lot on the south side of the building. A linear parking lot will be located on the east side of the center.

The new outdoor playground and basketball court will be located just north of the new center. The two-story center will feature approximately 41,000 square feet of space.

Caputo’s presentation noted that the first floor of the center will include multi-purpose rooms and a kitchen.

The kitchen could be used for training and classes. It could also be utilized for catering and serving food at the center. The facility will also include an outdoor patio.

The gymnasium will be located on the east side of the first floor of the center. The gym will include a northsouth basketball court, as well as dividing curtains to partition the space into as many as three east/west courts.

In addition to basketball, the gym will accommodate volleyball, pickleball and badminton. The gym will include telescoping bleachers, as well as some movable bleachers.

The center’s second-floor footprint is smaller than the first floor. The second floor will feature a two-lane track. People using the track will be able to look down on the gymnasium.

The second floor will also include a fitness center containing weights and exercise equipment.

Interim Village Manager Michael Guerra stated during last week’s board meeting that the village hopes to be ready for a soft opening of the new recreation center in March 2024, and that the facility will be fully open later that same year.

Greg Gola, the director of the Villa Park Parks and Recreation Department, said during the Jan. 19 community input meeting that the village’s Iowa Community Center would eventually be razed if a new recreation center is built at Lions Park. He said the open space created by the razed Iowa Community Center building would be utilized as additional field space.

The Villa Park Police Department is warning residents that thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles are on the rise.

A catalytic converter is a component of a vehicle’s exhaust system.

Thieves target these converters because they contain expensive metals.

According to the police department, a thief using a jack and a portable reciprocating saw can get under a car and cut off a catalytic converter in less than one minute.

“If you see someone laying by a car, or acting suspicious, call 9-1-1, but do not engage them yourselves,” said Villa Park Police Chief Michael Rivas. “Many of these culprits are armed.”

Recently, thieves have been targeting school parking lots in DuPage County, including the parking lot at Willowbrook High School. Thieves reportedly removed catalytic converters from vehicles in the Willowbrook parking lot on Wednesday, March 16.

On that same day, thieves of catalytic converters targeted the parking lot at the Villa Park Walmart at 900 S. Route 83.

Thieves of catalytic converters once again targeted the parking lot at Willowbrook High School on Thursday, March 17. Police responded to the school, which was briefly placed on a soft lockdown from about 12:10 to 12:20 p.m. The suspects fled from the area and were not apprehended.

Saturday marked the first time the craft fair has been held since 2019.

It was cancelled the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, the craft fair had been held annually at St. Alexander Catholic Church each fall for 40 years.

Warriors’ offense shines in first week of the season Willowbrook scores 19 total runs in impressive wins over Bartlett and Glenbard East

The Willowbrook baseball team opened its 2022 season with a pair of victories last week. The Warriors began their season with an 11-5 win over Bartlett at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream on March 14. Willowbrook moved to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Glenbard East in Villa Park on March 16.

Senior Max Vaisvila and junior Isaac Sobieszczyk both homered in the Warriors’ win over Bartlett. Sobieszczyk connected for a two-run homer in the first inning. Vaisvila drilled a two-run homer in the third inning. Vaisvila’s blast gave the Warriors an 11-0 lead.

Sobieszczyk went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs. He scored three runs. Vaisvila went 1-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Junior Joey Tumilty, who was Willowbrook’s leadoff hitter, went 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Sophomore Aiden Baerenklau went 2-for-2 and scored one run.

Senior Jacob Skinner pitched the first three innings for the Warriors.

Skinner didn’t allow any runs. He recorded five strikeouts while giving up one hit and one walk.

Willowbrook scored one run in the first inning of its game against Glenbard East. The Warriors scored three runs in both the third and the fourth innings, and added one more run in the sixth inning.

The Willowbrook girls soccer team began its 2022 season by playing three home matches last week. The Warriors won two of the three matches. All three contests were part of Reavis High School’s 32-team Windy City Classic.

The Warriors opened their season with an 8-0 win over Oak Lawn on March 15. Two days later, Willowbrook suffered a 2-1 loss to Glenbrook South. The Warriors bounced back from that loss by beating Plainfield South 2-0 on Saturday.

Junior Kennedy Vannoy scored three goals in the first half of the Warriors’ match against Oak Lawn to help Willowbrook to a 5-0 halftime lead.

Seniors Rachael Klamecki and Brooke Vandergrift each scored one first-half goal. Vandergrift scored another goal early in the second half. Senior Mackenzie Parente netted a goal to increase the lead to 7-0. Sophomore Natalia Garcia-Avila scored the Warriors’ final goal of the match.

Vannoy scored a goal early in the March 17 match against Glenbrook South to help the Warriors to a 1-0 halftime lead. Glenbrook South pulled out the victory with a pair of second-half goals.

Vandergrift scored the Warriors’ first goal in Saturday morning’s contest. Willowbrook’s next goal came on an own-goal by Plainfield South.

The Warriors will play at least one more match in the Windy City Classic this week.

The world of Wordle

There’s a new game sweeping the Internet. It’s called Wordle and the premise is pretty simple. You get six chances to correctly guess, ascertain and or sleuth out a random, fiveletter word. With each guess you are told which letters are in the word, which are not and which are in the right space within the word.

If you correctly guess the word in four guesses or less you earn bragging rights on various social media platforms. Any game that sets up bragging rights on social media is destined for stardom. In that regard, Wordle is already a celebrity.

There are a couple of magical things about Wordle. First, it spans generations. My son introduced me to the game; and I know friends who compete in family challenges with their 90-something grandmothers as well as their 10-year-old fifth graders. There aren’t too many activities that can appeal to boomers, the X, Y and Zers and those who’ve lived through realities like the Great Depression and WWII. Wordle does just that.

Second, you can only play one word each day. You can’t get consumed by it and spend hours on word after word after word. It’s a one and done. You do the Wordle and wait until tomorrow for a new word to become Wordle-able.

Well, unless you are an addicted fanatic, and find the Wordle archive online. Then you’ll have access to all 200-plus Wordle words. It could keep you busy for days—not that I’d know from personal experience.

Wordle may be based on a simple premise, but the way one approaches the game varies from person to person. This reveals a good deal about us as individuals.

There’s been much speculation about how to select the first word for your daily guess. There are two distinct groups of Wordlers in this regard. The first are the foot loose and fancy free. They choose a word based on a feeling or a sign or maybe a dream they had the night before. Every day it’s a different word, because playing any other way would be boring.

Then there is the other group, to which I belong. I call us the rigid Wordlers because we have standard words to start our journey each day. Within my first two words, the goal is to use all five vowels along with a handful of the most popular

consonants. Lately, my first word is “autos.” For the longest time, my second word was “brine,” but a couple of weeks ago I changed that to “diner” because I thought having the “er” at the end might be advantageous.

Within a week of that change, the Wordle for the day was (wait for it…) brine. Exclamation point. So much for the “er” on the end being advantageous. Suffice to say I didn’t do any bragging on social media that day.

Once I start a game, I finish it within minutes. One of my sons will take a guess or two and then ponder it for an hour or more while he goes about the rest of his day. There are as many techniques to Wordle as there are five-letter words in the English language – and that’s a lot.

Some days, the word is tougher than others. This happens (in my opinion) when one letter is used twice in the same word. For instance you know there is an S or a V or an I in your word, but you might not consider two of each of those letters. Consider “vivid,” “eases” and “shush.”

A year ago, Wordle wasn’t in my vocabulary, because it hadn’t been invented yet. Now, according to the New York Times, more than 300,000 people play it daily. I’m one of them. And other countries are jumping on the bandwagon. Canada has its own version called Canuckle.

In times that can seem scary and bleak, Wordle is a vivid bright light. It eases us toward peace, and when we solve, we shush so we don’t spoil the quest for others. It can bring about a sense of pride and unity with other Wordlers. From my perspective, there’s only one thing that could make it more perfect: If Wordle itself was a five-letter word.

But that would be asking a lot – or better put in Wordle terms – heaps, loads and scads.

Congress passes 2022 government spending package

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Congress recently passed the bipartisan government funding package for 2022, which President Biden subsequently signed, and I was proud to support.

Beyond preventing a government shutdown and maintaining vital government services, this legislation included emergency aid to Ukraine as well as crucial investments in our safety net programs. Additionally, the new law included many of my own initiatives to help American consumers and protect our national security while directing funding for important community projects in the 8th District.

Throughout my time as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I have been fighting big tobacco to end the youth vaping epidemic. E-cigarette companies have been marketing their products to our youth, and now companies have begun to evade FDA oversight of tobacco-derived nicotine through the use of synthetic nicotine.

However, in bringing together U.S. representatives and senators from both parties, I was able to successfully include a provision in the spending package that closed this loophole to ensure that the FDA can regulate synthetic nicotine. The spending package also included funding for which I advocated to expand the FDA’s program to reduce the dangerously high levels of toxic heavy metals in baby food, which is an issue that I uncovered in my Subcommittee investigation last year.

In addition to my initiatives to protect families, the appropriations package included my bills to protect U.S. national security through the tracking

of “gray zone activities”—actions such as disinformation campaigns or terrorist financing – and through the monitoring of the relationship between China and the United Arab Emirates.

The package also included provisions I spearheaded to expand clean energy generation through the solar industry and job training through career and technical education programs, areas for which I have been an active advocate in Congress.

Finally, the government spending package included funding for community projects across the country. I am proud that nine projects in our district that I nominated were approved for funding, bringing over $3.1 million in support for critical local initiatives.

Of that funding, HIRE360 Business Development Center is receiving funding to train workers for 21st century jobs, and the Village of Hoffman Estates Domestic Violence Project and the WINGS Program Inc. of Rolling Meadows will both receive funding to support victims of domestic violence.

The Wood Dale Public Library District and the Chicago/Villa Park YWCA are both receiving funding for early childhood learning programs while the Salt Creek School District 48 is receiving support for its afterschool program.

I’m also proud I was able to secure financial support for mental and behavioral health services through the Village of Schaumburg’s programs as well as the Access Community Health Network. The spending package also includes funding to improve the safety of National Parkway and Higgins Road (IL-72) by improving pedestrian signals. This year’s government funding package addresses a wide range of our community’s needs, and I’m glad I was able to secure these bipartisan provisions to directly help our district.

Update on the situation in Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin has continued his barbaric, unprovoked attack on the people of Ukraine.

Each day brings stories of brave Ukrainians throwing themselves in harm’s way to stop Putin’s tanks, disarming bombs, and more broadly defending their nation’s independence. As part of our 2022 government spending package, Congress authorized over $13 billion to support Ukraine by sending U.S. troops to Eastern European allied countries, providing weapons to allied forces, supporting refugees, and enforcing economic sanctions on Russia.

As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I participated in a hearing last week with top American intelligence officials on the threats our nation faces across the world.

During the hearing, we discussed the importance of President Putin’s domestic unpopularity, the impact of a Russian oil ban, the reaction of the People’s Republic of China to the consequences faced by Russia, and we determined that the city of Kyiv would face serious food and water shortages within two weeks if cut off by Russian forces.

That’s why we need to support a possible Ukrainian insurgency, a policy outlined by my bipartisan Supplying Ukraine with Provisions to Protect against Ongoing Russian Threats (SUPPORT) Act. The effort to preserve Ukraine’s independence is of enormous consequence for the freedom of the Ukrainian people but also for millions of people across the world threatened by autocratic regimes.

In fact, the U.S. was exporting oil at that time. The U.S. is producing 1.5 million barrels of oil less than we were two years ago. To lower inflation and especially the cost of fuel, we need to be energy independent again. Biden wants to get oil from Iran, Venezuela or Saudi Arabia?

That’s not smart. When oil is taken out of the ground and used for fuel, it has the same effect on the planet no matter where on earth it was drilled. Drilling oil in Russia, Saudi Arabia or the U.S. is all the same. The only real effect is the cost of the oil to the American consumer. Open up the Keystone pipeline, make our own fuel and lower the cost of everything. *** To the caller who said I can’t compare Lombard or Villa Park to Aurora for a “Love Local” kind of event, I do realize what’s going on and I know they are two different-size populations, so maybe you misunderstood.

The idea is to have a similar event, tailored to our-size villages, just more than once a year on Small Business Saturday—maybe a weekend sidewalk sale in the summer, with food samples from our restaurants. And yes, I think there are enough businesses to hold such an event for two days, like a Saturday and Sunday. It would certainly attract people to Lombard’s downtown, and Villa Park’s, too. *** To all of you who don’t want to place blame on President Biden for the rising gas prices, I saw them go up the very day after he was inaugurated. Coincidence? I think not, after immediately announcing his so-called energy/green plans. I was no fan of Trump, but I was better off financially (call me selfish if you want), and Putin didn’t want to mess with a president you call a “madman.” It seems Biden isn’t listening to those experts in the military who are

warning publicly that the sanctions are not going to have much of an effect, and that we may end up with boots on the ground, or missiles in the air, to help defend our NATO allies. I will take Trump’s mean tweets—which I can ignore—over Biden’s unwillingness or inability to listen to military and economic leaders, which could affect our very well-being as a nation.

That we cannot ignore. *** Is anyone paying attention to what this administration is doing? They do not care about the American people.

Russia is taking over Ukraine and Biden and his staff are negotiating a deal with Russia and Iran—supposedly to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon. My word, people, you elected an idiot. Look into it. As big of a jerk as Trump was, at least he loved America. *** A caller last week claimed Chicago was the 40th most violent city. There are 19,495 cities in the U.S. I’m glad they are happy being in the top 40.

Last year, there were 25,532 violent crimes in Chicago. I guess that’s not too many. There were 797 murders in Chicago last year; that isn’t too bad, either, according to the caller. Really? *** Hooray! Our mallards are back in our yard for the fifth year. They have found their regular food and nesting spot. Finally something normal and wonderful! We have had nine to 13 ducklings every year, even during COVID! *** I’ve been a resident at the same address for 12 years now, and I am still receiving a lot of mail for the previous owner. I’ve also had the same mail carrier for a few years now. One would think that by now with all the return mail I give them that the postal worker would know who lives and doesn’t live at my address. I also get mail for my neighbors on my block and the next. Are these workers incompetent or lazy (don’t want to separate it properly)? If I made the amount of errors at my job, I’d be given the pink slip by now! Come on USPS! You can do better! *** Catalytic converters are once again being stolen during the day at Walmart and Willowbrook High School. But when prices rise, it’s Russia’s fault, it’s COVID’s fault, it’s the oil companies’ fault. *** Many people seem very emotional about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

I would hope people would try to learn more about Russia, Ukraine, Crimea and the border issues in that region before making conclusions. Things are not as simple as they appear. That’s all. *** It’s time for everyone to realize we are in a revolution and civil war when it comes to politics. We need to unite, if America is going to survive as it was. The first step is to change our Senate and House seating from left to right. It needs to be arranged more like a checkerboard so our representatives are integrated, not segregated. That’s a start for unification. Too simple? Try it. *** From Wiktionary: “Trumped Up”: “Fraudulently devised or concocted; false, adjective. Faked, fabricated or falsely manufactured. Usually in the phrase trumped-up charges referring to legal accusation made for illegitimate reasons.” Now then, I know it doesn’t need to be said, but there are some people who need help, like the QAnuts, Kamala Harris, 93.45 percent of California and 80 percent of the entertainment business not in California.

So, quite obviously Trump is the king of trumping up stuff. From the election being stolen, to his popularity, to his achievements and the size of some people’s hands. I’m sure the phrase was around long before Trump came into the world. I guess it’s that true, that there are no coincidences. *** How much longer can we afford to play the game of “Hidin’ Biden?”

What’s the difference between a socialist dictator and a socialist president who is not held accountable for anything by his followers or the mainstream media? *** I’m sure you heard on the news that Willie Wilson gave $200,000 in free gas to 10 gas stations in Chicago. Wilson is a millionaire businessman who’s run unsuccessfully for mayor of Chicago in the past. I also read that Wilson is giving $1 million more in free gas to people this week. Some might say Willie Wilson is grandstanding. I don’t. I applaud him because he’s actually trying to help out the little guy.

I don’t see any Chicago celebrities, sports or otherwise, stepping up to help. I certainly don’t see the abysmal Chicago mayor or the Democratic Party stepping up—you know; the ones that always say they are for the little guy. Keep on doing what you’re doing, Willie!

Warriors win their opener

The Willowbrook softball team kicked off its 2022 season with a 16-0, four-inning victory over Wheeling in Villa Park on March 17. Senior Caitlyn Kulczyski (above - No. 19) fired a perfect game for the Warriors, striking out all 12 batters she faced. Offensively, Kulczyski went 3-for-4 and drove in one run. Willowbrook scored seven runs in the first inning. The Warriors added five more runs in the second inning. Playing in her first game with the Willowbrook program, freshman Hannah Kenny tripled in her first at-bat. In her next appearance at the plate, Kenny hit a home run over the center-field fence. Junior Kayleigh Dennison went 1-for-4 and scored two runs. Dennison is pictured below while rounding third base and heading home to score a run. Freshman Sonia Ruchala went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in her first game as a Warrior. Sophomore Lindsey Rugg went 2-for-3 and drove in one run. The Warriors’ upcoming schedule includes this Saturday’s home doubleheader against Plainfield Central.
